Had a chance to run the Gen 5 19 and 17 in the USA recently. Trigger has a slightly better break than the Gen4, the reset is much more noticeable/snappier.

I have slightly above average hands, and the higher cut trigger guard and no finger groves on the 19 definitely made the gun comfier than a 19 Gen4/3. That will come down to the personal shooters preference though. People who are definitively saying that groves/no groves is better than the other somehow are just biased. There is no best option.

Not sure the bevel on the front of the slide was needed.

The ambidextrous slide lock is nice, but unless you shoot offhand or are a lefty, not really noticeable. Good for the wrong-handed shooters out there I guess. ;)

The addition of SKUs with different sight options from factory is nice. I'd definitely go with some metal night sights either way though. Trijicon sights are life.

I prefer the Glock 19 Gen4 FS. Metal sights, extended controls, front slide serrations, proven track record, prevalent aftermarket. If the grooves fit your hand, or you don't mind doing some light frame modification it's the best CC 9mm. IMO.

[Music] hey guys welcome back today we're out of the range with two new handguns from two juggernauts in the concealed carry market the first handgun I want to show you guys today which I've talked a little bit about already is the generation 5 Glock 19 and just released in the last couple of days the new Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 compact the compact is pretty much almost the exact same size as the Glock 19 this is a handgun many of us have been asking Smith & Wesson for this handgun has been out now for about 12 years as the M&P product line and yeah they just keep making either full-size pistols or super compact pistols they're hardly under Gunawan they for whatever reason resisted making a pistol the same size as the Glock 19 which is arguably the most common most loved most used carry pistol in the United States so finally Smith & Wesson has stepped up their game they're starting to get competitive and they're offering a handgun that's pretty much identical in shape and size to the Glock 19 what we're going to do today in this video is take a closer look at the two pistols and see just how similar or dissimilar they are in various dimensions and talk a little bit about the shoot ability in the ergonomics so let's get started and we'll do some shooting first and then we'll come back and we'll start taking a closer look at the two pistols like the tree [Music] when I first learned of the Glock and was old enough to get one and shoot it would have been the early 90s and at the time the ergonomics didn't feel like anything else that was on the market like the 1911 which I owned back then I really like some of my Smith & Wesson handguns even though they were very straight grip they still still felt more ergonomic to me than a glock 17 of the era felt but years later the Glock 19 came along and it seemed to be about the perfect size for concealed carry and I picked one up and I shot it and shot it and shot it and with use the gun actually became economically baby I became so used to it that I didn't care anymore that it was just kind of a squared off grip and just really didn't feel good to me initially by the time I got used to shooting it I pick it up and go alright man now this feels like right at home I could shoot I think that's true of anything you can get used to shooting anything so I worked past the ergonomics of the Glock pretty quickly the other issue that some folks would have with the Glock is the fact that they have all polymer frame they have a very low mass frame that if you're not an experienced shooter and you don't have a good grip on the gun a good support of the gun you can get what's called a limp wrist malfunction I never had that problem but other people had and I think it's pretty well documented at this point it does happen but aside from that the guns were just known for reliability and I would have to say that I can't remember ever clearing a malfunction from any of my Glocks just out shooting and having fun that wasn't related to ammunition or a bad magazine spring or something like that they've just been insanely reliable handguns for me so again I carried it for a decade or more and I really liked the Glock 19 I stopped carrying the Glock I moved over to a cz which is far more ergonomic and then I went back and started shooting a Glock about a year later I hadn't really shot one much and I picked it up and I felt it and it's like gosh this thing felt awful to me but shooting it it came right back I got used to it so it's one of those things where if you're a new shooter and you're looking for a new carry gun I've ran into very few people that have picked up a Glock 19 and said oh this thing thing feels great man this feels better than any other gun I've ever picked up but if they do say oh this feels great and it's the first gun they touch they pick up something like an M&P they're gonna go oh no the simin p feels much better that's because the M&P does have a more ergonomic grip to it I think most people would agree this is an acquired taste but once you