all right so here we have an MTV this is a 42-inch cut with a power belt series for 175 engine it's 2013 so it came into me like this and this valve cover was hanging off this cover engine cover sure ours has got no bolts and it's been removed before and I was basically told that it has a problem with a compression release on the camshaft yeah those lugs had a bit of a rough life for a 13 I say the mode doesn't actually come with a battery the riddler need to put a battery in to be able to test this but because the clearances are all fine here we should have compression and really the the compression release is to make the cranking easier in the first few seconds of starting up so in theory it should be how to turn it over but if it turns and then suddenly stops then yes there probably is a compression release problem let's see if this thing has any life so I say what should happen is it should just keep turning at a fairly constant speed now if they are correct what should happen if the head diagnosis is correct is it would turn and then it would suddenly stop and then it returned it will stop so we'll see what happens and yes if it stops then it is most likely the compression release yeah I think I'm going to pull the engine out of here I'll take some path what we should find the camshaft with a damaged or a missing compression release it's a little weight which flings out the way you centrifugal force so yeah let's get pulled in [Applause] look at that I have not just pull out there it's come from inside the engine [Music] [Music] [Music] so there we go that's the engine out of the machine and the main bolt which goes in the crankshaft little bit tricky because of the thread lock which had been used but yeah you can see the amount of packed grass around the steering column there anyway I've got the engine on the bench so we'll take a look yes I found a little piece which actually did here on camera four lands in this earth I dropped the the train plug by now is this falling out I would say is definitely from the compression release on the camshaft so we should find a few missing pieces they definitely didn't want this coming up they've all got the red thread lock okay so then to them probably all the same yep don't sing good it's probably still smaller than here coz there's always something left in there definitely some filings in the bottom of the Sun and all what do we have here there we go the weights that I was talking about broken off sits just under on the camshaft just under the main gear and hopefully everything else is fine obviously then these pieces fall off they could potentially get all mashed up in the in the gears but yes I think it's probably been sat at the bottom humph okay so we have to begin with the oil slinger seems to be in good shape so so the governor as well as you can see we've got these weights here we then have the camshaft there and I've seen people to try and pull them out without aligning them first you probably will pull it out eventually but it's much easier if you align the two timing marks because then it means that there's going to be no pressure on the lobes so it should lift straight out there we go and yes this is where the weight would have been yeah so roughly that's how it would have been as you can see the weight is out when it's running it flies out and then that's the flat edge on here so it's nice and smooth and then when it closes it means the engine is not running or just starting up and it allows the valve just to to open that so yeah I don't know why they fail but it's in a few with the same problem also one thing to note is this is the one without the oil pump so we don't have the notch in here you might get the one anyway but it's more important if you if you do have the whole pump to to make sure you get the camshaft with the the knotch otherwise you may have to pump the oil which will break the engine you also have the cam followers tap it's whatever you want to call them just here now you actually do tend to get new ones of these anyway with a new camshaft so I don't need to worry about mixing them up but I'll just keep them in there for now because otherwise the push rods will fall through and so then we have the gasket which I need to buy you can see it's in pretty bad shape and I'll also change the sump sail as well and of course the camshaft itself so yeah this sealing hey I think it's always worth changing this if you're going to take it off you clean all that out okay let's go and buy some parts that's all the parts ordered now and he's clean the Sun pout so that's what I'm doing here I've got the heated pressure cleaner just warming up [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] okay so that's much cleaner heated punch washer that's removed all the oil as you saw I also cleaned the dipstick which is much cleaner and yeah I've started to remove the gasket material around here now sometimes I do remove it before I put it in the washer but I find that if you if you clean it first then remove the gasket material it doesn't all get stuck in there and you can spray easily blow out the air line and also you don't get all the bits of gasket in the in the parts washers filter so it doesn't really matter which way you do it so I'm going to continue and remove the remaining gasket [Laughter] [Music] [Music] okay so gay rights all of the gasket material scrapes off this side as well it's a little bit tricky