yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ for it says in scripture behold I am laying a stone in Zion a cornerstone chosen and precious and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame therefore its value is for you who have faith but for those without faith the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone and a stone that will make people stumble in Iraq that will make them fall they stumble by disobeying the word as is their destiny you are a chosen race a royal priesthood a in God have faith also in me in my father's house there are many dwelling places if there were not what I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place for you I will come back again and take you to myself so that where I am you also may be where I am going you know the way Thomas said to him master we do not know where you are going how can we know the way Jesus said to him I am the way and the truth and the life no one comes to the Father except through me if you know me then you will also know my father from now on you do know him and have seen him Philip said to him master show us the father and that will be enough for us jesus said to him have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me for whoever has seen me has seen the father how can you say say show us the father do you not believe that I am in the father and the father is in me the word said I speak to you I do not speak on my own the father who dwells in me is doing his works believe me that I am in the father and the father is in me or else believe because of the works themselves amen amen I say to you whoever believes in me will do the works that I do I will do greater ones than these because I am going to the Father verbum Domini [Music] a blessed and happy Mother's Day to all of you dear mothers out there and a blessed repose to those mothers whom we've lost in in to eternal life and consolation to you if you've lost your mother this past year and we know that we have hope in the Lord who has truly risen from the dead and that we will be reunited with our loved ones you know this past March just as a coronavirus crisis was hitting I was back in Iowa with my own mother and father happy Mother's Day mom and I was speaking at it's actually the parish where I was baptized Nativity Catholic Church in Dubuque Iowa and two of the people who were there is my first cousin Becky and her husband Keith who was involved in construction all of his life and I asked them to show me the merry garden the rosary garden that they had constructed with the pastor's permission encouragement a beautiful place where they have basically the Rosary laid out and concrete's beautiful statue of Our Lady and then they have flowers now the flowers were not in bloom yet but they've planted flowers and they will be soon and it's a beautiful thing to do to have a sacred space places where we can pray places where we can encounter something of God's beauty our own head of the religious catalogue' Dorothy was telling me that we're receiving many orders achieve really thinks people who are confined to their homes are having little sacred places now that they're creating in their homes where they can go where they can pray and that's a beautiful thing to do I wanted to begin with my thoughts today my homily today to speak about Mary Gardens it's an article this last week in Catholic news in our own Catholic news talking about Mary Gardens it's a good idea perhaps it's something you want to think about during this spring to have a holy place which is a Mary Garden this is something that goes back centuries way back in the Middle Ages that there would be different flowers that would be associated with Our Lady were in the month of May and we know that our Holy Father has encouraged families to pray the family rosary I had some have some just moving memories of praying with families or family rosary I remember going to one family near here and was invited to dinner was one of the other Friars and after dinner right there at the dinner table they took out their rosaries and each of their I think four children and one of the parents would lead one of the decades and each child had its own particular intention for that particular decade whether it was for a relative who was ill for peace or something like that and it was just a beautiful way in which these children these young people could enter into the Rosary they could lead the rosary they could have their own particular intention for that decade I remember another family I went to and they had some very little toddlers and they had a basket of rosaries and so when it came time to pray the rosary in the family room the toddlers would take out the basket and they'd hand out the rosaries pass them around to the other children and then they would pray the rosary together another family where the they could live boys and there was all boys and the boys could lead the decade in either English or Latin and they were quite proud of the fact that they could pray you know the Hail Mary and Latin so some of them with and Latin but just beautiful way in which this beautiful prayer this sweet prayer in which we experience Mary's presence and she helps us that it's a beautiful thing that as father Patrick Payton would say the family that prays together stays together how true that is and so after the mass today we're going to be having the Holy Rosary we encourage you to join us all during this month in praying the Holy Rosary you are our family as Mother Angelica would often say and we're going to have also as part of this rosary immediately after the mass we're going to have the may crowning of this beautiful Fatima statue of Our Lady so James who many of you know who serves and reads here so often his wife Kay and his daughter Jenny are here and janae is going to be doing the crowning as we sing a beautiful hymn to Our Lady that I think many of you are familiar with during these crowning ceremonies we have some beautiful roses here in a chapel today so in a Mary garden if you wanted to create a Mary garden you have this beautiful statue of Our Lady and then you have different roses or different flowers associated with Our Lady so the Rose is one we say in the litany of Loreto we call her the mystical Rose the Rose is for many they would say the most beautiful flowers it is like the heart and we can think of when we look at the shape of a rose and the beauty of a rose the beauty of a pure heart like the heart of Mary so roses are important they have in your Mary garden another flower you may want to have named for our lady are marigolds marigolds are easy to grow I grow them in my own garden and their gold color reflects Mary's glory something of her glory now in heaven periwinkles they're one of the rare blue flowers and so that blue color is often associated with our lady and periwinkles is something that you could grow in your garden or so a lily called the madonna lily when you see the Easter lilies that we had earlier in this season venerable bead who