acquire that taste a gun will serve you very very well and the Glock 19 served me very well for many years so the guns really really utilitarian has a minimal number of parts it's very easy to fully strip it down yourself and clean all the the inner workings of the gun the sights are easy to install or remove I do recommend that like this Gen 5 comes factory with a base model with the plastic sights ditching those immediately and getting some good metal sights at a minimum I like night sights other than that the guns just feel and I think look good it's kind of funny well I used to think in the early 90s was ugly I look at it now looks very good to me and it's very utilitarian I'm gonna do a little shooting here at the gin.5 on that challenge target over there that's about 20 yards away or so screwed one up there but the guns just shoot well for me I want to pick this thing up and shoot a little bit it feels really really good the Glock 19 I don't think anybody could argue it's not the most popular carry handgun on the US market it's extremely popular and it's partly due to its size and partly due to its reliability and its reputation of reliability people have just come to love the Glock 19 and I think rightly so put one more magazine through it today we're just out here shooting some range ammo it's freida munitions 115 grain bolts they're new stuff there is a code down in the description guys that you can use they'll give you six percent off everything in the freedom store I don't get any kickbacks it's just something that freedom does for my viewers as a thank you so if you go shopping for some range amo consider freedom it's a very affordably priced but you use that six percent discount code and it's even more affordably priced and now we're just gonna shoot the big square steel target from challenge that we use all the time so the guns are a hundred percent reliable with most anything you feed them the gin five I also want to note has the slide stop slide release on the right side of the pistol for left-handed shooters and if you're a left-handed shooter you can quickly and easily reverse the magazine release on the gun so then Smith & Wesson for about 12 years now they would they just wouldn't make the right sized handgun I always told people even when I was carrying a Glock people that were just getting into shooting they would say I want a striker-fired polymer gun which one do you recommend and I say I carry a Glock but it's an acquired taste I highly recommend you go try a Smith & Wesson M&P and that's because the ergonomics are far better on the M&P and they've also earned reliable reputation for reliability but I've always wanted them to build the right sized handgun and for whatever reason they just refused to do it they built full-sized mp's they built the little scrunchy ones that you know had the really short truncated grips like a Glock 26 and I nothing in between and neither one of them were ideal for carry and I know a lot of you're going to say does a quarter of an inch really make that much difference yes it really does especially when you carry appendix or when you're trying to hide something under a t-shirt every fraction of an inch counts and that Glock 19 size is perfect I think most people that carry a concealed weapon will tell you the Glock 19 is probably the most ideal carry gun simply from a size standpoint not just from a reliability standpoint when it comes to shoot ability there are other handguns out there like the M&P which I think most new shooters would find be more suitable now I think I shoot a Glock better than shoot an M&P I've also as I've already noted replaced it with an apex trigger the apex trigger is something I have to do to all of my MPs because every single one even with the improved 2.0 trigger I still think the factory triggers suck I can't shoot well with them whatsoever it's that short length of pole it just it's a very short distance between the face of the trigger and the backstrap here and for my large hands it just doesn't work well when I put a trigger like the apex in there that moves that face the trigger further out I can shoot the gun a little bit better but the Glock still shoots a better form that's probably because I've been shooting the Glocks for well over a decade so when it comes down to recoil management muzzle rise the guns feel nearly identical to me both of these guns handle about the same I'll say that the ergonomics are marked markedly better on the M&P the gun seems to set a little deeper in my hands however this texturing on the 2.0 feels like sixty grit sandpaper I would highly recommend finding the grip panel that you want the entire grip back strap here is replaceable it comes with several to choose from in the box get the one you like and then maybe put something on it either mute the the the stippling the factory stippling or it doesn't feel like sixty grit sandpaper or put Talon grips on it the rubberized ones which I really like the feel of and it seems that the new adhesive that they're using all those Talon grips gives much better durability and longevity to those grips so right now I have them on a p10 C I'm trying out and I just ran them