because we are the voices of fullerton college sports here on sportsnet usa.net corey nalen this is a game of old school versus new school i would look at it we're going to run a power eye a maryland eye pro set formation maybe against a brian crooks defense that if they lose the line of scrimmage fullerton's going to go back-to-back losses here at chapel stadium yeah this is not your normal look that fullerton has seen i'd say in the past i don't know 10 years since last time they saw alan hancock college the defense for allen hat for fullerton must be decisive their linebackers must be true to form and be aggressive because they're going to run the ball the bulldogs and run the ball and run the ball some more so they need to be decisive on offense like you said let's see if they run the ball and establish that ground game because they need a big play yeah and and we think all of us here on the air that the run is going to allow whomever is quarterback an opportunity deep kick into the end zone taken right there for an automatic touchdown so it'll be first down and 10 for the hornets at the 25. welcome to another exciting community college football game and we can tell you from the coach's show from wandering out to the field ron osborne and myself ryan osborne there are a lot of unhappy coaches when we went to practice this week a lot of unhappy coaches but if you want to look at today's game and find yourself an x factor i got to go with coach phil austin squad the defensive backs why you ask because he said one big key thing defensively will be the defensive backs and making sure that they don't get low to sleep by the type of offense that alan hancock has alan hancock as you guys mentioned consistently runs it up the middle so the defensive backs have to stay alert at all times just in case they send someone back that's in single coverage chandler galban in at quarterback brandon rankins there galban looks back throws it over at the pat kashan griffin gets it takes it at the 30. they're going to give him a gain of 10 on the play it's an automatic first down up front for the hornets nathan ramirez the center marcelo signs is your right guard daniel madelis is the right tackle edward barajas contreras is the left guard and nick sia tanu is the left tackle koi thomas to the low side of the field because shawn davis goes in motion from left to right cal band goes to david throws it out in the flat and that's griffin i gave him the wrong last name because shawn griffin gets it i don't know why i thought he looked like a davis to me running over there and this is a variation of a run game two quick outs get on the corner short patterns get your quarterback some rhythm gain of four on the play it's going to bring up a second down and six galban pump fakes now goes down the middle of field looking at a fly pattern there goes up simultaneous catch that means it goes to the offense and it is an automatic first down right at the 22. so when the defense and the offense catch the ball at the same time they go down in the ground at the same time possession is retained on the offensive end and corey basically that short passing play which who says the running play actually allowed galban to have time to throw the football yeah and that's chris coons who makes his seventh catch of the season and he was going up against jacquez mcwilliams six foot 185 out of norcross georgia again good play good throw by galvin very good catch by coons thomas and henderson over to the near side of the field galban's still in a quarterback first down and 10 right at the 19 brandon rankins now goes to the left side of the formation they hand it off the rankings goes to the far end turns at the 20 and gets taken down they're on a really nice tackle by the linebacker makes the stop he's joined by jacquez mick williams antonio fisher vic garns ronald fusiller and cyree lewis in the backfield john sniffin up front with latrell brown jesse garza byers to the far side of the field for the hornets second down and 11 for the hornets galban changes the play comes back gets in formation sets everybody there they run it off to rank it straight up the middle and corey that's a play that you'd like to see them run much more this season and what it does it gives the offensive line some rhythm and some confidence as well that we can run the ball against anybody justice machiani as well hyrum akanelia and andrew laritzen first and goal hands it off to rankin again stays on his feet touchdown fullerton college so back-to-back runs by brandon rankins and corey you talked about it last week he touched the ball maybe 12 times in that first half you and i thought he had at least over five and a half yards of carry every time he touched it he just shows it there give me the ball i can score a touchdown for you yeah he's averaging 4.6 on the season every time he touches it and he's a touchdown machine already that's five already this season so with 13 14 to go here in the first quarter the hornets take that ball and march down the field as the point is good it's fullerton seven alan hancock zero here on sportsnet need bonus points to win this football game honestly after the way they played last week yeah that was not a good game last week and give credit to college of the canyons they did play a good game last week but that's the drive fullerton needed on offense two short passes to start off and you get a first down to kashan griffin kashan griffin is a playmaker then you throw it deep to chris coons because you had time because of those short passes and he waited the offensive line was very very good on that possession because galban clean pocket rankings to finish out the drive 15 yards in the last two carries and that touchdown established a run so fullerton let's see if they start this way on the defensive side of the ball cyree lewis is back deep for the bulldogs so lewis is back deep sniffing oh it was cindy jeffries that took it was a defensive back for this team so now it's the bulldogs team and this is a team that we say loves to run a power formation as they come on the field ezekiel store is the quarterback 511 maurice smith the running back an all cif running back all league running back i formation power formation straight up the middle to the outside hit at the line of scrimmage and about a yard gain on that cory yeah and that's a good job by troy mcdonald on the outside held his position on that left-hand spot goes straight up the hip field and makes to play benito rivas dylan fonseca juan chase richards micah pacheco pacheco excuse me and max steinman are the offensive lineman for the bulldogs mike mccoy to the near side of the field the up back kishan pua goes back throws it quickly out in the flat and then when you get it out there you get it to show leo walker who gets a gain of four on the play yeah against cerritos he had an outstanding one-handed