Matthew 14 beginning in verse 22 the  inspired word of God reads as follows   immediately he made the disciples get into  the boat and go before him to the other side   while he dismissed the crowds and  after he had dismissed the crowds he   went up on the mountain by himself to  pray when evening came he was there alone   but the boat by this time was a long way from the  land beaten by the waves for the wind was against   them and in the fourth watch of the night  he came to them walking on the sea but when   the disciples saw him walking on the sea  they were terrified and said it is a ghost   and they cried out in fear but immediately  Jesus spoke to them saying take heart it is I   do not be afraid and Peter answered him Lord if  it is you command me to come to you on the water   he said come so peter got out of the boat  and walked on the water and came to Jesus   and when he saw the wind he was afraid and  beginning to sink he cried out Lord save me   Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took  hold of him saying to him oh you of little faith   why did you doubt and when they got into the boat  the wind ceased God sent the disciples to the boat   Jesus is walking on water but while the other  disciples don't recognize Jesus peter does peter   wants to go to Jesus Peter wants to follow Jesus  because peter knows that no matter how dark the   night no matter how high the waves no matter how  strong the wind or wet the water Peter knew that   it was safer out of the ship in a storm with Jesus  than being in a ship in a storm without Jesus I   can hear the other disciples saying but peter you  can't walk on water it's impossible it's foolish   you'll get wet you'll drown it's dangerous but  Jesus says come the boat is the safest place to be   but Jesus says come the rules of normalcy say  you should stay in the boat but Jesus says   come Peter shows his faith gets out of the boat  puts his life at risk holds his hand out to Jesus   begins to follow Jesus and he walks on water now  we all know the story and we often condemn Peter   because Peter in his following Jesus takes his  eyes off Jesus and he begins to sink that Peter   has a lapse of faith is we why he begins to fall  even the bible records Jesus as saying to Peter   oh ye of little faith but while we condemn Peter  let's give Peter some credit tonight because at   least Peter got out of the boat the rest of the  disciples stayed in the boats a little faith is   better than no faith at all if peter had little  faith the other disciples had no faith because if   you remain in the boat you'll never know what  it's like to walk on water being safe is easy   it's not hard work do what everyone else is doing  do what we've always done but change is hard   at least Peter got out of the boat which  is more than what the other disciples did   but yet how many of us stay in the boats without  ever exercising faith and walking in the fullness   of what God has for our lives Peter knew that  no matter the storms we face in life it's always   safest with Jesus I want to talk about the other  11 disciples still in the boat why are they still   in the boat two reasons number one because they're  afraid number two because they have a boat right   because when you have a boat on the water you  stay in the boat it's not rocket science it's   and here's what I mean when fear takes hold  of our lives we usually turn to something   that makes us feel safe even if it's not God so  let me ask you a very important question today   what's your boat see your boat is whatever  represents safety and security to you   apart from God if you want to know what your boat  is your fear will tell you just ask yourself this   when fear sets in where do I turn to instead  of God that's your boat it might be a parent   a friend a spouse your children maybe it's a  career your physical appearance your gifting   it could be your possessions money alcohol  self-pity maybe it's the amount of likes you   get on Instagram whatever it is God's telling you  today like Peter come get out of the boat seek God   with all of your heart and let him turn your fear  into faith through trusting him alone understand   I was reading the great Helen Keller some of  you may know her she was a great author a great   activist and she was asked the question because  she was born blind she was asked what could be   worse than being born blind she said having sight  with no vision don't be afraid to go out on a limb   don't be afraid to try something different don't  be afraid to get out of the boat but you know what   it's tough to get out of the boat there's 12 there  are 12 guys in the boat there's only one that gets   out of the boat just one the other 11 are like  white knuckling it there it's like we like the   boat Lord the boat's a good thing that the boat's  holding us up it's scary to get out of the boat   isn't it you know let me tell you some  things about the boat you know the boat   in their situation was a real boat the boat  in our situation today is not a real boat   it's a it's a symbol it represents things in  our lives see the the boat for you it represents   safety and security and comfort and when  you are asked to leave that which is safe   and secure and comfortable to do  what to step out on stormy seas   that's scary man this this boat this just seems so  safe and man I I think I don't want to leave here   because out there is the unknown I've never been  out there I don't know what that's like other   than sinking and drowning and so I don't really  want a venture out there Lord I like it in here   why don't you come in here and then we'll have  time together what is your boat and your boat is   hard to leave because of one thing and that's fear  fear makes it hard to leave the boat John Ortberg   says in his discussion of this passage he  says if you want to know what your boat is   you think