through the gauntlet the grips are still on the gun and hopefully that that stays true because I would like to put Talon grips on this M&P at some point because if I ever did decide to carry it I wouldn't want the 60 grit sandpaper up against my side shoot one more magazine out of this pistol now again it does have a slide stop slide release on the right hand side of the pistol for lefty shooters but what I will say is it takes more force to push this one down than it does the one on this side of the pistol for a right-handed shooter you can push it down but it's not nearly as easy to do on this side of the pistol there's a little bit of flex in its sheet metal slide stop and I found that using it left-handed can be done but it does require more pressure all right very very shootable little gun this handgun we've brought it out and shot at one other range session I got it sighted in I had to move that rear sight over just a little bit to get it centered but other than that the gun shoots great and you can see that I didn't really have to move that sight over all that much it's still pretty much centered on the slide but a little bit makes a difference all right so when it comes down to basic features both of these guns are nearly identical and feature set they both have ambi slide stop slide releases they both have reversible magazine releases the size nearly identical the width nearly identical but you have a slightly longer sight radius on the MMP because the rear blade comes all the way to the rear of the slide where the Glock has the rear sight set slightly forward is enough to make a big difference I don't think so but I do say that the serrations on the M&P give me a better grip surface I don't understand why Smith & Wesson did this half botched attempt at putting serrations in the front because as the frame widens right here even if you do get a hold of it you hit that that widening and it makes you it breaks your grip in the slide goes forward so at most you can do a press check and that's it some people I see like to run their slides or run their guns by grabbing the front slide and pulling all the way back I'm not one of those people I don't really care for front slide serrations simply because I don't use them but I really think this is a half-baked attempt by Smith & Wesson to do front slide serrations the rears though are really really good the Glock has a new finish on it they keep going through finishes but I've always been able to operate these really really well a voice had good purchase on the serrations the gen fours now have the option of having serrations on the front I really like that I hope they offer that on the generation 5 gun at some point but yeah in terms of being able to use it and stuff like that I think you know pretty much these two guns are evenly matched in the future Department the one thing I've noticed with this gun though is when you go to do reloads they've put this generation to cut out here now what they say it's for is to facilitate stripping a magazine out of the gun to clear the weapon during a malfunction all guns can malfunction okay even Glocks can malfunction they can malfunction we have a hard stoppage that requires you to strip a magazine that doesn't want to come out you have to use force to get the magazine out when I strip magazines I want to pinch the side of the magazine and pull it for me with the gun and you know what they call the workspace I can pull that magazine out by pinching the sides and pulling it many times you'll see guns have a taper or even sometimes a cutout right here where the plastic thins so you can get a hold of the side of the magazine and pull on it this to me is a very unnatural movement not something I would want to do i grabbing it like this or like this or with my finger is just unnatural for me I want to pinch the magazine and pull it out if you take a look at the Smith & Wesson you'll notice see how it's cut right there that little divot that gives you access to the Shelf of that magazine I can pull really hard on that thing to get a stuck magazine out and I'm not pinching it from the sides or I'm sorry from the front which is unnatural to me this makes far more sense but the other thing I noticed with the Gen 5 gun with that that deep scallop supposedly for pulling the magazines out which they put it in there I think because they flared the magazine well so much that it's actually flares out the grip frame and so the bottom of this grip actually flares out and they've done that so now it flares out so much you cannot get a hold of the magazine floorplate you you have to do it this way because they flared that mount in the mouth of the magazine well so much so I suspect that's why they put that back in there the problem is is that if this magazine only goes in if it goes in perfectly straight you can come at it this way and rock it back and you can get it in but if you come at it at a non perfect angle this way it hangs up on that cut out on a regular Gen 3 you won't have that problem and even having a round loaded won't fix it because it's snagging on the corner of the come in and hit like this and you push and then you have to kind of wiggle