homecoming coronation [Music] okay [Applause] know first up our classic 2025 freshman girl is anthony garcon angry is the daughter of chad and jamie jargon and is a multi-sport athlete who plays basketball soccer and violence travels she is also an accomplished student receiving a honor roll in the outstanding student award ave is an active member of her community as well participating in the national charity league fca young life and her oath ill church [Applause] [Music] activity is planning for tug walker he wants everyone to follow his instagram feed at walter lakers next up is our sophomore girl rest emily carr emily is the daughter of darren emergency of heart emily is proud to say she has gone this whole year without repeating an outfit and owns 29 squishmallow toys she is great at giving advice and enjoys hanging out with her friends painting baking and thrift shopping the sporting evening is frank davis son of frank and kathleen davis frank plays through the jv charter football team and enjoys spending his three times our junior girl representative is kennedy holcomb kennedy is the daughter of robert and janine holton kennedy participates in varsity chair leadership council environmental club business professionals of america and has been an fccla officer for four years kennedy would also like everyone to know she's in aries and absolutely loves to go shopping sporting candidate is [Applause] [Applause] eric also plays basketball and cycles in the very short amount of times at home likes to watch movies and finally for our class of 2022 senior representatives our first senior girl representative is kendall skipper kendall is the daughter of ben and katherine skipper she is a three-year letterman for charger girls basketball and the defensive mvp kendall also participates in the leadership council nhs and he's perfected the ultimate oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe in her food kendall enjoys painting spending way too much money on starbucks and mary's tacos and forcing braxton to bring her starbucks from mary's tacos she plans on studying architecture and civil engineering at texas tech university next fall distorting is braxton bird son of brad and clinton braxton plays basketball for the chargers and has received the awards as district offensive mvp and making the express moves by the way all-over team braxton also participates in the leadership council and would like everyone to know that means smoke connor vocal innovates he enjoys spending every waking moment hitting days and babies braxton plans to settle finance and play basketball at a university he decides to commit to escodia our next senior role representative is lacey asher today he's the daughter of wes and michelle asher lacy is the president of ffa and a member of the bisd student advisory council lacey enjoys playing soccer entering her doodles into art competitions and watching avatar of the last airbender she plans to study kinesiology with a focus in sports medicine in hopes of becoming a physical therapist one day the sporting lacie it's dj bowling steven and heather obama ej is co-president of choir in theater a national thespian and played jack gordon in the chess production of the importance of being friends dj's proudest accomplishments are beating the end of japan and getting a girlfriend dj enjoys star wars windows hanging out with the goals and making cases he plans on serving a mission for the church of jesus christ going to college at byu or byu and being happy next up is senior girl riley burkey daughter of russell berkey and mama b riley is a four-year track fighter man and three-year soccer letterman and is the parliamentarian of student council riley loves playing spike ball hiking and playing running back for the class of 2022 powder puff team riley can jump her car in an impressive one minute and 41 seconds and has survived almost 18 years of living in her older sister recent shadow she plans to run track collegiately by competing in we have teflon and an active member of the student council and bernie buddies maddox is the king of mosh pits in school dances and is proud of that riley birthday to the hometown freshman year maddox enjoys singing in the shower and playing pokemon go he hopes to major in business at a university is olivia farias daughter of victor and jennifer olivia is a member of the varsity soccer team student council a leader of fca has received the nhs service award and is most definitely coldplay's number one fan olivia enjoys singing being active watching the sky discussing the curious lives of orca whales and consistently getting destroyed in mario part by jacob russia she plans to either pursue a career in music or study marine life in the future escorting olivia is big juicy jacob gretchen jacob is the son of wayne and paula jacob is a captain of the varsity football team a letterman in three sports a member of this home council an fca leader in an eight-time locker room spikeball champion jacob enjoys golfing fishing hanging out with his friends and consistently destroying olivia and mario he plans to play college baseball and attend chiropractic school our final girl representative is aubrey wilson aubry has participated in charger cheer for the past three years and is the varsity skills officer for this year aubrey enjoys not listening to music while driving obsessively cleaning her car and making frequent trips to chick-fil-a she plans to attend the university of mississippi and major in [Music] carson business for our charger football team and was awarded first team all different d-liners last year harkin is very proud to say he was voted on for homecoming and loves taking short walks on the beach and drinking sodas with no carbonation he plans to play football at a university and now to announce our winners with this year's homecoming court first up our company for this year is carson shorts responders as well as elected officials and bernie isd administration the students designed and created the metal signs to honor those who lost their lives on september 11 2001 a job well done september is childhood cancer awareness month the bernie high school gold out games were a huge success bhs sold all of their gold out t-shirts and had to order more the greyhounds played the game in honor of reid neil and raised money for pediatric cancer research a special shout out goes to our student volunteers who did a great job making this the best gold out ever the fabra elementary school all pro dads held their first meeting of the school year recently all pro dads is a wonderful program that helps parents interact and teach their children positive character traits such as confidence integrity and kindness this is a fantastic program champion high school senior sabrina kelly completed the first draft of her full-length novel sabrina will now work on refining the novel as well as complete the second draft and outline the sequel we can't wait to read it congratulations the bernie isd student advisory council held their first meeting this week with superintendent dr thomas price the council is comprised of student leaders from bernie and champion high school the group discussed bernie isd's long-range plan and more at the meeting champion high school will hold their 2021 it's high school football on the chargers sports network on deck tonight the four no champion chargers hosting the ocampo rice birds who come in with a record of 3-1 and they are one of the top 4a programs in the state alongside kerry barboza i'm brian freeman ready for this game between the chargers and the rice bars this is a final non-district game with the season for champion heading into a bye week a chance to be 5-0 but kerry the work is cut out for the chargers here tonight facing a very good el campo football program yeah very good program as you say and also a couple good running backs reuben owens john jonathan uh davis also in there and uh reuben owens committed to texas he's a five-star recruit uh he's nationally ranked running back depending on which service you look at he's top five of everyone that i saw so he's a great running back and uh chargers are gonna have their hands full trying to stop him and we'll see what the game plan is to try to get them to throw a little bit make them more uncomfortable running that ball and see if they go through the air to try