in today's video we're going to take a very critical and serious look at identification and evaluation of jewelry i'm going to show you where to look i'm going to show you what to look for how to figure out something is or is not valuable let's jump right into it rusty the reseller he'll sell you the shirt off his back well i have done it all right folks we're going to talk about some of this jewelry here i've got variety of things to show you here i'm going to try uh from time to time to use this this sucker right here to zoom in on stuff but i want to just show you kind of some of the ways of approaching jewelry you can find things near you maybe things are given to you maybe you bought stuff uh hoping to find a treasure whatever it is i'm going to show you some things here that i've purchased locally within the last three months that i paid just a few bucks for and turned out to be more valuable than the person selling it realized why well sometimes people just don't have the time they don't check they don't know where to check but that should not be your problem after this video because i'm going to show you what to look for in the time and kind of what some of them look like so let's just launch into it here this particular necklace i actually purchased yesterday at a local thrift store and you can see it's kind of uh twisted up here but basically it's this leaf pattern as you can see here quite quite nice it's costume jewelry all right and instead of trying to unwind that totally i'm going to actually show you so right here is the clasp if you were to you know click it with your fingernail there it would open up so let me go and just do that you can see i've still got the price tag on it there two dollars and what i'm going to do is i'm going to take this clasp and you can see on the bottom side of it there there's some writing if you look real close and i'm going to turn it i think it's this way right here so you can see all right right here what we're looking at is something that says napier napier do you see that that is a costume jewelry name okay costume jewelry uh there's a lot of different um brands out there that can have high values so if you just do a quick glance at ebay look up costume jewelry and you will see some of the names popping up in the titles just look for search for sold items and you'll see the ones that are selling for the most for two dollars this thing's probably gonna sell for between twenty and thirty dollars but always look on necklaces and bracelets and bangles right where the necklace or the bracelet joins together the clasp here look on the inside you can open the inside look on the back side and you will oftentimes find a maker's mark a manufacturer like that or even marks that indicate if there's some sort of a precious metal okay moving on here uh let's look at this necklace we're talking about necklaces the same issue applies you can see this is not clasped currently i could put it on like that but when i saw this it just looks like a gold tone or copper right just at first glance but if i if i inspect the clasp and i flip it over you're going to see some writing on there again if i pull this up you're going to be able to see that it says 120th 12 carat over or on sterling okay and so what this means is that this is gold-plated 120th of uh the metal is uh 12 karat gold on the outside of it on sterling so this is a sterling silver necklace this entire thing it weighs somewhere around 60 grams okay i paid two dollars for it and just the weight of the silver alone that's around a 45 dollar uh something like that value if i was just selling it for scrap the fact it has gold on it actually gives it more value and the fact that it's a vintage piece that is functional and actually has a pleasant and a little bit of a unique look to it means it'll go for even more than that again we're looking at the clasps carrying on this same subject here here's a little bracelet it's got a very cool uh clasp here as you can see if i as i uh it's on this other side rather you pop it on the side and then this has a tube in the middle you can see this slides out very interesting clasp when i was inspecting this at first i thought to myself this might be a gold or gold uh it has the look of gold plating you can see that there's a silverish edge on on the side there where it's been worn but it's gold on the inside on the uh on the other side that's kind of indicative of vintage gold-plated or rolled gold jewelry items so again here's the clasp if i look on the underside i noticed something a little unusual on this one side it's this little circle so again i'm going to bring this up and see if i can get it close enough for you to see um okay you can see that there's a name there and if you can't see it uh yourself there we go it says uh g-r-o-s-s-e gross or grasse i did a little bit of research on this and it turns out that this manufacturer is the precursor to um to what was it oh dog on it was it chanel uh no christian dior it was christian dior and so a very well-known uh you know manufacturer of fine jewelry and as well as costume jewelry and so because of how it's connected to that one dog on it let me get this in here there we go clip that back on beautiful little bracelet there two dollars for this again this is about 150 to 200 bracelet because of that brand name and i wouldn't have known that had i not inspected it first sometimes it's a simple it's a very simple way of looking at it you look in right here there's a letter m and over here in very big letters 24 karat electroplated whoa well if this has gold content on it at all it's worth at least two dollars so i bought