my friends hello and welcome back for some more oxygen not included tutorials welcome also to one of my oldest bases this was one of the very first bases that i played back when i very first started the game my save file says this is from august 2018 and this is a good example that i always will want to go back to to see what the perspective of this game is like from a new player's eyes and what kind of mistakes could commonly be made i've mentioned this before in other videos that i did not actually start feeling very successful in this game until i died maybe 15 or 20 times and i didn't literally die i would just abandon my colony because it had so many problems and i know that a lot of other players are in that same boat and this whole video is going to be about how to deal with those mid game problems and how to make yourself sustainable so that you can survive past that and get into the later parts of the game and eventually win so yeah let's talk about that uh what i've managed to do here is i've i think i've identified the four biggest uh problems that new players struggle with when they're trying to get past this whole mid game area and uh get more sustainable so i'll just throw them up on the screen here number one is going to be a lack of oxygen because it either ran out of their natural algae or they're not producing enough water number two is they have run out of food so they maybe they ran out of dirt again it could be a water problem or something else uh number three is that they can't produce enough power and number four is that their base is overheating uh if we take a look at this base that we're suffering from most of those problems so what i'm going to be doing in this video is kind of using my super old broken lost base as an example of where you might wind up and what went wrong and what we can do better in a future run or potentially how we could revive this one if we were feeling crazy i don't think i'm going to do that in this video but if you do want to see me revive this base let me know down in the comments because i'm considering what my next set of like runs and content will be so if you're interested in that uh let me know and we'll maybe try to revive this base but yeah uh so let's start off with the first point that i had the first thing that i think kills new players not necessarily the biggest reason why new players die but this is definitely something that can be common so i'll just introduce it formally number one running out of oxygen um this is going to be a lot of problems that are happening in this base related to this uh number one and the biggest thing that i should have mentioned probably instantly is that i have 59 duplicates and i'm not even at 200 cycles this is way too many and i can only illustrate this by just clicking on a handful of these duplicates and seeing how much oxygen they're consuming and if you just do the math out for 59 duplicates i'm taking on or i've had a requirement that's way too high it's something that i cannot satisfy with what i currently have um resources of oxygen to start off are probably going to be algae because it's something that's pretty common on these terra maps but once you run out of algae if you're taking a look at my account here i'm basically out i don't really have a way to produce any oxygen for these guys and if i have 59 duplicants that's gonna put a huge tax on the algae that i'll still need to go get around the map and uh still produce oxygen from but if i'm only at like say 10 or somewhere in that neighborhood the math is just totally different it's going to be much easier to produce oxygen for 10 duplicates than it is for 59 or 60 or however many that you're taking on so definitely don't fall in the trap of taking on too many duplicates that's going to be a repeated thing as to why this base was considered a failure by me um yeah so i did mention algae i think i have seen some players where they will not venture out on the map very far but i would definitely say that until you can become totally sustainable getting out on the map and digging is going to keep you alive for a long time because there still is algae around here i still could live for a little while longer of course it will be taking up my duplicant's time doing something like that so i don't want to keep doing that forever but there are other benefits to digging so at least make sure you're expanding out of your initial biome area and kind of out into the outskirts so that you can get your hands on some algae and kind of stay on these lower tech solutions until you're ready for the higher tech ones another thing i want to mention is i did mention a little bit about how you may run out of water and you may have a hard time pushing your oxygen because of a lack of water and that's definitely something that's happening here um i am just not producing enough water or there are some other problems that are leading to a water shortage so that's gonna be something i'm gonna mention when we go into a more ideal base to kind of show the real solution that i would do uh but yeah the final solution here for oxygen is going to be these electrolyzer setups but if you don't have enough water or if you don't have enough power to push something like this which is something i'm also suffering from in this run then yeah it's just gonna go out of control you're gonna run up to a point where you just can't produce enough oxygen for your base it'll be a slow and painful death up until i finally give up and this is where i basically gave up on this run because i felt like it wasn't sustainable anymore uh so yeah that those are some basics as far as what failed in this base when it comes to oxygen so let's stay focused on oxygen for right now let's jump over to a more ideal setup that you could potentially be at by about cycle maybe 100 ish which was just something that i set up in like a sandbox we'll walk through