hi guys this is sophie she's cavalier king charles spaniel and she is going to get a full groom so let's get busy we'll start with a nice shampoo and conditioning treatment when applying shampoo to the face i put the shampoo in my hands and spread it then i put my hand on top of the head and under the chin and start working the shampoo up onto the face this prevents the shampoo from running into the eyes and allows me full control of where the product goes this is one of the reasons why i prefer to use products that are best used full strength this allows me to have a thicker product that i can control the direction of a tub brush works really good for working the shampoo all the way down to the skin on these really thick coated flat coated and shedding braids it also feels really good to the dog so i work the conditioner well into the long ears and all the furnishings and using the tub brush i work the conditioner all the way down to the skin loosening up the shedding undercoat so so [Music] i use a good quality ear cleansing solution in the ears i fill up each ear canal with the ear cleansing solution this will dry up any moisture that may have gotten into the ears loosen up wax and help to remove debris i rub the base of the ear with the solution in let the dog shake its head then wrap the dog up with a nice warm towel i blow dry the dogs by hand using nice warm air this feels really really good to the dogs [Music] one thing i like to do with these dogs with shorter muzzles and big eyes and dogs with extremely thick hair on their faces is use cosmetic pads these are just plain dry cosmetic pads and i use these for drying the face because i can wrap them around my finger i can easily get in between the eyes and on the bridge of the nose and up over the eyes and these just really soak up that water without getting a towel all up in there where it can cause an eye abrasion these are really gentle i also use these to wipe the ear cleaner out of the ears they wrap nicely around my finger and can get in there and just dry all that up it's very important to care for dogs with pendulous ears using a good quality ear wash recommended by your veterinarian and keeping the ears clean and dry and always use a separate ear pad on each ear don't follow from one ear to the other it's time to trim her nails that's it we'll use a nail grinding tool to smooth the edges using a 30 blade i am going to trim the pads of her feet [Music] so [Music] i'll repeat this on all four feet cavaliers are supposed to have nice flat hair on their backs and coming down their sides many times you will notice that the hair is all curled and flipped up the way that you deal with that is using a carding tool and a pumice stone the technique is called carding you hold the skin taut by pulling a fold of skin up into your hand this does not hurt the dog it just stretches the skin tight and then you gently go through the coat in a combing action and this removes all this light-colored shedding hair from underneath if you do not hold the skin tight ahead of the carding tool then what happens is it's uncomfortable for the dog because it drags and pulls the skin with it and you don't want to do that that's why you hold the skin tight you want to be sure to go down into the hips and over the big thigh muscle coming down into the side of the dog through the neck down over the shoulder muscle good girl you can lift up the ear and come into this hair coming around the front of the dog's neck good girl i come down into the angle going under the shoulder to set the legs nicely up under the dog i want to show off this pretty shoulder she has and there's fluff that comes down the front of the leg i lightly go over the front of the leg being careful because this is a bony structure you don't want to push too hard with your tool a tool like this works really good on getting through some of this longer thicker hair helps to remove the shedding undercoat after that you can use your pumice stone and again holding the skin top drag this over the outer coat what this is good for is it removes more of the coarse guard hairs that want to lift up and out the reason why this is important for your dog who sheds with flat coat such as a cavalier a golden retriever a cocker spaniel a springer spaniel a britney spaniel is because the shedding hair tends to clog up the follicle when that happens the good coarse guard hairs are inhibited from growing out because the the follicle is blocked by the soft fluffy undercoat that is stuck in the follicle so by removing that hair out of the follicle it allows the space for the good coarse darker colored guard hairs to grow out otherwise you end up with a proliferation of this and not enough of this again i'm exposing her shoulder more coming down the front leg this gives her a nice outline where you can actually see the dog and not just a bunch of hair on this side of the dog you can actually see the form of the dog you can see the shoulder outline you can see more of the back leg and the hawk placement it really helps to show off your dog if you clear out some of that hair another thing you want to pay attention to is any soft light colored fluffy hair on these cheeks you can take your pumice stone and gently remove that soft light fluffy stuff that ruins the look of the face as you can see a lot of work gets done on a cavalier and if you do not do this work you will not have this nice dark red coat that lies down beautifully you will have a bunch of bunched up flipping up hair so grooming isn't only hair cutting grooming isn't only trimming grooming is taking proper care of the coat the way it's supposed to be cared for the carding techniques that you see here are something that every pet owner can easily do at home i recommend doing this approximately once a week going through your dog's coat naturally you won't get this much hair out if you do it every week this is not something that a groomer can accomplish in the grooming salon once every three months or so this coat must be maintained on a regular basis to lie flat thank you for watching be sure to like this video and subscribe
