Jill Biden are at their first NASCAR race this weekend welcome ladies nice to have you here mrs. Obama I want to start with you tell us about the joining forces initiative that brought you here to homestead-miami Speedway today well Jill and I because of our respect and love of our troops and their families we're trying to rally the country to show support for these families who are serving right alongside of the men and women in uniform we want to make sure that these families know that America has their back so we've been working with the business community with a number of sports leagues with individuals everyone stepping up in ways big and small and we're asking America to find ways to continue to show appreciation so NASCAR has done a phenomenal job and we're just grateful to them for all the work that they've done not just today but every day so we're very excited to be here very good dr. Biden I know your stepson Beau was deployed a few years back to Iraq you kind of understand what these families are going through what message do you typically bring to them well I our son Beau was deployed for a year and you know I just want all Americans to know what it's like for a family of a deployed service member and so I just ask all families to commit to an act of kindness for a service members family an act of kindness how else does the average person get involved typically what you can do anything as we say go to your strengths I mean I I know when my son was deployed and we had a major snowstorm that somebody in the neighborhood went and plowed their driveway so it's just something little something small to say okay we appreciate you and what you're doing so mrs. Obama this is your first NASCAR race do you like the sound of loud engines and you like to smell the burning rubber what are you anticipating about NASCAR today it's awesome what we just Karl just showed us his car I mean amazing piece of technology it's just fascinating to learn all the ins and outs of the race you know how he gets water what the seat feels like what is drafting all about there's a huge science behind the race so I'm excited I got a little tutorial so now we're gonna see whether we actually understand it but this is exciting I mean it's not just the race but it's families together I mean the fact that all the NASCAR drivers have their families here kids are all over the place I mean that's another reason why NASCAR is such a good spokesperson for military families because they're appreciating families and the work that they do these are drivers are putting themselves out every race so they understand that their risks that go along with the work that they do and their families are right there behind them so we're it you know we're pretty fired up about seeing what this is gonna look so great that NASCAR invited thousands of military families to come here today this to this big race so this is really what joining forces is all about and then communities just coming out to support our military families and then to support NASCAR so you both are aware that this is a very close championship today is the last race Tony Stewart will win or Carl Edwards will win mrs. yeah probably gonna be a few laps under the caution for this little rain shower to just evaporate on the warm floor today now that it stopped raining well he's unlucky that he had it to happen but fortunate that the rain showers came where they have time to work on this maybe get it repaired and be as good as new so lady 14-team providing some early intrigue in the championship they're going to show the drivers to to go see what their reaction is we'll take a quick break in the Ford 400 come back from the restart [Music] homestead-miami Speedway the 4,400 wrapping up the first caution which came out for a brief rain shower that peppered the racetrack the leaders have all kidded Carl Edwards has the lead as we get set for the restart Tony Stewart has pitted twice for repairs to the nose grill of that car he has rejoined the field Stewart back in 40th place as we get set to go back at it yeah he was he would have restarted eight that missed out that just made fix the attack battle for random one two time to make up ground that's Ryan Newman three deep on the bottom turn one and is that he wanted together the lead but Martin Truex came clawed back by take second spot [Applause] 99 Truex 56 for the lead Earnhardt jr. a little wide he's gonna get challenged there forty-two part one Pablo Montoya speeding on pit road had to go to the back of the field [Music] smoking front ends when we have a pet he's got a good father in Bob Jeffrey Bob does a good job of being able to keep personal personal endorsement there so it's Edwards and Truex one and two five time Jim Johnson [Music] Johnson's never wanted this racetrack you'd like to change that here today the question asked him by Dave burns when we talk to on NASCAR countdown about the fact that he's come here the last several years we had the opportunity to race for the win I've got the opportunity today Jeff Gordon 24k she came for 7th and 8th talk to Jeff Gordon's crew chief Alan Gustafson this morning was a potential contender and another guy that a lot of people talked about being a potential contender in trying to get second place for Martin Truex there is that 88 we'd like Taylor dregg's gonna give it up now you see jr. them to what you fight down there is the track is really flat you had extremely wonderful indeed it is CJ in fact Dale jr. said my car's his passion race tram all weaken as it was in qualifying trim and we qualified really well the only issue he can run the bottom he can run the middle but he won't for the top [Music] Jr settled in third behind him for fourth now Jimmie Johnson 48 just mentioned while Jeff Gordon's in the picture is behind these guys 24 Jordan was one of three guys who were in the top ten the pit stop where we saw host everybody that took four tires on the pit stop and gave up some track position but are trying to make it up on the edge refresher over here you get about 20 to 25 left on these tires Gordon restarted 11th you see him there running in fifth Greg Biffle or the other guys and Keselowski they're 16 four tires on the restart the tip already he's always looking at the right right even this arleigh he's thinking about positioning themselves for the end of the race maybe the fight to confirm coming for doctor spot from Ryan Newman 39 yeah that's just a really difficult task and we'll see this all day at the end of the evening if I take that hot away from you trying to pass in the middle or the bottom is extremely difficult it really is fascinating after they rebuilt this track for the 2003 races this track was pancake flat and at first it was a a smaller replica of India four-cornered race track then they redesigned it to be a flat oval track then they added the progressive banking and it's a fascinating place to watch a race now and that's how you make a pass that's an experienced driver right there jib board all over Newman [Music] beating down the straightaway and he their way down to the Papi's leg right out of there next to Ryan what Carl Edwards Lisa Tony Stewart member restarted in 40th position it's up to 25th and big and Hardy he's pardoned his way through this but his skis had to work hard make it all joining us scored that car somewhere in the opening run of the race they made two pit stops under the caution the way back 240th making affairs be worried about in this case looks like a hard time point but I would be worried about maybe some internal damage right here and you see how they've got Oh it's a balanced beautiful start to race [Music] we come back to mr. jr. back on pit road for tires and fuel car really really good engineer with a son named Jimmy set Twitter grip the first few laps then it goes loose wench and track bar adjustment for the second time today four tires fits kasey kahne upper right