THE PARABLE OF THE FIGURE TREE IS MEANT TO TEACH US WHAT REPENTANCE LOOKS LIKE IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE. WITHOUT REPENTANCE, A SOUL WITHERS AND DIES AND RISKS HELL, FIRE, AND DAMNATION. LIKE THE FIGURE TREE THAT IS NOT PLANTED IN THE PROPER ORCHARD, AND THE FIGURE TREE THAT IS CULTIVATED AND NOURISHED AND FERTILIZED, A SOUL NOT PLANTED AND ROOTED IN THE LIFE OF GRACE WILL NOT PRODUCE FRUIT, WILL NOT PRODUCE ABUNDANCE. THIS PARABLE TEACHES US OF THE NECESSITY TO REMAIN IN FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD. AND THE CONSEQUENCES, IF WE DO NOT REMAIN IN FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD THERE ARE ALWAYS CONSEQUENCES TO OUR ACTSES, SINS -- ACTIONS, SINS AND OUR FAILURES. REPENTANCE IS WHAT BRINGS US CLOSER TO GOD AND AWAY FROM OUR SIN. SO, GOD THE CHRIST ASSUMES A HUMAN NATURE IN EVERYTHING BUT SIN IN ORDER TO RECONCILE US TO THE FATHER. AND TO MODEL FOR US WHAT FRIENDSHIP SEND UNION WITH GOD LOOK LIKE. I MIGHT REMIND YOU THAT HIS LIFE WAS FILLED WITH REJECTION, ABANDONMENT, EVEN FROM THOSE WHO ARE CLOSEST TO HIM. AND HIS FOOTPRINTS TO THE CROSS, THE WAY OF THE CROSS WERE NOT PRETTY FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND. THEY WERE BLOODY. AND THAT'S WHAT FRIENDSHIP WITH CHRIST SOMETIMES LOOKS LIKE, DOESN'T IT? IT'S NOT ALL NICE AND PRETTY, BUT IT INVOLVES A LIFE OF HEROISM, A LIFE OF SELF DENIAL, A LIFE OF SACRIFICE. IN THE OUR FATHER, THE LORD GOES TO THE HEART OF WHAT UNION AND FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD WILL REQUIRE. FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? WE'RE ASKING THE FATHER, IN EFFECT TO FORGIVE US ONLY AS MUCH AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US. WOW. IF THAT DOESN'T RATTLE YOU. WE'RE ASKING GOD ONLY TO FORGIVE US AS MUCH AS WE FORGIVE. AND HOW MUCH DO WE FORGIVE? HOW MUCH DO WE TURN TO GOD. REPENTANCE IS TO THE CHRISTIAN AS HEALTHY AS FERTILIZED SOIL IS TO AN ORCHARD. WITHOUT SINCERE AND HEARTFELT REPENTANCE OF ONES SINS AND FAILINGS, A CHRISTIAN IS LIFELESS, CUT OFF FROM THE LIFE OF GRACE, GOD'S OWN LIFE DWELLING WITHIN US. AND TO BE CLEAR, WHEN WE REPENT OF OUR SINS, IT IS A GRACE FROM GOD. REPENTANCE IS ALWAYS A GRACE. A DISTINCTION CAN BE MADE OF ACTUAL GRACE AND SANCTIFYING GRACE. WHEN A PERSON IS NOT IN FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD, THAT IS NOT THE STATE OF GRACE, THE STATE OF SANCTIFYING GRACE. BUT WHEN ACTUAL GRACE IS GIVEN. WHEN A PERSON RESPONDS TO GRACE, ACTUAL GRACE TO BRING HIM OR HER BACK INTO THE STATE OF GRACE, THIS IS WHAT BRINGS ABOUT ACTUAL GRACE. IN OTHER WORDS, THE GRACE THAT BRINGS A SINNER TO REPENTANCE WHEN PERHAPS A PERSON IS NOT IN A STATE OF GRACE IS ACTUAL GRACE. WHENEVER SOMEBODY REPENTS, WHENEVER A SINNER APPROACHES THE CONFESSIONAL AND REPENTS OF HIS OR HER SINS, THAT IS A GRACE. THEY MAY NOT BE IN A STATE OF GRACE AND FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD WHEN THEY APPROACH THE CONFESSIONAL BUT IT'S STILL A GRACE THAT DRAWS THEM THERE. IT'S NOTHING OF REALLY THEMSELF THAT THEY CONCOCTED. IT'S A GRACE THAT THEY HAD BEEN COOPERATING WITH AND ANSWERED. WE HAVE THE FREEDOM TO SAY NO TO ACTUAL GRACE. HOW OFTEN DOES THE LORD GIVE US ACTUAL GRACES? ALL THE TIME! ALL THE TIME. DO WE RECOGNIZE THE ACTUAL GRACES THAT OUR LORD GIVES US IN OUR LIFE, OUR DAILY LIFE? ARE WE PLUGGED INTO THE LIFE OF GRACE TO BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE GRACE AT WORK. IT'S KIND OF LIKE TWO MAGNETS, CLOSE TO ONE ANOTHER. THE CLOSER THE MAGNETS GET TO ONE ANOTHER, THE NAG NETTIVITY, IT PULLS