so Jamie and it's allowed in here but we're gonna show you this section here we're inner stairwell he's built a landing and we're gonna show you just building the landing down just for simplification how to do these stair stringers a super simple way here's the rest of our stairwell going up to the upper floor and I'm not gonna show you all that but it can be done in the same fashion it's gonna be our finished height we're gonna call this the finished floor in this case it's only a tread but just call this the finished or okay now we can measure from here down to the concrete and get a number 45 inches it's very important to measure from the finished surface to the finished surface even if those surfaces are not installed in the house yet you have to know what those Heights are gonna be say a 3/4 for wood floor or is it gonna be a half-inch engineered wood floor or is it gonna be carpet or is it gonna be tile you really need to know you have to know exactly what its gonna be to get it precise alright so we're gonna divide 45 inches into a number that will make our stair rise at comfortable and code passing height all right I got this calculator now it's not a special calculator it's just a regular phone calculator we're gonna figure out how many Rises we need and how high each rise is gonna be so we're gonna take 45 inches blue 45 and we're gonna divide it by a guess of 5 risers this is the ballparking to start with that would give us 9-inch Rises that's too tall all right let's try again 45 inches divided by 6 risers 7.5 inches perfect so that will work that's between 7 & 8 so we're gonna have 6 Rises 7.5 inches per rise per step and that was the ballparking part we guessed once and then we guessed right ok that's pretty much it we've got it established that each rise will be seven and a half inches we'll have six of those rises each cut out run on our stringer will be 10 inches and then we'll have an 11 and a quarter tread that sticks off an inch and a half so now if you stuck around with us this long you may not have now we're gonna do this simple and easy part or finally to the simple and easy part all right now we're gonna build a jig we know that our rise is seven and a half and this board is that's close enough to seven and a half for the example and we know that our run is ten inches even if we're gonna make a mark right there now taking up a scrap of wood and make a straight line between the two points that represents our cut out it is important to know that this corner is indeed square ninety degrees that is very critical next step is to attach it to a scrap piece of wood just as an edge guide and I'll show you why that's gonna be helpful in just a moment there you have it that our jig here we're just going to mark out the correct amount of risers and runs line it up exactly right there too I'm not counting dude we lose count one two three four five steps now we're going to draw our vertical line that's the bottom step okay and this basically figured our angle for us I don't even know what angle it is well you can figure it out now yeah but this jig did it for us let's see what the angle is looks like 36 degrees okay okay we're looking at the very bottom rise so now we're gonna mark it at 7 and a half and Mark it across this very bottom tread we're gonna take off an extra inch and a half this is so important if you forget this which I have in the past then you'll be cutting each step again later in place if you already nailed it okay perfect now when we add the inch of this half tread to each of these this will also be a seven and a half total from bottom to top of tread you'll be taking an inch and a half and adding it on the rest of them so they will also be 17 okay now that we've got that mark out we're gonna get our man Arlo to cut those out and we're gonna try them in the stairwell [Music] these guys are fast they've already got it done you can see that we ended up with seven and a half inch rise on every step let's check this one seven and a half again so that turned out awesome these are just temporarily screwed down we'll come back with some finished treads of the same size and some finish risers when we're done with this if you're an experienced carpenter or a builder you know that this is a framing square and you would know that these handy little adjustable nuts are made especially for marking angles and those angles on stairs is where they come in super handy so we just wanted to show you the way to not have to use one of these or have any special knowledge of what this does I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the person that watched our video and notified us that I have been wearing my hat backwards for about a year I didn't even know it and you know what it's all better now so thank you you