how to progress on the oxygen front up until a comfortable mid game uh so yeah let's jump over there now alright friends welcome to the example base that i have here which is kind of simulating what a base might look like around maybe cycle 100 i know it's only cycle 8 that's just because i set this up in a really quick way just to give examples of the systems that you might have up by now so we'll just kind of review those really fast and talk about what we have up and what we have going on at this stage of the game and why this can be a little bit of a trap you can feel a little bit comfortable in this type of situation but you need to still keep pushing forward and trying to solve the problems that are going to come up here in a second so what i have is basically i have a place that is collecting a bunch of the stuff that i mine out so this is going to be for polluted off for for uh polluted dirt and for slime stuff like that um this is going to be important here pretty soon so we'll address that as far as rooms we have we have plenty of rooms for all the morale needs that we'll have so barracks great hall nature reserve we have a latrine this is all pretty common we have some ranching going on we have some ranching that will actually provide coal for our power set up here we have some ventilation that's blowing out all the gases that we don't want into space mainly carbon dioxide uh this is blocked by the way that's pretty funny probably want to fix that [Music] there we go we'll go ahead and just make sure that that doesn't get covered up again but yeah that's the whole idea is we have a lot of our foundational systems up here so we can deal with the elementary stuff by this point especially since we're focusing on oxygen we're still producing oxygen from an oxygen diffuser make that two because we have mined out kind of the central area and we're at 10 10 duplicants like i mentioned before i'm just going to continue to repeat this over and over 10 duplicates is about the number that i would expect to have until you have all of your mid game problem solved it's a nice balance at least as far as i found that will keep progress going at a decent pace but also won't have too big of an expense on here so each duplicate takes up about 100 grams per second of oxygen two of these oxygen diffusers ought to be plenty for 10 duplicants and you can live off this for a little while so this is where i see a lot of new bases they're about this size maybe a little bit smaller sometimes but they're about like this and this is where a lot of new players tend to get kind of comfortable this is where i would encourage you to not get comfortable and keep pushing outward to find the stuff that you need to find just pulling up my notes here uh the stuff that you really need to find is you need to live off of this algae for as long as you can i guess uh you don't necessarily need to stretch it out for like infinity but the point here is that as you expand which you should be doing you should encounter pockets of algae like this there's going to be some in this slime biome which we'll talk about here in just a second uh there can be some left in the temperate biome if you don't wind up mining every single bit of it out like there's some here some here this just basically all represents oxygen to me and you might as well use this until you're ready to get on the more sustainable stuff which is going to be electrolyzers which we'll talk about here in just a little bit as you're playing there's going to be more than one source of oxygen though so like these oxygen diffusers are going to do most of the work but you'll notice that i pointed this out earlier which are these storage bins these storage bins are storing polluted dirt and slime for me so that if i mine any of that out especially on the dlc there's maps that are just like all polluted dirt uh and if i get slime from diving into some of these biomes like this i'll just kind of do an example here real fast and uh destroy some of the water here because it's gonna mess up our mess up our uh water down here but whatever if you were to mine some of this slime out you want to go ahead and grab that slime and bring it back because that can be some free oxygen uh yeah we're making a mess this is what happens sometimes but oh well it's not too big of a deal so you have that kind of stuff and this is going to be a second oxygen source that you can take advantage of if you start running low on algae and you're not ready to transition into your electrolyzers yet uh another thing you can do that i've done on other runs before when i was really desperate because i had way too many duplicates on purpose is you could set up something like this uh you could set up some liquid reservoirs [Music] leave spaces in between for deodorizers and by the way the deodorizers are kind of key to this because they will clean any of the polluted oxygen that gets produced from these items that are inside these bins they'll clean the oxygen so that you're not having a big germ outbreak and especially in the dlc from what i've seen so far you will get negative debuffs from your dupes from your duplicates breathing polluted uh oxygen so that's kind of the whole idea with this setup if you were to use polluted water it's kind of the same idea uh polluted water will eventually gas off but you can force it to gas off a little bit faster uh by putting them into bottles and then just letting the bottle sit there so what you can do and this is something that i haven't shown enough of because i think this is really handy is if you happen to dig into an area like this there's this big pool of polluted water rather than kind of like avoiding it or something like that or trying to funnel it down which you can do later one thing you can do right away that will help out your oxygen is you could just build a ladder up into here do something kind of like this