[Music] [Music] there is Brady Quinn looking pump fakes he rolls to the near side throws it it's caught by Somoza inside the 20 inside the 10 he's going in the funny thing about that video though if you watch it after Jeff scored his touchdown the first person to greet Jeff was a good friend of mine by the name of Pat Koontz that Koontz is a defensive tackle minds and he was the first guy on the field to greet him [Music] aerial view of Notre Dame Stadium in the campus of the University of Notre Dame as our upon each Notre Dame countdown to kickoff continues the fall color is very much in evidence on this beautiful campus the golden dome in the background and earlier as the players went from mass to the stadium quarterback Brady Quinn interacting with the fans he says this walk to the stadium with all the fans gives him goosebumps and a son out at Notre Dame Stadium as the UCLA Bruins come to call only the 3rd meeting in history between these two teams UCLA and Notre Dame [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Brady grant little home votes charlie weis win has a tip today to go over 10,000 yards to passing a rare feat in college football he's only 30 yards shop and coach Weiss facing UCLA for the first time as we said these two teams have played only three times in history and it's been 42 years since the last one and from the pac-10 here the UCLA Bruins making their appearance at Notre Dame Stadium [Applause] [Music] coach Karl Doral and his young Bruin team for the first time in 42 years saw Assad at Notre Dame Stadium and the believes Notre Dame countdown to kickoff will continue in 30 seconds [Music] name stadium you're watching the box Notre Dame countdown to kickoff as we said in South Bank potty skies but the temperature in the mid-50s there's a chance of rain but folks charlie weis was always on top of everything including the weather said it should come after the game is over hello everyone welcome to Notre Dame Stadium and Tom Hammond Pat Haden here for the game between the Bruins and the Irish and as we said that folks why it's always on top of everything and he's thought about cutting off a bye week Coach Weiss had last week walk along with his Notre Dame team and he said he's taken extraordinary measures he wouldn't tell us what to prevent a letdown today as the Irish take the field against the Bruins and eight in the first BCS poll which came out last week and coach Weiss happy to that his offense is playing well well you know he's got a lot of offensive stars said but none burning brighter than that of the quarterback Brady Quinn how about the last two weeks completing three of every four passes protecting the footballs not throwing interceptions managing the game well which we talked a lot about Tom but how about I think Darius Walker is the unsung hero of this five and one Irish team can you know move the chains as a receiver as a runner you know today he celebrates his 21st birthday and you know Charlie Weis was saying to us just the other day that you know a guy like him we would like to have him touch the ball 25 times whether it's as a receiver or running using the Bruins come in at 4 and 2 their coach Carl Darrell making his first trip into Notre Dame stated me said he does appreciate the history and tradition of Notre Dame football he brings in a defense ranked ninth in the nation in total defense it's on offense they've struggled well you know they lost starting quarterback Ben Olsen a couple of weeks ago so Pat Cowen steps in and he stepped in two weeks ago against Arizona played pretty well but he gets a second career start today against Irish and hostile territory got whacked in the throat and last week and didn't really talk until Thursday of this week but there's some things to really like I think about Pat cow and he's good on the run mobile in the pocket he is a big ol athlete strong I'm in a very accurate arm of course he's gonna have to play well Tom but you mentioned the defense this is this year's UCLA's four is on defense this ninth of the NCAA in total defense that greeted 16 turnovers two of them by the freshman alter on they held four of their six opponents to less than 60 yards rushing that is phenomenal one defense and that leaves a lot of third Long's to see what they've done their second the NCAA and third down defense so they've done a lot of things well but Justin Hickman seven and a half sacks in these six games he has 11 that other tackles for losses so their defensive ends put a lot of pressure on the quarterback that's one thing that notre dame's had to trouble with protecting than that Brady Quinn so I think how they played defensively early in this game is critical for UCLA all right Notre Dame and UCLA as the Bruins play Notre Dame for the first time since 1964 you've been watching the bodies Notre Dame countdown to kickoff back after these messages from your local NBC station [Music] welcome back another name stadium UCLA and Notre Dame Notre Dame football presented to you by Sirius satellite radio at play twice previously the last time in 1964 the Ares won both previous meetings and today's game is brought to you in high-definition and a coaching matchup between two coaches who have returned to their alma mater to direct the football program from the realm and Charlie White's Justin Medlock has it teed up as Coach whites will send his offense onto the field first UCLA won the toss and deferred to the second half so there's Medlock set to kick it off Weston Grimes - deep man for know today in a script kick by Medlock bouncing around a finally picked up by David rah [Applause] the tackler but is taken down by runner on specialties pencil Brady Quinn needing 30 yards now to exceed ten thousand in his career the all-time Notre Dame leader he holds 30 Notre Dame constant records and resume our starting lineups brought to you by adidas with the water mcconnell mcknight samara and carlson rating harris-san Tucci Sullivan the freshmen who might have his hands full with Tama have rushers of the Bruins today first down quince wins the password walk around the back here Darius Walker makes a cut up and gets just about ten yards on the first play from scrimmage Walker the leading receiver this season for the Irish Tech was made by Chris Portman and here are the starting lineups brought to you by adidas for the Bruins we mentioned Hickman and Davis the defensive ends really picked up field Hickman has seven and a half sacks Davis for Whittington Taylor and Carter the linebackers Brown Horton keys and van in the secondary [Applause] we said at the very top UCLA has been a good first defensive series because Notre Dame really couldn't rise to bury put people in the first two or three drives so a great stop in the forced turnover by UCLA and Whittington lives off the field after he recovered the fumble yeah you know Tom he was hurt the prior play Whittington was hurt the prior play but stayed in the game and then I got a piece of the the fumble caused and then the recovery it was put in the put his helmet while on the football and wedding comer Darrius Walker who rarely the football flag down [Music] Darrius Walker 405 touch the ball offside fall against Notre Dame today's officiating crew from the pac-10 headed by Batman the referee Larry Farina outside defense number 95 five-yard penalty replay first down so shaky start for the Irish Gustavo I saying it's normal after a bye week to have a letdown I've taken extraordinary measures to try to prevent that we'll see if they work he wouldn't tell us what those measures were so far a turnover and then a penalty and not a good start just a really good defensive play by kids causing the fumble Center for the Royals will put man overshoots his intended receiver downfield it was William Snead let's take a look at the numbers for Patrick town getting a second start today a tough week against Oregon a good team last week in his first career start our adidas starting lineups offensively for the Bruins [Applause] Marquis Petrie Everett Brazil and pulse in the tiny and you see the offensive linemen we would try to keep Cowan from feeling the pressure today second down short drop of slant as complete puck by Marcus Everett for a UCLA first down you know we've seen a little bit of Pat Cowen the last couple of weeks he is he is Edina starting lineups for the Notre Dame de Abbey Amiri laws Landry and Fromm you remember Ronald family in the bye week quitting the Notre Dame team had been a sometime starter brockington has earned a starting hurt with his play in recent weeks so has Lambert and Zipit Kowski comes back after missing a couple game [Applause] handoff to marquis brought a crowd of blue shirts after a short game loss and martin during the first committee we just said first fumble and 400 in five touches for Darius water or dark blue actually yesterday about really kind of protecting the football they spend a lot of time on ball security you know miss necessarily mishandled or sloppy run it was just a good tackle by Chris Horton who got a hit helmet on the ball put a helmet right on the football and though he was carrying it high and tight as his coaches implore him to do [Applause] three here's Khalil bail except I fake it to him and Kalin his intended receiver the full-back Petrie the UCLA defense we talked about able to win this game his defense has to play well they came into this game foreseen 16 turnovers before the language at that the fumble by Darius Walker and his board actually 52 points off those towers and so a big third down Richardson Lambert and Duke lazy Bukowski and wooden the chiller in complete snow cloud bumpin and grindin going on there well there tom yeah but man forgetting to see if there might be a flag but there were no flag I think when two ones Tyrell Lambert the defensive man turns his head we said so many times they're not going to call him you know I think it's I think it's a good no-call so one of the best field goal kickers in America Justin Medlock who has hit 14 in a row mister first of the season has not missed since before the kick might be a false start against the Berlin's would put it back to 42nd yard right okay if UCLA can keep this game close and they had a good first defensive series but that Justin Medlock is a lock if you will at the end of the game having a merry jump to go as he drawn off or not false start number 73 so the penalty is a false start against Myka Kia the freshman right tackle for the Bruins and it will be a 47 yard attempt by Medlock [Applause] this season 51 career 75% on his field goals via stone winter will boot from 47 yards the Lee unit is up is no girl [Applause] [Music] ruins are they able to take advantage of the Notre Dame turnover Justin Medlock missing a field goal from 47 yards all alone on the UCLA sideline Erin Whittington injured he recovered the fumble in the last series but had his ankle taped and is back on the field first down for another day Brady print fakes fires batted down incomplete legless Brigham Harwell number 93 got his hands up good outside rush by Justin Hickman there these guys free leads right in here and here's hip and to watch those two guys come in very quick off the ball Hickman has just been unbelievable on the outside as a pass rusher Charlie wife saying UCLA with excellent outside speed and Ruffin it's only a yard before he is slam down by Christian tanner the middle linebacker for the Bruins you know this is where the Bruins have really been good this year on third down defense number two in the country and you stopped the first and second down and enforced those third Long's and that's why they are number two in the country only teams only convert wedding about 23% there it is 23% and of course Notre Dame struggled with third down conversions earlier and they've been much better since Carly wife's made it a point of emphasis over the last few weeks getting more yardage first and second down makes it easier on third of course and here they're facing that third and long you mentioned visually the other defensive ends loose dips with a part of that little good defensive team when given time fires his receiver but for the first hour Damon twisted to the turf take a good sure tackle that time by the UCLA defense which was a problem for them in their lawsuit against Oregon the last we hear you're right time they missed what 33 tackles it was counted against Oregon but a short Akal boy over on Verner the freshman has really had a dramatic start for the Bruins in his first six games burner has had two interception returns for touchdowns he won't even be eighteen until next month saw the putter Jeff price and freeze is the deep man for UCLA [Applause] price had a tremendous year and he gets it to a fair cast taken by graves and around the UCLA 20 a 45-yard Club so Brady Quinn a turnover and then bring it out got start for Notre Dame back at Notre Dame Stadium scoreless first quarter that you said the UCLA defense must play well early to give the Berlin's a chance they have done just that and forced to turn over and then a three and outside say that's excellent defense so the birds take over with their offense again marquis carrying tacklers with him across the 25 to the 26 yard line the game Tom we thought they useless events had to start well what they have how on the opening drive the fourth corner of turnover [Music] and then a shirt AK you mentioned they tackle clearly against Oregon toward the attacker thereby burners then forced the fun so do the been put played very very well and eight yard first I'll carry my marquee [Applause] tip is the releases but has this man on the slap jr. Taylor he catches it for a Bruin first down by Lambert after a gain of eight and against the hardest thing you know for quarterbacks to hang in the pocket in the pocket knowing you're gonna take