hey guys on today's video we're gonna be building a dick and I wanted to do a video about framing deck if you're building in debt for yourself and you're getting super frustrated by the different thicknesses and wonder what to do I'm going to show you what we do to deal with it mostly we'll be using this a power planer and we will install all the girders and then take this power planer and flush all the tops of this stuff so it's nice and level and perfectly even when we put our decking on there won't be any humps or dips or weird stuff going on got a look out that you don't have any screws or nails that you're going to hit we set those real deep so basically I took this level and then I just feathered it out these joists rather get out feathered and out alright so here's another spot where these pressure-treated boards were different thicknesses when we got them so I'm gonna take this high board down to match these other two actually go and take that one down just a little bit too with this power planer [Music] all right and if you're a good carpenter out there you know i clogged this planer because i'm planing too fast i need to slow down I know that but I just like to do it fast so I'll slow down now [Music] other note here is that this does have an adjustable depth and I've got it set as deep as it will go what you normally would not do but here we just need to remove a bunch of material quickly and I don't really care how pretty it is because it's gonna get covered on top of decking so we're just setting this thing deep going to town all right we got another really babblin right here and we we actually do try to select boards that are same width but sometimes they'll be the same width on one end which they're pretty close down they're not perfect and then you come down to the other end of the board and it's way different so that's the problem this board is nine and a eight wide maybe nine and three sixteenths at best let's look around this came from the same stack of boards that we got delivered the same day this one measures nine and 9/16 so you can see how dealing with that would cause a huge issue if you didn't do something about it so like I said if you're building your own deck and you're running into these issues don't be surprised and if you have a power planer or you have a table saw you can deal with it and actually still have a good deck even with this crazy lumber okay by the way I'm just gonna take this board off and do it with a thicker one how many think I can plain that out and have it work so oh well all right so I got there a place you can see that's gonna work a lot better right there off the plane it still but not a solid half an inch that's gonna be a lot better so basically in construction there's nothing as easy as you think it's gonna be if we had a bunch of straight boards that had no knots and no cups that were all the same thickness this would be a piece of cake and we'd be done already but you got to do these extra steps because you got lumber that is what it is right okay so all these joists were putting on need joist hangers on them I've seen people put the joist hangers on first then put the joist in I'm gonna show you why I do it after what we do is tack this on with the top perfectly flush with the girder top let me show you why we do that because it seems easier to put this on and then set it in there it would be except for one thing let me show you all right let's look at the problem right here if you put these joist hangers on before you would be flushing them on the bottom of your girder but if you look closely this joist right here is about flush with the girder but this one the board was thicker and so to make it flush on the top of the girder we had to hang it down from the bottom a little bit which is what you want to do if you look up here we're flush on top but it's thicker so it's hanging down on the bottom so that's the problem if you put these babies on before you put your joist on and your joists are all of varying thicknesses which they are if you're using pressure-treated wood then you got a problem and you'll have to deal with that the whole way through the deck so that's why I put these on after the fact we tacked the joist on then put these on touch after the joists are put on fot flush on top all right and the second random tip to save you frustration is to do this do a layout board on the center of your span of your decking before you start your decking and it will straighten all your deck joists so that when you put the decking on all your screws are in a line everything's straight and nice and you don't have to pry stuff around so we've always do that saves you a lot of time makes it look better too alright guys one more trick for today we had this broad here that we were just using to pull a string line I could not pull this thing out of the ground so Jonna is gonna build this little on it and it better work some video alright see if it works oh my goodness that was awesome nice job Jonna you're hard thanks for watching this video is super scattered I apologize but it was a last-second idea that I can help somebody out there build a deck because it can be super frustrating and seem like man is everybody else having these problems that I'm having when I'm trying to build my deck yes even contractors even pro builders are dealing with the same problems and it's easier if you know what to do with some of them