lived in the eighth century it was a Benedictine monk he talked about the madonna lily and he said the lily though the petals show to us symbolized mary's purity and then you know those those are gold anthers in the center that they should kind of shed as it goes on an age that gold represents now the purity the beauty of her soul so those are some of the things that you could add to your merry garden you could have some herbs to name for early like rosemary a sweet smelling herb there's a legend that Mary would put the infant Jesus's clothes to dry on rosemary and lavender to legend but that herb is associated also with our lady so a beautiful idea something that could be a prayerful place I've created in my own garden also a place where there's a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes and she's surrounded by this beautiful bamboo and I have a rosebush in front of her and a statue of Saint Bernadette and it's just a place where you can enter into God's creation and a place where you can have some devotion and some prayer now let's talk today also about our readings today the beautiful readings we often hear this gospel today as one of the choices that we can have had funerals to give us heart and give us hope and so jesus said to his disciples do not let your hearts be troubled you have faith in God have faith also in me and my father's house there are many dwelling places and he's goes on to say that he's gone to prepare a place for us and he's going to take us to be where he is now it's interesting that Jesus speaks about the father's house earlier in John's Gospel when does he speak about the father's house John chapter 2 so he goes into the temple area and there there's this selling and all of this going on and he clean cleanses the temple and he says do not turn my father's house into a marketplace my father's house is a house of prayer so here the temple the physical temple on earth was a place of God's presence and the Lord defended that reality he calls it his father's house but then he says something interesting he says destroy this temple and in three days I will rebuild it they said how can you rebuild this it took 46 years to do this but later John tells us that when Jesus rose from the dead the disciples remember that word the Lord had said and that he was speaking about his own body and so now his body is that new temple his body is that point in which all of humanity comes to dwell with the father comes into God's presence it's his body his glorified humanity now is that point of contact the living temple that living stones so Saint Peter spoke about Jesus as the cornerstone but he said that he's a living stone so he's a living stone he's not just the stone of that old temple which was not alive but he's this living stone but then we're being built into this temple as living stones as well and so it is this spiritual reality that it is with Christ than that we are coming to dwell into this communion with God this divine communion you know it's said that often in other religions they speak of earthly pleasures and so on as that's what's going to be the Bliss of heaven but for Christianity we understand that is something much deeper than any earthly pleasure that we might experience in this life that is something that our hearts most deeply longed for Union and communion with God and it is the word who became flesh and dwelt among us who went to his passion death and resurrection who becomes that cornerstone in which were being built to come to this union this communion with the Blessed Trinity forever in heaven and so indeed we can take to heart their Lord's words when he says do not let your hearts be troubled I've gone to prepare a place for you and if I've gone to prepare a place for you I will come back and take you to myself that where I am you also may be and we think also of how he said in Matthew's Gospel you know that there's a way that's why that leads to destruction but there's a way that's narrow that leads to life and what does he say in today's Gospel I am the way so he is that way who's leading us to eternal life he is the truth not just partial truth not just some of the truth he is the essence of truth of reality the way things are both in this life in the life to come and he is the life he is that one who leads us to the shores of eternal life and brings us into eternal life there's no more weeping and crying no more tearing tears or pain no more death because it's been conquered by his glorious resurrection so my dear people there are many reasons for us to have heart and to have hope let yourself st. Peter says be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ so you are holy priests by baptism you enter into that spiritual priesthood in virtue of a bath baptism I have been ordained to the ministerial priesthood so I renew that that renewal of the sacrifice of Christ happens on the altar through my hands but what do I say at the offertory prayer brethren that my sacrifice and yours will be acceptable to God the Almighty father what does st. Peter's say to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ and the Catechism speaks about this now what are we what are you to bring as your spiritual sacrifices as this holy priesthood and virtue of your baptism the spiritual sacrifices you are to offer are your life your striving the sufferings the challenges you're going through right now but also your love your whole life bring that to the Lord of the offertory offer that spiritual sacrifice together with the perfect sacrifice of Jesus and what does he say acceptable to God through Jesus Christ so we thank the Lord for the sweetness of Mary who had no obstacles to the work of redemption in her life that's why we honor her that's why we look to her because she is especially that one who leads us in living more perfectly that spiritual priesthood living out that life of virtue of holiness that was so exemplified in her may marry the mystical rose pray for us in this month and pray for us as we pray the Holy Rosary one final point that I just like to mention as well so we have these beautiful roses here and I was thinking yesterday that perhaps you'd like to have some roses to present to our lady - we'd like to put them here love to see just lots of roses here for our lady but if you do decide to send us roses which we'll be happy to put here in front of the statue of Our Lady that each rose that you send be connected to a rosary you set so when our lady gave the franciscan crown' rosaries of franciscan crown' rosary is a rosary that Franciscans typically wear she said to the friar who was disappointed he could no longer bring her physical flowers she said well there's a better crown you can give me and it's a crown of my seven joys and so yes we want to have beautiful flowers but even more to pray that rosary rosarium which means garden of roses a rose garden and these are spiritual gifts spiritual roses spiritual bouquets that we offer to our lady asking for her intercession I believe in one God