Northern California with 21 sports being offered I first came to MJC coach divers came to my house with Coach Peterson and they kind of convinced me then the next day they put me out that I still be saying that the antique alaska's commits to MVC I've always wanted to be a swear and I thought that swimming in @jc first I'd dip my feet in the pool and see if I could get recruited or not it's very competitive and you get very close with your teammates I've had athletes get their masters degrees become doctors chiropractors lawyers you know City Council members I think the best part of my job is getting phone calls from different types of employers that want to find out about some of the athletes that I've had in the past yeah I was able to get a scholarship to Cal State Fullerton through academic success and athletic success here through teachers and coaching it's like a family I mean we're always looking out for each other and always making sure hey what can I do for you I got a student that needs this hey I got somebody that needs this class alright this class open what can we do for your athletes I've seen MJC make a difference in the life of student athletes with the in the results of MTA's see and all the athletics are second to none from what we start with what we end with are not the same students they come here and they give they get faster or they get stronger or they're a better player or a better team mate or whatever it is they all succeed always had dreams about playing college ball and endings new year without any offers - probably big the one ball kind of heartbreaker but um I ended up grinding it out hit the gym made it happen went to MJC and got it done I am signing with the collar of the University for Buffalo's got a full ride championship - the Pirates redeemed that loss you'll find out next happy Saturday from Modesto Junior College Stadium for this matchup of Fresno City College five and two over and all over all two and OH in the Valley Conference Modesto JC 6 in 1 2 and Oh in the Valley Conference don't need to spell it out for our smart football fans the winner of this game is in the driver's seat to win the Valley Conference title and put them in a great position to get a college playoff so that's what's at stake tonight I'm Chris Babcock thanks for joining us on NorCal sports TV the streaming home of Modesto Junior College Fresno City coached by Tony Kabylia in his 18th season they beat Sac City 27 to 10 last week Modesto got a big win over West Hills on the road so both these teams have put themselves in a great position and we're expecting a great football game we had a chance to catch up with rusty Stivers who's coaching in the 60th game as a head coach at Modesto Junior College coach this is the game you guys have been working on you guys have got better you put in the work and now it's an opportunity to get a Fresno City team that you've had struggles with last year you had him on the ropes couldn't finish the game what's the focus like this week well for their offense we gotta stop jonah number 10 he's the main guy he's a returning MVP of our league and then on defense they're so sound and fundamental and it starts with big 98 big Jay and they're loaded all over so we got to take care of the ball and be able to run the ball and I think we'll be okay and last year you're very successful running the football and the guys up front they do a great job then you come in with your tight end packages but your offensive line has just been something I'm sure you're very confident about yeah we've had two quarterbacks play this year and we've had a multitude of running backs and we're still able to move the ball so yeah it says a lot about our offensive line Modesto head coach rusty Stivers so Fresno City lost the toss and the Pirates as usual seems like every home game that they defer and then we'll get the ball to start the second half so the Pirates will be on defense Appreciation Day here we've got Fresno City College and their Road whites and the Pirates will kick off Parker Bonin will start things off here on a Saturday night on NorCal sports TV Oh Bryan Selby with the return in Fresno City led by their quarterback Jonah Johnson 59% thrower 1212 yards seven TDs and five interceptions for rushes are 48 rushes for 168 yards I would expect after talking with coach divers today more quarterback runs Fresno City will play to the tight end but here they're in a one back set three by one set up Rico Rosario is the tailback he's having a nice season Johnson and we've got a one play one penalty and it's gonna be a procedure first and 15 now for Fresno City right on their website Fresno City likes to talk about being balanced well I think I don't think you can get more balanced than 173 yards rushing and 173 yards passing that's their average however against some of the better teams in their schedule San Mateo they lost 17 to 3 and American River beat them 9 to 3 RPO and the Pirates are all over it and who's in the backfield number 42 Antonio Poulet and it's sack for the big defensive end gets right around the tackle and push them out of the way Adam Salazar had no chance the right tackle so second and long and the