[Music] what is going on guys my name is john and welcome back to yet another video it's crazy to think that over six months ago i uploaded the very first professor oak challenge video for pokemon red and blue progressively the challenges have become a lot harder so in the meantime i think it's best to jump around a bit and take on a different game in the series today we're going to find out how easily you can complete professor oak's challenge in pokemon let's go pikachu and evie so starting out i want to mention a couple things i see a lot of comments from you all saying that you really want to try this challenge in any of the games but because of how daunting some of them can be it's really hard to get in the swing of grinding for hours for relatively small results i wanted to take on this challenge because it's pretty obvious that this is going to be the easiest out of the current games available but i also wanted to give a guide that anyone can get into regardless of your skill or endurance when it comes to pokemon i usually say this at the end but i'd highly recommend giving this one a go and i've included the spreadsheet that i made in the description below if you have no idea what a professor challenge is i've included a playlist for the other videos that you can check out in the top right of your screen to better understand what this is all about before we jump right in let's once again go over the simple but very difficult rules the main rule for this challenge is that you have to complete the pokedex as much as you can before each gym pretty straightforward but there's a lot more to it than you think the second rule is that we can only use one copy of the game this eliminates having to worry about limited time events or actions that require another pokemon game this includes stuff like trade evolutions mew meltan and mel metal the final rule is that no glitches can be used i'm pretty sure that there aren't any sorts of glitches in this game but it's still a rule nonetheless with all that out of the way let's just jump right into it for those of you who haven't played the games and assume this video is going to be exactly like red and blue's video you're in for a nice surprise there are a lot of big changes that this game has and as a result many pokemon are in different locations than the original titles i don't want to dive too far into that right now but you'll know what i mean when the time comes per usual we start out with a normal greeting from the man himself and we begin our domination of the region in our home in pallet town when we head out the door and approach route 1 we find professor oak tending to some pidgey and we're immediately greeted with our first version difference because we're going to be playing let's go pikachu a while pikachu appears out of the grass who will soon be our partner pokemon that will carry through the region this obviously means that we can't get eevee but this is only a version exclusive at this point in the game after heading back to the lab the professor gives us the pokedex and we're ready to start becoming the best of the best our first location is going to be route 1 and this is the start to the complete encounter overhaul for these games although there's a lot of inspiration from red blue yellow and the remakes they're a bunch of pokemon that were put in new locations to give less of a feeling that we're playing this generation for the 30 second time on this route we can catch pidgey rattata and oddish bellsprout is a version exclusive for eevee so that entire line won't be available in the game after taking care of a small parcel quests we're pretty much free to do whatever we want until we're forced to take on the first gym if we head west of viridian city we can go to route 22 this is almost identical to red and blue but here we can get spiro nidoran male and nidoran female bringing the total of the seven pokemon our final stop for this section is going to be our largest pass route 2 is viridian forest and we're introduced to a whole bunch of new mechanics this area is where you first start seeing pokemon that range in size which slightly influences how much xp you get after each battle in here we can catch caterpie metapod weedle kokuna and another pikachu for later the most important pokemon that we can get here is part of another new addition to this game on occasion the game will generate a special spawn this pokemon is in most cases the rarest in the area and they can randomly appear throughout your time playing however there is a way that you can manipulate that if you keep catching the same pokemon in a row you can create a catch combo the more you catch the better your odds are to find a special spawn i'm not sure if there's really a guaranteed number that you can get to but in all the time that i put into this game i've almost always found one after a combo of 11. fortunately the special spawn appeared as i was wandering around so with this we can add bulbasaur to the total this gives us a total of 12 pokemon and all the pokemon that we have to catch before the next gym but as many of you know these aren't all the entries that you can get so let's take on the grinding section so unlike the other videos in this series let's go's training style is pretty much the polar opposite of what we're used to rather than fighting wild pokemon we have to catch them to gain experience this is obviously a lot more complicated than just pressing the a button over and over but because of the catch combos