hey guys it's heather from kelvil plan and today we are going to talk about the love letters planner and how i'm going to be using it in 2021 as part of my keller plan lettering challenge i'm so excited about this challenge if you're someone who is interested in improving your lettering i invite you to join me on this challenge because one of my goals for 2021 is to improve my lettering even more and the only way to do that is to practice practice practice so i've created this challenge to encourage myself and to encourage others to practice their lettering so i'm going to explain all of that how i'm going to use the planner and how you can join in as well so this is the printable for the january lettering challenge this printable is available for anyone i'll link it in the description so that you can grab it and print it it's a double-sided printable but really you just need the front side the back is more of an explanation of the challenge you can print the back as well if you want it has the hashtag for it it has information on my online lettering class which if you want to take that it has the web address here and i'm also offering a 50 off coupon for anyone who's participating in this challenge um the code is love letters that's the name of this planner and so i thought it would be a good code so if you use code love letters you'll get 50 off this course my online lettering course just to give you the basics of lettering it'll be a great place to start um and so that link is here and then it also talks about how if you want to watch videos on me actually lettering these particular words i'm going to do a video each month for my patrons at the super level and higher so if you are interested in watching a video each month on how to letter these exact words then be sure to sign up on patreon before january 1st so that you have access and you would sign up at the super level or higher and that is one of their new perks for 2021 and in the video i'm going to be show teaching you how to letter each word of the month and that will load towards the beginning of the month so that you have it for the whole month okay so now that we've kind of gone over all of that this principle is for anyone you don't have to be a patron to participate in this challenge so this principle is free you can download it i'll also share this on instagram so you can screenshot it if you can't get the printable to work and you can print it punch it add it to your planner i'm going to be putting it on the weekly views of my planner so you can just pop it in here and you can see what word you're supposed to be lettering every day and then the next week you can move it to um the next week so that you can letter the next week's words this printable is one that is for my patrons if you want a bigger printable of the words so the little one is for everyone this bigger one is just for my patrons at the super level or higher so you could print this um if you print it at the regular size it will fit in your big planner if you're using a classic or mini then you can just size it down to fit so on the front it has that same description about the challenge and then it has the 31 words for january and then on the back it has some lettering lines in case you don't have a planner to do this in or if you just want to play an extra place to practice then you have that lettering paper on the back um these are the words for january i tried to choose words that kind of went with a new year um new like things that you might be doing in the new year and then if there's certain holidays i try to incorporate words that go with those holidays so the first word is january then we have toast goal tradition refresh celebrate resolution commitment determination routine and then over here release was my word of the year two years ago so i thought it would be fun to let her flourish was my word this year so i thought that would be fun to let her sticker might seem kind of random but january 13th is actually national sticker day so i thought it was a good word to letter that day then we have shine that was my word of the year three years ago so i thought it'd be fun to let her and then achieve and prosper i just thought those kind of went with a new year dream and equality the 18th is martin luther king day so i thought those were good words for that holiday then we have perseverance um inauguration is on january the the inauguration is on january 20th so i thought that would be a good word then we have success organize complement practice project change patience endurance focus winter and reflect i thought those were just also good words for january so what i'm going to do with this page is i'm going to go to my monthly and i'm going to pop it into my monthly view so that i have it here or if you wanted you could also pop it on the front and honestly it could be cute if you if you didn't like the dividers in this which i like them i think they're really cute but if you didn't like them you could even tape this onto the divider and let this be your divider for your planner so that um like each month the divider is your challenge which i thought was kind of a cute idea too so that way you have it and also one thing i want to point out if you're using the love letters planner for this challenge the planner actually starts a couple of days before the new year but my challenge doesn't start until the new year so if you have these pages here i would actually suggest using these pages to practice writing your name write it in different ways practice different sizes different markers and just really get the hang of writing your name on these pages because i always suggest people lettering their name because the your name is something you're really familiar with writing it's letters you're familiar with because you probably write it more than anything else and so writing your name and just practicing it over here is really good practice and then once you're comfortable with that then you can flip