THEM TOGETHER. BUT THE FURTHER THEY GET AWAY FROM THE MAGNETTIVITY, THERE'S NOT THAT FORCE. WE WANT TO BE CLOSER AND CLOSER TO OUR LORD SO THAT WE MAY RECOGNIZE HIM AT WORK IN OUR LIVES. ULTIMATELY, TO BE IN UNION WITH HIM AND IN FRIENDSHIP WITH HIM. IF WE RESPOND AND TURN AWAY FROM SIN AND REPENT WHOLE-HEARTEDLY, GOD RETURNS US TO FRIENDSHIP WITH HIMSELF. AND THE MERE RECOGNITION THAT WE NEED TO REPENT AGAIN IS A GRACE IN ITSELF. JUST TO RECOGNIZE THAT, I HAVE DONE SOMETHING WRONG, I AM AWAY FROM GOD. WHETHER IT'S SERIOUS SIN OR EVEN SMALLER SIN. JUST THE MERE RECOGNITION OF SOMETHING THAT IS GOING ON WHICH IS IMPEDING THE LIFE OF GRACE IN MY LIFE. JUST THAT RECOGNITION IS AN ACTUAL GRACE THAT GOD HAS GIVEN TO ME, TO RECOGNIZE THAT. GOD NEVER INTENDS FOR US TO BE SEPARATED FROM HIM. HE'S ALWAYS GOING THE EXTRA MILE. HE'S ALWAYS REACHING OUT TO GRAB US, FROM FALLING OFF THE CLIFF. HE'S REACHING OUT TO THE ONE SHEEP WHO HAS GONE ASTRAY AND LEAVING THE 99, REACHING OUT TO THAT ONE SHEEP. LIKE THE PARABLE, GOD IS ULTIMATELY THE GARDENER THAT WANTS YOU AND ME TO FLOURISH! HE IS THE GARDENER IN THIS PARABLE AND HE WANTS US TO FLOURISH IN THIS ORCHARD. AND WE CANNOT PRODUCE FRUIT UNLESS WE'RE DEEPLY ROOTED IN THE ORCHARD. BY REMAINING IN FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD, AGAIN, IN THE STATE OF SANCTIFYING GRACE, GROWING IN CHARITY. OUR ROOTS BECOME DEEP WITHIN GOD WHO IS THE SOURCE OF ALL LIFE. THE CATECHISM SAYS INTERIOR REPENTANCE IS A RADICAL REORIENTATION OF OUR WHOLE LIFE. A RETURN, A CONVERSION TO GOD WITH ALL OUR HEART, AN END TO SIN, TURNING AWAY FROM EVIL, A REPUGNANCE TOWARD THE EVIL ACTIONS THAT WE HAVE COMMITTED. AND AT THE SAME TIME, IT ENTAILS THE DESIRE AND REFERENCES DO YOO CHANGE ONE'S LIFE, WITH HOPE IN GOD'S MERCY. AND TRUST IN THE HOPE AND HELP OF HIS GRACE. THIS IS CATECHISM 1431, MEDITATE UPON THAT VERSE. THE NEXT PARAGRAPH SAYS, CONVERSION IS FIRST OF ALL A WORK OF GRACE, OF THE GRACE OF GOD WHO MAKES OUR HEARTS RETURN TO HIM. THIS IS A THEME THAT I WANTED TO GET ACROSS IN THIS HOMILY. THAT CONVERSION, FIRST OF ALL, IS A WORK OF THE GRACE OF GOD WHO MAKES OUR HEARTS RETURN TO HIM. IT'S GOD'S INITIATIVE FIRST! IT'S HIM, REACHING OUT TO US FIRST. AND ALL OF US ARE CALLED TO CONVERSION OF LIFE. CONVERSION REQUIRES A TURNING AWAY FROM THAT WHICH KEEPS US SEPARATED FROM GOD OR DAMAGES, WEAKENS OUR FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD IN THIS WALKING WITH THE LORD, THIS REORIENTATION OF OUR LIVES. SAINT JOHN CHRYSOSTOM SAYS, BE ASHAMED WHEN YOU SIN. DON'T BE ASHAMED WHEN YOU REPENT. HE SAYS, SIN IS THE WOUND. REPENTANCE IS THE MEDICINE. SIN IS FOLLOWED BY SHAME. REPENTANCE IS FOLLOWED BY BOLDNESS. SATAN HAS OVERTURNED THIS ORDER AND GIVEN BOLDNESS TO SIN AND SHAME TO REPENTANCE. THIS IS WHAT SATAN DOES. ANY OF US PERHAPS GET CLOSE TO GOD AND WANT TO GET CLOSER TO GOD AND REPENT OF OUR SINS, NOTICE SATAN SOMETIMES, LIKE A SNEAKY LITTLE SNAKE, SLITHERS IN AND MAKES US FEEL EVEN MORE SHAMEFUL THAT, NO, GOD CAN'T POSSIBLY FORGIVE YOU. HAVE YOU EVER FELT THAT WAY? DURING THIS TIME OF THE WORLD-WIDE PANDEMIC, HOPEFULLY WE'VE ALL HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO REFLECT ON OUR LIVES AND GIVE PRIORITY OVER WHAT MATTERS IN LIFE. AND PERHAPS DEDICATE OURSELVES TOWARD THE CONVERSION OF LIFE BY PROFOUND REPENTANCE. WHAT MIGHT THIS LOOK LIKE PRACTICALLY? THE SACRAMENTS IN MOST PLACES, IT SEEMS LIKE, THEY ARE BEING OPENED UP AND AVAILABLE AND THIS MIGHT MEAN APPROACHING THE CHURCH AND MAKING A SINCERE AND HUMBLE CONFESSION. WHEN POPE EMERITUS POPE BENEDICT 