this Honda mower was a trade-in I took as part of a sale the strangest part was that they didn't mention it was going to be a Honda and I only realized it when I saw them using it the day I brought my mower over to them when I loaded this one up in the car I had to wonder why would they trade this mower in I hate to say it but after looking at it for a few minutes and trying to use it I soon realized why they didn't want this mower anymore in today's video we look at this Honda mower and the problem is that I have to find out why they traded this mower in if you didn't know I'm a huge Honda fan but I'm also aware they're not indestructible either besides if I plan on selling this mower I need to be able to fix whatever issues that it has and boy does it have some issues now I'm going to try and repair this mower however it may not be the exact repair you need to make to yours we'll explore other options later in the video now we're only going to mention what these other options could be we don't have enough time to look into them but if you need more information on these options you're welcome to ask as many questions as you need to from what I was told this mower was previously serviced by a local shop and was recently in there for a no start condition that turned out to be stale fuel the strange thing is that it came back looking like this I guess I must care way too much because I would at least spray it off the dirt and oil as part of the diagnostic or at least out of courtesy but I guess they didn't have time to spend on it now it does look like they did have the time to charge them for a new air filter though which means if the service can't be charged they simply won't do it the one thing that the buyer did mention to me was that the handlebars would not stay in the upright position which kind of surprised me that the shop didn't fix it for them but then again the service isn't free now I don't think the handle knobs are the right one for this particular mower because they simply don't have enough threads to close and make contact with the handlebar so in the meantime I put some large Rusty washers I had to make up the difference and that's enough to keep the handlebar up in place it's not perfect but it'll work for right now yeah now this is not an issue but this is a complaint the brake handle is really squeaky when using it and it also includes the self-propelled handle as well which for some reason won't return to its normal position instead it's staying wherever you put it however after taking a closer look I soon realized the self-propelled cable isn't even attached to it it looks like the spring may have bent and that's why it won't stay attached now with the cable not attached that obviously means the self-propelled isn't working so I have to wonder if the cable is stuck and that's why it won't work but after pulling on the cable it does move and sort of returns but it's not moving freely so we may have to work on that later on the other issue is that the speed selector isn't moving very well either I think it's in second or third gear so we might have to fix this later on there's also a lot of oil staining on the side of the mower from past oil changes the weird part is that the seller doesn't do their own maintenance which means this has to be from the previous owner I'd like to get rid of this stain if possible but I've never had to deal with it before if you know of a way to get rid of it I'd like to hear about it the next thing I want to do is try and start it and see how it runs now I know it works because I saw them using it however I haven't tried using it myself for those of you don't know the fuel shut off can be in the off position just so long as there's fuel in the carb foreign it looks like The Recoil is having some issues and part of the reason is that the metal piece that keeps the rope from cutting into the cover has come loose I'm also certain The Recoil could benefit from some lubrication as well so I almost ran out of fuel there but I got it to run long enough to figure out that it does run fine and more importantly that the self-propelled does work it just requires some Force to pull on the cable I'm not sure if the cable is the issue or if it's the transmission but it would be nice to get it working again after tilting the mower on its side with the car but facing towards the sky I'm going to inspect the underside of the mower and surprisingly it looks pretty good there are a few small gouges on the blade but nothing terrible it's also fairly clean as well which I did not expect and for once I don't feel like cleaning it instead I'm going to clean the dirty part of the engine and see if we have a leak in this area which would explain why it's so dirty so what are my plans for this mower well more than likely I'm going to sell it or possibly even give it away for free depending upon how I feel but I need to make sure it works like it should and doesn't have any issues with it so why would I care about how it works if I'm just going to give it away well I feel kind of bad if I gave something away that had some sort of issue with it it's not a liability thing it's just a personal thing and I guess it's a bit of Pride as well but don't tell anyone now I've seen plenty of Honda engines with a lot of dirt on this part of the engine but this one is really bad and I need to check to make sure the governor arm is not leaking oil otherwise your risk damaging the engine and that's obviously a serious issue now it's not perfect and that's fine I just need to clean enough to spot any oil leaks and this bit of cleaning will do just fine while I have the sprayer out I might as well clean the rest of the engine and mower as well is it important that I clean the rest of it not really but it would look really weird if I only cleaned half the engine now I will admit that cleaning stuff that's really dirty can be somewhat relaxing and maybe even therapeutic and definitely satisfying if you don't think so give it a try and if it doesn't make you feel somewhat better then I'll be the first one to apologize to you I also want to see if I can get rid of this oil stain I've never seen this before on paint so I'm not sure if there's anything I can do to get rid of it if not