underway here in the second quarter i mentioned in the pregame that new fun promotion we've got going called name that ram where we are giving clues to a former fresno city football player and if you can come up with the correct answer you have a chance to win a dinner for two to the manhattan steakhouse and bar located in west fresno at 1731 bullard avenue again i'm gonna give four clues about a former ram football player after the fourth clue is given i will give you a heads up about when you can go to our facebook page and give the answer i already gave the first clue earlier here's the second clue this former ram was the asb president and also played one year of baseball at fresno city college hmm interesting but it's really interesting second and eight from the college of san mateo 12 holiday gonna keep it and he's inside the ten near the five they're pushing the pile and he gets it down to the two yard line big adam salazar number 72 just got on the back of that pile kind of bush push style and uh it looked like that holiday was gonna be stood up at the five but he got all the way down to the two yeah i think adam was just just squashing him keep going forward i'm gonna bench press you into the end zone first goal first and goal for fresno city they trail 14 nothing here with 14 37 and counting left to play in the second quarter holiday in shotgun from the two he's got joe nation behind him and donation goes in motion but a tie out is called so stop everything while we talk things over joe did an interesting 360 at the time that san mateo called the timeout he was going he was going in motion he heard the the whistles and he did a little like skateboarding move i almost have a feeling that nobody was going in motion with joe nation dijonnette and so he saw an easy touchdown in front of him and that's why he was upset so he did a big twirl in the air there when when the bulldogs called a timeout but give the head coach of san mateo credit tim tulik some credit for calling a time out there because clearly his defense was not ready for what the rams were bringing to the table correct and joe and i think it's exactly what you said i mean they noticed oh no one's going with joe nation on a swing in motion and uh he did kind of a figure skating move not to say joe nation looks like a figure skater but by the way just to recap so i'll give you that first clue again for the name that ram promotion um the first clue was the mother of this former ram cried when he decided to pursue professional football instead of returning home to be a teacher and there as the rams look over to the sideline for the call trying to cut into this lead for san mateo the bulldogs lead it 14-0 early second quarter rams are in shotgun here on second and goal from inside the one joe nation to holiday's left he takes the snap gives it to big joe joe putting the head down but he can't get in he is stacked up at about the line of scrimmage might have even lost a couple of inches on that play and give that bulldog defense credit as they stack up joe nation at the one so that's going to bring up a third in goal for fresno city i have to give that bulldog defense a ton of credit being the fact that we just called donation tree trunks or the train and um and justin holiday moved him in that and that on that play to another side trying to get account for the defensive like side of the ball third and goal from the one holiday just going to keep it this time got some room and he is into the end zone touchdown fresno city make it 14-6 san mateo now with the extra point pending justin holiday takes it in out of shotgun from one yard out as i mentioned he's already found the end zone a bunch of times this year on the ground that's his fifth touchdown of the year on the ground and that is a that's tough for any defense when you got a quarterback who can run like that down near the goal line right and i think i think you're right in your play-by-play on that he just decided i'm just gonna do this right now we're from one and a half yards out the extra point is up and through courtesy of nathan coons so make it 14-7 the rams are back okay [Music] welcome back to ratcliffe stadium 14-7 san mateo over the rams 1301 left to play here in the first half the rams just putting together a nice scoring drive that culminates with a justin holiday one yard touchdown to get back in this football game and they boot away the kickoff coons does it's taken inside the 20 by one of the bulldog up men and he is upended near the 30 number 42 isaiah johnson of the rams with a big tackle on that play we're seeing a lot of skateboarding and snowboarding moves because he just did a full flip i'm not that shocked to see isaiah coming up with something kind of wild because on those questionnaires we had that he filled out for us he listed his talents as being a great dj a comedian an actor a director uh and a model as well so oh isaiah multi-talented and you know initiates stunt for stunt doubles and a great special teams performer as well he's a 511 freshman by the way out of hoover number 42 isaiah johnson a terrific tackle on special teams there the bulldogs take over at their own 27 and this is the first that we've seen of their other running back that's number seven jay juan evans of college of san mateo this guy's put up some really good numbers in the first three games of the year he picks up two on that play fresno city uh i have to admit it looks like they're waking up a little bit and like they've had enough because out on the edges right there we have a little skirmish shot on the edges they did that they've done that a couple times not that coach kaveli is a huge fan of that but it does show that they're waking up and ready to go now second and eight from their own 29. they give it to evans again he's got some room around the right side he's into the second level and taken down near the first down marker this is really close scott this might be worth the measurement oh they're gonna give it to him i think on that play we saw the burst from jay juan evans coming into this game jay juan who's a bounce back from virginia tech by the way averaging over 100 yards on the ground in each game this season 9.2 yards per carry and four total touchdowns yeah i watched that guy on film i gave you a call on your cell phone about him i said who is this i love when i get the mike brady call me he saw something on film that made him jump out of his seat another wide open receiver on first and ten but he drops the football i'm a little concerned on that because that looks exactly like the touchdown play the run they're running a dig road at about 12 yards a crossing route at about 12 round yards and there's nobody there so they do a high with number two who's number number two uh mason starling for them and they go high on the post and they run a dig route underneath it and it's wide open it's been wide open every time yeah that would have been a big pickup if he had hit it in stride and made the catch probably picked up 20 or 30 on that play fortunately for the rams it falls incomplete so it sets up a second and 10 for the bulldogs this time it's page around right and he's got some room breaks a tackle on the secondary into ram territory another move at the ram 35 before he's finally taken down there after a big pickup he goes from their own 37 all the way to the ram 33 so give him 30 yards on that play and the bulldogs are on the move once again yeah 34-yard pickup he just ran right through everybody i mean there was nothing more than just being a big tough guy who says i'm gonna go get some yards i actually had a chance to break that the bulldogs go to the ground again and it's evans with a little pirouette in the backfield to get out of the arms of one tackler but he can't get away from a host of rams after that give him two yards on the play so it'll be second and eight from the fresno city 31. and quebec watson is is back in the air in the backfield a lot like you indicated earlier but sometimes he's overrunning things he needs to kind of settle down a little bit get back on his heels a little bit especially when they're running with these guys hey remember the rams came into this game only giving up 35 yards per game on the ground they are way over that number already on first down batari hits an open receiver he finds number three that's trey hines of the bulldogs and that's another first down for san mateo and this is exactly what you and i were talking about earlier scott i think that the success of both of these offenses is going to be outside the hashes and did you notice that throw is outside the hashes we're breaking outside of the pocket and get it out on the numbers i was watching film of both teams and i think that's going to be the solution for each team and the bulldogs have been running the ball well her here early and you see it's setting up their play action stuff and batari on the move rolling out and finding some open receivers paige on first and ten but he has swallowed up again there by quebec watson so we caught quebec's name for the second time already today and i liked how he got back on our heels like we were just discussing right now but that being said did you see how that run was in between the ashes they've had a lot of success with their own game outside the hashes on powers and sweeps and things where they bounce outside the tackled untied ends when they come in between the front seven for fresno city is handling that much better than the other run plays second and call it 10. no gain on that first down run for paige the bulldogs bring a receiver in motion and then fake it to page atari still back there looking looking looking now going to throw it away near the gold line good decision by the sophomore quarterback live to play another down there is a ram down on the field third looks like it's one of the defensive linemen for fresno city there's an official out as well so let's take a break you're listening to fresno city college football on 940 kaino who is that scott do you know coach hawkins is walking out there that's kind of not good that's a guy he's very concerned about um who is that it's arville arvel rogers it is he's sitting up uh you can go 30 seconds all right oh no welcome back to ratcliffe stadium san mateo and fresno city going at it here in a non-conference junior uh junior college football game and we're in the second quarter it's 14-7 san mateo arvel rogers was the injured ram on the play he was able to walk off under his own power he's being looked at by the trainers on the sideline right now big arbel one of those defensive linemen for fresno city one of the leaders there on that defensive line third and ten for san mateo from the fresno city 19 batari back to throw again looking right now being chased he's