around here when starter motor is and it's always possible to get bits of old gasket inside the engine so why tend to do is just spray over the airline get anything to blow out now the parts have arrived this is the new camshaft this is the old camshaft and you can see this one has the compression release this one's lost it and actually the pin that little pin which I found in the oil that was the power which had failed basically just snapped off that holds the weight on so anyway that is the replacement the new one has the notch cut into it that's for the oil pump the old one doesn't this engine doesn't have an oil pump but I suppose Bruce and stratton about it and they say that if you order the part for this engine you'll get the the one with the notch so apparently it will all work fine I also got the seal part number seven nine five 387 of course double check to make sure it's the right one for your engine if you're doing the same job and I have the gaskets as well the camshaft part number is seven nine three eight eight zero okay so these come in the camshaft kit as well we've got two new tappets and you also do get the oil pump shaft it's just there I won't be using that obviously cuz I don't have an oil pump in tension but if your engine does have the oil pump then you can use this I guess you could reuse the old one I can't see any reason why I wouldn't do if it was in good condition but yeah you might want to change it if you get it and I'll put the new tappets in I think the reason why you get new ones is because they can wear differently on the camshaft lobes so yes I'll definitely be putting those in this is my Permatex ultra slick engine assembly loop my opinion can never really have too much assembly lubrication there we have the crucial bit just a the timing marks need to be aligned now this is the slinger and the governor it's very important that that you sits on the governor shaft just here and also in to make sure all the gears a meshing but chances are there will be anyway because if you've got this lined up that probably most will hopefully will be lined up as well but it's always worth just double-checking okay now it's the gasket and then one more visual check just to make sure everything is good okay right so we'll get the sump back on here and then I think you'll be time to put it back into the mower and then we will try and start it up and yeah well obviously make sure oil is in first then we're trying to start it up and it should hopefully have fixed the problem okay just here does that your hole that's for the application so you definitely don't wanna block that off ouch it open the sail would go down far enough anyway but on some engines it is possible to actually knock the silver and a little bit too far as you can see that hold is still there the seal does actually have a natural stopping point anyway so it's now ready to be fitted or actually this is where the pump will be on quite a few models actually if yours does have that then it's definitely easiest to remove that pump first and then put the sump on and then put the pump back together afterwards because otherwise you'll never align it [Music] I'm quite pleased with how the Sun went on sometimes you've gotta line things so yes it went straight on surf they must have been just right but I still used to a few checks make sure to seal it's all okay sometimes you can actually damage it when putting it in but don't think there's any problems there and yeah everything else does seem to be all good so I'm now we're gonna put the bolts back in looking at these I think I probably numb up a bit first and I have got some more red thread locked so I reapply a bit on each one [Music] [Music] [Applause] okay so that's the valves all set before I put the cover on its gonna put a bit more assembly the application on just on all the moving parts and and I'd actually did put it on the end of the push rods as well which go into the tappets because I've taken those out and I have completely set these from scratch nice so I've got quite a bit of old so they can scratch off first [Music] [Music] [Music] all right so that's the engine all back in so next thing put some oil in and I think I probably will clean it all up it's all a bit dirty and oxidized so yeah it can definitely look better than this so in a post mortem and then we'll see if it will start [Music] yeah it's just a minimum but a bit more in okay there we go right so I'm gonna try and put the cover on shroud I usually want to run them without it being bolted down this really is just a test though just see if it starts really because that was the problem it's a starting problem more than the running problem okay so everything's plugged back in all the fuel we've got the wires in just the throttle in after hole because the screw is missing will it work or will we have more problems we'll soon find out at smokey well I didn't have well the smoke showed up on camera but I was totally expecting it because what's happened is someone has removed the rocker cover before and all the oil had gone down back of the muffler I just forgot to mention it so yes it's absolutely fine it's not coming out the exhaust is just coming from the exhaust and that runs really well so that it's almost chop done just got to clean up a bit get some bolts and stuff and then we will have a good working engine just the camshaft with the compression release [Music] [Music] you