about getting out and stepping  out on the water with Jesus and whatever   grips your heart with fear that shows  you what your boat is for most of us is   but for some you know what it is it's the fear of  failure hey it's hard to leave the boat because we   get afraid and the devil uses fear you know fear  is of the devil fear is not of God you're going   to fail you're going to falter God's not going to  see you through man you better stay in the boat   yeah it's going out of the boat that's for  crazy people you need to stay in here where   it's safe and secure and comfortable  boat's hard to leave because of fear   but remember this your boat is what's  keeping you from walking on the water   if you're going to walk on water you've got to  get out of the boat you can't stay in the boat   and walk on water you got to get out of the  boat in order to walk on the water with Jesus   you got to get out of the boat in order to walk  by faith and not by sight it's a step of faith   if you're going to get out of the boat and  walk on the water you've got to take that   step of faith into that which seems so scary hey  I'd rather be Peter and walk on the water two or   three steps than to be one of the other 11 staying  in the boat because Jesus is there to catch you   listen you get out of the boat whatever your boat  is you get out of that boat you stand on the water   and walk on the water with Jesus even if you have  a sinking spell you don't have to fear because he   will be there to help you and to lift you up and  none of us walks on the water perfectly we have   sinking spells but all we have to do is say Lord  save me Lord help me in this situation I want to   walk with you I want to walk by faith and not  by sight but man I've gotten my eyes on all the   things I see and the things I feel and the lord  says walk with me oh your little faith why did you   doubt get your eyes back on me so you can trust  him to help you even through any sinking spells   and I want to tell you today somebody here  today it's time for you to get out of the boat   somebody here today is in the comfort level of  the situation of their comfort level of life   you you're you're comfortable in your normalcy  comfort comfortable in your contentment your   regularity you're comfortable in your rebellion  your independence your worry your anxiety you're   comfortable in something but God is calling you  today to come out of that comfort level you got   to make a move get out of the routine get out of  living normalcy get out of accepting mediocrity   stretch the parameters of your life get out of  your comfort zone and move into your uncomfortable   zone stop sticking with the tradition and learn  to do something that requires you to make a move   and get out of what's comfortable for you some  of you won't do it because you're afraid of what   other folks may say you got to forget about what  other folks say and do what God tells you to do Peter got out of the boat and look how look listen  listen he got out of the boat in the midst of a   terrible situation they were afraid so he's he  he's been asked to do something in the middle   of doubters let me let me promise you something  that when you make a decision to do something that   God has told you to do and you begin to make the  moves guess what somebody's going to question you somebody's going to doubt you somebody's going  to call your names and call you crazy and   they're going to say all kinds of they're going  you don't have naysayers family members are not   going to support you friends are not going to  understand but guess what anybody can stay in   the boat that's the easy thing to do anybody  can stay in their comfort level anybody can   stay and do it the way you've been doing it  but it takes a person of faith and a person of   courage and a person willing to obey God to do  something that the rest of the jokers won't do   the time is over for you to allow others to keep  you in a boat that God has told you to get out of some of you trying to wait till everything lines  up trying to wait till everything's perfect when   everything's the way it's supposed to be but  people who do great things and achieve great   things in life often make a move when it's not the  convenient time to make the move I celebrate the   fact that God wants to help you do the impossible  but it requires you to get out of the boat   and god says he will empower you he walked  on the water he did what he could not do   he did what it is in his own strengths and  abilities he couldn't do by his own abilities   but we serve a God that will help you walk on  the water he'll help you run your own business   he'll empower you to do the work of ministry  he'll help you in your marriage I know you're   afraid to get married you've been dating the girl  for years he'll help you be a righteous husband   you've been afraid to have kids he'll help  you be a good parent you've been afraid to   do a lot of things but God will help you  supernaturally do what it is you can't do   there's gifts and callings that God has in you for  you to do you've been talking about it dreaming   about it you've been uh speaking to other folk  about it but you ain't done nothing about it   you gotta do something about  it you gotta climb out the boat   he's out of the boat and all of a  sudden he sees the wind the bible says beginning to sink he cried out lord save me yeah  you're gonna have some challenges in life you're   gonna have some issues it might get tight it might  get problematic but guess what we have the promise   of God that as long as I'm with Jesus he will  somehow make a way for me Jesus stretched out   his hand I like that and caught him there will  always be reasons for you to stay in the boat   there will be always voices telling you how  foolish how crazy how dangerous it is to step   out in faith and walk on water but the