hand side of your screen loose audience four tires air pressure and a chassis adjustment Jamie Carl Edwards in the 99 site in the middle last time and they made a track bar adjustment Tony Stewart they're going to put a little more a little more tape on the grill trying to make sure it gets in the right position they made a four-tire change for Tony Stewart you see taking a little extra time to make sure they get that grill just right in fact a little front fender damage where Tony had made some contact earlier in the race Allen nice thanks so Stewart made up ground after starting at the back of the pack on the last restart give it all that ground back up again for repairs here's what brought out the caution trouble in turn four it's Dave caution never had a penalty last time ride for the lead Kevin Harvick Brad Keselowski shuffling Montoya back it's Kozlowski to the boy that pit stop Brian Vickers have been there making that Highland work for him trying to go forward here comes Gordon in the inside that's a tight squeeze there can you make it stick off but rotary Scott Montoya really struggling fall off and lose a lot of speed in the opening 10 laps that you learn tires are going to be very important three starts started saying this track had lost a lot of crib the cars are sliding around and when it does that it here it didn't have mud spins I can't imagine what it's like now just going to say we put a go to pavement on you and leave you in the South Florida Sun when you lose a little grip to Tony Stewart trying to make up some ground for the restart house up the 27th yeah that was close call backbone slipped up into the wall right in front of Tony Edwards and Harvick that's for second spot sorry Eddie like going on what's here catch up on a couple things some guys make two-tire stops under that caution brad keselowski got whites-only to get some track position it does have those four tires but you can see even with that how difficult it is [Music] you need the whole track and if you're trying to pass a car obviously that makes it [Music] [Applause] so you can go all the way back up to the wall but if you're racing somebody you don't have them you have to be extremely careful being down there too much because you are having to put more wheel use your tires a little bit more and so therefore at the end of a run you may fall off quite a bit [Music] [Applause] that there over 50 miles in a straight Miami Speedway in South Florida the championship with some grilled damage early that set him from up by the top 10 all the way to the back of a pack now twice Stewart's car seems to be behaving just fine though he's picking his way back and we have right there I think it's important that we point out that as long as nobody can get to the burn and win this race then it doesn't matter they would tie in points but Tony has the tiebreaker by the most wins Edwards gets through the second pump pump on the right side of the screen there from Kevin Harvick and as Harvick backs off to get his entry in the turn here comes Jeff Gordon the trying for every game well he's using all the racetrack to make these passes Marcus Ambrose four cars in the last lap he passed you know I think one thing Tony Stewart and not that Carl Edwards doesn't either commands a lot of respect down here because the seen two engines go down in the Ford camp there Jack are you concerned at all about this 99 problem the compactor running is something we got experience with so they're probably just some kind of a component quality problem I've texted to find out what's going on if I don't get an answer pretty quick on the down the garage and take a look at it myself okay in the meantime he's staying right here led the most laps so far in this race and continues to lead the Ford 400 [Music] 100 down 167 to go in this championship race at homestead-miami Speedway let's take an inside look at what's happening production [Music] the 99 car car Edwardson his teammates the six car in the nine car have already blown up inch they got engine problems tell you what in my opinion there's a couple of ways to fix that or at least baby this motor a little bit to make sure this 99 doesn't have a problem he needs to really be careful are three skirts we're talking about the rebel burger and he can back up the quarter a little bit not bomb the car down in the corner so deep he's already mentioned he's got a right front tire that a cut on it they might have pushed the limit there it work on there and watch the 48 make a second button Skelton pitched up now guys put your oil pressure temperature fine five time never want to distract movie not having much luck today we'll go back upstairs to FATA : j me was v at the time he slowed he just made a couple of kind of bold passes in the last 10 laps of this race and it's never a good sign senpai given seven Silver's my team almost like we heard some of those grouse eggs engines hi blue schecky you see pressing down on the plug wires to make sure they're all still attached yeah that's what you're really hoping is something that simple well Jimmie Johnson's race here at homestead-miami Speedway the last five years has ended with him hoisting the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship trophy we already knew that's not how this one was going to end he was hoping to at least grab the race win trophy there's the leave first a second Carl Edwards out in front of Jeff Gordon by one point zero two seconds NASCAR officials keep an eye on a shower or end of this racetrack not a heavy one but it's out there across the lens see the weather see it coming in that position these tires have no guru so if they are slick and only takes a little bit of moisture this place is slick enough already check it out got a rainbow but see on the left side of the screen here that's literally you could see like the curtain of rain coming down thank you looks like it's just gonna be luck I don't think it's gonna get the track that's Florida lift lived in the Sunshine State for ten years you can literally watch it porn on your neighbor's house and be sitting in here in your front drum up porch on it in a chair and be bone dry and getting something yes sir so just past a hundred and fifty miles caution for the fourth time second caution for rain [Music] rain beginning to wash the speedway to Jack Roush has been busy is back in the garage area this little last one he walked all the way from the head of pit road all the way back to the sixth garage where he talked with members of his engine department about what happened and the crew chief frankly a drew Blickensderfer about what happened on the sixth car I asked Jack did you get any information that would be definitive and help you with the 99 car this afternoon he said we believe it was a bearing issue that is a random issue it's something they know what earlier this year really had nothing to point to so in his mind they don't see the same thing possibly happening to this car they've only lost two engines in races so far this year all of the project stars so certainly something to make the day a little more nerve-wracking for Jack Roush Baba sporting that entire team as they have led most of this race so far to this point hey Scott bring in the field down pit road the shower literally moving across the speedway from one end to the other and the track surface has been wet and so the field will be brought down the pit road cars shut down and car covers placed on them and already the jet driers have been set out onto the Speedway that's how quickly we expect the shower to pass and the racetrack to take take up some of that Florida sunshine and try back out the best thing is it is it's traveling exactly across the track it's probably no bigger than the track itself [Music] me Johnson sitting on pit road Dave yep but we are witness to that passing over the by the way they have changed ignition boxes both of them on that 48 