to move that ball but yeah it's a it should be a pretty good game pretty good game now you see with the coin toss taking place one of the champion captains is their quarterback carson kaiser the senior is out again as he was last week did not play in the win for the chargers at home over laredo united got hurt in the united south game in laredo two different games there as the rice burns will defer the kickoff to the second half which means we'll see the offense first so kaiser out again tonight carrie that means we'll see the second strange start for jordan ballen who looked very good last week yeah threw for uh four touchdowns last week and had a great game as a sophomore just his first start and they're kind of banged up right now and they have a sophomore running back that starts sophomore quarterback krause the receiver is a sophomore they all had pretty good games last week we saw the captains ryan lehrer out there he was banged up he's going to sit out tonight davis pike's also sitting out tonight so seven starters i believe are out for the chargers so uh it's all about getting them ready they go to buy next week they're trying to get ready for district and they they should have most if not all backed by district is what they're hoping but yeah jordan ballad a great game as a sophomore and we talked about it last week he was on varsity baseball team as a freshman he was the mvp of the varsity baseball team so he's a good athlete and he's not afraid of the moment played great last week very poised and they're looking for more of the same from him this week ryan brandon coming off a monster game last week in the win over united is back to return the opening kickoff coming from diego gutierrez again the chargers trying to stay unbeaten on the season of perfect 4-0 wins over stevens macarthur and two teams out of laredo united south and united mentioned brandon had a great game last week fair catch called for made by the chargers taken in by cole rija and bernie champion will start at around its own 32-yard line a look at the numbers for jordan ballen last week first career start 32 of 43 passing 346 yards and four touchdowns not big in stature carry but big in performance last week yeah and like i said some of their offense they have to roll him out of the pocket because he's only about five seven or so so he can't see over some of his alignment so they have to roll him out so he has some clear line of vision but uh very effective and he's a good runner he can run he doesn't mind doing that he's a tough kid and he's very poised for his sophomore age and a quick penalty as they're moving the ball back it appears our head official greg dockery signaled something here now they're moving the ball the other way this flag was against el campo belief for an illegal substitution so first and ten chargers at the 37-yard line [Music] and this is the quarterback jordan ballen the sophomore came into the program as a wide receiver he stands 5-7 carson kaiser is 6-3 and the first play is a run for riha then loses yardage in first down reha had a great game in laredo ran for 180 yards in laredo also had a touchdown as well last week that buck 80 came against united south on the road 63 yards rushing last week of the win over united reha again and the rice birds are there coming into the tackle for el campo is d.k norman two plays to start the game here carrie and champion finds itself in third and long yeah and i think they're going to get backed up well there's a penalty let's see what it is maybe they're going to get a little bit of help here five yards it looks like maybe ocampo was off size didn't see when the flag was thrown but champion will take it first penalty of the game against the rice birds her second penalty at baker pardon [Applause] and attacker for loss el campo all over that coming up with a stop there for the rice burns jacob lopez a first-team all-district linebacker a year ago and it is third along here for champion and that pocket didn't hold up very long balance sitting in there and it started to collapse he tried to bail out and run forward but just know where to go that time so so far for the chargers minus six yards of offense on this opening possession and the ricebirds are playing press coverage here here's the blitz ballon on the run flag is in again and as possible el campo was offsides again the flag came from the far side of the field and we'll wait to see what happens here after the third down the play was short of the sticks they had more penalty yards their offenses gained more on penalty yards than they have on actual yards and that's going to be five yards a third penalty for the rice birds on this drive [Applause] [Music] you heard kerry mention it seven players out including kaiser alex rodriguez the team's top tailback at a big target at receiver davis pike with an a injury ballon over the middle it's cox flag is into the secondary after the catch was made by ryan brandon flag thrown back to the 40-yard line [Music] and what has been a penalty-filled first champion possession the fourth penalty of the game with his sticks brandon got up a little gimpy there he's trying to walk it off but great catch great hole that's going to be hold on the defense though decline didn't take the game but [Music] it's a gain of 15 yards there for the chargers talked about the game big game for brandon last week 12 catches more than 160 yards receiving three touchdowns including a 95-yarder first down brie ha bounces to his right got tripped up and there is lopez again for the rice burns and that'll bring up second down and 11. [Music] the thing about brandon is is of course what makes him so effective is davis pike's usually on the other side and so defenses have to worry about both those guys we'll see how long the reichsports figure out that rice is or pike's not playing and are they going to maybe double team brandon we'll see from the el capo 42 ballon lost that complete brandon again angles from the sidelines out at the 36. that's good for six yards to make third down manageable [Music] [Applause] and again you saw it last week carrie when davis pike left the game early with an injury ballon looked ryan brandon's way early and often 12 catches last friday yeah had a great great possession guy just getting first downs for him left and right and really and krauss he had a great game as a sophomore too he was looking for crossy as well quite a bit the chargers have to reach to 31 for a first down rehab motions out of the backfield and drops a swing pass another penalty marker thrown on the play right now with the stanzas fourth down at five that was kind of almost dangerous for canon brooks almost got popped but incomplete and el campo is going to take that penalty and force this into third down and 20. well they'll get the down back but a long way to go being behind the chains against this good team this a charger offense averaging just south of 40 points a game put up 42 last week in the win over united after the 15 yard penalty the chargers tasked with having to reach the right spurs 31 to convert ballon lofting that deep and it's intercepted picked off by reuben owens well we know he's a great offensive player but he's also playing a little bit of safety back there and kind of just caught that ball like a like a center fielder and that's not a bad interception because that's almost like a punt basically without any kind of return so they still have 78 yards to go but uh not not a bad throw there so the game's first turnover comes with 9 16 to go here in the first quarter and for the chargers just their second turnover of the season the only other one came in the 56 to nothing route of 6a san antonio macarthur and here is this run heavy high scoring el campo offense to work at the 22 and this is owens reuben owens who just had the pick picks up 11 yards in a first down he's got 764 yards coming in in four games 13 touchdowns he's averaging about 11 yards a carry so every time he touches the ball he gets you a first down basically think about this ruben owens has played in 15 career games 13 times he's gone over the century mark and in those 15 games he's already eclipsed 2200 yards rushing he's only a junior on first half flag zan run to the left and right around the 40 yard line goes steven norman if this flag is accepted it will be the fifth accepted