Faustina saint john paul ii [Music] [Music] [Music] the Lord be with you a reading from the holy Gospel according to John on the evening of that first day of the week when the doors were locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them peace be with you when he had said this he showed them his hands and his side the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord jesus said to them again peace be with you as the father has sent me so I send you and when he had said this he breathed on them and said to them receive the Holy Spirit who sins you forgive are forgiven them and whose sins you retain are retained Thomas called didymus one of the twelve was not with them when Jesus came so the other disciples said to him we have seen the Lord but he said to them unless I see the mark of the nails and his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side I will not believe now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them Jesus came although the doors were locked and stood in their midst and said peace be with you then he said to Thomas put your finger here and see my hands and bring your hand and put it into my side and do not be unbelieving but believe Thomas answered and said to him my Lord and my god jesus said to him have you come to believe because you have seen me blessed are those who have not seen and have believed now Jesus did many other signs and the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book but these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God and that through this belief you may have life and is the gospel of the Lord today is Divine Mercy Sunday and for the holy hour here the three o'clock hour during our time zone we have the gospel from today from this morning's Mass the Sunday Mass from John chapter 20 we're told that the doors were locked for fear of the Jews with their Judean people and the South apostles were and from the tribe of Judah and south southern part southern part of the kingdom the the Apostles are from Galilee so there's a animosity between the north and the south and they have this fear and they're locked because Jesus has been crucified in the city the capital city of Judah now Jesus comes in the midst of all this real tangible fear and says peace to you peace be with you and he showed them his hands and his side he tells him twice to have this peace and peace ultimately is a fruit of reconciliation with God it's a fruit of being converted to the Lord of turning from our sin our selfishness being trapped within ourselves and belonging to the Lord having faith in him receiving his life turning away from sin and clinging to God this is always seeing the prodigal son that he returns to the father's house he leaves the far-off country where he had lost sight of his sonship that he was truly a son of his father he lost that dignity in his mind and the father's mind of course he has any returns the father runs to greet him and it's a beautiful parable of the mercy of God it expresses God's mercy towards us so the father receives the prodigal son back into his house and the son is awakened a reminded of his dignity as being a son of the father that no behavior can destroy that that's always his identity that he's son of his father and that's what mercy does for us it doesn't humiliate us who doesn't leave us down it offers us forgiveness and picks us up and empowers us to return to God the Father even you know our conversions is a working of God's grace it's a work of God's mercy for us the father could have sent him injustice to the back 40 so to speak to work off that debt and to work like a common laborer that's what the son was expecting but he killed the fatted calf welcomed him back into the home and he knew that peace again being in the father's house so mercy when we experienced that mercy that forgiveness that restoration to being children of God you know by His grace we know this new piece as Catholics we have the the beautiful sacrament of reconciliation and we believe that this passage is the institution of that sacrament he tells them you know he says peace be with you as a father sent me so I send you and as he's saying this he breathes on them and says received the Holy Spirit who sends you forgive are forgiven them who sins you retain are retained that he gives us divine power this divine authority to forgive sins he shares it gives it the authority to the Apostles and he sends them out you know to it be this administer this minister to administer this mercy you know to bring about this reconciliation the Catechism when speaking about confession it says the spiritual effects of the Sacrament of Penance our reconciliation with God by which the penitent recovers grace reconciliation with the church the remission of the eternal punishment incurred by mortal sins that we must confess all our mortal sins are serious sins and the remission in part at least of temporal punishment resulting from you know that distortion that penalty that wound that sin leaves in us that attachment to sin that attachment to this world it can be temporal punishment due to sin could be thought of in that way there's a healing that takes place at least in part were taught by the Catechism and that peace and serenity of conscience and spiritual consolation are given to us and the spiritual strength to overcome sins in the future so that's a beautiful sacrament of peace that I can know I can have that assurance I'm forgiving these sins that they're cast behind God's back that I've received His mercy some quotes from the diary of divine mercy by st. Faustina received from our Lord she writes in the diary about this she says write this for the benefit of distressed souls when a soul sees and realizes the gravity of its sins when the whole abyss of the misery into which it is immersed itself is displayed before its eyes let it not despair but with trust let it throw itself into the arms of my mercy as a child into the arms of its beloved mother these souls have a right of priority to my compassionate heart they have first access to my mercy tell them that no soul that has called upon my mercy has been disappointed or brought to shame I delight particularly in a soul which has placed its trust in my goodness if you hear anything in this 10-minute talk hear that that no matter what your sins are though they be scarlet if you trust in His mercy you will be forgiven and that's why he suffered and died for us offer us that forgiveness of sins he goes on tell souls not to place within their own hearts obstacles to my mercy which so greatly wants to act within them my mercy works in all those hearts which opened the doors to it both the sinner and the righteous person have need of my mercy conversion as well as perseverance is a grace of my mercy you know that anyone who gets to heaven is by the blood of the Lamb who've been washed clean and his through his blood of sacrifice on the cross some people stay away from church they feel like they they're not good enough to come to church and that's ridiculous we're all sinners we're all in need of God's mercy and His grace and we can say the bigger the sinner has an even a greater right to the mercy of God and any turning to that mercy jiva Jesus will certainly lavish it upon us and the challenge for us is like what Thomas the challenge to Thomas is to have faith the first step is to have a simple faith in Jesus Christ this is the beginning of eternal life the sacraments perfected bring it to a fullness but he tells us in the scriptures john 6 chapter 14 that everyone who believes in him should have eternal life you know council of trent taught this that faith is the beginning of that eternal life and we need to cultivate that and to foster it thomas when he does see the wounds and touch them he says my Lord and my god in this these two words are the most common words used for God in the Old Testament that he's come to recognize the divinity of Christ and we could say that those glorified wounds that he has now gives testimony to his suffering death and resurrection in this Paschal mystery is the revelation of God's mercy towards us to see that what he has done for us what he has gone through how he has suffered for us and that he rose from the dead for us that love is present in the war a world of sin and death a fallen world the love of God is present through the Incarnation and through that Paschal mystery and that Jesus has solidarity with us he took upon himself our sins he redeemed us John Paul the second said mercy is love's second name mercy is love second name it restores us to value that yes this Paschal mystery satisfies God's justice as Paul tells us he was made to be sin that he experienced in himself the penalty due to sin that separation from God his anguish on the cross crying out to him why have you forsaken me he experienced that agonizing separation in himself and that sacrifice more than pays the debt of sin it satisfies God's justice in a super abundant way that mercy is a super abundance of justice goes beyond it because that is more than satisfies to whatever sin we could possibly commit his mercy bends down to our misery of sin and death whatever a tomb that we find ourselves in it might be loss or health problems whatever struggles economic struggles or sickness whatever it is that we feel trapped in you know he has entered into that tomb in our life and given us the power of that resurrection to bring us out of that tomb that we may know the fullness of life that we may know the fullness of sonship in this restoration this mercy allows us to participate in redemption that we're just not receiving but we also participate in offering up our own cross and sufferings for our redemption and the redemption of others you can see the great dignity that mercy preserves in that relationship not just passive receptors but we participate in our own redemption in the cross in sufferings and offered up for others a big part of the gospel today is they're being sent you know as the father has sent me so I send you you know he finishes the the Gospel by saying that this belief you may have in his name you know the you are going spread this faith that those who believe can have this life and his name and that's the mission of the church that God can draw good from whatever difficulties struggle cross that we have it can be part of the redemption of the whole world and to spread his mercy to everyone [Music] [Music] [Music] merci gushing forth from the bosom of