grab on the nearest on the sideline as one of the best catches all year in college football so it's going to bring up a third down and a long six right at the 46 yard line mike mccoy comes in near side of the field jaleel walker comes with him up back is pua in the i formation third down and six here comes the pressure puts it on the defense is there and the defense smothers store corey and this is something we didn't see last week yeah the linebackers look quick on that one then they run jalen early gets the sack and that's the way the defense wanted to start three and out if i'm not mistaking corey mark correct me if i'm wrong is that the first isn't that the first time fullerton gets a sack in the first half this year it is it is desean griffin back deep for the hormones he'll stand at the 18. here comes the rush griffin backs up back pedals he takes it at the five back pedals to the three as the near side of the field looks for a block he's at the 20 turns up field gets to the 28 and then there's all blue and white waiting for him right there nice return from where he started 11 minutes exactly to go here in the first quarter the hornets are up by seven and that was a 55-yard kick a little bit more than 55 yards but again an excellent return by kashan griffin chandler galban comes back out at quarterback brandon rankins in the backfield with him charles byers goes to the far side of the field one of the best hands on this receiving group for the hornets is buyers throw anything near him it's close rankings goes in motion from left to right they come back to the other side of field look for jordan smith smith gets it stays on his feet turns across the 35 gonna mark him down at the 37. so smith catches that one six foot tall 188 pounds out of louisiana brought down by mick williams coy thomas now comes to the near side of the field had that big catch the last drive they're out here galban empty backfield looks has time middle of the field goes right there and once again he goes to koi thomas who breaks the tackle and gets all the way down to the 20-yard line so koi thomas has been the one right now what flag on the field it's going to be holding against the hornets so we're going to move it back and so that pass play is negated and thomas did a nice job of that it was a corner route and goblin had enough time to throw and you realize why he just had enough time to throw and that's because well there was a hole so that's going to move it back to the 26 with 10 14 to go here in the first quarter and the hornets up by seven deshawn griffin now comes to the near side of the field he'll be in the slot to the near side of the field they show it kashan gets it gets hit by one shreds that tackle they take him down at the 32 so he picks up about six and a half yards on that play and it looks like they make a concerted effort to get the ball short quick throws and when they can get the ball down the field but the important thing is to get galbo under rhythm which he didn't have last week against canyons masak and burden come into the game they'll line up on the far side of the field third down and seven for the hornets galban looks in galban has time here comes the pressure tries to get away from it dives across the 40 they're going to give him a yard on the play it'll bring up a second down and nine that's good downfield coverage by the bulldogs again mcwilliams is a safety he's going to get a lot of action one of the team's best defensive players and one of the better sure tacklers on the team he's averaging four tackles a game mccray and buyers now at the far side of the field huffman on the near side of the field as they shuffle in their receivers galban looks it over hands it off turn the corner nice little run play taken there by devin moore devin moore oh that isn't devin moore that's ryan black and ryan black stays on his feet and it'll be touchdown for the hornets and that's a great quick fly sweep you know not even a fly sweep because he's a running back but again an end around from the back ryan black comes around basically a sweet play to the left side they seal on that left side sia tanuhu and barajas contreras sealed that life left side gets one downfield blocked by your receiver buyers and he was off to the races to score six so the hornets with 804 to go here in the first quarter take a quick lead against the bulldogs ball of spotted kick is up and the kick is good cory i'm gonna go back because again i i i thought it was there was two running backs but also now they're letting everybody touch the football on this offense and it paid off on that play and that's what you heard you and ryan were at practice this week that's what you heard there's going to be some changes in this game we come to the game today there's going to be things you haven't seen or plays you haven't seen in this game and we've seen them ryan black his first carry of the game of the season not the game but the season and he goes 55 yards for a touchdown and ryan you were out there and you listen to brian crooks and of course phil austin who basically we've known for many years sort of say everybody wasn't satisfied with what this hornet team has done so far that's exactly what was mirrored to us throughout the entire week they said you know what not only were we not satisfied after the game was done but in the film room when they went back they reviewed hours and hours and hours of film they said from top to bottom the entire team needed a makeover that they were able to fine-tune some things going into this week's practice cyree lewis back deep back there with him is bj jordan lewis comes up once again the ball does not reach louis lewis looks to talk that the up man can do something and that's sidney jeffries back-to-back times corey has handled the ball maybe cyrene needs to step up a couple of feet to maybe take one of these kickoffs back and that's when they kick it to the opposite side siree lewis is a dangerous guy back there mark you don't want to give him too many chances on the returns three returns already 58 yards on the season his long was 21. mccoy comes on near side of the field jaleel walker goes to the far side of the field again i formation store at quarterback pool of the up back once again they try to go off tackle and the defensive line is cluttering up the middle of the field right now for the hornets yeah and we'll set that defense in just a moment you got troy mcdonald left to right we've also got bryce dunnick jordan rice and elijah summer niegel mott are you starting defensive lineman for the hornets eriksen now as the deep back in the eye formation koi stays the near side they fake it pua comes out of the backfield they give it to the big fullback who gets across the 25 down about the 28-yard line nice job with the play action get positive yardage which you need against this fullerton team that just come out in