hey my name is Adam ashan I'm a singer songwriter and vocal coach and one of the questions that I get asked most often is can we develop vibrato so the simple answer is yes you can develop vibrato and then usually the follow-up question is will it happen automatically or is it something that I actually have to work on I personally believe that it can happen automatically for some people they've had some students that as they improved their voice and they become more free and their vocal mechanism frees up a lot the vibrato naturally starts to come in without them really thinking about it or forcing it to happen but for a lot of people that's not necessarily gonna happen and for those people I highly recommend doing some specific exercises that can encourage it to come out now if your voice is not ready or free or relaxed enough the vibrato is not going to come in but in order to encourage that to happen we do these exercises and when your voice is ready and it is free enough the vibrato will come in if you're interested in learning more on how to sing I created a resource that I wish would have been around when I was starting to sing with the subscription I've created you get access to all of the courses that I've created and more that are coming you get access to all of my private lesson recordings that I have from other students so you can learn vicariously through them and you get monthly one-on-one lessons with me all of this is available for one low monthly price and it's a very well-rounded approach to learn how to sing click the link down below to get access now now it's important to note that vibrato itself is actually quite relaxing to the voice because essentially what it is is note bends around a note so let's say I'm going for the note ah and then if I put vibrato on there's a slight oscillation around that No and so what happens is that no Bend goes around that note and we are ears are actually tuned to enjoy vibrato as well so listeners enjoy vibrato and it's actually good for the voice so if you find that you're getting locked up vibrato can often release a lot of those problems and tensions now scientists have studied the phenomenon of vibrato and they found that what is most pleasing to our ear is six oscillations per second so six of those no bends per second you can do it a little bit faster which is something we call a tremolo or you could do it a little slower which is like a wobble it sounds like it's like usually very like held down that wobble is the result of too much pressure put on the vibrato the vibrato needs freedom in order to float and that floating feeling is what's going to bring it up to six oscillations per second so it's very helpful to know exactly what's happening with the pitch itself but what is actually happening with the physicality of our voice so we have a larynx right here I don't know your background in singing anatomy and technique so I'm gonna go from the basics this is your larynx right so your larynx is your Adam's apple and your larynx actually is a piece of cartilage that sits on top of another piece of cartilage and so it has the ability to rock back and forth back and forth on that second piece of cartilage so when it rocks forward what happens is the vocal cords stretch when it rocks back the vocal cords shorten and so when you have that stretch happening we're going to a higher pitch when we shorten they're going to a lower pitch so as we do vibrato to be able to hit these pitches at a really really quick speed that larynx tilts back forth back and forth back forth back forth really really really quick and so that rocking motion is what allows the vibrato to kick in naturally so you can always change the pitch artificially but that's going to end in a very slow sounding vibrato we want to make sure that there's a rocking motion happening so what we need to do is be able to encourage that rocking motion to happen so what we do as far as exercises is we can play around with two different notes and we can kind of Bend those two notes to be able to help to assist us in finding that vibrato float so try this exercise with me what we're gonna do is we're gonna take one note and we're gonna take another note that's below it and we're going to rock back and forth between the two artificially we'll start on an 'a and these notes are semitone apart let's go so our goal is I mean obviously I'm sure the first time you're not going to get that but we want to try to speed it up as we go so that's it again and you'll notice as you start to speed it up there'll be this push or this kind of feeling of wanting to go faster so what we could do is play on different notes try that and then we go and if this is too high we could start lower and if you notice that you're not quite able to move it past that point [Music] you're not quite able to get to that vibrato part what you could do is try a different vowel or a different word so some people find yeah really helps yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah I had one student that couldn't do it on the ah but was very much able to do it on the yeah so what we could do is try that on different pitches yah yah yah yah yah yah yah yah yah and then don't feel locked into just those two options you can do it on Oh Oh or you could do it on [Music] or you could try with E [Music] try this exercise on a daily basis it's going to take some time to really play around with what combination / word / bowel is the secret weapon to be able to kind of find that vibrato in your voice and it could be that right now your voice just isn't ready and it's level of freedom at this point but keep on developing your voice and keep on working with this specific exercise playing around with all the different vowels and different words that you might find and so by doing both of those together eventually you're going to reach a point where your voice is free enough and you're going to be able to find that relaxation in the throat to be able to have a spinning vibrato my next tip is something that was extremely helpful for me when I was first learning vibrato I started with no vibrato but I really wanted to be able to improve him and work on that and so what I did was I listened to one of my favorite singers with vibrato so what I wanted to do is pick your favorite singer with the vibrato that you envied the most and tried to really really mimic them to the nth degree and that's what I did i sat with Freddie Mercury's love of my life and his live version at Wembley Stadium and I listened to it over and over and over again and tried to copy it over and over and over again the more that you do this and it has to get to an obsessive level which it kind of got for me like to really be able to develop it it almost has to become your obsession it will come if you try the suggestions in this video you will find over time your voice will develop vibrato so I hope you