it's not a big deal but it just looks bad if it's in the paint I might have to use some rubbing compound to try and get it out unfortunately that didn't do anything so either I can live with them or I might try again later on but right now I'm gonna move on to the wheels the wheels are commonly overlooked and I understand why they're low to the ground can be difficult to clean and most people never look twice at them anyway however I noticed them and when they're dirty it kind of bothers me you know I never thought I had OCD but I might have to reassess that I only have one replace I want to clean and that's the rear part of the mower I know it's not going to be seen because it's under the cover but while the mower is on the table it's easy to get to so it's easy to clean now if I hadn't mentioned it yet but using a pressure washer even a cheap electric one will save you some time when it comes to cleaning however I don't like to use mine because I feel like it's going to do more damage to the Rusty areas and also because I typically end up getting soaked myself now doing it this way isn't so bad now one or more of the wheels is not spinning very well and I think we found it now I could just try to spray some lube on it but I want to remove the bolt to see if there's any buildup on it that's keeping it from spinning the first thing I realized is that the wavy washer is on the outside of the wheel instead of the inside which might be one reason why it's hard to spin now there is some build up on the bolt but it's not that bad however I'm still gonna clean it and use some sandpaper to get rid of the build up someone asked me about the Finish being too rough after sanding and if you're worried about that then you can try and polish it but I'm just going to use lithium grease instead now you don't have to use lithium grease instead use whatever you have on hand now some lube is better than no lube after putting the lithium on I'll then put the washer back on on the inside of the wheel and then reinstall it after that I'll then test how much better it spins and as you can see it spins a whole lot better now if you've seen my videos before you know what I have to do next now the tread on these wheels is there but it's almost gone however instead of replacing the entire wheel I might consider just swapping the tires from a different mower with the same size tires either way the only tires that need the tread are the drive Wheels speaking of the drive Wheels as you can see they don't free Spin like the ones in the front and that's because of the transmission and if you only have enough Lube to do two wheels the rear ones are the ones you need to do and here's why the drive gears have a spring-loaded key that acts like a ratchet so you can spin them one way and you can hear the key skipping inside the gear this allows it to not engage the drive however turn it the other way and the key will engage the gear and turn the transmission now to prevent the key from wearing out in the shaft we need to lubricate it now there's a better way of doing this but it requires a special tool and since more than likely you won't have it we're going to do it the easy way and spray our Lube at the end of the gears and maybe some of it will work its way to the key now there's nothing wrong with doing it this way so if you want to remove the retaining clip and properly Lube it well that's your choice after our easy Lube job I'm also going to lube the bearings in the wheels as well then I'll put the wheel back on I'll then do the same for the other side and we should be ready to continue on with our maintenance routine now I've gotten comments from some viewers who have said they've never ever lubed anything or even changed the oil and their mower still runs like the day they got it if that's you then congratulations because I think you're one very lucky individual if you feel like you don't need to do any preventative maintenance be at least ready to do some Aftercare once something bad does happen I'm also going to lubricate the brake and self-propelled handles because they're kind of squeaky while I'm at it I'm also going to lube the cable for the brake on both ends if your cable is difficult to move it might be easier just to replace it now I'm not going to lube the self-propelled cable just yet because I'm considering replacing it instead the best part is that I just picked up a parts Mower and I might get what I need from that one now once all the maintenance is done I think it's time to start it up and see how well it cuts [Music] foreign [Music] so it starts and runs fairly well but we definitely need to fix the recoil either replacing the metal eyelet or just replacing the whole recoil with a new or used one at least it cuts really well and has a lot more power than my old abused Honda but the problem is that the mulching plug has been removed so it basically just throws large grass clippings all over the yard now the clippings are just laying on top of the lawn and it's going to turn brown in a couple of days so to keep that from happening I really want to put the mulching plug back in hopefully the parts mower has one I can take from it if not I'm gonna have to make something to keep it from leaving the clippings on top of the lawn now I really have to wonder if the self-propelled is really broken or if it was bypassed on purpose another reason why the self-propelled would be bypassed is if the repair shop bypassed it saying there was an issue with the cable or transmission and hopes the owner would want to fix it but that is just a theory so in the end I think I got a really good trade-in and I hate to say it but the timing couldn't be any better as my personal mower is getting close to the end of course I've been saying that for the last four years so my question is should I try and fix the self-propelled and the speed selector lever or should I just leave it alone and use it the way it is personally I'd like to at least look at it and see how bad it is and maybe see if it is fixable but I might just be wasting my time too thank you for watching I really do appreciate your time here please feel free to ask me any questions about this project or your own projects and I hope to see you in the next video