scrambling he's flushed and that one falls incomplete near the near sideline so good defense by the rams going to force a field goal attempt it looks like as the special teams unit for the bulldogs is running onto the field and guess who was in coverage again scott sahil soda sahil's the man he seems to make a big play every week for this fresno city ram football team the freshman out of central high norcal defensive player of the week after that performance against santa rosa placencha on the field to attempt a 36-yard field goal to give the bulldogs a 10 point lead and placentia's kick is good so placentia knocks that one through with 9 10 left to play now here in the first half it's 17-7 san mateo over fresno city that probably would have been good from 50. i mean that kid's got a foot i think he was over five on field goals coming in but uh wow he made the one that mattered here today yeah he's got a foot on him the bulldog is going to kick things off here leading 17-7 here in the second quarter decent crowd filing into ratcliffe today it has really cooled off now it's become very comfortable at this time of the evening the whole field in shade it's starting to get darker a little earlier fall is coming it really feels like football now it does really it's actually feeling really nice now we got a little bit of a light breeze the smoke is still in here a little bit i don't i don't know what we can do about that scott but you know i do think we've made an impact scott bemas made an impact on the crowd here you think so was that my influence right there my twitter account made it happen i think there's more flowing in what's up well if you can still make it out to radcliff there is still time they got food trucks out here beautiful day for football i'm sure you've been at home on the couch watching college football all day come out and you can see some in person here into the evening this one's going to be good i got a feeling this one's going to come down to the late fourth quarter wow that guy's got a foot scott placentia boots one completely out of the end zone well based on the numbers he may not be the most accurate but he can really drill it i might have the wind behind him too i think going that way as well which which also helps i think so too i think he was trying to make a field goal from his kickoff is that i think that actually counts does it in canadian football i don't if that happens i i think you might get a point or something like that for that all right the rams taking over from their own 25 they trail 17-7 but they've gotten back in this football game after that rough start they really they really have you can feel a little bit of a shift back to where it's equal at the beginning of the game san mateo bulldogs i was like uh that was not the start that fresno city rams wanted but now you're starting to feel like all right these these teams are equal a little bit more but now you're in a difficult spot where fresno city rams have to play catch-up because of the initial start hey remember this game started with a jalen lampley kickoff return for a touchdown 95-plus yards on that one one play in the bulldogs led seven nothing we're ready to go here we had a little delay there for a minute as the rams get set up offensively holiday takes the snap gonna give it to tubbs tub's looking for some room cuts it back and sneaks his way through the middle of that line for about three yards nice little duck move by tubbs he'd get a couple yards there because there was nothing there he ducked underneath uh the defensive end and and ducked under his arms like you're you're no in a boxing match and dodging from a jab and got a couple yards jacob tubbs the freshman from ridge point high school in texas out of missouri city texas second and 12. so there was a penalty on that first down play for the rams and here goes tubbs around left hand he's got some room he's got a first down and he's out near the 40 called the 39 for fresno city 17 yards on the carry just using the speed to get wide there and the rams have a first down he showed me some speed i didn't know he had right there scott he's more of a big guy kind of like fred is um and they uh i think they're deciding the perimeter game that you know that brady talked about maybe something you want to look at get out there on the numbers and try to get that space yeah they went wide there and it worked tubbs the leading ball carrier amongst the running backs for this fresno city team this year you might have a sideline warning here scott the official came over to the sideline to talk to the fresno city bench for some reason and now we are ready for football again first and ten from their own 39. two receivers left there's an h back in there and it's holiday keeping it on the zone read and a really good defensive play by the bulldogs out there on the perimeter one of the db's able to make a nice play wow he this is what we were talking about earlier they're flying up they are they're not really respecting the passing game at this point i think it needs to be considered by the fresno city offense to try to get it out on the perimeter with a long pass something to try to back them up a little bit they're all coming forward inclusive of the safeties in cover too javon still making the nice tackle on that last play second and ten holiday throwing this way going long looks like he's gonna overthrow it and a really nice defensive play is made by the fresno city receiver out there cathodric story as that one was just kind of thrown up for grabs the db had a better chance at it really than story did but story went back and broke it up i do have to admit that i like the shot we just talked about it and katric's story went back there and he recognized i'm in a worse position than this guy is this about to be an interception i'm going to turn in the defender and knock this down which you did a great job of the one positive on that last play that fresno city offensive line was able to give holiday some time to let that route develop third and ten for the rams four receivers in the ball game two either way green in the backfield hall day escapes the pocket he's got an open receiver and it hits the turf he had darion gaines running open about 25 yards down field and holiday sidearmed it and unfortunately was a little behind gained he was open but the rams miss an opportunity and they're gonna have to punt the football away i was extremely unfortunate to see from up here scott he was uh you know when you get the plays like they're wide open like that this you know san mateo quarterback did the same thing you overthrew him and justin holiday right now for fresno city under through his wide open receiver and as a coach you sit there and go just put it in his hands yeah when you're playing a good team like san mateo you got to take advantage of all those opportunities so they're going to punt it away coons this one shanked a little bit it hits at the san mateo 41 and rolls sideways and a little bit forward and it's marked down by keenan wolf there at the bulldog 38 so that's where the bulldogs will take over leading 17-7 about halfway through the second quarter fresno city and san mateo junior college football non-conference action but this game could have some meaning down the road when it comes to the state playoffs later in the season big time these are two of the top teams in the state um and this i think has huge implications on what the california community college athletics association rankings are going to indicate uh for who wins this and who moves upper back there are three conferences that get automatic bids to the norcal playoffs and there's one at large as well on first down they hand it off to jaywan evans and he goes for one over the right tackle good defense by the rams that defensive line holding up strong so it'll be second and nine for the bulldogs approaching seven minutes left here in the second quarter the rams trailing by 10 17-7 got off to an awful start in this game the opening kickoff was returned for a touchdown by the bulldogs and on the next possession for the bulldogs luke batari hit his tight end for a 20-yard score i made it 10-0 or 14-0 the rams have gotten back in it a little bit and now relying on their defense here to try to get off the field the bulldogs keep it on the ground on second down and they pick up another four yards rams football on kaino is brought to you by fresno first bank where they've added new meaning to the word local that was a pretty good run by juwan evans uh bulldogs he uh he didn't really have much very jump cut in the back and uh and found a little gap in between his tight end and his tackle and gained four or five yards evans as i mentioned played a little at virginia tech so he's got some ability batari in shotgun fakes it to evans this time now looking left and finds his tight end and he's got it for a first down that's anthony landfield the player who caught the touchdown earlier for the bulldogs give him a first down that's into ram territory at their 46 they're moving the chains it'll be first and ten for the bulldogs there chanting landfire six foot five 250 pounds from saint francis high school it looks like he's got a little wheels on him too he caught the touchdown earlier as you just indicated and he's causing some problems right now first intent for the bulldogs in ram territory now they give it to paige paige making some moves approaching the 40. he got it going left then bounced it back to the right found a little room and picks up five yards on the play so it'll be second and five from the ram 41 525 and counting left to play in the first half 17-7 bulldogs over fresno city this battle of two teams ranked in the top six in the state batari setting up in shotgun kind of a tight formation he is going to throw pressure coming wings at left side over the middle had a receiver there but good defense broken up by the sean deshaun ruffin came in i guess he is feeling healthy hey remember he came off the field earlier uh after being injured on a punt um that pass was intended for starling mason but he got his hands on it had a chance to make the grab but ruffin came up made a hit pretty quickly after the ball arrived and so it falls incomplete third and five from the 41. batari flushed to the right and throws it into the turf in the direction of his running back in the backfield i think they're trying to set up a screen and what happened there was paige went down to the turf i think he twisted an ankle or something and he was gonna be the target of the screen so batari just decided to turf it near him and move on to fourth down i think he couldn't be any more accurate i saw right off the bat paige dropped like something he's limping off now too um he dropped as if something hit him like