G1000 Cessna Skylane Flights For Fishing & BBQ! (Chasin’ Tailwinds S1EP5)

i'm warm you're warmed up let's give this a go on this episode we were chasing tailwinds for an epic birthday trip [Music] oh yeah [Music] all right well let's sit back and relax i know you brought some snacks [Music] we're chasing tailwinds for an epic birthday weekend i planned a very cool trip for kevin's 30th birthday record scratch everyone's like huh yep kevin is only 30. i know he looks 60 you act 60 you go to bed like a 60 year old you have the bladder of a 60 year old but you're only 30. i definitely don't act like i'm 60. yes you do come on you act like an old man we're about to head off on kevin's 30th birthday trip we have towels and sunscreen bathing suits i'm wearing my lucky fishing shirt wonder where we're going so this birthday trip had a couple of different components to it but our very first stop was heading from atlanta georgia down to pompano beach florida which is way in south florida like just north of miami and it's known for awesome beaches good seafood and good boating and fishing so that's why i wanted to take you oh there wanted that i need that oil to get nice and warm before we pour the coals on it gonna be a downwind departure 90 i could pull up at 90. all righty you ready i am so ready babe get me down clear order runway 3-1 full power and the green air speed's alive looking for 59 knots there we are a gentle tug off the runway picking up some air speed all right are you doing radios today are you getting the prince treatment for your birthday we can do radios for now we'll see how my voice is look at us with both of our fishing shirts on we're gonna talk now we're ready [Laughter] [Applause] literally nothing else i would rather do so we flew almost 600 miles down to pompano beach that's about three hours and 45 minutes in the cessna 182 skylane we flew you guys have got to be getting familiar with this plane that it's perfect for exactly this oh we just took off from atlanta georgia and we are headed down to south florida pompano beach it's about a three and a half hour flight but we brought some lunch and we got the radio on here so i think it'll be a smooth cruise today it's super nice out too that's nice favorite things about flying this far snacking some more snacking okay we need to we need to be aware of our useful load kevin i'm just gonna take some of the weight and then put it in my body [Music] so [Music] we just crossed into florida and we had a very light breakfast so i think it's snack time snack snack snacks i know i can convince you for snack time anytime yes our snacks today are sent to us carbon tv and some of you guys might be watching on carbon tv right now if you don't know what you should fight our 707 flathead three three zero courtesy of carbon tv and the one and only jules mcqueen so jerky at 6 000 feet thank you jules cheers [Applause] me some fish i was hoping you would take a nap and you know be quiet for a little while once we get into florida and cross the border it's like a trip down memory lane and since the weather was so nice out we were able to see all of these landmarks that mean a lot to us the first one that we flew over was daytona beach florida [Music] which is where i originally learned how to fly that's where i got my pilot license [Music] and that's where we met we met in college there at embry riddle special place always loved going over that place because that got me you that's when you decided that you wanted to be smart you remember that kevin was on the baseball team and he didn't care so much about school and i made you smart you think you made me smart well we're still working on it we're still together so i guess something worked kevin do you know what we're about to fly over i do it's a special airport to us isn't it we're about to fly over titusville airport is where we got married so the next airport that uh provided a little bit of a memory was titusville a little bit of a memory a lot of bit of a memory that's where mindy and i got married it is and when we pass i shot you off a quick question if you remembered our wedding date and i was shooketh if i may say that you were very quick to respond all right really quick what is our wedding date november 25th 2017. wow genius i win our wedding was epic it started with us taxing in on 172 to all of our friends and family and in the reception was a blue angel was a bunch of war birds there's a p-51 there there were days where we thought we wouldn't make it out but we stuck it out [Music] you can't ask for anything cooler [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] yes there's a museum right there on the airport that we got married at it was beautiful one hangar we had the ceremony the other one we had our reception we came in on the airplane and it was just the coolest thing because both of our families don't have an aviation background at all so during our cocktail hour there were volunteers there giving tours in the museum and everyone was learning a lot about our brand new careers and something that was so special to us so really cool to mix aviation in with our new marriage there one two three three additional traffic ten o'clock one mile westbound against two thousand seven hundred all right we're coming up on lake okeechobee which is three three i believe the largest lake in florida after we passed titusville we got vectored over lake okeechobee which is the biggest lake in florida and is