back to the front of your planner and you can letter your name in the front of your planner now if that idea terrifies you and you're like heather i can't do that because it has to be beautiful on my cover page i do offer decal stickers this is actually a name decal sticker you probably can't even tell that it's a sticker because it's on clear sticker paper so once you put it in your planner it just looks like it's printed in your planner but i offer these in my etsy shop it will come with at least six stickers sometimes more depending on the size of your name and it comes in at least three sizes so that they can fit in all sizes of planners if you don't need this many name decals i also offer them in vinyl you can order the vinyl ones in a three set or just one if you just need one if you just have one planner so those are all on my etsy shop i'll put that link in the descriptions for you to check out so that is a sticker but if you want to practice writing your name i would practice it on these days and then come right here when you're ready or you can order it from my etsy shop if you don't think you'll be ready okay i also want to point out how i'm going to be using the monthly in this planner i'm super excited about this idea what i'm going to be doing is i'm going to letter each word on the monthly on its day and i'm going to kind of do it towards the top of the box and then i'm going to leave the lower part of the box open so you can see i already lettered the word january and then i've left this open beneath it the reason i'm not taking up the whole box is because at the end of the year i want to go back through every month and re-letter the word underneath and see how my lettering changes and improves over a year's time i just think that's a really cool idea especially if you're new to pl to lettering because you'll really you'll see the improvement and it will blow your mind so i really suggest using these monthly pages almost like as a progress checker you could do it at the end of the month if you wanted and re-letter it just to see how your lettering has improved in a month's time but i would suggest waiting a year just because you'll really see a lot of improvement if you stick to it so you could just take your marker and letter your words plus this is just kind of a good way to start off the month kind of getting familiar with each word um before you dive in i would also if you're a patron and you sign up for the video you sign up at the level that gets the videos i would suggest doing these before you watch my videos just letter them the way you would letter it um before you watch my video teaching you how to do it because then again you'll be able to compare um if you letter it here without watching my videos and then letter on these watching after watching my videos or while watching my videos you you'll be able to compare the difference you'll be able to see how you're doing things differently um and it's just really cool to watch as you progress so i would suggest doing this first then if you're a patron and you watch my videos teaching you how to letter each word then let her hear and then at the end of the year come back and let her again just to see how you improve so that's what i'm going to do now i'm going to go through it i'm going to let her each of these words on my monthly i'll speed it up so that you can watch it in like super mode so i just finished lettering the words some of them are longer so you need to use more than one box just kind of keep that in mind when you're lettering and then i would suggest taking a pin and making like a key over here so i could do like black lettered on and i'm gonna put today's date the date that i'm filming this it's not january but that's okay i want to know when i lettered it and then when i come back and i letter this in a year i'm going to use a different color and i could put the color over here and i could put when i lettered it just to see the improvement i love that idea so that is what i'm going to be doing with those pages so i'm going to pop these back on the disks and then on these pages i'm going to be this is these are the pages i'm actually going to use when i'm lettering on my patron video so i can't show you now how i'm going to do it actually actually let's just go ahead and do day one i'll show you here what day one is gonna look like and then you can choose like if you like it then you could come and join patreon to get the other days okay so for day one i'm going to letter the word january and i'm gonna use this box okay so for my j it depends on if you want to do a capital j or a lowercase j i'm gonna do a capital j so i'm gonna start right here above the midline and i'm gonna go downstroke and i'm gonna bring it around my tail back to that mid line okay and this was an upstroke so i picked my pen back up then i'm going to do my cross across the top and i did it almost like a down stroke with the pressure okay then i'm gonna do my a your for lowercase letters most of the top of the lowercase letters is gonna hit here on the midline okay so i'm gonna go up stroke down stroke upstroke downstroke upstroke now and then i have my tail here my tail didn't quite hit the a so i'm just going to bring it over to make sure it connects then for my in i'm going to go downstroke upstroke downstroke up with my tail you want to leave that tail so that you have room to connect your next letter so then i'm going to go downstroke up upstroke down stroke tail okay and then i'm going to do for the a i'm going to go up stroke down stroke up stroke and then down stroke tail then i'm going to take this tail straight up into my loop for my r and my loop for my r i'm going to make it go up just above that mid line so i'm going to go up loop and then back to the midline and then you can see that goes to the midline and then i'm gonna go downstroke now this right here is technically a downstroke but i did not press down i just don't really like that to be a thick downstroke