about tradition but really it's about who is better some rivalries are superficial but for Florida a in it epitome could be this one goes to the phone spans generations dating back to 1925 making it Florida's oldest college football rivalry but we know the game extends beyond the game clock it is those sacred moments at halftime the countless hours of tailgating and trash talking and the 364 days of pure bragging rights don't like to see walk with a bethune-cookman Wildcats in to Camping World Stadium as they go head to head with the 13th ranked Florida A&M Rattlers hassey it's about to go down folks for the 40th annual Florida classic as we welcome you to ESPN college football presented by McDonald's this is the end of the season for both teams as J Walker and Tiffany green here with you and we know that this has such great significance it's not only in-state rivalry but it's also to maybe see who has the in-state bragging rights for the next 365 days bragging rights are there in abundance in this game it always has meant something special to these two teams down here Florida however this year it takes on added importance I think for Florida A&M they call it the millennium 2.0 well we'll lynnium 1.0 was pretty good but they did not finish the job a season ago getting eliminated from postseason play this year they have an opportunity to possibly become the HBCU national champions they're the number one team in HBCU football right now but Bethune Cookman head coach Terry Sims he could care less about that but those Cookman is trying to right their ship in the right direction not too long ago they were cruising with the six in one record and control their own destiny however they come into this game with a three-game losing streak knocking off Florida in can help Ford erase all of that - well the Rattlers have the number one passing attack in the MEAC led by their signal caller 5th year senior Ryan Stanley Bryan Stanley strength is his ability to distribute the football - the strength of his office which is the wide receiver core they've got a thousand yard wide receiver Ryan Stanley's done a lot of great things he has to play within the system and continue to make smart decisions with the football in order for the Rattlers to have a chance at winning this game campy was all time career leading picture in yards on the other side you have a key vyas Williams who has not lost in the sport classic they have been a little bit of a disappointing season statistically for Williams but Williams has to play big today his threat his strength is his ability to run the football he's the fastest guy on the football field from the quarterback position that's scary if he can put together the right combination of running and throwing this Wildcat offense can put up some numbers today to learn more about these seasoned quarterbacks we send it down to the third member of our team Larisa Harris well Tiffany just like you said these guys year seniors but we have to remember and 2016 that's when they first experience the flora classic as retro freshmen will I spoke to both of them and they told me that finishing was their primary focus today for T vs Williams it's about not losing to the Rattlers because he's never done that on the other side for Stanley it's about defeating the Wildcats if he wants to be considered the best quarterback and it's also about not reliving the experience last year well I'll tell you larysa that but Phil Kirkman has owned this series for most of this decade winning in a row they're coming in feeling confident that they can pull off win number nine in this Florida classic against the Rattlers and the guy to help them get there as we mentioned a key via sweetums he can beat you in a number of ways but really with his feet that's that balance he needs to throw for two touchdowns and a run for touchdown or two today for the Wildcats that have a chance so they start inside their own 25 on the first throw to the outside it was Troy Hilton on the coverage the intended target was number one Jimmy Robinson they're going to force the ball to Jimmy walk to Jimmy Roberts and if they can you have to be encouraged by Lord Amen when you talk to head coach Willie Simmons what's the difference from last year to this year our secondaries gotten so much better linebackers are the same but in the secondary those guys have really stepped up to the challenge [Music] 14 seniors for Florida am on second down the carry the head and the ball carrier wrapped up near the 30-yard line as Isaac Washington with a gain of about five give it an opportunity this is when Williams a quarterback has to make this right decision if you give something to your priest that read where you can find a receiver with some cushion take it if it's not there look for a running Lane and pick up four yards to get the first back third and four from the Wildcats 30 and there was to throw that icky vyas once again the pass is outcome just short of the marker believed by the government look at that now they're gonna go for that second effort given to that's a rivalry right so you make the catch in the flat you're three yards short you see two morons helmets coming up you gotta get through them to get the first down Lord his helmet and picked up the first down good job basic Washington good for nine and its first intend Williams throwing the ball again this time across the middle and the pass complete to step on Francois the redshirt sophomore out of Miramar Florida that was good for 11 so move the chains again and I really like it because one a net has been blitzing off the edge if you can complete the ball burst the Blitz they're gonna stop doing that their challenge have been through Cooper they're saying yes you've been able to complete