it around try to get the magazine to go in and that only happens on these Gen fives I found if you don't get that magazine angle just right so you really have to practice okay if you're going to use a Gen 5 because you don't want to come at you know when you're doing a reload come at it at an angle and get that magazine stuck and then fumble to try to get the magazine and the gun that cutout sucks all right I wish she hadn't put it in there all right let's do a little bit we're shooting with these guys then it's go tear them down and show you what they look like on the inside and then let's put a ruler next to these two guns and see if we can get some measurements on the dimensions and see just how similar or dissimilar they are let's get some measurements of the two guns and see how close they are to each other in terms of size I'm against you guys we've been shooting the gun so I'll show you guys it's clear and drop the magazine out of the M&P guns clear drop the magazine out of the Glock guns clear alright let's start off with the g19 let's start off with the length of the slide from the very end of the barrel to the very tip of the dovetail here okay because this actually sticks out little bit further than the rear of the slide and does count account for some of the overall length of the gun if I put this tape measure right up to the end of the barrel come back here falls just a Nathan inch shy of seven inches if I put a straightedge up against this where the dovetail is I have to eyeball this or it's the same because it's not touching and it looks like it's seven inches to the very rear of the grip frame it's also not worth noting that the grip of the Glock comes back further and actually sticks out further back here than the dovetail so the grip actually goes past the rear of the slide alright now let's take a look at the length of the MMP 2.0 compact put the muzzle right up to the end of the tape measure now it's a little bit different because this is more sculpted it has that forward cut to it so we're going to take right here to the back of the grip which is the furthest part and again I mean we're talking a sixteenth of an inch difference overall length the M&P is maybe a sixteenth of an inch longer than the Glock 19 all right let's put the magazines well first of all let's lock the slides to the rear and see how thick the slides are and easiest way to do that it's like one in 1/16 that's how wide the slide is let's take a look at the Glock doing the same thing right at one inch so it's just a little bit more narrow let me see if I can get it to stay here so you guys can see it just just a hair thinner so the Glock is just a sixteenth of an inch shorter and overall length and maybe just a sixteenth of an inch more narrow let's take a look at the height of the two pistols now but those sites themselves are gonna play a role in this right now the magazines are out the Glock has this I called a dingus you can I call everything on the gun I don't know what to call a dingus it's the disassembly tool it's optional but it's no longer than the base the base plate of the magazine so if we take that out the grips are about the same length if we put this back in or if you just want to throw it away which I wouldn't do because once you put the magazine in it's flush put the magazine into the Glock again the two are identical pretty much in height we have more of a flat surface here and the Glock looks like a little bit more of an angle but overall again they're the exact same height guys so the width sixteenth or so of an inch difference the length sixteenth of a note or so of difference in width and then the height when guys are they're pretty much the same if you take a look at them side-by-side setting next to each other and line them up again you can barely see a little bit more muzzle and nothing on the height the front of the trigger guards the same I mean the gun the guns I mean Smith & Wesson really did make it the same size as a Glock 19 which is a good thing I'm glad they did it cuz I do think the Glock 19 is probably the best carry gun in the United States you can really see how much they flared that magazine when you look at an angle you can see that opening there you can see how the the grip flares out it's not straight like it would be on another handgun so again I'm convinced that's why they put that cutout in the front so you can actually have something grab on to it that flare you can't get to the side of the magazine alright let's strip the guns down and see what the takedown looks like between the two guns and really it's almost the same first of all i'ma drop the magazine out lock slice the rear make sure the gun is empty it is alright I'm gonna go ahead and slightly [ __ ] it I'm going to pull the slide slightly to the rear pull down the takedown tabs and then pull the trigger and it comes apart alright set the grip frame down take your recoil spring out take the barrel out and the Glock is field-stripped very simple M&P you can use the dingus here but I've never taken a dingus out of one of my mm Peas I just leave it alone because I'm a trigger polar if you don't wanna pull the trigger you can actually