but if you wanted it to be a thick downstroke you totally can because it is technically a downstroke okay so then i'm gonna go downstroke up stroke downstroke and i'm gonna add a fun loop now here you can kind of see i kind of messed up the upstroke of the downstroke they don't look connected so i'm just going to take my pen and i'm going to make them look connected and then here this looks a little sloppy just use your pen and you can fill in some of those gaps that look a little rough okay now when you are lettering separate letters like this um it does like look a little bit choppier once you get the hang of it you're gonna be able to do it without picking up your pin between every letter now some words like this one i'm actually still picking up my pen because that's just the way the letters go but like here i can go a straight into my r and then into my y and you can kind of see when i was able to do it without having to walk you through every little letter it looks a little more cohesive i do wish here um so here you'll see my j went down below the bottom line and here i let it sit on the bottom line it's totally up to you which way you do it i like the way this looks better for two reasons one i feel like this looks just really stiff and here i like that this goes down because i think it kind of looks good with the way the y goes down okay so that is how i would brush letter the word january but this lettering challenge is not just about brush lettering so you could also practice writing it a different way so maybe i want to write it in all capital letters so i could just do like down stroke up stroke i'm still doing that idea of pressing down on my down strokes and coming up on my like lighter on my up strokes but i'm doing it with capital letters instead so downstroke and then here i'm going to go a light stroke and then i'm going to cross it now notice that this is where the middle of my words gonna be if i had made the j go all the way to the midline then i would cross my a at that midline because you want to have you want to be you want to be able to draw a line through your letters and have them connect when you write like this so like right now this tip of my j is also where my a is crossed so then i'm gonna go in u down stroke up stroke then i'm going to do another a downstroke light stroke cross now for my r i'm going to do a down stroke and then like i was talking about you want to be able to draw a line through your letter so i'm going to bring my r down to that same point where the a is and then bring it out like that and then for my y i'm going to bring it down to that same point and we talk about this in my lettering class how you can make a word look different just by moving that mid-line so if i wanted to do that again but i wanted it to look different i could just bring the midline up and then here cross it up here they use basic the n and the u are the same not every letter has a midline like that but they look different just by changing that mid line it's like a totally different look so practice when you're doing this lettering challenge it's not just about brush lettering it can also be about writing just in different ways you can also like you don't have to use a brush marker for every single word so maybe i want to grab let me see if this has like i could just grab a regular pen and i could do like my block letters this is another font that i teach in my online lettering course if you haven't taken it yet i really suggest that course but i'm doing the for this i do the box on the left of all the letters if i can jay doesn't have a left here i did mess up you can see here my a's cross up here and this one across down low which i wish i hadn't done that but it's okay okay and then i can come in here and add stripes and that's another fun way to letter january and then maybe i want to try so for for these i was using the um pentel brush sign pen but maybe i want to try it with my tombow pen next and so i'm going to go downstroke upstroke tail upstroke downstroke upstroke downstroke tail down stroke up stroke downstroke tail down stroke up stroke down stroke tail upstroke downstroke upstroke downstroke tail take that straight into my r down stroke down stroke upstroke loop around and then come back over here and cross the j now you can kind of tell this marker writes bigger like it's just right bigger so keep that in mind when you're lettering this is the tombow foodie and this is the pentel brush side pen and then this pen i use is just a paper mate flare so those are just some different ways to letter january okay so that is how i will be teaching these words throughout the month um every day might be a little different like i'm not necessarily going to do brush letter brush letter capital letter capital letter box other pen i may not do that every single day but i'm gonna show you several different ways to letter each word every day so that you get lots of practice on that day and then um i it's gonna be actually like four to five videos a month i think i'm what i'm gonna do because i think one video with 31 words would be a really long video so i think it's actually going to be like one video per week so then you can just watch that week's video and do your lettering that way i think that's what i'm going to end up doing so that's just a little teaser on how i'm going to do it if you're interested in that you need to be a patron to get that perk okay so that is how i plan on using this planner i'm really excited i know some of you are going to ask about the pins the pins i used in this video this is a pentel brush sign pen this is a tombow foodie pen and this is a papermate flair i will link all three of those in the description of the video as well so if you're interested in joining this planner challenge we'd love to have you um be sure to check it out and yeah if you like this video i hope you hit the like button if you want to see more of my videos hit that subscribe button and happy planning you
