batlin billy's entering their fifth and final preseason game they'll be leading into a bye week next week before district play begins and it's a rivalry night as the batlin billies will be taking on the bernie greyhounds tonight the billy's come in at three and one suffering a tough loss last week to the wimberley texans the bernie greyhounds enter tonight at two and two coming off a win versus sweetwater last week i'll be joined tonight by scott emel shortly he's down on the field for some pregame festivities coach tim kaiman not with us tonight he's playing golf in houston texas and we'll probably get an update on that somewhere throughout the ball game also looking for an update from volleyball volleyball team on the road tonight starting district play at davenport high school and but it's football the weather has turned a little bit cooler this week and so it's starting to feel a little bit more like fall we are officially in the fall season so cooler temps we'll see some long sleeve shirts out there tonight the baton billy's looking to finish the preseason with a win tonight over the bernie greyhounds fredericksburg has beaten bernie the last two years it was in overtime two years ago and then last year in bernie what a fantastic game a 25-24 thriller coach lance moffatt has called it one of his top 10 all-time football games as a coach the excitement was there in bernie last year so expectation tonight is that this should be a very good ball game lots of bernie across the way lots of purple and white they always bring a good contingent to this rivalry and lots it a rival against the bernie greyhounds uh you know years ago it was the kervil tyvee antlers and in the last 10 to 12 years it has become more so the bernie greyhounds if you've had an opportunity to attend a volleyball game or a basketball game against bernie you know exactly what we're talking about well last week fredericksburg coming up short against the wimberley texans wimberley a highly state-ranked team the billy's only down by one at halftime 14-13 the final score ended up 30-16 and would have to say turnovers were probably the difference in that game and a couple of crucial penalties down the stretch but fredericksburg turning the ball over three times and bernie able to capitalize and get the win stats from last week rushing yards jesse leija led the way as he has done weekend and week out throughout the preseason he had 20 carries for 87 yards cole emel eight for 17. mason ray had four for 36 and john fritsch with four carries for three yards passing cole emil 13 of 25 no interceptions 180 total yards and a touchdown he's been very efficient as quarterback receiving end mason ray had five catches for 53 yards leighton beyer had three catches for 60 yards jesse leija had two catches for 52 yards on defense logan metzger would lead the way with eight tackles james sibera and gary seidenberger along with yuri estrada all three had five tackles and right behind them luke decuffa with four it was a very strong defensive performance on the evening although we did give up 30 points a couple of those coming from big plays last friday night against the wimberley texans we're at home tonight for our final preseason game a bye week next week and then we'll be on the road the following week players of the week from last week against the wimberley texans and we'll look at jv 9th grade scout team as far and as well as the varsity good samaritan you can see there on your screen the jv crew it was aidan neisel and elijah quay for the jv last week joseph is off hitting that golf ball around somewhere in houston and uh it is a rivalry tonight uh coach emil and you've kind of been on all sides of this you've been a player you've been a coach and now we get you up here in the broadcast booth a little bit yeah i tell you what coach came and i really appreciate you you know going to houston hitting the ball all around there and you know i get stuck up here which is kind of awesome no i'm just kidding but you know the reality is this has been a big rivalry and nobody talks about kerrville it's been a big deal for a long time but but bernie over the last 20 to 30 years has been a bigger deal and uh when you look at this thank you it's always been a pretty good ride i can't say it's been dirty i can't be it's strap them all night i don't think it's been you know a bad rivalry it's they've probably got the upper hand on us over on the overall numbers i don't know but they got twice as many kids too you're exactly right i think the the head-to-head in football yeah we've won 18 they've won 20. so it's very close and we've won the last two years of course in overtime two years ago and then last year was the 25-24 game so so it should be a very exciting ball game tonight the batman billy's in all red with white numerals white trousers and the bernie greyhounds across the way in white jerseys with purple numerals and gray trousers fredericksburg won the toss and elected to receive if i didn't catch that right out of the corner of my eye we were kind of talking about some other things at that point in time but the billy's will be receiving uh they'll be moving from left to right as we look at them from the home press box here tonight or if you're a directional kind of guy east to west yeah what a beautiful night i tell you what not you know it's not hot it's not cold it's not windy and it's not still so it's perfect night for the spectators and hopefully a great night for football well you know fall came around on what wednesday and the temperature dropped just a little bit and like you said it starts to feel a little bit more like football season when you get rid of those 95 plus wake up when it's 48 temperatures there we go bernie's put a foot into the ball and up in the air it'll be