16, IN THE UNITED STATES, BACK IN 2008, HE HIGHLIGHTED THE IMPORTANCE OF CONFESSION TO AMERICANS. AND INDEED, THIS COULD BE APPLIED TO THE ENTIRE CHURCH. I WOULD LIKE TO READ WHAT HE SAID. HE SAID THE LIBERATING POWER OF THIS SACRAMENT, IN WHICH OUR HONEST CONFESSION OF SIN IS MET BY GOD'S MERCIFUL WORD OF PARDON AND PEACE NEEDS TO BE REDISCOVERED AND RE-APPROPRIATED BY EVERY CATHOLIC. TO A GREAT EXTENT, THE RENEWAL OF THE CHURCH IN AMERICA DEPENDS ON THE RENEWAL OF THE PRACTICE OF PENANCE AND THE GROWTH IN HOLINESS THAT WHICH BOTH THE SACRAMENT INSPIRES AND ACCOMPLISHES. THE RENEWAL OF THE CHURCH IN AMERICA AND EVEN THROUGHOUT THE WORLD IS CONTINGENT, IN OTHER WORDS, UPON A RENEWAL OF THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE, OF CONFESSION. MAYBE IT'S BEEN YEARS SINCE YOU MADE A GOOD CONFESSION. PERHAPS YOU HAVE BEEN AFRAID TO CONFESS A CERTAIN SIN IN YOUR LIFE THAT HAS WEIGHED YOU DOWN IN SHAME. THERE IS NO NEED TO BE SHACKLED BY SIN FOR ONE DAY LONGER. GOD DOES NOT DESIRE FOR US TO BE CHAINED DOWN BY OUR SIN ANY LONGER. HE DESIRES THAT YOU BE FREE. HE DESIRES THAT YOU BE IN RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. AND HOWEVER LONG ITS BEEN SINCE YOUR LAST CONFESSION, DON'T PUT IT OFF A WEEK, MONTH OR ANY LONGER! GOD DESIRES THAT YOU HAVE PEACE OF MIND AND HEART. SO, THIS IS ME CASTING OUT THAT NET, VIRTUAL NET TO YOU, AND HOPEFULLY I CAN GRAB SOMEBODY AND PULL YOU IN, WHEREVER YOU MAY BE. I PRAY FOR THAT GRACE THAT YOU NEED TO BE HONEST, SORRY FOR YOUR SINS, ALONG WITH A FIRM RESOLUTION, TO COME BACK AND TO TURN AWAY FROM SIN. SO, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO PRAY AND TO CALL A LOCAL PARISH NEAR YOU, WHEREVER YOU ARE AT IN THE WORLD. TO CALL A PRIEST, IF YOU ARE CONFINED TO YOUR HOME, IF YOU ARE ELDERLY. MAYBE IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE CONFESSION OR TO RECEIVE THE SACRAMENT OF THE SICK, CALL A PRIEST. I'M POSITIVE THAT A PRIEST WILL BE MORE THAN WILLING TO COME TO YOUR HOME, EVEN IF IT MEANS SITTING ON YOUR PORCH AND HEARING YOUR CONFESSION THROUGH THE SCREEN DOOR. THE PRIEST WILL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO HELP YOU, TO HELP YOU RESTORE YOUR LIFE TO GOD, TO GIVE YOU THAT PEACE OF MIND YOU WANTED FOR SO MANY YEARS BUT NOT KNOWN HOW TO GO ABOUT IT OR MAYBE TO EVEN HAVE BEEN AFRAID. MAYBE YOU ARE A CATHOLIC THAT GOES TO CONFESSION, ONCE A YEAR WHICH IS THE BARE MINIMUM OF WHAT THE CHURCH REQUIRES. THIS MEANS TO GO TO CONFESSION MORE OFTEN, NOT JUST ONCE A YEAR. MAYBE ONCE A MONTH. I GUARANTEE YOU THAT PRACTICE WILL HELP YOU IN YOUR ROAD TO HOLINESS. REMEMBER, WE ARE REQUIRED TO CONFESS ALL MORTAL SINS BY NAME AND NUMBER. WHAT THIS MEANS, CONFESS WHAT THE SIN IS, CONCRETELY. THAT WE DON'T JUST SKIRT AROUND WHAT IT IS. THAT WE CONFESS PLAINLY WHAT WE HAVE DONE, THAT WE ACCUSE OUR SELF OF THE SIN. WE DON'T ACCUSE ANYBODY ELSE. THIS IS WHAT I HAVE DONE. WE ARE THE JUDGE OF OURSELVES, WE ACCUSE OURSELVES. AROUND HOW MANY TIMES WE HAVE COMMITTED THE SIN, IF WE KNOW AND JUST A SIN THAT MAY BE KEEPING PEOPLE AWAY IS PERHAPS THE SIN OF ABORTION. GOD, SOMETIMES PEOPLE THINK THAT THEY CAN'T BE FORGIVEN BY SUCH A SIN. THAT'S NOT TRUE! DON'T LISTEN TO THAT LIE. GOD CAN FORGIVE ANYTHING, AND HE DOES. EVEN A PERSON THAT HAS HAD THREE ABORTIONS OR FIVE ABORTIONS OR 10 ABORTIONS. TO NAME THAT, WITH CONFIDENCE. AND GOD WANTS TO FORGIVE YOU. HE DOESN'T WANT YOU TO BE HELD IN SHACKLES. MAYBE YOU WERE AN REPLIES IN -- ACCOMPLICE IN ABORTION OR ABORTIONIST, HELPING TO PERFORM ABORTIONS. I REMEMBER WATCHING THE FILM, ABOUT ABBY JOHNSON'S