all right who remembers what we talked about last week Matthew 16 be a little more specific about what that was the week before right wasn't we talked last week we talked about who do you say that I am sure asked his disciples who do men say that I am oh yeah we did talk about the signs before that happy right that was part of it but the the main message of it was who do you say that I am who who did Peter say that he was okay now you remember that Peter made this grand statement you or the Christ you're the son of the Living God then today we're gonna get into what happened shortly after that so there's kind of keep that in mind as we're looking at this because there's gonna be some contrast going on this show it makes the Peter makes this amazing revelation type of claim of ieshua you sure says flesh and blood has not revealed this to you but my father in heaven revealed this to you goodbye your heads with me Lord we love you so much we praise you we thank you for this time that we can come together and worship you and to hear your word brother pur that she would speak to us helped us to know you better help us to be better followers better disciples of us to be obedient your word into your spirit or we praise you me think in the name of Yeshua I mean I said Matthew chapter 16 is where we are still and starting verse 21 says from that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must the he must go from Jerusalem our go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and be raised up on the third day then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him saying are be it from You Lord this shall not happen to you but he turned and said to Peter get behind me Satan you are an offense to me or you are not mindful of the things of God but are the things of men and so last week Peter makes the statement that Yeshua you are the son of the Living God and then now he comes to issue and rebukes him argues with him it says no let that not happen you gotta be wrong and it really makes me wonder okay so do you believe your confession you know you just confessed that he is the son of God and now you're questioning his agenda your questioning has will his plan his purpose you're questioning whether he is knows what he's doing does that mean it's essentially what it's doing isn't it Yeshua says here's the plan I'm gonna be handed over to the scribes and elders and chief priests and they're gonna torture me and kill me but I'm gonna raise from the dead in the third day and so he's laying out the whole plan to him he's telling him exactly what's gonna happen and Peter there's no yeshuaa I mean he's he's telling him the gospel really you look at it that's that's the Gospel message isn't it our God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life that he died save us from our sins that he rose from the dead on the third day and then he ascended into heaven seated at the right hand and this is what we see all throughout Paul's teachings when he's talking about the gospel this is what he's talking about is the death burial and resurrection of issue ax ax Paul's writing so that's what we see the primary message of the Gospels is is that he came and he died and he rose from the dead and so Yeshua's laying out the gospel to his disciples and Peter's in disagreement with him about it so how could he and one moment confess the deity of Yeshua you were the Christ you're the son of the Living God and in the next moment argue and speak against him are there times in our lives when we do this this is something that's kind of been challenging me as I've been looking at this are the times in my life whenever I gots plans God's purpose God's will Oh Lord so what happens when our expectations don't line up with God's plan that's I think a lot of what was going on here Peter had a certain expectation of who the Messiah is what he was supposed to do this is why the Pharisees had a problem with Yeshua because he wasn't meeting their expectations right had certain expectations of who the Messiah was supposed to be and he wasn't lining up with what they thought he was supposed to be so they had a hard time receiving him I think Peter had a certain expectations going on and when you shoe said I'm gonna die st. Peter said wait a minute that doesn't match my plan that doesn't match what I think the Messiah is supposed to do right so what happens when our expectations don't match God's plan for our life I'm turning 40 next week okay I've had certain expectations in my life that over the past 40 years haven't always been met there been times in my life when things happen I'm like I was not anticipating this I was not planning for this I didn't look forward to this my dad died last year I wasn't part of my plan there are often times in our life when our expectations don't match what God is doing and so how do we respond did we keep faith do we respond in faith you would say you know what I don't understand what's going on but I'm gonna trust you I'm gonna follow you anyway or do we argue with him and say no God this is not this is not the way it's supposed to be this isn't what I had planned have you ever been disappointed or upset when God didn't do what you wanted him to do is God here to obey you is he here to serve you I think a lot of times we need to reevaluate the way we pray the way that we approach God when we come to him and prayer we are coming to him we are not unaware unworthy even coming to his presence is a