hi guys how you doing this afternoon there's one of the big football matches of the season on television it starts at 3 p.m and finishes at about 4 45 so i don't want to be disturbed between those times because i'll be watching the match thank you very much now a little while ago i made a video about how to use will be going to the present continuous for future and the present simple for future if you haven't watched that video yet i suggest that you do there's a link to it up here in the corner of your screen and when you have watched it come back here and watch this video where i talk about the future continuous a verb tense that we use quite a lot in the english language and if you are preparing for the cambridge b2 first certificate you absolutely need it and if you are actually preparing for this exam or in fact any other exam stay until the end because there's an extra little something for you right let's get started let's start with how you form the future continuous one of the beautiful things about english verb tenses is that there is often only one form of the verb for every person i you he she it we you and they and the future continuous is one of those verb tenses now in the positive or affirmative form of the verb it is made with will be followed by the ing form of the verb for example what i said at the beginning of this video i will be watching the match and it's the same for every person so you will be watching the match he will be watching the match she will be watching the match it will be watching the match yeah okay that's a bit of a strange example but it's just to show you the form and in the plural we have we will be watching the match you will be watching the match and finally they will be watching the match in the negative we use the negative form of will so will not or the contracted form won't and again it's the same for every person i you he she it we you and they won't be watching the match easy isn't it and to formulate a closed question where the answer is either yes or no we have will plus subject plus b plus the ing form of the verb and again it's the same for every person for example will you be watching the match and the answer is either yes i will or no i won't and here you might also hear people say yes i will be or no i won't be and that's absolutely fine to ask an open question where we want more than a yes no answer we simply put the question word at the beginning of the question so you get what will you be watching great now that we know how to make the future continuous when do we use it well to be honest you already know the most common usage of this verb tense because you know how to use the present continuous the present continuous is used to talk about an action that is happening now that is in progress at the moment or around this moment and the future continuous is exactly the same thing but at a time in the future a future time that we must specify either in our sentence or which is clear from the context of the conversation let's have a look at what i said in the introduction again it starts at 3 p.m and finishes at about 4 45 so i don't want to be disturbed between those times because i'll be watching the match okay so between 3 p.m and 4 45 during that time i will be watching the match i'm telling you what activity what action i will be doing now we don't have to specify the beginning and the end of the action imagine this situation i'll phone you when i get home at four o'clock no don't find me then i'll be watching the match so as you see the future continuous is used to say that you will be in the middle of doing something at a specific time in the future compare these sentences at 10 a.m yesterday i was working right now i am working and at 10 am tomorrow i will be working the continuous form in these examples is used to talk about an action in progress at a particular moment in the past in the present and in the future and what about these two sentences what's the difference in the meaning between them take a moment to look at them think about it and then we'll see together okay i'm sure you got it the first sentence i'm watching the match at three o'clock here i've used the present continuous for future to indicate the start of the action that i will start to watch the match at that time and in the second sentence i'll be watching the match at four o'clock i've used the future continuous to indicate that i'll be in the middle of watching the match at that time that is the most common use of the future continuous but we also use it for a few other things and we're going to see those now we can use the future continuous to talk about people's plans in a similar way to how we use the present continuous for future if you see bob can you ask him to call me no problems i'm seeing him later no problems i'll be seeing him later in this context there is no real difference between the two forms however when you use it in the interrogative form so in other words you are asking a question then the future continuous takes on a much more tentative aspect it makes your question much more polite and it's used especially if you want something or if you want the person that you are talking to to do something for you but you don't really want to disturb them too much will you be going past the news agents when you go out probably why do you mind getting me a newspaper yes all right no problems we also use the future continuous to talk about an action in progress that is interrupted by a shorter action in the future obviously imagine you are meeting your friends at the train station and you say to them when you arrive i'll be waiting for you by the ticket office here the short action of arriving interrupts the longer action of waiting by the ticket office we use the future continuous for the longer action that will be in progress and the present simple for the shorter action which interrupts it and the last thing that we use the future continuous for is to make predictions about things which are likely to be happening now now we don't know for sure if they are happening but we are predicting that they are for example don't phone theo now he'll be having lunch we're using the future continuous here to make a prediction about what theo is likely to be doing at this particular moment great now it's really important to know that the future continuous can only be used with action verbs verbs that describe activities like watching waiting and eating you cannot use it with verbs of state verbs that describe states conditions or emotions so you cannot say you will be loving that film instead you must say you will love that film if you think about it it's exactly the same difference between the present continuous and the present simple and you know how to use those at the beginning of this video i said that you need this verb tense if you are preparing the cambridge b2 first certificate exam or really any exam in the speaking part of the exam they will often ask you about your future plans and programs so if they ask you something like what are you doing this weekend it's very tempting and easy to answer with something like i'm going to the cinema with my friends on saturday now that sentence is grammatically perfect but unfortunately it's the kind of language that a lower level of student will use so you want to make your answer better and use more complex grammar and here you can simply change the sentence and say i'll be going to the cinema with my friends on saturday night to see the new james bond film you see it's just a simple change but one which will help you to get higher marks so start thinking about how you can take your simple answers and make them just that little bit better that little bit sexier for the examiners i hope you have found this lesson about the future continuous useful hit the like button if you did and while you're here please take the time to watch one of my other videos i really need the views thanks very much and also subscribe to my channel if you haven't done so already there's a button just below me here thank you so much for watching take it easy and i'll see you in the next video until then bye for now