penalty of this of the first three minutes and it's illegal procedure illegal formation rather against ocampo well chargers they're obviously aware of the running backs that el campbell has so they're going to sell out and try to stop that run the chargers defensively have been good stopping the run this season opponents are only averaging 56 yards a game but they've played past happy offenses this is the antithesis of that yeah [Music] on first and 15 owens to his right and gets the penalty yardage back in a yard more on a gain of six for reuben owens [Applause] one of the top running back recruits in the nation and when you're able to decommit from texas yeah that says how good you are and you see that cut how quick that cut was he just kind of cut on a dime and he he's looking at his video film of him he's kind of an upright runner kind of reminds me of dickerson where he just kind of runs straight up doesn't really hunch just runs straight up but he's fast and got him in a wildcat here owens has thrown some passes this year before the snap i think may have a timeout and yes time-out taken by the rice birds that is their first that it comes with 8 17 to go in the first quarter this is el capo's first possession of the game the rice birds coming off a thumping of warden last week 70 to 21 putting up well over 500 yards of offense eight rushing touchdowns a name we haven't called yet carrie is john trey davis the senior fullback he himself a highly recruited running back scored three touchdowns last week and ran for more than 200. yeah and he's he's a senior and so they they get they give both of them uh work and and what a luxury as a coach to have those types of running backs in your back field and owens has 764 yards davis has 554 yards so just both both outstanding backs and both being recruited and each running back is giving you a first down per carry you heard carrie by using obviously your name not spelled like it would be for running back harry but owens is averaging more than 11 yards an attempt while davis is more than 13 yards for kerry [Applause] riceberg staying with a wildcat owens hands it off big hole off the left side accelerating inside of midfield flying down the sidelines d.k ward touchdown el capo 68 yards for the touchdown that time uh owens was kind of eye candy he was just kind of back there he just kind of handed the ball off and uh and maybe that threw the champion defense off a little bit as wiresports kind of line up swinging gate formation here what a great run goes for 68 yards d.k ward on the wildcat play takes it in for the long touchdown and after the point after diego gutierrez who has not missed a p-a-t this year and that string continues 805 to go opening quarter el campo strikes first on top here at bernie isd stadium 7 to nothing we're back after this on the chargers sports network [Music] i'm goldberg and you're watching the charger sports drive for el campo dk ward the long touchdown and here is brandon on the kick return from the 25 brandon out to the 40-yard line they brought brandon up instead of him being the lone man back they brought him up because they're gonna if they're gonna kick just to the side like that why not see if he can do something with the ball on that that's where he was sitting so the wildcat there moments ago for el campo with reuben owens in that wildcat position he himself is such a threat that's an effective look there for el campo we saw him scoring a 68-yarder i don't think anybody thought he was going to hand it off so i think they were just focused on him and the running back just blew it open ward flying in on this play ballon harassed and taken down as he got rid of it somehow able to complete it to the 44 on a short gain as again d.k norman was coming in to hit him that was a pretty good throw there by ballon he was running away backwards that's gonna be on uh another off-sides call i guess if you're chatterell ocampo's head coach if you're going to commit penalties don't do it for anything more than five yards so far they haven't and it hasn't hurt them so [Applause] they'll take the gain and not to pass on first and five ballon incomplete looking for ryan brandon brings up second down and five think about this number so the chargers offensively have 29 yards of offense but they picked up 25 yards and penalties [Music] and that throw we saw that a lot last week probably about 15 to 20 throws of balance we're just that short five yard out it just just getting them comfortable moving them out of their pocket and it was effective for them on second to five option play ballon's gonna keep it gang tackled after a gain of a yard then on the stop there for the riceberg's carson whittington and what i'm picked up on here early on carrie eight in the box constantly here for el paso for el campo yeah and that was great defense there because really balan didn't even have the chance to pitch that ball that it was an option like you said but there was no he didn't even have time to to move the ball and think about pitching it he just had to eat it again press coverage eight in the box for the rice birds here's the blitz ballon incomplete off the hands of ryan brandon threw that behind him and it looks like that coach kaiser will send in the punting unit and normally carson is the is the punter it looks like krause he's going to be out there but carson kaiser is a punter and so the defense has to always be aware of the fact that he could throw out of that punting formation but looks like they're going to straight away punt it krafty punted twice last week in the win over laredo united angles zap out of bounds and does not give owens a chance to return [Applause] and that will go down as a 32-yard punt a short possession there for the chargers three and out only took a minute off the clock and that means that chad warrell will send back out reuben owens and his riceberg's offense tough possession there charges remember they got five yards on a penalty so they only had a first and five and they're only able to get one yard from that point on and so we know about el campo there how great their offense is but their defense has been pretty impressive so far too in the two possessions they held warden to 21 points last week the best of defenses played this year in terms of points surrendered ocampo having issues getting set on offense here's motion the wildcat again owens keeps it himself bouncing it to his left sheds a tackle there he goes racing down the sidelines and out of bounds at the charger 45 31-yard run for reuben owens yeah so elusive and uh talk about his upright running style he doesn't really hunch when he runs he's a track guy he's a medalist i think is a sophomore in uh so he's quite an athlete and just upright running style but he's really fast so don't beat the seed by the fact he doesn't hunch over when he runs already three carries 48 yards for owens in this game and the riceberg stay in the wildcat offense boy but again the pre-snap issues with el campo a problem as coach rorell calls for his second timeout let's talk more about el campo's head coach chad morrell in his first season with the rice birds came over from brock high school where he was for 10 years built that program from the ground up and won a state championship at brock back in 2015 took that program to the state tournament four times and he inherited a pretty good situation here carrie when you bring in athletes like ruben owens and john trey davis from the previous regime yeah they're and they're a 4-18 member so uh champion's a 5-8 so they're going to do some really good things down in in the 4a in the playoffs they're going to be a tough team to deal with coming into 2021 el campo the sixth ranked team in the state in class 4a he did have a loss and that was the full shear owens had hell 214 if you want to say that an off night for reuben owens sure first and ten balls on the ground and it's still loose it looked like reed young had a beat on it but the chargers come away with it [Applause] turnover force by champion and the first break of the game for the chargers might have been brendan holland not really sure who recovered that but the ball just on the hand up and that's kind of the problem when you have a running back that's not used to being a quarterback sometimes there's problems on the exchange took a long roll for the