the process becomes a lot easier over time before i delve any deeper i want to know that there really isn't a superior place to train oddish is definitely a great option but pokemon like metapod kokuna bulbasaur and even pikachu give out pretty high amounts of experience i chose to hunt oddish on route 2 but there definitely isn't a wrong way to go about grinding but wait a second how can you catch all these pokemon when you only get enough money for like 30 pokeballs and that's a great question higher pitch me but it's actually really simple as you progress through your catch combos you're given candy that you're normally supposed to use to power up the stats of your pokemon each of these sell for 10 and you usually get quite a lot of them as you start to lengthen your combo you'll probably run out of pokeballs a few times at this park but if you somehow screw up at this point you can talk to this woman in pewter city and she'll ask you to watch her slowpoke she'll come back and give you a big pearl which will probably fund the later half of your evolutions if you're not too concerned about burning through your money you can gain a lot more experience by setting up a second player on your game if you throw a pokeball simultaneously you'll receive extra experience for doing it i'm sure some of you might find this cheating in some way but every switch comes with two joy-cons so no one is really unable to do this the final thing to note is that when you get your experience in these games it increases as you build your combo and your whole party receives it it's also not divided between each pokemon so everyone earns the exact same amount this makes it way easier to evolve pokemon but at the same time it makes it extremely hard to determine how long it took to evolve each pokemon so with all this in mind after catching a total of 80 oddish we evolved nidoran female to need arena nidoran male to nidorino kakuna to beedrill metapod into butterfree oddish to gloom rotated eradicate spiro to firo pidgey to pidgeotto pidgeotto pidgeot bulbasaur to ivysaur and finally ivysaur into venusaur this brings a total to 23 pokemon as well as all the pokemon that you can get before the first batch this is only two more pokemon than last time but that'll change pretty quickly now let's take on the gym when we enter the gym we're greeted by the trainer coach and this is once again another new mechanic each gym now requires that we complete a task to enter it and at this one we have to show them a grass-type pokemon after showing him that we have all of them he lets us in to take on our first leader brock his team is centered around rock type pokemon but because of how high level our team is we could probably use anything and still win after receiving the badge we can meet up with blue and the person blocking the east side of the city will allow us to pass this brings us to round three where we can catch sand true and manky before reaching the entrance to mount moon this location also has the version exclusive atkins and eevee so that line will also not be available if you want to make the run a whole lot easier it's important to heal up here but we can also talk to this man and purchase a magikarp for 500 this is the only location where you can find one in this section so it's very important to not forget this one heading into mount moon we can meet team rocket and slowly chase them through the mountain as we catch pokemon this is definitely the largest area in this section as there are a ton of different encounter types that we have to deal with on the first floor i managed to catch geodude and zubat before heading to the lower floors to fight some grunts as you're making your way through it's important to grab at least two moonstones before leaving the area all of them are hidden in select craters in the ground and they respawn daily so if you have trouble finding them you can just wait until the next day and grab the same one on the lowest floor we were able to catch paris and clefairy before meeting the fossil maniac nearing the end of the path after defeating him he lets us choose one of the fossils that he dug up because almost everyone made fun of me for choosing the dome fossil last time we're going to pick the helix fossil instead we're not going to add it to the total until we revive it though right after this we have another encounter with jesse and james and they make the poor choice of battling us after sending them blasting off i spent a little time trying to get the rest of the encounters for this section the special spawn from mount moon is chansey which is also a special spawn for many other locations this definitely has a lot of potential for future grinding sessions so if you're having trouble leveling up this could be a rewarding option the last two pokemon for this location are onyx and clefable each of them have a one percent encounter rate on the bottom floor so they should take a little bit of effort to find a great way to speed up your encounters is to use the latter over and over to reset all the spawns on the floor this avoids the weight of having to sit there and watch the pokemon walk around until they despawn it took quite a while for onyx to appear but in that time frame i managed to encounter three clefable in a row there were two pokemon that spawned at the same time but i honestly have no idea what the odds are for something like that to happen after catching onyx we're set to move to the next area upon exiting the mountain we reach the