a shot and then go to the boy at your dad Callen hasn't played a lot but I'm telling you his teammates believe in this guy we talked to four or five boring players this week they think boozy leadership it could be a very good point [Music] last week [Applause] next the play-action fittin goes up top with overshoots his intended receiver man with us and for more on Patton Cowan let's go down to Lewis get Tom I talked to Carl Darrell before the game about Pat Collins voice and he said that they tried to keep him quiet on Monday and Tuesday Wednesday they began to let him bark out some calls and Thursday was a bull go for him today they do have some silent counts they can use but you got to remember a Notre Dame Stadium especially down on this end of the field is due to section it's opted out if he has to play this week a sinner Michael a Robert I was talking points Khalil Bell on the carry for the Bruins and another good game Maurice Crum makes the notre-dame tackle you know you talk well this is why he wasn't he for the speedloader to watch this yard with in jail a map at Calvin's takes last week against Oregon right to the throat and they said that the last Drive he was his voice was just a whisper and as Lewis just imported all week they had planned a plan B and Plan C for communications this week if he didn't get his voice back but he was back by Thursday they said he's fine now when actually [Applause] and fighting forward for yardage Khalil bell with Joe brought Canton senior linebacker for the Irish latching on to him it'll be close to first down yardage seems like they'll market just short today one thing I've seen from UCLA's offensive play calling early in this game has been a much more aggressive go for it here on fourth down I think so half steps a little good to over 200 pound back so UCLA fourth down nicely play clock at 10 they're gonna have to use a timeout [Applause] at UCLA pondering a fourth and less than a yard here in the first quarter at Notre Dame seven minutes 48 seconds on the clock in a scoreless first fourth down for the Bruins when we return [Applause] going for on 4th and less than er talent eats and didn't make it [Music] [Applause] this essentially empty the vacuum [Applause] [Music] for Pat Cowen to go [Applause] in particular they stopped chai the center and Callen just ran into a wall so aggressive plate balling they go for it do not make it and turn the ball over to the Irish not being aggressive in the play going this year I still think it's the right call and a half yard to go on the road playing a top 10 team I think you'd give yourself a chance to keep the ball back out on that stout defense to try to hold Notre Dame they began at the UCLA 44 yard line hey hey he was behind Rodney van and Quinn fake to Walker fake the end around and then went deep to McKnight you don't they look like they've had a week off though here's McKnight down here and again after the double fake he was wide open by five yards but they fumbled on the first series this is an easy touchdown that Brady quit I don't see you don't see you miss this I haven't seen him is pass like this in four years misses out McKnight stretching out the incomplete second down and ten sometimes I approach is like to keep playing when their teams are hot and not happily [Applause] Freeman the motion man to Walker and Gary a various inside the 40-yard line the first two drives for Notre Dame resulting in a Darius Walker fumble and then three and out one of the hallmarks of Charlie Weis is those fast starts you know last year twelve games is for eight touchdowns that opening drives and they their last two games against Purdue and Stanford scored a touchdown on the opening drive and twice they have to survive the early part of the game against Notre Dame particularly here to make a push in the fourth quarter third down and five from the shotgun formation [Applause] [Music] the Irish it was called Duncan the backup right tackle he comes in to spell the freshman Sam young at times fumble on this touchdown pugs are gonna bat against the UCLA off that's offside against you to blue right tackle absolutely moves Duncan watch number 72 right here no contact I D perhaps in open up to 17 five-yard penalty yardage results in a purse down just inhibitor that should be enough for a first down there is no that isn't it just shorter his third in six yeah just short of the first down they they haven't moved a changing and I don't see how that was a penalty against UCLA it wasn't a penile in his certainly shouldn't've been a first down and it is not third down and less than a yard I was getting a break [Applause] Walker very nice what powering ahead close to the first down marker as they unstacked it looks like they're gonna spot it just short if that lines wood is below use his foot to mark the spot charlie weis likes to go for it on fourth down right he's been awfully 10 of 13 bedroom good defensive line play we're gonna measure to see if Walker picked up the first appears to be just short but there'll be no hesitation coach Weis and going for it I wouldn't imagine play by Justin Hickman now I kind of known as a pass rusher good short yardage play by the defensive end when we go to the first down for that without foot Oh twice gives Brady Quinn the call he's been excellent of course on quarterback sneaks although we saw the stop of Patrick Cowen on a sneak in about the same situation a moment ago as the number fourth down conversions ten of 13 at 4:04 on quarterback sneaks on fourth down [Applause] take the water fire [Music] [Applause] the quarterbacks best friend the tight is a big old tight end they can get deep and I thank Dennis geez Patti pretty wet that was right over here and I'd say he was expecting pretty good was expecting to come Bridal with a pretty good catch by the tight end carlson remember it was a fourth in one play against Michigan State that they call for a big game as well as part of their remarkable comeback so first and goal for the ivories just inside the UCLA 10 first for [Applause] we'll just ignore that go along Darius Walker runs a lot of drawers for Charlie watch he calls a lot of drop place to run beginning this really good vision let's the develop doesn't rush things those screens to him and then runs drawers this is at least the second draw he's run today he has such good vision it seemed like a draw would be the the perfect play for him too and so Brady Quinn with that last pass to Carlson has reached to 10,000 yard mark the thirty-second quarterback in major college football who achieved that mark made by Christian Taylor Kristen tail pointing with a bum ankle the middle linebacker for for UCLA what a time lampreys are disgusted with the way he played against Oregon talked to Christian Taylor this week he said I you know on Wednesday he was ready to play so you know he said we were really looking forward to playing a high-powered offense like the way we played against Oregon Tech last week in the red zone this is where Charlie White says the score TDS he said don't be misled by those percentages TVs are what you are and they [Applause] [Music] anywhere to these big to and evoluted wide receivers at Jeff Samardzija at six five the six custody catch of the year his 21st over the past two years and we talked about that strikes on being so mourns when you have a guy like so hard to jump about them catching and para Joya adds the extra points Geoff's Marcia will the touchdown heads for Brady Quinn with 17 touchdown pass of the test on Jesus one of the trademarks of Notre Dame football on the University of Notre Dame campus as the Irish take on UCLA today's game brought to you by Sirius satellite radio Brian Burkhardt will kick it off for the Irish [Applause] or UCLA [Applause] as coverage by the Irish yes Bell brings it across the 20-yard line and stop there Johnson would look at Notre Dame's last scoring drive for the second time this year they've gone downtown to their Titan John Carlson on fourth and one and then inside one played by Darius Walker using that terrific vision he is and in you throw up your big 65 watt the goalposts to touch and there they are shuts down twins win passing ten thousand three Samara with the touchdown catch his 21st Mays for [Applause] Callens trying to get a deep one [Music] blackbirds third interception of the season the eternal I ever got the story nod second game in a row started the season as their Nickelback kind of preserved their BCS hopes with two interceptions against Michigan State and you can't play the deep ball any better mentor out Lamberty primary players took it away from Everett and the Irish have that turnover bird interception 3:28 to go on the first irish leading the bruins 7-nothing area view of Notre Dame Stadium and today's aerial coverage brought to you by Goodyear tires featuring triple tread technology with three separate tread zones for peace of mind in any weather Tom Hammond Pat Haden Louis Johnson Terrell Lambert just picking off a pass for the third time this season what a year he's everything as I said preserved if they get to a BCS bowl he's the guy that preserved that opportunity well hey I didn't complete his ride a man was running right with him atop you think about throughout Lambert I remember charlie weis talked it was really last year seen when he first got it was afraid to be al Lambert even on the field and you know he just worked hard and he started this year in their nickel package plate you know most of the game against Georgia Tech as a nickel back but deserved more and more and more playing time in the and it starts the last two games has steadily earned it to earn the trust to coach Weiss the californium with the interception against UCLA Darius Walker for a loss of the yard that was a Reggie Carter that's stuck him right behind the line of scrimmage now new defensive coordinator Dwayne Walker has these guys last year they are tough but for that one core they have been very difficult to run against [Music] drive aided by a questionable penalty call for offside against the Bruins when it didn't appear to be any contact or unabated in quarterback [Applause] for Brady Quinn right up here [Applause] under pressure goes down in short puffs name is Justin hit the net apiece and now Walker and take it over women chocolatey over there Taylor was covering Walker the past short hop to see who was John but on Wednesday trust me what's Justin Hickman you know his keeps coming keeps coming just gonna bulrush the sin to cheat and just gets a piece of Brady Quinn so we can't step into throat so the UCLA defense with another good series and Jeff prize graves is deep so you said eyes defense a year ago was a hundred and sixteenth in Russian much different dinner [Applause] signals it toward grades no fair cats this time he feels [Music] [Applause] is surrounded members in John Carl Silla tidy and wraps him up for the tackle seven yards on the return cupboard 39 John Carlson catches the ball on fourth and one then runs down on a punt you know a lot of the first teamers playing special teams for Charlie Weis and the Carlson a real success story is unknown perhaps throughout much of college football but as coach y said has put him in position to be drafted in the first day by an NFL team our return team number 30 10-yard penalty first down Carlson will have a decision to make at the end of the season whether to come back for another year of eligibility or declare for the draft Derrick Williams [Music] so first down for UCLA the 213 showing on the clock in the first quarter Carlson made that special teams tackle and then the step off against the Bruins will set them back even further it'll be their ball at the 13 when we come back to Notre Dame Stadium beautiful time of the year on the campus of the University of Notre Dame with a fall foliage and pinche mister today we want to invite you to visit NBC sports.com a half-hour before every NBC Notre Dame telecast for the Vantage Notre Dame countdown to kickoff anything know about the upcoming game at NBC sports.com Paul Hornung the gold was on the show with Paula today and David's fifty years since he won his Heisman Trophy honored before the game his picture on the cover of the game program today as the Eilish get Chris Marquis carrying tacklers Thomason brockington with him for a gain of 10 nice run by Chris Marquis an MMA they'd missed some opportunities here a missed field goal then they got stopped on the 4th down and inches the interception a lot more aggressive the play callings been more aggressive they throw more clothes downfield but now they've just got to make something happen I'm gonna add two perceptions over 25 yards this year she dances around and gets a couple of tough yards I just think it's so hard to be methodical and college football receivers from backs that can go from 40 50 60 yards Carl Darrell did that when he was a receiver but they just haven't caught a lot of long pass to the long catch by Brazil of 25 yards that's that that's the warmest reception by a wide receiver they're tight and moving Paulson has caught one 446 but that makes it hard on offense if you've got a drive 70 80 the defense respect that threat as well they floated up to old times today to technically means tailor latches on to that one short of the first down to tailor a good story blew out his knee last year against Oklahoma and you know had a cadavers tendon for place to put in the into his knee and worked very very hard his losses every day the summer at five o'clock to work out but a nice start to his season a maybe the game ranking 17th all-time at UCLA with 91 career receptions the former mesa arizona high school all-american town you know they UCLA defense has played well the score in the first quarter this is a to do so the office to convert caught is it a