the ball gets on blitz but they are continuing to bring the pressure Terry Jefferson is coming in every time number one cover on that right side trying to get to the backfield call some disruption to know that if you want to bake them into it and hit more big play [Applause] started off as bethune-cookman career as a backup quarterback and then moved out to wide receiver you see the tape down the middle on the helmet those companies known for their stylish uniforms and you look at this season that the third Cookman has had they were predicted to finish second in the MEAC and again they lived up to those expectations for the first four weeks of conference play but since that time they have tailed off Jimmy Robinson though always threatened for Terry Sims Jimmy Robinson you get them in space watch out Robinson and that what your fine player who is a show time any time he touches the ball he's gonna probably pick up some positive yards good four five there that can hurt you in special teams and this shit's really involved as a receiver you see the numbers ere 12 yards a catch and he's a bark man but a lot of times they throw him the ball behind the line of scrimmage if he brushes forward so him averaging 12 yards a carry lets you know he's really doing it himself third and short for the Wildcats nice play of this Drive coming up Williams looks to the outside and once again completing the pass it was Riley once more then the continue with that same look what's in the safety from the outside great job you're gonna see if they're trying to they're gonna bring pressure from here and they're gonna bring it from here they're not let him get a couple there he recognizes it get rid of the football that was a previous play there with Williams but if you can continue to pick a park like that Florida names gonna have to make the defensive adjustment and you have to think if you're a wildcat fan where was this offense last weekend against a NT you have to get on the board but continuing to march down the field on the carriers Ladera and wilson so the third different running back we've seen in the backfield for the Wildcats and they're continuing to pick a positive yards the impressive start to the football game the field Cookman offensively then we averaged 23 points a game and this is a team that normally Stanford almost 30 31 points one of the top offenses in the conference has been this year but again they're getting the ball they're opening possession and then parks it down the field Bethune Cookman has won eight MEAC titles a water stretch of four since 2010 Williams on this Drive six of seven for 41 yards the hand [Applause] but they figured it out I am so eager barking pressure the banks up that they found a crease going up tackle opposite side from where the Blitz is coming from great recognition by this Wildcat the rattler defense its first and goal for bethune-cookman the pressure [Applause] right there but you saw the pressure coming up from the middle by the Rattlers they brought pressure but as you mentioned wide open receiver if he had stepped into this throat this is the touchdown they're bringing the pressure to try and hit the quarterback when he misses the open receiver I thought they should have been involved signs on Florida ever possibly a free play was heading for out of bounds and then the flag came out afterwards yep on the fourth down though they're same as after work so that means Florida it may maintain possession and then you penalize them after the play lets us have arrived it becomes an automatic first down and you keep possession but I thought the flag came in well after the put the technically after fourth down they become for an A&M football if it's against the Rattlers the result of the play is the runner was short of the line the game after the play personal defense number 15 listen to the goal it will be first to that person's head Alijah Richard Simmons the one who is the guilty party but the defense from Florida mm holes though how cats it saw his team come up short as the score still remains zero bit playing right here to pursue yard-line bringing pressure from bethune-cookman Florida and better expected looking to get the endzone able to get it away but no flags marques Hendricks coming in no no this should be intentional grounded because he gave the ball away as a runner you're no longer the quarterback he gets outside the pocket but he gets the ball foot back to him so that's the part they they senior from Mississippi delivers a big blow bishop Barnett picked up four it's third and six to go be a big stop with the food cook we can force a pup in this situation to get the bar back to their but getting the next six together team to leave Xavier MacDonald on to attempt the extra point and a flag comes out before the ball is snapped to the delay of game offense five-yard penalty we played the chalk I hate that one there but that's a rivalry put me right there you excited you get to pick six all the officials don't care they're gonna start that 25 second clock and now they make the been all through hooping they have won eight straight and they had the early lead over 13th ranked Florida A&M Ryan Stanley and this senior class looking for a perfect season in the MEAC but more importantly they're trying to notch their first win in nine years against the Wildcats and Willie Simmons in his second season as head coach says look this version this year's version of the Rattlers and that's how he's trying to play into the psyche of his players to get them ready for today I was trying to figure that out like what do you think you never lost in a wrap when he saying hey no we're the new mean this is millennia of 2.0 2.0 is zero and zero gets the fool Cookman trying to start fresh and