[Music] the method I think everybody should start with this spring and especially because these fish are on the hunt and moving is a power bait off of the bottom setup most of the time in the springtime when you're going to be fishing any body of water it's going to be windy as you can see today we have a real stiff wind going across the lake and it's going to be hard to be casting and retrieving a spinner even though we're going to be doing that today and show you how to kind of counteract doing that with the wind we're going to start with our most effective piece and that's going to be fishing from the bottom with a tight line a very important part of this setup is the rod the reason you're going to want to rod in between about 6 and 1/2 ft to about 8 ft long is because you want your lineup off the water because you're fishing from the bank it's not so much about the cast ability but it's the fact that you need to be able to see your Rod tip up off the ground so you want something with a soft tip and a nice long length like this one here this is a 76 4 to 10 lb Okuma ailo Rod just like all my other setups I'm going to show you today I have a 10 lb addicted enforcer braid a C30 kimar reel and a bumper line of 10 lb test from my braided line I'm going to go to a little barrel swivel this is very simple it's just a barrel swivel that I'm going to tie one end to my braid and then the other end is going to be to my lighter leader line so that the fish aren't spooked by that high visibility braid before I do that I'm going to take an egg weight system and I like these egg weights uh these are just lead weights you can pretty much find anywhere um at any tackle store most anywhere around that has trout nearby we'll have these little guys I'm going to take my egg weights and these are going to help me feel the bite more but today because the wind's not blowing extremely extremely hard I'm going to go with a 3/8 ooun piece of lead how you're going to choose your weight selection depending on where you're fishing is due to the wind and the depth of where you're fishing if I'm going to have something that's going to be very very calm the fish might be spooky the water is clear I'll go with even just a piece of split shot but if I have high winds and I have a broken surface I'm going to go with something around a 3/8 to a/ O if I'm fishing very very deep water and there's any sort of current I'm going to want something a little bit heavier so I'm going with 38 Oz today from here I'm going to take a small plastic bead slide it in between my weight and my swivel that I'm going to put on and that will protect my weight from hitting my knot and ruining that knot just in case I catch a big fish so one side of the swivel gets my main line I'm going to do just my typical clinch knot here seven wraps through the eye of the swivel go back through the eye I created on my swivel there we go we're ready with one end now I'm going to take a four six or an 8 lb liter normally you're not going to want to go anywhere over about 8 lb test because being that we are in a lake even though there are big fish you have a lot of room to fight these fish and with your drag properly set you shouldn't have to worry about breaking too many fish off so today because it is semi Clear Water I'm going to go with a 4 lb test about 4 ft should do sorry Mom to the other end of my swivel I'm going to attach my 4lb test just like so and so you guys know there are pre-tied leaders you can buy at the store if you've gone through and watched any of our complete how-to go trout fishing tutorials here on YouTube we've actually gone right into Walmart picked everything out shows you the prices and taught you exactly what you need to go out there and do it so there is pre-tied leaders that you can buy but this knot works great for me but if you're not familiar with fishing yet you can get those pre ties but I like to do it this way because I can customize the length of my leader Your Leader length is going to depend on what kind of structure you have on the bottom if there's tall grass or tall rocks you need a longer lader so today I know the bottom is only going to have grass about this tall so I'm going to tr myself about a 3ft liter the hook I'm going to use here today is a number four addicted enforcer bead hook we make these hooks all the way down to about a size six even so anywhere from a six to a size four is what you're going to want to use depending on again the depth and the weight that you're going to be fishing one important thing about your hook selection is making sure that it's a light hook there are hooks that are made specifically for bait out there many different brands but we like the mustad bait hooks but today I'm using one of these little beat hooks because I know there's big fish the real key is you just want a light up hook so that the power bait can float up off the bottom and properly fish out there in the lake now for my power bait you guys can see here I have a few different kinds I have the dough I have the eggs I have some corns I got some Puffs and I got some garlic balls what's important when it comes to power bait is getting a multitude of styles and colors I have about two different colors of the dough two different colors of the little pellets and I have about two different colors of a different scented kind so I like to do is really have a variety of them so I know when I'm changing legs when I'm changing styles of fishing that I can switch to the different kind of bait here we go going with the green Sparkle