running back look like he jumps on it but it's squirted out the last second and covered by the chargers tenth turnover that the chargers have gotten this year they forced four last week and they take over now the 45. [Music] ballon heaves that off the fingertips of the tight end krause incomplete and i'm noticing here from this defense in addition to eight in the box quite a bit a lot of press coverage here jamming the receivers at the line yep and that time winnings in that linebacker he came in from that outside and he put some pressure and i think he got to to balan knocked him down and made him throw touchdown catches alex rodriguez ran for more than a hundred carson kaiser three touchdown passes and a big fourth quarter comeback for champion that night yeah that was a great game and you know it was it was uh it looked like wow it looked like steven's probably going to win this game you know they had a lot of momentum and then chargers came up with the with the interception i think that set up that first score i want to say uh jacob carraway had an interception gave him a real short field they scored then they stopped stevens and they went down and scored again and uh won that game that was a great great way to start the season according to the nail biter with them and stevens and emmitt stevens have played some really good games over the years champion has the advantage i think head-to-head five to two but only one has been a blowout all the others have been pretty uh pretty close like that real competitive game that's a great that's a great uh been a great series and a great uh rivalry with those two schools real close games the falcons had over 300 yards passing that night and again the total opposite of what champions up against here this evening the rice birds have already run for more than 200 yards as a team fair catch called for by riha and champion sets up with the 29 yard line so again if you're just catching up carson kaiser out for the second coming off a seven win season from last year and again a second place finish in district 15 5a only losing to animal heights in district play and just two years removed from that historic 13-win season in 2019 they they have now been to the playoffs seven consecutive years last year making it to the region quarterfinals bates pressured and taken down back at the 32-yard line sack on the play there for the rice bird's clarence farrow brings up third and long when that loss to alamo heights and district last year that dropped them to second place in that district which means they had to play the district champ from the adjoining district which was liberty hill and we know what they did one of the great programs in the state always a championship contender with that slot t offense too high on the throw from bates looking for brooks [Applause] and the chargers will punt it away when you saw that game last year liberty hill yeah panthers again it's one of the great offenses in the state a lot of programs run slot t but i'm not sure many run it better than liberty hill i agree they they're the best that that i've seen doing it the way they do it and the champion had speed size and they had speed and boy their speed was winning that game crossing good punt and picked up at the 31-yard line by jacob gresham 3 37 left first half all rice birds on top 34 to nothing the ricebirds lost to full shear speaking of option teams they played port lavaca calhoun beat the same crabs in week three 49-35 two teams that love to run the football those two combined for close to 800 yards rushing in the game i bet they were done it hour and a half not this game tonight this is halftime and we're at about an hour and a half not to mention a long halftime program coming up as well homecoming weekend here at champion high first down and a good run for steven norman i might see more of him as the game gets away from champion might see less and less of reuben owens yeah you wonder he's out there right now how much longer is he going to play up 34 to nothing and he may be out there i'm sure he'll get another carrier too but he may just be a decoy at this point owens already 222 yards on just 13 carries his absurd numbers here from owens arguably the best athlete champion will face all of this season it's owens flips it back to anderson can't handle it [Applause] a pile around the football and el campo comes away with the football to bring up third down it was kind of a decoy they kind of faked it to him he was going to pitch it back a little flea flicker action you think well why are they doing this they're up 34 to nothing but you know just they start district in two weeks and so they're giving district opponents who's scouting this game stuff they have to prepare for [Applause] third down six to go after the recovered fumble here's owens and stops short of the first down with 2 40 to go here in the half 34-nothing rice birds on top and fourth down here and two and chad warrell is not sent in the punting unit yet you could quick kick here and that avoids a return generally speaking looks like they're going to bring the punt team out though with such a big lead but we'll see maybe not maybe they're going to play it out the whole first half just play it like you normally would and start resting guys in that second half we'll see the riceberg's out of timeouts here the play clock winding down all the way to zero take the penalty i guess not sure why you need more room to punt from your own 40-yard line they're just trying to build heads that look like as well on that play after the short punt it is second down and long bait swines throws high for ryan brandon that'll stop the clock minute 19 left in the half and again it has been all el campo reuben owens four rushing touchdowns 222 yards on the ground the scoring started with a 68-yard touchdown run by dk ward out of the wildcat and we only saw the one-headed monster we didn't see the two-headed monster that that they have tonight we didn't see their other back yeah no sign of john trey davis baits the screen for reha and the rice birds all over it on the tackle it was jacob lopez meanwhile carson whittington is down for el campo and looks to be favoring his right arm to see that last game of non-district you don't want to be getting guys hurt in the blowout win short six yard completion there banks to reha with a minute eight to go in the half 34 nothing el capo on top as winnington is helped up and will go to the sidelines again keep in mind it's not a large roster for el campo they're a foray so players playing both ways whittington a starter on the defensive line we'll have to check out owens is back there on defense right now is safety he tends to go in passing downs or punt returns but had an interception earlier in the game so on fourth down krause out to punt ocampo very much in punt safe here nobody's back deep to return there was what appeared to be a fake punt early in the game not executed by champion and krause is punt down to the five yard line down by arles atticus and that's a really good punt there from krause able to pin it down at the five yard line that's a 48-yard punt comes with 51 seconds to go in the half and the rice birds on top 34 to nothing well 51 seconds no timeouts let's see how the rice birds play this do they give it to owen see if he can bust one or you just kind of take it in a locker room let's see ocampo is out of timeouts i don't see owens out there and we'll see how the ricebirds operate here productions and dog and pony grill [Music] about ready to start the third quarter el campo a dominant first half as a score indicates the rice burns on top 34 to nothing reuben owens unstoppable in the first half for el campo 13 carries 222 yards scoring four touchdowns touchdown runs of 6 58 42 and 28 yards so you think about adjustments when you get to halftime but when the score is this lopsided i don't know if that's really a part of the conversation especially since this is a non-district game so what should the approach be think carry for both teams in the second half well i'd be shocked if owens played a whole lot in the second half up 34 to nothing getting ready to start district so he maybe you play him a series just to kind of get him used to winding down at halftime and starting back up just to kind of get his body used to that other than that i don't see why