and we have all of the protection against any polluted oxygen that's going to come out like that this will put off polluted oxygen very very slowly if you want it to go faster you could set up something really simple like this i'll just build a ladder down there so it's a little bit more like realistic because you'd have to do this with duplicates anyway and i'm just kind of fudging this just to be fast duplicants by the way are still grabbing this slime and running it to these these bins by the way so pay some attention to that i'm just gonna hook this pump up to some power and then i'm gonna have this pump into a bunch of these uh liquid storage reservoirs uh i think they're just called liquid reservoirs but basically what happens i'm gonna super speed this really fast just so we can see the point uh what happens is we'll be pumping a whole bunch of water into these things and we can pump like this whole pool if we want to into one of these reservoirs and as it fills up what you can abuse in this game it's a little bit exploity but that's fine uh is once this thing gets filled up you can see it filling up here you can actually deconstruct it and it will drop a bottle of polluted water out and that bottle of polluted water will produce a lot of polluted oxygen for you and i need to test to see if this is doable but on some maps it may be possible to never need to build electrolyzers because of how strong this is now this does require a big need on sand and that would also imply a lot of other things so i'm not going to recommend this as like your final solution but this can keep you alive for quite a while if you happen to use your water this way i will be showing the ultimate setup that you'll want to use to eventually deal with the lack of oxygen and water problems that you may be encountering so yeah this is not the final solution but this is definitely a bridge that can get you there just to complete this if i deconstruct that now we have a bottle of polluted water here and if i just hover over this you can see it's emitting polluted oxygen at about 200 grams per second just this bottle alone is gonna roughly feed about two duplicates worth of oxygen uh until it runs out it will slowly gas off meaning that it's gonna produce oxygen more and more slowly so you can't just go ahead and rebuild these reservoirs here and just refill them and keep deconstructing them this is not a lot of maintenance but this is a great cheap option to get oxygen if you are really desperate uh up until your electrolyzers are ready so definitely very cool thing you can do there now the final solution i keep uh talking about it here a little bit and i'm not going to go too crazy into detail because i do have a whole separate video about producing oxygen but the electrolyzer setup is just so fundamental that you'll need to get used to building something like this um but however i don't want you to just rush into your electrolyzer setup because i've kind of demonstrated the amount of water that you might have at this point in the game and i don't think that using any of your starting water water on electrolyzers is a good idea you need to be able to conserve this water for quite a while there's a lot of strategies you can do to do this you could start refining some of this polluted water here but it is more efficient just to gas it off into uh oxygen this way then to actually start purifying it and then sending it into electrolyzers from the standpoint of time and from the standpoint of heat and stuff like that this is basically a no heat option to generating a whole bunch of oxygen for you and a very low power solution but eventually we'll need to get on electrolyzers but the point is don't use any of this water don't use any of the standing water you can find unless it's like a lot of salt water or something like that what i would really encourage you to do and i'm just going to keep talking about this quite a bit keep digging around the map and keep keep going out as far as you can go until you start hitting the edges and the reason why is because beyond this small little area there is way more stuff that you need to have access to if you're going to survive the mid game from a power from a water from a resource standpoint in general so i'd really encourage you to continue to dig i'm just going to simulate this so that we can see a whole bunch of stuff around the map and i'll show you why this matters so if you're just looking at this at a glance it's like okay cool you found some ice uh you found some other biomes you maybe found some salt water but there's gonna be very very valuable stuff that you could find in here and we'll start looking for it here in just a second just to demonstrate so let's say we get all the way out on the map we reveal a whole bunch of stuff and here now we start finding some of the good stuff this is saltwater geyser this is something that's pretty easy to find it's usually visible and the good thing here is that this is basically just free water so if you have an electrolyzer set up you need to capture something like this and you need this water to continually feed some of your setups that are going to be ultimately constantly consuming water well that was three adverbs in a row i think uh anyway uh yeah so you definitely want to get out and explore if you find stuff that's buried like this this could potentially also be some kind of water producing geyser so you could use a little bit of a trick to reveal what that is if you just go to your priorities go to the top priority and make that the top priority because there's something behind here it'll tell you what it is this is a water geyser this is amazing these are things that you definitely want to capture so you can start producing oxygen from them so because this is a water geyser this is going to be the one that i use we don't have to spend any time cleaning our water and turning