today put it in my hands once I've rolled that up in my Palms like you just saw I'm going to put it on the outside of the hook use my fingers like a little trap and make myself a little diamond shape just like that perfect I got my hook Gap Pok it out this side we're ready to fish okay now I want to figure out where I want to cast I can see over here is some structure and some docks I can see there's a rope over there don't want to cast over there so I'm going to point straight towards home Rod sit back look where I want to go sender fly beautiful okay next step find yourself a rod holder now once your line is out into the lake it's very very important that you reel up your slack once you find your rod holder there's rod holders you can buy at the store you can make one out of a stick but today I have the one on the kayak that we're using so I'll be able to do this your Rod should be pointed about 45° angles I don't like it laying too far down towards the lake because the bite doesn't register super well so what I'm going to do I'm going to reel up till I have a little slight bed in my line and depending on how windy it is during the day it depends on how much of the vend you you can get but as you can see there I have a little bit of slack I have line that the fish is going to be able to take and swim away with as it starts to eat so that it fully swallows that bait and we keep them hooked time to [Music] wait finish this when you get [Music] home I'll take and call all right I got [Music] oh I'm getting bit I'm getting bit oh y he's there he's there now that I feel that bite I'm going to reel up a little bit he swimming away with it got him on fish on got him why you got to bark so much oh that's a good one too yeah yeah fish number one hell yeah oh it's that jumper look how shiny it is oh that's a good one woohoo nice job little sweet there it is everyone fish number one of the day she's a be look at that you can see here I'm not the only one who has hooked them but it chose to show you how important your knots are I only used a 4B test here today but there's one two go got somebody else's line in there and someone else's hook but he's ours well there it is onto our next technique two of the most effective lures in the world and honestly my very favorite are actually one of our proud sponsors and that is castmaster and rooster tail so that's the ones we're going to start with talking about today first setup and probably the easiest of all just given the simple nature of the Beast is the cast Master setup what I have here is I have a 2 to six lb ultral light Rod by Okuma this is a cilo model they make the ssts they make guid select Pros but having that 2 to six lb Rod range anything from about 6 and 1/2 ft up to about 8 and 1/2 ft is the robod that you're going to need for the selection I have a C30 kimar reel on this setup the reason I have a C30 is because the perfect size for trout and it holds a lot of line for if I'm casting in the bank with the cmaster it's not just a clever name the thing flies a country mile next I have a 10 lb addicted enforcer braid line made by tough line and I really like the 10 lb model in that line because it casts very very nice it's smooth it goes through the guys easily and I can see it when it's on the surface of the water now you're probably wondering how the fish don't see that high VI line the thing is is that they do so what I'm going to do is I'm going to add a barrel swivel a size four barrel swivel in between my braided line and and to my leader line I'm going to use a 10 lb ler line on the bottom of that about 3 ft of it so I got 3 ft of my line all the way down and then I add my castmaster so the rooster tail setup is going to be very very similar to the exact same way we set up the old castmaster here same Rod same reel same line all the way down to the swivel but because we have a lighter style of lure like we have here with the rooster tail we're going to use a split shot just just above my line here the reason I'm putting it above my swivel is so that when I cast from the bank I'm not going to be having that split shot slide down to my lure ruin my presentation and ruin the effectiveness of my lure now it's time to talk about shape size and color of your lure selection I have a box full of goodies here and I have actually a bunch of different styles of the lures that we're going to be talking about today as well the castmaster comes in about five different sizes it goes all the way down to I believe the 3/8 all the way up to almost a 1 oz or a 2 oz castmaster the reason these are so effective this one because none of them have a very very very big profile but they allow you to fish deeper and deeper into the river system or the lake system that you're going to be targeting so as we head out and start fishing this today whether you're from the bank or from the boat we'll adjust our size of cast Master to one the depth that we need to be fishing and two the length of the cast that we need to be making to get out there one thing you'll notice instantly about my rooster toil box is how many different colors that I have I have honestly no clue how many skews Yak bit has of these rooster Tails but there has to be a 100 the beauty is find one that you like and appreciate find one that matches the color of the water and of the sky and the situation that you're fishing and take multiples of those to the lake with you so that you're not just a one trick pony and only have a couple different colors in your box and some days the trout are very picky