car Jimmy sang it did not fix the problem he required it and then Chad said well let's change carburetors let's change spark plug wires let's just change stuff they're going through the entire checklist trying to find out why the 48 engine is missing right now not a speculation about the future chat canals with this 48 races past the end of this season team saying today there was no question in their mind and in fact Jimmie Johnson talking earlier the weekend at his press conference here at the racetrack that Chad and he had already been in meetings about next season how to get better at what their deficiencies were this year and go about trying to get back to championship caliber racing again that took away some real hope says some others had that they might be splitting up now one welcome news when they found out Chad was coming back because they are definitely a powerful hurry right there with the two leaders Jack and Houston Butch Cassidy and Sundance give me some other some other good pairings here that we might throw as a Chad Knaus and Jimmie Johnson I don't know spider-man and Superman come on help me out here they was in the sport how about Jeff Gordon and Ray Evernham there you go talk myself into a corner you saw a NASCAR non-stop race leader championship leader Carl Edwards coming back from the infield and climbing aboard his number 99 Ford in the number one position as we get set to resume racing from an hour-plus rain delay Tony Stewart sitting in fifth position having made quite the recovery from some early race troubles here in the season-ending Ford 400 some special dignitaries race underway early trouble for Kurt Busch broken transmission right off the start that's not good 22 cars spent 47 laps at the garage he's back up the track Tony Stewart found some early trouble also yeah could fit some of those parts that came out of that transmission of the 22 went into the grill you can see the damage that it did they had to replace all of this Tony went all the way back to 40th place has recovered the fifth Carl Edwards meantime has had no such troubles started on pole has led 87 of a hundred and nine laps is the race leader presently I don't think he's been abhi farther back than fourth in this race under green while Carl was out front Tony was on the charge in passing cars all day long with that damage on the grill had to come back in a couple of times to fix it he's had no trouble driving that car up into the top five so far little concern of the board camp when both David Ragan and Marcos Ambrose had engine problems that went to the garage we heard from Doug Yates the man who pets the engine program Rogers for routes engines said that that was a different engine package in the six car that Edwards has on the hood of his 99 that basically the major stories the race leading up to the vein that stopped this race at lap number 109 see the clouds scattered about the area but the track just about finished being dried lights are on and we're set to go racing once again with still the second half of this Ford 400 yet to go a lot of racing left to do love race again this is a long time we've got 25 laps before we get to the halfway point here but this is by no means over and you hurt how confident Tony Stewart being and thinking that he's got itself right back in the middle of this he's very confident but what they're gonna face when they do go green is a track that's completely different we actually had some Sun on the track even though we did see the ring and now we've got it's totally dark we've just had the track drivers out there blowing the track so this track is gonna be quite different for these teams there may be some things that have to make some adjustments for all the rubber that was laid down by the cars under racing conditions in the first couple of hundred miles washed away it didn't rain for long but it rained plenty enough a lot of big challenges for teams and what about mechanically for the car itself running in the heat of the day up to racing temperatures now sitting there cooling off essentially while they dry the track now it's going to get heated back up again it is a concern I mean anytime you run these engines through heat cycles there's you know potential issues like we've heard a lot of guys say there's nothing to do about it they just gotta quit they're cranking back up and and go racing but you always worry about these rain delays and going and starting the engines back in it especially when you see some engine problems that we've seen at least on the forwards and even on the Chevy's we saw a little problem with Jimmie Johnson's engine that got to have Tony's bunch a little bit on it yeah and I would have to bring back up a point that Rusty Wallace made earlier on about as we get into night now the track is going to be a little bit faster it's still very slick out there but they're going to turn some more rpm so as a driver you're gonna have to monitor that and that's something that you can do you know when you get to that rpm that you won't just hold it right there and ease out of the gas and maybe not attack the corner quite as hard until you get to the end of hide so that's the mechanical part of the rain delay let's talk about the people part you get in there you're Carl Edwards you're Tony Stewart Tony we've seen him do nothing but be Charlie go lucky so far in this race what me worried but Carl has been the leader he's been out in front he's been leading laps he's had some things to worry about with the engines on the other cars a right front tire problem reported by his team earlier how's this rain delay affected the guy on the left yeah never good really I'm Carl had a perfect date going basically out front no challengers really - while you know he was leading the race but you don't want to stop because that gives you time to think about those things that she did have but it also gave you time to discuss and come up with a game plan word going down from race control start those engines we're gonna put the cars back on the racetrack game we're gonna get this thing back going again very shortly [Music] pretty sight all lit up for night racing this Homestead Miami Speedway looking down from our aerial coverage provided by Goodyear join the rain delay has ended the rates wash off the rubber on the track and the sun's gone down track and this is going to change a lot is gonna do it for everybody we obviously got a fast race car don't go back to the front twice so play slow with the adjustments here and see how the track comes to us thanks Terry Jamie and Bob Osborne here ready to go as well what's the plan now Bob you guys are kind of right in that window you're going to need to pit soon yeah we got plenty laps on the tires so sounds like they're gonna run us around the track for a few laps to get pit road cleaned up and then the pit road will come down to it any adjustments plan baby baby they've been doing wedge adjustments always big Alan I would not want to be in a poker game with either one of those guys Darian or Bob that's for sure you bet they'll be adjusting to the changing track conditions we just talked about [Music] just under an hour and 15 minutes was the red flag period but the red has been withdrawn the yellow is out at the pace car leading the field of cars back on to the race track to resume this Ford 400 now that the red is withdrawn to be Johnson's team can resume working on the 48 car remember the hood up on that car just as the rain began with some engine troubles that we heard from Chad Knaus a minute ago they'll throw a few more things at it but they suspect it's a pretty serious internal engine problem as we get set to cross halfway in this Ford 400 for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series the race that will decide whose champion Edwards the leader Stewart running fifth two of the four cautions have been for rain Edwards has been a dominant driver on