HIGHEST GROSSING MOVIES TIER LIST

all right you know what time it is lots of great movies make a ton of money but that does not mean that all movies that make a ton of money are great so today i want to look at the top 20 highest grossing movies of all time and put them in a tier list ranking tears are pretty simple this time around best great good meh bad i think we should just get into it no need for a long intro here also for the record this is not adjusted for inflation and the link to this tier list is in the description below if you want to fill it out as well all right let's go first up the live action beauty and the beast film i'm gonna throw this in mess straight off the bat not gonna lie i kind of enjoyed this when i saw it in the cinema but i mean really there isn't anything that special about it to me it's mostly competent but everything quite good about it is just a less engaging version of its animated counterpart a remake should be to build on the original or do something better and i don't feel like this did that at any point at most some parts were as good initially i was quite on board with these disney live action remakes but as time has passed i'm starting to see why people feel that they're quite pointless like it's more or less the animated one but it just feels more lifeless that being said it's not going in bad it still has good costumes and sets solid musical numbers solid performances it's just not anything i'd ever really watch again although i'd be remiss if i didn't mention that luke evans s gaston was great and is definitely the highlight of this film next up captain america civil war i've talked about this movie a ton over the years so i'll keep it short and sweet this is definitely up there with the mcu films great action very interesting story that doesn't lose focus despite having an insane number of characters in it has a few minor issues so i won't go with best but i'll definitely put it at the top of great minions bad i mean if one of these is going to go in bad it has to be minions it isn't the worst movie ever made especially for little kids i'm sure they can get a kick out of it i saw it i think when i was 13 and while it wasn't great i remember not being bored while watching it so it's fine entertainment especially for younger people but when you compare it to great kids films that can be enjoyed by kids and adults pretty much equally the best of which will even be enjoyed more as you get older and you understand more this is just nowhere near those in terms of quality a lot of the humor just feels kind of lazy there's nothing that interesting about any of the characters or the story there are some okay action scenes and again as something pretty mindless for kids it's fine but in general i think i gotta put this in the lowest tier up next there's black panther which is between good and great for me i think i'm gonna put it at the very top of good although could move up to great of course there's been lots of talk about this movie recently after the tragic passing of chadwick boseman which i'd like to take this chance to address it's just heartbreaking i don't know if there's much else to say the lessons to take away from it i suppose are you never know what someone's actually going through so don't be presumptuous about it and also enjoy life right now in the moment because tomorrow is never promised he was a great actor he brought an iconic character to life very well and will definitely be missed also how strong you have to be to make all these movies while battling cancer it's insane so rest in peace chad bozeman anyway the movie of black panther chadwick and the cast are definitely one of the best parts of it along with the world building and the themes some really interesting stuff it has some problems but to be honest after the whole chadwick postman thing it just feels kind of weird to be critiquing this movie right now i've talked about it in other videos so if you want a full review go watch that but for now i'll say in conclusion a really good movie featuring a great lead performance from chadwick boseman next up star wars the force awakens to be honest the general opinion on star wars films changes so often that i don't even know if this is a controversial take at this point but i'm putting this in great i'm not even that into star wars but i really really like this movie yes it's totally a remake of a new hope but besides that which by the way is a decent way of reintroducing this franchise to no audience it's really well done it's an extremely fun and exciting adventure movie it has some amazing action a great villain some fun characters that are developed enough for this first film but you look forward to seeing them getting even more interesting development as this trilogy continues in a cohesive way oh wait a solid amount of nostalgia without them going overboard with it and having it take away from the story all in all this was pretty much what i was hoping this film would be also very rewatchable in my opinion i watched it like five times in the two years after it came out again as someone who isn't a huge star wars fan so great age of ultron this one is between good and meh for me i want to put it in meh because as far as mcu movies go it is one of the more average ones but on the other hand just as a fun summer blockbuster i do think it gets more hate than it deserves it's pretty good i mean it's not as good as the first avengers which is something that definitely hurt it on my first viewing of it when i had those really lofty expectations but on its own it has some funny moments some good action quite a good villain decisions i think i'm gonna end up putting in meh just because it does lack the heart that really good summer blockbusters have like i never really felt that much watching this besides oh this is pretty fun even the hawkeye stuff while good isn't incredibly deep and the natasha bruce love story just feels more odd than emotional to me plus it's a bit all over the place and trying to set up future mcu movies and that final battle just seems to go on forever with it becoming less and less interesting as it goes so yeah age of ultron is going in meh but keep in mind i do like it i think it's an enjoyable watch and the more i talk about it it could actually move up to good all right next up frozen um i'm gonna put frozen in the good section i know this started to get more hated because of how popular it was but i think it's a good movie i really liked it when i saw it as a kid seven years ago seven years holy [ __ ] so much so that i actually made it the thumbnail of my top seven movies of 2013 video classic video that one but even now all these years later i still think it's a good kids movie fun characters great animation obviously catchy songs given how much they took over the world some funny moments a nice message it's good end game i've talked about this movie a ton there are lots of videos on my channel if you want a more in-depth look at this from me but all in all it's gotta