the Father Almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God born of the father before all ages God from God light from light true God from True God begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father he will come again in glory to judge the living in the dead and his kingdom will have no end I believe in the Holy Spirit the Lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son what the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the Dead and the life of the world to come amen the father gave his son to marry so that the world would receive him through her therefore we ask that she intercede for us now as we offer the following petitions the intentions of all who turn to e to begin with their spiritual and temporal needs in these challenging times especially those were serious matters of health finances and tragic family losses that the grace is flowing from this Holy Mass may bring them both consolation and divine assistance we pray to the Lord that the leaders and nations may work together to improve the log of the poor and the marginalized of the world we prayed to the Lord and Thanksgiving for the beauty of creation may the work of man not just figure it but enhances for the greater glory of God we pray to the Lord for those who are seriously ill that they will have courage and Christian hope we pray to the Lord that those who have died may enter into the banquet of life promised at that baptism we pray to the Lord father of mercy you gave us Mary to be a model of humility docility and holiness in her we find an advocate and above all a mother who ice leads us to Jesus Mike her help us to be humble of heart docile to your will and clothed in the garment of holiness through Christ our Lord [Music] [Music] pray brethren that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty father Oh God who by the wonderful exchange affected in this sacrifice have made us partakers of the one supreme Godhead grant we pray that as we have come to know your truth we may make it ours by a worthy Way of life through Christ be with you let us give thanks to the Lord our God it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you O Lord but in this time above all to laud you yet more gloriously when Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for with the old order destroy our universe cast down is renewed and integrity of life is restored to us in Christ the herefore overcome with Paschal joy every land every people like soul to hid nor praise and even the heavenly powers with the angelic hosts sing together the unending hymn of your glory as a hook [Music] you are indeed holy O Lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you entering from it for this is the chalice of My Blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you Lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit remember Lord your church spread throughout the world and bring it to the fullness of charity encyclical on the mercy of God titled deivis and misericórdia that is rich in mercy Pope Saint John Paul the second states the following quote the parable of the prodigal son found in chapter 15 of st. Luke's Gospel expresses in a simple but profound way the reality of conversion conversion is the most concrete expression of the working of love and of the presence of mercy in the human world and the church professing mercy and remaining always faithful to it has the right and the duty to call upon the mercy of God indeed the church must profess and proclaim God's mercy in all its truth as it has been handed down to us by divine revelation in quote this then my friends is the heart of the message of God's mercy the possibility of one's conversion and acceptance of God's love and forgiveness and the church's right as the Bride of Christ to proclaim these to the modern world remember God is always calling us to communion with himself and is even willing to meet each person where they are in the life of faith so respond with your intellect and your will to God's merciful desire to have a relationship with you and become enamored with the wonders of his mercy god bless you and thanks for watching EWTN and this segment of the wonders of His mercy [Music] [Music] [Music] boys [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] his Holiness Pope Francis has encouraged all the faithful to pray the rosary at home with their families during this month of May a month begun in the United States and Canada by the consecration of our nation's to the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of the church therefore every day during the month of May after the live daily Mass EWTN will televise a rosary so that United in prayer we all may ask Mary health of the sick to assist us who fly to her protection we will begin and conclude our rosary with prayers our Holy Father has encouraged us to pray in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit Oh Mary you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope we entrust ourselves to you health of the sick who had the foot of the cross reunited with Jesus suffering and persevered in your faith protectress of the Roman people you know our needs and we know that you will provide so that as I Cana in Galilee joy and celebration may return after this time of trial help us mother of divine love to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us for he took upon himself our suffering and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us through the cross to the joy of the resurrection amen we fly to your protection the Holy Mother of God do not despise missions in our necessities so there were us always from every danger all glorious and Blessed Virgin amen the Glorious Mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary I believe in God the Father Almighty Creator of heaven and earth and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the Virgin Mary suffered under Pontius Pilate was crucified died and was buried he descended into hell on the third day he rose again from the dead he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty from there he will come to judge the living and the dead I believe in the holy spirit remembering with great hope that God is our Father our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for greater faith hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus for certain hope hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus pour fervent charity hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus and that our lives like Mary's may redound to the glory of God glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit the first glorious mystery the resurrection the fruit of this mystery is faith from the Prophet Hosea come let us return to the Lord for he has torn that he may heal us he has stricken and he will bind us up after two days he will revive us on the third day he will raise us up that we may live before him let us know let us press on to know the Lord is going forth as sure as the dawn from the Gospel of st.