first down that'll be the question Baumgartner Andrew Baumgartner only his fourth reception of this season and it appears to be enough for the Berlin first down I like Pat Callen on the move against the only came in against Arizona when Ben Olsen was hurt later 2029 very first play that he was in they call the pass he completed it it was three for three and his opening drive and you know against Arizona really good in the move [Applause] play marquee short of the 40-yard line trying to make that first down mark in today's first and 10 line brought to you by Xerox smart key I think is a pretty effective player necessarily dazzle you Tom but who'd like Darius Walker kind of a a chain mover good receiver good water good solid water inside the zone blocking scheme good pass protector [Applause] he was Louisa [Music] bouncing off tacklers there before he swamped short of the first down Marquis is that you know great balance at his 204 pounds short 511 but just he's very very hard to knock off his feet Chris Marquis and some forces some missed tackles by the Notre Dame defense and that'll be the final play of the first quarter from Notre Dame Stadium with the Irish leading the Bruins by a count of 7 nothing will return to Notre Dame Stadium after these messages from your local NBC station you're watching Notre Dame football presented by Sirius satellite radio there is Brady Quinn looking pump fakes he rolls to the near side throws it it's caught by Somoza inside the 20 inside the 10 he's going in the funny thing about that video though if you watch it after Jeff scored his touchdown the first person to greet Jeff was a good friend of mine by the name of Pat Koontz Pat Koontz is a defensive tackle minds and he was the first guy on the field to greet him start the second quarter with Notre Dame leading UCLA 7 nothing Notre Dame football presented by Sirius satellite radio afternoon another damn state five and one ruin scoring to her down here or UCLA hit and accept the first down it was indeed a strong run by the junior from ruling Louisiana in the New Orleans area so UCLA hanged me right there with a Notre Dame so far their defense made a couple of nice plays and the outfits sourabh starting to get on track well the defense tackling what's better they did last week against Oregon now that was the 33 missed tackles last week in when Oregon ran for 256 yards knew much better defensive tackling today and they just converted to third and Reese on this Drive this drive for the Bruins started at their own 13 yard line play pass short hop incomplete one diving attempts made for the reception of history blows Marcus Evert that tried to get it did you have a Miri put the pressure on know we always talk so much about sacks and those kind of things that often times pressures and they just as important and Victoria variant at Calais ace top-ranked Buckeyes rolling again the Nebraskan Texas in a good one we still unbeaten Wisconsin moving up in the rankings so the surprise team to me in football beating Ole Miss the panels and a couple of weeks before he came back he fights to get back to the line of scrimmage Landry had a hold of him and several other Irish defenders triple rocks collecting so Darrell Lampert who continues to shine to the Irish as a devotee has defender and tackler triple laws and durability until delivery you know to good inside guys to quickens yeah or they get off the ball so fast inside yeah thirty-two tackle Clarett soon 1630 nice tackle - thereby [Applause] defense an interception earlier [Applause] in the pocket dodges the rush [Applause] and it's complete his past planned for UCLA receiver this season 54 yards [Music] 25 and he's got a strong or and Everett and Brazil were right there together usually that spells disaster for a team when they have two men running around join together with everett snatched it out of the air took it in for the score that locks extra for equal time x7 so UCLA's strikes 52 yards on the pass play and amarka separatist reception of the season from Notre Dame Stadium the Delhi the silica there in the foreground and at the stadium sold into the 119th Executive time it's a seven seven game as everett catches a 52 yard pass from Callen to tie the game that was about to get sacked just gonna follow more time I step it up in the pocket just drilled him as the Bruins converted three third downs on that drive Medlock will kick it off to either Norwest [Applause] David Grimes TR and did not make the 20-yard slap down at the 17 on good special teams coverage of the Brewers here's the consent yeah you see the way just kind of stepped up in the pocket he was about to get brought down by Viktor happy merry but this is going away by Pat Cowen kept his eyes downfield the whole way top of the screen is his Marcus ever enjoyed his stuff like Brazil number one just got slowed down thinking he was gonna get it it was intended for Everett makes a nice catch off the foot pool from Cowen to tie the score to the play good Drive so Irish for the first down at their 17 yard line numbers on the UCLA drive three wide receivers McKnight Anastasio and Samardzija and off the Walkman check attack got my emotion and then ducks out of bounds after a nice gain on first down is nifty he's elusive no he's durable and you know his durability it really allows charlie weis to change his roster if you will by movie Travis Thomas to defense get more speed on defense only you'd only do that because Darius Walker is so strong and does not get hurt [Applause] McKnight ducks out of bounds after trading up the first task in front of Rodney van say to us yesterday benhams just so quick in and out of breaks just a little quick out there is touchdown pass in five straight games so good for a lot of first downs is Raymond McKnight 1370 20 of those when first downs half of the third down conversion [Applause] none against this tough UCLA defense so much better against the run today in store again good as we told you on the season Christian Taylor just a Christian finding on the stop the numbers for the season for UCLA giving up only 84 rushing yards a game 14th in all of college football and the UCLA defense has been opportunistic causing a lot of turnovers eight fumble recoveries and eight interceptions now [Applause] man-boy downfield night to fall and to our wrists are to UCLA defenders were there good play by Dennis keys the free safety went over to help Rodney van to annoy me Dennis keys really covered some territory number 11 the free safety guy who almost gave up football a couple of years ago but hung in there hung in there and you know adjusting to the ball much better this year than he ever has but a third and long to the Irish [Applause] on Dennis keys who Birmingham high school all-american wedding back and defensive back there rushed for nearly 1700 yards and thirty six touchdowns I feel comfortable the precinct [Applause] play stop [Applause] so go to name looks like notre-dame charlie weis I think call the timeout just as Brady Quinn was ready to get to play underway so timeout taken by the Irish he comes with 12 21 on the clock this is the second quarter and where 7-7 7/7 game Dewayne Walker the defensive coordinator came to coming over from the NFL like Charlie Weis and having an immediate impact on the defense of the Bruins so much improved actually the invoice run of stats for year elegant Andrew he was assistant to a defensive back coach and kind of the game within the game is his defense ties to Stinney Pro twice and his play call until another day two hitmen down here again when face a lot this first [Applause] and in [Applause] the amazing thing about coming into this game tom he had 19 total tackles 18 of them were actually on the other side of the line of scrimmage he had 7.5 sacks and then 11 tackles for loss so when you play against just a hit when you're playing your side of the line of scrimmage as Hickman swings Quinn to the turf price will run from his own goal line and Graves deep for the Bruins UCLA you can actually feel position out of this one as price [Applause] graves calls for attention takes it the 49-yard putt good effort by price and there is a look at Justin Hickman the senior from Glendale Arizona his son of Donny Hickman a great player at USC with the Rams but Justin Hickman is a guy that has done it all season long opener against Utah just place on the other line of scrimmage I've never seen a guy you know 18 of his 19 tackles have been tackles for losses you know three sacks against Stanford one of the caused a fumble those returned for a touchdown [Music] [Applause] then you sure did first down past power lord Lambert at disposition on average incidental contact there incomplete as once again they stretched the field down something they haven't done most of the season there's a numbers on Nicollet very impressively we talked and adjusted Higgs Wednesday over the UCLA campus so they were talking about its past brushing skills that a that first step is the most two thing and then remember II said I've got a plethora of brushes that means a lot let's go he's used most of today a plethora thanks Reza consecutive translation [Music] second in town throws back monkeys Chris from number 75 found a leading the way there they burn a tally no longer part of the program so Chris the girls run dry kinda started half the games they usually start here against passing teams and Terry started against the running teams but Chris bomb has had a nice year as a pass rusher in particular from another California went to Hart High School in Newhall California offensive and GSC third I'm say on the screen mark [Applause] short of the first down didn't work he rushed the first being the time maybe it should have waited for someone make a name but it's short of the first down in number 71 watch him out in front and just kind of wait for him maybe off his hip and cuts it outside I think he's got the first down so Aaron Perez will cut for UCLA and George West is deep for the Irish good series with another name defense [Applause] and it reaches the end zone apply for the touchback covered 55 but a net of 35 it'll come out of the 20 where the Irish take over with Brady Quinn under center when we return [Music] just under ten minutes to go first half seven seven game since the Samara touchdown reception Notre Dame has had two drives have both that resulted in three plays and out in fact both gave negative yardage minus 1 and minus 16 after the sack of Quinn I always take over on the third drive now and again that play underway penalty Flags talk about how well this UCLA offenses played Notre Dame has had 11 rushes for just 15 yards and then they'd be tackling so much better last week against Oregon the Ray Vaughn 256 yards to go to the lot of Mustangs 33 of us accountable much better tackling today kosta fumble Darren the old [Music] lately different defensive effort today then against Oregon a week ago just three first dad's today some 33 missed tackles last week today just three you miss campus Marcus Freeman the tight end who's guilty of a false start and in five yards for what there was a short halftime [Music] Sam Young had terrific walk that time on Justin Hickman you know just Nick woods having a good first half and there's the freshman Sam Young who charlie weis to say it just gets better every single week number 74 watch here you know what Hickman is done to a lot of other tackles not only today but this year and then Sam young just got a ride to write the ground and for twice a but Sam shows no signs of hitting a wall like many freshmen do this time of the season fifteen the plane from the defensive line of the Brewers the short tackle trip to one of the things by say Leon I think these big guys are so good at the Trista and Sam yelling which is one of those guys series six seven almost 300 pounds but Dibley for ten years in florida he played basketball he was a baseball pitcher state the shot put champion skateboard just just a big ol Atlan third down and 13 [Applause] shotgun formation rolling to his life the blockers move with him cannot even pick off now sporting the strong safety what a play by more important habits be sure get and then the ball comes loose and the Irish dumpling team Justin Hickman up front to allowed Brady Quinn to get this ball off that just undercuts the receiver does work and McKnight plays defensive back there as he strips the ball free much much different UCLA defense certainly than last year and even different than last week from storage and then had their problems George puck as Jeff price takes aim on brain fatigue and for UCLA I always thank you very much I'm hoping you wouldn't 21 yards on the shanked punt by price and UCLA will send its offense out and Notre Dame territory have a three very uncharacteristic of the leis from Notre Dame this year the shape fund you know a miss touchdown pass to a wide open receiver by Brady Quinn and then a fumble by Darius Walker and coach y saying that he was fearful of the letdown normal after a we the students on their fall break had not been on campus have been rather quiet and UCLA taking advantage draw play mark P so the cup stuck on that safety spot to hit him Tom's a Bukowski returning to action after the injury he was hit for the left hand which caused some weakness in his shoulder held out by coach Weiss and puts Weiss telling us yesterday that doubtful he would play the whole game today because he does not want to take a chance with Pacific housekeys health and he'll decide sometime during the game that city Kowski probably will come out you know he's one of those guys that just loves to play football in football he'd sign up for both dance and incomplete that was Landry that was on him in an instance Tommy Garrett Landry crowding the line of scrimmage I mean it looked like it was