you know he got hit with a rock or something big play here fourth and five for the bulldogs battari going long got a receiver out there and it's in and out of his hands perfect throw by luke batari in the direction of jalen lampley he got behind the db out there and the ball was on the money but he just didn't make the catch he threw that far and that's the thing with jalen lampley that we're noticing right now the guy that did the opening kickoff return for a touchdown jalen lampley you could just try to out throw him and he actually did right now which is kind of impressive throw was on the money and we've seen some good accuracy from atari so far in this game but the rams get a break so they get off the field turn it over on downs and they'll take over from their own 41 trailing 17-7 here with 454 left to play in the first half is that esteban on the backfield or who is the holiday in there i think that's tubbs to holiday is right and he's going to get the carry bounces it right then gets up field and it's taken down by dylan junior of the bulldogs after a gain of three so it looks like coach harmon running backs coach for fresno city colleges and give him a nice dose of tubs and fred and just keep going back and forth because they're changing every play yeah fred green back in there for the rams on second and seven holiday gonna throw spins out of the oncoming rush he's got some room he's going to run out past the 45 to midfield into bulldog territory and goes out of bounds at the 46 yard line of san mateo 19 yard pickup for holiday move the sticks first down fresno city we see the athleticism on that play again mike as a free rusher was coming for san mateo to holiday's left he does a little spin move and avoids him and there's nobody out there but green grass yeah i liked how how quickly he noticed it coming off the left edge i think that's kind of one of those byu be your own blocker kind of situations and just go they're gonna throw again here on first down it's green with the reception and fred green's still on his feet somehow gets inside the 30 down to the san mateo 27. we see some of that talent from fred green this guy apparently broke all of edger and james's high school records in immokalee florida he's a bounce back from mercyhurst caught the ball in the flat incredible job keeping his balance and gets up field for about 10 more yards yeah he kind of looked like a gymnast like on the floor mat like he put his hands down and he had the ball in one of them and he kept his balance in the middle of the field and got i don't know 10 extra yards holiday gonna throw now on first and ten from the 27. looking for blankets and that's got to be interference it is the flag is down so this is going to be pass interference on college of san mateo dylan jr on the coverage for the bulldogs it was one of those underthrown deep balls the receiver tried to come back to the ball and the db didn't get his head turned around and got got his hands on blanca's there and that's going to be called every time yeah exactly he just never got his head around it wasn't bad defense but when you don't get your head around you're just you're interfering i mean there's no other definition than that yeah you got to get your head turned around if you get your head turned around then you can go after the football just as much as the receiver cam but if you're looking at him and you're holding him that's going to draw a flag almost every time is that usually an issue it can be let's just say it can be all right first and ten for the rams the officials are trying to figure out where this ball should be spotted they're marking it off half the distance to the goal i believe because of the past interference i agree with you 17-7 bulldogs 313 left to go in the first half after falling behind early the rams trying to get back in this football game trailing by 10. all right they've spotted it at the 12. holiday in shotgun gonna give it to tubs tubbs getting up field couple tacklers get them for the bulldogs but a decent gain on first down i'm gonna give him five yards down to the seven and it'll be second and five from there i do like how tubbs put his left foot in the field and and you know got up right inside the numbers you know you're talking about i was talking about how i want things up the perimeter he got out on the perimeter but then once he noticed that everybody was flowing to the sideline he put his left foot in the ground and just got up field for five yards to take that every time so second and five from the seven the rams trying to get in that end zone an inch a little closer they give it to green green avoids a tackler in the backfield now coming near side he's giving ground unfortunately now reverses his field he's still on his feet what a play by fred green he's inside the 10 cuts it back at the five and is finally brought down at the four yard line all right green junior on the gary scott he ran 40 yards to get two yards or maybe back to the line of scrimmage that was one of those no no no no great run great run get in there i mean he looked like he was dead to rights for a loss of i want to call it seven or eight yards reversed his field and then kept on going you know green is tough to get to the ground he's got that low center of gravity he's only 510 200 pounder again this is the first time we're seeing him all year he's seeing his first action for fresno city the freshman out of florida admittedly scott i was excited for you and i to get the opportunity to watch him play because i saw him in camp and he he can run third and one it's holiday i think he's got the first down the rams could pick up a first down there without getting into the end zone it's really close scott oh they gave it to him they give him the first down so it's going to be first and goal now from the one-yard line under 130 left to play here in the opening half couldn't have a better scenario than that first and goal from the one with 130 left get this thing in the in the end zone with big uh also tree trunk legs tubs in the backfield or justin you know i was about to say you got a holiday in shotgun just let him take it holiday in shotgun going to fake it he's going to take it and he's into the end zone touchdown fresno city make it 17-13 now with the extra point to come as justin holiday gets in for another rushing touchdown and fresno city is very much back in this football game justin holiday have yourself a year freshman from lamar and you got the whole sideline fired up there is a huge momentum shift going on right now yeah justin holiday as i mentioned came into this game with four touchdowns on the ground he's already added two more touchdowns today so that's now six touchdowns in three and a half games on the ground for justin holiday the extra point from coons is up and through it's 17-14 now with just over a minute to play here in the first half you're listening to fresno city college now is back here at fresno city he's going to be our player interview at halftime and we'll also let you know about another ram to remember at halftime as we'll look back at the fresno city career and the times of a fresno city wall of famer that's all coming up at halftime but we still got one minute left to play here in the first half san mateo leading 17-14 batari gonna throw and speaking of deshawn ruffin he makes a nice play on that pass attempt for the tight end breaks it up but there is a flag down on the field that was really really close i feel like that could have been simultaneous but it looks like the flag is back towards the line of scrimmage desean ruffin like i mentioned is going to be our halftime guest he's made a couple nice plays here in the first half deshawn actually originally from the state of virginia came out to fresno to go to high school at sunnyside high then as i mentioned signed with fresno state was a gray shirt there and then redshirted saw some time as a freshman actually was becoming a key contributor but then tore his acl and he made his way back here to fresno city he's gonna most assuredly if he stays healthy move on to another four-year institution i completely agree with you i'm glad to see him back on the field after that punt uh issue that we saw earlier first and ten from the 45 here's batari and a nice catch over the middle by number four of the bulldogs that's jalen lampley the guy who returned the opening kickoff for a score gets the hands up there in the air makes a nice grab if he doesn't make that catch it might have been picked off jalen lampley is a player he's got speed and he's got great route running ability here comes the pressure on first and ten and batari is sacked ben io getting in there and making the play for the rams io of course the 6-4 260 pounder out of hoover high school had a huge hit last week in the win at american river and uh makes another big play here today oh he's got coaches jumping into him too doing chest bumps so that's when you know you did something well you know coach dale hawkins who coaches i o on that defensive line he describes he describes ben as big fast and strong he moved to d-line from outside linebacker and obviously showing off the speed there to get your quarterback no not surprising because i actually didn't know that scott and he is um he definitely shows his quickness right there so that's obviously the outside linebacker skills he probably had at hoover high school but he's also a big boy so i definitely understand why coach hawkins asked coach kavelia hey can i can i have that guy yeah can i put him in my position group uh you know and if you want an idea of the the type of talent that plays community college football in the state of california then i o is the perfect example six four 260 like we mentioned in high school he ran an 11 8 500 meter he ran a 2371 200 in high school at hoover and that guy's six four two sixty girls should start looking at this kid that's what i'm saying i'm glad i don't go against him san mateo now with a second and 21 after the io sack from near midfield and it's battari floating one out right side another good throw and great a very nice catch from lampley for big yardage but there's a flag down in the fresno city secondary i'm thinking that might be past interference on the rams anyways which will be declined lampley needs to start drawing a little more attention but you know i coach scheidt's defense isn't like that it's fundamental defense so you know you're going to go ahead and base it on what you do every day in practice and you're not going to just focus on one kid but that kid is making an impact for san mateo bulldogs right now batari who came in completing 64 of his passes has shown some real nice accuracy as well in this first half floated that one out beautifully to lampley i think it is a past