hi guys and welcome back to my channel today we're going to be talking about how to choose a product [Music] so my last video i got a really good response so thank you guys so much for watching that video and whoever commented on there thank you so much for commenting the number one request was to make a video on how to choose a product on amazon so let's get right into it because we have a lot to talk about so in a second i'm gonna start sharing my screen but before i do i wanted to give you guys some pointers on the types of products to stay away from so number one you should stay away from items that weigh more than 1.5 pounds that's because the shipping for those items is just gonna cost way too much and it might really bite into your profit margins you should also stay away from anything that plugs into a socket because you might face a lot of technical issues with those types of items and that way you're gonna face a lot of returns and you wanna stay away from returns as much as possible you also wanna stay away from anything that has batteries or that is flammable i'm sorry if you guys can hear my ice machine in the background i just turned it off but it takes a while to turn off so sorry if you can hear that so yeah stay away from batteries or anything that is flammable because amazon requires a lot of tests for these products so i feel like it's just not worth the hassle to go through all of that and they also have only a certain amount of products that have like hazmat issues that are allowed in their warehouse so they're super specific when it comes to those i would just recommend staying away from them all together also stay away from products that have lots of variations and that's because your startup cost is going to be way too much if you have five different colors or if you have you know different sizes or just a lot of different variations the more variations you have the more stock you have to purchase obviously so your just startup cost is going to be way too high so i would stay away from those also anything fragile for a similar reason to anything that plugs into a socket things might break while shipping things might break while shipping from the amazon warehouse to your customer and you might experience a lot of return so now that we have covered all of that i'm gonna start sharing my screen with you guys and we can go through the process of how to choose a product all right so i have my amazon open right in front of me so the first thing that you're gonna do is you're gonna download your jungle scout extension so i have it right here just because i haven't done a search yet so it's not showing up but jungle scouts is going to be your x-ray vision to amazon you're going to be able to see how much revenue sellers are making uh when they started selling their product um the reviews that they're getting et cetera you're just going to be able to see a lot of information that you wouldn't see normally as an amazon buyer so definitely download jungle scout before you go on i'm going to have a link down below the link that i have down below is going to get you a discount but it is an affiliate link so if you don't want to use that you can just google jungle scout and go through that but i just have that so i can offer you guys a discount too so your first step is going to be to go on amazon and you're going to go over here in the categories right here where it says shop by department and you're gonna click on see all now a tip that i have for you is try to choose a category that you are interested in something that you're passionate about you i think you should know something about that category so that you're able to tell is that product good is it not so choose something that you're interested in like for example uh if you have a pet and you're interested in pet supplies that's a really good category um maybe toys kids and baby that's a really interesting category what about sports um so just something that you're passionate about so that you're able to build a brand around it so i'm going to go into pet supplies and you're going to notice that the deeper you go into a category you're going to get even more categories to go into so you want to keep clicking through until you find the very last list which i call the product list so over here once i clicked on pet supplies i got pet profiles dog supplies dog food cat supplies cat food so these are all different categories within pet supplies so let's say for example i want to go into dog supplies then again you're going to see here you have food treats apparel beds and furniture cameras and monitors carriers and travel products again you have a lot of different categories right here so i'm going to click on collars harness and leashes so last you're going to see right here is you have dog harnesses dog collars dog leashes so these are all types of products that you can click on now just to make sure we're gonna for example click on dog collars and you only have one other category under that which is basic dog collar so i mean dog collars is a good category to stick to and you're gonna see your pattern of what you clicked on right here so it's pet supplies and dog supplies then dog collars than dog collars and basic dog collars so there's you can go really deep into a category this is my point here and you just want to keep clicking through clicking through what interests you until you get to the very last product type so let's say we're going for dog collars okay so you want to click on the jungle scout extension right here so that it