Pirates when their three-man front they're showing a blitz they come off the edge and it's a run for a small gain and it'll be third and long keys for this game for Fresno City get off to a good start win the turnover battle and make MJC drive the length of the field therefore limit big plays for the Pirates finish they let a potential state playoff berth go in last parts of the fourth quarter against Fresno City red zone be good offensively score in the red zone defensively win those battles and special teams don't necessarily have to win it but don't lose it third and long for the Rams we got another penalty flag throw over to a wide open ride routes wide receiver and crisp but not brown with the reception and Alderson with the carry and he picks up three and this is no slide of the running backs but there they've had their two top running backs hurt and the Pirates offense hasn't missed a beat they pick up three they're averaging 211 yards rushing which is third in the state 256 passing fly sweep the Curtis he's been so effective there bounces outside he's tackled by Khalid Hilton and it'll be third and short Curtis so effective in the fly sweep didn't turn it up originally try to bounce it outside and it'll be third and short Hansen at the H back and they'll run right behind him and it's a good decision and it's the Pirates initial first down of the game pirates are 53% on third down conversions number one in the state red zone 62% scoring red zone TD 52% it's 23rd and 21st they have a +3 turnover ratio and their schedule was like a bowl schedule and that's prepared of for this game Payton bass got 73 yards rushing last week bootleg Velasquez will attack the line of scrimmage he's got a wide open Brandon gray picks up 16 another pirate first down deep come back to the outside to Brandon gray and makes a nice catch and the sophomore one of the best wide receivers in the state consistent blocker catch the ball over the middle and getting better and this leadership has been one of the strengths that's got these pirates team where they are today RPO and bass picks up eight yards and paint bass getting better by the practice 13 carries for 75 yards and two touchdowns he also has two touchdowns receiving the football so the Pirates building their depth at running back cut Johnson on time its first and 10 for the Rams rosario cuts back picks up for keepsies feet moving and it's a nice gain for the rams nice cut by Rosario and if you get too far up field on the backside of that play he's very capable of cutting the ball back inside twin set to back formation before the Rams they'll come in with a tight end Erick Boston here the Pats popping on that play but these two teams were on a collision course for this game you know as told coach divers hey thanks for all your team's efforts all the way to lift they're kind of knew you were gonna be in the spot it's a matter of finishing and getting this win tonight so the Rams get the tied field goal and we've got bass as one of the receivers [Music] and tackled out of bounds and Geordie Porter doing some returning about a 26-yard return for Porter and the Pirates will take over on their own 27 yard line and watch on the series number 98 Jake akiva he kept a basket made a nice cut and picks up six yards he wanted to run it through the guard center gap but 98 lined up right over the center does a pretty good job but then credit to pirates Center Peter Kennedy for turning and getting the artist the Rams comes out and the injured player is number 22 Eric Dobbins and he came up and hit Velasquez got the caused fumble actually they're saying that Velasquez was down and the pirates retained possession that might be a break there I thought the hit caused the fumble and before Velasquez hit the turf Brett Neves will come in from Velasquez very capable quarterback bass tries to spin cycle and maybe not his best decision picks up seven but you don't like you should turn your back to the defense here's the result firing your nice tackle he's all over the field tonight call it Hilton is all over the place second and four for the pirates they move the ball into ramp territory curtis with the fly sweep weaves in and out of traffic everybody's trying to strip the ball from Fresno City but nobody wanted to make the tackle that's going to be a penalty this is this is this is undisciplined football right in front of the team bench I believe this will be a personal foul on the Rams Stephen shite is called for the late hit the run was enough by Curtis for the first down but now the penalty will add 15 yards and the Pirates will get the ball on their own or get on the Rams 24 yard line they're looking to respond to the field goal by Fresno City hitch and go and that ball is gonna be nearly intercepted Nev's throws that one high luckily he is 51 a 72 coming into this game for 643 yards five touchdowns and three interceptions 70% thrower out of your backup quarterback he's always ready to go at a moment's notice and coach Stivers has a lot of faith in the young man and that play call illustrates it two by two set for the Pirates second and 10 if your nebs here you don't want to take a sack got to get positive yardage on this