caught at the 9 yard line by nary and he's going to take it out to about the 25 and that's where that fredericksburg offense will set up shop first down and 10 as we get this game underway defensively has uh lost quite a few players from last year and uh we'll see you know see how fredericksburg comes out first down in 10 the billy's are going to split one out wide to the left and one to the right cole emel in the shotgun leija in the backfield bring a man in motion handoff goes to leija and jesse will start to the right spin and then fall forward for a couple of yards it'll be a gain of three uh leija been a nice surprise this season coach oh yeah i'll tell you what that was a great seal number seven will sam darren you know great job four four yards guess what four times three is twelve and that's down exactly see what happens second down and six leija in the backfield emel in the shotgun three men split left nobody to the right takes the snap handoff to leija he's going to bounce it outside and pick up some yards and then the old turf monster is going to get him at about the 42-yard line but first down as uh leija with a good carry old gt you guys that used to play that was gt and we kicked their butt right there so that was good stuff three men split left emil's going to take the snap handoff again on the left side short yardage about a yard on that carry there for leija you know scott that's kind of what i've looked forward to this week is a little different perspective you've got an eye for this game and and so does tim cayman but it's going to be nice to hear a little bit different uh language a little bit different perspective from somebody who's put a lot of time into watching film and coaching and playing so we're glad to have you here tonight it's totally different being back up in the press box rather than you know being down there as a parent or listening to everybody else that thinks they know whatever you know what's going on but and you know that some of them they do second down and nine emil gonna drop back looking to pass throws has a man across the middle but i think they'd already marked him down he had four on the carry that's a first down great job of falling forward i tell you you know i really think it was even still a bad spot i think he had an extra yard i think so now they've spotted it back it looks like they're not gonna give him the first down or are they they're gonna mark it a first down so puts the ball at the gotta be the 37 two men tell you what an old football coach and i know david mayfield just takes them in there he's loving it when your offensive line can control the defensive line and linebackers like they're doing right now it's it's we're going to have it we're going to have a shot just ball control and here we go and you know i think cole and the receivers are good enough to have some possession and we'll see what happens i'm with you coach i really like to see him run that ball fritsch checks into the ball game for leija give him a little bit of a breather two men split left one to the right frich to the right high snap emel's going to pull it down and try to make something out of nothing but he's just going to throw it away as a tough snap there a little high looked like it designed gt to the left or counter counter tray to the left and cole at least was able to handle the snap that was high and threw the ball away and there was no alignment downfield so it's second and tenth or third and four third and three regroup exactly didn't lose any yardage there kept them close to that first down marker trying to see look like fritz will stay in the game cole kind of telling him hey you're over iso our back that was motioning which was number 24 which lit their linebacker up sam baron did a great job as a guard and some movement so first down billy's fridge has been a nice addition coming those guys are they're seeing that and you'll see a big play likely out of the tight end or that motion the motion full back sometimes we're going to hit a same route second down they're going to give him two on the carry charlie johnson will stay out here to the right mason ray to the left fritsch in the backfield emil in the shotgun or the pistol what you want to call that little play action looking for the end zone and trying to find charlie johnson and just a little overthrown charlie kind of got hung up at the line of scrimmage and needed about four or five more yards yeah cole's got to do a better job giving him a chance on that that's a one-on-one play and you know i mean there's a lot of times you fear an interception but you gotta trust your receiver and uh you know he just overthrew it there's no other way of saying it second or excuse me third down and eight ball just inside the 25. fritsch will stay in the backfield one man split right everyone else in tight now they'll bring him in emel looking to pass plenty of time good coverage mason ray catchable ball for mason and uh just off his fingertips it's going to be fourth down for the battle of that's a tough billies there it'll be interesting to see what we do here it looks like we're going to go for it you know that's that's marginal i mean you're talking about a long field goal and if you attempt the field goals you give them that extra seven yards if you miss so i think this is a great call by the staff and going for it here we go going to split three men to the right or one excuse me to the left make them keep throwing and catching it and you know that's okay just tackle well second down and one now handoff coming this way as mason ray and very there to make the tackle but it'll be a first down for the greyhounds i think more importantly on that offensive drive coaches we kept the ball and kept that bernie offense off the field as well good