going to be disasters from pat count even before the ball was snapped because of number 66 getting that quick jump you know and I think you need to change the snap up count on their plan to each other laws reports well here's another key third down we've seen a lot up from this first half on both sides of the football seven [Applause] compete [Applause] for the touchdown speed first perception of the season was a defensive lineman three weeks ago time he took it in six yards he played the first three games to the Bruins as a defensive Guaymas Ryan injured JJ Evan to my office really three weeks ago you know pretty good athlete in Williams need and you saw some that right there Justin Medlock attempts squats through the Armistice sneaking inside that and UCLA has sucked the Irish with the Bruins about a 14-point underdog have taken the lead on this touchdown reception by William 14-7 UCLA takes the lead over Notre Dame with seven 18 left Bruins have scored 14 straight as we look at our Lincoln scoring drives Sneed's first career catch is for untouched oh you know and they haven't had many explosive plays this year yet but - in the first half against Notre Dame deadlock will kick it off in front of the shocked sellout crowd here at Notre Dame Stadium Weston Grimes deep [Applause] Grimes a yard deep comes out with it twice he's done that and twice it has not been a good decision pounded to the turf short of the 20 yard line with Ramirez nothing the special teams for the Bruins let's have another look at that scoring drive with a free play drive highlighted it's William Smith I'm not sure what kind of defensive lineman he was but he looks like it's gonna be a pretty good tight end Tom he's 255 pounds a similar to that played Purdue had were ahead of two Notre Dame defenders hit each other and Lee gave up a touchdown with nice big play by William Steig 36 yard touchdown catch to put the Bruins on top on that Lincoln scoring drive you saw tacklers bouncing off the big guy and now Notre Dame takes over their last three possessions have all been three and out play-action fake Brady Quinn goes to work the freeman mr. Paulson excuse me it's Carlson makes the catch the gain is minimal the good tackle that time by Chris Horton there came into the game is their leading tackler also has a couple in fly exceptions he's a guy that his playing time was a long time coming freshman news redshirted then broken wrist broke a foot destroyed the net fortuna Paulson again and another fiber Sims arcade that was enough for the first down [Applause] you miss charlie weis trying to up the tempo of the game now 623 to go second quarter he's going to the no I try to change the tempo change the pace I like if it really helped on a second half the Michigan State game and that improbable win and tried to jump start maybe a little flat offense here when you see a let's play off the good defense we have that pass mr. Grimes UCLA giving up the the underneath completions burner playing it safe that time making an attack the short of the first down but only by a yard yeah I think you know doing walk the defensive board of you just a bit too conservatively conservative defensive either you know you got to keep coming send those those defensive ends Hickman and Davis that time by Rodney damn man may have prevented the first down he's pending on the spot of the football it's gonna be short sommore job is a hard guy to tackle in the open field Denis Roddy van got a piece of him there I said it was short they're gonna measure it actually Ronnie van who struggled against Washington a few weeks ago makes a very nice play there so it is close and the chains come out and it is indeed short of the first down not by much [Music] Smith is smidgen smidgen just slightly more than a little bit third down conversions have been poor for the Irish today this one though a third down in inches [Applause] it's a Reggie part of the defensive line back before the bull one's gonna wave in his arms they forget they're on their own five thousand well debate about the bay is all 250 of them were cheery when the band came about five thousand booing sands but Reggie's got understanding he's on the road [Applause] so unstoppable when it's the short yardage quarterback sneak and he appears to have the first-rate quit is bigger than most findings it needed 60 or 230 pounds close-up look funnier than me is a strong young man and not only is he a strong young man he's passed 10,000 career yards passing today but he is a delightful young man you know I think he's done just about everything you could ask for a quarterback a Notre Dame to do except chip still hoping he can do that trick some other scores Missouri losing for the first time then stepped up he's in trouble in tackle for another sack this time by whistling that's the other defensive end Bruce Davis Walker the defensive coordinator predicate Bruce Davis was kind of a lost player in this program until this year it's around Ryan Harris really wasn't Ryan Harris y'all could cockroach downfield but Bruce Davis really was kind of a lying bagger didn't play much and then that man Duane Walker sabia pass Russian specialists as a defensive end on the open side and go tackle the quarterback he's done it the South Koreans Davis and Hickman trying to set up it's like UCLA was all over it as they got penetration and it never set up properly intended for there is dr. on the screenplay and it results in another third and long for the Irish the Garrick Neil number two kind of read that screen pretty well kind of broke that one up Roddy van to Notre Dame this first half [Applause] we're giving plenty of time short of the first down he wants falling progress he's not gonna give us the Turkish short of the first down his van ran him out of bounds so they're going to go for it on fourth down one day he saw some of the strengths of Grady Quinn's arm that meant long out route and Bremen that sort of a toughest two passes to make isn't it is you a pretty good cover dreamer make make comes back to the ball and that's where the quarterback loves to see now you can get the floors down but those are than a man knocks it away they go for it a hand fourth down to the yard another quarterback Steve he's not been stopped [Music] a little change of pace on the quarterback sneak and the or they district ordinarily goes right over his Center John Sullivan's like a almost a quarterback draw that has stepped around his left guard and said too cheap and we used the block of Ryan Harris his left pack student she does a nice job of clearing the way for Brady Quinn when those subtle little things that help you win a nice little scene there so the drive continues after another fourth down conversions [Applause] slam midnight against this Notre Dame off as a team with their stars on offense those procedures of a tight end area scruffy you just can never relax Kenya Tom it's so many guys that you think it breaking gables and they go to the no-huddle dip the tempo and to prevent as some of the UCLA defensive substitutions and they're marching down the field first down [Music] thirty-six [Applause] [Music] [Applause] by John browsing the time for John Carson on eastbound he's open give him a chance throw him the ball big strong guy with really strong hands doesn't bobble the ball in a quarterback with a lot of confidence in his tight end John Coast macmail tactimon odd until he had 20 yards and there are the season numbers for John Carlson who is rapidly becoming one of the best tight ends in college football replacing Anthony Fasano who was so good last year many said well they're gonna they're going to be hurting it tight in uh absolutely and take a look at some of these terrific catches by John Carlson the six-foot-six tied an opening game against Georgia Tech that was like a Nathon and to just kind of hung with it against Penn State right down the middle defenders on its michigan state and made a big catch on fourth and one this one I think is 62 yards into the house [Music] [Applause] looking at twice right then think about John Carlson he came in that class of 2003 great break Osen the Hylian could in the country and Fasano last year put up such great numbers Paul Carlson is done as make them look gun average Mike Colson was here Fasano was here when he first came you know Olson transferred cesano leaves early and he need have gotten a chance to play all of a sudden he'd become a star for the Irish fortuitous circumstance perhaps I just can't tell you [Music] but you could get the ball downfield 20 30 yards for you what a weapon saw the current Drive after UCLA took the time out first down for the Irish pin is hit seven of eight on this Drive when in trouble escape one man and another inside the ten-yard davis-bacon is just so strong and I know area arched Angeles gonna holds their breath every time he scrambles but he always seems to bounce back up the athletic guy himself the right arm that's left was a quick tonic back yet [Music] the nola model has indeed up the tempo it's second down and argh [Applause] [Music] his walk is hot the suitors when he parted the first year latch on - Darius Walker first man in there miss river has the ruined defenses he looked up against the run today rigid quarter that time into the outside linebackers good penetration three four white jerseys around darius waffle good team defense trying to force the tournament this trip another third down this one third down and two pick your poison semaj Coulson and Walker to defend Samar's is emotional [Music] [Applause] you see la défense tough against the rushing attack short of the first down it'll be fourth I thought Darius Walker was gonna get stopped about the n-word short of that gonna give it back yeah yeah really a determined run by dares what may be about to go absolutely nowhere said you cheatin said dude you trying to find it over the whole forum but Ray Brown number 23 comes in and trying to take the ball away from I'm gonna measure gonna the football and you know one lick choice you know you haven't stepped Lady Queen yet on quarterbacks Nathan and you know give Darius Walker it should have been for for two but he just got to keep going and churn and then churn and churn in the f fourth and an inch now miss so another fourth down for the Irish this long drives in the no-huddle now they do huddle up punctuated by some third and fourth on conversions fifteen play of the drive fourth down and one chain-link still perfect it would appear [Applause] unstacking Sam young the parchment getting his nose wet in there he teach the boys all about this game now I've got it figured out former swimmer the shot-putter skateboarder for whatever yeah and REM blade is significant there you go so first and goal I was just saw how the UCLA bust yard line after this quarterback sneak that's three today for Quinn right went over the center they went to his left that time to his right and the Irish have been awfully good in the red zone this year first and goal three tight ends Carlson Freeman the eighth one Darius Walker the lone setback Samar's Illinois [Music] inside the five watt song and bring him Harwell number 93 got a piece of him really early Bruce Davis today but before well inside tech where they got their first ever night with 300 round it's gonna dives at his feet slowed him down second and goal linear Prince the freshman running back makes an appearance in the backfield three wide receivers this time second and goal top shows 42 seconds repelling would fall under the interesting just a moment ago I said the play earlier Brady Clint if I picked up a piece of loose toast and threw it you know 10 yards away from so he was gonna slip it around does there again boy you know he has been so good in the finally dry season touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown take a timeout here with just 16 seconds left and facing a 3rd and goal at the 6 yard line of UCLA closing seconds of a half ban Notre Dame hoping to tie it up sixteen seconds left in the first half Notre Dame with a third and goal from the 6 yard line of UCLA's this should be the 18th play of the drive which is covered so far 74 yards and over 7 minutes on the clock and as included for 4000 virgins and McKnight right in the same side and timeout taken by UCLA good use of the defensive timeout yeah very good use it was gonna go waste it anyway so call the timeout that was their final one Notre Dame has one timeout left so just 16 seconds remaining before we'll send you to the Toyota halftime show Jimmy Roberts back in our New York studio and he'll be joined by Peter King will have NFL news in fact take a look at some of the NFL draft prospects for some of the Irish players they'll also have college football scores and highlights and we remind you that if you'd like to see the halftime performances of the Notre Dame and UCLA bands you can see those live at NBC sports.com it's all coming up the Toyota halftime show is 16 seconds of game clock away then we talked about how good Brady Quinn has been in the last Drive of the half this year it has been awfully impressive beginning when they really needed it again that first half against Georgia Tech in the Oklahoma then Rima McKnight against Penn State Michigan you know him off that game finds Jeff Samardzija in the back of the end zone and then McKnight again against Stanford so not settling for few goals really setting the temple and they in the game for the third quarter with those second half drives for second quarter rocks for the six games this year he's conducted drives resulting in a touchdown just before half-time and trying to work that magic here with 16 seconds left third and goal six yard line empty backfield and five wide receivers I haven't seen this set this year [Applause] about the three yard line you think