LIFE. AT THE END OF THE FILM, SHE SAYS TO HER HUSBAND, HOW CAN GOD POSSIBLY FORGIVE ME? I'VE COMMITTED, BEEN INVOLVED IN TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ABORTIONS IN MY LIFE. HOW CAN HE POSSIBLY FORGIVE ME? AND THE ANSWER THAT HER HUSBAND GAVE WAS VERY SIMPLE AND VERY BEAUTIFUL. BECAUSE HE'S GOD. GOD CAN FORGIVE YOU. GOD WANTS TO FORGIVE YOU. LIKE THE PARABLE, GOD DESIRES US TO BE PART OF HIS VINEYARD. WHEN WE ARE WITHIN THE ORCHARD, WE ENJOY THE FRIENDSHIP OF GOD. IN COOPERATION WITH THE GRACE OF GOD, GOD REAPS AN ABUNDANCE OF HARVEST. BUT WHEN WE SEVER OURSELVES FROM THE ORCHARD AGAIN, WE LOSE OUR FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD. WE ARE SPIRITUALLY DEAD. AND THE LORD DOES NOT DESIRE THAT OF US. HE DOES NOT DESIRE THAT WE'RE CUT OFF FROM HIS LIFE, FROM THE ORCHARD. IF YOU NEED TO, PRAY FOR THAT GRACE TO MAKE A GOOD, HUMBLE AND SINCERE CONFESSION. Come. [people murmuring] None of us are perfect. We all need a little indulgence. The pope has decreed that by making a small donation and saying a prayer, you can help in the building of a huge new basilica for St Peter in Rome; and by doing so, will avert temporal punishment in purgatory, and you can pray for your loved ones who have gone on before you. So pray for them. When the coin in the casket rings, the rescued soul to Heaven springs. [people murmuring] Woman: Oh, here it is. I've found one. Narrator: So successful was Tetzel's preaching and fundraising that when he came to a town near Wittenberg, it came to the attention of an Augustinian friar named Martin Luther, whose own pupils and friends were enthusing about them. Luther, perhaps in a moment of pique, wrote his 95 Theses against the sale of Indulgences and sent them to Archbishop Albrecht. Copies began to circulate and thus the so-called "Reformation" was born almost by accident. [♪] Recipients of an indulgence must first go to sacramental confession to a priest and receive absolution. But just as a person who has fallen foul of the law must still serve time, even if he is sorry, an indulgence is like a remission. This is achieved by the infinite treasury of merits of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Rev Dr Thomas Crean: Because we are all one body in Christ - those who are faithful on earth, the souls in Purgatory, the Blessed in Heaven - because we are all one body, the graces and the merits of Our Lord, Our Lady, and of the Saints in Heaven can be applied to us on Earth. This is what the Church does when She grants to us an indulgence. Narrator: The practice of confession and forgiveness goes back to the teachings of Christ to His apostles, For in St John's Gospel, Jesus says, "Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them." [♪] Confession is one of the Seven Sacraments of the Church. The others are Baptism, Holy Communion, Confirmation, Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick, and Matrimony. They were all instituted by Jesus Christ our Lord, and are outward signs of inward grace, necessary for salvation. [♪] There have been many reformers in the history of the Catholic Church. And yet, unlike Luther, they remained faithful to the Church and her sacraments; saints such as St Athanasius, St Francis, and St Dominic. [♪] And yet, to call them reformers is a misnomer, for they came not to reform but to reaffirm the doctrines and holiness of the Catholic Church in the face of corruption and heresies, for She was founded by Jesus Christ Himself. [♪] Dr David Anders: One of the marks of the Church is Its