can analyze the list of products that you see in front of you this is the very first thing so i'm just going to explain to you the screen that you see in front of you so you have the product name and it's going to show you the product image right here you have the brand which is whoever is selling it you have the price of the product you have the monthly sales and daily sales which is units and you have your monthly monthly revenue which is the dollar amount that they're selling in every month and you have date first available so these columns are very important and i'm going to show you how to read them and to analyze them in a second so the first thing you want to do is sort it by monthly revenue you want the most and then going down so descending and you just want to look through here to see are there people that are making over forty thousand dollars that's the number one thing you wanna look at so i see clearly that yes there are people that are making over forty thousand dollars so now are there people that are making over forty thousand dollars that have been selling for less than a year or we can even say less than two years yes there are so we have here 2021 started selling 2021 2021. now you want to see which is another thing reviews how many reviews do they have so do they have less than 400 reviews you can see here this person for example is selling 62 dollars every month they have started in may 2021 um and they have only 51 reviews they're selling 26 units a day so this is very interesting we're gonna open that and we're gonna keep going so i see over here again 2021 400 reviews not bad and they started and they're making seventy eight thousand dollars so we're also going to click on this another one right here um this is 2019 so they've been selling for more than two years and they only have 75 reviews so i wouldn't take this as too much of an example because they've been selling for such a long time i would say by that time they should have more than 75 reviews so i would disregard that one here's another one right here 65 000 they're selling every month 2021 they also started in may and they only have 25 reviews so we're gonna click on that so the good thing um and the reason why i am choosing this is you want uh to make sure that first of all your product has demand so that's why we're checking that they're selling for over forty thousand dollars you wanna make sure that there isn't a lot of competition that's why we're checking for under 400 reviews and you want to make sure that you don't have to wait too long to actually sell the product and that's why we're checking that they haven't launched uh more than two years ago so as long as you can find two to three um two to three competitors that have those criterias that i'm talking about then i think that that is a good product for you to follow but that's not all that we look at so we're gonna go ahead and look at these three listings that we chose and analyze those even further all right so we have here it's a bark collar dog barking control training collar with beef vibration and shock for small medium large dogs so it looks like this is a collar that prevents dogs from barking anti false triggering bark colors will only be activated when detecting dog bark and neck movement interesting so now here's the thing with this that would make me wary about it is that this has a battery so like they require a lot of different tests for this so anyway let's keep going and look at some more this is also the same thing dog training collar with remote rechargeable waterproof two pack dog shock collar so it's also a shock collar okay this right here is interesting this is a premium dog collar adjustable heavy duty nylon collar with quick release metal buckle so this seems like a regular collar no battery which is good but again it has a lot of sizes so i would say these are prime examples of products that i would stay away from just because over here you have a lot of variation so you have several colors you have several sizes which means your inventory is going to cost you a lot and over here you have a battery so these i would stay away from so let's go back to the drawing board and maybe go to dog supplies again let's pick for example dog toys and we're gonna do the search all over again and as i said now we're looking for those same criterias all right so we can see here that there are people that are selling for over 40 000 or maybe just a bit under which is good to consider as well even if it's 37 you know up to 35 that's also good to consider uh you can see here that you know they have been selling for less than a year these people started in february 2021 and they have 77 reviews so this is a cool dog toy it's a it looks like it's in the shape of a beer um there's also another one here they started selling 20 21 in april 2021 and they only have 61 reviews let's go maybe a little bit higher so we have here 58 000 in revenue they started selling 20 21 and they have 229 reviews so this is really good so we're just gonna uh take a look at these listings and analyze them just like we did with the other dog collars okay so this is an interesting product over here so this looks like it's a dog toy that kind of attaches to the ground so that your dog can play with it and pull on it and as you can see here it says that you are able to put in you know snacks or little treats for your dog inside the dog toy so this is a very interesting product because it sells for more than 15 dollars which i'm going to touch on in a little bit and it has less than 