hello guys in today's tutorial I'm going to be showing you guys how to create this pendulum swinging animation that switches whenever it crosses the back of any of our characters the characters we have here and as usual this tutorial was inspired by a video from Vox Why Us election only gives us two choices established parties but if Congress and this is actually the second tutorial I'm making from this video and I also be making a third one so you don't miss out please do subscribe and like this video so you get our tutorials in the future thank you so inside of After Effects I've already created the composition that is that is 920 by 1080 already so you can use whatever resolution you want so the first thing we need to do is I'll bring in our background and all the assets I'll be using here I will upload them online and so that you can use them in case you want to follow the tutorial so I just drag down this background of the White House that I've downloaded and so after that we know really need to do anything to this you just click off make sure no layer is selected then go down to your pen to and turn off the F turn off the F and ring up the stroke and make sure your stroke is four pixels and it's black you can use whatever color you use you want and I'm just going to bring in our grid here so that we can have a kind of ruler just so that our line is not it's not paint so I'll click the first line I'm going to create is going to be outside of our frame here just maybe outside a bit here then the second one will be just above this window here and we have our straight line now you can turn off your grid and seems like it's not straight but we work with that so after that the next you need to do is go down to your anchor two here or P behind two and we drag this anle C point right down to the to the top of our to the top of our line here above above the frame once you've done that click off then the next thing we need to do is draw the circle we'll be using so this circle just go down to your rectangle to and select the ellipse to then while press down on shift and drag a circle o I need to make sure it's the field is turned turned on and turn off the Rook then hold down shift then draw your circle so we have perfect round circle like this you're just going to increase the size a bit here then bring up your position parameter and connect it to just align it with the with your line so I'm just going to re rename this quickly this will be maybe our string or we call it rope then this will be our ball so after that what you need to do is parent your ball to your rope like this then after that click on the rope and bring up the rotation parameter so this is just going to be a 3 seconds animation so I'm just going to click here and hold on the three seconds this thing I'm going to Click N to mark that as the end of our timeline that when you play it it only goes from the one from 0 to 3 seconds here the next thing you need to do is click on your key frame icon here then I'll make this let's say 40 the rotation 40° I think this is okay then go down to the middle of to the center of the timeline maybe I'll just pick uh 1 second and 12 and 12 fres and I'll make this - 40 so it goes to the other end like this then again I'll go down to 3 seconds then take it back to 40 now so now when you play back see that it's rotating but it's a bit mechanical so to solve this I'm just going to highlight all three key frames then press F9 to make it easy ease then another thing you need to do another thing you need to do again is I'll go down in the 3 seconds Mark I'll go one frame backwards by pressing control and your left key your back your back key or I don't know left key you go one FR backwards and I'll press n so that that will be the end of our timeline and we doing this because this last key frame here is the same thing as the first one here so that's so that and that animation doesn't repeat itself we need to go back one frame there's another video that explains this in detail so I'm just going I'm not going to go into details about it so also select the three key frames here click on include include in this in property include this property in the graph editor then we go to the editor here then select this then I'm just going to bring this closer here maybe I'll make both of them close to 50 you bring them to as close to 50 as you can mustn't be 50 exactly depending on the animation you want to do so like that so this is okay so now when you play back you see that smooth and very easy that's okay so the next thing we need to do is bringing our logo the logo of the democratic and the Republican party I'm just going to highlight both of them and put them on top so before that also I'm going to duplicate the ball then P one in between this I just going to turn one of the logo off then resize this to fit our our ball so I'm just going to click s and resize this here and just zoom in a bit to do that and this should be okay so I'm just going to turn that off and do the same thing for the second logo which is really really big and just so just and also make sure your ball is in the middle like the animation stops in the middle this is really hard to fix in I think I'm okay with this well I'll just make this 13 yeah so I'm okay with this so I'm just going to print each of the logos to their respective bars so I'm just going to parent this Democrat to the first ball here then this to this one here and now you see this one is a bit bigger it's fine you can readjust it in your own animation now you see that our logos is following our animation like that so what you're going to do next is sorry let me just increase this Democrat I don't like the looks just make this 20 that's nice so I'm just going to once you've done that I'm just going to bring in our characters here this two Deb us our presidential candidates here just going to zoom this to about two I think this is okay make it 224 bring down the position position oh there's something I need to do I need to separate the layer so I'm just going to import that separately I'm going to import it as a composition leave the layer size so now when I bring them in they are separate so that's I forgot to do that put it on top here so you can animate them separately [Music] I'm just going to click in Click the both of here our second come up click the both of them and scale them together I put them at 240 240 something this is still pretty big I think this is okay so I'm just going to click on on this one here I want to swap it or transform it so that it faces the other side I'm just going to do this like this here now this is fine and also our logo passes behind them so here is to a quick animation that we're going to do now and also before we move on each of the logo should be below the ball and I will make the logo the alpha mat of the top layer like this you get this so now we going to create a quick animation so I'm just going to disable this first then let me expand my timeline here now come right down to where the B goes behind the characters behind the characters and I will move one of the characters then I'm going to click control shift d to split it to split the second one I'm going to actually bring this one here now then down in the b in the B section Republican logo I'm going to press t on my keyboard to bring in the opacity then click on the key frame here to create a key frame key frame icon then go one frame forward then bring down the opacity then also go up to the go up here to the our second logo here go back one frame forward where this one stops and bring in our opacity click on your key frame timeline here then bring down the opacity then go one frame forward then make that 100% And you see that when it crosses it switches to this one here so when it comes back again when it comes back again here now I'm going to click on this diamond shape here to make another key frame and go on frame forward and make that zero the opacity zero then come down to the second bar here go back one frame forward click here to create a key frame then go forward then bring this up yeah and now when you click here now you see that our animation oh sorry one last thing we need to also when it switches where it switches I'm going to click control shift d to split that once you split that duplicate this one here bring it up then move it to the other side now when you play back you see that we have a nice animation here that switches when it crosses each other characters so you can depending on your project you can fin tune this and really work with this you can really and take advantage of this technique here to do so many other things so as always if you enjoyed this video please like And subscribe and if you have any question please don't hesitate to ask me any question on the comment section or you can also reach me out in my Discord or on Twitter I have both links in the description below so thank you and I'll be uploading another tutorial Maybe by Monday or tomorrow so stay tuned thank you
