okay all right [Music] i don't have the i don't have a drum set to keep covering it from here oh baby it's time for another throwback and you may notice that i am wearing a pink slip t-shirt from the iconic performance at the wango tango pink slip of course being the name of lindsay lohan's iconic band in the 2003 smash hit masterpiece freaky friday [Music] i know that everybody likes to compare this movie to mean girls because it came out the next year but they are completely separate movies they are both independently and amazing look at the reality of being a teenager and there is room for both leave a like on the video if you want me to talk about me and girls though let's try to get 20 000 for mean girls video now i've actually been meaning to do this video for months pretty much the second i got this shirt but they had originally sent me a crop top and it was just a whole thing it derailed the whole schedule but we're finally here and i'm so happy talking about a movie that helped form my being as an individual is exactly what i need this holiday season now i realize that a lot of remakes are trash and when i hear about one happening it makes me kind of want to put my head through a wall but there are exceptions and i truly believe that this is an exception of the highest order the 2003 freaky friday remake is so charming so funny so heartwarming so badass and i enjoy it every single time i watch it even now 17 years after i originally saw it in theaters with my mom as a young kid getting into punk rock and pop punk and learning how to play electric guitar and that being such an important part of my life in discovering myself as a person i was obviously heavily connected to the lindsay lohan aesthetic of this movie and most teenage girls or teenagers in general go through a phase where you just don't get along with your parents as well as you used to so i think this movie came out just before i hit that face so sorry mom i don't know if i ever pulled that you're ruining my life bit but you know either way this movie is awesome there are a couple of issues of dated comedy that just kind of default to accents funny but i think it holds up so well and a lot of what made it so special almost didn't happen for a couple reasons when you think back to the movie other than the badass soundtrack the thing that stands out the most is definitely the performance by jamie lee curtis now i'm obviously going to go into the full movie but the basis of the story is that a mom and a daughter who struggle to understand one another switch bodies allowing them to gain some perspective and learn to appreciate the love that they have for one another and the duo power of jamie lee curtis and lindsay lohan is so good that it's hard to imagine that it almost didn't happen just four days before filming began annette benning was scheduled to be tess the mom and dropped out for unknown reasons and considering that lindsay had been preparing for the role for over a year learning how to play guitar practicing with the band that is a major change to come down the pipeline that close to filming so the role very last minute went to jamie lee curtis who at the time was on a book tour but it somehow all magically came together she got the script just as she was flying back to la and the school where most of the movie was being filmed was literally a block away from her house so she was still able to see and help take care of her family while doing the shoot and on top of that the whole thing managed to wrap before christmas so it perfectly fit her timeline it's truly like it was meant to be giving us iconic moments like oh i'm like the crypt keeper i literally cannot imagine that performance not having the energy that jamie lee curtis brought to it so imagine my shock when i found out that someone tried to restrain her i just remember asking the grips if they could put some baby powder so that my feet would slide i guess the next day the director was like hey the editor might be a little bit worried that you're you're going too big the performance might be a little big and thankfully jamie put them in their place uh this is just what i'm gonna deliver for you and it's your job to sort of tone it but this is what i'm gonna do now imagine if jamie lee curtis wasn't the person she was and actually rolled it back instead of being like hey look this is what you're getting this is what i think is best if i think about it too much it's gonna get bad would this movie be as iconic the answer was no it would not who edited this bruce green bruce you almost stood in the way of true art but we forgive you but it's not just the performance by jamie lee curtis that makes this whole thing so amazing it's also a really moving story about a mother and daughter who need to learn how to come together so they can understand one another better to understand where that divide started how anna felt that her dad was being replaced after his death how she felt like she'd been pushed to the side since her mom found her new fiance ryan how the mom didn't understand things from anna's perspective and just assumed she was being dramatic and acting out and then really coming together to understand one another it's so beautiful but let's get into it so the movie starts with an a1 cover-up happy together as we get a general idea of this family dynamic jamie lee curtis ortez is the ultra organized therapist who needs a strict schedule to keep everything together and lindsay lohan is anna the avril lavigne inspired teen daughter who definitely isn't as on the ball and that style was the vibe minus that choker i had that outfit i dress like that all the time yes this is an entire video dedicated to me reminiscing about my minimal bright sides of middle school in early high school deal with it did you guys know that i used to be in a band i used to be cool anyways this is where we kind of get the individual