the audible get caught yes they do he still has a timeout remaining the six-second they ought to use it when his teammates ought to use it cuz he's down in the bottom of the pot go down to five before they stop it that's what the end of the ran a quarterback draw against Georgia Tech we just saw that a moment ago and of course Charlie Weis says when you get to the red zone you have to score touchdowns well it's tough to throw the ball in the red zone because there's a limited area of field that defenders have to cover but I think that if your team has a mindset that touchdowns are the goal not field goals usually you have a chance for more productivity however here comes the field goal team another good defensive stop if you will or series for the Bruins of UCLA you know there's Carl Joya who has three of six available here at they did couple weeks ago this would be a 21-yard his him in Samarra to the holder ran the fee and ran it in for a touchdown so Joya a 21-yard attempt if it's not a fake and it will be good so with five seconds left in the half charlie weis elects to go hay field goal [Applause] means that the Irish will leave the field at their first half that saw UCLA take the fight to them and lead the Irish 14 to 10 comes of a cows key in the Irish defense giving up two touchdowns to UCLA and the UCLA defense has been extra special tough here in this first half long drive just before half-time for Brady Quinn and the Irish offense when unable to punch it in for the touchdown let's go to Louis all right Tom thanks a lot we'll coach this is the office who were looking for I guess those big plays talked about the way Pat Cowen has carried the team so far well he's made a couple of great throws obviously with getting us a couple touchdowns was good to see a William Snead make the last touchdown his first catch me a touchdown has a pretty good percentage of scored for tuck super cats but we're off to a good start had one mistake in the first quarter where we went for it but you know that probably gave us a little bit of a boost to get going and quickly.you defense defense is battling well so they're back to the normal they're back to doing the way that they were supposed to do and the play well all right Karl thanks Tom all right Louis so halftime here at Notre Dame Stadium with UCLA leading Notre Dame 14 to 10 and plenty ahead Jimmy Roberts joined by Peter King in our New York studio and a reminder the halftime performances of the Notre Dame in UCLA bands live on NBC sports.com but now it's time for the Toyota halftime show let's go to Jimmy Roberts there is Brady Quinn looking pump fakes he rolls to the near side throws it it's caught by Somoza inside the 20 inside the 10 he's going in the funny thing about that video though if you watch it after Jeff scored his touchdown the first person to greet Jeff was a good friend of mine by the name of Pat Koontz Pat Koontz is a defensive tackle Minds but he was the first guy on the field to greet him heading to start of the third quarter with UCLA leading Notre Dame and couple moments ago Lewis Johnson caught up with coach Charlie White's dos Walker big night in Samarra Pat held in check in the first half how do you get them going on offense er in the second half I mean they they've done a nice job on defense right there we're just gonna have a couple little things to change this up when we get going here in a third quarter and what about trying to put some pressure on Pat cow in their quarterback what do you do with him well then they've made two big players in the pass game right here other than that the defense's that play pretty strong stout except for the two big plays we just can't give up the big play all right coach thank you you up all right Louis and quarterback steps for the first half handed Patrick Callen the quarterback of UCLA is a toe to toe with Brady Quinn in fact it might say he's that played in two touchdown passes to one and the rating higher than Brady Quinn second career start for the sophomore Cowen he was almost he was in a real battle for the starting position in training camp animals and ultimately one of the pet family it was a very very late decision by Calder out cuz cuz Calvin deserved a shot he also talked about how the UCLA defense had cut off the the wide receivers but they've also done a job on Darius Walker who had been so potent the last few yeah he's only average you know two point three yards a carries weight at 33 yards the first set does not have a reception but a first half for guys cell range 21st 21st years off not off to a good start and [Applause] shut down [Music] and coach charlie weis talking about the big plays for the UCLA offense as they do something they haven't done most of the season that stretched the field well you know they only had and had to scoring players of 35 yards in his first half remember coming in today's game they only had two completions of greater than 24 yards on the entire season so a much better and more explosive first half for the bonus this opening drive of the third quarter always so important let's see how it plays out here as the Bruins take over at their own white team my pulse on the tight-end you know on the road against Notre Dame who's been particularly good in the third quarter opening drive the second half you just create drop balls like this perfect roll again by Pat Cowen to a guy Luthan Paulson who's been a pretty reliable receiver the Irish being so good in this third quarter outscoring their opponents significantly 45 to 15 in 17 no in the last two games in early it's to talk to that part on adjustments the total wife's and staff have been able to do that this season handoff de marquise the tale by thrown back Travis Thomas heart state on the first down I want maybe the $35 40 or nine they can they're faced with the third in probably twelve that I deep in their own territory so a dangerous the situation right now for Pat Kelly Travis Thomas number 26 coming off the corner just chasing former a running back put him on defense for his steed you saw it right there now this is a significant play right now for Pat Calot all right know the score you know the situation on 3rd 12th my Paulson legitimate of course or talents setting up a little screen didn't get much Evert made the reception but immediately Travis Thomas is there along with Derrick Landry and others too good slightly plays in a row by number 26 Travis Thomas names I'm chase to be honey who else is there Derek Landry Altair is well more than 30 Derek Landry playing defense attack stop tackle stopping the screen in punt formation and West is deep for Notre Dame low kick taken by the up man Samardzija formation the Charlie Weis put in this week for UCLA snores you up and West deep but was only 32 Samar's you got three yards on the return and Notre Dame ready for its first possession of the second half [Music] [Applause] Notre Dame Stadium about 4:45 Eastern Time the aerial coverage brought to you by Goodyear tires featuring triple tread technology with three separate tread zones for peace of mind in any weather beautiful aerial shot at Brady Quinn four of eleven then on that last drive was seven of eight but had to settle for the field goal now the Irish swiffer offense on the field for the first time here in the second half beginning with excellent field position their own 47 yard line [Applause] leave it up front Kevin Brown and freakin Harwell of UCLA Big Bob Morton the Notre Dame all moving first and five so UCLA offside five yards if home against the Bruins making it first and five and Darius Walker's celebrating I should say this 21st birthday may be a misnomer celebrating when you hit this kind of day how about no reception he came in leading the team in receptions with 38 marius and his mother liver and sharing the same birthday a subdued celebration unless things turn around maybe they do [Applause] Walker races for a first down to the 40-yard line where he's tackled by Chris Horton we always give it to mr. dependable Darius Walker following a good block by Sam Young afraid another one of those delayed patterns let him read it and feel it and see it the great eyes the vision and then just kind of ceases he picks up the first down [Applause] [Music] the middle line let's pound man chase unloaded caught by an equipment man on the UCLA sideline 11 count does it count Brown was bearing down on Brady Quinn once again good pressure by this you know front four they haven't had a blitz a lot although I think it was the late blitz here by Richie Carter and Christian Taylor but you know Hickman and Davis and Brown and Harlem done a pretty good job themselves excellent the coach an assistant coach yet still has his skills making it second down in ten [Applause] five wide receiver set we saw in the friend of the first half and key back to that went under center [Applause] the Samardzija legends by Dennis keys well you know when you do this you had the five wide receiver one two three four five up here you know they just forces the defense defend not on the entire vertical but the horizontal and part of the field as well and you know generally when you have an empty bag to defend it's going to be a quick throw indeed it was a quick throw to Samardzija to pick up five down to five yards and then eight five more third down and five again the empty backfield five wide look but this time twins in the shotgun [Applause] Wow back with Christian Taylor Taylor taking the tight end and up to the coverage of in John Carlson well you know from Salinas California Christa tuned and said he met with him on Wednesday in Penn Tom he was ready to play right then right the middle of your screen perfect coverage with his left hand knocks the ball away Brady Quinn had plenty of time looking for his tight end transfer from Air Force and then walked on to Silla 4005 your name is converted all three fire four pound attempts today pop quick tick by Brady Quinn but it's right to the endzone on the hops will come out to the 20 trying to catch UCLA unawares and pride a down at deep button winless the surprise play reaches the end zone I haven't seen that two years probably ought to keep his day job 14:10 game and even 12 minutes left as UCLA takes them all for the second time in this third quarter [Music] [Applause] with it is he once he got that hit of steam he just kept on rolling and made a pretty nice first down gain miss Travis Thomas had the full-back Petrie covered he was trying to get as the run little bro up throw the ball back number 32 tea tree in the flat watch Travis Thomas cut that off then tea tree just kind of gets in front of them yeah just screening human yeah enabling his quarterback to get nine yards a real nice first down play they've been pretty methodical at times to they'd hit the two big pass play don't land it kind of marched from the follicle controlling the ball the clock a little bit alive Notre Dame likes to do dance opponents 131 yards through the air for calendar drop it I think Cal got back on it no [Applause] look like he had fallen on comes up with it for known a sudden change defense now for UCLA and for Notre Dame an opportunity again ball came out very quickly on the exchange from chai the center this never had a handle on at that point I thought that he had recovered it but it might have got his hand stepped on to which you're right Trevor laws just kind of muscled it out of there so after the turn over Notre Dame gets it at the UCLA 28 yard line by formation McConnell fullback Walker's the tailback Samardzija motion back to parents in oppression ducks under the and then switch to the outside and out of bounds at the 25 yard line just short of the 25 well you know there's good pass rush on uh net on Brady Quinn but there must be some good pass coverage down the field Tom because he had some time there's a ton a few times nothing open Quinn was not gonna force it let's take a look at some of this coverage here [Applause] [Music] under the rest takes up about two yard the good pass rush combined with the coverage horse that one second down play [Applause] Nebraska Lincoln today walkers on the draw Texas kicked a few go I think about 20 seconds let off by you to be for Esther Chris Horton made the last stop for UCLA as they continue to hold Walker in check your Chris worked was listed as a strong safety well he plays a lot like a linebacker getting one of the many defensive players who have thrived under doing Walker's new aggressive defensive system Walker only averaging two and a half yards a carry on the season he's averaged nearly four hat Kenneth Lombardi coming across in know Bob Morton groomy on so we'll see it's several of those did they have yeah three of them false start this finally let's go down it was Bob Morton and I must say we have had three of them and they've been very unpredictable than how their good little move there but Morton got his hands on Lombard Benedict John Havlicek their defensive lineman plays like a sixth man they're the fifth defensive lineman kind of fills in a tackle in at end from Los Angeles and had a fumble recovery for a TD earlier at the Irish two of eleven on third down today largely because have been in a lot of these third and 10 through 12 it approached three wide receivers to the load Karlsson and Moshe resets [Applause] rocked by Walker [Music] pretty well-covered then time by Dennis keys but Walker couldn't hold on and it's fourth down Nicole Joya comes in so field goal attempt upcoming for Notre Dame after they recovered the UCLA football deep in Bruin territory and once again we're gonna settle for a field goal attempt joy is longest this season has been 35 this one a 48 yard attempt Samara holds Joya made the 21 yarder this 148 yards [Applause] and never even close no gimmicks on UCLA dodges the turnover they fumbled the