east side of route 4. here we can catch psyduck and charmander as a special spawn from here we can reach cerulean city which is the area for the next gym leader before we get to grinding and taking that on we can access a couple more important areas if we head north we can fight a rival again and then take on all the members of the nugget bridge route 24 and 25 meet at the end of this event and both of them contain the same pokemon that we need i do recommend searching on route 25 though because you have a complete view of the pokemon that are spawning in the grass we can catch venonat and the special spawn for this area is squirtle which means you can have all three canto starters before you even take on the second gem pretty crazy getting to that level however it does take a decent amount of effort so to make this a lot easier we're going to do a quick little trick to save a lot of time if we replace our party with an extremely weak pokemon and head into battle we'll probably lose really badly because the game warps you to the pokemon center that you last healed at we can move all the way back to the entrance of mount moon this may seem like a waste of time but there are a lot of reasons why this can be helpful once you exit mount moon on the other side you're not supposed to be able to go back until you've progressed a lot farther in the story this can fix issues like if you forgot a pokemon a moonstone or the magikarp in the pokemon center the main reason i did this was to chain clefairy in comparison to the other encounters at this point they seem to give the most experience starting out and they have a relatively solid spawn rate at the start they appear a lot more frequently as you build their chains so over time you can catch clefairy that give out 1 to 3 000 xp per battle chassis definitely give a lot more than that but chaining special spawns especially at this early in the game is pretty difficult to pull off but if you get lucky i'm sure you could get upwards of 5000 doing that after catching a whopping 73 clefairy i was able to take care of the evolutions i needed this made it possible to evolve sandshrew to sandslash magikarp to gyarados geodude to gravler zubat to golbat paris to paris act manky to primape venenata venemoth psyduck to goldoc charmander to charmeleon charmeleon to charizard squirtle the wartortle and wartortle the blastoise the final two pokemon for this section are moonstone evolutions this allows us to evolve need arena to nidoqueen and nidorino to neato king [Music] this brings a total of 51 pokemon that you can get with only one badge but eevee still has one more because of well eevee it's still pretty interesting that although you have way less access to areas than red and blue at this point you can still get up to five more pokemon but now is the fun part let's check out the next section like i said earlier the next gym leader that we have to take on is going to be cerulean city's misty the requirement to get into this gym is to have a pokemon at level 15 so i think we won't have a problem with that after defeating her and collecting the badge we can head back to route 24 and enter bill's cottage once we save him from being a pokemon forever he hands us the tickets to ride on the ssn from here we can head inside the house that was being guarded by officer jenny to progress to the rest of the story this leads to the outskirts of the city and if we head south of here we can go to route 5. on this route we can catch jigglypuff and growlithe and we'll have to come back here later to get a couple more of them the eevee exclusive vulpix is also here which means that nine tails is also not going to be catchable from here we can take the tunnel underground and reach route 6 which has the same encounters but i managed to catch abra bringing the total to 54 pokemon upon reaching vermilion city we're presented with a ton of different directions that we can go before we do any more catching we're going to go ahead and take care of the ssan events although this is a huge ship all that you really have to do is fight your rival so you can get through this in like three minutes if we head into the captain's room we're presented with yet another new feature now in the other games the captain is supposed to give you the hm for cut and this will let you access the vermilion city gym that's blocked off by a tree however in these games the hm feature was replaced with what i'd like to call partner pokemon abilities they all still function the same way you can fly surf illuminate caves the usual stuff the major difference here though is that these techniques aren't locked behind gyms if you thought red and blue was ridiculous oh boy you're in for a treat after watching the ship set sail we head to diglett's cave to catch diglett and doug trio before going to round 11 to get drowsy and mr mime to finish off the catches for this area of the map although it seems like the only thing left to do is take on the gym we still have plenty more things that we can do if we head all the way back to cerulean city and go east we can reach the tree blocking access to route 9. because we're able to pass through here now we can skip the vermilion gym for the time being after completing the events with the grunts and lorelai we can enter rock tunnel where almost every pokemon here is a new encounter because we can't grab the ability to see in dark caves this can be a little difficult to see all the pokemon that you're looking for in here we can catch ryhorn