interference on fresno city rams white hats going over to the one of those sunny side corners up there to make a tackle immediately and now a flag gets thrown there was some extra extracurriculars going on after the tackle emotions were running high yeah i think it's on them scott i think number five wide receiver just got in a little bit of trouble right now and you see coach tony cavilla going out really politely with his hands behind his back which always means that he's not happy about something yeah the call is going to be on the bulldogs so i think coach she uh he just wants to make his his point taken that they're getting a little bit chippy and um thank you for the call but you need to hear you need to keep an eye on these guys for the bulldogs you know kind of appropriate we're in fresno we got bulldogs and rams going at it right yeah [Music] i have to say prior to us uh preparing for this broadcast here scott i looked at it the bulldogs are blue white with a little red edge and when you looked at him on game film they had a bulldog in the center of the field i was i was kind of figuring out how i was gonna take this being that i'm a fresno state alum yeah the only problem is they look like san jose state out there on the field that's the only problem right with the bulldog analogy um it's almost wrong for a team in san jose state colors to be you know to be called the bulldog right it's a little bit more of a royal blue for those of you that are listening and aren't here if you're not here get over here but it's more of a royal blue than a navy blue and um tail there is a similar quote the white helmets uh the the blue pants and the white white jersey tops fresno city of course and they're all red jerseys with the uh the white ram on the helmet first and ten for college of san mateo first and 23 now after they mark off to give the bulldogs a six-point lead in the crowd getting into it here trying to create some noise snap is good hold is good as well the kick is up and it is no good he pushed it to the left so the bulldogs got on the board right away a 95 plus yard kick return for a score on the opening kickoff that made it seven nothing bulldogs on the ensuing drive for san mateo luke putari from his big tight end anthony landsphere for 20 yards that made it 14-0 less than five minutes in and the rams uh boy they they looked to be in trouble at that point but they found a way to claw back into this football game in the second quarter put a nice drive together culminating with a justin holiday one yard touchdown run that made it 14-7 the bulldogs added a field goal after that to make it 17-7 but then nearing the half there justin holiday finishing off another nice drive for the rams with a one-yard touchdown that made it 17-14 and the bulldogs miss a field goal going into the locker room so that's where we stand 1714 fresno city trails san mateo at the break real quick let's run down some other top 25 scores from the world of college football while we have a minute ucla that game against stanford has just gone final and the 24th ranked bruins beat the cardinal 35-24 so the bruins bounced back from that loss of fresno state and get a win at stamford tennessee in florida currently in the third quarter the 11th ranked gators lead 24-14 nebraska and michigan state tied at 13 in the third quarter kansas state is visiting oklahoma uh oklahoma state in the 25th ranked wildcats trail 31-13 in the third right now top ranked alabama leads 42-7 and a half over southern miss fourth ranked oklahoma trailing west virginia 10-7 at halftime the 10th ranked buckeyes of ohio state lead 38-7 over akron at half north carolina and georgia tech it's 13-7 yellowjackets they lead the 21st ranked tar heels at halftime earlier today georgia number two in the country 62-0 over vanderbilt fifth ranked iowa 24-14 over colorado state sixth ranked penn state 38-17 over villanova 16th ranked arkansas upsets texas a m the seventh-ranked aggies go down 20 to 10 at the hands of the razorbacks nc rutgers 20-13 auburn over georgia state 34-24 my pleasure now to be joined by the new athletic dirk can i still call you the new athletic director at fresno city college i don't know man i think i've been in the shoes for a long time it seems like a year seems like almost 25 years of course i'm talking about derek johnson who's taken over here at fresno city uh tell everybody a little bit about your background and what excited you about coming to fresno city well i have a background in sports administration i've been at several schools uh ncaa division two and uh also uh two-year schools actually i i got my taste of two-year college athletics in california riverside city college another one of the powerhouses here for california uh and and that's really where i kind of kind of made that decision that the two years where i want to make my niche we we really are hands-on with student athletes and really you can really see that impact as far as being able to talk to student athletes every day and see that impact on them academically and athletically and really to see them but the most gratifying thing is to see a student graduate no matter what level you are but here when you see them graduate and transfer to a four year is amazing it's amazing having been at riverside like you were you've obviously seen uh fresno city you know you've had an opportunity to know about the reputation of fresno city college athletics what is that reputation and what would you like to do with it i mean it's ironic when i was at riverside we we uh actually ended up second in a naticka cup to fresno city when they won that cup that year making them the best uh two-year athletic program in the nation so i've watched fresno city even before i got here knowing the the history of uh not just athletics but the history of the institution itself uh obviously athletics we have a storied history i mean it's it's amazing what fresno city college athletics has done i would say probably the most storied athletic program in the nation in in the nation as far as athletics if you look at the number of uh notable athletic uh athletes that have graduated from fresno city college and gone on to do great things whether it's professional or or just in the occupational sense um it's amazing i mean you got tom flores you got tom seaver uh you got uh russell smith uh i mean i can go on and on even even current student athletes that have graduated that are doing great things in the pros so i mean but but all in all fresno city just has a it has a vibe about it it has a if you will a confidence in athletics and academics um being successful and that's the expectation level uh right now if you look at our programs after taking a year off i should yeah more than a year off for kovit i mean we've come back our men's soccer team is six and one women's soccer team is five two and one obviously our football team hopefully after today we look like we're coming on strong we'll be 4-0 and and even our our women's volleyball team now 13-2 i mean to speak more about our women's volleyball team karen robley is a head coach they've got 12 conference championships 12 conference championships so i mean if you you think about um fresno city and and and all of the success and just the notoriety and even just our faculty and our staff in general the athletic staff here we do a lot of fundraising here and these coaches put in a lot of time out of the classroom and off of the field and connecting with the community and that's that's the invaluable part that i think a lot of people don't realize we're not funded that we're not funding great now we're not a we're not a four-year school i mean we appreciate what we get but it's it's not enough to make the impact that we make on athletics and to create the success we have so uh kudos to all of our coaches and staff for uh for uh fresno city uh athletics well i speak for everybody over at uh kind of one for mike as well i really appreciate the way the school has embraced us and uh i know you have a little broadcasting in your background as well uh are we doing all right i think you're doing great man i i was listening to you guys up here it's i mean we we'd love to have you it's a it's a great addition to to what we can offer our students and also how we can promote our program you know my hope is that that you know the community will listen to this and know that fresno city college athletics is back not just football uh but we're the the ultimate goal is to do this for all of our sports to have some type of live streaming live programming for us for all of our sports and to really uh promote not just our athletic department but promote the successes that we have academically in our athletic department uh so again i think you guys are doing a great job i mean i i you know i it brings back some of those days where i was doing play-by-play commentating and and it's not easy you of course uh honored recently in the city of sanger as they renamed one of their streets uh downtown after the newly enshrined pro football hall of famer we're at halftime here 17-14 second half about to get underway before we get to the start of the second half i want to give you another clue with regards to the name that ram promotion of course you'll have an opportunity to win dinner for two to the mother of this former ram cried when he decided to pursue professional football instead of returning home to be a teacher clue number two was he was the asb president and also played one year of baseball at fresno city college clue number three he was cut by both the calgary stampeders and the washington redskins there you go we'll have one more clue for you most likely between the third and zone as again the leg of uh gabe placentia has been very impressive today yeah i mean he hits it it's it's like he's trying to hit field goals off on his kickoffs which is you know as a coach yeah just do that every time why wouldn't you coaches love that though when you have no threat of a return i mean we saw what can happen on a return in the first half first play of the game when san mateo took one back to the house well in fresno city has tim connor only back there so they're probably thinking the same thing absolutely we haven't heard much from connolly yet so far today he is in there right now he's split out wide in single coverage right now against ryan cooper jr of the bulldogs first and ten for fresno city from their own 25 and it's blanca's on a fly sweep from the wide out position gets forward for two yards but there is some laundry on the field and i believe the tight end there zane ricks is complaining so i think it's going to be a holding call on him it's probably going to drive the rams further back into their own territory he did he was talking to the ref about it too which