400 reviews um and it sells pretty good and it seems like it would be a light product so how you can tell if the weight of the product is you go down and it says right here item weight is 1.21 pounds which is good so as i said we want under 1.5 as long as it's under 1.5 you should be good so i like this and let's keep going and look for some more so this right here pop lights this is cute pop light and pups blue ribbon funny dog toys so funny dog toys i guess that's a whole other category right funny dog toys um you have here you know three variations but it's not too bad it seems like it's just the same product in different packages or a different set all right and then we're just gonna go down to take a look at the item weight 3.9 ounces which is let's do the math right here ounces two pounds uh that's very light so it's like 0.24 pounds so this is a really good choice as well so funny dog toys is um really interesting and then you have here seems like just a variety pack of dog chew toys so it's a 16 pack you have 16 different chew toys um in a pack and they have 61 reviews so not a lot but they are making almost 40 000 a month and the item weight for this is 1.94 pounds so it seems like this one is a little bit heavier because um they have 16 different toys in the pack so i would maybe say don't completely rule it out because you could make this i this you can make this item lighter than 1.5 if you wanted to just depending on the types of chew toys that you choose to put in there so i would not completely rule it out just yet so this seems like a really interesting product for me i like this one the most because i think it's interesting um i think it's cool like you could do something different with it um so we're gonna take a look at this right here so now after you found a product that you think is interesting i would say maybe gather two or three different ideas for products one thing to keep in mind that i said i'm going to touch on later is the price of the product you want to make sure that they are selling it for over 15 and the reason i say that is because anything that's under 15 you're probably just not gonna make enough margins for it to be worth your time your aim should be to have at least ten dollars of profit so if you if you have at least ten dollars of profit that means your amazon fba fees and your cost of products your packaging your shipping everything like that has to be under five dollars if the product is under 15 so i would just say it's not worth it try to go for something that sells for over 15 so this dog toy is selling for 25 and clearly it's selling because they're making um 40 dollars a month so this is a really good option now once you've found a product that you like um i would now go on alibaba and take a look at how much are the sellers selling it for over there and is it profitable so now we're gonna go into calculating profits go on alibaba.com and we're going to search for dog toys for aggressive chores since this is the main keyword the main keywords is going to be probably the first three to four words of the listing after the brand name if there is a brand name okay so it seems like this is almost the same product and it sells for two dollars your minimum quantity is 100 pieces this is also basically the same product it's for four dollars it seems like i'm pulling up a lot of different results here so doctors for aggressive chores rope toy oh let's just put suction cup maybe that will pull up more accurate results yep so right here you can see this one is for 3.7 this right here it looks like they have lots of different shapes and colors for 2.7 3.6 so maybe put your average as three dollars or 3.5 for your product cost so you want to calculate your product cost how much you're going to pay to buy it and your shipping cost and you want your packaging cost as well and your fba fees so i'm going to show you how to calculate all of that um now i would say put around 3.5 dollars for this because it seems like there's lots of different varieties now obviously the price that you see on here is not going to be the price you end up paying you might pay less you might pay more depending on the supplier so you're gonna have to reach out to them to ask about the price but we're just taking this now briefly just so that we can calculate our profitability so let's say we have 3.5 dollars for product cost for shipping cost i'm going to assume that we are doing air shipping and the reason why i assume air shipping is because your first batch of products you want it to arrive fast so you can get started as soon as possible and then your second batch you can take a little bit more time and manage it more so i would say for a product that is 1.5 pounds or lighter the average that you should add for express shipping is about a dollar to each unit now obviously depends on the size of the product but something that is small if you can fit i would say maybe like 100 units in a large sized box then i think one dollar is a good estimate again this is just an estimate but it's good to just put a number out there and then even try to aim towards it uh just so you know can i afford to pay more for shipping or do i have to like do i not have the option to pay express shipping and i should maybe just use the ocean and wait so we're gonna add a dollar on for shipping because i think that is kind of the average of how much it costs per unit to ship express and then for packaging i would also add on a dollar because i don't recommend even spending more than that if you can go down to 50 