the night out in truck for almost all of the green flag laps of this race and of course Carl Edwards with a lot of success at this racetrack that a NASCAR Sprint Cup champion hoping to turn more success at this racetrack tonight in his first [Music] [Music] ladies down pit road and still maybe win the championship [Music] tony stewart winner of four of the nine races in the championship the doser is for entering the chase but made it barely yet he fixed that once he got into Jason opening 26 races and won the championship there are a couple cars making pit stops before the mid lane is movement they'll have to go to the back of the tack when we go back racing but we've heard in a lot of the interviews we've done under the rain delays of people it's a pretty serious work to do on a couple of these race cars yeah we know Kasey Kahne is talking about thinking you can come in and make a major change where we see Trevor Bayne also in there he was all wet till 11 so it's kind of surprising to see him on here at the port that the road opens because they'll have to go to the rear we're still working on Jimmy Starr kinda back notes this problem it looks pretty grim but they're gonna keep working on it and see if they can figure it out and NASCAR continuing to work on drying the racetrack a little bit before they'll all when the pitlane they've also got some of the jet dryers on the pit lane coming counter to the flow of the race cars on the pit lane to try and try that up before you put race cars I mean think about our race car still doing 45 miles an hour on that bit late you don't want to do it with a trend list tire not a damp surface yeah and they weren't able to do any track grind on pit road with the car sitting there so get him out on the track and let the drivers come up and down pit road didn't have a safe pit road for everybody those jetfire's working backwards off the pit lane and that's why the pit road remains closed at this point pictures ready to go to work and just a moment give us a minute to tell you about the AT&T fastest pit crew of the Year award passes precluded each other by the winner of each race the fastest pit time and you the fans vote Kevin Harvick's team he pastors people to all and thanks to you congratulations Oliver Childress team over there they Harvard running in third position shutting it off and coasting I don't know why they're getting to make a pit stop fill it up fuel unless they feel like they not run out now not knowing exactly how many laps they'll run under under the caution here before they open pit road yeah and at pit road it's going to be close the back of that pace vehicle a bump so well while it's going to be a couple lights last night did being in that race gonna help you to know kind of what adjustments you may need to make to your car here yeah I think it helped me a little bit might be the guys on the best Alma extremely fast all day you said coming here that this is your best racetrack nothing so far to tell anybody different right yeah we've been really fast you know the track is gonna change though it bother the guys know that we can't rehearse all we've done so far we've just got to go on I just have like beers yet keep running hard at you know there's a win this thing okay Carl thanks for talking good luck the rest of the race while Carla's led most of the lap today Tony Stewart has passed some 49 cars after his early trouble to get up the field Tony Stewart Dale Jarrett the SPF comedy yeah better where you been okay well just hanging out watching you want puffing down pit road looks like you're still pretty loose buddy should be we passed about 85 cars already state Sifl it's not exactly exactly how we had a plan but we're back in the top five now and that's something I'm very proud of these guys on this people mope one he's done a great job thirds been doing a great job of leading them and keeping them calm all right Tony thanks for talking good luck the rest to the race buddy before I even said it roads open this time by another chance for the crews to go to work here stops can be with 154 laps to go it is Edward's important Harvick Truex Stewart your top five and the track has cooled off proper washed away they think it's gonna get a little bit freer they're gonna put a have around in the left career for gays and finally we're going to be really good down he's been tight in the middle this track James Jenelle upper right hand portion of your screen Tony Stewart crew chief Darian grubs and I don't want to make major changes is what I'm sure what the track will do so those make a slight air pressure adjustment Jamie Carl Edwards to civilian freer more tighter than another one determined pardon [Music] person that gone [Music] surprising lot of labs they got musty are sitting there their pressure goes but any culture where the right there I don't know what that call was for but probably just want to try to see what their car will do with clean air on the front a couple of quick stories to follow up on there's Jimmy Johnson back on the track Dave yes he is Alan they apparently it was the carburetor during a that when the caution flag came back out they replaced the carburetor they fired it up and Jimmy radioed in it's running right they also very carefully while the guys were under the hood changed four tires and send it back out there so not all us for today and if internally everything is okay I guess that's the other question the carburetor did help but they still may be some internal issues we'll keep an eye on it okay Dave Thanks but as you saw a second ago Jimmie Johnson five it's place gonna take some wave arounds when they can't if they can't if everything's fixed correct it will stayed out to lead a lap now comes down the pit lane in that 16 car it looks like they're doing some work on the front end of the car and that's probably why they stayed out I leave the lap and come in and did this work because they knew they were going to give up all the track position anyway Biffle in a battle for that 13th spot in the points break2 what they told us earlier it gets oil on his windshield had some trouble with visibility driving into turn one and got matter damage something in a hit man hit him yes those are feet hanging out for the back of the 21 car I don't know what they're doing I had a really good car crib had driven the thing up to a lab and decided to make that pit stop and and they did it early so I had to start in the back of the FreeStore and when the caution came out before the rain gelati come back on the lead lap that the Aaron's lucky dog free pass was the first car lap down like some major adjustments on that car as well the Bobby's back on the lead lap [Music] show it about 29 position a lot of these teams working on making where the rear bar is on these cars and it's a rear anti-sway bar that they use instead of putting such his springtime here that's what looks like I mean when they're laying under the car looks like an either run looking they were hooking that bar up or making a change in it no they've got different actually attach the wing so it changed the stiffness of gonna see the 34 and 71 past the pace car their wave arounds to get back on the lead lap for david gilliland then mike bliss and Kevin Harvick now the leader comes up behind the pace bar and chooses the inside lane for the restart just two right-side tires changed by two 29 look at how this is gonna shake out after the pit stop the second brought back yeah we had to know that it's gonna happen here short strategy on the twenty nine doctors almost well just a baby with a Budweiser Chevrolet he's been pretty good tonight inside if we tried now to see how it's going to work out for later if it doesn't pan out for us we'll see how it is at night but I'd rather try it now than do it later and it mess up so we'll see how it works a lot of laps to go okay little experiment early here two tires only for Kevin