hey YouTube friends a quick video this week I want to talk to you about multicam editing in Final Cut Pro a really great tool and as of this week even more powerful than I ever thought it was so I'm going to tell you what it is how to do it and share with you the incredible power of this tool so let's do it so first off let's start with what is multicam editing essentially Final Cut has put together an incredibly powerful piece of software which means that if you're shooting multiple cameras and potentially audio sources as well then once you get that footage into Final Cut you can select all of those clips and it will automatically align them and give you this really powerful interface so that you can really easily choose your favorite angles choose the best audio or the external audio that you've recorded and put it all together and it's amazing how much it streamlines the editing process let's dive in to my screen and I'm just going to show you how to use the sort of basic functionality and then I'm going to share with you something that I figured out this week that it kind of makes it even more powerful for a sort of small-time filmmaker like myself a one-man band for example that makes it even better so let's jump into my screen what I've got here right is I've just put together a couple of bits this is Final Cut Pro we're looking at now and as I'm sure you know so first of all I want to talk to you about sort of the basic multicam editing okay so for example a few weeks ago I shot some Talking Heads style videos with a friend Ross here and so we had this camera this was sort of the camera - this was sort of a tight shot and then we have a wide shot here and he was talking about his business okay so this is kind of traditional I had a microphone hooked up to my camera a so this wide shot had good audio and and then just the built microphone on this one so I want to use the audio from this clip and I want to just have this as a nice second angle so first of all let's look at the basic multicam functionality so I want this clip so I've selected it there in the browser and then I can command click and select this clip and then if I right-click I can say new multicam clip it's gonna ask me what I want to call it I'm gonna call it Ross talking head I click enter it's gonna have a think about it for a moment and then it's going to add a new multicam clip to my event browser here so if I drag this into my timeline and let's just close this browser now for a second and then in my viewer I'm gonna go view showing viewer angles and what this is now done okay is we've got both of the clips and it's going to have synced them up so now for editing rise I can choose which one I want to use the sound from so for example I can change the sound here hold on don't do that so at the beginning I can choose this as like a master for my video and audio yeah there we go so that one you see here this has got this little video clip and it's also got this little sound wave so that means that is showing you the video and the sound so once you've got your sound sorted you want to change this up here so this is just then the video clip and then if I play the clip in the timeline as I decide that I want it to cut between the cameras all I have to do is click and you can see in the timeline that it's automatically put that cut in and then once I want another cup I can click back it's going to change the angle really helpful so immediately I've not got any thinking to do it's all done for me and all I need to worry about is getting the right camera angle so that is basic multicam editing and you can do up to 16 angles so if you're on a massive crew doing a massive sort of you know feature like film you have 16 cameramen then you can sync this all up and it uses the audio to sync these clips together so that is kind of the first use case and that is really helpful to be able to do that so I'm just going to stop this so what am I talking about when I say about this powerful thing and how great it is recently and what I've discovered this week so I was shooting a music video in the week just gone and it was just me it was a small job I was doing it for a friend Kandee who is a function singer and musician and she wanted to put together some sort of show real stuff for her function songs that she does so we went to Brighton electric a local practice room and I set up my sort of interview setup which was two cameras but in order to do a good sort of in order to make an interesting video for the singing I wanted to have more than just those two angles so what we did is we did take one where we shot with one camera on a tripod nice and wide and then we did the second shot I was on the monopod and I moved around and then we did another take where the tripod camera was much tighter and then again I chose a different angle and had the other camera on them a pod and then we again do a third take and this time I chose another camera angle with the tripod and sort of hand held the camera so it in total I had six recorded takes of a Sun so in my mind I was thinking that multicam editing because it syncs on the audio I would have to I could choose my take one and my camera one and my camera two from take one and I could synchronize those and then I could choose my camera one and my camera two from take two and I would be able to sync those and then I would pick my camera one and my camera two from take three and I would be able to sync those however once I got all of the footage into Final Cut I just sort of selected it all from that particular tag and magically it managed to sync them up even though they were different takes there must have been enough similarity in the audio because there was a backing track playing even though kandi was singing I mean she was singing the same words but they were different takes so from a computing you know algorithmic point of view I have no idea how it managed to identify them but I'm going to show you now because I think this is incredible and I'm certainly going to be using this again so we come back to the screen I'm just going to open my browser again and sorry Ross you're going now so what we've got in the browser this time is I have got Kandi's studio recording of the song that we were shooting the video for and I have then got the various take so I've clicked on the song and now I'm going to come on click this clip two three four five six so I've got six different versions of the song six different camera angles and three physical tapes we did the three actual takes of it so I'm going to right click and I'm going to say new multicam clip this time I'm going to say candy so real I'm going to select that and it's probably going to think about it a little bit longer this time but still not a massive amount of time when you consider what it's actually having to do and again you can see it's a badly new multicam clip into our browser and if I drag this into the timeline and as I did before I'm just going to close that so we're done with it and this time I'm going to go for nine angles here and just like I did before because we've actually gotten audios this time I am going to select the audio and then when I go back to the video I can just select the video so what you see here is immediately you're going to see that we've got six different tapes and this jump it forward so that you can see amazingly even though they were sort of different takes it's still managed so it's almost as if I had six cameramen even though it was me in the tripod but still that's that's pretty effective and then just like before if I've set this little icon here to just the video I can then skip through and whenever I click on a different camera it's going to change that angle put the cut into the timeline like just like before and yeah it does an absolutely incredible job I mean I don't know there we go so yeah absolutely great [Music] so I mute that because probably haven't got permission to use that song but yeah I just thought that was really incredible so there you have it multicam editing introduction to motor cam editing and how incredibly powerful it is now I don't know how that would work if you were using sort of dialogue or something like that but certainly because we were playing that backing track nice and loud during all of the takes that is something which I will definitely be using again if shooting future music videos which I very much hope to do because I think they're quite fun quite a fun thing to do that's everything for this week I hope you enjoyed that found that helpful if you did give the video a like down below and think about subscribing to my channel I do lots of videos like this tips tutorials gear reviews the general journey of a filmmaker finding his way so yeah have a subscribe and then you'll get notified when I next upload a video other than that that's best for this week and I'll see you soon [Music]