cents like i don't recommend spending a lot on packaging especially at the beginning because you know people will just open up the packaging and they'll just throw it out like with amazon it's not really make it or break it your make it or break it is your product photography that's your packaging you know in terms of for example if it's on a shelf packaging is super important on amazon your product photography is super important so don't spend a lot on packaging at the beginning it's not worth it so keep it to 50 cents to a dollar i think per unit i think that's a good margin so i'm just gonna write this down so i can calculate it with you guys so i don't lose track so uh 3.5 let's say plus one for shipping plus one dollar for packaging then we're going to calculate our fba fees so we're gonna go on the fba fee calculator so you can see here on your amazon seller central you are able to calculate your amazon fba fees they have a fulfillment by amazon revenue calculator so this is really good because you are able to just you know take the ace in and they calculate your fba fees for you so let's choose the asin for this oh sorry where's the product yep this right here let's take their acen okay so as you can see here with the fulfillment by amazon revenue calculator i've filled in the information so i said that we are going to sell this product for 24 and i filled in that you know shipping it to amazon is going to cost me one dollar per unit because that's what we calculated and my fulfillment by amazon fees are going to be 4.95 so from 24 they're taking 495 for fba fees um and over here so it says your total fulfillment cost is 5.95 and i put in my cost of product to be 3.5 so as you can see it tells me that my profitability is 10.89 which is spot on that's what you want you want it to be at least 10 dollars and obviously this is not gonna be at the beginning uh with amazon it takes around six months to a year uh for you to start seeing profits that you are able to pay yourself with but as long as you have that ten dollar profit margin and you are able to get to it then that's good so this is the easiest way for you to be able to calculate your fba fees but just in general if you don't have a seller account just yet a good rule of thumb is amazon will take 33 percent from your selling price okay so now that we said you know we're good to go and we can profit at least ten dollars from this product there are a few questions that i want you to ask yourself and i want you to find the answers to before you decide that this is the product you want to go ahead with number one you want to ask yourself can i build a brand around this product now the reason why i talk about this is because the whole point again of opening up your amazon store is to create a brand you don't want to open up a store just to sell random products i think that business model you know it might make you some money but it's probably going to fail pretty quickly because you cannot sustain it so you want to think can i build a brand around this around this product are you passionate about it are you able to you know have like a persona for your brand and a question that goes hand in hand with the first one is what would your second product be so let's say for example if you're doing dog toys then maybe you could do a different dog chew toy maybe you could do a pack of you know the different like you know 16 different dog toys maybe you can do some dog treats so what is the second product that you would launch after launching this one and i think it's really good to always have your second product in mind when you're launching your first product just so you have some type of direction and you know where you're going with the brand the third question is how can you make this product better so a good way to answer this question is to go on that listing that you found and take a look at the negative reviews and this is really good this is like free information that's being given to you right here on amazon with the negative reviews you can find out what did people not like about this product and how can you improve it is there room for improvement so as you can see here the cord needs to be higher quality because you know a labrador a mixed labrador was be able was able to chew through the cord in less than 10 minutes on his first day yeah so as you can see here the rope is just in general not the greatest quality so the negative reviews i'm not gonna go fully through this but in general the negative reviews are a really good place to fish for uh you know how to improve this product and how to make it better than what's already there on amazon now the last thing that you should think about is how can you make it different how can you make this product different from what's already there because your product needs to stand out if you're selling exactly the same thing why would people go for yours that has zero reviews and not go for the one that has 200 reviews so you want you want your product to be different so people have a reason to go for yours instead of going for your competitors so as long as you can answer these questions as long as you can come up with good answers for them and you are ready and certain that you are able to create a product that is better than what's already there on amazon then i would say 100 go for that product so that is it you guys i really hope you enjoyed this video thank you so much for watching and i hope it was helpful to you um and if you liked it please hit the like button and subscribe to my channel and i'm