ball Notre Dame unable to convert it remains 1410 Bruins golden dome with the administration building on the campus of the University of Notre Dame with a home team trailing at the moment now it's time for our Liberty Mutual legends of the game Paul Hornung the golden boy outstanding all-around athlete playing quarterback halfback fullback and safety and remains the only player from a losing team to ever win the Heisman Trophy his team was to date in 1956 as a senior he ranks second nationally in total offense accounted for more than half of the Irish scoring and has remained active in the Notre Dame community donating over five hundred thousand dollars to the school and dowing scholarships Paul Hornung the golden boy R of the game there's the Heisenberg with Johnny majors the single wing tailback at Tennessee finishing sound never saw Jim Brown from Syracuse in some great names on that list of the Paul Hornung topped them all went on a horse to the Green Bay Packers and was here focused the [Applause] monkey stood up by truck blanket and driven by cy-kill Brockington in you know deserve to start charlie weis saying and you know this is a meritocracy around Harry if you deserve to play you do play brockington filled in for Travis Thomas in their last game played well she said I'm not gonna sit him I'm going to start both of them this week nice play there by Joe Brockington brockington getting better and better and earning the starting nod today as he had in the absence of Travis Thomas who was injured week before picked up by UCLA Cowell escape she throws it away good job by Patrick Talon good blame you no good picked up by Chris Marquis of the Blitz Lake Richardson and I take Pat Cowan actually kind of rolled right into that blitz watch the reverti committee picked up the Cowen spins out of it ultimately and then there's a smart thing of a saving of what about a 10 yard loss outside the the tight end box the tackle box and reaching the line of scrimmage with the pass that is not grounding it's a smart guy [Applause] big-big anytime time out play clock was already down to two so UCLA is forced to spend its first time out of the second half it comes with 905 remaining in the third quarter Carl Darrell and his young quarterback Patrick Allen getting only a second career start here's what his coach said about Howard he has a strong arm he has a quick release he's got great size he's can move he's very athletic and he has all of those kind of qualities that I know in our offensive system you want your quarterback to have you have to be able to think quickly on you know on your feet you got to be able to get the ball out fast you got to be able to move and make people miss and and he's able to do those things and he's done he's done a nice job so far Dominique mine end up being one of those guys that recruiters miss you know they miss you you wouldn't even the most highly recruited Cowan in his family brother Joe was brother Joe a wide receiver at UCLA and the high school coach of Patrick Callan said you better take a look at this guy and the UCLA coach is dead his dad was a quarterback at the University of Washington and at st. John Bosco high school the coach said you better take a look at this quarterback Patrick talented in the second career start he is leading Notre Dame in the third quarter at Notre Dame Stadium pretty impressive you know and he's a meat and potatoes kind of guy hangs out with his teammates then a Chardonnay and green and a quarter baggage again at some in our booth might have been happy how the chard and breed guys promise but you know his players like they play harder for him [Music] [Applause] and as you heard his coach say strongarm he'll need it on her down chin he's been quiet most of his game stands in the pocket reserved juggles and drops the pass behind the crossing route which they hope to get man-to-man defense it looked like they did within Duke you to the new play trailing him but the ball thrown just a little bit behind Brazil catchable but behind who wouldn't picked up the first Democrat in front maybe he runs for the first down Perez will punt again George West is deep and Samar's to the up man Casey hits a short one as he did his last attempt we'll be west 22 get immediately got away from that first man but not the second way immediate er return after the putt sailed 48 845 left in the third quit and company back to the field [Music] 14:10 the count Ben Olsen the injured UCLA quarterback trying to keep his team's offense in the game with that slim four-point lead and Notre Dame taking over at the Irish 25-yard line [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] drop pass low Samarra that had big play written all over it for this he catches that he has a long way to run going cross grain upstream like a salmon he is the man in motion Samara watch all the you know the green turf in front of him Tom if he catches [Applause] she takes it close to the 35-yard just short of the first down another short tackle by Carter and van they bring him hard well a defensive tackle actually dropped off in Cochrane's trying to cover Darius Walker first catch from Walker zone blitz Technium but you know the McKnight only has twenty eight yards samara although he caught a touchdown only seven yards and receptions on three catches so this defensive backfield together with the pass rush of UCLA has really shut down these these wide receivers pretty well not much offense on the either end of the field today and here's another third down this will no third in short [Music] [Applause] Chris won't enforce to tackling for a safety spot and said to two of the block to springing you know Tommy I think you have to really stay patient with the running game nice little dance there by Darius Walker but you know Charlie Weis is the kind of guy it's gonna be patient patient patient and keep feeding the ball to Darius Walker and sooner or later he's gonna make a play his mom Laverne celebrating a birthday today as well as her son he's 21 but he would tell us how old Laverne is wisely yes play again Darius Walker gets to Cal gets a pretty good game on first down Hickman the tackle and Walker with birthday wishes to his mom happy birthday miles you know I love you I appreciate everything she is in the stands and hoping for a reversal of the current score was seven minutes left in the third second down play [Applause] caught there by David Grimm then crimes I should say for a first down and front of murder yeah David Grimes thievery the third flight received a great protection for Brady Quinn and it well delivered boy to be be crimes Dana 13 yards on that play and our first down line today brought to you by Xerox a lot of first downs been brought to the the Irish by Darius Walker this year by action faith and Brady Quinn's going to shout [Applause] [Music] by Denis keys it goes for 22 ok first big catch really you know how to yard touchdown catch the first big open field play by the all-american Jeff Samardzija Brady Quinn gonna hops up in the pocket bird with bunny steps and then a good open field tackle by Denis keys or Samaras gone for a touch ball at the 19 at UCLA and the officials will stop the clock with a Bruin timeout so UCLA takes its second timeout of this second half only one left for Carter Allen his team but they lead it 1410 Notre Dame knocking on the door two of the top three receivers all-time at Notre Dame on the field but Knights number five in number five beautiful member number two on the list and Samaras who just passed for that last reception Jim Seymour to take over third place in the all-time Irish list [Applause] [Applause] is Walker [Music] before Eric McNeil in Sandusky and near the end of today's game will select the Chevrolet players of the game from each team to honor their determination in outstanding place during the $1,000 contribution to each university's general scholarship fund Chevy and American Revolution Tom just a preview I think for UCLA it will be a defensive player don't you think yep the way they play it has been outstanding here's Prince joining Walker in the back of a second down now Walker in motion change that was Justin Heckman again is second sack of the game give him nine and they were trying to get me near Prince number 25 right there on a wheel route against a linebacker but Hickman saved what may have been a touchdown sag knowing not only the lost yardage but maybe saved six points [Applause] where they just keep inlet with last three seasons of Justin Hickman had a good year in 2005 Twitter just been sensational this year look at the tackles for losses as well those are different numbers different stat as statistics to today five wide reciever formation third and long and I said that today [Applause] turning close to the five yard with kreplach their life it goes for sixteen and then applied a just a hoss to bring down Jeff Samardzija this will say you know it just kind of stays alive [Applause] to the kids the orange after the catch and it's going to come back a hold against the Irish offense number 74 10-yard penalty replay third down Sam Young well I'd say I haven't - name them home for some of these guys number 74 because they are really coming hard number 17 they were double-teaming Justin Hickman which is probably a pretty good idea to do Tom oh yeah name one of those guys held them they called it on Sam Young the UCLA's defense is going to keep them in most football games they play like this rest away you know they have a stretch of playing three top 20 teams in a month they'll Oregon last week Notre Dame now and Cal in a couple weeks and they play Washington State next week and then they'll go to Berkeley to face Cal 23 [Applause] when has open grimes just setting down a punt of the defense and burner makes the catch for 17 yards now ordinarily you'd say hey go kick the field goal right but you just never know if Charlie Weis good pass protection always bound David Grimes is kind of a deep come back we'll make it a good tackle again by Ferno forces of fourth and six it looks like the Irish are gonna go for Darius Walker returns to the game four thousand six no no Tom I think you get a lot of game with I gave a finger myself honey wife's gonna roll that I was here they previous four thousands in this game his fourth and six Quinn swing past walk tonight inside the five David line [Applause] attempts today and there is one who said when I saw the multi threat as a runner and then as a receiver and matched at that time with Lombard you know they had at one of those safety blitzes so a defensive lineman's matched up with the linebacker so a good scouting good execution good play ball gets the first down Charlie Weis rolls the dice and it comes up seven he goes to Vegas I want to go with them first and goal at the five [Applause] what [Applause] at that time by Taylor and keys Kristin Taylor once again the middle linebacker for UCLA make it a nice stop as did this the free safety keys next like look like Darius Walker had something out here in front of him I'm finally a good tag open field tackle by Dennis Keyes couple of those today the Bruins after missing 30-plus last week against Oregon this [Music] Quinn has started this half hitting only one of his first five pass attempts his five five since and convert a second Bruce Davis good coverage downfield Deniz Keys had some Marja well covered and Troy brown had McKnight covered and Brady Quinn just had to hold the ball balls up a Buddha this is the other defensive end really spots two blockers warning young and then the coverage downfield so here's the two guys they're just covered nowhere to go fourth sack for the day for the UCLA defense in Charlie Weis now has to call a third [Applause] Samardzija unable to get it well defended by prey Brown and Denis Denis keys tray brown and on bump and go a slant and go to Jeff Samardzija terrific coverage by Trey crown just kind of ransom Marshall right out of the end zone and then screen larger from the football we've got his head turned to the wood club coal pass interference 33 yard attempt Brady Quinn disappointed in that outcome as the unit comes on 33 yard attempt Joya [Applause] and Carl Joya kicks it dead center right down Broadway it's good to make it a one-point game once again Notre Dame has to settle for three run up Charlie Weis is pet peeves not getting touchdowns and settling for field goals in the red zone aerial coverage today brought to you by that your tires featuring triple tread technology with three separate red zones the peace of mind in any weather speaking to the weather it's turning cool here late afternoon at Notre Dame as the clouds roll in and Brady Quinn exceeded ten thousand yards passing today to join 31 others and a pretty elite group as you see the names scroll by something made him go by remember him you on this list I'm going to kill it all my practice yard kiss Ben Roethlisberger MATLAB [Music] Doug Flutie here's a good name over ten down but it's going to be very sweet unless they can pull out the win where carts kick off taken by the game [Applause] to the sideline and again going one on one of the open field leo karai makes a nice tackle and so Kat Cowan back on the field for the UCLA offense they have not scored in this third quarter with a minute 38 left well you know and for quarterbacks that you're tested every week Tomba least amount of tournaments they're making to make sure that they don't know enough about you and pressure situations only a one-point up third quarter coming to a close needs to mount a nice Drive not a good start Archy swamped by the defense Brockington number 52 down there on his back was the first man to hit him and again Trevor laws and Derrick Landry get tough to run inside on those tackles everlaw's high school wrestler and Jared Landry both guys