is not necessarily something that the fresno city college coaching staff likes being that i play tied in here they like to go ahead and take care of that themselves you don't talk to the refs but rixel we'll learn that here's what i'll say about zane in defense of him he was doing it very politely very politely i'm sure he was using clean language as well thankfully moving back 10 yards so it's first and 20 now for the rams not the way they wanted to start this first series of the second half tubs up ended in the backfield and able to fall forward to the line of scrimmage second and 21 they're gonna give them a loss of one on the play they had the same fly sweep action as the first down play and they gave it to tubbs underneath um i understand you're trying to get some yardage back but at this point nothing's been happening in the interior i still believe in playing off the perimeter right now second and 21 from their own 14 holiday wings at the story completion and cathedral getting up field gets about half of the yardage back he's out to the 23. a little bit more of a manageable third down it's still going to be really long third and 12 but that's better than third and 21. correct and um i think you're at this point scott your playbook's a little limited on third and twelfth i mean we're looking probably a draw play a screen but everybody in coaching football knows that so maybe they do take a shot you want to be a little careful here you finally got this game down to a one score game you don't want to make a big mistake bad snap is fielded well by holiday he throws it towards his running back fred greene jr there was three bulldogs in holiday's face and don't really blame him for throwing that one a little low it hits the turf i don't know if green would have been able to get up field for more than a short game anyways so uh the rams are going to be punting here uh they go three and out on their opening series of the second half got off to a slow start in the first half and history is repeating itself yeah it definitely is and fred green definitely gave a non-verbal reaction as if he thought if that was put on his chest he was going to be able to do something might even be on pick up that first down um but you know frustrating times you just got to get over it you can't you can't show your emotion like that short punt is fielded on the run by jalen lampley showed his explosiveness earlier in this game with that kick return and he is tackled immediately by a couple of rams they're gonna start with good field position though the bulldogs will they're gonna mark it at their own 46 so they're near midfield for their opening violently by two guys at the 46 yard line of the bulldogs immediate and violent it's a bad combination that's typically what coach wright would want first intent for san mateo they're gonna give it to page running hard right into the middle of that fresno city defense he gets three delivers a blow and then goes down to the turf ram is a little slow to get up we do have someone down on the play page is a little more explosive than i thought he was in watching film scott he's he he's a bit he's you know we i found out from the staff that he was their their power guy but he's kind of some jump cuts and some explosiveness that i didn't really see on film myself and i'm going off of my own you know analysis of the film and also with the coaches that i talk to here at fresno city analyzing him as well and he's he's got a burst there is time on the field while they attend to the injured ram uh we're going to take a break as well 1714 san mateo 1308 left to go here in the third quarter you're listening to fresno city football on 940 kaino who is that let's take a half uh 30 seconds jorge i hope he's just cramping who is that do you know scott i haven't been able to get a number yet the injured ram was kaden ochoa the sophomore out of the bakersfield high school as he put on my questionnaire it's like the ohio state university i guess caden sophomore 61205 was able to jog off under his own power so looks like he might be okay second and six for the bulldogs at the 49 of the rams and that's paige again running over left tackle he picks up another three so back to back third three yard runs for paige is going to set up a third and four for the bulldogs it's a big thick kid back there in the background for san mateo in the backfield excuse me in regards to his legs his shoulders his arms i mean he's coming right at you third and four tight formation here for san mateo paige bouncing it outside has a little room looked like they might have gotten away with a little holding out there on the perimeter no flag down and paige gets past the stick he's got a first down as he picks up about six on the play so they'll move the chains and it'll be a first down at the ram 40. and uh not to bring it up scott but we're going to my pre-game comments in regards to the perimeter play they keep bouncing out to the perimeter and making yardage on fresno city college as i indicated that they may be able to do on both sides and they're doing it see when they go up the middle there's nothing there paige again the 5 8 207 pounder out of st francis high school in mountain view he's a sophomore he played some for the bulldogs in 2019 actually played well he gets two more yards on that carry they're really just pounding the football here to start the second half they are but i think if you notice and when they go in between the hashes against the rams there's not much doing there when he bounces it outside even paige who i heard was the power back i heard juwan evans was the the speed back here is evans on that carry that was nice and between the top finds a crease right up the gut give him seven yards on that play so they're keeping it on the ground and they're keeping the chains moving although this one comes up just short of a first down so it'll be third and one for the bulldogs they're back to the line of scrimmage in a hurry batari in shotgun he's got evans behind him they now look over to the sideline to get the audible to get the new call atari looks ready now takes the snap hands it off to evans evans runs into cuabena watts watson but he is able to keep the legs we got a little scuffle out here too scott up on top some extracurriculars deep in the ram secondary cooler heads would prevail there evan's uh able to keep the legs moving though after initial contact with watson and he drives forward for another first down for san mateo so the bulldogs are driving now into ram territory they've got the ball up to 28 10 43 left here in the third quarter 17 14 bulldogs over the rams here at radcliffe stadium the lights are on now pretty good crowd again maybe in the 500 to a thousand range seeing a good football game here today we got a competitive one for you first and ten batari play action swings it out to that tight end of his and he gets up field for another good gain seven yards on the completion [Music] ball he hit him right on the outside shoulder outside the numbers playing the perimeter all this entire game for both teams is a perimeter game spread them out you're you know you're into your seven on both defenses or your strength if you know me and i played offense and was an offensive coordinator uh you need to get him outside evans on second and four tries to go left side getting to the perimeter with that speed of he has three on the it's gonna be third and three for san mateo taking some time off the clock was that cabana that came out on the edge right there and made that tackle or who was that that was i didn't get a good look at it third and two for san mateo paige no he dropped the football and it's picked up by the rams and he's off and running although they're gonna mark it down keenan wolfe is putting his hand on his helmet right now because i think he picked it up with his knee on the ground so i think he's being gonna be marked down there that would have been an easy touchdown for fresno city if he hadn't put his knee to the ground but either way it's a turnover so the rams have the football they're gonna have it at their own 24 but for a minute there we thought they were going to take the lead well we've seen him do that before i mean he can he can run a little bit and um i thought he was gone but they did i credit the refs on that that did blow the whistle immediately and that's why he put his hand on himself keenan did not argue but i mean he had nothing but green grass in front of him uh i mean he was going to go 66 yards to the house if if his knee wasn't down so actually a break there for san mateo i know they turned it over but the fact that he was down is a little bit of a mini break all right the rams get the football they trail by three they got an opportunity to take the lead here after falling behind 14 nothing less than five minutes into this football game we got some crowd activity now scott i like to see it i don't like to see that if you're a fan of ram football as a run goes right up the gut for a loss ah no gain actually on the play so it'll be second and ten there hasn't there hasn't been any room at all all day all night in between the tackles i do understand the concepts of zach hollis offensive coordinator for fresno city college he he's gonna keep doing that to keep you honest but at some point you gotta sling it a little bit you gotta get it outside on the perimeter and you got to let justin's holiday try to do his thing to to take this game back over all right three receivers to the left holliday gonna throw going deep he's got connor lee behind the defense tim makes the catch at the 40. cuts it left side trying to make a move he's tackled inside the 30 down at about the 29 yard line of san mateo mike brady called for it and there it was the deep shot to tim connerly the rams are in business at the san mateo 27. coach hollis if you listen to this you know recording after this i'm not questioning you're running the ball in between the tackles but there it was right there and i think there may have been a setup on that sky like i said before that i think he's trying to keep him tight at some point when you get him out there tim connolly on the edge it's it's good night i actually thought he might break that when connerly has the football it's just it's so much fun to watch how fast he is with his cuts and everything else i mean if it if it hit him in stride that would have been a touchdown that would have been a house call correct all right the give on a fly sweep to shalit kinney the first time we've seen him today and he is tackled in the backfield by san mateo number 11 for the bulldogs and that kid i highlighted i highlighted that kid when you and i talked this week um damari damari what is his name damari blanks is a beast on film and he got out there so