you would play him much more than a series so uh and i think if your champion you know this game yeah you want to be 5-0 in non-district but it's not you know you're not going to sell out to try to get that right now you just want to end this game and get out of here without any more injuries get everybody healthy and so i think both teams are going to probably run that ball a lot in that second half and just try to shorten this game and get out of here and i think it's just about just trying to get out of here healthy and if your champion maybe get some scores and uh just try to get that goose safe off the board and go from there and uh been a very dominating performance by the rice birds and what is a riceberg by the way that is a tremendous question just always wondered that anytime i hear the the words rice and bird together you think about weddings um but those are doves right so i don't know we'll carry i guess we'll have time for the second half to figure it out i can tell you that jordan ballen did come out of the locker rooms fully dressed helmet is on pads are on he's kneeling on the sidelines right now ballon got hit a lot in the first half and gave way to evan bates so i don't know how much more we'll see ballon in this game and he's talking to coach harbuck there the middle school coach who used to be the a.d at comfort on side and goes right to a riceboard player at the 47 right into the waiting arms of renner spinrath so el campo will have a short field to start the second half and looking to build upon a 34 to nothing lead last two games last six quarters the ricebirds about scored their opponents now 104 to 21. the only blemish really for them has been the penalties they just had a lot of penalties in that first half 13 of them for 115 yards first down play and this is ward who scored the game's first touchdown and ward starts the third quarter with a nine yard run and owens is he's out there uh he's handing the ball off right now we'll see if he um how much he wants to run and how much they're going to play him here in the second half all right carrie i had to look it up just for you according to wikipedia rice bird is a name for a number of different birds especially those that feed on paddy fields or on various grains not necessarily just rice okay i was hoping for more of a response after i did all the research for you first down pickup by the way for stephen norman or nelly short of the first down brings up third and short it's not like you had to go to the library and look in the book i mean he just picked up the phone right fair enough i remember uh bernie high played the rice birds one year under center goes anderson that will move the change for el campo a pickup on third and one to the champion 41 yard line i can tell you this high school football mascots in texas will get you looking on wikipedia to find out exactly what they are the white faces hereford not that you need the dictionary or wikipedia to look up what a unicorn is right but people not from this area when they first come across the new braunfels unicorns they're just blown away there's any football team named after a mythical magical horse first down anderson lofting that deep man wide open touchdown el campo second tonight for d.k ward at a 40 spot put on the board by the rice birds nice move by ward looked like he kind of broke in and got the defender to bite on that first move then it's kind of a double move and then he goes takes it back up field and nice throw and tail campbell doesn't like to throw but they've shown when they have to throw they're they're pretty capable they're not a lot a lot of teams that run when they try to throw they're horrible at it riceberg's a very capable throwing team so dk ward has touched the ball four times tonight and has piled up more than 140 yards of offense on those of a blocker and special team just happened to fair catch the football for bernie champion that was aiden pickett and he came off limping to the field it's been kind of in firm reward for the chargers over the past couple of weeks so many guys players going down to injury and here's the first down run got lassoed after an eight yard gain and we do see evan bates remain at a quarterback so likely i would assume carry them the night is done for jordan ballen yeah he was stretching like he was working on a certain body part he's still kind of moving around his right leg i'm not sure what's going on but yeah he's probably done for the night rehab that time sent back for a loss carry north on the tackle for the rice birds along with hal irwin that'll go down as a loss of four it's been a tough night for cole rija seven carries seven yards well it's been a tough night everywhere all around basically uh pickett he talked about he just went into the tent so they're gonna look at him and hopefully he'll be all right by district two weeks baits on the rollout somehow got that pass off but not gonna get a first down good tackle out in space after the catch was made by canon brooks and the chargers first third quarter possession ends in a three and out yeah i don't know like i said how much you take out of this if you're the chargers this may just be let's burn this film and just focus on medina valley and go from there and not read too much into this or take too much out of it chargers hopeful to have carson kaiser back at quarterback by the 15-5a opener in two weeks grousey's punt and this is to be returned by ward d.k ward runs across the 40 with a flag in and this might come back in a hold against the rice birds recap the first two wins of the year for the chargers victories over stevens and macarthur in week three champion took the long drive over to laredo and beat united south 24-12 and went on the road close to 400 yards of offense that night for keith kaiser's team pretty balanced too this with champion playing without alex rodriguez at running back for the first time this year and cole reha big night for him 180 yards in that win at a touchdown yeah and they felt like they left a lot of points on the board they scored three times it was 21 to they had 21 points at the half and they only managed to field goal they did have a touchdown call back they had a couple of penalties that hurt them they felt like they left a bunch of points on the board after the penalty against el campo owens back into the game and will settle for four yard run on first down again what a night it's been for reuben owens so you look back at his first half 13 carries 220 yards and four touchdowns i'm just curious how long they're going to keep them out there 41 to nothing you do wonder about the depth at back for a 4a program that already seems to be with alan john trey davis tonight here's owens turns her corner to the outside look at that speed owens first down across the 40 at the 43 good for 9. [Music] see him turn that corner just like he said that that acceleration he can just take it to another level owens nearly had at 300 yards himself on only 16 carries against port lavaca calhoun he's on pace for a new season high perhaps career high tonight ron a quarterback on the run himself and got crowned by tanner lee [Music] kind of looked like a zone read there quarterback rod decides to keep it it's a nice gain out of it haven't seen a ton of read option from el campo tonight really just been give the ball to four and get out of the way for ocampo it's not a bad game plan it's not really isn't as we tick inside of seven and a half to go rice birds firmly in control on top 41-0 here's owens and that's going to bring up third down good tackle and first contacts made by brendan holland look there's a there's a flag right but in front of the charger sideline let's see it's going to back them up it looks like yep illegal formation thyme yawn penalty and that's certainly been a disappointing trend for el campo tonight if you're head coach chadwell 14 flags now for more than 120 yards that's really the only thing they've done bad well and they had a really short punt but other than that had a p-80 blocked but yeah you're counting the issues on one hand if you're ocampo rod is going to hand it off this time to norman and this will bring up third and long here for the rice birds offense against the defense which first four games of the year kerry looked pretty good yeah you know when you play a nationally ranked