so i cut it up made a quilt i even took the collar and took it off with her name in it from the nursing home [Music] [Music] but it is my grandmother's housecoat perfect that is a good story hi friends we are at silver dollar city again in brampton missouri you guys know that this is one of our favorite places in the whole world all the years we've been going here we didn't know that there was a little quilt shop at silver dollar city so we're gonna go ahead and check that out and take you guys with us [Music] good morning hi how are do you love working here absolutely absolutely i finally got the job doing what i love i always did this on my off hours you know yeah but uh so you're a quilter then oh yeah years and years of it are you comfortable being on my little youtube video so what are you doing right now um actually i am cutting out pieces for a quilt that i'm about to make so do you have like a pattern actually yes this time a lot of times i don't but usually i do here this is the pattern it's going to be a jelly roll called tiddlywinks tiddlywinks yep that's right who doesn't want to make something called tiddlywink i know and i got this cute little tool here i don't know if you've ever seen a rotary cutter it's like a razor blade nice and i can cut very precisely around that thing and uh anyway i just things have gotten so much easier now we're not really in the 1880s i just thought i'd let you know so things have gotten way easier now for quilting now who made the the little tiny quilts over there oh that one that one was done by um a lady in joplin okay we have somebody that does a lot of our samples because um we just don't have first of all we don't have the quilting machine here right that beautiful quilting yes um anyway the lady miss miss cade actually retired this year and uh and she found a new lady to take over who happens to have two quilt shops in joplin oh i might as well give her a plug one is the fabric merchant one is bittersweet in joplin uh anyway when miss kate retired she went ahead and said sure i'll take it over silver dollar city didn't want to lose it nice nice yeah that's gorgeous who makes who makes these is that that same lady that makes things well i made those you made these burp pads and bibs yes oh cool like i said we're trying to get more ready-made stuff in yeah because not everybody that walks in here knows how to sew but we sit around and sew all day long did you make all the little thread catchers and um no i think debbie made those there's three of us that actually work here um and i think debbie made those we all sort of have our own little specialty things that we like to make i love these aprons we have some great apron patterns what are these those are hot cold corn bags oh yeah put them in the freezer right yeah and put them down by your feet when you're freezing cold that's right yes i've had i've had those over the years but they weren't this cute i would just put corn in a sock and tie the sock but that's way cuter than my old sock who gets to choose your fabric uh the um the lady that bought the place the lady that uh is leasing this place now her name is robbie triplett and she's actually a moda representative these little stuffies are so cute yeah it's kind of a labor of love it is you know because if i made that for my kids which i can and i have my kids are silly they tell me their quilt saturation anyway if i made that for my kids i certainly couldn't pay a thousand dollars to give to my kids i just couldn't right you know right but i'll give them my labor that is funny how quilting works because if if a quilter makes a quilt if they sell it they want a lot of money for it and they should so they want to sell it for a lot of money or they're willing to give it away but they don't want to sell in for just a little bit and i totally get that yeah totally get that [Music] so [Music] do [Music] well anyway uh my grandmother taught me to sew when i was like eight or ten and i started out with barbie clothes and uh you know little crafts and things like that and then i sewed my own clothes so it uh sometime when i was 12 or 14 i came up to silver dollar city and i happened to see granny quilter and she because i came into her little store like this and she says come sit down with me she was actually at a quilting frame and she goes here's a needle and thread why don't you go ahead and help me out she's the one that taught me to go down up down up down up back stitch down up down up down up back stitch and is this your grandma or no no this is for any quilter that works here here okay right i didn't know who she was but anyway and then we came back like two years later and i saw her again and after that i started quilting so it was kind of like neat that i ended up back here being granny wilbur i love that well so you're great i'm granny quilter now fabulous i'm granny quilter now but the other story i was going to tell you is about my grandmother i actually was very close to my grandmother and i went into the navy and she got very sick and i came back for her funeral and six months later i came back home for an actual leave i just came home for a few days right before she died and i stayed for the funeral well um i came back and i said mom did grandma leave me anything and she goes oh i'm sorry we cleaned out her house and everybody either took stuff they wanted or we gave it away and i'm like no way i have nothing of grandmas for me and she goes well let me see what i can do and she went into her closet and she got this really ugly housecoat that she wore at the nursing home and i'm telling you it was salmon pink it was lime green it was neon yellow and some other colors that were just awful and do you know i had that thing hanging in my closet for 10 years because i couldn't figure out what to do with it and then one day i decided well i'ma cut it up put it into some kind of a quilt so i cut it up made a quilt i even took the collar and took it off with her name in it from the nursing home hazel and i applicated on the back and i want you to know it is one of the ugliest quilts i have i thought you're going to say it's one of the most beautiful it is one of the ugliest quilts i have but it is my grandmother's perfect i know that is a good story i love that well aren't you so blessed and lucky to work at silver dollar city and i can't believe i'm here well we love your little shop thank you all right we hope you guys enjoyed that this place was so much fun we can't believe we've missed it all these years well we're gonna go play in silver dollar city and until next week this is grassroots living reminding you to get down to the grassroots of what makes you happy