quick and he's so big i think he's like 235 pounds um he said welcome to the game yeah damari uh played running back in 2019 but as a linebacker this year three sacks six tackles for lost two forced fumbles those are some stats well they are rollins on a quick hitter right side where they set up a screen action and rollins able to get it down near the 20. good gain yeah it was gonna set up a third and three for fresno city fresno city on the move here trailing 17-14 just under seven minutes left to play in this football game again the rams fell behind early in this game 14-0 the opening kickoff was returned for a touchdown by the bulldogs and they scored on a completion of their tight end a short time later they actually led 14 nothing less than five minutes into this football game so the rams have found a way to fight back and they're gonna do a little trickery here sean kelly throwing it back to justin holiday it didn't pick up big yardage but it might have gotten the first down wow what an interesting play there scott they had sean kelly in this slot they ran him on a little fly sweep kind of action with a throwback to justin holiday and justin holiday caught it at the what 20 yard line got a few yards and and gained the first down great play that's the ex clovis east quarterback sean kelly now a wide receiver for fresno city college actually they didn't throw much at clovis c so i was actually kind of fun to watch sean kelly throw the football there wasn't bad it was a good ball i'm not gonna tell picked it at the numbers and went right up the sideline was gone i mean that's just unfortunate too bad too because he did have an open receiver there in the flat in rollins the pass was just a little high and it deflected off right into the arms of the defender san mateo makes it 37-20 bulldogs so after the rams took the lead 20 to 17 three unanswered touchdowns by college of san mateo they lead away probably a good decision they were going for a deep shot there that was surprising i get it though i get it on second and short i mean they're down by 18. if you're fresno city you're probably bringing a lot of pressure trying you know run pressure based on the fact that what you and i just said they're trying to run the ball and work some clock down why not take a shot maybe just make this not even something that fresno city has a chance to even think about doing third and two if the rams want to have any chance of coming back in this game they need to get a stop here they're bringing the blitz there's keenan wolf and san mateo picks up the first down a really nice throw from batari out to one of his tight ends that's number 83 kevin cielski out of the kings academy and sunnyvale they beat the blitz with a little throw out into the flat they ran play action great blitz scheme by the defense for fresno city college however better play call i think that almost might have been a run pass option um from a pistol set in which he once you saw that coming i'm going to go ahead and sling this out on an out route to my tight end and boom first down kind of surprised actually the bulldogs just snapped the ball with about 30 seconds left on the play clock um i figured they would be draining that one down they run it again pick up a another yard so it'll be second and nine well and to be honest with you you know in conjunction with that i think that then running that play the play before that with the rpo the run pass option i think that was surprising to me too i mean i you would figure that i think they're just running their offense they've been doing it all night anyways there's some coaches who think like that which you can't really blame them you know time and score doesn't always matter let's just keep doing what we do well approaching six minutes left to play now second and nine from their own 37. they're going to keep it on the ground not surprisingly and that's jaewon evans and he is stacked up for no gain who was that on that scott was that cabana yeah also saw in there on the play was the freshman defensive lineman okay abusium oh yeah in high school 6-1 230. he's also going to compete as a thrower in the spring apparently for fcc wow i was not aware of that that's great his game day superstitions by the way he watches reggie white highlights and he sings gospel music i love it what a weird diverse thing to have around the list on third and ten san mateo with a completion it is going to come up a little short of the first down so it looks like this rams defense is going to get off the field but the bulldogs do take some time off the clock so i think they got out of that drive what they really wanted they were able to get out of their own end zone the shadow of their own end zone from inside their own 10 to their own 44 and they took some time off the clock so the putting unit is on the field for san mateo they lead 38-20 under five minutes to play now in this football game by the way okay a bosum is listed at 2 30 on the roster that was him who just came in there and tried to blow up that punt i think maybe 3 30 it might it might be he's there's definitely a typo but he's athletic as well 230 pounds is definitely inaccurate all right the rams are going to take over here down 18. do they have a miracle in store for us mike i'm thinking that you're starting to get to uh trick play time maybe possibly and i don't mean to say that and it's terrible to say as a coach when you're down by 18 4 28 left from your own 25 i i don't i mean you're gonna need to start taking big shots they're not running the ball i think it's out of the question now first and ten from their 25. they swing it out to blancas blancas past the 30 a nice little move to avoid a tackler he picks up seven good little catch and run from aaron blancas out of selma high pretty awesome it's kind of like a outside swing screen with one tackle and i don't know who was on the outside at wide receiver but a stock blocking wide receiver and it actually worked out pretty decently yeah blanca's out of selma he averaged over 25 points per game as a junior in basketball so very good athlete holiday gonna throw actually it's a new quarterback in there for fresno city i just noticed junior garcia in there taking the snaps now that is junior hope everything's okay with justin holiday maybe just a change of pace junior the sophomore out of merced did play a little bit in 2019 very little got in on a few plays he played a little bit this year already as well in the opener we haven't seen him since then but he's getting some snaps here late against san mateo he's a big body 6'3 225 he picked up a few yards on that second down run they're gonna hand it off here to green and green into some open space past midfield and breaks the tackle he's inside the 40 the 30 he's gonna score ten five touchdown touchdown rams fred green jr taking it to the house it's 38-26 san mateo i'm uh assuming now you probably go for two here i'm assuming you go for two but they're bringing the field unit out i guess you could go for two after the next i think the charts usually say just go for the extra point here and coach kaveli likes to go off the charts you go for the one get the extra point do that later yeah i don't think it really matters when you go for two there's some coaches would argue why why ruin your momentum as well off the touchdown if you don't necessarily have to go for two right now which i can understand yeah i agree i can also understand the other side of going for two and that way you know one way or another what you have to do right at that point i agree i think i could see it both ways because when you go let's say you go for two on that you establish some momentum and some some something on the sideline to get them hyped up even more than they already are right now off of fred's run but at the same time if you don't get it what you just said you're crushed on the sideline and you lose all the momentum you just caught on a big run by fred how about that run by frank jr by the way the one thing i noticed on that we you talked about it earlier on one of his he puts his hand on the ground instead of going down he puts his hand on the ground he'll put he'll put the the non-ball side hand on the ground and keep his momentum and keep his balance and go and i don't think i think they were expecting him to go down i saw the safety at about the 23 yard line think that fred was going down and he put his hand down regained his balance and boom gone he's one of those guys when you're watching him run the football you're just assuming he's going down two or three times and then suddenly he stays on his feet again that's kind of like a barry sanders or ronnie rivers type of characteristic yeah because there's such a low center of gravity that they just have incredible balance and so i mean more than likely the rams are going to come up a little short here although it looks like we're going to see an onside kick but one positive is that you've got fred green jr now in that backfield i agree with you and i do like your analogy to our for our fresno audience in relationship to ronnie rivers it feels a lot here's the onside kick and it's recovered by one of the up men it's actually really good yeah nathan coons gave a little kind of a no-look deal patrick mahomes no look but it was with his uh foot and uh kicked it to the short side of the field actually or near the side of the field and a good play actually by the up man there for um for the bulldogs as he had a bunch of guys bearing down on him and he makes a a nice grab to control the football so san mateo will take over at the fresno city 46. they lead by 11. 