quick 14 points isaac her title number 27 you see there in gray jalen early the middle backer and it's gil vasquez no that's um junior wiley the other back excuse me third down and five quick throwing over in the flat easy to jalil walker who walks straight up the field and you love the way this young man runs when he catches the ball corey he knows where the stick is at and he gets where he needs to go as a bulldog to get a first down yeah he's not a small man out there 6-3 195 cesar chavez high school in arizona and his other wide receiver mate mike mccoy he also had a one-handed catch last week against cerritos and it's also one of the best players of the year so mccoy comes in near side of the field stacked wicca is walker tight formation on the far side of the field is the up back storex quarterback first down and 10 for the bulldogs at the 35 store goes back look here's comes the pressure throws the middle of the field goes to mccoy mccoy goes up gets it drops the football and let's see if they call that a turnover it is and the hornets come away and my two partners basically said there'll be two turnovers in this game ryan osborne set a fumble on one so that's the first turnover you call it ryan you said there'd be at least one in this game for the bulldogs and it looked like it was right who comes in right at the end he not only goes for the tackle but he realizes that the receiver once he gets it is stuck looking up field he doesn't take a look at where all the defenders are behind him so he punches it out from behind yeah and if he had a replay that plays should not have happened actually because o'shea davis got got away with the blatant hold of mike mccoy before he caught the ball but again let's see if the hornets can make this turnover into something positive trey edwards now in at quarterback for the hornets first down and 10 at the 49. edwards goes back nobody's open edwards decides to do what cory neal and said do young man if there's nothing there take off running and make them catch you from behind first down hornets yeah act don't react and that's what trey edwards does in his first possession our first carry first throw first play of the ball game so it moves the sticks here with five 23 to go in the first quarter the hornet's up by 14. and mark chandler-brown has already got one interception and now one fumble recovery on the season brandon rankins in the back bill with trey edwards sean griffin in the slot they throw it over the flap taken over there gain of about five as koontz once again catches it moves it up the field they're gonna give him a gain of seven on the play that's his second catch of the game and he's a nice wide receiver on the outside six feet out of la habra high school pedigree la habra highlanders one of the better football programs in southern california thomas and griffin to the near side of the field they hand it off to brandon rankins he sorta well maybe groundhogs his way to the first down goes down low gets underneath those big defensive linemen we'll see if they give him the first down and they do athletic big running back for the hornets yeah prolific running back coming out of aquinas high school in san bernardino all kinds of records first down at 10 at the 25. tre edwards looks things over hornets offense is clicking well if you can't stop him let him keep running brandon rankins gets hit high cory neal and should go down but then has enough balance to stay on his feet and get a tight gain of three on the play yeah when he left high school as a senior he was the all all county or all-time county leading rusher in history since then that's been broken buyers over here to the near side of the field love that young man as a receiver tr edwards rolls out the direction nobody's gonna pick him up and trey cuts back has nothing but touchdown in front of him and the hornets are on the board again okay i'm gonna go directly to you because we talked a lot about losing last week and you said what trey did when he got in there was hesitant when the hole opened today he has been very reactive when the defense has given him something yeah and i wouldn't say reactive he's been active he's been the protagonist in that he's been making these happen because there was no hesitation that was a design rollout that was another one read not there you take off and it helps when you have brandon rankin leading the way and taking out the linebacker so you can run free so trey edwards gets in the end zone the kick is up and the kick is good with 3 47 to go it's the hornets 21 the bulldog zero here on sportsnet usa.net well ryan osborne i got to get your two cents in we've been in our practice frustration from college of the canyons you look at just the first quarter so i'm going to ask you you've been around for nine years here at fullerton what's the difference from last week to this week well i think it kind of goes back to what corey was talking about the decisiveness it's added to that you look at these guys it's seeing them walk up to the line of scrimmage without kind of turning their heads saying oh am i going to have to worry about this guy am i going to have to worry about that linebacker coming off the left side instead you're looking at both quarterbacks walking up to the line of scrimmage saying hey this is the game plan if it works it works if it doesn't it doesn't we move on we turn the page last week against college of the canyons you saw them kind of pick up their heads just a little bit trying to see what that rush is going to look like over anticipating where that point of attack was going to be booming kick we'll see once again the up back corey who's you wonder about the position out there for the bulldogs has been the receiver you would think you would move the young man up just a little i know you said you'd kick away from him but whatever you're doing right now you're not getting the ball back to your best receiver there on the kickoff yeah you got to find a way to get it to siree lewis and this is the perfect situation that fullerton has countered or come up with in this first quarter as jordan wright chandler brown jonathan smith and on the far side o'shea davis round out the starting lineup on the defensive side of the ball for the hornets mccoy and walker go to the far side of the field store still at quarterback pua now goes a little from right to left straight dive play up the middle trying to do what they do best run the football and they get a gain of four on the play yeah mcdonald's there as well as a host of hornets jonathan smith comes up from a safety position and in the middle i believe that's sean morris and makai smith now in the in the ball game for dunnick and mott erickson comes in at running back pull the up back erickson the deep back second down and five right at the 30 store at quarterback straight dive play they hand it to erickson gets hit in