[Music] ah yes this is a nice date isn't it [Music] what's the matter babe i don't know master albert you've changed i'm breaking up with you but why i'm sorry it's not you it's me are you in love with another game engine no it's not about that it's just then who's that nothing show me your phone what no for the past few weeks now i have been working on our new game polaris when i started the project the biggest question was am i going to use game maker or am i going to use godot for this game at that time there was a huge pressure to release the alpha demo as soon as possible so i went with game maker because i was more familiar with it and great success people loved the alpha but after the release i just couldn't keep lying to myself anymore in my heart i knew that i wanted to use godot and so i started transferring my game to godot and here they are side by side now that i have essentially made the same game in two different engines i feel like i am now qualified to compare them at least to the extent of my experience with them here's the summary of today's topic i'll explain them one by one to your small brain let's start with game maker in my opinion game maker is easier to learn than godot when i was making my first game soul chase i tried remaking it in godot just like i did with polaris this was four years ago and i only had a few months of experience with game development coming from game maker to godot as a complete beginner at that time i found godot's elaborate note system each node with their own properties and quirks overwhelming as opposed to game maker you got sprites you got objects you got sounds and boom you have a game i also think game maker language is a bit easier to learn than gd script but i think the feature that we will discuss next is the main reason why i think game maker is easier than godot and that is all instances are readily accessible to put it simply once you put an instance of an object to a room in game maker you can basically do anything with that object from any other object in the room as opposed to godot where you have to set up and connect signals and you have to plan note parenting carefully this was the main reason why i came back to game maker back in 2017 my small brain cannot comprehend how two different objects should communicate in godot next up easy reporting to other platforms game maker wins when it comes to porting to other platforms godot doesn't officially support this but you can hire third party services to do it for you there's a video of heartbeast explaining this in more detail link in description k maker also has a built-in sprite editor which comes in handy when you're prototyping i used to be a big fan of this until they broke it into 2.3 update now whenever you try to do things with layers this happens that's when i bought a sprite and i never looked back to gamemaker's inferior sprite editor but it still comes in handy for quick edits now let's move to godot the first one is the most obvious and a self-explanatory the dough has 3d so if you're looking to make 3d games go with godot next is godot's intuitive note system everything in godot is node based the room you're playing is a node your player is a node the sprite of your player is a node even your mom is a node you basically build a game by putting these nodes together while the learning curve is not as gentle as in game maker since you have to learn what notes to use and what properties they have once you get used to it you're in for a world of wonders and features you didn't even know you needed in your life one powerful example of this is components for example i made the speaker component now that i have this i can just put this node in any object and now they can speak you can put it in signs you can put it in people you can even put it in your mom next one is the user interface or ui in game maker you have to code your own ui which is not very fun to do since you can see what it looks like while you're coding it and you can only see it when you run it in godot ui features are built in and very powerful it works right off the bat again this is explained in more detail by heartbeast i recommend you watch that video so if you're looking to make a ui heavy game like jrpgs good always the way to go the next feature is kudos powerful inspector it displays the properties of each node in this window and you can edit them however you like the closest thing that gamemaker has to this is the variables window whose name doesn't even make sense because you already have variables inside the object script and then you also have the variables in this variables window but it doesn't even come close to kudos inspector you can also export your own variables and even resources such as dialogues to the inspector [Music] next up godot is super lightweight the download size is 27 mb it only has one file how does that even work where's the rest of it this mrs vcz's pcc tv zzzz did a video on this the advantages of godot over unity and in this case over game maker because of its lightweight nature so if you have a low spec pc which i know you do because you're poor go with godot which brings us to our last item godot is 100 free it's also open source and off the record i think the godot community is much cooler than the game maker community so there we go gamemaker versus godot based on my own experience i know i'm a bit more biased towards godot here but like all respectable game developers say it's not about the engine you should go with whatever is best for you i know now that godot is the engine that i like the most but that was not the case 4 years ago i didn't have any background in programming so there was no way i was going to learn godot as fast as i learned gamemaker so i love both of these engines and i still use both of them until now depending on my project's needs i'm not saying godot is better than gamemaker but it is if you want to follow polaris join the polaris discord server or if you are a game developer or want to play in our minecraft smp join the haramber server links in description thanks for watching again thanks for a thousand subs also what do you think of my english voice reveal should i just go back to text to speech voice did you even understand anything i said in this video you