cubone machop and kangaskhan who is a one percent encounter for this area after traversing through the dark we reach the other side of the cave which then leads to lavender town if we go into the pokemon tower we can have another battle with our rival and then get scared off by the ghost when we try to head up because we're blocked off in every other direction we're pretty much forced to head west to route 8. you can access an underground tunnel that will eventually bring us to celadon city in the middle of the city we can meet up with brock who gives us tea that we can give to the guards to make traveling a whole lot easier before we do that though we're going to take on all the events in the game corner this is essentially the same as the originals but there is an additional cutscene and a few battles that make this take a bit longer after defeating archer and giovanni in the basement he gives us the still scope to let us access more of the pokemon tower as we're leaving the building we can talk to this man who will teach pikachu the ability to fly in my opinion this is probably the most bastard thing that you can do with this because you're completely going against the story of the game by being able to access the beginning areas of the map the other side of diglett's cave is blocked off specifically so you defeat lieutenant surge but obviously they didn't consider that someone would take the time to go all the way back to cerulean city from here we can head to the pokemon tower and use our new device to climb to the top of the building after saving mr fuji from team rocket and leaving the building he gives us the pokey flute as a reward if we head back to the tower we can catch gasly and haunter bring the toll the 64 pokemon from here we can bring that tea that we received from brock to one of the guards at the gate and they'll let us pass which lets us access saffron city from all the angles this obviously has another gym but instead we're going to hunt down team rocket again at the silf company this is the largest building in the game and there are a ton of rooms that contain items that sell for a pretty high price if we grab the card key we can head to the 7th floor and talk to this man who will thank us for coming to stop team rocket and give us a lapras these are also a special spawn in some of the water areas but it's obviously much easier to do it this way after defeating giovanni in the basement we progress to celadon city and go west to route 16. if we use the pokey flute on snorlax we can try to catch one this is also a new mechanic as the static encounters in these games have to be defeated before you can catch them this is essentially the raids from pokemon go and this is by far the easiest one out of the bunch you can make this a lot easier by using two players but i felt that it would have made this way too easy after a couple throws we can add snorlax to the total because it was completely blocking this side of the road we can now access the former bike path route 17. on this long strip we can catch ponyta rapidash doduo dodrio and finally three eevee to even out both games at this point i realized i didn't even finish the offense in the self company so i flew back to saffron city to take care of that after heading to the top floor and defeating giovanni again the president of the company will give us a master ball that we'll make good use of later when we exit the building if we go near the pokemon center another man will thank us for clearing out the building and give us his porygon from here we can head all the way back to route 17 which eventually leads to fuchsia city now we can do the most ridiculous thing in this entire challenge if we talk to this man near the pokemon habitats he offers to teach our pikachu how to surf now compared to the previous games this is basically the last location you can reach with only two badges in red and blue but because the techniques aren't locked to the gems we can surf just about everywhere before we add on to all these new locations let's take care of the rest of the land locations if we head east of fuchsia city we can go to route 15. this area and the previous are the only locations where you can catch tauros and scyther but pincer is also available as a version exclusive for the other game to avoid battling all the trainers on this route you can fly back to vermilion city and head east to access the coastline of kanto in the small patch on route 12 we can catch crabby kingler and farfetch before using our new surf technique to capture the rest in the water we can grab horsey sidra tentacool and tentacruel the last two land locations require us to go back to the first few locations in the game on route 6 we can catch goldeen and sea king and all the way back on route 22 we can catch poliwag and poliwhirl which brings us to a whopping 85 pokemon that's even before evolutions but we still have quite a few more new locations to take on if we go back to the rock tunnel area we can head down to the surfing path and catch drattini before going into the power plant to grab a bunch of electrotypes here we can catch voltorb electrode grimer muck magnemite magneton and electamos the last version exclusive exclusives that we can't catch are coughing and wheezing which is probably the lowest amount of unobtainable pokemon out of any game so far the last pokemon that we have to grab here is everyone's favorite electric bird zapdos just like snorlax we have to fight it before we can catch it and although we