trip this year with this tool I'm gonna Lock slide to the rear drop the magazine out make sure the weapons clear it's clear okay this one's a little bit different I'm gonna lock the slide to the rear I have a takedown lever I rotate and then I have to drop the slide and then as soon as the slide gets the rear of the the grip frame after public and the two slight apart and taking apart from there's just like the Glock you'll notice it doesn't have the double nested recoil springs this is a simple spring and it's worth noting that the spring on the M&P is a captured spring on a metal guide rod and the nested springs of the Gen 4 Engine 5 Glocks are on a polymer guide rod the only time I've seen a failure with the Glocks is under extreme use I've never seen one just fail I think a buddy of mine in mid 90s had he had a 40 that that failed on him other than that I don't think I've ever seen one fail I've seen people 2,000 round torture tests where the polymer fails in the guide rod but under normal use I've not seen one break except for that one time my buddy had one break and that's many many years ago Smith & Wesson's I've never seen one break but again this guns been around for you know 36 years this one's been around for 12 years at least the basic design put it back together just drop the barrel in take the blue part the spring is painted blue put it at the end of the muzzle there and now I'm just gonna go ahead and slide the slide onto its receiver there lock it to the rear and flip that lever and she's ready to go do some shooting with the Glock same thing drop the barrel in take the fat into the spring put it in the front push on the rear until it sets all the way down on its perch slide the two sometimes together just pull it back and let it go and it automatically pops its locking mechanism in place so the final verdict the two handguns are nearly identical in size if there is an advantage to be had it's by the Glock it's slightly more narrow and it's slightly less long by about a sixteenth of an inch otherwise I call them equal in length and in height and with both the latest generation Glock and aleeah's generation Smith & Wesson handguns do have adjustable replaceable back straps the M&P uses back straps that come around on the side which gives you a little bit more birth that you can control so you can have back straps a little bit thicker that fill your hands more the Glock just has back straps that you can clip on that increase the length zine but not so much the width okay but it's a personal preference thing another thing I find interesting about both handguns well it's not really interesting it's just something I want to share with you guys the Glock 19 can use the Glock 17s magazine it's bigger brother and the M&P 2.0 compact can also use its bigger brothers magazines the 17 round magazines right now I have a 15 round magazine in the gun if I put a full-size 17 round magazine and a gun you'll notice that there's a little bit of dead space right there alright well when you buy this gun it comes with two of these in the box and these are little sleeves that you slide over a standard 17 round magazine and now you have a full grip on the gun so if you guys like to shoot seventeen round magazines that's probably the preferred way of doing it now how useful these in self-defense and keeping these on spare magazines I don't know I'll leave that up to you I probably would just leave this off and use the 17 rounders as backup spare magazines and a pouch if I were carrying extra magazines and leave the 15-round magazine in the gun for carry for the most concealability what I thought that would be something that would be interesting to point out all right guys let's try to sum things up this afternoon regarding these two pistols which one I think may be a clear winner if I was going to pick a winner but first let's talk about the ammunition fired this afternoon we fired two different flavors of nine-millimeter both of them 115 grain ball ammo one of them has a traditional brass case and the other has a brass plated steel case alright so one steel case one's brass case both affordable lines of ammunition from freedom just standard range ammo it's not very hot at all and again down below I do have a six percent off code if you guys want to use it I get no kickbacks it's just a favor they do for my viewers so the two guns how do they stack up you know what guys it's going to boil down to personal preference both of these handguns I think are top tier carry guns I'm really happy that Smith & Wesson finally decided to make a Glock 19 sized pistol that was my biggest complaint aside from the trigger about the M&P series of handguns they just didn't have the right size they had a full size and they had the M&P 9c which only held 12 rounds I had the stumpy little grip and I don't like handguns that are really fat with my fingers hanging or the bottom and that's what I had with the MP the 9c version of the handgun so there's this middle ground that they were missing and they finally filled that gap with this new 2.0 compact series of handguns so I'm very happy to see that I do think my brain tells me if this gun feels better in my