holy God is the Almighty God and just the fact that we are even allowed to speak to him is phenomenal for someone to come and to demand something from him this and to try to twist his arm about something I or act like he's some kind of vending machine that you know if you up in a couple quarters he's gonna give you what you want the magic Genie that you gotta rub the lamp the right way and say the special words and and you're gonna get your wish that's not the way it works that's not how you talked to God that's not how if you were gonna stand before a man a dignitary a king or a queen or president or somebody in this world that's just a man you wouldn't talk to them like that you wouldn't go up to the president and make demands and tell me he has to do what you say so why do people treat God that way if they don't even treat human dignitaries that way if you come before the king you'd be expected to kneel right there our history that's been the pattern you come into the presence of the king you kneel if we look at Esther what she was not even allowed to just go into the presence of the king anytime she wanted she was the queen you're supposed to get an invite from the King to even come into his presence and when you do you're supposed to bring a gift you're supposed to kneel you're supposed to give him honor so when we come before the king the king of kings we should not come with arrogance and with this attitude that you owe me something God doesn't owe you anything he's already given you more than you deserve none of that was in my notes but I think it needed to be said it's important there are so many people teaching all stings i mean they're they're treating God you know the this name it claim it gospel that is being taught that oh you just all you have to do is just claim it just say this is mine in the name of God and it's yours really I've never found a verse in the Bible that says that I would just claim it and it's yours I want a Ferrari that's what some of these these guys are saying it's nonsense but how do you treat your king so what happens when you when God doesn't do what you want are you disappointed or do you realize he's God and I am NOT and he knows better than I do his ways are higher than my ways he knows where this roads gonna take me let his word be a light unto my path I am pinned to my feet and a light to my path I don't I don't know where the destination is but I'm gonna trust him that this roads gonna take me to a good place even though this is a rocky road even though this is a rough road even though it's not necessarily always comfortable I don't always get what I was hoping for but did this road I'm trusting that it's gonna take me where God wants me to be so Peters basically telling you schewe though your plan does not line up with my plan issue it says I'm gonna die you raised from the dead in the third day and Peter says no let it not be so this is what happens when we are seeking our will not his will right we get disappointed when things don't go our way but if we were seeking God's will we wouldn't have a reason to be disappointed would we because we would say this this is in your hands god this is your will your will be done I have no reason to be disappointed because your will is done this is done because God allowed it to happen right let me you know what this isn't my no it's either but quick No when a you have had some really good wisdom oops said in Chapter one naked I came from my mother's womb and naked I shall return there blessed the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away blessed be the name of the Lord and all this job did not sin or Church god with any wrong now can that be said about us when we go through situations that challenging in our life that don't go according to our plan can it be said that they did not sin nor charge God with any wrong first year I want to look at real quick all right in chapter 2 Jeb's wife said to him you still hold fast your integrity cursed God and Jobe responded and he said you speak as one of the foolish women shall we indeed accept good from God and shall we not accept adversity and all this job did not sin that we receive only good from God and not adversity that we receive only good from God not hard things not difficult things not trials and tribulations and persecutions you should told his disciples you will face our times you will face trials persecutions some of you will be martyred some of you be tortured he told them these things you didn't say your life is gonna be easy if you follow me he said the narrow road leads to life but that is a hard road so what happens when God doesn't do what we want when our plan doesn't match up with his plan did we do what Peter did do we challenge him do we scold him Ellen oh god you're wrong that's not the way it's supposed to work why did you show a call Peter Satan to get behind me Satan was Peter possessed by demons now No so why would he call Peter Satan I mean just like we just read early in this exact chapter he just praised Peter and said blessed are you Peter because this was revealed to you by my father flesh and blood didn't reveal this to you but my father in heaven revealed this to you that issue is the Christ the Son of the Living God and then few verses later he says get behind me Satan you are an offense to me for you are not mindful of the things of God what are the things a men so I believe that he called Peter Satan because he was listening to the