we're back at Olympic Stadium with the 4 by 100 relays for women and Allyson Felix stepping off her marks and putting her tape down she'll be running the second leg for the US so in the four by one in the heats you know typically uneventful just want to get the baton around you know without any incident and that was far from what happened as they're set on their way and Barletta running the first leg for the u.s. she'll hand off to Allyson Felix she's already making up the stagger to her outside the pass successful - Allyson Felix and down the backstretch they go so Felix now to English gardener and they've dropped the stick dropped it the United States is out I just remember you know getting the baton and you know running in and having a smooth leg and when it went time to hand off filling contact from the runner outside of me and just kind of being thrown off by that it was just kind of my worst nightmare realized I mean I remember the baton leaving my hand and not connecting with her and kind of just being like not knowing what to think I don't recall like actually what was said to each other I just remember like getting it in her hands and telling her to go the thought that I had we had to get the batana you know if there's gonna be any type of review or appeal or anything we got to get this baton around they were finishing after dropping the stick so for the second time Tom in three Olympic Games the United States does not get out of the opening round even when we went to the mixed zone you know right away you only have I think it's 30 minutes to make an appeal and I remember you know frantically trying to get word you know to our team officials that we need to fill this like I was hit while I was running and here it is again and the Brazilian runner does come in to the US Lane and does impede Allyson Felix we'll see what happens to the protest we left the track not knowing what was going to happen you know kind of it was all we weren't sure but they told us to be ready to run if we needed to and so then we got word that we were back in but we needed to come out and to run by ourselves and to qualify on time so here we go protest upheld all lanes empty except lane - I remember stepping to that stadium it was just a weird kind of energy and feeling you know no one was there was no one else on the track and at the same time I felt like it was even more pressure you know to get it right because there's no excuse you know for this not to go well so Gianna Bartolotta running the leadoff leg for the US this looks a lot like this morning no holding back from the US first leg here's the pass it was the most bizarre thing to run alone because you know you're running in a relay and you really run off of people you know it's really hard to run fast by yourself it is essentially like practice you know we've done this a bunch of times we just need to get it around safely safely Mae there and now a Kennison the anchor awaits the baton all of that adversity you know motivated us as well so we went out there good exchanges and 342 point six nine or better and they're in so look at the relief on ik innocence pay and you imagine all of them the relief they're feeling and getting ready to be introduced in the final of the women's 4x1 and the US will be in it's after that incident yesterday so I got to the point of when we're warming up when it's time to spike up and to put on shoes and I saw English gardener kind of looking around looking rummaging through her bag and I saw you know some little commotion happening over there and then it became clear that she didn't have her shoes she didn't have her spikes and me and English gardener do not wear the same size shoe at all you know I always come with multiple pairs of spikes just in case and so I offered them to her I think she laced him up really tight and somehow she made them work it took an extra round to get here but the United States is here back with a chance to defend their title so stepping out into that final race having faced all that adversity I think it really brought the group of women closer together I think we're really dialed in we're really focused even though we had qualified with the fastest time we were in lane one typically the fastest runners are going to be in the middle of the track and so at lane one it puts you out of touch with those runners and you really want to feel that speed because you want to be able to run off of it so even though the distance is the same it tends to feel like a disadvantage because of where you are in the tightness of the turns of the track if it was just another thing kind of stacked against us so I think that was just like the final thing like okay we can still do this you know it's things have been stacked against us throughout like let's go in and let's finish this thing sir and there's the starts barter letter running the first leg for the United States Williams for Jamaica here's the first baton pass I think I've in the four by one I've typically been on the second leg it's the longest leg and you can really stretch out and I have really long legs I have a long stride and I think we try to use my strength to kind of you know take advantage of that to have me run that that really long leg and here is the US with the lead we were able to go out there and have clean exchanges and get it done Tory Bowie has a big lead here they come for the pennies it's gonna be the u.s. Jamaica second with the second fastest time ever run the United States from lane one get the job done and retain their Olympic brow [Music] you