sustained drive we didn't get points but we saw some good things first down and 10. galloway looking to pass and uh incomplete as uh boy he just threw that one on a rope intended for number five justin moore you know he did and there's a good example he's got to throw it he's got to throw an accurate pass and they got to catch it he's got a heck of a cannon but the reality is you got to throw and catch it keep it in front of you and tackle are there to stop it first man there was at de cuppa i love it i love it quick screen that wimberly killed us on last week guess what coach waller got him coached up and made the adjustment they are bringing out how about that fourth and thirteen for the greyhounds and they'll be forced to punt mason ray back to receive at about his own 29 yard line great job by the defense short punt gonna hit at the 39 and then take a bernie roll down inside the 20 to the 19. that's a heck of a burning rule yeah boy a big one as uh looked like a bad punt they got a 20-yard i was hoping it was going to take a turn for the sideline over there and go out of bounds really quick we're late in the first quarter of play 4 40 to go no score thus far in the ball game fredericksburg comes in at three and one bernie greyhounds at two and two the final preseason game for the baton billy's as though they lead into a bye week next week before opening district play mason ray split to the left two men out here to the right two in the backfield with emil remarkable remarkable good snap handoff to lehigh leija is gonna try that left side over there now cutting back he breaks a tackle now he's got some room cole trying to set a block for him over there and laya just keeps spinning and churning and he'll have the first down at the 33-yard line he went a long way for that 13-yard excuse whatever that's one hell of an effort there's no other way of saying that that's jesse layout right there they're going to give him the 34 and very quickly under center emil gonna pitch coming this way again it's lay hawk keeps feeding in the ball a two-yard game this time just trying to keep that bernie defense on their heels i like that but you know we rush to the liner scrimmage we do a lot of stuff but jesse has just run a 100 yard sprint on that you know sometimes it's like hey maybe we need to slow down and rest our guys because tell you what i think i like us up front right now against bernie i like our front our offensive line against him well that senior laden line has definitely been a factor thus far this season leija in the backfield behind him emily in the pistol and off again to leija right straight up the middle just follows those good blocks he's up to the 40-yard line that'll bring up third down and four what that was a good job by rusty price on the left side along with jordy hernandez as the right guard sounds weird but he did a great job on the linebacker i'm assuming cole brings those guys a breakfast taco every once in a while yeah he better yeah he sure will be better because they protect him real well two men split to the right we've got just about three minutes left to play here in the first quarter no score second possession of the game for the billys [Music] bring a man in motion that's charlie johnson kimmel looking to pass throws he finds charlie and it'll be a first down at the 46-yard line to move the chains great job by charlie johnson just throttling down in the zone and cole finding his own great pass protection there wasn't anybody within three yards of gold leija going to come out to uh catch his breath just a little bit as billy's make a couple of adjustments mason ray going to be split out here wide to the right who is who's in the back back there is that cyber 21 trying to see if they yeah burger did they move uh 25 it's the brothers they're the wade yeah the wade brothers 24 and 25. a little bit of a high snap handoff to ryder wade and uh boy good hard running there's four yards for you coach as uh yeah you know both those guys just run hard that's tremendous effort actually the whole football team coaches need to be proud of the effort they put forth may not be the fastest strongest or whatever but they put forth effort and that's all you can ask do it as a team yeah amen came in second down one man split wide to the right stephen wade in the backfield gonna bring charlie johnson in just a little bit handoff to stephen wade this time he breaks a tackle or two across the 50. that'll bring up third down and five remember for the billys didn't see him run through and besides that might have had a big play but 25 for them made a good play stephen wade checks out as leija comes back into the ball game leija will settle in to the left of emil two men right two left nicole looking to pass setting up a little screen to leija he catches it he may go coach he may go off he's got to split two defenders that's all right they're going to take him down inside the 10. look at those lines look at those lines and effort out there randall look at those all those linemen down there they're right there with the ball trying to keep that push alive it's going to be first down and goal inside the 10 before the billy's big job much i mean coach tim's really i mean i know all the coaches do a great job i don't know how long they work but i'm just telling you the effort these kids put out if you're if line emil and off on the little sweep and we'll lose a couple on that one it's going to be second down and goal from the 11. unfortunately we were out man there kobe hunter and he called saw cole signaling along with number 71. we were out man they walked the guy up and that wouldn't work so we lose two on that carry that'll put the ball at the 11 yard line and boy there went the first quarter the football oh i'll tell you what well the