right that is going to be this quarterback to have a short memory off of that pick six the squib kick mishandle and then just fell apart by the rat let's go back to that interception though territory this is how you play the safety position Trevor managed right here I don't have much to draw for the watch him watch the quarterback I've been watching you watching me he's looking he's looking he's looking oh you did gonna throw the ball over here you don't see me looking dead in your grill it makes the interceptions better stop the run that's how you play the safety position nothing gets behind you and the quarterbacks eyes in many cases will take you where he's gonna throw the football Ryan Stanley who we've mentioned has had a tremendous career the best passer to ever wear a Florida A&M uniform yes [Music] with pressure and this has to get rid of it but all-time leading passer in yards attempts I think when you talk to a lot of the legends that I have to see Quinn green last night as well who loose Emma senses he leads in the tips he's only my four-year starter they've had in the passing era so his success has done a great job went into football games throwing up some numbers but he's going to be judged like Larissa said earlier if he can win this game this is your legacy game of your right Stan Stanley swinging it out to Bishop bottom bottom you're still on this became out of the backfield and the redshirt junior with a good game brings up third down the zone cook the defensive line playing a little bit quicker than we've seen him play all season long Norma they're loaded with team speed but they've been neutralized cyber woman this football season but now we're really starting to see some get off on the ball and the Florida A&M coaches are well aware of that watch number 19 Florida and bottom of your screen if they give him in a one-on-one battle that's Xavier Smith the dynamic receiver going back the other way his Y and Stanley and the pass is caught by Marcus Williams another dangerous target for this rattler office this is a great job of going back to get this football you see a watch and reach back on the opposite side from the defender bring the ball into his chest Williams a fifth year senior knows what's at stake that game-winning catch against North Carolina in overtime a few weeks back [Music] [Applause] the carryin up the middle spun around and finally dragged down bonnet saw Marquis Hendrix and a number of maroon jerseys as we'll send it down to Larissa with more well when we spoke to head coach Willie Simmons earlier this week he told me that Bishop bonnet was one person that a lot of people would consider a sleeper and he really wants him to have a great game today why because he can help open the office because he's explosive he was injured a little bit now he's back healthy and he's hitting his stride and we've seen him hit his stride in the past few weeks so Bishop bonnet is one but the Wildcats need to watch out for today every passing game needs a running back if you've got a running back it opens it up for the passing game so Willie Simmons knows that if we define good body going drone lanes are going to be that much better for right Stanly second and having to heave it abounds the pressure continuing to come up front from the Wildcats and Marcus Ford getting a good push and Marcus for came in preseason all-conference but we saw we've seen between several times this year many times we didn't call his name but they were starting to see his final football game is a rock showing some get off on the ball see if he can continue to be a force to this football game for the walk when you watch Ford on the field encounter him face-to-face you don't man among boys yes yeah that's grown man with grown man strength Stanley so far two four five and yet to get going the trusted zip it down the middle and the pass complete across midfield and the Rattlers keep marching when it's a big time throw by Ryan Stanley watch how quickly he gets rid of this football as soon as the receiver comes out to break it's all you've got to see it recognize that Stanley no a lot of pressure and Bishop bonnet with the caring lorisha talked about just how he's starting to come on very quick and explosive type of bat also very strong 600 pounds quarter second and four quick step Stanley just throws it over the head of a zip and now a marker is out Trevor Merritt was on the coverage only one that can catch it he was so wide open to find a nice pass away and deliver the strike you know this game it means a whole lot to Ryan and you have to like the response your season of your fifth year senior after giving six points over to Bethune Cookman you come right back and answer he had to and that's the key at the short memory we took me to gate like this but that's his personnel a fantastic return from Jimmy Robinson instead of being in the red zone or near it Terry Sims team will start from the 30-yard line in their own territory and that's a tough break because when I saw the penalty flag go I thought he was setting him up right there there were two guys that were there on him and they got the first line there a little bit too soon so awful we see a guy make it lock in the back when he didn't answer Jimmy Roberts and an already sized up the would-be tackler was gonna make a move bad play for the food cook them would have been 85 yards but a key vyas Williams trying to get moving marquise Bell drags him down a short gain [Applause] and Williams is gonna need to turn on the Jets in this game it's been a while since we've seen him use that 4.3 speed then this time football game where you've got a defense it has a lot of speed on in Florida A&M you're supposed to prove here the fastest guy on the field excited Jimmy