hand but I still shoot the Glocks better now keep in mind I have literally over a decade of experience shooting Glock handguns and so I'm just used to them even though my brain says this feels under Gunawan so the sand gun in my hands is it speaks for itself I shoot the Glock better so what does it mean for you everybody shoots a gun differently if the M&P shoots good for you by the M&P if the Glock sure favorite brand flavor whatever buy the Glock it really does boil down to personal preference I think both handguns have performed flawlessly with the exception of this handgun if you follow me on Instagram the third round fired I did have a failure to feed but after that no problems I did clean the gun up and put some CLP on it on both handguns and they functioned flawlessly since and we're talking hundreds of rounds later so I don't have any concerns about the reliability of this little pistol I just had that one hiccup in the beginning the only other thing I'd say about the Smith & Wesson is I hate the triggers so you'll notice I very quickly put an apex trigger on this gun but despite that I still don't shoot it quite as well as I shoot this Gen 5 Glock 19 now the Glock 19 I've already made clear my feelings on it in terms of what it brings to the market or to the table with this latest generation you know go watch that video if you want to hear me discuss that all in all it's still just a Glock you could put a Gen 2 in my hands 19 and this Gen 5 in my hands 19 model and blindfold me and I'd shoot them both I couldn't tell you which one was which I don't all the stuff that the Glock fans are talking about oh it has you know different geometries and spring rates and pre tension Springs it's gonna last for 50 years longer and all this craziness I've never seen a Glock really fail especially any one of the internal Springs in the last 20 years I've been around them and shooting them so it just boils down to this is a Glock okay it really hasn't changed much and that's evidenced by the fact I can still shoot it like I can my Gen 4 is Gen threes gentoos and I wish I had a Gen one because of the value of the handguns nowadays so anyway just pick which one works for you the one thing I will say negatively about both of these guns aside from the trigger on the Smith which I already addressed I actually did have a magazine failed to go into the magazine well because I hit it at the wrong angle and it didn't automatically write itself it snagged there I didn't know how much of a problem that would really be until today it was just a theory I actually did have that problem when I wasn't thinking about it so that it wasn't a reoccurring issue but it did happen once with the Smith if you lock the slide to the rear it has ambi controls in terms of the slide stop slide release with my right thumb I can very easily release that slide with my left thumb not so much so if you're left-handed shooter keep that in mind and this is true of all the 2.0 so that's shot the compact or the full-size this thing is much harder to use on the right-hand side of the gun for left-handed shooters the Glock on the other hand right inside or right-handed side drops just fine and then with my left hand drops just find equal pressure they feel exactly the same so if you're a southpaw you might want to consider the Glock series of pistols at the June fives because the the slide release is gonna work better as a slide release for you if you don't do that if you're a sling shot or it's not going to make any difference at all now the prices are going to be competitive so you choose alright I think it boils down to personal preferences guys if you'd like to support the military arms channel on our ongoing efforts to bring you guys good content and fresh content please consider swinging by becoming a patreon our patreon subscribers get blowout deals at copper custom they get behind-the-scenes information and pictures we do lots of giveaways and you know it really does help us here at the military arms channel support that's really allowed that to happen and allowing the channel to grow and bring more content if you'll notice recently we've been posting a lot more videos also guys please consider joining the NRA and getting in the fight right now we have a friendly House Senate and president I know some of you would argue those points with me but that's how I see it currently and we have an opportunity right now to turn back some of the gun laws that we're living under go ahead and use the link down below and spread that link around please and get other people and join the NRA if you're so inclined if you use that link money comes to me but 100% that money goes to hero hunt which is a 503 nonprofit organization that gets wounded warriors and first responders out in the field of hunting and back into life again it really does a lot of great work for some people that really need it and I give a hundred percent of my proceeds from the NRA to them all so guys please swing by and check us out at Copper custom if you would still like to support the military arms channel another way that's a great way to do it and that's copper custom comm guys thanks for all those years of