strong suit of our team is offensive well offense defensive line linebackers you know they do a great job and we've been able to control the football and as need to and and opening space for both leija and fritch all evening long you know and then the wade you know wades came in there and javi ran it a few times and you know when you get if cole you know if you can ever get his leg right and he can become a threat to run too you know with what they like to do with that reed stuff right i think we're going to be good when district comes around and the big deal is when you're standing toe to toe with teams like this and you've got an offensive line that can do what we're doing we're doing the right thing and the kids aren't turning the ball over i don't know you know i i don't know statistics i don't look at stats but i know this we don't turn the ball over much so we don't throw interceptions and knock on wood you know we don't we don't fumble and if we just keep doing that we stay in games we play great defense with the people that we do and coach wilder they put them in the right spots we're gonna have a shot in a lot of games so i i really was you know the first half ten to six you know my a lot of people look at that say that's a boring game that's a great football yeah you know it's a great football well i'm telling you what it seems like those first two quarters just flew by but i'm with you i like to see those running backs uh do their work and and then you know allow cole to come in and hit a pass or two here and there just to keep them honest but uh well leija has done a fantastic job this evening and fridge uh has done well uh they're late in the second quarter some good hard running from him uh you know the the couple of times they're just coming through that line of scrimmage and just laying somebody over picking up a few more yards i got a very good friend that said you know i um i'm gonna mention who he is but he said you know you need four yards i'll get you four you need seven i'll get you four and fritsch is that i mean he can get you what but he's a bulldog and he's going to go get you what he needs to get you and leija is the jet and leija may get you one but he may get you 99 the next time yeah and you know that's a pretty neat combination when you got a line like that you got a couple of threats you know you get threats at receiver and you know and cole just manages the game and again if you don't turn the ball over and i keep coming back to the defense you know the defense just don't give up big plays and guess what people have to beat you just don't beat yourself yeah and i really really like this football team i like the chemistry you know are we the most talented football team i've ever seen no absolutely not but are we a good football team absolutely yeah i would agree 100 you know the chemistry is there it is and you can see it yeah and that's that's a good thing to see well a couple of score reports to pass along to you uh from around the football world and then we'll get to some of the things going on around the billy nation but lam passes badgers trailing gatesville late in the second quarter 19-10 ingram over le prior 34-12 alamo heights and wimberley tied 0-0 at halftime ozona 14 brady zero salado 28 taylor six and uh harper leading big late in the second quarter over menard 26-0 as uh chad's entering i love it the moose is loose i have to tell you a funny story real quick he was he was a center on i guess 2002 and so when they wanted to go quarterback sneak and go get the first down we go get it yeah you know quarterback just goosed him and hey here we went we called it moose and mo it was moose and moe and well jay my nephew was his quarterback and chad was the center and it was moose and moe and here we go yep there you go pretty consistent there well mason punchers we roll right into that good segue there 28-0 mason up on wildcats only trailing at halftime by a score of 6-0 we had a report also from coach jason ramer the the volleyball team opening district play tonight falling in three to davenport cross country was in wimberley this week i believe both the boys teams varsity and jv ended up second place overall winner in the varsity division was jorge lopez for the batman billy's and uh the girls win varsity and jv as well they had like three or four in the top didn't they have three four medalists yeah and i'm not going to call all their names i know corona was right up there at the top and uh but coach dan aldrich they've got one more meet left leading in to district in bandera in a couple of weeks i think they're at piper next week the new high school in uh comal and then they'll be in bandera in two weeks for district meet tennis action last week we on saturday we played divine and uvaldi got wins against both of those teams we went back to district play on tuesday got a win over canyon lake we're on the courts here tomorrow morning at eight o'clock for a big one against the bernie greyhounds we'll see him again tomorrow morning our jv was in action yesterday very competitive but lost overall but some good tennis by our younger jv kids varsity plays in the morning at eight against bernie and we'll follow that up with a non-district opponent uh north side uh san antonio marshall will be coming in about 11 30 12. you got a busy couple of weeks lots of tennis going on you know and and of course going gonna brag on them a little we're 15 and three on the season we're three and one in district play three of the top ten teams in the state of texas in our district uh bernie is number one in the state wemberly is number two and uh we're sitting down there we were seven we lost to wimberley dropped two points to number nine so yeah it's just a very uh tough district and on any given day uh anyone