inside that leverage 145 and 5 as a high school wrestler Michael Petrie the Bruin fullback injured on the play he's had a great year for them to three-year starter his best season times you just noticed FedEx much time but boy even who leads the way with made honorable mention all partying last season in Anaheim saw his hometown was a linebacker and a fullback there he also played basketball limping to the Bruins sideline tomorrow only five races to go and the chase for the Nextel Cup get ready for NASCAR's demolition derby is all the stars behind in Martinsville NASCAR's tightest track anything can happen that's the subway 500 tomorrow 12:30 Eastern 9:30 Pacific here on NBC the false start against the ruins it'll be on Paulson started the quarter with address me ended with the penalty rates not good off at 5-yard penalty still second down the cold around his Bruins though have survived what you know notre dame's to general charges the opening of the game they survived it by playing good defense in the third quarter they survived Notre Dame which is leaked out played and outscored its opponents this year in the third quarter this is the fourth possession this quarter for use Blaise gave just 12 yards two parts in a turnover a whole second and 15 [Music] at the 40 yard line by hybrids and it will be 16 yards and a first down for UCLA on the big conversion for throwing like I mean he just kind of wound off and absolutely drill first one to Marcus ever again with some people in his face could route by Marcus ever kind of coming back to the ball to his quarterback had a good target to him 30 seconds left [Applause] here's power and through that enough for grads but nobody can grab it as it sails out about Brazil and Lambert for Richardson it was running the football one out of islands you know I think bad Cowen does a smart thing here too you know if your guys knock again not gonna catch him make sure they don't good coverage by Mike Richardson who you know quiet Lee's had a really solid season see Irish Mike Richardson as a tackler primarily the boundary corner configure book to him his family sent his mama a retired lieutenant colonel in the Air Force has spent 21 years fearful that's this Gavin Ketchum Gavan caption second reception of the season Maurice crime had the coverage 15 yard the gym Simona the offensive coordinator it's called an aggressive game Bradley the most aggressive play call in UCLA has had all year and this guy is delivering on those aggressive play calls throws down the middle and that pass by talent will bring the third quarter to a close so Bota call in a good game today for the Bruins who lead it as we come to the end of the third quarter at the end of three one-point game UCLA 14 913 NBC station today's game brought to you by Sirius satellite radio there is Brady Quinn looking pump fakes he rolls to the near side throws it it's caught by Somoza inside the 20 inside the 10 he's going in the funny thing about that video though if you watch it after Jeff scored his touchdown the first person to greet Jeff was a good friend of mine by the name of Pat Koontz Pat Koontz is a defensive tackle mines and he was the first guy on the field to greet him back on the campus of the University of Notre Dame a one-point game as we start the fourth quarter the playing of Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture signaling the end of the 3rd and start of the 4th today's game UCLA in the brought to you by Sirius satellite radio first play of the fourth quarter first day on UCLA chase from the pocket that finds his man its Moline with the reception yes Carl Darrell coach his alma mater I'm proud to be back I'm happy to represent this school I went to I play for we want a lot of championships with and that's my goal is to get our program back to where it should be and this would be a signature victory if they can pull it out here in South Bend they have only a one they have not fared well under Doral against ranked teams kaolin kind of short arm that one justices receiver fell down intended for Moline again I ask you defended rally you know is maybe the quietest ten win season in the country last year Maine ten wins including a very impressive bowl win in the Sun Bowl against Northwestern see Moline - who is going to be open maybe pick up the first down there who's hurt so you have a fresh now on the whoops perfectly time play by Maurice Trump Maurice Crump were it up the middle number 40 again he absolutely got a jump on the snap count the center chai goes to his left in a league of freeway right into Peck Cowan's face Samara is going as Perez on 4th bound putz Samar Joey let it go it reaches the end zone now the big site of ivory soprano jr. on some third down forces the puffed and 1409 just underway fourth-quarter notre-dame takes over down one [Music] [Applause] the defense ball game near UCLA holding on one point lead over Notre Dame just underway in the fourth quarters the Irish take the ball at their own 20 [Applause] underneath Walker gets free Bruin defenders he's taken down as the last man our first man hitting was Christian Taylor along with trade brown shirt the Lewis pay top Notre Dame offensive line coach John Latino read his guys the riot act after their missed opportunity in the red zone masters out in the field he told him that we can't go out there roll the dice and get first downs off fourth down plays and then allowed Brady coin to take the sack he said you got to stay conscientious about containment as those UCLA defensive end tried to get the pressure off the edge top right goes to the turns to make the catch to pick up a little bit four yards on the play [Applause] the Irish first down the UCLA defensive ends have been eating up a lot of Texas the first half of the season Justin Notre Dame Hickman and Davis here's the hurry up look again from the Irish stage use this at the end of the first half to have their best drive over 70 yards though it ended in only a field goal they go out of the backfield the Walker and he's Mastan taken for a loss on the play by Bruce Stade Walker Bruce Davis isn't you know pretty good story he almost left you seal I actually went into coral Darrell's office said hey coach I'm transferring some of his teammates ended up talked him into staying and then Dewayne walk of the defensive coordinator comes and changes his position from linebacker to a defensive end and said hey just go chase boy he's done that this season his dad played at UCLA and in the [Applause] [Music] pressure on Brady Quinn how many times you said that tongue pressure on Brady Clinton that time Kevin Brown and Justin Hickman was also in pursuit Hickman there Brown at the end knocked down just about all ten hits eight knockdowns and how about the for sex ready Quintus kick hits keeps hitting up and keeps keeps truck 14 when his passport two yards today that is spent the UCLA [Applause] it's on that's a three man pants room three guys rush five guys walking and Hickman still gets there yikes fifth sack of the day for the UCLA defense and three of them for Justin Hicks there is unity see just two ends in one knows Tech he collapsed the pocket [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so cut formation for Jeff price [Applause] Graeme's runs up on it fields into Capaldi crazy the nice return [Music] kristinia return the pup covered 35 but 15 on the return and then a fly rag down over the far sideline it'll be a personal foul against the Bruins at a critical now for the Bruins they were on the half of the ball you know almost ingest the ball good luck first little foul number 11 of the return team 15-yard penalty from the end of the run first down UCLA and his keys the personal foul left part of the screen here his only push yeah that was not smart it costs the Bruins Michael Petrie the [Music] the bones take over PT the full-back in the I mark a the pal broken up that was krumin coverage the linebacker deflected the pass incomplete it's always seen from Maurice from the lastest series one was a blitz sack Pat Cowan on a big third down play this time terrific coverage by Mary's from covering the tight end Paulson and backs it away Bruce prompt could really move place their middle linebacker position only 222 very good down sheep it's been our junior tailor written down by a new playin Lambert but not until he scampered for 23 yards Jim Swoboda the offensive quarters saying where we were waiting to have a breakout game in the passing game today it has been into.the groans third baby tax play for the birds they had two root two wide receivers on the left side on the right side is junior Taylor is an easy slant route easy completion for UCLA [Applause] 36 yard line of the Irish third reception of the day for junior Taylor he was a big one and UCLA is dry Landry after a bmary slowed him down in a happier Mary with the help and then Landry finishes him off loss of eight fat cows but he will shake a few of these off to watch victory and then I try to block him right around the corner he shook him but could not shake dear Atlanta so the one-two punches every American Landry gets a second second sack for the Irish makes it second at 18 [Music] and it's incomplete good timing on the Blitz by Tommy zippy Kowski [Applause] [Music] number nine from the top of the screen around Sutherland just too quick for right the edge Carolyn has no chance to step in Irish defensive coordinator Rick Miller turning up the heat on Patrick Callen maybe the 35-yard line to get their field goal kicker in range kaolin hangs it up intended for junior tailor madrasah flag on Lambert's now a couple of things can happen when you throw it up Tommy or see if we can go up make a catch or you could throw it up hope for a pass interference and that's what UCLA gets there Terrell Lambert who's played brilliantly the last couple of weeks gets called for the pass interference penalty [Applause] he had his hip turn quite honestly and generally they're not going to call those red hairy parrots defense number 20 15-yard penalty from the previous spot automatic first out it looks to me like the two upper hand there was maybe just incidental it was eat equal way and then he I guess he had a whole so first down 20 Archy trapped bylaws how about the game triple loss is had inside then you always talk about defensive backs and safeties and defensive ends and such but the interior guys are really responsible for shutting off the inside the inside runs in Trevor laws Derrick Landry have done it today you know UCLA has to manage this situation they're already [Music] range is a field goal kicker generally right just can't afford another SATCOM let's see if Notre Dame here comes the Blitz the release entices receiver Brazil in his second career start how well is Pat Gallen play boy you know he knew it knew the Blitz was coming new who's going to take a shot and when you back out you're generally gonna throw the ball to your left to the lake shout thereby times in Bukowski he's back rather than get away from the rush but his strong arm in a 6'5 height evil these six - idly he gets rid of them they fan out his [Applause] [Music] oops we may have to use this last time and just did and he uses last time out of the game who thought the play was late coming in only one second on the play clock so they spend their final timeout of the half Kozma but UCLA and threatning already up one [Music] [Applause] this will be a signature win my wife's in the average [Music] national championship and even a BCS bowl a lot against UCLA raising up out of his stance noah sutherland dead ball false start number 74 all past five-yard penalty filtered down well tom you know going into the loudest part of the stadium right into the student section remember a quarterback we struggled with his voice all week by noon [Applause] they pick it up and Palin is receiver in the 10-yard line it's Marcus Everett it's a gain of 16 and a UCLA first down as a good blitz pickup by the Bruins a loud Pat Cowen to find Marcus Emma [Music] [Applause] but he'd get that only protection in the police didn't have a cheese - Stefan deliver and boy did first in ten [Music] [Applause] for the end zone oh I thought that Brazil was held when that one goes incomplete and you know they they felt cold gorillas say it was yesterday he felt they had to be more aggressive with their quake balls inside the 20 and this was one of them [Music] Mike Richardson grabbed and gun away [Applause] [Music] back to the ten yard line before Carmen and du Quai took him down and did way lost his helmet in the process big third down action for both of these teams but I like pack down outside the pocket against Arizona in particular he was awfully good really even though he's on the move [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] quake came to finish him off pointing fish muraki's lucky have held on to the ball so another day in defense stiffens and forces a field goal try after this play what Brockington first slows him down the hip Richards in then in do play three blue jerseys here's Medlock had a string of 14 earlier today this one covers 29 yards [Applause] and money Dustin Medlock dead center but UCLA UCLA fi4 here watching Notre Dame football presented by Sirius satellite radio don't forget once today's game ends visit NBC sports.com for the live bodies Notre Dame postgame report you can hear Charlie Weis at his press conference discussed today's game the rail as well that's all coming up on the bun age Notre Dame postgame reports at NBC Sports calm Medlock ready to kick it off to Weston Grimes a thrilling finish here a 719 left and a four-point game the field goal to put the Bruins up by four is he kicked the ball off particularly well as good at a field goal kicker yes there's an opportunity for a Notre Dame return here actually the