the backfield stays on his feet struggles and gets to the 32 when they call him down and pavel sloboda is the right in for the hornets out of silver spring maryland wheaton high school his first action of a different quarterback from last week to today yes i knew that was your answer but no he no he is because he's a quarterback that what we saw in practice in preseason he was in there with purpose okay with with good technique at their quarterback position and not being somebody who's waffling second down hands it off to black who had the big run for over 50 yards gets back maybe he's going to lose a half a yard on that one it's going to bring up a third down vic garns in on the second consecutive tackle along with jesse garza jordan smith to the near side of the field in the slot next to him is going to be christopher koontz now they go to the far side of the field so they flip-flop desean griffin now comes in this slot to the near side of the field and standing next to him is going to be coy thomas trey edwards at quarterback ryan black is running back third down in the yard trey goes back throws it over here underneath route to griffin and griffin refuses to go down stays on his feet they will mark him out at the 49-yard line corey that's just run the defender out with the first receiver take the second receiver and come in behind it and what it is is it's an offensive coordinator and a head coach giving his quarterback an opportunity to get the ball out of their hands quickly and not have these elongated pass plays to start off a ball game where you can't get control of the offense they've got control of the offense right here first down and 10 at the 49. brandon rankins now comes in at running back edwards goes back throws a delayed screen taken easily by there by jordan smith jordan smith refuses to go down stays on his feet across the 45 tough little receiver with smith yeah you see more fight out of these fuliken college offensive players than you have had in the first four well three games on the field that you've played thus far gain of seven second down and three right at the 44 yard line trey edwards brandon rankins in the backfield second allows fullerton what we've seen in fullerton the last five years that you've had two and sometimes three quarterbacks involved in an offensive system each one does it something a little bit different and trey edwards is one of those guys who does the running and passing part of the game rankin steps up a little nearest out of the field koi thomas deshawn griffin in the slot next to him second down and three right at the 29. trey goes back looks over goes to drop that money beautiful defense by the bulldogs cory because if you throw a perfect pass it's a touchdown if you play perfect defense it's knocked down and that's what jacquez mcwilliams did play perfect defense read the receiver's eyes that's christopher coons as soon as he saw his eyes that get big stuck out that left hand and knocked it away his third pass breakup of the season byers goes to the far side of the field with mike mccray near side of the field huffman who had a good game last week for this hornet football team third down here come the bulldogs they're after trey trey tries to get through the crowd we're gonna get a flag and normally where that flag lands is holding against someone and loto on the tackle so it's holding against the hornets and it looks like they're going to move them back we'll see was the person on the stop they're gonna back them up so instead of fourth and three you think footage would have gone for that you back them up to third down and 13. makes it a little bit more difficult and trey edwards a little bit reminds you of a little dr jackson back from that 2016 team backing up jordan hoy yeah he does he does i mean and his feet are quick and swift trey goes back middle opens up trey says i've got a long way to run cory nealon and he does and it can corey's just if you could be in the booth with us right now cory neal and is smiling because we talk forward to college sports all week long and cory you have said if this young man never hesitates and there's an opening quarterback so blackney under center i formation for the hornets brandon rankins takes it straight up the middle shreds a tackle stays on his feet they're going to get him down at the 14. high school in anaheim california ryan black is the up back brandon rankin's the deep back they hand it off to rankin little high handoff rankin's holds on to it it's gonna bring up a third down and one and the thing that you've been told ryan osborne this is the only quarterback that can crawl up behind that center and say i'm in love with you hiking me the football and when you look at blackney it's his quickness off the line that allows him to get to those opportunities brandon rankins gets hit behind the line of scrimmage corey nealen he should have lost a yard but because of his feet he gets a first down for the hornet yeah good feet good stature adrian stevenson was there but he was off his feet to make the tackle so he wasn't able to wrap up on rankins first and goal for the hornets at the nine trey edwards comes back in the game at quarterback blackney does his job and runs the football and the offense for the hornets they run a trick play up the middle and corey nealon i'm gonna let you call that trick play because basically what you do is you have trey edwards back there the ball goes to the up back and that was sia [Music] sia tanu was there he might be the best offensive did i miss it ooh okay he might be the best offensive player mark that fullerton has blackney comes back in second ago hands it off to brandon rankin puts down his shoulder puts down his head falls forward and they're gonna take brandon let's see they're gonna take that all the way down and rankin's gets to the four it'll be third and goal at the four with 11 48 to go here in the first half they it makes him go to the outside to stretch allows his defensive compadres to come up and make a tackle so caesar who's been good as a field goal kicker this year and we get we've gotten very accustomed didn't give them that level of pressure hey we have to get it into the end zone because they knew you know what we just have to get it to a certain spot ty's got it from there if you're fullerton college knowing that you have someone who can boot you a field goal when you really need it and you get some yardage it takes pressure off your offense knowing that hey if we're not able to get it into the end zone at least we know we can put points on the board big kick back pedaling is loose has to go down on his knees that time for a touch back so velasquez guys is now two for three on the season so the hornets with 10 55 to go it's 24-0 for the bulldogs and cory now this is a running football team do you stay with what you've got you're down by 24 or do you need to start