have a pretty high level team it's still a really tough fight because electrode was a pretty high level i was able to self-destruct to finish it off but catching it is a whole other story if you want to wear the game chooses what you can buy from the shops based on how many badges you have because we only have two we're only allowed to get great balls which aren't exactly the best choice for this kind of pokemon aside from learning their attacking patterns you really have to just chuck balls at it until it catches this is almost entirely based on luck but after going through about 30 great balls i managed to capture it after leaving the power plant i went back to palo town and surf south to route 21. in the water we can catch staryu and in the grass we can have 4 tangler run away from us before we catch it at this point i realized i once again forgot another thing so i flew to pewter city to grab the old amber from the scientists before heading back down the route to cinnabar island if we go into the laboratory another scientist will restore the two fossils that we had earlier this gives us ammonite and aerodactyl our next stop is going to be the pokemon mansion this is actually relevant to the story as we need to grab the secret key so we can enter this island's gym when the time comes if we run around in the basement for a bit we can also catch magmar and ditto which brings us to an even 100 pokemon the last catching location we're going to take on is going to be the seafoam islands if you haven't already you're going to want to get the partner technique for strength in fuchsia city because that will prevent you from getting one more special pokemon this area has a small puzzle that requires you to move boulders around and in my opinion it is way easier than the originals by far as you make your way through you can catch slowpoke slobro seal dugong shelder and jynx after you block off the current you can surf to a small island to catch the next legendary articuno in comparison to zapdos this was insanely easy to defeat i think it would have been much smarter to do this one first but the catching portion took just as long so i guess in the long run it didn't matter too much the final pokemon that we have to grab for this section is going to be all the way over in saffron city dojo after defeating all the members and the karate king he allows us to choose one of the two pokemon behind him i decided to take him on lee but there really isn't a bad option because you probably won't use them anyways now it's time to grind out all of our catches although we've caught more pokemon than the first two sections combined there are actually less pokemon that we have to level up for this section once again there isn't a definite spot to grind but i found that the cinnabar mansion yielded the most xp for more common encounters i chose to make a catch combo for magmar but muck or wheezing depending on your version appear just as frequently if you get the combo going i found that you can get upwards of six to eight thousand experience per battle but most of the time you'll probably get around the three to four thousand range at this point i really got into the rhythm of timing my throws and i really didn't even have to pay a lot of attention to oh oh no well that's going to make things a lot more difficult after chaining 46 magmar i evolved ammonite to omastar cubone to marowak rousey to hypno machop to machoke rhyhorn to rydon aberdekadabra dratini to dragonair and dragon air into dragonite the last pokemon that we need to evolve are the stone evolutions but before i did that i went back to round 6 and caught another for growlithe if you go to vermilion city and talk to this man he'll give us a persian as a reward when it comes to acquiring the evolution stones almost all of them can be purchased at the celadon department store but it's important to grab the final moonstone from the girl in saffron city with all these items gathered we can evolve growlithe to arcanine with the firestone jigglypuff to whaliatoff with the moonstone eevee to vaporeon with the waterstone evie the jolteon with the thunderstone evie deflarion with the firestone poliwhirl the polygraph with the water stone staryu destarmie with the water stone pikachu to ride you with the thunderstone gloom devil plume with the leaf stone and shoulder to cloister with the water stone this brings us to a total of 127 pokemon with only two badges i don't think i've ever broke a game this hard in my entire life this gives us 22 more pokemon than red and blue for this section and at this point we've basically have the entire decks i really don't think they plan for this to happen through regular gameplay but here we are there's still some more pokemon that we have to grab so let's check out the next section at this point the only locations that we're unable to get to are locked behind parts of the story so we have to go take care of that before we can catch anything else after absolutely destroying lieutenant serge erica sabrina and koga we're given a total of six badges if we head back to viridian city and go towards the pokemon league we can go through six of the gates and reach the grass right in front of victory road in this area we can catch execute and with a leaf stone we can evolve into exeggutor this brings us to 129 pokemon which is the most you can have with six badges the next group pokemon requires us to go into victory road so we're going to have to take care of the rest of the gym leaders to progress