holiness. One, Holy, Catholic; One, Holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church. Where do we see the Holiness of the Church most manifest? It's in the lives of the saints. When I think about the Holiness of the Church in confrontation with the problem of corruption, the best example, I think, the most emblematic statement of the Church's holiness is the life of Francis of Assisi. Narrator: Good and loyal followers of Jesus stretch back to the dawn of Christianity. When at the age of 30, Jesus called His apostles, He made Peter first among them, the rock upon which He will build His Church. He also said of Himself, "I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst". [♪] However, satan will always try and attack the followers of Christ. In the first century, pagan Rome ruled most of Europe, and many Christians met a Martyr's fate, both St Peter and St Paul in Rome; hence, Rome became an important pilgrimage site, and the successor of St Peter resides close to the tomb of the apostle to this day. The primacy of the Church of Rome and the successors of St Peter were established from the mid-first century. Other Churches turned to Her for counsel. [♪] The Church Herself was inflicted with many heresies, particularly the Gnostic. In order to distinguish the true Church of Jesus Christ from heretical sects, the name Catholic Church was used. Fr Crean: The word 'Catholic' comes from a Greek word meaning 'universal' and the first known application of the word comes from about the year 100, from St Ignatius of Antioch, who was a bishop in Antioch at that time. Narrator: Under the Early Church Fathers, from the late first century to the early fourth, Christianity continued to spread throughout the Roman Empire. In AD 313 the Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity. The Gospel of Jesus Christ had therefore conquered Rome. [♪] However, Constantine became concerned about the disunity in the Church caused by the Arian heresy. Arius was a priest that taught that Jesus was not co-eternal with the Father, but was created, and therefore, a lesser God. In response to this discord, Constantine convened the first council of Nicaea in AD 325. He sent out invitations to all the bishops of the Christian world. According to Athanasius of Alexandria, 318 bishops attended. Each bishop was allowed advisers, usually priests and deacons. The main advisor for Alexander of Alexandria was Athanasius, who as a deacon, could not speak at the council but was allowed to advise his bishop. [♪] Arius was only a priest, and priests also could not take part in the council, but he was invited to speak. [♪] Hosius of Corduba, the papal legate, presides over the council on behalf of the pope, as the pope did not attend but remained in Rome. Eusebius of Nicomedia, an Arian, gives the opening address, and asks for permission to call Arius to the floor. [♪] Arius gives an account of his beliefs. He falsely argues that if the Father begat the Son, the Son was begotten and had a beginning; therefore, there was a time when the Son was not. The Council is in uproar ov this statement. [♪] The majority of the Council Fathers do not agree with Arius; even his own bishop, Alexander of Alexandria, denounces him. Arius is called a heretic. Bishop: Blasphemy! Blasphemy! [Bishops protesting Arius] Narrator: Alexander asks the advice of Athanasius, who points out that Arius is not citing any of the Church Fathers, for none have interpreted sacred Scripture in this way before. The Council of Nicaea affirmed that Jesus Christ is consubstantial with the Father. They