opening it up if you're the bulldog team you got to keep doing what you're doing run the ball but you are going to have to get there mcwilliams or excuse me get walker and mccoy involved in the ball game because they are two outstanding receivers store under center tries to dive play again closes the middle up very much and the hornets front have been excellent tacklers in this game yeah and it's hard to catch up with an offense such as this a lot of those back in the day a lot of those big 18's but this team kind of reminds you of college of san mateo where they have two good receivers a good running back and a pretty good quarterback and an offensive line who moves the ball but again if they get behind which brian quick told us that's where we want him store in a shotgun christensen standing back next to him pua comes up the line of scrimmage looking for the block they get it going down mccoy fighting hand checking ball knocked out of bounds very nice coverage against mccoy o'shea davis who got the start today making the most of his his first pass breakup of the season he and jordan right smack hands on the right side the near side of the field jonathan smith still in there with chandler brown zach brogden is your middle backer marcellus gaines is another backer and we can set the rest of that defense in just a moment walker to the far side of the field mccoy to the near side of the looks for mccoy mccoy just gets in front of the defender beats him on the play a flag comes out at the 49-yard line we'll see what the flag was but i thought it was an excellent offensive route by mccoy yeah he's an excellent receiver out there on him he's not a small guy 511 195 but he's very strong so he makes that cut in front of o'shea davis so shea davis was up and again it was to hold on o'shea davis again because mccoy does a three three step in route so it's a short skinny post and he's in there and gets an inside position boxing out like a basketball player mark and makes the catch as we come to the end of the first half it's the hornets 24 the bulldog 7 here on sportsnet usa dotnet it's been an interesting season so far for these hornets and it's my pleasure always at halftime to have the host of the coach's show and one of the producers standing next to me ryan osborne ryan osborne it's been an interesting season for the hornets if things go well for them they could be three in one and back in the mix and when we say back in the mix well if you look at the rankings today you and i were talking earlier before we came on the air one ranking the hornets are high other ranking hornets burlow allen hancock above the hornets below the hornets ah i'm not sure where anybody belongs so let's look at those rankings and this football season so far yeah and mark when you start things off we'll start off by looking at alan hancock and fullerton you were talking about different rankings and how each side each publication each authority on the level of community college decides where each team is going to go they rank them very differently why you ask well because the cccsia football poll in the state of california that's all the sports information directors who end up voting on that they have fullerton ranked at number 12 while alan hancock is ranked at number nine when you look at the overall national rankings out of state out of state rankings have fullerton above alan hancock in the top 10 because they lost to a top 15 quality opponent last week in canyons but alan hancock is sitting outside the top 12. so both of those two teams kind of trading places with one another depending on which publication you end up looking at again the state of california sports information poll says that they are ranked number nine for alan hancock and number 12 for fullerton when you look at the coaches poll however fullerton is sitting at eight with alan hancock at number 11. so out of state mark the coaches in state both ranked fullerton higher due to strength of schedule who they've already played and who they are going to play and then alan hancock is below them but the sports information directors end up ranking fullerton much lower and ryan when you look at the top five i think it's sort of interesting in either poll that you look at because riverside's unanimous in both both as the number one team in the nation right now but then you look at college of san mateo in the one poll is ranked at number two then you look over on them on another poll they're ranked at number three san francisco is sitting there at number four so they don't move in either pole ventura is to me the biggest mind blower because they're two in one pole but then they drop the four in another pole and then it's sort of consistent as you go down the poles but a little little in the top five it's a hiccup on who's actually number one and what you're seeing with riverside city college getting that number one spot now for the most part through the first three weeks of the season they were ranked number two in the polls right behind college of san mateo however it's about how well both teams have won colleges san mateo last week had a quality opponent just got past them by one score on the other side for riverside city college they have blown out each of their first three teams that they have placed in or played including long beach city who was ranked in the top 15 at the time that they played them so everyone in the state of california boosting up riverside city college because they played a quality opponent and had a quality win in fact if i remember correctly they put up over 50 points over top of long beach city college at the time when you look at the rest of the top five in the state of california as you mentioned mark the sports information director poll colleges san mateo at number two college of san francisco at number three and then ventura in college of the canyons on the other side ventura is too college of the canyon or excuse me san mateo is number three with number four being san francisco one thing that's kind of interesting if you want to tie it back to fullerton college when you look at the win for college of the canyons over top of fullerton it's funny because all the sports information director polls that we've seen rank fullerton so low but yet when a team like college of canyons beats them they weigh it more heavily than they would if they beat someone else yeah it's going to be interesting as the season continues because ryan i mean the big thing's going to come down to who wins their conferences their different divisions i mean we can look at those you know and and who's sitting where with everything right now and that'll tell you where they might be i mean if you look in the american pacific league standings right now moorpark is on top in that one when you look at the mountain league standings it's pasadena city college it's on top of that one you look at the