the last couple of kickoffs have reached the end zone one in two yards deep and Grimes is elected to come out and have to pay the twentieth the time this one is deep very deep we'll take a knee bribes and so facing a defense that has been stout today what they have done they've stuffed the run turnovers by Taylor as a middle linebacker I think this is where the freest himself getting ready Quinn's face and sack that's one of five sacks on Brady Quinn and as the guys believe Malloy when that defense lines up now at the Notre Dame 20 where the Irish takeover trailing by four [Applause] [Music] taste again he had a lot of time the coverage was gonna couldn't find any money he's going to and then Moline nearly was on him so chase will lead right over Ryan Harris Brown Santucci then through Harris chase playing one of three moline's with a whole bunch of Molina the throwing tape oh gee [Applause] and cuts down right here for the Irish to stay alive some are short of the first down it's gonna bring up third like Taylor and Charlie was just keeps calm once and he gets his place and so quickly you never see the quarterback have to use or burn a timeout because it didn't have enough time of the clock no huddle [Applause] in complete his defensive play that time made by van Rodney's van on McKnight and another hit on Brady Quinn and here comes the punt team I'm gonna leave it up to Notre Dame's defense Charlie Weiss's remember that a fake punt against what was at Penn State for 43 yards the dangers here though wouldn't it no absolutely yeah yeah you put it away and hopefully you play good defense [Music] [Applause] and SP is the deep man price these balls for haircuts Thank You matron at the 27-yard line so the ire is going to call their defense against Cowen and the Bruin offense hoping to play a little field position here get the best of it the clock starting to become a factor now showing 6:05 and Tom what's a tendency you kind of go into a shell here right jinsol boat is called a very aggressive game today for Pat cow and he's delivered for the most part [Music] the effort in the middle marki got a yard Maurice crumb collapsed him Marquis rock rolls Jordan live minutes Matt Galen you know the 25 second clock just underway should snap it with it with about two seconds left try to eat as much clock as he possibly can [Applause] p3 and malloon [Applause] and his drill but exhibit house before looked like he had a little seating there too for a moment a noisy Mycoskie knocked in flat and that scene was closed by number 9 I Bukowski number 9 his cup - stop Mike Richardson get a piece of it as well venez [Music] [Applause] I have no timeouts in absolute confusion right now play Bach attend no timeouts one two snapper covers and frozen compare [Applause] that was not a clean play no from the guinea Dan from the play call into the catch by Everett and we really just did a kind of a an opportunity slip through their hands to try to use a lot of clock so they go three and out shouldn't snap this ball 20 seconds left on the play clock waiting to snap George West will return putz he was an excellent punt returner kick returner in high school Perez sends it his way fair catch called and taken at the 27 yard line where the Irish offense and Brady Quinn well Brady Quinn the all-time leading passer in Notre Dame history hoping for one of those comebacks for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this is the situation in which legends are made and Brady Quinn was broken so many records who today passed 10,000 yards career passing only the thirty-second quarterback in football history to have done it in major college football and here he is now with the game all the line starting from his own 20 [Applause] in Spanish pop gasa margin kind of dance away for Stefano today and Gill of 16 has the feeling of the Michigan State game tonight Tom they just give Notre Dame too many chances sooner or later Brady Floyd is gonna make it better no huddle offense I think though uses that consider this their last series we may use it for dance they happen the sideline stop the clock 22 you know you play around the first three forged on but as you said hey the fourth quarter when it really counts look at Brady Quinn's numbers the fourth quarter this season five touchdowns in just the 100 400 yards that's what he's looking for on this Drive [Music] [Applause] in the slot to the top of the screen that did not get the first did not get the first down and poss continues to roll chase moline main principle for UCLA [Applause] David Grimes a career-high six coaches today you're gonna need somebody to make a clutch play here third down and one less than three minutes to flow [Applause] [Music] we'll stop momentarily to reset the chain yeah yeah look for a clutch play maybe give it to the quarterback already put in touch for a proper two and a half years 44 yard-line UCLA Charlie Weis and the Irish trying to rounded down by four o'clock chose 248 fires all on their feet watching what would be the game deciding drive-bys rid of it just intended for Walker and just narrowly avoided another sack boy he is he's going to be in the Whirlpool for Monday Tuesday and Wednesday these kind of games that are bad for traffic time now everybody stays to the very very end now about Bruce Davis again yep in Harwell from the inside [Applause] and defense is pretty well shredded the Notre Dame offensive line 237 on the clock [Applause] the touch massive stroke like Carlson you see what have sweets to the wide receivers that time John Carlson a tight end split out kind of in a slot they tried to throw the slant Hitler like he wasn't quite ready for third down and ten [Applause] last time the three man rusty had a sack unless again finding name's after making the catch short of the first down to a yard shave the first while he had room to get the first two doesn't know where that we've gotten over the marker is giving yourself enough room to come back for the football still have the first ner at all four of their previous fourth down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] have been stopped they went to the well once too often man UCLA was ready for chase moline came in late and I think he was a part of that stop and as was Christian Taylor the middle linebacker Moline and Taylor ball clearly shorts promise they will measure anyway this is what a BCS bowl of measurement traps yep what a victory would be for the young Bruins remember Notre Dame still has all three of their timeouts and in short UCLA takes over a few first downs again motor main all three time house can use it stop the clock but if you see a gets too conservative Moline and first time Brady quinidine stops on a fourth quarter fourth-down sneak when they just used a fortune all right I'm gonna start the clock the mother named mr. first time out changing possession the would have started another day Fatboy this this motor date of this UCLA run defense Notre Dame has run 35 times for 41 yards time Tom the same guys that were 116th last year in run defense [Music] if the coaches can get it turned around charlie weis done it here Carl Darrell with 10 wins last year and then a new defensive coordinators changed the attitude well what hangs in the balance for Notre Dame any remote chance they might have had of playing for the national championship and a BCS bowl right now they're in the eighth spot in the BCS standings which skerin tease them a BCS bowl burg but a loss today the UCLA will drop them way down and probably end any chance they have of playing in a BCS bowl I mean stranger things have happened but indeed the flip it over here Pat Cowen here's a quarterback in the huddle now you're saying hey guys stay in bounds secure the ball love to pick up a first down but just make sure you secure the ball and stay inbounds and force Notre Dame to use one of the two remaining timeouts Carl girl looking for a signature win [Music] [Applause] whether guys at the register the football down there for 35 yard line right at the line of scrimmage by Mike Richardson timeout Notre Dame you see all 11 blue jerseys crowding the line of scrimmage so the Irish take their second timeout they'll have one left get a look at that look look at all these guys excuse me all 11 there you go that notebook and random numbers but all loving guys right up at their line scrimmage I mean if you want to take a shot that's the time to do it my telestrator when he was up to mine just no notes Brady Quinn all he can do is watch at this point same for Charlie Weis well it was 1974 UCLA had 188 straight basketball games the record they came to South Bend and the Irish pulled off the upset beating the UCLA Bruins Bill Walton but today the Bruins could likely turn the tables on the Irish if they can hold on for the final 2:15 look at why not get that can't win a chance on a little role to his right balls in the left hash he's a right-handed quarterback he's a good runner you know maybe it hit the full-back of the flat of his open otherwise Pat Kalin run stays in bounds [Applause] and marques spilled horses Notre Dame to use its final timeout Civic Council made the tackle so the final timeout in the books now timeout remaining UCLA leading by four in the clock show two minutes and nine seconds Jim Simona as we said aggressive play calling today I think they need to narrow it out here again just can't give me their name another opportunity right because ever has had a nice day for the bro six catches are hard to yards and touchdown [Music] the right of the screen their offensive line coach caught two colonists they talked to his team what a nice return to Notre Dame Stadium of Biafra Jim Collett oh he played here at Notre Dame Stadium for the UCLA Bruins as a fullback linebacker back in 1964 the last time these two teams met and philatelist yesterday then I was running for a touchdown down that sideline right over there when Allen Paige knocked me out of bounds now on page in 1964 knocked a lot of guys out of Bounce as Jim kettle coached here at Notre Dame throughout the years also hit budget Purdue assistant head coach now [Music] [Applause] Marquis nowhere to go written down just Travis Thomas met him in the back field and so did Derrick Landry I don't like to call just you know they give another name another chance [Applause] they still have nots now they're marking the ball ready for play the play clock starts and Travis Thomas there to sniff that play out we're dealin hoping for another chance the freshman George West back to receive the punt by Perez [Applause] in the play clock running down they're gonna call it use them take the penalty five yards delay of game penalty but they run the play clock down or the game clock down to 121 it's a good use of five yards I think [Applause] and West has a bead on it [Applause] dancing across the 35 to the 37 yard line Irish quickly out on the field we're penally down here and then hallway back halfway away back upfield flag is down they read his lips I thought he said holding [Applause] [Music] [Applause] coach wise saying that way you pointed the wrong way you talking the defensive captain for UCLA it's Darrell saying no you had it rough II didn't say an A in the first down just like they're giving a UCLA the option on well still no signal of what the penalty might be number 60 of the return team ten-yard penalty from the previous spot replay fourth down not at first now they'll have to punt again AC Cullen she's dead for the whole did that interesting though the remember they took the five yard penalty hit and I think this is right handling that would have give them them first it did enable them to burn some more clock which is down to 110 [Applause] for Arizona hi snap the last attempt he was able to pull down Wes hopes for tenants return for pumps in high school for touchdowns that was just a year ago when he was a high school player gets this now and this is a towering boom over the head and into the end zone over the head of West into the end zone for a touchback so it all falls on the shoulders of great Quinn he does get one more chance try to pull it out for the iron in no time we were talking to Darius Walker yesterday about Brady Quinn in situations like this he says he has such command of the huddle you look at his eyes and you think things are going to be alright never names offense today so productive at times they've had 13 possessions and scored only 13 points they need witness a little bit we had our timeouts left there at the end of the game after they stopped this can afford that we did a good job utilizing those timeouts but then players made of players Jeff takes it to the house I mean we're just very fortunate to get out of here with a win today everybody that's not in this state and described what this mean what this experience is like as a little game coach to pull off the last second one like this well so I went to Quinn before this guy said we got one any kid and he goes so kudos to Quinn and the receivers were almost sent out today they didn't play very well then how does so Martha come up with that take me through the sequence of plays there at the end well it's a little different mentality there at the end of the game when there's no timeouts left you're getting into you know more of a I'm not saying pre-med but a little different coverage scheme give credit to use to lengthen the they really did a nice job in coverage years and finally do you think the season may have been saved here because you were on the verge of maybe losing a lot that's a second time that's happened this year that happened to Michigan State you know these kids don't quit see I didn't give him credit for that all right coach thanks many times all right Louis the band lining up the players fell to the student section salute him with the raised