closer  I get to Jesus the closer I am to him saving me get out of the boat even if we begin to fall  even if it doesn't work out   the captain of the sea will not let us go under  get out of the boat and here is the good news   is that even when Peter was  faithless Christ remains faithful   peter peter took his eyes off Jesus but  notice that Jesus did not for one moment   take his eyes off Peter oh brothers and  sisters this is good news and the good   news is this that you might lose sight of  Jesus but Jesus never ever loses sight of you   Jesus saves Jesus saves beloved here we are  reminded that it is not your faith that saves   you ultimately be reminded that Jesus saves Jesus  saves and he saves he says by little faith he says   by great faith he says your faith may fluctuate  up and down in and out every moment of every day   the good news is is that the one in whom your  faith is placed does not change he is the same   yesterday today and forever while they  are straining in the middle of a storm   the bible says in the gospel of Mark Jesus come  down out of the mountain watch and the bible   says he stood and watched them there Jesus  we like the part when he walks on the water   but the text says and mark says that while they're  straining before he comes to them he stands and watches them there come on you know if you  would be honest with yourself that there are   times in your life when you were in the  middle of a storm and you're wondering   where Jesus is come on he's not where you  want him to be can I tell you where he is in fact the text implies not that he just sees  them not just he's watching them watch but he's   watching over them that's what the implication of  the text is and sometimes he doesn't come when you   want him to come but when he comes he'll be on  time sometimes he takes the time to come because   while you're in the storm he wants you to learn  some things in the storm that you wouldn't learn   if you weren't in a storm so he wants to see  how well you do so he's watching over you so   you'll learn how to navigate through storm learn  how to handle storm so he watches you there he   but he's watching over you the disciples are  out in the ship and seeing the storm on the   water and they're struggling this training and  they're in a boat and Jesus comes walking on the   water what shouts me is that what the fellows  are struggling with Jesus has under his feet just because you can't handle it doesn't mean  he can't handle it he's always under his feet   once they got back in the boat the storm ceased  whatever else that means to me it means that the   storm ceased because it was just a test the Lord  didn't send him out in the storm to drown them   he sent them out there to teach them what  is possible when you keep your eyes on Jesus   see the reason why God let you get in  storms it's because there are things   about god that you can't  learn unless you're in a storm I wouldn't know what faith in God can do and  there's some stuff you've learned about God   that you never would have known  if you had never been in a storm when you step out of the boat when he  got out of the boat it's like oh Jesus   you're all I got and you know what's wonderful  about that they're just some things about   Jesus you can't learn sitting in the boat you  only learn them when you step out of the boat   because you'll never know Jesus is  all you need until he's all you've got   maybe today you're listening and you feel like god  has left you alone maybe today you're listening   and you feel like you are facing storms  alone maybe today you're listening and   you're praying and you're going God where  are you why haven't you shown up yet   why am I walking through this why is life  tormenting me why am I going through the storm   of my life well let me share with you my  friends there are times you have to face storms don't be upset don't be disillusioned don't be  dismayed don't be fearful don't be alarmed don't   think as though God has abandoned you see the  bible says in the chapter 6 of the book of Mark   Jesus saw them he knew exactly where they were and  you see when Jesus put him in the boat in verse 22   and told him to go to the other side Jesus knew  full well what storm was coming he knew full well   and I'm telling you Jesus is ahead of every  curve of your life and he knows everything   that not only you're facing now he knows what  you'll face in the future and his eye is on you   Jesus withdrew maybe today you feel like Jesus has  withdrawn from you no friend he knows where you   are you may have to face some things you may have  to go through some things but don't be dismayed   Christ knows exactly where you are in the storm  of life verse 25 says that Jesus came to them   in the fourth watch of the night see my  friend that's why it's always too soon to quit   it's always too soon to give up you may be at  the 2 a.m hour of your storm you may be at the   2 hour and 59 minute mark of the worst storm of  your life but don't give up because god works in   the fourth watch amen don't give up and on the  fourth watch Jesus walked on the water to them verse 29 something happens to Peter that  I believe has happened to many of us   the bible says a strong gust of wind come and Peter looked at the wind and when Peter  took his eyes off of Jesus Peter began to sink   Peter began to look at what was beyond his  control could that be where some of you are today are you looking at circumstances of  life that you have no control over   are you looking at winds of life that have  you frightened and there's nothing you can do   somehow have you taken your eyes off of  the Lord Jesus and began to look at the   circumstances of life trust the focus upon  anything other than Jesus is sure to fail this is what faith is beloved  it is focusing on Christ   and the object and the focus of  our faith is Jesus it's Jesus