it is this worth a ton no 15 20 to the right buyer but a two dollar investment is not bad some people would not even look on the inside or no they just say oh it looks good or it doesn't look good or it just looks like costume jewelry and pitch it this has gold on it and i wouldn't have known that had i not looked on the inside i've separated this out in a couple of different categories here so that you can we can look at a few different things what we'll talk about next will be spoons now you've seen spoons probably different places they're antique stores and things are chopped full of them some spoons can have gold and silver content on them as well and you should inspect them what i do again just like jewelry is oftentimes i look at the back so let's start with this one right here it has this nice little um let's see if i can zoom in there we go uh it's got this nice little image of a person there on horseback kind of beautiful this beautiful little spiral here and on the inside it's got it says denver on it so if i flip this puppy over i already could tell by the tarnish of this that it looked like silver but then whenever i uh you know flipped it over and looked at it right here it says colorado right here colorado silver it doesn't say 925 but it is sterling silver it just needs to be polished a beautiful little thing i bought this in a baggie i paid 12 for somewhere around 30 different spoons and in that baggie there were three spoons that were silver so three spoons for 12 bucks this will sell for probably around 20 by itself the other two will sell close to that and then the rest of it is just profit as well let me show you this one here this is cronberg on it again we got this telltale type of tarnishing that sterling silver has on the back right here it says eight three zero s eight three zero is in reference to the parts per thousand of silver now sterling silver is 925 out of a thousand parts that other 75 parts is another type of alwyn metal which just aids in the the strength in the structure of the of the piece 830 is 830 out of a thousand parts so it is not as pure silver as sterling but it is still very high over 75 silver in content and therefore uh you know will definitely sell for a decent amount of money always look on the back and for marks of makers and those numbers you know 800 830 925 those are common numbers for sterling silver sometimes you really have to spend a decent amount of time looking and inspecting something to figure out where the actual mark is i bought this yesterday at a thrift store it was marked two dollars when i saw it it definitely has that silver tone but of course a lot of different types of costume jewelry can look like this and not be made of a precious metal when i went to where the the clasp for the way that it hooks together that spot here i first inspected this tube with these little round knobs i look at the chain links on the edges like this nope no no markings no markings so then i move on to the cuff here this little edge and what i found as i pull it around you can see it says ba 925 925 so this entire piece is sterling silver okay this thing weighs in a 70 to 80 gram which is very heavy for a sterling silver necklace and it also has a very intricate and really nice uh fluid movement uh with a really cool and intricate um interlinking chain design uh this is a unique kind of piece and with the weight again two dollars if this weighs 70 uh grams let's just say then this is going to be in the 55 to 60 range just on silver scrap weight which there are scrap people out there that buy that all day long i will definitely be able to sell it for more than that though because it is an attractive functional piece let's move on i'm going to go with the watches in a moment but i'm going to jump right in here now to some of these brooches these are all vintage kind of antique pieces which is typically what i like to to grab and i'm more likely to find pieces that are made of silver and gold out for good prices when they're vintage pieces for for whatever reason so this piece right here as you can see it is silver tone on the edge it has these little dots that kind of are reflective a little bit that's something called marcosite which is a type of mineral and then you've got this which looks like a building in kind of more of a coppery tone color if i look on the back and inspect it you'll notice right here on pointing there's an eight and a zero and a zero all right so eight hundred eight zero zero represents the silver content of this piece eight hundred out of a thousand parts silver now it's very common for ninety five to be on things made in the united states but in europe uh they have things of lesser contents 800 830 things like that and so that's what we're seeing here and i also believe that there's another marking over here which indicates gold so this piece on the back here all of this is 800 parts 2000 silver and then this part that looks copper on the front is actually gold okay that thing cost me about a dollar i'm gonna move this over and move to the next piece that's similar uh you can see that this is a unique looking piece definitely got some sort of a south american look here uh or central american rather it could be either a kind of you know image of a of a character there on the back here very clear it says peru it says 925 and it says 18k so this is a piece of sterling silver made in peru and this little medallion on the top is made of 18 karat gold moving on we've got this beautiful old kind of a victorian era brooch with this little hummingbird coming down here really awesome intricate scroll work on that on the back it's hard