once we defeat blaine and giovanni for the 14th time we're granted access so we can collect the last two story based pokemon the only spawning pokemon that we need is the other dojo pokemon that we didn't grab both of them are special spawns on different floors and after about two minutes we can add hitmonchan to the total nearing the end of the cave we can take a ladder that will then lead us to the final legendary bird moltrace because rydon completely walls it i was able to knock it out in one hit and it only took a couple minutes to catch now that we've caught everything for now it's time to take on the indigo plateau if you've seen any other challenges i've done in this series this is oddly enough a roadblock for most games as most of your pokemon that you caught are only at the level that they evolve and very few pokemon actually evolve near the levels that the leaders use here fortunately enough because our team levels up all at the same time i managed to get a couple pokemon to level 60 while i was training dragonite once we cleared through lorelei bruno agatha lance and then our rival we're all done with the main story would you be surprised if i said there were more pokemon in the post game let's check out the next section upon defeating the indigo plateau we unlock a few new things right when we leave our house we now have the ability to fly high over cities and routes but the big addition that we're looking for is the ability to enter the cerulean cave in comparison to the other gen 1 titles this area is a lot less complicated to traverse through and thankfully there aren't too many new pokemon to collect if we go to the top floor we can walk around and pick up items from these glowing spots in the center room there's a giant crystal that we can interact with the item is random every time that you start the game but if you keep restarting you'll eventually find the other fossil that you didn't pick up in mount moon during this process i also managed to catch a liquid tongue on this floor if you bring the dome fossil to the scientist he'll give us kabuto because they only require one level to evolve i used a rare candy to turn it into kabutops now it's time to take on our greatest challenge if we follow the path to the lowest floor of the cave and surf on the water we'll eventually reach the platform to mewtwo being that it's stronger than literally every other pokemon i've collected at this point this was a pretty tough battle to plan out after a few attempts i ended up using my hypno to tank all the psychics until he ran out and then i switched to rydon to finish him off because you only have five minutes to finish and it knows recover odds are you're gonna be there for a bit once you get around to the catching part you're probably going to have a rough time if you wasted your master ball like i did obviously ultra balls are a big help but i'd also suggest trying to get as many raspberries as you can because they can definitely no way it happened again i literally can't script this kind of stuff i was tackling in my office for a solid five minutes when this happened but this was literally the perfect end to this challenge with this we've caught a total of 135 pokemon and have successfully completed professor oak's challenge for let's go pikachu and evie but how did i do so let's review as i said in the beginning of the video this challenge wasn't really intended to be difficult in any way i really wanted to do this because i think that a lot of you assume that the professor of challenge requires weeks of grinding to get even the smallest sections of the game done and while that may be true for a lot of them i feel like this is the perfect game to get into this challenge it really should only take you a week and most to finish if you play a little bit every day and on top of that you can show off to your friends who caught almost every pokemon in the region with only two badges after catching mewtwo i finished with a time of 15 hours and 53 minutes i did this as a super leisurely run in the later half of the game so if you are really as focused as you can be even the most average player could do this in 10 to 12 hours even though we caught all the pokemon in one copy of the game there are still 18 pokemon that aren't available these are the version exclusives the trade evolutions and the three mythicals in the game overall a pretty small selection of pokemon and they're all relatively easy to trade for i really suggest taking on the challenge for this game because i personally feel like it gives a lot more life to this side of the series if you're anything like me this is the first time i've picked up let's go in months and i had an absolute blast for doing this together once again if you're interested on taking the challenge i've included a link to the professor oak subreddit as well as a spreadsheet that i put together to give you a rough outline of what you need to catch if you do complete it tweet it out and tag me at johnstoneyt other than that that's all there is to say about the professor oak challenge and pokemon let's go pikachu and eevee and that's gonna do it for today's video if you liked the video leave a like and consider subscribing as i'll be uploading more content like this very soon if you have any other suggestions for videos that you'd like to see leave a comment below follow me on twitter to keep updated with new videos as they come out other than that like thank you all for watching and i'll catch you on the next one