running back he's got a way of making you look kind of normal average and the goal i know coming in was to just to kind of put a lot of people in the box and try to get them to throw a little bit but that just really hasn't they really haven't been able to do that not really a scheme against athletes like that yeah third down and 12 rod flushed out to his right rod spins away and finally chucks out to the sidelines and that looked like it could be intentional grounding that's what coach is arguing but did brock roth get that back to the line of scrimmage and i think that's what the officials are saying yeah he was out of the pocket that's actually a smart plate he tried to reverse field nothing there has three chargers around him and and he just makes the throw and uh saves the loss on the yardage but it'll be fourth and long here this charger defense through the first four games only surrendering 14 points of contest but tested here tonight and here's stewart another short punt and touchdown at the 37 yard line only a 22 yard punt and it comes with 5 50 to go in the third quarter and again el campo comfortably in control they led 14-nothing at the end of one three second quarter touchdowns by reuben owens ballooned that lead at 34-0 going into the locker rooms a quick strike in the third quarter on a passing play anderson to dk ward 41 nothing rice birds on first and ten that pass is caught by the titan krause on a strike thrown by baits it's good for eight yards i don't want one thing champion talked about doing before the game started was it was kind of doing some hurry up because rice birds have players that play both ways maybe try to wear them down and maybe be a factor in the second half but it just that part hasn't really worked out either brings up second short reha fights for first down yardage on a hard-earned three yards that'll move the sticks again the chargers coming off an impressive win over laredo united here at bernie isd stadium last week 42-14 first game without carson kaiser at quarterback this year but jordan ballon was magnificent last week more than 340 yards passing 32 completions and threw four touchdowns three of those to ryan brandon here's a nice run best of the night for the chargers offense good for 12. got an injured iceberg player back at the champion side of the field that was hal irwin who works his way back to the sidelines and kerry and i talked about it ryan brandon big game last week favorite target of balance 12 catches more than a buck 63 touchdowns including the chargers longest play from scrimmage this year a 95 yard score yeah in that game loretta united against the longhorns they were down 14 nothing in that first quarter and they scored 42 straight from the 40 bates going deep and what a catch inside the 15-yard line griffin jones holds it in inside the red zone nice throw nice catch just kind of floats it out there jones good separation from the defender just goes up and gets it defender jumps too but jones gets up higher that is a 28 yard play for the chargers deepest they've been tonight under four to go in the third chargers trying to get onto the scoreboard as baits takes a shot from kerry north and able to pop back up that ball just kind of squirted out i guess he's able to get enough on it it was a throw his arm was moving forward but took a pretty good pop that time like you said and even then bates again able to pop up but looking a little stiff after taking that shot chargers trying to prevent getting shut out an offense putting up close to 40 points per game scoreless so far tonight yeah got movement delayed game well shout out last time champion was shut out was last year in the playoffs against liberty hill and it only ever happened one time before that in their history that was the alamo heights so only two shutouts twice have they ever been shut out in history and this this would be number three but they're trying their best to avoid that it's been such a prolific offensive team over the years tough to keep them in check but el campo's done that tonight here's the rush baits heaves out to the end zone brandon incomplete in the back corner there was a flag thrown back at the 25 where bates got rid of it and let's see this is roughing the passer they brought the they brought the house that time and i tell you cole reha did a good job picking up the blitz from the outside and bought his quarterback a little bit of time there on that block talking to coach kaiser so and there it is roughing the passer yet another 15-yard penalty the fifth 15-yarder against del campo that's a tough one because they had him at second and 15 and now it's gonna be first in first in goal inside the 10 ball marked down to the eight yard line or actually inch back to the four on half the distance of the goal so now the chargers four yards away from cracking the scoreboard bryce burrs trying to conserve a shutout as the third quarter winds down here's bates to throw to the end zone man wide open touchdown cannon brooks on a well-designed play he kind of got lost there riceberg's defense got full he sent the receiver across the top and he drew derby away from that area and brooks positive uh momentum right now first play this drive owens off the left side cuts it back streaking down the sidelines and glides out of bounds inside the 20 all the way down to the 24 yard line 36 looking for ryan brandon brandon a good first half has yet to catch a ball here in the third quarter that'll bring up second down to 10 with 2 56 to go in the third and ocampo leading by 41. on second down here's the rush bait steve brandon can't haul it in got broken up down the sidelines by david ursory who's been really active in the secondary tonight for the rice birds now that time brandon he he had a step or two on the defender throws just a little bit short so he had to kind of come back to it and that allows when you have to come back that allows the defender to kind of go back into the play after this game el campo on its bye week next week they will open district play two weeks from now against stafford and district 12 4a games looming against brass's port bay city columbia and needville as well third and long baits a swing pass riha trying to cut it back and a lot of activity for not much of a yield only about three yards of the pickup and the chargers will punt it away that's the third time they tried that and that's been the best result of the three right there got about four on that one the rice brewers have just been flying to the football on defense well that throw is just such a long throw and it just take it just allows it takes a while to get out there and allows the defenders to kind of get there and converge on it krause's punt and ward is going to night up to 283 on just 17 carries i just wonder how much longer they're going to keep them in got a 41 point lead you got a five-star recruit only a junior owens still dancing pushing one of his teammates out of the way owens has 300 and more out of bounds inside the 40 all the way to the charger 37 33 more yards and a new career high for reuben owens 316 yards on the night so carrie called me out for my calculator user my phone use earlier now to bust out the old calculator see what that average comes out to the way this guy adds up numbers you almost need one nearly 18 yards of carry here's norman scored his last touch and brought down at the 30 after an honest seven yard gain as we wind down a minute to go in the third so it makes you wonder if they were just trying to get him that that 300 and then get him out of the game you're probably right that's a risk though for with a player like that you got district coming up and as you said the young man himself has a future to carson kaiser for the second consecutive week also without the services of alex rodriguez davis pike and ryan lira on offense at running back receiver and offensive line respectively has hampered champions offense here to here tonight and they've just been unable to keep up with this prolific offense for the rice birds big run again off the right side breaking a tackle inside the 20 inside the 10 all the way in for the touchdown steven norman for the second time a 30-yard run and this big night on the ground continues for el campo norman just not going to be denied he bounced off several for el campo ensuing kickoff following the 