I think like a lot of people I've always wished that I could fly and that's the theme I'm thinking about for today's flip book the ability to fly when I was a kid I had this vivid dream that I could fly it was the most amazing feeling being up in the air over my house and then later when I was in high school I did this drawing of myself based on that flying dream that I had so I got thinking about that desire to fly and I know sometimes when I have day dreamed about being able to fly part of it is imagining that moment of what it would be like to rise up into the air and then have everyone on the ground below you just drop their jaws dumbfounded as you float up and then fly away I think that would be such an awesome and a funny moment I've also been in the mood lately to do some animation just using a very simple silhouette style and I want to do something really loose feeling I usually tend to gravitate toward making everything really perfect almost overly perfect sometimes and so I want to do something loose and intentionally imperfect again just using these simple stark silhouette shapes all right before we get into it further this video is brought to you by the ridge wallet if you're all it looks anything like this go check out the ridge the ridge is minimalist while still giving you everything you need it holds up to 12 cards plus room for cash each wallet comes with a lifetime warranty and you can test drive it for 45 days send it back for a full refund if you don't love it I have the forged carbon version and I got this one from my brother it's the titanium gunmetal finish they have tons of options get 10% off today with free worldwide shipping and returns by going to Ridge comm slash Andy Mason that's Ridge comm slash Andy Mason and use code Andy Mason link in description so my idea here is to have all these business people in suits just being busy walking and generally being absorbed and their phones I'm doing this animation in a stark silhouette style I just kind of like the idea of silhouettes for this and for keeping things less detailed in that way I also want to keep it somewhat loose and sketchy one reason I want to keep it loose is that while it'll help the drawings go faster but I think it'll also add some energy and texture to it rather than just everything being overly perfect and straight since that's kind of the vibe I'm going for here anyway just you know breaking loose idea of purposefully coloring outside the lines so to speak okay so one thing I've done first off is I've filmed myself for reference footage and I'm following it very closely as I animate I also found this stock footage of a woman walking and using that for reference as well so I'm keeping everything sketchy but going for very realistic movement I've said it before but studying movement in reference video is hugely helpful when you're animating so if you're ever not sure what a particular move looks like film it and then study the footage frame by frame I'm basically going through and animating one person at a time these two are just standing still obviously but you know what kind of surprised me and what I think is really cool is that even though these two are just standing still staring at their phones the kind of sketchy marker makes it actually feel like there's some movement like if you watch the woman close-up I swear it looks like you can see her arm moving and using her phone I just thought that was really cool you might also notice that I'm using larger flipbook paper here than I usually do I've been working on this new larger size of paper and I'm looking at offering it in my store soon so you know if you guys would be interested in this larger size of flipbook paper I really like it so far [Music] okay now this guy in the middle he's our main character and he's gonna fly away at the end first I'm gonna have him look at the people around him he looks up at the sky looks at the ground he's basically just thinking what are we all doing here standing like this dressed the same doing the same thing and then he's just gonna fly away I'm taking a lot more time drawing him because I want to see a fairly clear head shape I want to be able to tell that he's looking around looking up at the sky looking to the ground and where we can't see his face you have to be able to read those movements just in the silhouette head shape I'm using a Copic pen for his head and tight because that's where I need more precision in detail and but then at Copic marker is enough for the you know the detail on the rest of his body [Music] let's talk about templates for a second when you're gonna be holding the same pose for quite a few pages like eight or ten pages I find it really helps to make one key drawing first and we'll use that as your template you trace over that same drawing every time I do this all the time and what it does is it helps prevent your drawings from drifting and subtly morphing out of shape over the you know eight or ten pages [Music] [Music] now for the jump again I'm following my reference video closely I'm taking a lot more time on the animation here as well making sure it works [Music] [Music] all right I had thought I would end it here but it kind of feels like it needs one last shot to conclude it so I think I'm gonna go wide I'll see a cityscape silhouette and then I just wanted to see this tiny little man flying up into the sky so I'm just sketching out lots of ideas for a little flying dude until I find one I like and then I'll trace over that one for the animation the shot I think it'll probably be kind of funny-looking to be honest because this is so small I'm using a Copic 0.05 pen it's really nice for tiny little details the thing I'm liking about using silhouettes is that I can sort of tell a story faster it's like it's a little more abstract maybe a little easier to get through the animation [Music] so this flipbook ended up pretty good-sized 146 pages the animation itself was kind of refreshing to make and I just I liked using the black marker and it was just it was nice to keep it fairly loose and you know there's just something I like about using silhouettes like that okay well here it is we're not but we have it hold on tight found what we look at call us crazy but the future is bright thanks guys let me know what you think in the comments below don't forget to visit animation shop where you can stock up on more flipbook paper subscribe if you haven't already and consider supporting the channel by joining me on