play it's a bad snap and Neves picked up positive yardage on the play not much positive yardage but at least it wasn't a loss snap was just off to his left and Neves did a good job of picking it up and it's going to be third and 10 and this just out of the range of Bonin in my opinion so possibly four down territory 3x1 set five on the play clock bass with the carry just like his brother he can for a pretty good sized running back he can make it through a small hole pretty quickly watch this run in acceleration by number 15 Nev's trying to get him hurried up and watch bass is one cut right there well done fourth and four for the Pirates Nev's all day to throw he's gonna try to run it and he picks up the first down Brett navs picks up the first down it wasn't pretty it wasn't really that athletic but it was tough as nails for Neves keeps his feet driving and well done the downy high school alarm drops his shoulder and picks up the first down and the ball will be spotted on the 14 yard line I hate to call him a backup passing 5 of 11 time of possession 20 minutes and 4 seconds which is dominant but they haven't done anything with their possessions past 12 yard 12 carries for 49 yards gray three receptions for 40 here the pads popping but the running back gets a well-deserved five yards with this effort it's the stretch run to the boundary Rosario picks through traffic nice hit by Bellamy but he didn't trap Rosario kept his feet moving and picked up five yards offset I pistol formation it is supposed to be the speed option but there is two offensive linemen that are four yards downfield that time for Fresno City I don't this is this could have been very costly for the Rams it's some type of RPO that was more like a run panic option third and five can the Pirates win on third down is a big play here Johnson with the carry and he picks up the first down second time he's done that on the quarterback run and he moves the chains and now the Rams are 5 of 12 on third down his coach divers felt the extra point is good in the Rams lead 13 to 3 and Clemens is wide open and he does the rest and that is 13 straight points by Fresno City College that is a 95 yard drive the easy way off the 82 yard touchdown pass and it is a stunned crowd here in Modesto and the Rams know how to play with the lead because not only they have a deep passing game but the intermediate passing game with H back and the tight end and screens to their wide receivers you mix in with the running plays so the Pirates are undefeated so far this year at home but red alert here so the unsportsmanlike conduct will move the ball back to the 20-yard line it's a 15-yard penalty and will the pirates take advantage and get a kick return and put themselves in a scoring position but we said tonight come one of the keys for Fresno City is to make and it calls for the fair catch nobody around them which was very peculiar so the ball will the drive will start at the 25-yard line one of the keys for I saw coming to this game for Fresno is make the Pirates drive the length of the field limit the big plays and that's exactly what Fresno City has done defensively they've given up their share of first downs but no big play so far for the Pirates play pass he's got an open receiver but thrown a little bit too deep glasses gonna throw that ball between the corner and the safety he held on to it a little too long there's a window there to throw the ball but this when you throw it to the next level of the defense you're gonna throw it right into that safety right there so it's incomplete Fresno has had the game plan and they have executed it no turnovers balanced offense and getting off the field on third down second and 10 Velasquez over the middle all I can do with the catch inside the 50 down to the 47 [Music] 28 yard gain for Tommy Oh Aegon doodoo this is thrown with timing by velázquez and a wide open all I can do to pirates with the first down motion he's got Elega do two again but Velazquez will gray and the Pirates are getting frustrated offensively but Fresno City once again gets off the field on third down late arrival on United Airlines Airlines they finally have 11 pirates have had the it'll be fourth and three for the Rams pretty good job by the RAM offensive line to get some kind of push there but credit the pirates for rallying up to the football and coach Kabylia is gonna let this clock run all the way down and then call a timeout [Music] or takes the delay a game and they'll send in the putt team and then you say well how important is 40 seconds in the third quarter of a than 3 minutes and 35 seconds the Pirates have scored 14 points and the Bram's have not limited the pirates big place here in the fourth quarter Johnson with the play pass throws it out to the flat and the h-back hunt is wide open and a 14 yard gain and this is a staple of the Rams offense the momentum is all pirates but this is a little sneaked route out in the flat to hunt and the Pirates burned that flat and the Rams took advantage and they get a much-needed first down hunt is got golden hands and picks up the first down [Applause] two guys in motion it's a stretch run to the boundary Rosario picks up four Marquand