30-yard score by stephen norman the chargers will operate right across their own 40-yard line trailing 55-7 and what has been a humbling night here on homecoming 2021. yeah they kind of ruined homecoming a little bit didn't they take some shine off the boutonniere huh yeah but congratulations to the homecoming king maddox wilfong who is a tennis player [Music] and the queen is i'll tell you after this play first down riha cross the head for about three yards in first down all i'm hearing carrie is that i didn't win it this year yeah i thought you knew that before olivia farias is the homecoming queen so congratulations to them on second dance riha again and runs right into the active jacob lopez we've called his number a lot number 20 on this defense for el capo first team all district a year ago a lot of players playing both ways but lopez not one of them a defensively focused player that's gonna bring up third down and five yep and because of that like i said earlier chargers are hoping to wear them down a little bit but uh just script just kind of game script did not go there that way bates is playing the entire second half at quarterback and movement falls starting takes us back five yards so again that first district game for the chargers and 15 5a play comes on the road at medita valley and three weeks from now the first home game in district against kerbille tybee long-time rivalry between bernie high and tyvee but then when birdie high school underwent renovations and didn't play for a year the rivalry picked up with champion here's riha good run or actually not rihanna that was colin ryan on the carry good for about seven yards but short of the first down colin had some carries last week as well can you talk about that rivalry johnny manziel he never played against bernie high on the varsity his his sophomore year is the first year that champion opened fourth down and here is another run attempt by ryan and he won't get it a turnover on downs forced by the rice birds and carrie you and i were talking during halftime about johnny manziel's game here that drew one of the bigger crowds in recent memory yeah probably close to seven thousand standing room only was his senior year and uh just you know johnny put he saved his best games for bernie and bernie champion i mean basically and uh and talking to some of the coaches later down the road they said we don't feel so bad because he did the same thing to alabama you know so he did it to us but he did to alabama too so he had some great games and uh well he just i just remember he would put on a show wherever he went his first start that was champion's first year and they were licking their chops because they get a sophomore quarterback making his first start and man he was imbrezzo this is reid young on the run for el campo every run it seems like tonight has gone for positive yardage i'm looking at the numbers here i can only count one rush attempts on the night of more than 30 of them that has been behind the line of scrimmage and you talk about those drives you know how every drive that they've scored on you talk about those big plays every drive has been about a four or five play drive i think the longest has been six and that last one they went about 80 90 yards whatever it was there's attacker for loss a good stop in the backfield by jared wingo junior safety had an interception last week in the win over the longhorns that's going to bring up third down and long up to back pretty good loss that their last drive that scoring drive that one went for el campo went to 78 yards so it really didn't matter where you put them it didn't matter if you pinned them back pretty far they showed they they had the ability to get down the field rather quickly on the topic of rivalries bernie high tonight at freddy's fredericksburg of course the two for a long time we're in a district with one another not the case anymore but there have been some great battles over the years years between the greyhounds and the billies yeah and uh talking to coach uh hendricks about that this week and he said you know we're not in the district we wish we were we're not but he said uh we felt like it was important both communities to continue the rivalry in non-district and he said the communities wanted it we the coaches wanted it players wanted it so that's why that's why they were out there so they were losing at halftime let's see if i can find the score greyhounds two and two through their first four games chargers 4-0 they have they've had a brutal non-district they played 5a two five a's in a row uh they played the best taps private school in the state lubbock christian and then they they went to um last week went to sweetwater had a good win against the team that beat them last year it was gregory portland last week right last week was sweetwater sweetwater win but portland was on the schedule third down and long here's a first down carry for kayson braden that'll move the change here for el campo clock winds inside a 7 40 left rice birds have been in command since early on el campo scored the first touchdown four minutes into the game a 68-yard run on a wildcat play for d.k ward and el campo was not looked back since then as a team they have run for over 400 yards big hole off the left side inside the 30 yard line goes another riceberg ball carrier first carry tonight for connor ewing riceberg's trying to hit the 60 mark bernie's winning against fred 26-17 end of the third quarter and typical bernie fred game pretty close that matter of the record always a tough game for both sides eight different riceberg players have run the football tonight make it nine now football is fumbled and it's picked up by the chargers jumping on the ball ethan stanley the sophomore hasn't as the chargers pick up their second turnover of the game the ball was coughed up by d.k norman off his first carry of the night and so if the rice birds are going to hit 60 he'll have to wait a while longer 6 27 to go as the chargers take over they were down 14 nothing at the end of one 34-0 at the end of the half and now trail 55-7 bates flip sack complete to reha and got hit out of bounds right away after a short gain of four yards that was chase rija with his first catch she and cole twins on the team for head coach keith carson keith kaiser makes you wonder when when alex rodriguez does come back what's what's going to be rihan's role are they going to one to them kind of platoon them in or just focus on with one back i i think you got two really dynamic running backs so we'll see how they approach it that's a great question rodriguez again was playing so well before the injury big night and opening night of the win over the stevens falcons here's a big hole off the left side all the way down to a 42 colin ryan good acceleration first down chargers he delivered a little bit of blow there at the end he kind of lowered that shoulder and you know i like walter payton's approach just because you got the you have the ball and you're on offense doesn't mean you can't initiate contact and hit the defender just as hard as they would hit you 24 yards on the night for ryan 17 and coming on that carry and it is ryan again this time settles for a couple past the halfway point of the fourth and the chargers will take a four and one record into the bye week but again with bigger games looming meanwhile el campo their record will be 4-1 as well but going into the bye week on a winning notes and a two-game win streak ahead of their 12-40 opener against stafford in two weeks bates pressure danny's taken down doesn't seem like no or it's no matter who that the rice birds put out there on defense are getting to the opposing quarterback getting a good pass rush yeah and and really it's just a numbers game they just bring more guys in than you can block so you got five guys blocking they're bringing six in so uh it doesn't matter if it's second third teamers they're gonna cause some problems because of the numbers here's bankstown trying to convert third and long against aiden coverage and still gets sacked against a three-man rush fighting his way inside to make the play there for the rice birds was tristan harper and on fourth down and close to 20. let's see what the chargers do here oh i think you go for it at this point of the game under four minutes why not i think well i think champs