metro league standings it's citrus on top of that one then you go to the national side which really counts fullerton's on top so far in their conference no conference play has taken place central it's riverside with mount sac at number two of course mount sachs only played one game so far and then you get to the national division for here with the national northern league it's alan hancock bakersfield canyons and ventura all those teams are 3-0 so when you look at the standings and where we may go down the road one of those teams may come out of there undefeated but those other three teams are going to be beat up and so when you look at the way things stand right now it could really be topsy turvy when it comes time for at least the state championship and those competitors will have an opportunity to take each other on hopefully fullerton will be one of them here on sportsnetusa.net that's one of the things that you and i have looked at over the at least the nine years that i've been here you guys for 18 when you look at how things kind of play out it's not like you would think of in terms of quote-unquote professional sports or the ncaa where you say oh okay so if you're looking at seating this conference if you win your conference here you're good to go with an automatic big that's not the case in this in southern california you have to be consistently one of the top teams in the entire state those state rankings do end up mattering because it gets you better positioning towards the end of the season so if you win your conference and win it decisively it weighs more heavily towards your overall seating once you get into playoff time yeah and you win your conference you normally get to go and then they usually have one wild card team that gets to play also and you know you just may have a hiccup during the season when you look at three teams that are 3-0 right now one of those teams is going to be a wild card team and hopefully they will play well enough to get there and we shall see that we have other teams that we call the action for of course you're the host along with ray baker of the coaches show on 90.1 kbpk that mothership on that side our sister mothership that's run by joseph pavlenko and you guys have been out doing a lot of sports talking to a lot of coaches you're going to talk in the near future two coaches of the year at fullerton college uh softball coaches speedy and crystal but right now 90.1 is doing volleyball on wednesday nights and uh you know when you look at the volleyball well fullerton has been a powerhouse been a competitor been a participant season not too bad this season but you've been out there you've talked to the coaches what's the future look like and what are some of the rankings for volleyball across the south end right now and teams will be calling on sports kbpk and sportsetusa.net well one of the biggest things is you want to mention fullerton college volleyball recent history 2014 and 15 as you mentioned perennial contenders because in 14 they reached the playoffs in 15 they reached the third round of the playoffs and they played cyprus you and i along with corey nalin were out at that match to see who would end up moving on and going up to northern california to continue the state playoffs after that had a couple of down seasons then meghan tomochich ends up taking over the program they go right back to the playoffs it was a quick turnaround with her once she got the program going and again they have been to the playoffs in each of the three years that she has if i remember correctly each of the three years that she has been a head coach for fullerton college so in being able to talk to her one thing that you'll note is how not only available she makes herself towards us the media but also how honest she is about how her team is performing if her team goes out and has a bad match against the golden west against an orange coast she'll look at us and say i was not pleased with what we just had there on the court and the reason being x y and z we didn't end up getting our middle blockers in position we didn't serve well etc when she's having a good match and when she has one like she did against santiago canyon she'll tell you exactly what went right she says like against santiago canyon when we talked to her afterwards she said their serves were on not to mention their assists and their sets with issa domingo were exactly where they needed to be in terms of cross-court placement it allowed them to start their offense and get their kill percentage up when you look at coach tomachich and how her program is set up they are looking to have more success in the coming years last year again or the last year that they were able to compete in 2019 they go to the playoffs this year currently sitting at a total of seven and seven as corey mentioned in the last match up for fullerton they lose 3-1 to cyprus after a straight set victory over santiago canyon so for fullerton they have lost five of six they're going into orange empire conference play and when you look at this team they've got to start getting on a roll to get themselves in postseason contention again you know i got joe poplinko sitting next to my right and joe you you've been out there for two years now for volleyball and you've looked at it and seen the competition some people say the oec is probably the best or deepest conference for volleyball if cory naylor was here he would say in california and maybe in the nation you've been that producer that has sat there and watched the games i mean what is the competition like for that volleyball team from being somebody on the broadcast side of it it's a lot of close games which means a lot of long nights um and i'll say that that uh probably goes to the skill of the teams and both teams being able to keep it a close match up until the very last set well we can tell what joe likes to do not go home at night because he likes those long volleyball games corey's always said the oec is probably the most competitive conference anybody can be involved in and ryan again i'll go back because you've been here for nine years and i have to do it that way corey and i have been around for 18 years we've seen the competition in all the sports most competitive conference for a community college level that you've been able to watch in the nation or in at least california not just me but that's exactly what the coaches say coaches say as well you talk to coach tomachich she says the orange empire conference is the best in the state if not the entire country you talked to coach eddie rap back when he was the head coach of women's volleyball said the exact same thing he said the orange empire conference is where you end up dictating what the rest of the state plays like that was one thing that always stuck out to me he said the orange empire conference kind of sets the tone in terms of competition