to see you look around but actually up underneath of here and i won't be able to show you in this it does say it has ss for sterling silver and also right here you can see it says the word sterling so this is a sterling silver brooch here's another little piece got these kind of looking celtic not looking things and this looks like a you know some sort of a fruit uh this one's a little bit harder i'm gonna zoom in you can see i'm looking on the back here what do i see what do i see very small indentations right here it says 925 and this tiny little stamp here if you didn't know what you're looking for folks you wouldn't even find it and that's why i do these videos i'm trying to teach you guys how to look so that you don't pass by things but these are the types of this is the type of knowledge you need to have anymore if you want to find good deals because the competition is getting fiercer it's harder and harder to find deals here's a beautiful piece i picked up yesterday as well i did really well at this one thrift store um so this is kind of a you can tell it's two-tone this has been uh soldered on here this pin and then you've got the the other part that looks kind of goldish right so on this particular piece right here it says p-a-t and has a number that is a patent number uh they put these patent numbers on there to indicate the type of clasp that they were using and when that clasp design was patented for use in jewelry and that was a legal requirement at the time this particular piece does not have a marking indicating the metal but i know based on the look of it the time period and because i'm so familiar with seeing the stuff that this is not a solid piece of gold but this is what they would call gold filled or gold plated which essentially means you've got a base metal that is not valuable that's strong on the inside and then on the outside of it you have a plating or a coating of gold and these are usually 12 karat gold or they are a perc you know a percentage of gold one tenth or 120th something like that all right folks watches another uh item in you know sort of in the jewelry category that can have gold and silver content this is a beautiful piece pretty unique i've not come across ones like this all that often again what you're looking at here is a thing that was very popular during the eduardian and even into the victorian era this marcus site and then you have this piece here if you open it up you're kind of surprised to see a more modern looking watch on the inside this is not a real old watch but it is made to look older perhaps it's older and they've just retrofitted it with a newer watch but i don't think so but you can see what we have here is something that almost looks like onyx but it's actually a black enamel put on here so the first thing i would tell you to do want to watch is to look on the back what does it say well this says stainless steel back japan movement made in china okay so made in china means it's typically not as valuable of peace if it had gold content on the bezel here it would say uh that it would say you know a certain percentage solid gold gold plate rolled gold something like that but then i move on to again the clasp right this is a clasp it has a clasp just like a bracelet or a necklace would have i opened it up i looked on the inside here and what did i see i see something says channel that's still not a great indication but then when i flip it over look what i find this is oit which is probably indication of whoever the maker was right and then right above it it says 925 so this this portion here not the watch piece itself that where it's in set but this piece here is all sterling silver and it's quite heavy it's probably in the 40 gram range again that's why you need to look at the clasp over here we have a watch that's in a pendant okay and uh it says burkes on it and so this would hang from a necklace typically turn it over and what do i see well this says 10k rgp bezel stainless steel back so what that means is that this piece right here that i'm tapping on is made of stainless steel however this portion up here is made of 10 carat rolled gold plate again rolled gold is something is a term uh that indicates the way that the gold was applied but all you need to know is that it is 10 carat gold on the shell on the outside of that piece so it has gold content all right definitely need some polish in there and again you see these little pieces here of marcosite that's a style folks that's something you'll see and if you get more into kind of researching the different styles of jewelry and artwork of those time periods then when you see something before you even know if it has value in metal if you see a certain type of style you'll probably have a pretty good idea of the time period it came from so look on the back of this watch very rough looking i'm not seeing a whole lot if i look on the band itself i see a word what does it say it says bell lines blinds ink okay so this is like an older uh stretch watch band probably not it looks a little bit newer than this is a very art deco design looking piece you can also tell in these watches these blue hands that kind of iridescent blue color was indicative early 1900s watches and you can see this is very actually a beautiful look um this is a ben russ or ben roos brand so what i do on watches is a lot of times again on the top or on the bottom you'll oftentimes see if there's a metal content but what i want to do here is i actually want to pop the back of this case open okay now don't worry about doing this you're not going to hurt anything you take out the the actual watch portion so see if i can do