I think these two picks are perfect.
The previous "mentions" list was also pretty good. My other "mentions" games are Dear Esther (the walking simulator genre, and games as art representative) and Telltale's The Walking Dead S1 (telltale style genre, and games for stories representative) and Skyrim (bringing RPG into mainstream gaming, pushed for progression system and open world dominance, mod madeness (good and bad) and ungodly long sustained life).

Something that bothers me near the end here... "Will VR ever find it's place?" Mat, as someone whose been in VR for almost a year now, I can definitely say, it's catching it's stride and sort of.. found a place already, but not in a way that many think or would be expecting it.
I honestly want a Game Theory done on this, and wish I could suggest it, there's lots to know about here, and lots to talk about, and it's perfect for him to get into.
You forgot GTA 5 it the most profitable entertainment product ever made. witch mean Out of everything made in the entrancement industry in 2010's nothing made as much money as GTA 5. You mention skyrim as nod toward the open world genera, however I think GTA 5 Is a better marker of how big that Genera was but also how much money gaming was making. Now is there a reason for this yes take two sold it twice( we jump a console generation). But if you ever need a reminder of just how much money games make, GTA 5 and game about making money any way possible, made the most money possible.
I’m not saying which one I think will win, but Minecraft outsold Tetris, so....