level throughout the rest of the year when you talk to some of the other con other coaches in the conference as well got to talk to orange coast in 2019 in addition to gold and west as well both those coaches said if you can't compete in the orange empire conference well that's because it's the best conference in the state when you look at the oec consistent talent that ends up being brought and distributed across all of the teams and it makes for consistent contenders in the state if you look at the oec in terms of championships four out of the last ten so if you love volleyball men's or women make sure you can the first half i mean if you look at the scoreboard you say it was all fullerton college when you look at the stats do they sort of reinforce that statement that it was all fullerton college absolutely especially if you're looking at it from an offensive perspective in the first half fullerton yeah they lead it 24-7 but in terms of first downs 15-5 fullerton is outpacing alan hancock which is something different than what we've seen in fullerton college offense in years past especially under coach garrett campbell what you'll see is kind of an even distribution of first downs between them and the opposing team and then you'll look up at the scoreboard and say hey why is it 70 points up on the board for fullerton the reason why is because they're more of a big play type offense that's what they play to so to see them have these long drives 15 first downs in the first half not necessarily what we're used to but they're getting that success when you look at passing yards 131 to 46 fullerton on top of allen hancock to this point rushing yards here's where it has been a difference 26 for 185 for fullerton 14 for 17 for alan hancock and again what we were told coming into this game alan hancock's offense lives and dies by their rushing game it leads to them getting those over the top passes like we saw them try to go to in the second quarter if they can't establish their rushing game they have a lot of issues so fullerton with 185 yards of total rushing compared to allen hancock's 17 that's something that is huge looking at the scoreboard right now yeah and it's something that we expected and we were told would eventually happen and it's happened in this game so far let's look at the individual aspects when we look at rushing because i'm surprised and i need to know what has brandon rankin's done so far in this game brandon rankins to this point nine rushes for 31 yards a long of 11 with a touchdown as well but if you're looking at an overall leading rusher trey edwards seven rushes 81 yards 24 inches long with a touchdown it goes back to what you were telling corey you're looking at trey saying okay i'm going to take the snap i'll take a look at one take a look at two you know what i see 15 yards downfield might as well pick up that first down and let's keep this drive going we have a chance for a big play later on fullerton isn't pushing themselves to try and get that big play or nothing you're seeing them take what is being given to them by the defense if all those defensive backs drop back then trey edwards says you know what i'll take the first down and let's keep on going well i think the magic here comes from the magic as there's other stats there ryan i'll let you go through those real quick and then we'll get to second half so let's finish off those stats and and tell me what's happening here so when you look at total offensive plays and yards between these two sides 22 for 63 for allen hancock for fullerton college 39 for 3 16. if you want to look at individual efforts between these two sides chandler galban 7 of 9 99 yards no touchdowns no interceptions trey edwards three of four for 32 so overall in terms of passing yardage this is a fullerton team right now who is 10 of 13 10 of 13 for 131 and again we mentioned the rushing trey edwards leading it he's followed by ryan black who had that long 60 yard touchdown run and he's leading the way with 60 in terms of non-quarterback rushers rankings with 31 right after him if you want to look at things for alan hancock's perspective store five of eight for 46 and then after that rushing wise it is sedan thomas 2 for 10. that is the max for them so far marie smith eight attempts for negative one yards and a long a five that rushing attack has not been able to get going to this point if you want to look at it in terms of defense between these two sides for fullerton college total tackles jonathan smith has had a game so far five tackles in total three solo and he has a tackle for a loss in addition to a pass breakup he has had an afternoon you also got to look at tedrick ross who is listed with three tackles and chandler brown as well who has three four the defensive stats for alan hancock four total tackles for lj vongsley in addition to jaquez mcwilliams with five and they each have a tackle for loss so if you add up all the numbers ryan just gave it you multiply it by two you ask corey neeland to divide it by 4 for you that should put you at 2 minutes and 50 seconds here in halftime with the score being to the good coaching they had they they were when things weren't going their way sometimes they're able to keep cool under pressure uh to steal a corey nailing phrase there was some get tuitiveness on the field when they needed it and just certain players and positions were amazing um i cannot think of i remember there's an outfielder whose name i can't help him out old man help him out the alzheimer's is setting in uh there's an outfielder that everybody was talking about but i remember you and i mark after games we'd be talking about the third bass player and how she would make these catches she'd have these bullets flying at her face and she'd be making these at some times game making catches to help out fullerton come away with the win during the season well their player of the year actually for their team played at shortstop steve ramirez there we go short stops short shot d ramirez and you're also talking about casey dufresne third base who definitely had one of the better seasons that we've seen from a multi-position athlete for fullerton college softball that's right i said athlete not just softball player but athlete for the fullerton college athletic department and to be motion against the bulldogs that'll move them five yards back so store in a quarterback who will be the up back and that's going to go against michael pacheco erickson's going to be the running back they run an offset eye or what some people call a power eye it's not like the maryland eye the maryland eye actually is an eye formation now mark looking at micah pacheco lists him as a five foot three linebacker that big left tackle for alan hancock if he is 5'3 i am all of 150. yeah 5'3 and 280 is what they mark him as so third down 15. this is an area where the defensive line especially