dynamics of their day-to-day lives the two don't get along super well and it feels like the mom disregards her feelings tessa thinks that anna is overdramatic and the truth is somewhere in the middle bye honey make good choices that line was improvised by the way so we start off with anna and her school life she has great friends does well in school but has a teacher who seemingly has it out for her failing her regardless of the quality and ends up in detention after she makes the comparison to his behavior in the power tripping dictators of 1984. dominated by one all-powerful ego tripping dictator except he had hair and then gets detention again when she hits her old friend turned bully in the head with a volleyball things aren't so easy in high school you know we also get a glimpse into tessa's life who we know is juggling a variety of responsibilities from her kids to her upcoming wedding to numerous patients but wow all these complaints about anandot being a responsible daughter when she's the one who's texting and driving but it's fine she makes it to her appointment with this poor man evan right this morning was good then i got up and wow she was ahead of the curve with a hand sanitizer it's so weird watching things through a modern day lens it's clear that she loves her kids but it's also really easy to see how having a therapist mom could make it difficult to feel listened to in a genuine way you're always going to feel like you're being disregarded as a patient not a daughter and yeah i get it if your kid is super hyperbolic you might not want to believe them when they say a teacher is ruining their life and out to get them but back with anna she actually has a nice moment with her crush jake they start talking about music and he offers to listen to his hive's import with her and then this teacher ruins it prepared is to you as not is to test god this guy is such a knob and then she gets home to her brother hitting her guitar with drumsticks the guitar their deceased father left behind for her yeah i would have atomic wedgied the little [ __ ] too one two three iconic rock moment [Music] [Applause] [Music] yes i am now the old loser with memories of a high school band it's fine this role that christina vidal played was originally supposed to go to kelly osbourne but she had to drop out because her mom was diagnosed with cancer but christina [ __ ] rocks i also feel like every generation has a movie that features a cool band that releases sometime in their youth or multiple if you were lucky you got something like this or almost famous or even like josie and the pussycats or i guess even like things like lemonade mouth and band slam and if you weren't you got camp rock sorry camp rockers i'll be nice i just really wanted to throw in that clapping scene then right as anna goes into the awesome guitar solo tess cuts the power time's up it's after sex but badass music isn't the only thing out there to listen to with today's just pretty loud her wedding is in like two days she just published a new book the grandfather is in town and her son has underwear stuck to his head what is this one of them thongs and agent gibbs or ryan here is going through the typical struggles of the step parents you're gonna spoil your dinner you know this dad thing can be hard or easy but in all this insanity the band finds out that they got an audition at the house of blues for a spot in the wango tango show but oh no it's the same night as the rehearsal dinner there's my banana grandpa over here but even they know the mom isn't likely to let her skip out on the rehearsal dinner for this audition i'm gonna talk to my mom all right we're screwed yep especially now that she just got a call from the school explaining her two detentions and f in english class and her solution to that and the atomic wedgie is removing anna's door which i'm sure goes over great with every teenager that this has been used on don't do that wow you're ruining my life yeah she's a dramatic teenager dealing with a lot of emotions and anger following the loss of her father and sucks at explaining things but the mom also doesn't really listen that well so they go out for dinner at the house of chang and ryan is really trying to make anna come around on him he pre-ordered the duck because he knows it's her favorite told her where the door is but she's just not having it stop groveling man let her come to you she'd come with a hatchet which lets us know that even though the mom is getting married to him in like two days anna's just not really ready to let him in so he goes to check on the duck and this is when anna asks about the audition all right what do you want to go to this really important audition that we're having tomorrow night that we could never have again at the house of blues and at first the mom's like hey rowan audition that's amazing tomorrow you mean after the rehearsal dinner right so this is where the real war starts because for some reason the mom just won't take this as like i love music this is my passion this is an amazing opportunity i would like to do it and just tries to start shrinking her this is about your dad isn't it mom stop shrinking me and yeah she is still clearly dealing with some issues following the loss of her father and the wedding but this probably isn't the time to bring that up and look i asked my mom and she said she would be 100 fine with me skipping the rehearsal dinner to go to an audition because it's a [ __ ] rehearsal dinner so the two basically go back and forth thinking that the other has a significantly easier life and anna even thinks she's the only thing in her mom's life that isn't perfect so this lovely lady at the chinese restaurant comes over and tries to help them with magic fortune cookies which will literally help them see things from the other's perspective honey so no one feels that earthquake except them and everything seems totally