that's the problem with these little B that's why the best fish from out there have a big tackle box and a lot of different options for those picky trouts now on to castmaster colors and sizes the thing about the castmaster is they vary a lot in the side this thing is a 1 oz castmaster and this is a 38 the thing I'm going to use this for is fishing shallower water spots that I want this to fall slower what I'm going to use this for is any kind of trolling or jigging out in the lake why it's effective to have both is because both techniques can be very very useful considering what time of year it is and considering where these fish are in the lake this time of year early spring these fish are going to be up in the shallows they're going to be going and looking for food that is hatching off the banks because we have nice weather all the bug life starting to procreate and these fish are getting ready to eat before the summer starts if I'm going to be out fishing in the middle of the lake in the deep water I'm going to use something like the big cast Masters that I can controll deep and then I can jig deep under the boat now for the most important part of all how am I going to choose my lure the way I do this mainly one is if it's by size it's the depth that I'm fishing if it's by color it's because of the sky color and it's because of the water color of where I'm fishing a lot of times my favorite thing to do is get to the river open up my box realize which one is glowing see which one is talking to me obviously today the Shar Sho looks really good and the whites so I might take one that actually has a little bit of both or just whatever I feel like that one right there that looks really good let's put it on now I've dug through my box looking at the cast Masters and this one is obviously talking to me you guys can see how glowy it is it's a completely different color than the rooster tail that I have that way I know I'm covering the color rainbow now that we're all set up let's go see which one of these works better okay now that you've heard all about the different styles we're going to actually show you how to cast from the bank and then take you out in the link and show you how to fish these from a boat now I chose my 38 ounce castmaster from right here because one I have the wind at my back I want to be able to cast the long ways here because there's a whole lake over there and I want to be able to get this thing as far out there as I can and fish it all the way back to me covering as much range at those fish have as they can let's get to fishing so I like to try to have some sort of system or some sort of strategy when I come up to the bank I don't like to just randomly cast when I'm fishing for trout in a big lake like this because I am stuck on the bank I want to utilize all the water around me so what I do is I start with a clockwise motion I always start from left to right and I go about 15 to 10 ft difference and cast trying to cast the same distance each time so because I've done that I cover this little pie chart I cut I break apart every single section of the water in front of me and then I move down the bank that way you're looking for those hunting fish the trout time you are moving around the edges of the bank so the more you move around to try to find them too the more fish you're ultimately going to find so 20 ft more to the right and the real key to the castmaster is giving this thing a lot of movement a lot of times I'll use my raw tip to bounce it around or I'll reel super super quickly so that I can get that thing really kicking its tail really making a big disturbance in the water and getting those fish oh it's out of the water and getting those fish's attention as they swim by o that's a bomber way out there I'll let it sink for about a three count and then start bringing it back there's many different bits of action you can give this jig you can either jig the thing straight up and down letting it fall like a twitching jig which is a very good way to find the fish and get their attention you can Reel with a nice jigging motion so that thing's going away kicking very fast or you can just do a straight reel and let that spoon work and jump back and forth getting those fishes attention as they swim by all three I find to be very very super effective the main thing is find out what technique you like most adapt that to where you're fishing and go have some fun okay now I've effectively covered this hole because I went from clockwise all the way counterclockwise back again made about 20 Cals now I'm going to relocate and I'm not going to really relocate across the lake I'm going to relocate just out of my casting distance that I could just do and start the whole process over again now I'm going to utilize the same technique with the rooster tail and the castmaster especially when I'm fishing it from the bank but now let's go fish him from the boat okay now that we covered the bank technique for this I'm going to show you guys how to fish it from a kayak or a boat it's nice to have both methods to be able to go out and cover more water lot of people out there are starting to get into kayak fishing a lot of people out there have boats but I wanted to show you guys first how to catch these fish from the bank which is more commonly what a lot of us are going to be able to do but now we're in the kayak and let's do this what I'm going to do here I've changed my castmaster to one of the bigger ones I'm going to use my big guy here because I want to be down a little bit deeper I'm