go invest i do think it has some problems but the sheer magnitude of this culmination of over 20 films and how out handles the payoff for all these stories and a bunch of these characters it can't not be invest i think it gives a great resolution to multiple characters steve's being my favorite it has an extremely fun premise for mcu fans it has so many epic moments again the good parts of it are so good that they outshine the not so good parts of it and do it to such an extent that i've gotta put it in best and i love that in a franchise of setting up future properties while this does set those up in smaller ways it is a proper ending to the infinity saga then we've got fast and furious 7. i'll put this in good this movie is exactly what you'd expect it to be it's dumb over-the-top action it's pretty fun for most of it it does have some really bad moments and some of the humor doesn't work but when the movie is leading into its ridiculousness and having fun with it it's quite enjoyable and the way it handled paul walker's passing is really well done then fate of the furious also good i actually enjoyed this more than seven i don't really know why because they're very similar but pretty much take everything that made seven good and then they added more dwayne statham stuff so actually that's probably why i liked it more it's meant to be dumb fun and it does it quite well there isn't much else about it though that makes it stick out to me like it was fun watching in the cinema with a large popcorn but i don't know if i'd watch it again so good all right the incredibles 2. i'll also say that's good i've got a bit of a trend here when it came out i enjoyed it i went in with measured expectations and with those expectations yeah it was a very fun time but besides the fun of it i didn't find much else about it that interesting it is better than just a totally average pixar movie the animation is absolutely phenomenal it has some exciting and really creative action scenes it's a funny film and there are decent character arcs in here but i felt it lacked the really engaging story and villain and level of heart and genuine emotion coming from the family dynamic that made the first film so special also this is very much a personal thing but while the animation is undeniably amazing personally i prefer the animation of the original even though it's technically worse there's something about it that makes the world feel more real or have more of an edge to it i don't know it's almost too polished in the second one for my taste but i get why they did that with technology improving and it is great animation anyway definitely a good movie clearly a lot of effort went into a lot of parts of this film infinity war you already know this is going in best in a similar way to civil war and endgame i feel i've talked this movie to death overall an extremely fun and well put together film fantastic action and visuals good characters great villain crazy ending that shocked the world yes i know those who read the comics knew this was coming but most of the world was shocked it's an amazing cinematic achievement so many memorable moments extremely satisfying for msu fans as the beginning of the end great to re-watch many times and i'd say arguably it's better than end game also has this moment which could almost put it in best just on its own then there's jurassic world good i'll put this in good okay no it's not as good or as memorable or groundbreaking as the original let's just get that out of the way now but in terms of a fun summer blockbuster it's hard to deny that this isn't at least entertaining a lot of it has that fun spielberg feeling to it it has some interesting meta commentary about audiences reactions to spectacles such as dinosaurs becoming less enthusiastic and thus crazier stuff has to be done to keep people interested fun action good charismatic lead performances great visual effects and hey look at that finale that is the movie just embracing that it's a ridiculous blockbuster and i love that they just said [ __ ] it t-rex and wrap your team up on crazy hybrid dinosaur plus water dinosaur makes an appearance how is that not awesome also yes water dinosaur is definitely its official name yeah the movie's not without plot holes or subplots that aren't as interesting and like i mentioned it's not a spectacular film like the first so all that is why it's going in good it's a good solid fun film up next titanic you know what i don't know if this is going to be a controversial take i'm putting this in best that's right might seem like a bit of an odd one out up there but still that's where it's going i just really loved how well made this movie is and how it hits all the emotions it's trying to yeah you can call the romance cheesy but it's almost like the quintessential movie romance when someone says movie romance this is what i think of dicaprio and winslet are both great and they have fantastic chemistry the story is great it's also just such an iconic movie the music those classic movie moments it's just an experience watching it for the first time the action and visuals are also incredible some amazing visual effects that convey this horrifying scenario really well it's a bunch of different genres in one movie but all of them work really well it's romantic it's heartbreaking it's horrifying it's exciting it's funny it's all of it yes it's a bit too long the whole present day part ah that could have been cut down a bit but in general the run time didn't really bother me it's one of those movies where if you're constantly looking at your watch yeah it'll feel long but if you let yourself really get immersed in it then it's an amazing experience my only other complaint that i can think of is the at times cartoony villain but besides that titanic is an excellent movie story wise visually emotionally it's amazing alright harry potter and the deathly hallows part two 100 in best this movie was the end game of its day you know i feel like maybe because marvel has been so successful in the same decade as this movie it doesn't get enough credit for being an amazing conclusion to a long series of films like if you think about the most impactful movies of the 2010s mcu probably comes to mind before harry potter but i'm a huge harry potter fan it was the franchise of my childhood and this movie it's just the perfect culmination if part 1 is a bit slower and more poorly paced although in hindsight it's not as bad as i originally felt part 2 is just action and payoff all the way through but it's not an overload of it where it gets overwhelming it's still well paced even though most the film revolves around this giant battle it has very emotional moments it feels epic it has phenomenal action and there's just something so cool about seeing these characters you grew up with in this epic climax of their stories i think it even works in a different way from the mcu because even though i grew up with the mcu characters as in i watched them as i was growing up i quite literally