voice of Satan he was speaking the same kind of message the Satan speaks and in fact what Peter said right here I believe lines up with what Satan was tempting yoshua with in the wilderness I want to look at that but he says he was walking in the flesh he was not mindful of the things of God is mindful of the things a man was walking in the flesh not in the spirit so we need to realize that we are either following God or opposing him or either for him or you're against him or either following him working against him there's there's no middle ground you're not with him you are against him okay that makes sense you can't be neutral you're either with your shoe or you're against him you're his servant or you various enemy you're in his kingdom where you're out of his kingdom so Peter was essentially saying you don't have to go to the cross yoshua said I'm gonna have to die and raised in three days and Peter says no you don't have to die there's there's got to be something else there's got to be another plan that's Peters objection to this you don't you don't need to die you don't have to die and I believe this is exactly what Satan was tempting yoshua with in the wilderness well let's look at this Matthew for burn in verse 2 it it says and when he had fasted forty days and forty nights afterward he was hungry now when the tempter came to him he said if you if if you were the son of God command these stones to become bread now listen to your shoe his answer he says it is written man shall not live on bread alone but every word that proceeds from the mouth of God so what is Satan tempting him with I do not believe he was tempting him with bread I believe he was tempting him was something else is not just about food with Yeshua's response it shows us the true intent of satan's temptation here man shall not live on bread alone but every word that proceeds from the mouth of God his response tells us what this temptation was the temptation as they're with Yeshua creating his own word his own will his own plan man shall not live on bread alone but every word that comes from mouth of God cygnus saying if if you're the Son of God you can create your own word you can create your own wheel your own plan you don't have to follow God's plan you see what this temptation is yoshua and John chapter 5 though he says I can of myself do nothing as I hear I judge and my judgment is righteous because I do not seek my own will but the will of the Father who sent me and he says similar things like this a number of times where he says I've come only to do the will of my father don't chapter 8 is another example of this Jesus said to them when you lift up the Son of Man then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing of myself but as my father taught me I speak these things now this verse is speaking about the crucifixion is it when you lift me up when you lift up the Son of man you will know that I do only the will of my father that's his response the will of the father was that he would come and die on the cross he says when you see me on that cross you'll know that I came to do the will of my father not my own when when he's lifted up it's talking about the crucifixion yeshuaa also expects the same type of obedience from us though in Matthew chapter 7 it says not everyone who says to me Lord Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven but he who does the will of my father in heaven it's just soda Peter you you do not have God's will in mind you don't have God's plan in mind you know you're not following God's will you're seeking after the will of men that was his response essentially he says you're an offense to me because of this not everyone who says to me Lord Lord will enter the kingdom but he who does the will of the Father in heaven and so we have to look at ourselves and say am i following God's will or am i trying to figure out my own during my own will Matthew 1250 says for whoever does the will of my father in heaven is my brother and sister mother this is what makes us issue Asst family this is what makes us kin to him this is what brings us close to him as doing the will of his father so Satan tempted you sure to make his own food and Yeshua said man shall not live by bread alone but everywhere that proceeds from the mouth of God compare that to what Yeshua said to his disciples in John four in the meantime his disciples urged him saying rabbi eat but he said to them I have food to eat which you do not know therefore the disciples said to one another has anyone brought him anything to eat and jesus said to them my food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work you see how this ties into the temptation of Satan if you're the Son of God turn these stones into bread do your will do what you want what have you guys ever heard I do not ever read this book by the way but I've I've heard people who have read this book who talked about it as the book was written by Anton LaVey it's it's satanic Bible and they say that the greatest commandment in the Satanic Bible is do what thou wilt do what you want do your will do your pleasure make your own way and that is that is satanic doctrine do your will Yeshua's doctrine is do the will of the Father you see the difference so when Peter rebuked Joshua he says get behind me Satan you do not have the will of God in mind you have Anne's plans in mind we're saying your doctrine is satanic because you're not following the will of the Father this should