38-27 303 left to play here in this football game i like how you said no look scott on that because he was looking right for the onside kick and pulled his right foot back across his body and kicked it left it's pretty cool didn't get it though san mateo going to keep it on the ground and pick up some good yardage again they've done a good job rushing rushing the football today yeah that's wanna evans well both of them i mean both their backs number seven and number eight they are impact players and they got actually that was another another guy right there scott yeah that was scott atkinson who's been in on the last couple drives spelling evans and paige atkinson looks like he's kind of the closer yeah totally brought in those fresh fresh legs i almost thought that was evans for a second he's got a similar look to him in the way he's running style atkinson gets it again avoids big number 95 for fresno city in the backfield that was jim kisslane who got some good penetration but atkinson was able to avoid him and he gets forward for another first down so the clock continues to move we're approaching two minutes now left to play here at radcliffe stadium looked promising for a while there in the third quarter when the rams came back from that early 14-0 deficit to take a 20 to 17 lead but 21 on answer points by the bulldogs ultimately is going to prove to be the difference in this football game the rams got off to a rough start were able to regroup but then the bulldogs took control late atkinson again that atkinson can run the ball right there too scott i mean where's another six seven yards right there um like you said the closer we talked about in the pre-game that there was a stable of running backs for fresno city college it looks like san mateo might have the same thing just a reminder fresno city college will be back at home next week hosting butte college 5 p.m kickoff for that game right here at ratcliffe stadium homecoming yeah then they'll have a bye uh and then after that the they will open up central valley conference play at cos on october 16th atkinson breaking another tackle in the backfield able to get forward for another yard or two that's the clock third it's now stopped as the fresno city sideline calls a timeout with 130 left to play i do like seeing the timeout and the stadium tonight looks like the college of san mateo is going to move to 4-0 on the season looks like the rams are gonna fall to three and one [Music] the bulldogs just grinding out the clock here on this last possession and they give it to atkinson one more time 123 left to play as the clock is stopped again and to be honest scott they they just like you said grinding out the clock these this whole line for san mateo we haven't talked about them enough but they got some big boys and they're just leaning on fresno city and despite the fact that i believe fresno city is really deep we've said in our earlier broadcasts in prior games it still gets tiring when you're going up against 330 pound guys when they're leaning on you all game it gets a little tiring at some point your legs are like hey you know what's going on here so yeah that old adage that they wear you down over the course of a football game that that run in the first quarter sets up that run in the fourth quarter right right especially when you got a back who's powerful like atkinson who's just putting his shoulders down yeah and driving forward right i completely agree with you and actually i don't you think that all three backs have been doing that especially paige i think i think paige has done that early on um jaywan evans is a little more elusive kind of puts his foot in the ground and and can can bounce outside but a little bit of that as well i mean they've been running between the tackles all game long no doubt about that they have they've at least been trying and i have to give fresno city credit early in the first half i said it on here on the commentary that they weren't doing anything but i think what's happening is now third in the second half this is what fresno city was been doing to people in the first few games for you and i we we discussed it they lean on people fresno city is now getting leaned on and they're feeling the fruits of their own what do you think the rams learn from a game like this um i think that you know i think i think there's a lot of things i think there's some things the coaching staff is analyzing in this too on fourth and one i think he's a little bulldogs go to a version of uh the wildcat there it looked like they might have had a running quarterback it was a tight formation and i think he's short fresno city is saying that they might be a little short and keenan wolfe is celebrating he thinks they're sure yeah they're definitely short i just saw where the ball is spotted so who knows there is a buck 18 left to play here they're down 11. probably need to get a touchdown here in the next 30 seconds somehow and onside kick after the two-pointer field who knows who knows i mean it's not entirely over we got a little action going on on the sideline a little a little little juice a little juice i mean at least you're you know there's so what you were asking me well there's some good takeaways from this game i mean they got you know like we just they got a stable running backs they you know we've got two quarterbacks they played again today they they've got depth they've got a lot of bodies my only issue is that you got to figure out the o line is getting a little depleted you know at some point junior garcia gonna throw he's back in there for this possession and he's got blancas for a nice pickup out near the 40-yard line that's a 20-yard gain for the selma high grad at some point you're just looking to get guys healthy um and the interior lines of both the offense and defensive line and san mateo had that san mateo has health and they're big and so you know when you get worn out in the trenches it's tough now the best thing about that play was that blanca's got out of bounds garcia to throw again escapes the pocket over the middle and it looks like it is complete to stanley oxford that's another first down 11 on the play clock stops with the first down while they move the chains garcia calling out the signals he's back at the line of scrimmage and he spikes it what a great catch by stanley oxford he dug that off the floor i don't know if he noticed that look like a monster you know picking up picking up a fly ball to shortstop you know and diving forward and getting it not surprised that oxford's a really good athlete he's related to a fresno city great earl charles the former running back who went on to marshall uh and then got a look with the new england patriots one of the best running backs in the history of fresno city football who was also from new york right and who i actually got to be involved with at fresno city called gerald charles was a guy here i was here um you know while he played and great guy garcia over the middle in and out of the hands ezra ezra got his first look right there ezra easley he's the transfer from uh he's a bounce back from eastern washington i'm interested in seeing this guy play he's had a couple hiccups at the beginning of the year to try to get on the field but um just went off the top of his hands interesting that garcia is in the game right now uh i it's a throwing situation right and so he's he's slinging it around a little bit might just might just be getting him some looks just in case something happens to holiday yeah they're trying to set up a screen here on second down and it's not going to work and unfortunately that's going to cost them some time on the clock they do call a timeout immediately with 44 seconds left to go was complete to nicholas harper he caught it in the backfield made a man miss and then tried to get forward he only got one yard on the plan and unfortunately at times like this he'd almost rather pass be incomplete than pick up one yard let's take a quick 30 second break again you're listening the ram players what their most interesting talent or unique talent was and uh junior's answer was my arm talent really that's a confident kid right there also says his favorite nfl player is josh allen and josh allen's got some arm talent that's for sure i think junior does too junior garcia is showing it right now second and ten after the spike garcia drops the football picks it up get rid of it junior that's a good decision right there he threw a shovel pass that went incomplete but that saved the ram some time some critical time i completely agree with you and i don't even think he intended that shovel pass to get to the running back it was just somewhere in the area i don't even want you to catch this because the clock's going to keep going he just threw it over his shoulder was it a bad snap there or did he just mishandle he mishandled it remember the rams have a new center in the game as well andrew wiens i had to leave now dante and numalulu has gotten some snaps at the center here we go third and ten garcia looking downfield not going to take off and run he's got to get out of bounds or get a first down he might have slid a little too early there because he's been marked short of the first down and so the clock is going to continue to run junior really needed to get out of bounds or get the first down there but what happens is they mark it from where you started the slide here's junior gonna throw a little flip pass that's really what he did and he pumped it maybe two or three times and said go out go out well i don't even think that was a design play you just flipped it over the defender and got the first down 14 seconds left so the rams need to score on this play if they want to have any chance because you're going to need to have enough time to get an onside kick and run one more play after that so this play would need to go to the end zone if you have any visions of winning it is first down at the 16 and san mateo is going to call a timeout yeah i think i think junior will learn a lesson from sliding there on that play because he could have gotten the first down or gotten out of bounds yeah i agree with you scott i i think you were calling it during the play that's why you're pl your play-by-play has been great scott i mean you were calling it during the play he should have gotten out of bounds he'll learn that and i there but there's no time to discuss that right now from zach hollis i mean it's just we'll talk about this in the in the video room tomorrow you know as a quarterback you're trained to slide right in those situations you don't want your quarterbacks taking hits that was one situation though where you know you don't realize that they mark it from where you started the slide right a lot of the time and uh so even though if you end up beyond the first down marker from wherever you start the slide that's where they mark it so it came up just short so it'll cost cost the rams some time but this is good experience for junior i think right here he's looking really good out there leading this two-minute drill he really is and this is the whole thing the whole issue they had during camp on this scott they had they got three four quarterbacks that they were looking at you know so i mean i don't think this is anything against junior uh excuse me against justin holiday but give junior a chance 14 seconds left it's first and ten for fresno city they trail by 11 38-27 they would need to get in the end zone on this play i think to have any chance garcia holding the ball now throwing towards the end zone and it is picked off near the goal line by san mateo and bringing it out the other way out past the 40 near midfield and now sliding down to the turf for san mateo is one of their db's and that will put it away fortunately he got hurt on the tackle the the san mateo defensive back is is slow to get up with the with the clock running to zero and that will do it yeah that ran out the one yeah oh it's