grew up with harry potter as then i watched those movies when i was a kid and as i got older and older the characters were getting older with me as well obviously there was a bit of a gap in the exact age but the fact that these movies went from kids movies which i watched as a little kid and progressively got darker until it reached this amazing climax that i could actually appreciate the epicness of and seeing these characters that you feel like you know because you've watched them for so many years and you've related to them and you've laughed with them and all that plus as a kid you fill in those gaps between movies in your mind now face this giant final battle to end it all it just adds so much more emotion and a feeling of investment to an already very well done final film so yeah definitely going in best for me iron man 3. this is going straight into the gray tier honestly i really love this movie i know a lot of people hate it but for me it's one of the most enjoyable mcu films if you're just sitting down and want to watch something entertaining this is perfect despite some of its flaws it's a very funny movie it's got some really great action some good performances it's just a thoroughly enjoyable fun movie jurassic world fallen kingdom uh this might be another one in the bad tier you know like i'll be honest i don't remember a lot from this movie but that will not stop me from judging it intensely for real though it just wasn't as compelling as the first film the characters were a bit all over the place and inconsistent it had some really dumb moments even for a franchise that is over the top and generally a bit silly the finale just evolves into screaming and explosions and jump scares and none of it is really that interesting it's just a bunch of noise at a certain point it does have some cool moments and it's very well shot and the cast is solid and i suppose the setup for the third film was kind of interesting let's put it like this i'd be interested to see a third film but i wouldn't be interested in re-watching this movie overall also in my opinion it's mostly just a bunch of elements from previous jurassic park films mashed together to make a film that's quite forgettable so top end of bad because it's not terrible but i'd still go with bad for this one okay star wars the last jedi let's see if i'll piss people off here do people still get super passionate about this movie anyway i think it's good i was really on board with this movie after i saw it for the first time and gave it a really positive review in which i also made this statement which is aged like a fine wine as someone who really likes star wars but isn't a mega fan i loved it someone who is a huge fan of this stuff i imagine it's gonna go crazy over this but as time has passed and i've rewatched parts of it it's not amazing it's just good to me it does have amazing stuff in it for sure but there's also some stuff that does kind of stick out like a sore thumb and to be honest i don't think what i dislike is what the giant hate group against this film disliked like all the luke skywalker stuff and ray being a nobody stuff i actually found quite interesting but then there's stuff like finn and rose's whole side mission which had potential but wasn't great especially that chase scene and the resolution to that storyline is really bad and there are other parts in the film and elements throughout that also aren't great but i don't know i still think it has some solid character stuff and great moments and overall is entertaining it is also hurt a bit by the fact that this trilogy was so poorly planned and so looking back on it now as a whole it's this giant jumbled mess but anyway this movie on its own good and even if you hate this movie with the fury of a thousand suns at least it gave you something to talk about right the avengers best one of my absolute favorite movies of all time my favorite cinema experience i've ever had amazing action well paced great characters very funny solid emotional moments still holds up to this day again all these videos on my channel if you want my more in-depth thoughts and finally the movie that held the crown for the highest grossing movie of all time for quite a while avatar this movie's been a bit controversial i'd say or not even controversial but just people complaining that it's overrated that it's forgettable and now having finally watched myself i like to weigh in and say no i think it's pretty great much like titanic avatar really is an experience it does an amazing job of immersing you into this world and it draws you into the point where you almost forget you're watching a movie which is what great immersive movies should do it's obviously visually insanely spectacular even over a decade later its effects look better and more impressive than lots of movies that come out today i will say the na'vi themselves do take a little bit of time to get used to i think initially there's a bit of that uncanny valley effect there but after a bit you settle into it i also absolutely loved the world building here there was clearly so much thought that went into this world with the creatures and the nature and the society and the traditions and all of it it's incredibly detailed and immersive and creative and it really drew me in it does such a good job of developing this culture that when the third act rules around and there's that big battle you really do care about what's happening and feel the impact of moments like when their home is destroyed this is a great case of action being visually excellent but also being interesting because of how well this world and these characters goals have been developed up to this point because without that it could just turn into colors and noise and not be as interesting as we've seen with some other examples on this list i think the romance is also good i don't think it's amazing but it's definitely good there are good performances all around here steven lang is great as the over the top stereotypical army general in terms of the message of the film i do think in general it does a great job of communicating it again in these horrific moments for the na'vi you genuinely really feel it because of how well built up this has been it's powerful but i do think sometimes it's a bit heavy-handed mainly with the villains like the giovanni rubici character there's one part where he says something like they're just stupid trees hahaha moronic villain laugh and there are a few moments like that where it's so not subtle that i'm thinking we get it you were doing a good job of showing this before we didn't need such an in-your-face moment to tell us this guy is terrible and what he's doing is wrong they communicate that stuff better and in more subtle ways in other parts of the film but overall a great film one of the best worlds ever committed to film a compelling story i can see why this was the highest grossing movie for a while especially adding in the 3d and the cinema experience of it and there you have it there's my tier