can beat anyone well i'm gonna tell you this it's not by accident you know because you were just inducted into the hall of fame you know the whole the whole honor deal and you know i can remember getting hired here in 1997 for those of you that don't know i taught here from 1997 until i guess 2010 and randall king's been one of the best people i mean and i mean that randall and he's not just going to be sitting here and i think everybody in the community would say this one of the best people and he's one hell of a coach obviously for what he i mean just look at what he does with kids and ask anybody that's ever coached you know the people that that don't know what goes into coaching and the time and effort that you put in and every coach right exactly every coach but just the success you've had it's not by accident it absolutely isn't well thank you scott i appreciate that you know you and i shared a classroom many years a lot of years teaching history yeah u.s history and uh thank you kind words i do appreciate that that is quite an honor that uh was a of towards the end of the ball game we talk time and time again about effort effort effort and i felt like those kids 100 percent stayed with it through the end of that ball game tonight scott and you know some of them playing through some injuries some of them playing through a little bit of pain but no give up in those kids right down to the wire and trying to drive that ball down the field and get some points on the board there at the end got to be proud of them as a as a dad you got to be proud of them as a as a coach and uh staff and now they've got time to get over some of those injuries and get set and ready for some district play for the real for the real deal which is district you know everybody wants to win every game and you know the reality is it was great to see you know it just ticks you off to lose i mean those kids are ticked off the coaches are ticked off everybody in the stands ticked off but the effort that everybody put forth and i'm going to tell you what i just watched i watched handshake you know what this is a rivalry and teams they don't like each other and i just watched people that have been playing against each other for four years you know the seniors right and i just watched a bunch of the seniors i'll name rashaan because rashawn i've seen rashawn galloway play and that guy's a good athlete yeah and you know what he was a tremendous sportsman he walked up to not just my son but probably three different kids that he's played for or played against all these years and you could just see there's a mutual respect you know among all of them so uh yeah the loss the 33 to 17 loss let's just hope let's get on a roll against burn it and guess what guess what we'll see what happens from there yeah well i i like our team i like the effort i like the preseason and and you know as coaches it it really comes down to district and and the playoffs are going to be destined through what you do during district play and did these games help you get ready absolutely for that season and you know we talk a lot about tennis and how we play a pretty challenging pre-season schedule to get ready for district i think we've played a fairly challenging pre-season to get ready for districts and we played well and we got our dings and you got the you know like k yansky could he have come back he might have been able to it's not worth it right he'll be back and he's a big contributor to the success of the team but there was somebody that had to fill in over these last two games that made a contribution that's gonna somewhere down the road that's gonna help us and same thing with the seidenberger he's going to be back well there were people you know the i look at the wade kit you know the way they got in there and they scrapped and they clawed and they played well and they were in a backup role to him well they stepped up and you're going to have you're going to have kids like that that are going to be successful because they were in games earlier that they might not have been in as much you know as they would have been so while you hate injuries and you hate adversity what what's going to come out of it in the coming weeks is going to be a big plus for the batman yes and it's going to make them stronger for it and i think we mentioned it somewhere early in the ball game these kids have chemistry they're a team and they're all pulling in the same direction and that that means a lot and well we look forward to burn it in two weeks so we get a week off next week i do believe i heard rumor we're hosting a game next friday night oh are we right wall and shiner maybe out to double check on that but there may be a game here in billy stadium next friday night if uh your football fan want to get out and watch a little football on friday night wall defeated mason a couple of weeks ago so they've got it they've got a pretty good team but your battling billies will be entering district play in two weeks they'll start things out with uh burn it and uh that schedule it'll be a tough schedule but i think these coaches and these kids will be ready for district in two weeks we'll be healthy and this preseason will pay off as we head down the road totally coach emil i certainly appreciate you filling in tonight for tim kahneman it's it's welcome back to him and hey i'll be back in the stands and that'll be about it well we enjoyed your perspective appreciate it uh as a somebody who's been down there in the trenches as a player and as a coach uh it's just a keen eye for things and and i know you probably could have added a lot more in there but yeah there probably would have been a few more adjectives but you know but yeah oh yeah yes sir i tell you what has been good well we appreciate you billy's fall