be really challenging to every single person because when we think about things that are satanic we usually don't think it's this right and we think satanic is you know people going and slaughtering children worshipping idols those kinds of things are the kinds of things we think of when we think of something satanic right man shall not live by bread alone but everywhere the procedure in the mouth of God he said so do you see how Satan's temptation so similar to what Peter was doing though Satan said create your own will and Peter said no Lord you don't have to die you could do something else ultimately Sainz temptation was to stop you sure for me crucified that was his the whole goal in this temptation I look at the next temptation Satan if he said and Matthew 4 verse 5 it says then the devil took him up into the holy city set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him if you are the son of God again if if you are the son of God throw yourself down for it is written he shall give his angels charge over you and in their hands you should they shall bear you up lest your dash your foot against a stone he's saying you don't have to die angels can catch you you don't have to die there's another way around this you're the son of God you don't have to die it can be prevented you see what he's saying here this is again a challenge to try to get you shouid not to go to the cross but it was Peter saying no Lord no Lord heaven forbid let that not be you don't have to die Peters echoing exactly what Satan was saying it's true that you sure didn't have to die right didn't have to he chose to he gave his life freely the Bible says he laid down his life for us he could have chosen otherwise but he understood that his death was necessary for us he understood that his death was necessary do you understand the weight of that decision he knew that man's sin requires the punishment of death Genesis 2:17 says but the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat or in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die this is the curse Sen Paul says Oh God Paul says that the the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life right the wages of sin is death the payment of sin is death you you earn death by sin is what Paul's saying well you sure came to take our punishment he died for our sins we see Romans chapter 5 it says or when we were still without strength in due time Christ died for the ungodly we're scarcely for a righteous man will one die yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die but God demonstrated his own love toward us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us much more than having now been justified by his blood we shall be safe from wrath through him let's skip down to verse 12 therefore just as through one man sin into the world and death through sin and thus death spread to all men because all sinned verse 18 therefore as through one man's offense judgment came to all men resulting in condemnation even so through one man's righteous act the free gift came to all men resulting in justification of life praised by one man's disobedience many were made sinners too also by one man's obedience many will be made righteous Paul is explaining why you schewe had to die because of sin because of Adam's sin because we have all sinned yeshuaa died he died to take our place he died for us he died in our place he took the punishment for our sins so no he didn't have to die we could have all died instead every single one of us from Adam until the last man who ever lives we would all have to die each one for our own sins but instead Yeshua died for us he took that punishment for us so that we could be given everlasting life so that we could be part of the resurrection so we could dwell in the kingdom with him so the second temptation no I'm sorry let me back up a second you sure also tried to explain this to Nicodemus he says in John 3 and as Moses lifted up the servant serpent in the wilderness even so must the Son of Man be lifted up hey so he's talking about the crucifixion to be lifted up on a pole on a stick like that serpent in the wilderness but for whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life so he is explaining to Nicodemus he's going to have to die that he's gonna have to be lifted up like the serpent he's gonna be put on a stick on a pole lifted up above everyone else talking about the crucifixion so the second temptation of Satan was to try to convince his schewe that he didn't have to die got yourself off of here let the Angels catch you you know I have to die and now listen to the third temptation very verse eight Matthew 4:8 it says and again the devil took him up on an exceedingly high mountain and he showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory and he said to him all of these things I will give you if you will fall down and worship Me hey so what is this temptation he says I can give you all the authority you want you don't have to die for this you don't have to die to reign on this earth they have authority over this earth there's a shortcut you don't have to follow God's plan you don't have to follow this crucifixion thing that the Father sent you to do you don't have to die all you have to do is just take a knee just bow down before me he's saying there's a shortcut you don't have to follow God's plan I can give you all the things that you want and Jesus said to him away with you Satan for it is written you shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve him only shall you serve that means you're not serving yourself by the way doesn't mean you're just not serving someone else because if your self-serving you're not serving God either Satan was essentially saying you don't have to go to the cross in all three of these ten tations make your own bread make your own will Oh for the angels to save you so you don't have to die bow down to me and I'll give you all the authority you want he's telling you sure you don't have to follow God's will for your life you don't have to follow this plan you don't have to go to the cross and so when Yeshua stands up in front of his disciples and he says I'm gonna be put on a cross I'm gonna be crucified I'm gonna die and in three days resurrected Peter says no you see why he said get behind me Satan because he has the exact same mindset the saint he was tempting Yeshua to go a different way he was trying to get you sure to do something otherwise something else besides God's plan so we have a little bit better understanding now of why you said these words to Peter you sure said you were an offense to me for your not mindful of things of God what are the things have been Oh in Romans says something kind of similar says for those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh but those who live according to the spirit the things of the Spirit for to be carnally minded is death but to be spiritually minded is life and peace because the carnal mind is enmity against God that means you're an enemy of God the carnal mind is an enemy of God why because it is not subject to the law of God nor indeed can it be so then those who are in the flesh cannot please God those who are in the flesh cannot please God it is impossible to please God when you're walking in the flesh and so he says you are an offense to me because you are not mindful of the things of God what are the things of men you were not mindful of spiritual things your carnal what he's saying right you're thinking carnally now usually when we think of someone who is a carnal mind would we think of we think of really bad stuff right someone who's perverted or someone who tells dirty jokes all the time or someone who they're I mean even maybe something secular you know like oh they just talk about sports all the time they're currently minded right or someone who just you know that just talked about all the movies they like to watch them that that's all they ever think about or video games or whatever you know we think well that's carnally minded that's worldly that's secular not thinking about God with things but Peter was talking about the Messiah doing ministry and Phil fulfilling his purpose as the Messiah it wasn't thinking and talking pervertedly he wasn't thinking and talking secularly he was talking religiously stalking ministry wise right he thought he was talking about God's plans so we see that carnally minded doesn't always mean what we tend to think it means if my mind is not following the mind of God if my mind is not following the will of God what is my mind doing in carnal I'm not being led by the Holy Spirit that I'm being led by my own my own mind my own will my own motions and desires so Peter was being led by the flesh right we're speaking carnally he was not being led by the spirit he had a carnal mind and you sure rebuked him for it there this is another ones things this week is I've been putting this together that's really challenged me and I hope a challenge is you guys to to just really use some more self-evaluation and say man where is my heart where's my mind am i walking with a carnal mind where's is my am i loving the Lord my God with all my heart soul mind and strength by following his will am I being obedient him as this is a challenge for all of us I think I think there's it's so easy for us to just do our thing they just have our own desires our own will our own agendas and just go with it never even think to ask God what do you want what is your desire what is your will am i doing by doing what you're asking me to do or am I just doing my own thing I think we all need it regularly think about that how often do we speak an act with a carnal mind as the carnal mind does not please him because it is not subject to God's law subject to God's will those are in the flesh cannot please God you are offense to me you are an offense to me for you are not mindful of the things of God but the things of men what is our mind full of be mindful of what is your mind full of is your mind full of the things of God and are you mindful of the things of God are you thinking about those things is your mind full sinful things and are you mindful of worldly sinful things so as he goes on Matthew chapter 16 verse 24 you got through three verses here that was I was deep it's thick all right Matthew 16 verse 24 says then jesus said to his disciples if anyone desires to come after me let him deny himself take up his cross and follow me or whoever desires to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it what profit is it the man if he gains the whole world yet loses his own soul or what will it what will a man give in exchange for his soul for the Son of Man will come in the glory of his father with his angels and he will reward each according to his works assuredly I say to you there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of man coming in its kingdom who says we must deny ourselves and take