Wigginton with the tackle putt motion and that usually means a boundary run and it is a stretch run right into the boundary wiggenton with the tackle Rosario with the short gain it's going to be second and seven Little John and Clements will be the two receivers here to the Modesto bench hit hunt in motion and then it's going to be counter coming back the other way and Rosario picks up enough for the first down watch 21 and that's pretty much where the balls gonna go he goes in motion then comes back they pull the the TAT or the guard and then hunt is the run through guy in Rosario is the chain moving guy and Fresno is not going to go in there delay defense but they're going to be methodical in what they do on balance set for the Rams the tight end is ineligible here run to Rosario and he sets up his blocker so well you watch the replay of this rosario runs with a lot of patience coming inside cuts back and when you are the weak side player defensive end and you lose that battle there the cutback is an available option 7-yard gain second and a short three the Rams looking to answer after 14 straight points scored by the pirates Hut comes coming back to the football and the Rams are inside the red zone they got this ball with 11 10 left in the fourth quarter on their own 28 unbalanced sent once again for the Rams lead play and it's a tackle for a loss gap control this time to to Pugh and company go gap control here and win the battle and play this play on the Fresno City College side of the football Maya there as well second and 1140 chewed up four minutes on this Drive [Applause] [Music] [Applause] stretch run to the Fresno bench in Rosario picks up and it all depends on where this one is spotted and we've got a penalty we've got a flag on the field and usually when it's thrown there it's a rewired receiver holding we'll see what the call is and judging by the body language of the Rams I think this one's gonna get marched back so it's a boundary run and there was a takedown right there and if it's a spot foul it looks like this one's on the Rams Jerry Robinson with the call and it will be marched back so it'll be second at 17 instead of a first down run [Music] [Applause] I believe though it'll be second in eighteen the down marker says third down but I believe it'll be second in eighteen the box hasn't switched it now has switched so it is second and eighteen there was a holding call on Fresno and then we had the unsportsmanlike conduct one on the Pirates won on Fresno so those offset so it'll be second and seventeen and the Rams have not been have not been afraid to run into football in second or third third and long and although they didn't gain a much yardage in the first half the running game has taken its full effect here in the long term in the fourth quarter second and 18 can the pirates come up with a big play here Johnson has time to throw into the end zone to Littlejohn and it's incomplete no Flags clean play both players going hard its second at 17 so on the second down and long the pirates hold and it'll be now third and 17 and then the Pirates will look like they're going to go to their dime defense can Marquis Higgins or one of their linebackers come up with the play and knock the Rams off this drive washed it off set to Johnson's left late blitz doesn't get home in Johnson scrambles he picks up five managing the game the clock will continue to run but it'll be fourth and 12 and and the Rams will come on for the field goal they got this ball with 11 minutes and 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter they've already they're gonna work five plus minutes off on this drive that started on their own 28 and then if they can put up points it's a it's a big win because it forces the Pirates to score a touchdown to take the lead 38 yard field goal is up and it's no good and the Pirates defense holds so the good thing for Fresno is they work time off the clock the bad thing is is they missed the field goal attempt and the pirates will take over on their own 20-yard line their last two drives have ended up being touchdowns they scored their first points of the game in the first quarter been held scoreless until the fourth quarter Velasquez with a quarterback run and he continues to run backwards and it's a seven yard loss there's got to be a point in the play where he just realized it's not gonna be a party every play you got to manage the game a little bit better and now it'll be second at 16 and Fresno City will try to get substitutes in they do they get into their dime defense they've got two safeties that are 15 yards off the football they want to keep things in front Falasca as the pocket crumbles and he'll run for it and there's the Dan Velazquez we're used to seeing plays the ball in front of the chains it'll be a very manageable third and four here's the immediate decision the coach Stivers is looking for plays not their plant the foot and get upfield and that's exactly what the Turlock alum did 3rd and 5 for 13 counting here from Modesto I'm Chris Babcock thanks for joining us tonight on North Cal sports TV Velasquez late Blitzer it's picked up he's got Porter that was outstretched hands it'll be fourth