into something else because you will need to purify this and turn it into regular water and not salt water before you start producing oxygen from it but something like this water geyser is awesome so you take a look at this this water geyser produces about 10 kilograms a second it's intermittent but this is a lot of water to the point that you could potentially push all of your oxygen needs for a long time off of something like this so let me just go ahead and dig this out really fast i'll show you very quickly i do have other videos on how to capture this in a little bit more detail but i'll just do this really fast and if you want to check out those other videos as far as optimal ways to capture some of this stuff go ahead and check that out but what i would do is i would set up some kind of pump here this will need to be able to resist the heat by the way pay to pay attention to that it set up some kind of automation to only pump it out if it was worth pumping out like if there's enough water in there to begin with and the water that comes out of here i'd probably pump it through some uh insulated pipes and then i would send it down to some kind of electrolyzer setup somewhere and let's just build this really quickly because this is going to be like your final solution for oxygen uh through most runs so i'm just gonna go ahead and delete like a big block here as the game like super lags when i do that let's turn this down there we go so i'm just going to build an example set up here really fast to show you how these electrolyzers work and how you keep them running so what you can do is you'll probably want to use some insulated tiles there's a whole bunch of different uh discussion you could have about which ones to use but if you just start off with any that's totally fine and you want to build a few different chambers here so i'm going to build these about four tall because that's usually what i do for anything that i'm building i'll also build it to certain specs but we're not going to worry too much about that right now and then what i would do is i would reserve a few more levels build them with mesh tiles something like this and by the way i'm going to also say this and i say this every once in a while the setups that i'm going to show you how to build here are just going to be if you've never done this before there are more optimal ways to do this as far as like how much space you consume and stuff like that if you're interested in optimizing every little thing out of it then that's totally fine you can do that i'm just going to show you a quick and dirty way to do some of this stuff so what i would do is i would start off by building a section that looks something like this the reason why is because when you have these electrolyzers you need a few things that are going to be able to support them so i'm going to build a couple of electrolyzers here depending on how many duplicates you have this could be enough but i'm just gonna build it like this and then for each one of these electrolyzers i'm gonna build two pumps or maybe one if i have enough of them uh the idea here is that when the electrolyzer consumes water it turns it into oxygen and hydrogen and it produces this much oxygen per second these pumps can also only suck out that much per second so you need about two of these pumps for every one one electrolyzer roughly it also will produce hydrogen so the bottom level is going to be where i suck out the oxygen the middle level is where both of those are going to get produced and the hydrogen up at the top is just going to be what's like the the byproduct of it it can also be used for power which we'll talk about as well so what i'm going to do is i'm just going to hook this straight up to the water geyser um you will want to store this in some way by the way so i'm just going to do that really fast just so that if the water geyser is erupting intermittently you have a way to store this i'll just throw down a few of these real fast and you can do more of this more than this again i'm not being overly scientific i'm just trying to demonstrate the idea for players that have never done this before so you'll have something like this let's go ahead and just set up some cheater uh power generators here for the time being but i'm gonna show you a little trick that comes with these electrolyzer setups also there we go then you have something like this so the idea is that when you started getting water and i'll just go ahead and fill this up with water for the time being so that we can see whoa molten uranium what is this crazy stuff coming out all right anyway water it's going to come out of here pretty hot as far as i understand in fahrenheit it's about 200 degrees something like this so we just go ahead and fill this up and set this to if we detect any water above a certain amount it doesn't need to be anything scientific i just don't want to waste power pumping water from there if there's not enough to work to warrant uh pumping it so i'll hook this all up to power and now we have a setup that is pumping freshly made water this is totally renewable water i'm getting it for free i don't have to do anything on the regular to keep this up the water is going to be pumped out and it's going to be pumped straight into these tanks which will then flow out of this pipe and then straight into my electrolyzer setups once i have this running this is going to start producing oxygen for me and you'll notice that i have this all encased in this area and that's because if i'm producing oxygen from this very hot uh water that comes out of this geyser it's going to produce hot oxygen also which by the way i should probably build this out of something that can resist this heat that's something else you need to pay attention to that i should have covered but we'll just rebuild this really fast you want to build this out of gold amalgam that's one of the more