up our cross all of him what was this hole dissertation about so far right denying yourself not following your own will but following God's will and doing God's will that's what he's saying exactly right here take up your cross and follow me follow God do God's will follow me deny yourself don't follow your own will don't follow your own agenda your own purpose follow God they kept you cross and follow me he says are we willing to lay down our own selfish desires are we willing to lay down our own will Luke says take up your cross daily every single day take up that cross are we daily crucifying our flesh all in Galatians five says verse 24 and those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires those who are Christ those who belong to him crucify their flesh and the passions and desires this is hard isn't it those those TV preachers who get up and say Jesus wants you to be rich and happy they're not reading the same Bible that we are right now are they they're not reading the Bible at all most of the time they're not most of them they're not they get up and give a motivational speech and they're not actually looking at the Scriptures saying what is God saying to us those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with his passions and desires and so take up your cross daily and follow me he says what are we doing that are we crucifying our flesh what types of things are we pursuing are you pursuing things that bring you glory are you pursuing things that exalt you are you pursuing things that get you what you want or you're pursuing things that make you happy or you're pursuing the things of God pursuing the things that God wants but they're suing the things that exalt him the things that make him happy you see how how that works you don't have to be pursuing bad things you don't have to be a murderer be carnally minded you don't have to be an adulterer to be carnally minded you don't have to be a thief to be carnally minded you just have to be thinking of yourself that's what makes a carnal mind is when you're thinking of the things of men not the things of God are we following Yeshua every moment of the day or just when it's convenient for us and we say like Paul in Galatians - I have been crucified with Christ it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me this is this is phenomenal how many of us can stand up and say that I don't live anymore it's Christ that lives in me I can't say that i I I would be terrified to say that you guys look at me you see Jesus you see Yeshua man no you don't you see me you see a screw-up I was trying really hard to tread water and keep my head above I struggle I struggle with crucify my flesh when I look at the words of Paul that is challenging to me it's so easy for us to do our own will I said it doesn't have to be evil it doesn't have to be horrible you know it did Adolf Hitler yes he was a horrible evil sinner yes he was walking in the flesh but you know what you don't have to be like Hitler to be walking in the flesh you have to be pursuing your own desires and not gods so your desires maybe good things but if it's not God's will than your walking in the flesh you're having a carnal mind and this is something we all need to strive to be better at I think don't talks about how we need to abide abide in Christ to remain in him to do well in him so let me wrap it up this way if you sure Yeshua came to you and and said to you one of two things which you know honestly evaluate yourself which of these two statements would better apply when you come up to you and say well done my good and faithful servant or we do you say get behind me Satan you are an offense to me well you know you are not mindful of the things of God with the things of men there the problem I see you know last week I talked about a lot of different denominational issues that I see with different things that are being taught one of the problems I see in a number of churches is easy believe ISM that you just have to you just believe in Jesus and pray a prayer and then you're done and that's it you've got your ticket to heaven and the rest of your life is smooth sailing and that's kind of the way it's presented and that you don't have to worry about anything else that it's all taken care of but the Bible talks about how we need to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling doesn't just say hey just pray a prayer and you're done and so I think that that many times this is being preached and it does an injustice to those who hear it that when the Gospels priest and they say all you have to do is just believe and you've got your ticket to heaven they're not preparing these people or what it means to be a follower of Yeshua a disciple of Yeshua what it means to walk the walking us in the spirit to walk in his ways what it means to walk down the narrow path what it means to deny yourself take up your cross what it means to be sanctified what it means we transformed more and more in His image every day these are the things that the Bible talks about and so we have got to be doing everything we can to stay on that narrow road that leads to life we need to be doing everything we can to follow right there behind you schewe hold on to his coattails hold on to his eats eat hold on to his belt look whatever hang on to him follow as closely behind him as you can and walk down that narrow path with him you his will do the will of the Father not your own bow your heads with me