and 5 and what is coach diver is going to do he does have all three timeouts left and he's going to bring on the punt football is what is called the 4-minute offense and when you have the lead and you go into 4-minute offense mode you get the yards you deserve you don't fight for extra yards you stay in bounds and you want to move the chains and the goal is to run out the clock and keep the ball in your hand easier said and done but the Rams will line up in there unbalanced set meaning they're tied in is covered by a wide receiver he's not eligible usually means a boundary run and that's exactly what it is and Rosario is tackled for a loss now as Coach divers going to use his timeouts he's going to wait so now it'll be Rams playing behind the chains second and 14 to to pool with the tackle and I would imagine if the Rams don't get a big gain on this play the coach divers will call the timeout play clock down to five Hut motion usually means they're going to run right behind it will run that counter eight so they run the counter age and the pirates are all over it and it's the Rams are going the wrong way they lost three yards on the second down play they lose four yards on this they lost three yards on the first down play lose four yards on this play and it's third and 18 Stivers does it call the timeout which that surprises me a little bit if they don't get this first down play I'll bet a steak dinner that Coach diver's calls a timeout third and long single safety the Pirates are offside so it's going to be a free play for Johnson and he does just throws it out of bounds but it'll be the Pirates not playing with discipline on that play Johnson will draw draw the offsides instead of third and 18 will be third and 13 I believe Higgins was offsides on that play so third and 11 three receivers set and when the Rams have got into this they've run verticals with the corner route out of the slot that's the same thing they do on this play intercepted but out of the hands of Gonzalez Gonzalez made plans for the party before he got the invitation ball hits him right in the chest and Gonzalez wants to return this but he's got to catch the ball first and it's dripping with gravy but his eyes were upfield that incomplete pass saves a timeout for Modesto so they've got all three timeouts the Rams do work some time off the clock they add the ball with 419 it's now at 239 short kick and it goes out of bounds and the Pirates will [Applause] uncharacteristically bad punt for rio frio and the pirates are in business at their own 35-yard line with two minutes and 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter a field goal takes it at overtime a touchdown puts the Pirates and a chance to win the game both teams have all three timeouts left Velasquez he'll run and he picks up eight give him eight yards on this play look at the effort by number four here the Red Sea parts Velasquez since it's senses it it immediately gets up the field great hustle that time though by Nava Rick Jackson Velasquez pump and go to Porter [Applause] there's a flag on the play but I don't know if the I don't know who they're gonna call this on cuz Porter look like Porter pushed off but you'll just never know I mean Porter's senses this might be intercepted so he's gonna go up hungrily for the football I don't know will it get picked up they call pass interference on the Pirates soapy eye on Porter now it can be critical of that because if he doesn't go up like that I think that ball might be intercepted so Porter called for the offensive pass interference it'll be a 10-yard loss so instead of second and two it'll be second and 17 off the pass interference but credit Porter for going up at like a defensive back and fighting off that football because that looked like a sure interception - OH - left here from Modesto college Stadium I'm Chris Babcock and it's been quite a football game after a very very very quiet first half [Music] [Applause] Oh Logan dudu and Kurtis will switch spots five on the play clock the snap to Velazquez he scrambles how did he break that tackle picks up nearly ten yards and it'll be third down and I believe coach divers called no timeout de Velazquez get out of bounds he did it'll be third and seven and a for-sure four down territory pirates need seven to keep this drive going Rams playing with a single deep safety they bring a late Blitzer Velasquez gets outside then he scrambles and he goes down he fumbles it's recovered from the pirates so they'll have a fourth down play and coach divers immediately calls a timeout [Applause] late blitzer delay blitz that time by shite and then he gets he funnels Velasquez back to Rodney woods and Velasquez was dislodged to the football it'll be fourth and 20 and coach divers calls a timeout so the Rams will more than likely send three maybe delay a guy they'll keep a spy on Velasquez but they're gonna play right along that 45 yard line and defend the chains and it was the Pirates scored on their first possession of the game and then 20 unanswered points by Fresno City but then 14 straight by the Pirates the defense gotta stop then the Pirates got pretty good field position on the short punt but a couple of