this on the thumbnail here while while you're watching we're going to remove this entirely from its casing and this particular one you want to be careful if it isn't a functional piece so that you don't damage or mess it up from from functioning because if you have an old piece of functions and you're in good it's good luck for you but if it's not like this one then uh what we're going to do is take a look on the inside and this says made in the usa bin roos rolled plate so again rolled doesn't have to say the word gold but when it just says rolled plate what it's indicating is that the there is gold plating on this and so at first glance no gold content but then you look on the inside and you see that it is i also love to look at these old movements and you'll see that the watch movement matches the other information we have it is a benris watch company seven jewels you can see some of these jewels these little lab created rubies in here and sometimes these little gears right here are made of gold content so you want to look up the the models of these watches as well the rubies the gems they aren't really going to hold a whole lot of value but what you want to know is the number of joules because the number of joules will indicate typically how well it keeps time the lower the number the poorer amount of ability it keeps time and the higher number of joules generally it keeps better time and therefore is more valuable you can get up into the 20s or 30s sometimes or even higher in joules most of the time a higher quality watch is going to have somewhere around 17 to 21 joules 23 joules something like that the last one of these watches i'm going to show you today let's just give you an example again this is i'm trying to move that out of the way we're looking at a ladies bowl of a watch from probably the circa 19 oh probably 1960s maybe even in the 70s it's possible this is from the 50s but flip it over the first place i always look again is that the latch what do we see on the latch here um the latch just basically says uh chrysler and it says um 1 20th 10 karat gold filled gf so gold filled so the band itself is 1 20th 10 karat gold then if we look at the back of the watch itself the casing it says bulova 10 carat rolled gold plate so we're in luck here both the band in the back and the bezel or the bezel of this watch is got a gold content in it so that that bodes well for reselling this thing i buy these at thrift stores at yard sales and estate sales at swap meets and things all the time for one two dollars five dollars the most usually and a lot of times people don't know where to look again but that's not going to be your problem anymore is it i'm going to end this little tutorial today with just a few kind of oddity items um again to kind of push the point that there are a variety of different things you need to keep a lookout for for gold content now this particular ink pen does not have gold or silver in it but i put this here for two reasons number one i bought this the other day for like 25 cents the brand is called cross that's a good brand for ink pens and mechanical pencils so if you come across those those hold value old mechanical pencils regular pencils ink pens fountain pens and i say old vintage i'm talking like 19 60s and before especially older ones from the early 1900s oftentimes have gold content in them if the tips of fountain pens that are gold colored a lot of times will have gold content you just have to look again that's where you would search to see sometimes you open them up and look on the inside okay this right here is an old vintage pocket knife in this particular knife it's kind of got this cool uh etched design here i don't know if that was supposed to be sort of like a a creative take on a person's letter for someone's name or if that's just a design but it says a portion of what actually looks like a broken old uh pocket watch chain but this chain itself has some markings on it i'm trying to remember where that was at well maybe this one doesn't but you can see right here the hinge of the knife itself if you turn it it says gold filled so this particular we don't know what the you know the uh purity of the gold is but this knife aside from being vintage and being a pocket knife both of which um cause this to be more collectible it has also got gold content in it so it's got several things going for it i bought this for five dollars actually at a place where i was reselling from another reseller and that reseller didn't even know that this had gold content and i was i was very surprised by that next up is this which is a an antique pair of eyeglasses now these eyeglasses are prescription eyeglasses but they're really cool you can see this awesome etch work design on the upper rim let me try to zoom in on that for you okay here we go so you can see that really pretty what you may or may not be aware of is that a lot of these old glasses have gold content in them or silver content this particular one has gold content the two places that you're most likely to find the information you're looking for is on the side here so i'm going to pull this up here and see if i can zoom it well enough and let me do this okay so you can see right here it says 1 2 10 12 carat gf gold filled so both this piece all of it the whole frame is 1 10 12 carat gold filled the other place you want to look is the inside bridge of the eyeglasses if we scroll up here here we go also it says 1 10 12 carat gold filled full view these things sell regularly on places like ebay for you know between 15 18 20 sometimes more dollars apiece so if you find these at antique stores or something they're