Robinson well Williams has come back so strong after going down with a season-ending knee injury a year ago still got the Jets in them we'll see if he'll bring the matter Williams looking deep and overthrows everybody its third down [Applause] and what I'm curious about or we're gonna follow this I want to see how many targets they give Jimmy Robinson you just saw what he could do on special teams I know that Terry Sims a head coach said we need to design plays for him now he's coming in the game if you can wait why would you call the pass and play without your best player on the field that's something that does not please come Sims and he said we're gonna work on that and if you don't have touches by the first corner I'm gonna call plays Williams and the black get to the tail Powell and Terrell Powell with a nice pickup good for nine and another first down for Bethune Cookman the six-foot porec wide receiver from Deerfield Beach Florida Jimmy Robinson on the perimeter picks up the first down when the Wildcats desperately needed it do you like already what you're seeing from offensive coordinator coordinator super giving more full Williams to handle putting more trust in his fifth year senior like is something I just think that I need more Jimmy you know like that don't skid on seven I live I need more cowbell that I need more Jimmy Jimmy should be in the game he's a senior it's his last Florida classic Florida A&M proved that they can tackle Jimmy Robertson first then the Kiva's Williams second way Sean bird in the backfield the cousin to Jimmy Robinson who also can flash off some Florida speed as well that's one thing that you come to know and expect from the Sunshine State Williams going forward and step on Francois may have got a hand on it but overthrown as Cortez Reid was on the coverage that was a nice route this that's kind of been the story of the Cubist Williams this year you know opportunity there to make some big plays but hasn't quite been able to finish off the big play with a little bit better throw play their football up in this game but he's going to need to complete some passes like that four wide receivers set Jimmy Robinson to the bottom of your screen on third and seven hands with time and just missed by ears - Marcus Riley its fourth down need to complete that pass keep protection up front a little bit of pressure but as a quarterback complete the ball this is Jimmy Robinson on the bottom double cover look at they've got two jerseys on the bottom finding him you complete that pass he can turn make one defender miss pick up the first down but he's Williams a little bit confused by the coverage of the secondary but to your point everyone is well aware of the showstopper Jimmy Robinson and you see the respect that Florida A&M is giving to number one in the and the youngest in Florida am history Courtney Gosha joining both Jay and I Courtney welcome in this is your first quarter class this is my first Florida classic and it is an experience I can tell you that much all right so you don't have to deviate too much from the colors because you were used to some orange and you know they had a little different shade of green Desilu University of Miami but in your mind what drew you to this job at Florida A&M you know I think the unique opportunity to represent our student athletes you know our student athletes get its opportunity for a world-class education and you know really when you look at the potential of athletics department it was you know having second-guess of a back we can talk very politically correct all day long one of the challenges that face floored a them because you're a blueblood program one of the most historic HBCU athletic programs in the country what are some of the immediate challenges you're gonna address you know I think it's efficiencies in process you know we haven't really had a lot of stability in the ADEs chair and so obviously the university's made a long-term commitment for me to be there and to really put a plan into place for us to have sustained growth things are you know our best days you get to come it is gonna be a lot of challenges and things that we have to address but we can do it that's the fabric that makes our family I just learned something today if you guys want to have some like mascot auditions and mascot trainers it used to be really good but you know the sense of pride and passion if mu is second to none when you look at what Willie Simmons has done in just his second season with the program how do you make sure that sports are on par with the championship type of effort that they've given this year so I think it's about building the culture we're winning a championship culture and coach Simmons has really demonstrated that to the best of his bed y'all can't see it but we can't in the booth Courtney came ready with these foreign shoes he was he was ready to go on second and six Bethune Cookman off the carry and they get just a few and he's breaking a rule you know I always say when you're in my booth I'm always gonna be the sharpest dress to them from the booth he came in their style and all me man that's the easy way not to get invited back when you're my size you know almost six five you know big dude it's hard to look good just to look like an average dressed guy so I think when I look at Ridge so tie goes to the big dude good luck to you sack giving them offensive coordinator and opportunity to call the short yardage play and these are the situations when you have three four or five yards to pick up that are so tough to defend when you have a dual threat quarterback really more of a runner like you do on the key B is Williams Williams [Applause] 14 yard scamper [Applause] give credit to the offensive line for bethune-cookman the