known for having super huge bass fishing and super huge alligators yes so i don't like to spend too much time flying over that lake so i was happy when we got vectored in to land at pompano beach florida which hey that's another special place for me that's where i earned my flight instructor licenses i spent some time down there doing flight training so it was like coming back to a familiar place [Music] after we landed in pompano we had a short uber ride to our epic airbnb welcome to our airbnb birthday weekend kitchen area so excited our dining room oh yeah yeah my dad and brother are on the way right now with their boat to put it right here [Music] it's the best thing to do when you have friends and family coming in town is just to get a big house and everyone shares it and that's the most fun and the coolest part is we had breakfast in atlanta and by lunchtime we were eating on the water and pompano [Music] [Music] so mindy set up this epic birthday bash for me i like how many times we've said epic this one just gonna throw it out this one deserves it so mindy's brother and dad trailered down their offshore boat so we know that that means some fishing and right about this time of year there starts to get some mahi that starts creeping in so we went out tested our luck and you know what we caught some day two out in the water in pompano and looking for mahi but i think we'd be happy with anything let's hope for the best [Music] whoa we catching mahi we brought home dinner which i'll say is super impressive because if you have a boat you know this if you're out in unfamiliar water places that you've never fished before if you even catch one fish that is a huge success yeah when we started reeling in mahi we were really excited about that do the fish dance basically um come on fishy fishy fishy come on kevin give us another one we're doing it here fishy fishy [Music] [Applause] so we spent the next couple days just uh messing around on the boat with all of our family like i said we had our little nieces there i had my sister-in-law my mother-in-law father-in-law brother-in-law it was a party it's a big one bobby he's a giant it's a big catfish bobby look at him you see him oh look at that oh good job oh good job you gotta bring him on the boat doc let's back up a little bit let's back up we'll get him in we'll make uncle kevin get him oh my goodness watch out should i try and move forward be careful good job shy the trip wasn't over yet if i know you i know you best and the trip has to include some sort of food right we departed pompano beach florida back in the cessna 182 but instead of going straight home i wanted to stop on the coast of georgia st simon's island and a lot of pilots ears probably just perked up because this is a very common fly to go get lunch sort of place because there is an i'm gonna say it again it's drinking game every time we say epic you need to drink let's just uh keep that going there's an epic barbecue place called southern soul barbecue and it's just a few blocks off of the airport pilots like to fly into the airport and just walk over to get this really really great barbecue okay well your birthday extravaganza is not over oh it's not over is it oh we flew down to pompano for a few days to see the family hang out on the boat hang out by the beach in the pool and uh now on the way home we are stopping somewhere that i haven't gotten to take you to i haven't had the chance to take you it's uh very popular in the pilot world to go to ssi which is st simon's island go get barbecue at a place called southern seoul it's a pilot favorite so it's time for you to experience it everybody knows how much i like to eat information oh you taking me a little pit stop to give me some barbecue it's just the caps off a perfect birthday week so mindy wants me to tell you that this was a short flight at the same time it was a short time the whole time i'm thinking what am i going to eat i can't wait to crush some barbecue it was an hour and a half flight and a half too long i just wanted to get there i got you there at prime time lunch time and i fed you breakfast oh [Applause] is this what 30 is i know all of a sudden you turn 30 you're freaking old ah i'm just trying to throw out your back every time now that hurts so much oh you're getting old is quite annoying i might need to trade you in we landed at st simons finally yes it's a very common place for pilots to come fly to and this barbecue place called southern seoul is just a few blocks away from the airport so people like to fly in and just walk to the restaurant it's just a few blocks and this barbecue is freaking good i mean you could tell just by the line there was 15 20 people there i don't even know what time of day it was it was lunchtime for the last time it was lunchtime i didn't care all i had was that mac and cheese and brisket on my mind lunch time [Music] what are you feeling i am there's two outdoor patio spaces and then a really small indoor space there's this whole board of all the food you can order we both got the brisket and mac and cheese homemade you can't say homemade fries i got okra i did get the fries didn't anyways point being is we really needed to redo the weight and balance before we took back off yeah but you made me walk back to the plane remember it was a needed walk all right we're walking back to the airport from the infamous southern soul what do you grade it uh nine out of ten this time that's a pretty high