Harvick puts him up front doc thanks 31 cars on the lead lap we're just shy of halfway in the Ford 400 final race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season to decide the championship not with us earlier Tony Stewart had early troubles went all the way back to 40th now he's all the way up alongside his rival for the title the man who's dominated and led most of the laps of this race Carl Edwards a lot of racing to go transition and track conditions and probably a little transition in intensity here on this restart ooh as we get back to racing here boy Stewart truly got these restarts down pat lately we were ready to go there first time he's been in front of this night Edwards and Harvick side-to-side there to separate them you see Carl Edwards car kicking up sand coming off the corner you see the tracks not completely clean edward settles into third Stewart his second Jeff Gordon now the leader after the shakeout for the restart would desperately like to get in front and get a laugh man get that bonus point we get about manufacturer alliances team alliances couple of Chevrolet's here couple of cars with by Hendrik Stewart getting their chassis and engines from Henry it never hurts the ass but I'm I'm sure that Jeff Gordon is like he talked about in the interview it's been a struggle under stairs gonna need in order to pull over it's on your hanging down pretty good gasps okay hard to be lending got to leave laughs I think it's just a matter that Stewart trying to lower lane Gordon running the higher lane while they run this way at the time oh man he really got out of show get the concrete part of that wall brad keselowski right behind him in that blue two car his night job and checking up and that happened it's tough to miss that Edwards now Carl's got Tony in his sight he knows Charles might behind it how much does the mind start to play here and how difficult is it if you're for example to be patient as you come up on story we said it's a lot of racing left to go but the one thing that Carl Edwards he's going to try to make this bath don't know if he's got enough momentum to get off the truck wow that's tight see how much it means to him right now but he's got to run this time can he do the slide job on him in three I think Gorton saw that tony was bound and determined to get this leave right now and get that bonus point we're going to play the one I'm in a bad position Tony your deliveries got a good view of that too to see right now I'm still not sure they call efrain's is too concerned even right at this moment I mean he certainly knows now but he thought that things might be a lot easier he knows he's got a battle he feels firmly that his part might be the one to beat before this is over I've seen Tony this father in case he gets a leak Bonni have it easily even in the middle of the rice come junior 7th place here try to take it away from Kyle Busch in the 18 now that we've called Kyle's number much today a Toyota Racing Development engine crew chief Dave Rogers and the iteration competition director to make our what telling me gotta give some feedback on how they are the edges season feel from Kyle after what happened last week no reason not to do it this way as he changed over to that earlier there's also things that you have to do to the racecar nd with the way this Toyota engine sits in there you have a different engine people have different packages and weather that you do that's one reason to get it in there this year and they get some experience with it going take Tony's fly I've already his lap down he is really fine you know Carr worked on it came back and Tony at that point gained the confidence of the car we can do this since ever since then the confidence of this team has been [Music] a good race car to me has a admits the fact that Stewart can't lose any ground in the championship the mercy this final race we can't lose anything we we only have the championship to gain so it's it's a pretty cool way to go into the weekend knowing that we can just let it all hang out and go for it we don't have to play cautious he said this earlier in the week in the press conference the kinda didn't expect to be in this position the way to [Music] James is that [Music] the pressure has all the same confidence does carryover spillover into the race name Stewart a little gap on second place Jeff Burton's got a real good word to that 99 car maybe not for long Everage drives through to second the championship duo running in the top 10 at 14 at our bear but as Edwards picks up at the point they're tied remember tiebreaker goes to Tony Stewart most wins [Applause] I wondered could it come down to these two one of them having four wins the race to win the championship today Jamie just Mike exactly and his team just cheerleading telling him right now you are better than bars also Bob Osborne reminding his driver don't overdrive the car remember that pushed the limit on the right front he said take care of your equipment just be calm Karl was very calm on the radio came back and said that's the one thing that Tony Stewart is doing right now he is set in the pace and now Carl Edwards can't sit there and take care of that right front door hey piece of the wall again of that 21 car it was run in 20 seconds time that didn't hit it that hard but looks like he may have a tire going now any debris and the answer is yes as the race reaches its midway point the caution comes out for the fifth time for debris from the 21 car slow in the field with Stewart first and Edwards second they thought that experiment wasn't exactly what they're going to need it's going to give them the opportunity to look for tires alright so let me put my championship crew chief on the spot here because we saw earlier in the race a few guys take just two tires when they hadn't run that many laps on tires yeah still like four tires right here you know this from what we seen on the performance of two tires I just don't like it and it especially if I'm Tony Stewart so they've been able to pass a lot of cars tonight I'd rather do it on four tire seven six laps of racing it does put you at that limit you know Vince on the member where you I still like [Music] never Stewart if he got four tires here not even a lot of people got to he's not gonna lose that much because he is the leader him he won't you know obviously keep the lead but he he won't go too far back thought I just saw the crewman up on the wall there the official is in the pit wants to know if you're gonna do two or four so he doesn't get caught crossing in front of the car when it's leaving I thought I just saw the tire changer piloting to the official and Tony Stewart's kid I know Tony likes for most of the time especially when you got a car that's handling good and this is a slick racetrack I know who said that a lot and discuss it's going in tonight it's not a lot of grip to be had out there so I think four tires is the best call my lip reading skills are pretty off here no we'll see Stewart networks 1 & 2 Gordon Truex hamlet department mordant it first here doc yeah Jeff Gordon said I know a little bit lose a man at 14 is strong and so what he has asked for help him cut him Dave Rogers as two or four Kyle Kyle said more but keep your eyes open will seek our little tight adjustments Jamie Vince a little time to center take three Stuart Darian Grubb said four tires as they were the change Jamie tires again this time around no changes Harlan [Music] see Edwards only lost a couple yeah Toby got trapped to going out of pit road there with some cars pulling out in front of him ant might have had a little trouble on the right side tire change on his stock - coming around the lakefront you can eye on this sometimes that lug gets hung in the socket or saw my baby head yeah sometimes that can happen to the good point yeah watch as he goes down through here I think Denny Hamlin just gonna pull out in front of