listed as a running back you want to come back after this one sure after the after the next break okay fresno city college rams so for their first loss of the season here at ratcliffe stadium tonight they fall to the college of san mateo who came in ranked number two in the state in the sports information association poll number three in the coaches poll uh the rams came in ranked sixth in both of those polls and uh this was a very good football game very entertaining but i think when the rams look back on it mike brady um they're gonna regret that slow start the fact that this game started with a kickoff return for a touchdown by the bulldogs and then they're gonna regret how they played late in that third quarter when they took the lead i completely agree with you and i think what would hit here i mean they lost by 11 points so you come out and you're down seven nothing in the first eight seconds i mean that kid he's fast um but that put them in a position where now you're down i mean i just gave you a touchdown to start the game and it's really hard to recover from which they did surprisingly 20 to 17 in the third quarter and then it something shifted they started moving quick for san mateo and they surprisingly got out the front seven of fresno city college which earlier in the broadcast i was indicating would be the strength for fresno city i think there's some things they need to analyze and you were asking me that earlier i don't truly know what happened in there you know in the strength of their defense all right so those are a few of the negatives are there any positives to take out of this game there's some huge positives i i love the fact that you know the the running back core looks solid again they're healthy o-line looked good for for having to shuffle around they looked good i mean i i didn't have any big discrepancies with o-line based on the fact that you've got guys moving from guard to center and tackle to guard and guard back to tackle and tight ends in the guard i mean you know ryan was in there in h-back ryan hunt and they were just doing whatever they could try to do to just get justin some protection before junior came in i think that's a positive the defensively secondary i was surprised to see some things based on what you and i have seen um being the strength of the team they gave up a couple corner routes i don't know if there's something that san mateo saw on film that i didn't see i did tell you earlier in the broadcast uh i actually told you during this week on our phones that i believed the perimeters were going to be where the offenses were going to attack for both teams and it happened surprisingly the run came at the end of the game to just solidify it for for san mateo and that was surprising to me yeah the bulldogs are a good football team there's a reason they're ranked uh number two in one poll and number three in the other but this fresno city football team also a very good football team and they will have a chance to bounce back next week another home game they'll host butte college at 5 p.m the final non-conference game of the year 5 pm kickoff here at radcliffe stadium come out and root on the rams you get to see some high quality football butte a team uh also ranked in that top 25 poll in the state they gave college of san mateo a very good game last week only losing by a touchdown they will be in fresno next week to battle the rams after that uh this team the rams will have a bye week after that and then on october 16th they will open conference play at cos uh a 1 p.m kickoff for that one and then they will get into conference play sacramento city after that modesto west hills and then finishing off the regular season with ridley college on give them a seven point cushion right out of the gates it's always a difficult thing to do against college or san mateo who last week was number one in the state this week was number three in the state something that's hard to come back from surprisingly for scott bemis and i you did come back and we're up 2017 in the third quarter and had the pick six and had some other issues that are just hard to come back from and in your opinion was there something that that occurred on special teams on the opening kickoff that could have been corrected was there a misassignment in terms of coming down on the rush or uh did it just occur because of the talent of the return man for san mateo [Music] yeah what what do you think happened there in the third quarter too coach uh it seemed like uh the bulldogs really got that passing game working and you know obviously they got a talented quarterback and they got a talented receiver in in star in macy's mason starling uh it seemed like they found something in your defense huh laughs well we are you know broadcasting the games on youtube now coach so maybe coach's challenges aren't too far away in the future yeah the coach that's funny you bring that up because we actually thought the same thing from up here i said we thought we were saying keenan was off to the races there was also another play on their sideline a catch by one of their wide receivers that we actually i mean we're on the other side of the field for the broadcast booth but we actually thought the wide receiver was out of bounds they called him inbounds for a college of san mateo let's recap the scoring for you real quick and then uh we'll give you a bemus's best play of the day uh this game got started right away with a touchdown it came courtesy of jalen lampley of the bulldogs a 95-plus yard kickoff return for a score on the opening kickoff of the game uh it put the rams an immediate hole 7-nothing later in the quarter in fact the next time that the bulldogs got the football uh they punched it in again this time courtesy of a luke batari to tight end anthony landsphere 20-yard td that made it 14-0 and we were just over four minutes into this football game now the rams would come back they showed um some metal in this one to fight back against the team as good as as the bulldogs in the second quarter justin holiday a one-yard touchdown run that made it 14-7 san mateo then got a field goal to make it 17-7 but then it was hall day again another one-yard touchdown run um he came into this game of course uh with four rushing tds so now he's got six on the season through four games also has four throwing touchdowns as well that made it 17-14 and that was the score as we went to the locker rooms in the second half the rams actually took a lead at some point after that fumble uh recovery by keenan wolfe where it looked like he might be able to take it back all the way to the house but they ruled that he was down the ramps did finish off a drive justin holiday to jabari rollins the extra point was no good though so it was 2017 fresno city and it looked like the rams might be pulling off a big win here tonight at radcliff but unfortunately the bulldogs would answer and they would answer uh with force uh luke batari uh to uh mason starling 22-yard td that made it 24-20 early in the fourth then it was batari to mason starling again looked like an instant replay a deep corner out as mike mentioned 3120 csm at that point and then a pick six off a deflected football uh off the arm of justin holiday was looking for rollins it got deflected it went back the other way that made it 38-20 and that was pretty much it was pretty much over at that point but the rams did produce one more big time highlight after that and it came courtesy of fred green jr the running back and that is our bemis's best play of the game spread [Music] now the rams would actually get the football back a couple more times and uh we're driving uh on the final play of the game which was an interception so they almost made it a little closer but in the end the rams fall by a final score of 38 to 27. again one more reminder this rams football team will be back at home right back here at radcliff stadium next saturday night another home game uh they host butte college at 5 pm butte another very good team obviously from northern and we just heard it in the interview with coach kaveli that it was necessarily they didn't play bad i mean san mateo last week was number one in the state number three in the state this week you got mason starley he just indicated to us right now which you and i talked about on the broadcast who's six foot four dan brown the the uh secondary coach for fresno city college indicated to me that that was a guy that he had his eye on and he actually told me that he's six foot five so got a six foot five wide receiver going to the fade or to the corner route to the back pylon i mean it's not too hard to hit that target when you're going against six foot and under defensive backs just throw it high let him go up and get it dan brown was concerned about him and he became a legitimate concern he had two two touchdowns and i believe all in the third quarter correct i believe both all in the third quarter and just it places an emphasis on on your secondary of trying to look at this guy you've got to move a safety over it opens up other things you got to go drop guys back we talked about maybe seeing cover four and the fourth quarter and then they just started smashing the football they just started running against them because now you're worried about starling and you can't do anything you're on your heels you know and and they just they took it to him at the end great run by fred um and i and his fred green jr was everybody's excited to see him on the field i mean they've been talking about him all camp great run by him to try to do something get it within 11 points but i think at that point it was too late yeah very entertaining football game though here at radcliffe stadium tonight and uh who knows you know the good news here is this wasn't a conference game uh for the rams so uh they are still undefeated in conference they haven't played a conference game yet but if you can win your conference they will get an automatic bid into the the norcal playoffs and who knows maybe they will see the bulldogs once again down the road and maybe they'll learn some things and maybe the outcome might be a little different the next time around by the way that's 19 straight regular season wins for the college of san mateo by by my count so uh wow tim tulik has got it going he does at csm and you know coach c he's had it going for a long time here at fresno city and our next chance to see them will be next saturday against butte college 5 p.m kickoff for that one please uh make plans to join us uh either here at the stadium or at home listening on the kaino internet page or on 9 40 a.m on the radio we will get our coverage started at 4 45 with fresno city and butte college all right that's going to do it from ratcliffe stadium final score once again uh 3827 csm