available things that you will have to resist the heat for you and the same thing goes for any of the gas pumps so we'll just go ahead and throw these down real fast something like this and like this so it'll be producing really hot oxygen which means that if you blow this back into your base it's going to be too hot for your dupes to live it's going to be too hot for your food it could disrupt some of your ranching that you have going on here but this is the basic setup meaning that there's only a couple more things for us to do one is we need to actually pump the oxygen out so i'm going to set up something like this for the pumps that are supposed to grab oxygen and the reason i have this coming at the bottom and at the top is because the bottom is going to be only pumping out oxygen because it's naturally going to drift down compared to hydrogen the hydrogen will all drift up so we'll deal with the hydrogen here in just a second well what i would do with these is once i have two of them hooked up together i probably run them up to this top chamber and this top chamber is going to be where i cool the oxygen before i actually send it out into my base so that i'm sending out nice and temperate oxygen i'm not burning down my base from making oxygen that's too hot and there's a whole bunch of different cooling methods you could use here which we're going to cover later in the video but spoiler alert it's going to be some kind of water that is polluted or salty or something like that that is very cold we'll be chilling in a tank like this and we will talk about this later so uh don't worry too much about the details of that yet and then what i would do is i would probably snake it through a pipe or something like this before actually blowing it out into my base something like this and you could also route the the vents down into your base closer to where they're going to be living so there's a bunch of different ways you can do this but something like this ought to be fine and then i'll just route it i don't know down into here sure whatever so there that handles most of the oxygen production a couple of other small details you'll probably want to do you'll probably want to put these pumps on atmos sensors and that's just to make sure that these are not running at all times so that you are conserving your power and i would just set this to somewhere above 500 grams and the reasoning here is because these are going to suck out more oxygen than this can produce and i don't want this to be running if it's only sending or pumping out like a tiny bit of oxygen at a time i want it to be pumping out as rich of pockets of oxygen as i can lastly the other thing we need to worry about is the byproduct here if i just let this run as is then we're going to run into a problem where everything's going to get stuffed up because we have a whole bunch of hydrogen in here or we're just going to be blowing hydrogen into our base so that can be a problem also by the way the effects of the cooling the oxygen is coming out of here at about 90 degrees you can see all the other measurements as well it's getting pretty hot you don't want to blow this back into your base once it passes through this cold water if you're using these radiant pipes it cools it way back down to a temperature that's really cold this is basically like air conditioning for your base um but yeah let's move on to the hydrogen so we can close this out really fast the hydrogen you'd want to run into a hydrogen generator you can also run it into some uh overflow tanks or something like this and it'll be a little bit messy and a little bit fast about this just so that we can move on to other stuff but basically you would have something like these gas reservoirs you could store it this way you don't have to store it this way if you don't want to but the idea here is you're gonna run this into a bunch of these reservoirs so that you can store this for whenever you need to produce power from us you're kind of getting some free power off of running a setup like this and if you set this all up correctly especially with the automation that's down here you'll actually generate more power from the setup than you will require so very cool stuff that you can do with this and i'll just go ahead and hook this up to a battery um if i were to hook this up to a smart battery that would probably be best so that we're only generating power when we really need it again i'm just being fast about this stuff i have a whole video about all these different subjects so feel free to check those out if you need more detail i'll just set this to turn off when the battery is at about 80 percent turn on if it's anywhere lower than 20 and there you go the last thing we're probably going to need is to make sure that we're not pumping oxygen out of here through our hydrogen vent you can see that there is oxygen getting mixed in there and i don't want to send it into these because it'll break it so the last little bit of power you'll probably our automation you'll probably want to do and you can do this in a bunch of different ways i'm just going to do it in a super cheap way of saying that if there is a hydrogen like here and it's been there for a while then i'll know i can turn this pump on so i'm going to use a gas element sensor to sense if there's any hydrogen maybe i'll send it through like a filter gate or something to make sure that it's been there for a little while so something like this and this will make it so that the this has to be soaking in hydrogen for however long i specify this for let's say like 60 seconds before we'll actually turn on the pump to make sure that only hydrogen is coming out of here so this is a very rudimentary very simple way to set something like this up but once you capture something like this you might need more than one source to be fair once you capture something like this and you can send it