losses for the Pirates Neves in at quarterback here you got Porter and Curtis to one side gray and Iligan dudu to the other and there's three defensive backs playing right along the chains and they'll heave it downfield and it'll be intercepted by Xavier Alexander and he returns it down to the 22 yard line but then he fumbles the return and the disco so the pass was intercepted by Alexander we know that for sure then on the return there was a late flag the Pirates defense will take the field so once again Fresno City showing their dominance in this series they lead this series so Daniel Solano a number 53 I believe is called for fighting and then he'll be ejected so I don't know if that will affect him next week against Sac City it will so the ball will be spotted at the 11 yard line now the Pirates have two timeouts but the Rams they've won the turnover battle in the games that they have won they are now a plus 7 turnover ratio boundary run to Rosario and he'll get into the end zone 12 yard touchdown run by Rosario [Applause] stretch run to the wide side of the field and hunt and company are out blocking and the Pirates give up the score [Music] and they're on for the extra point bad snap and Cooper jumps on it and it's 26:17 [Music] Alexander with the interception and the Pirates will travel to Sac City they need to get this get a nice return but it'll be tough to score against this Fresno defense they're gonna be dropping guys deep but the Pirates are averaging 38 points a game they're being held to 17 so although that's more than the average of Fresno City when you're when you're holding down one of the leading scorer and teams in the state you've done your job yeah they've given up two big plays sometimes that's going to happen but when the when the Rams needed to make a play defensively in that last Drive of Modesto they did and it's a frustrating night for the Pirates and we hope Kendra McDowell is okay he was hurt earlier in the game green with the return and he brings it up to the 44 yard line with a minute 18 left we taking it out to the home for many other wide personality iris Nev's quick out route the porter and he gets out of bounds and it'll be enough for a first down did the smart thing got as many yards as he could and gets out of bounds bass into the gate back into the game three receivers set next week Fresno hosts Sequoia Neves shallow cross to Porter he's got blockers in front the clock will temporarily stop the pirates will get right back up on to the football Anderson Grover checks in for Porter under a minute left Nev's will route open bass he's tackled but he makes the catch 17-yard gain clock stops and I believe coach Kabylia calls a time out to talk about this one so the Rams 169 yards rushing that means they had 131 rushing in the second half they only have 38 yards in the first half so you look back you know the one drive they did score they were stopped on fourth down but they worked more than seven minutes off the clock and again managing time management is the entire game it just doesn't happen in the fourth quarter it's the entire game so it'll be first and ten from the Pirates 12 yard line out route touchdown Modesto Curtis Navs to Curtis that did take long took 28 seconds to score Nev's to curtis 12 yard touchdown in a very important extra point here and the kick is good so it's 2624 pirates have two timeouts the the Rams will go on what you call on-site alert Hands team so you get your guys your best athletes that have the best hands and the Pirates are gonna onside kick here in the way the ball-shaped sometimes it takes funny bounces and I think on that last drive Modesto I think literally just let Fresno score down here because they knew the game was going to run out if they try to stop them so they get the ball back after the touchdown they scored less than 30 seconds and they're gonna go onside kick here and the focus the last couple weeks has been putting more time into special teams where the Pirates reap what they sow bounine will tee it up there are some fresh jerseys on the field that haven't played much tonight so that's always a concern but the Rams practice this constantly soda the Pirates late-game situations onside kick and it's recovered by Little John I don't know what the purpose is of him trying to return that just catch it and take a knee and there's 46 seconds left the Pirates do have two timeouts but not enough time and not enough time to get the ball back unless something Joe pasar chick New York Giants like happens and I highly doubt that will but it's been a exciting fourth quarter here but this Rams offense and defense has done their job they're gonna go in victory formation and coach divers will call a quick timeout looks like he's not going to use his timeouts and the Rams are gonna get the victory so Fresno City College with the road victory their strong third quarter if 17 points was enough to get the victory did they say something about McDowell that he was okay or gacha gacha we don't have any further reports on McDowell we know that he did have movement in his hands in his arms when he was being taken off the field so hopefully he is okay but the Rams come to Modesto and