fine until the clocks strike midnight and they switch bodies which is pretty disorienting especially when the little brother bops in with this mom's dead i'm dead and they completely change mannerisms we see it the second they change bodies and their positions change in their sleep but lindsay had to give jaime a rundown on different intonations of shut up and lindsay had to learn how to stop talking with her hands so much because it's not really something jamie does unless she's like really stressing a point it's really amazing how quickly they adapted to this considering jamie lee curtis wasn't around for any of the pre-production stuff and this is where the real magic of the movie starts because lindsay lohan is really good at playing an adult and jamie lee curtis is amazing at playing a teenager get away you clone freak so to avoid getting locked up for insanity they have to pretend to be one another until they can figure out the situation because their original plan to fix things didn't quite work out and they quickly realized that something must have happened at the house of change it's quick honestly almost every single line in this movie is iconic so i'm really struggling at which ones i should be picking to put in this video because i just want to share all of it with you lovely people so while it would be easier just to stay at home the two have a lot of responsibilities so they decide to go through their morning routines before they meet up at lunch to talk to the people at house of chang and it doesn't take long for the mom to realize hey this kid's a little [ __ ] harry could you settle down please bite me and this is where it starts getting really weird the mom hates the look of jake but anna can't stop being flirty even in a different body which is definitely gonna send jake some mixed signals but hey at least she can finally realize how horrible stacy is but anna also starts to realize that her mom's life is a little bit more complicated than she gave her credit for and she just doesn't deal with it mostly wanna get that oh no way i'm not answering that thing again the therapy sessions are basically just a complete disaster because the mom just keeps saying just ask them how they feel about that and how do you feel about that depressed until another mom reveals that she was reading her teen daughter's diary that's bad bad mom award nothing is going on between her and this guy she wouldn't be writing about it in her diary she'd be out there doing it and her mom does finally see that mr bates has it out for anna and realizes it's because she had turned him down for a date back in high school she had a boyfriend and you were weird this is also where she gets the perspective from anna's friends that anna feels like she's been ignored since she started dating ryan this is also where she reveals really casually that she can't go to the audition because the rehearsal dinner is just so important she is totally ruining our lives you are the culprit it's such a class you're the culprit so anna finally shows up with the volvo and they head on over to the restaurant to get switched back and while they initially try to pretend that they have no idea what's going on it does come out that the only way to switch back is for the fortune to come true there's no time to figure that out now because anna has her honors qualifying exams and the mom has a parent-teacher interview meeting for harry and it turns out he wrote his essay on who he admires most about anna who of course is her right now turns out he just thinks all the fighting is super fun i am so glad i don't have siblings so she gets back to the house to try to find the fortune but it turns out that ryan surprised her with a tv interview so they get ushered right out the door and their mom really isn't having any more luck with the test cause wow amazing it's not that easy just to jump back into high school and expect to be able to take the same level of tests and stacy the [ __ ] tricked her into looking at her test to make it seem like she was cheating miss brown she's copying my tests teenagers man but jake saves the date then she ruins his opinion of her by erasing stacy's test mom has a bit more in common with teenage girls than she thinks and she is so arrogant that she just assumes jake will still like her even though she's been nothing but rude to him all day and just pulled that stunt but it's interview time and she finally realizes just before it starts that sinison's is actually senescence it's like senile old people got it you got it and mostly just starts making jokes which uh throws off ryan because this is not uh the typical tess coleman brand but hey everybody else seems to love it that's why i've been craving caffeine all day i thought i was dying and this scene this is the scene that they recorded on the second day that the editor was like maybe you're just being a bit too much dude the script had crowd surfing in it but hey dottie was also upset by the performance and had her escorted off the property and she ducks away to a coffee shop where surprise jake works too you like the vines i got the bootlegs shut up and this is where things get more weird hit me baby one more time yeah jake is super into anna in the mom's body and this is really the only area of contention that i have with this movie the mom is just so mean to him and horrible in general in his presence that i can't imagine him just suddenly not being into the mom anymore at the end of the movie because like the mom is like actually anna and the cool one unless the aura is just so distinct in the switch but whatever it's fine we'll get there so he gives her a ride on his motorcycle which ryan sees and he's already feeling weird because he doesn't know what the hell is going on with the woman he's supposed to be marrying the next day so he gets back to the house and he's just a little bit tilty what you were