like well they're broken how about five dollars jump on it folks it's got gold in it last step old rings and jewelry that are out of style that have old kind of but maybe our standards today ugly designs sometimes are just sort of like overlooked or they think well that's just ugly so it must be costume jewelry what we have here is a bunch of what i would call diamond chips or what they call millies which is 0.1 carat or less so 1 10 of a carrot or less than that tiny chips so small it's really hard to even get a diamond tester in there but if you look you always want to look on the inside of the ring everywhere right below where the the stones would be all the way on the inside all the way around so if we take this particular piece for example i'm going to zoom in here and we start we look here we start rotating this way very quickly you're going to see let me flip it around so you can see it here you can see right there it says 10k so this over here says nvnv is probably the designer's initials or the company's manufacturer's initials this is a 10 carat gold solid gold ring with diamonds all over it um i bought this for 10 dollars uh recently gold prices have gone up quite a bit because there's some some rough stuff going on in the world right now that's scaring people and so they're getting out of stocks and they're getting into more commodities and things like uh gold which has been a standard our country for really since the beginning this thing right here uh i could it's you know it's a size probably around the side we see it's right around the size five and a half to right size six uh women's ring this would go for probably in the 100 150 range you might get more for it than that but certainly for 10 bucks that's a great little buy folks i wanted to show you this next part to basically hit home or try to communicate to you to not shy away from larger larger objects i like to go with small objects because they're cheaper and easier to ship but it doesn't mean i completely ignore larger stuff when i find it what you're looking at here are a couple of admittedly ugly objects what is that i mean you know that this is made to look like a high heel right boom and it's black this right here it's hard to even tell what it is but what you're looking at here folks is some sort of custom made looks like an art piece this is made to look like leaves it's three-dimensional it's it's been hammered out okay you know not super thin thin but not terribly thin still has some decent weight to it it weighs about 160 grams and this one right here weighs around 60 to 70 grams okay um i bought these they were ten dollars a piece because i just had the sneaky suspicion that these were made of silver you don't come across things like this very often but again the telltale signs of silver is the way that it tarnishes over time and also the way it feels uh anybody who deals with jewelry uh very often fine jewelry will get really good at just visually identifying certain metals and uh so what i did was i got this i brought it back to the warehouse i thought you know what it's weird enough that even if it's not made of any sort of precious metal i'll probably be able to sell it and get close to my money back i'll count it as a loss in in that case and just chalk it up to some experience and learning a learning process but i spent a lot of time folks looking all around this remember i've said you know you want to definitely heavily inspect things that you suspect are made of precious metals it took me a long time i looked all over this thing it's black it's ugly who would ever want this rusty right well let me show you what i found it took me a long time but i finally found it i'm going to try to turn it you see right here on the corner right here um let me take my little thing here well here's my finger right here right there folks this tiny little piece you bring it back into focus here that thing is a partial poorly made stamp that says s-t-e in the beginning of an r okay so somebody tried to stamp this thing because of the curvature of this it was hard to get that stamp on there correctly they just got a tiny little bit on there and said well that's that's good enough that's supposed to say sterling sterling silver this is a solid piece of silver it's better than 65 or so grams this is 60 grams so what we're looking at is 210 to 230 grams something like that of pure of sterling silver and again let's just say it was 220 we're talking about 170 180 dollars in silver scrap okay but something like this was made by an artist i guarantee it and i'm gonna need to do some research if i can find who the artist is it could be someone semi-famous it could be their pieces could be sought after who knows it could go for hundreds or thousands of dollars if it was somebody very well known or sought after um sort of a word of caution on something like this until i know what i'm going to do with this whether or not it's valuable or not i'm not going to polish it even though it is ugly as sin uh people who collect ant pieces of silver oftentimes do not want them to be touched if it's a piece of art they want to know that the artist touched it uh they want to see that it was handled uh and they don't want it to be disturbed so i'm going to wait on that but this just goes to show you that even things that are ugly can have high value do not pass them up make sure you do your due diligence and take a close examination of it before you move on i hope you learned a trick or two today folks that you can employ when you're looking for costume and fine jewelry good luck out there see you soon rusty rusty rusty ham2 rusty rusty rust [Music]