him yes to check up that's gonna let Kyle Busch go by Carl Edwards shuffled back to fourth from second by other strategy Tony Stewart shuffled all the way back to ninth by some troubles on the right for I said little hiccup a costume or town and the pissed off looks like Everest No presented by American ethanol Stewart out of line quickly on the move in turn one look at that kids without a shake coming off the corner Edwards looks for second I remember this racetrack with an aggressive banking most of the cars will run up top as they get more laps on the tires [Music] that's part of that problem so good in this race a year ago before a flat tire he pack Tourette's has had great success at this racetrack statistically Tony rallying back the big bold move on the opening lap of the restart we've seen it now from him a couple of times let's try to find a way [Music] Johnson had taken the wave-around before the caution away was out there on older tires trying to get one of those flaps back after the engine problem yeah he's got a little damage on that left for a corner like he got something [Music] be ready be ready Wow by him on the racetrack so the wave-around laughs just back the other way for the 48 and it was way down in there I didn't know what happened but I searched spit it out as it turned into three just jump down from will contact me wall with the right rear left but he did get some milk at the end of it long slide without hitting anything yeah it's kind of weird how that car just broke Lucy could have had a slow leak maybe in the right career and Kurt Busch just barely miss Jimmie buddy was spin it [Music] to a baby in I love watching the eyes and those things the night race is when they've got the clear shield the driver does see him look into the write down the track to steer around whatever he might be going to hit most of the front-runners has the the father race track jamie mcmurray in 13th place first taker on pit road under this caution so kevin harvick out in front carl edwards runs third tony a little bit warm but he's hanging on and trying to make the pass warm by two o'clock next time I will sit on pit road they could there's less than words on the spot except floors going after right he's been in the wall a couple of times well with the young man from California running his first couple of NASCAR Sprint Cup races last weekend this week looking to the end the Daytona 500 if somehow Red Bull Racing f1 manages to continue under [Music] nowhere to go right there precut just locked it up since we blew the left that was raised in 21st place to Gloria nice job here in gray solid not creating any problem but getting at some experience and that's what he wanted to try to get was 400 miles on her spell so a mess on the back straightaway puts under caution for the seventh time in this race would still want a time to go under 12 laps left in this one last time on pit road Tony Stewart's team strategy by others shuffled in from the lead back to ninth place Stuart back up to the lead this time the more work and another decision in this position right here being the lead you stay out and try to keep some people out there than you they can hang you out I get four tires right here kind of setting up for a one more pit stop in this race that's the three at a time down there it's not too bad at it just make sure you get four tires on there but not all right I've read lips here again would you find out this time - two times what I thought I just saw passed from crew member - I live for it's not going to open up yet I think they're going to wait till they get some of the bank's rates lean because there's no sense again everybody will pit road and get tires and have to run through three maybe they know somebody's stealing their signal yeah see well there is a lot of debris to clean up out there in the back stretch and that's another reason I like for when you have a big break like this there's stuff everywhere and I don't know how many times it's happened to me you make a decision either stay on or think two times you're going to run over someone left on and have to come back in that's another reason I like to get forward as we are just shy of it Carl Edwards for the last couple of weeks literally gone door-to-door toe-to-toe if you want to put a boxing analogy on it slugging it out for the race win and for the championship lead and here in South Florida today after Stewart rallied all the way back through the field they've been on the leaders slugging it out yeah wasn't about coming here and having to finish you know just inside the top ten or inside the top 15 like we've seen a number of times this was coming here to see who's gonna win this race and literally take the championship in both for that 50-69 it really solid so far like nothing better to close this year out in victory lane so what'll it be two tires four tires but guns we'll see what happens on this round a good stock stock right side tires they got a foot too which is coming to they have not talked about what they're gonna do yet didn't catch their signals it'll be a track bar adjustment over car to type fits Darian Grubb said to the tires to tires only for Tony Stewart they waved off the port iron ball going which is she saw their Titan through the middle but they said she's been on it carl edwards dates one spot they were putting a spring rubber in there's something under the right rear of that three-team car go back to see the replay of that angle of the pitstop Andy but that would support up under that right rear look like camper minute there I thought there was have a problem to my career it looked like it may have to do some work breath guys we come from a lot further back than that to get there you've got a lot more time than we have that yeah I like his attitude but you just don't want to keep putting him back in that situation you know he's been in it enough tonight already so they just need to kind of smooth it out and figure out how to keep him upfront now you figure out what happened here right rear that ends up taking so long yeah he's got a problem there he's got a lug nut stuck in the socket and the problem is that you can't you can only use two to bear wrenches on pissed off they can't go back and get another to have to get that out of there they were going for four tires ready yeah they had to just call that new tire call so they didn't lose all of the track position so yeah got some ground to make up sleeper fortnight paint sparkles on a pit stop he did rally to recover take [Music] of pit stops talking about going toe-to-toe for the race well the races Tony Stewart after it's really pitstop discovery those damaged Shawn that 14 car and something probably from Kurt Busch's transmission that exploded that went through they had to do a lot of repair made those work though well he went to work though started passing cars he's had four cars tonight or today than anybody while Carl Edwards was upfront leading laps it was kind of easy for Carl in the beginning of the race but he's had to work for it since then since 14 cars making news to the front Stewart taking the lead not long after the last restart when he went from ninth up to the top spot in six laps that's just incredible I'm a Tony Stewart it's just so bold with these passes nothing to lose an eye but all that brown lost we got a crew of behind the wall banging the hose from the front tire change on the wall what's going on what's going on well this for sure no one has passed more cars today than Tony Stewart 63 cars he has passed so far [Music] and it's a follow up on what happened there well you guys saw is definitely a mechanical issue with that gun daniel smith the rear tire changer felt bad about it but they came over they looked at the gun trying to make sure that they don't have that issue again but definitely a mechanical failure they were going to go for tough four tires and at the last moment