okay this is keith with how to build our own home we are at a major remodel here this is a kind of a two-story rambler of the basement with an upstairs i've shown this on from previous videos i talked about cutting out for a exterior entrance here we've done that now i have my concrete cutters come and they've cut that out now i've talked about this a couple times this is a great way to create an external entrance for a living space down below and we had a window here previously so we just cut out the exact dimensions of the window and we cut down and we cut out we didn't cut beyond that because i didn't want to affect the structural integrity of the foundation i've got rebar in there and a rebar up above for a bond beam so i didn't want to destroy that if i did i'd have some major reconstruction some major engineering to deal with i didn't want to do that so it's wider than a door which makes it nice because now we can just frame it in and have some trim on the outside trim on the inside so that's done we've got the cut concrete cut out for the trench it's kind of a mess in here right now they just left and we're gonna have a kitchen over there or and we're i've had it cut right through the footing there and we're going to take our sewer out that way for additional growth beyond because we've got a huge backyard it's a great way to tap into that and get it done now so we're just going to take that out have a clean out upstairs but what i want to talk about today is is bathrooms in a lot of old homes especially those homes built in the 70s and the aeds and whatnot they had really really really tiny bathrooms and the problem with tiny bathrooms is you've got a bathtub and more than likely they leak even if it's a shower they'll leak outside of the living space into the bathroom and you have a lot of rot and a lot of damage in the substrate of that bathroom we've actually replaced all of our subfloor up above so what i'm doing with all of these bathrooms and i'll show you upstairs we're enlarging them so we actually this here was the wall that came out for that bathroom we're coming out two feet past this here section over here and we're going to have a walk-in shower back there and it's going to be a big walk-in shower and it's going to be recessed in the concrete what's the plus of that well if if you've got some people in here staying here and they're not very good with putting the shower curtain in the shower it's not going to damage anything because it's so big and i'll show you upstairs the shower space is so big that i'm not going to splash outside and it's going to be a recess shower so it's naturally going to flow right into the drain let's take you upstairs and show you what i'm talking about how you can actually create more space for a shower which is my best place for creating square footage in a home especially a valued square footage when people walk into i go wow this is nice it's a nice feature you can do on remodels to really make them last and i'm going to show you why let's go upstairs okay we're upstairs and i'm actually enlarging both bathrooms upstairs the other bathroom actually stopped right about here and went across and so i had a toilet here and i had the tub right here it was really confining and there was a lot of rot damage down below so we repaired all our substrate put in a new subfloor and then we extended it the the bathroom here out into the living room a good foot and a half and this is going to create for a large shower a step and shower and the thing i like about that is imagine the bib right here for the water coming out i've got all this room where i'm not going to have that much of a risk creating a damage and water damage outside in here in the bathroom so i'm not a fan of tubs i'm more of a fan of showers especially with a home like this where there might be a lot of use on that so that what we've done you come outside in the living room and see how we've done that okay we've extended that bathroom out into the main living area just two feet that didn't take up too much room in here but it's going to create a lot of functional space inside that bathroom let's go take a look at another bathroom inside the other bedroom okay we're in this bathroom this is considered really the master bedroom and we're actually enlarging this bathroom again a foot and a half it's about a foot and a half out and we're going to create another larger walk-in shower here on this one we're cutting out the base so we can actually have some backing so we can have our bladder system come up and have a nice and a complete shower system but again that's a great feature a great way great to add space where it's typically no space and it's really hard to to really uh enjoy the bathroom and it's not very functional sometimes but just taking a foot and a half you really do a lot for a bathroom this is not really encroaching on this bedroom uh a lot it's really going to be a great feature we'll do some before and afters some continual processes but i'm going to have to redo a lot of electrical i was planning on that but it's just as a way to make something nice that could actually be a really great place for people to live i'll give you some more posts on this this is a fun one this is the rough part it's actually my favorite part because we're actually reconfiguring things and redesigning things making things work rather than just i've seen so many remodels especially rental remodels where they just come in and they don't care they just slap some of the cheapest stuff on there and they throw people on there and then it's destroyed in just a matter of months literally because it was poorly done so we're going to do this right really make this a functional place a great place for you know multi-family yeah you know a multi-generational family situation which is really where i think there's a market's going boomer generation is getting older people are going to need to have their mom and dad live with them this is a great way to do that this is what i'm designing this home for reconfiguring this home for this is keith kelsey give you a post on a remodel job here in downtown st george you guys take care you