into a setup like this now your oxygen needs are totally satisfied you can start even deleting some of the other diffusers that you have because you should be capable of producing enough oxygen for the duplicates that you have just with these two machines and just with this number of duplicates so this is pretty much how to deal with your oxygen long term and again i'm gonna i'm gonna say this a bunch of different times if you wind up watching this whole video you want to make sure you're not taking on too many dupes before you reach this point and this is a point where i would really just call sustainability because if i have sustainability on my power and everything like that and if i have sustainability on my water then this is going to run unimpeded forever as long as i have the supporting things that i need and that's kind of the whole idea of this is how to get past that mid game how to be fully sustainable all that fun stuff so as far as oxygen is concerned this is how you get to be sustainable um so i'm gonna just go ahead and stop with the oxygen stuff here i have a whole other video that talks a lot about other oxygen options but if you're getting stuck in the mid game yeah this is definitely what you want to do all right let's move on to the next thing that i think is going to kill players let's jump back to the older base so we can see what i did wrong in that one and how we could fix it for a better run so that one's going to be about food so let's jump over there now oh man we're back on the broken down base back to the mess back to seeing what we did wrong here uh let's talk about the second item which is going to be one of the most common ways that new players die and that is can't produce enough food likely because your dirt or water is depleting there could be other reasons as well which we'll get to uh so let's take a look at what i did wrong in this run uh again i'm gonna harp on this i have 60 duplicates or 59 one of them i think died in one of my other sections of the video but we're back to where he wasn't dead so hooray uh yeah i have way too many duplicates here which means that i need to grow an insane amount of food to try to keep them up and running and the food sources that i'm using are really not very practical uh the blossoms are okay the mealwood's okay um the peppers are not that great but the most important thing that i am skipping here is i'm skipping an efficient way to get totally renewable food what i mean by that is that the food that's like bristle blossoms could be considered renewable if you had enough water for it but you do need to produce water that's cold enough to be able to manage this kind of stuff and i'm doing an okay job of that this is at the time i think when i figured out that i could use ice to cool a lot of the water needs that i have oh this is what one of them died from they got stuck here and they got they got burned to death uh yes that can definitely be a problem i did mention dirt and dirt is definitely a not very renewable resource in the sense that you could try to get more dirt but i just find that to be a big waste of time and energy if you can avoid it so i still am growing mealwood which does take dirt in order to grow but you'll notice that in this run my dirt is very low this is not going to last me for very much longer and i really just to be clear don't think it's worthwhile to go try to make new dirt i think once you start running out of dirt you should just move on and grow some better food so blossoms are kind of a decent mid game bridge if you have some water that you can spend especially any of your starting water if you need more water you can reproduce it with what i'm doing here so that's at least going okay um the other problem here is that your base could overheat and this is a big problem with a lot of the earlier foods that they only have certain temperature ranges here this range isn't very good this is saying current but yeah this is the temperature range but it's still like a little bit above freezing of water to about like a hot room temperature is where both of these starter plants can grow anything beyond that is going to be too hot and i'll see a lot of people dying to overheating which i'll talk about a little bit later but that could be another reason why you're not able to produce food um another thing in this one that's been a big problem is i have a lot of power problems and that can be a problem if i can't like run my lights for example or if i can't power anything that's keeping my food preserved um water is based for water food is basically a very simple uh input and output system so like if i put in resources i'm gonna get out food and i'm gonna only need a certain amount for the duplicates that i have so if i'm over producing food or if i'm wasting it by letting it rot away in my ration boxes or not powering my refrigerators or something like that that can definitely be something wrong here so this has a lot of problems also by the way i think some of this is due to the way that the game restored because a lot of my transformers are are messed up and they're not powering things they're supposed to so this work this looks worse than it actually is but it's still pretty bad so yeah those are kind of the things that i i'm messing up here and when i do say like fully sustainable food i think i didn't finish that thought here what i mean is like for example here on these drecos i could be getting a lot of free meat by just encouraging these guys to produce as many eggs as possible and then moving those eggs somewhere where i can then kill the critters like very regimented uh and get meat from them which requires basically no resources if you have something like this which is what i'll talk about here in just a bit so yeah those are the ways that i messed up on this run let's go back to our typical setup for like a beginning of the mid game i guess maybe