Darian Grubb called them off from the store two tires not necessarily because of the problem they were having on the right side he just decided they were going to go from four to two now you see him taking a closer look at that gun make sure that that sockets not going to be an issue in the future this bit sockets are made so you can hold the trigger wide open it'll still make contact with the lug nut but it if you get a little bit of wear on those sockets not on the plan that kind of problem three cars did not pit under this basha they were three who stopped under the last one when most of the leaders stayed out Jeff Burton's the leader has chosen the outside lane for the restart 88 Dale Earnhardt jr. and one of Jamie McMurray also did not pit to the hot side this time for a while [Music] [Applause] all the oil drive through where the accident was a minute ago and upfront 3y believe [Music] four wide behind him what we're seeing some aggressive hold your breath moments under Jeff Burton Stewart try to follow let's do a drive that car down in the corner right now it's amazing I know a lot of other cars did too but man he is really getting over distant win the race contact moves on these restarts Carl Edwards was no slouch on the aggressive meter in that last full run the clear tree legs on the bottom trucks it's a big run chaos just after he starts at shot through lead just a lot like having Tony Stewart's having the say-so here I don't during growth has to do anything I think the pony can do it if you give right now these kind of put all those eggs in one basket don't go back racing but this will climb [Music] trying to decide if they're going to leave the field Outlander yellow or bring them down the pit lane they stopped raining for the moment well our in-race reporter says put on one whale of a show for us tonight for this championship they've Tony Stewart Dale Jarrett you have a copy yeah but I don't know what you're saying from in there but wow what a night this has been the race between you and Carl now the fuel strategy what's your thoughts right now I just my thoughts are saving fuel the biggest thing but uh Darien says we're gonna be a good sleep on it just a matter of trying to save a little bit for a green white checker here they can't make it left they that's a good thing right now all right buddy let you go back to saving you in the bigger picture of the race yeah that's the hard thing is when you have a fast race car like that you just want it to you want to be able to use that car to take advantage of that and make a difference there you you don't put the fuel strategy to have that but that's part of the game here we've seen it happen a lot in these first 35 something like that here in there left you wanna go back in and talk this through just for medic get some folks that are watching this championship that may not watch NASCAR racing every ever even race all year long the difference in what Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards teams did stewards team chose to stay on the racetrack and stretch their fuel Tony did that by giving up his speed and backing off the gas the engine - that kind of thing to spend less time on pit road in the race but while he was giving up speed saving fuel he was also giving up speed to fresh tires that Carl Edwards had the caution kind of erased the deficit Stuart would have been in that wasn't the game they were playing they're actually playing it to make it on just one more pit stop in the race go green that caution just happened to fall right after they played that strategy and erase that big deficit that did work out it themselves insect like it and you saw the 40 t take a little extra time including both to those cans of fuel and making sure they got every drop in there they possibly each team trying to go about the same thing in different ways you spend the least amount of time you can control it at the most that question is how a race circumstances go into a well versus gotta quit raining would you have gotta get rice ball did they go [Music] so you're gonna have to see the 99 car have to come down pit road and get one for you going to be able to stay out there the other thing is you might see another caution between now in the end that's the changer the way they've been racing up on these restarts in the guillotines we might have enough I would say they continue to serve before we get my cream during top of the day all this with a championship going on within the broader context of the race there are other guys out there gonna try a play to stretch the fuel strategy to see a vacant win the race for example and that can affect the outcome can be so much here was Stewart right here he just kind of make sure that this thing gets full with you and then the caution came out Edward steer makes the flight side tire change our holy they made that last top of the green so it on took purple gallons to fill it up the key thing here is those the nine that thing just doesn't happen there's well short of that so they can't play the same strategy it's a giant chess game using 3,500 pound race bars tremendous race drivers calculators and computers for fuel mileage electronic timing to coordinate lap times and very very smart people like Bob Osborne a dairy brother to figure out a way for their car to end up at the front of the pack when the laps run out of his race you know and it's quite honest and yet everybody can't do what Tony Stewart as a driver was doing there hey just kick it into plunge and say well that should be simple that makes the race car do a lot of different things and the Karstark literally it changes way that it drives it it's not as just as easy as it sounds it just saved me the fuel that way but Tony is probably the best out there and doing that while the field follows the pace car route the jet dryers are on the track let's bring in the 1989 champion violent strategies I do hate feel bata strategies no doubt about that but I've been watching this 99 car dive in front of my calculator like crazy down here I might disagree with a little everybody else up there because I think that 99 s got no problem getting this baby to the end on feel the way I'm calculating this thing rush there's no question that these extended caution laps are helping him stretch that mileage yeah I would say the 14 car Tony Stewart's in more trouble than 99 of Carl addresses Carl was not trying to save fuel yet guys we all know from the 2008 race here Carl Edwards was a master saving field remember watching him run around a track just barely puting around so I would say right now my I bet not Carl having a little bit more gas a tank than the 14 a dead of this thing I know I kind of sent your apple cart there but this is kind of my opinion right now well watch Tony Stewart he made a pit stop was 55 to go and he had run 55 laps he just proved that he could make it on fuel and now we've got all of these caution laps I think it really puts Tony in a in a good spot to make it no problem I think this discussion has also helped the 99 which may make him be able to make a commute yeah I think this is a good debate guys no doubt about it we know fuel mileage has been really important all the time and but I've been running these numbers like crazy and I might look stupid when it's all said and done but I think he's gonna make I got to tell you how is it all going to turn out we just know they know and the weather isolated scattered showers the races been stopped three times worse load three times it stopped once by rain and as long as that precipitation keeps falling down the laps under caution or red are going to tally up and the laps left to play the strategy out onto the green shrieking yeah you know the truck race on Friday night was shortened and it was about 15 laps shy of getting to the very end but it was getting extremely late now I'm sure they'll stay later here tonight to try to get