going to have the rooster tail going at the exact same time as I have my cast Master going so I want them at two different water levels the spinner is not going to be able to get as deep just from the resistance of the blade this bad boy is going to be down really close to the bottom and trolling to find those big ones let's get it back there I'm going to get this back I'm not just going to drop it in and let line out I'm actually going to just cast it back to where I want it behind the boat that should do it got it about 506 yards behind the boat if any fish are spooked by the presence of the boat they'll be able to swim around get back to where they were going and see that lure now with the spinner we're going to do the same thing if necessary I'm going to actually add more split shot so that that thing gets down or the banana weights that showed you with the power bait Next Step do the exact same thing turn around Let Her Fly make sure I can feel that blade spinning nothing got tangled in the air and we're fishing fish on already on the rooster to oh I got a Lea we were sabotaged back to work go came on you guys see I have a really really good action going that's what we want we don't want that castmaster doing a full 360 Circle we want that thing just going out there and giving up a very hard vibration cuz the fish with their lateral line and their senses can feel that they can see that and they can hear it as it's going through the water it's making a lot of disturbance so we already hooked one hopefully we get one on the big one rooster tail rooster oh that's a big one too dang it I got to stop I got to stop oh we're going to stop I'm all bent up I'm all bent up that's a good one that's a good one oh coming back this way coming back this way oh oh little he's Towing us around oh that's a really good one that's a really good one little we want that one that one's going home with us Oh Come to Papa Come to Papa yeah that's ours fish on yeah fish in the boat look at how pretty this one is too jeez Louise so far rooster Tails winning this fight but let's be fair we did just film a video a minute ago for cast Masters and we got bit four times on the first pass so that's okay but there's dinner everyone we got him high five and what we have in front of us here is I would say close to a trophy size rainbow trout that we callau out of the lake behind us here really if you're going to fet a trout you want it to be at least over about 4 14 in Long anything under 14 in down to the IL legal size limit which is usually about 6 in it's just a little bit too small and you end up wasting some of the valuable meat on that fish if you Flay such a small specimen here you're going to want to start off with a Faya away fish mat obviously a fish and some sort of sharp Flay knife it's important to have a knife specific to flaying fish because of the small fin blade and the flexibility of that blade you want something that's at least over about 5 to 6 in Long all the way up to about 9 in anything over that isn't really necessary for a small trout like this one here here so I'm going to start this process I'm going to roll the thing over on his back from the anus all the way up to the fins I'm going to cut these little fins out here give myself a little something to hold on to and cut these two pectoral fins off from there I'm going to run my knife through the Belly Up to the fish's jaw giving myself an easy access to that fish's guts cut those guts out TOS in the leg from here I'm going to make a small incision from behind that pectoral fin to the back of the head making sure to not go all the way through the spine now be careful if you do buy a brand new f up they can be very very sharp and you tend to cut right through the back of the head which will ruin this playle idea from here I'm going to lay my knife 90° along the side of the backbone slowly keeping that blade at a slight pitch upward while pushing it down against the backbone with each decision I'm going about 3 to 4 in back towards the tail until we have it a perfect trout filet now the tricky side is the second fillet we're going to make the same incision under the neck make sure not to cut through that backbone once again make the belly go over the blade again keeping that blade nice and flat along that spine till you get the tail and there we have it our second perfect fet now as you can see there's very very little meat wasted to K our respects to the fish now to remove the rib bones this can be the very very trickiest part if you don't have enough confidence in this and you do not want to do this and waste any meat just leave those things on once you cook the meal you'll be able to take that membrane off with those ribs and you won't waste any valuable meat but to show you guys how to do it I'm going to take my scissors or a fork or something that I can hold onto the back of the fish I'm going to make an incision right below those rib bones slowly slide my blade so I can see that blade underneath that membrane the whole time down to your belly and there we have it our rib bones are removed the other side will be the same I'm going to hold up above the rib bones that I'm trying to take off slowly slide that knife down along that area towards the belly just like that we have to beautiful she made now if you guys want to learn more about how to process Salon trout and steel Hood just like you saw here today be sure check the rest of the videos out here on our YouTube channel and until next time you all stay fishy we'll see you out there [Music]