doing on the eve of our wedding straddling some guy on the back of a big black harley it was a ducati so the mom comes out to save the day to say that you know anna wasn't allowed to go on a date with him until she scoped him out first and speak of the little angel here he is now i still believe still believe and then we get yet another iconic moment in film history hit me baby i love it not her stop it promise you'll leave my mother alone so it's rehearsal dinner time and they finally have the fortune and can get a general idea of what they need to do then selfless love will change you back oh great so that means we're stuck like this forever and obviously the friends don't know what's up so they sneak in to try to kidnap anna to do the audition problem being tess definitely doesn't play guitar and then jake shows up too it makes no sense but i love it so much when i look into your eyes stop it jake believe me but the friends get caught trying to sneak anna out and this is where anna realized that ryan actually does care about them so much because when anna says he just thinks they're a stupid rock band ryan talks about how much he respects tessa's life and wants anna to like him on her own terms but he does care about her and harry so not only has he encouraged anna to go audition he's also told tess to be there to see it happen because he's awesome and that's just what should have happened all along it is the rehearsal dinner you'll be gone for like 20 or 30 minutes ryan was shocked that she'd even said no in the first place because remember she asked when ryan was going to check on the duck because i'm assuming if he was there he would have been like oh let her let her do it mr dude you rock but as we established earlier muscle memories do not transfer in the switch and she has no idea how to play guitar [Music] thankfully anna and the mom's body shows up and it's like it's cool i unplugged you just go out there and fake it and i've got you covered for the solo go out there and act like pete right yeah richard's mom i knew that now anyone looking would know that she was faking it and probably you know be like hey why did she just suddenly dart to the side is there somebody is there somebody on the side playing is somebody else playing the solo but it's fine and it's fun and this song actually slaps holy [ __ ] i cannot stop myself from singing it anytime i hear it top tier like i really cannot get over how good this band is lindsay lohan doing these moves in high heels come on and there's jake in the front row being like oh my god wow anna rocks and i get it a good onstage performance is very attractive but it's so interesting that that's the thing that makes him like oh i guess i can just forget about the weird [ __ ] you did today and the fact that i think your mom is a badass it is you that i like it's fine i will allow it so not only does the mom finally appreciate her music but the audition goes so well that they make it into the wango tango gig i had no idea what it takes ah it's exciting hear music so they get back from the audition and the mom's just kind of accepting that they're not gonna change back so she's like just tell ryan that it's not the right time i don't want to marry someone if you're not ready yet just tell him that i love him and if he loves me the way i think he does he'll wait i guess that i was just so happy i wasn't thinking about what's best for you and harry but then anna starts giving a toast about how she aka her mom was finally happy again for the first time in years since they lost their dad singing in the shower again not well i might add and gives this beautiful speech about how no one can replace her dad because he was a really great dad but that maybe someone awesome someone like ryan could fit in a new family unit for someone as special as ryan that we would all just make a little room and these were the two moments of selfless love tess being willing to put off her wedding until anna was okay with it and anna making the room to let ryan in so her mom can be happy and at this point the two just understand each other's lives so much better obviously there's still gonna be some issues as a teenage girl or mom like it's not always gonna be perfect but they switch back just in time for the wedding where the mom did a total solid and made sure jake was there and he's just kind of like yeah yesterday was weird can we just start again maybe because thankfully one day shouldn't be too hard to get past even if your crush did start pining after your mother who was actually you but still your mother and through the whole movie the little brother and the grandfather had been kind of feuding in the same way if i switch with harry do i have to wear a thong youth is wasted on the young you go oscar then you'll fart and it looks like the mom might just meddle again god i love this movie in 2020 that would have been a clear setup for a sequel i don't know what it is but tackle jokes they they do it for me and then we get one more badass performance a completely new song to cap off the movie lindsey i want to play with this band but like aged as they are now or back when i was younger so it's not just adult me trying to hang out with 15 year olds because that would be really weird and this just shows how far they've truly come since the beginning like not only are they getting along better and understanding each other more but anna's mom's literally letting her band play her wedding and that's about it for this iconic movie i don't know if anyone cares anymore but i think it's bitchin and i had an absolutely delightful time with this and i hope you guys all watch it if you haven't yet or re-watch it if you haven't seen it in a long time if i can help spread some love for jennifer's body i can do it again with freaky friday but that is going to do it for today's video thank you all so much for watching thanks as always to my