formulate what became known as the Nicene Creed, which is recited at Holy Mass to this day. Arius and his supporters are banished. Fr William Slattery: The Council of Nicaea was very important for the future of Western Civilization, because it fought over the foundation of any civilization, which is truths. Ideas matter. Catholicism in its truths matters; and the integrity of Catholicism can depend on one iota, one I. In fact, the great debate after Nicaea was all about the difference between two Greek words, homoousios and homoiousios, whether Christ was consubstantial to the Father, or whether Christ was merely similar in substance to the Father. Over this, the great men of that age fought, led by the great St Athanasius. And today we have to follow in their footsteps to ensure the integrity of Catholicism in order to ensure the integrity of a Christian civilization. [♪] Narrator: It was at the Councils of Carthage of AD 397 and 419 that the canon of the New Testament was finally settled. Before that, various books were scattered throughout the Christian world and mixed with spurious books such as the false Gnostic Gospel of Thomas and others. Fr. Mitch Pacwa: The canon of the New Testament became an issue in the fourth century, after the persecutions were done. And Pope St Damasus commissioned a priest of Rome, namely St Jerome, to go around the Mediterranean asking the bishops which books they had. The most complete collection of the New Testament was held by St Athanasius of Alexandria, and he went all throughout the Mediterranean. Then, upon returning to Rome, Pope St Damasus called a synod of Italian bishops in 382, and this was the first decree of a canon. A decade later, another council was held in Carthage, and then about five years later in Hippo, and again, I think, in Carthage, each of which agreed on that canon of both Old and New Testaments. Narrator: Therefore, it was the Catholic Church that compiled the New Testament through Her councils, which was then ratified by the Pope. The canon of the Old Testament was also confirmed as being the 46 books of the Septuagint or the Greek Old Testament. Jesus and the Apostles reference the Septuagint version of the Old Testament; however, Martin Luther and the other Protestants threw some of these books of the Bible out in the 16th century . Fr Crean: Well, St Paul quotes from the Greek version of the Old Testament, even when the Greek version differs from the Hebrew version of the Old Testament, which is a sign that he regarded the Greek version, which had the disputed books in, that St Paul regarded that as Holy Scripture. Narrator: It is important to note that the Church continued from the time of Jesus and the Apostles, through the Church Fathers that adopted the word 'Catholic,' the Council of Nicaea that ratified the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, and the Councils of Carthage that collected and listed the books of the Bible. It was therefore the Catholic Church that proclaimed Christianity. In AD 410, Rome fell to the barbarians, and pagans blamed Christians because the decline and fall of Rome happened during their watch. In response, St Augustine of Hippo wrote 'The City of God' to illustrate that Christianity is no mere religion but a fully ordered way of life and explains how the Catholic Church can build a civilization based on the Gospel. Popes, bishops, and rulers found in this work the monumental blueprint for a true Christian civilization. Arguably, St Augustine, along with Thomas Aquinas, are two of the greatest philosophers