on the last two plays has done a great job of not just getting out of their blocks but making sure that there's no opportunity to get into the second level for the running backs for alan hancock mccoy to the far side of the field walker to the near side of the field shotgun formation for the bulldog store goes back looks pump fakes throws it across the middle that's mccoy that goes and get it but it's going to be short of a first down short of the 50 should bring up a fourth down and the bulls dogs should punt it away that's what you saw from the defensive backs for fullerton college they stood back about five yards off the line of scrimmage they will give them those four or five yards coming out of that last play as long as they don't get up to the stick that's fine with them you can take wanted that free play and as quick as the defensive line sorry referee as quick as the defensive line is getting up the field you may see a quick hitter with brandon raykins just a quick pop dive play so they move it up five yards will stay second down wind the clock brandon rankin still in in the backfield they hand it off to rankins breaks free touchdown fullerton college [Music] so that quick hitter that you talked about it was just a different participant with the football in brandon rankins yeah yeah yeah you look at the end of the play one of the things when we talked to brandon rankins on the coach's show is we noticed how good he is in terms of leading his team both vocally and on the field at the end of that play there was a block by one of the offensive linemen that went a little bit too far after the play rankings comes over grabs his offensive lineman brings him back to the sideline and says hey we've got the score don't worry about it let's move on ball of spotted kick is up and the kick is good so with 8 57 to go when it looked like maybe the bulldogs defense would help the offense well just didn't happen to work out that way the hornets get away with a turnover and thing for him is he's probably got the best trainer in southern california okay the best trainer corey nalen made me correct that juan knows i really care about him and lorena as athletic trainers ryan osborne you've been around him uh best trainers in southern california uh so we're fortunate to have them at fullerton college and in this case juan's out here to make sure that young man is going to be in the best of hands with this injury and in talking to one that's one thing that you'll get a sense of is how much he actually cares for these students he'll talk to these students and if they have an injury one that's significant or even minimal he talks to them make sure that he gets to know them says hey what's what's your daily routine look like what does your diet look like what does your recovery time look like and he makes sure that he works with each one of them you can talk to him and and say hey do you end up you know talking to your guys well after they're done at fullerton college and he says yeah you know what i contact or i had some of these players contact me a few days ago and say hey you know it's been three four years but you know you took care of me after this one game where i ended up getting hurt and because of you i'm able to keep going with my football career he stays in touch with these football players basketball players water polo lacrosse whatever it is at fullerton college he's able to make sure that not only is the person okay but also are they engaged mentally with their recovery time throughout their entire fullerton college career cuevas number one trainer in community college sports and college sports in california trainer athletic trainer thank you lorena just popped me in the back of my head to make sure to remind you you thought the linebackers were fast galban goes back throws it up flagged down at the line of scrimmage and are they gonna get another hold on brandon rankins legal formation on the offense the they're going to call illegal procedure against the hornets and what they could do is say the defense jumped they nobody else moved the end took off running so let's see if they called that so they're gonna you know like you said they call the illegal procedure and it's funny because if an offensive lineman would reach out and touch the defensive lineman in the neutral zone that would have been an offside but because of the defense jumped back didn't make contact that's where the fall start is called and then huffman took off running and it's all off sudden if they think it's a delay on huffman's part right it's illegal procedure brandon rankin straight up the middle continues to chug his way gets all the way down to 25. so the bulldogs have been up and down the field but only have seven points on the board and that was on a six yard drive after a muffed punt or a bad snap i should see on a punt galban keeps it himself straight up the middle puts on the speed refuses to go down refuses does he get across they're going to mark him down right at the one as galban fakes it to brandon rankin he takes off running follows the whole of the trailer their rank and leaves and almost on this particular saturday we're not able to move the ball as well as we'd like but we can get it into this range and say we have confidence in our kicker it helps the offense knowing that because you can say no matter what if we can get ourselves to here even if we don't get into the end zone we have that chance to still put points on the board because we have a guy who can put it right right at the 45. so we're at the three minute and 45 second mark in this game and guys i know i do a quick wrap-up of this game so let me go around the room real quickly assessment of the game overall for the hornets actually they were thinking it was cfl football and it was third down time to punt so that's why we had second there was going to move the down marker the third punting situation overall situation assessment decent game better better than last week and so we'll see if they can keep it going next week against el camino that's going to be the assessment i'll give that to you i think it goes back to exactly what we talked to the defensive coaches about winning the line of scrimmage and they did that today so if you're fullerton college you're very encouraged with how you were able to control the pace of play through the line of scrimmage and joe i'm not going to let you get away saying nothing what do you think because you're out here in all the games that's fair uh i think going into the end of the first half of the game fullerton probably needed some sort of pep talk i think they got that during the halftime they made an adjustment and the bulldogs lost that little bit of momentum they were gaining at the end of the second half which was unfortunate to them but good news for the hornets sora goes back a little chucking pushing incomplete and for me well