is going to call timeout and talk about it but they're going to let this clock run as much as possible here again this was a rise for defense that was suspect in the first four games they are not playing though a charger team at full strength offensively that said the pass rush has been relentless they have forced turnovers for them tonight three of those interceptions and if i'm head coach chad warrell i am very happy with the play of the defense offensively he knew this team was strong defensively they had work to do this is the best effort they've had all year that comes right before the bye week yeah you got to be happy especially defensively you only give up seven points so far and shut them out through the first three quarters or what at least through the half and so and they did score in that third quarter but yeah and and really champion just was not able to establish anything i mean they just really couldn't get anything kind of any kind of consistent flow to their game it was just a struggle even to get first downs and to keep the their defense off the field by that's how you stop a team from scoring right you don't let them get the ball you have the offense you run a lot of plays and you eat a lot of time and that limits their possessions just weren't able to do that consistently tonight and coach kaiser will send out krause for the punts on fourth down and 20. nobody back deep to return and with 306 to go el campo tanks over at its own 19 yard line the 55 points not a season high for ocampo again they put up 70 just last week 70. that's pretty good two games going into a break 120 points my lightning fast mine figures at 60 a game i don't even have to get the calculator out for that one technically 62 and a half by the way again the big night for reuben owens 18 carries more than 310 yards four rushing touchdowns and el campo on this possession barring champion timeouts if with a couple of first downs could ice it but the ball is fumbled and it looks like el campo no the chargers recover and so a silver lining here if your champion tonight is that the defense has forced three turnovers now like jack burkhart with the recovery it looked like and so the chargers have a chance to work on some more things offensively perhaps make the score look a little bit more cosmetic again champion looking forward to the return of carson kaiser at quarterback alex rodriguez running back do not know the long-term status of davis pike if he can't return to the near future that's a big blow to the receiving core yeah it is because with him and brandon out there you had a one-two punch and you really couldn't focus on one if he doesn't come back anytime soon you're gonna really have a focus on brandon to kind of limit him maybe double-team him first down good run inside the 15 accelerating down inside the 10. goes colin ryan 18-yard run for ryan and you got a couple defensive players out as well that'll be coming back kate galt one of them final two minutes set his goal to go here for champion a false start will back this up you know i don't know like we said earlier how much you take out of this if you're champion the only thing it cost you was a perfect non-district record that's it that's all it costs you and you got two weeks get ready for medina valley and you go from there and you see it it happens at every level teams have a bad game when the spurs are winning championships they had some blowout losses and it happens there's a blitz in first down and what a tackle goodness another big hit from jacob lopez just smashed ryan down to the ground and now it's second to go all the way back up at the 18-yard line well like you said it's just cosmetic at this point but you know the chargers really want to score here they do have two timeouts left as we wind down to the final minute a game controlled by the rice birds from the start blitz again ryan again and this will bring up third and goal now from the 16. and you heard kerry say this will mark the chargers first loss of the year heading into the start a 15-5a play off the play fake pass is broken up those swing passes the rice birds have been all over them that ball goes off the hands of caleb smith and that will send out the field goal unit and will wallace again maybe a chance here to test this range some this would be an attempt from 33 yards out yeah and it's not a pressure kick in the sense that it's going to affect the outcome but it is in a game with live speed game speed and so good for will to to get that type of uh kick wallace missed a field goal attempt last week this from 33 left-footed kicker plenty of leg and in and wallace drills that from 33 yards out with 16 seconds to go makes it now 55 to 10. so in this game again if you're coach kaiser you've seen what evan bates can do at third string quarterback you see a field goal put in successfully by will wallace the defense has forced three turnovers so there have been some positives and what has been an otherwise lopsided affair yeah and um like i said you got two weeks to get ready i'm sure that the riceberg is going to go into their break feeling pretty good about their last two games and about about this game and uh i'm sure champion would have loved to have gone in the break with a win that would leave a good taste in your mouth for two weeks so maybe this is gonna naught the chargers during the bye week and they're going to come out you know full steam ahead against the medina valley we'll see how how that plays out with them mentally and you you get the sense that come late november early december you might look back at this game and realize just how good this el campo team was a team that might have a long run in them in the postseason yeah i i'd be shocked if they didn't have a long run i don't know if i'll win it all but i i don't see them i mean who's going to beat them in the early rounds i would think they'd go several rounds deep wallace will kick it deep shows off his leg again and good for a touchback and there should be one final stop with this game with 11 seconds to go this will go down as win number four on the year for chad horrell and the rice birds again in his first season after guiding brock to a decade of success including a state championship six years ago well he picked a good time to come into el campo with the backs that he's got and the talent he's got like you said not a lot of depth for 4a they don't have a lot of kids on that sideline but the ones that are on the field are pretty darn good victory formation and brock ron will take the final snap of the game and that will close the book on this game and on non-district play what a performance tonight by reuben owens 316 yards rushing four rushing touchdowns tells the story of what was a dominant start to finish win for el campo 55 to 10 over the chargers but again carrie bigger games low ahead yeah yeah this is a non-district game you just wanted to get through this without any kind of injuries or anything like that and i know there's there was probably a few guys kind of nicked up tonight hopefully it's just kind of a short-term thing and like i said all this cost you was a perfect non-district and it doesn't matter what you do in non-district i mean yeah you want to do well but i've seen teams go 5-0 and non-district and then district starts and they go 0 and 5. i saw that happen and so did you get better from this game and i i think champion dude they got to see a back who's a dynamic one of the best in the country they're going to see backs like this down the road and floresville has a really good back and so this kind of gives them a taste of what that's like and then once the playoffs started champions in the top four which the i would think they would be but um you know it's they're gonna probably see a back like this like they did against fort bend marshall two years ago with a chain who's now at a m and was the argible mvp so they got they got to see a back like that so um i think you just gotta look at the positives and and go from there and get ready for non-district just throw this game out and get ready for district well that's going to wrap up our coverage here from bernie texas again el campo a dominant win 55-10 over the chargers as they improve their record of 4-1 while champion suffers its first loss dropping the record of 4-1 heading into the bye week next week so