this race in but you just don't know so much at stake well big stories on tonight tonight Carla Edwards Tony Stewart pretty let's go in head-to-head for this championship like they have the last couple of weeks but getting there in bearing different banners Edwards leading the most laps on the night a hundred 19 of the 220 nobody else has led more than 29 Stewart going all the way to the back of the pack after damage picked up very early in the race needed to be repaired then a couple of pit stop problems for Stewart and he's continued to rally each time Stewart coming from his farm act as 40th in one point and now the different strategies played by the two teams big storms team stretching the fuel to try and save a trip down the pit lane while Edwards team going with alcohol a more conservative strategy or conventional strategy and still needing another trip down the pit lane talked about our caution trends and if that happens again tonight is going to change see everybody make pissed off because we're gonna be tired regardless you know we'll just see how this thing plays out and with whether we get back to green and how many laps there are to go while the dryers are on the track and the pace car is in front of the field I look back to the days of the pumpkin for this championship Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart so far they made this race live up to its advanced Billy Stewart after the first pit stop of the race hey we've got some damage and the nose of this car spend some time getting to Fitch said of all the way back to 40th spot yeah had to do a lot of work Mick Tony Stewart made up a lot of time over the race track passing cars for every good kid carl edwards meantime while stewart was back there yet the damage fixed-income was out in front leading and that stores got you the part and they raced side-by-side and truly aggressively on one event a Tony Stewart's had some great restarts and he takes the lead right here from Jeff Gordon at one point kind of stretched it out a little bit the Carl Edwards car has been strong all night long never far apart when Stewart got back in front look at this great confident race driver in his abilities in his race car see he goes about market tricks here but he signs stewardess gonna thought something had set him back a couple of hiccups on pit stops here's watch the right rear they had a luck get hump in the socket trying to change tires yeah they're gonna change four tires had to call that off and make it a two-tire stop after that problem and Stuart would rally back after each setback lady Carl Edwards no he wasn't going away Edwards back to the point on Martin Truex Jr while Stewart was keeping pace for the past four pass and they ran first and second this lasted stretch run to the race until every came out for the rain pitting then for right-side tires and fuel setting is where we are now with still in running fourth Edwards running sixth fuel to finish a question and waiting on the track drive before we see how long-term it's a strategy played by Tony Stewart big gamble and then the way came and that certainly helped them out certainly for me mileage to the regulation distance Tony Stewart and Darian Grubb are feeling good about their position he just so you know right there I mean that's that's the hard hardest we were running basically but it it made it through the stop it got out of the box okay it actually died at the last time line and but you go past where it died it took back off and the pressure start coming back up careful or that was a heartbreaker though there's in a bit row but did an awful job there you keep it around everything so that confirms our numbers right there where we're at right now we got about to lastly is very choppy shift or a jog here there you heard him say two laps to the good if it comes down to a green white checker Darian Grubb told me just a moment ago we're not quite there yet Jamie little well before these caution laps you heard Carl Edwards am Bob Osborne say they were five laps short so Carl starts thinking about every possible scenario push us right now hey guys guys shut off the negative he said now he's asking Bob Osborne over and over okay break down the 14 what are they doing are they getting better fuel mileage than us Bob to the calculations and he said the farthest we've been able to stretch it is 51 laps the farthest the 14 has gone is 14 so we should be in pretty good shape and by the way they've been turning these caution laps so by the time we go green here they should be good to go as rusty said Jamie Thanks all I can say is I want to see how it's going to turn out a whole lot of things at play here terrific Ford 400 so far tonight and the deciding just underway Tony Stewart making this championship race interest in this chase started he made his mind up he was gonna win it and I don't think anybody can stop him right now what do you we have to say anything I think our proteins have a scope for itself so he knows already trust me and then to the season finale where Tony Stewart had to fall all the way back to 40th after severely damaged every time he got to the lead something happened that kicked him farther back he was so aggressive on restarts drove his way back to the front and needed to win the race to win the championship he did just bad Tony Stewart continuing feeling that's been sports in 2011 teams just barely making the postseason and coming on strong and winning the championship the Packers would be one UConn will be another here Tony Stewart the st. knew all he had to do was stalk Elliott to the finish Elliott won the race who would be finished second and run the championship by the narrowest of margins the man they called underdog the last owner driver to win that asked our Sprint Cup Series championship tonight even did the top it gave it a close runner is equal to it because Tony Stewart tonight found a way to fight back and get to the front and win the race and he needed to win the race to win the championship and he won on a tiebreaker and look at that list that Stewart joints Richard Peddie we didn't begin the other owner driver that one and then Alan Kulwicki hits a short list Carl Edwards leading the most laps tonight but finishing in second spot to Tony Stewart and again they tie at the end of the season for most points with the tiebreaker being most wins and still the championship his third in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series well they finished first in second in the race tonight it came down to the tiebreaker your thoughts on what you saw on this night here in South Florida what I thought was the two best drivers of the year and when you gather when we came into this chase I think that everybody certainly thought they'd call it where it's had a chance to win this championship he did everything he needed to do it seemed like the best average finish of anybody ever in the chase that just wasn't enough to hold off a guy that came in without a win and then wins five of ten that's just incredible to me I've been doing this a long time and I've never seen anybody with the kind of determination that I saw from Tony Stewart to win this championship I mean it started early in the chase and it just carried on the confidence we heard it all week we heard how much confidence he had he knew he was going to do this and as hard as it was to be Carl Edwards I just can't believe how much determination and focus that it took not just in Tony Stewart but his whole team just don't think you could ask for any more than we saw from these drivers particularly the last three week three weeks racing up front from wins and races and racing door-to-door for the championship and in the end it was Tony Stewart winning the race and winning the title on a terrific night here in South Florida that will go down as one of the very best ever fights in NASCAR Sprint Cup history smoke a three-time champion