cycle 100ish let's look at what we should do the correct way if we wanted to uh survive the mid game when it came to food so i'll see you there alrighty we're back here on the kind of like ideal mid game base uh just an example one that i set up if you happen to skip to this chapter this is basically a setup of what i would imagine a new player's mid game base might look like assuming everything was going well um i'm not going to review all the different components of it we'll just talk about the components that are important for food so let me rewind in time just a little bit rather than assuming we're at like cycle 100 let's assume that we're at cycle maybe like 10. uh by the way let me turn this on let's say that we're still on our basic farm tiles oh man we can't do that ooh we gotta hear gaussman let's assume that we're still in our basic farm tiles and let's assume that we are still uh growing mealwood on all these so let's assume that we're still doing something like this and we're using mealwood because that's the first thing that's available that doesn't require a ton of setup i would definitely encourage you to stay on this mealwood for as long as you can tolerate and again like i was saying in the last section i think once you start getting low on dirt it's not worth it to try to retain this mealwood i think it's better if you try to go for a different food solution uh after this is done only because making new dirt can be kind of a long process and can be kind of annoying to keep up also if you're expecting to keep your colony off of running off renewable dirt i think that's pretty silly there's other things that are a lot more renewable than that so that's when i'd say the transition but the thing that's important about any of your food transitions is you want to make sure you're actually using your resources well so if i'm using dirt on this i don't want to be using dirt on other things that can be very very expensive with the exception of maybe your outhouses your outhouses you will use dirt it's not going to be a huge amount but it will be something so if you wanted to switch off of that you can um it's not a problem that i think is like a top shelf problem for getting in or out of the mid game so yeah let's say you're using up your dirt let's say you have it open here or something like this and once you get down to maybe like 30 or 40 tons of it or something like that that's probably when you want to start considering switching off and the thing that you'll want to switch on to is going to be one of two things it's either going to be bristle blossoms which is what i have here or it's going to be barbecue via ranching most of the time especially when i was a newer player i found that i needed to switch onto bristle blossoms so we're going to be focusing a lot on that in the video before we get there let's talk about resource uh conservation mainly because that's gonna be a big deal for a lot of newer players and something that's not immediately obvious so we already talked about conserving your dirt let's talk about ways that you could potentially waste it and also waste it on uh wasting water which is gonna be the next thing you're gonna use to grow food so if i were to build something like this which can be very tempting of a new player you could see this and be like oh there's food let's build some some mush bars the problem is that every single mush bar wastes a lot of dirt and it wastes a lot of water and it really doesn't give you a lot of calories by comparison the amount of dirt that you spend on this is significantly less for much more efficient food quality you're also wasting water which is very precious and i'm going to get into that here in in just a bit another thing to be sure of is also while you're growing this mealwood don't use this to make lice loaf either because you will effectively just be wasting water on pretty low quality food so this building in general this micro musher i'd say just don't even build it at all that's definitely one of the bigger new player traps i would say so don't worry about that but what i would say is that if you use the bridge to get into bristle blossoms these guys also have their own requirements they will take water so you'll need water to keep these things fed um you also will need to maintain a certain temperature which we'll talk about a little bit later as far as the water goes uh on these tara maps in particular usually spawn with a pretty good pocket of water and i've simulated what it's like to effectively start running out of that it may be cycle 150 or something like that by comparison if i was to measure out how much water you'd actually start with and if you got it all into one pool it'd probably be something like this it's going to be quite a bit um so this is also something you're going to want to conserve because this is going to be how you're feeding your plants for the next little while and more importantly this is going to be water that's already starting off at a pretty good temperature for bristle blossom so this is again something i would really ration um things you don't want to spend it on is you don't want to spit it on your electrolyzers yet which we already covered you want your electrolyzers to be running only off of totally renewable water so don't spend it on that we already talked about the two items of cooking that are here that you don't want to spend it on that's good uh you also probably don't want to spend it on these water coolers you're going to use these water coolers for the great hall and you don't actually have to have this enabled in order to still get the room bonus and that's pretty much all they're for so make sure you're disabling that as well there's other ways you could potentially waste water but it's not going to be anything overly significant i would just keep in mind that if you are using water and especially your starting water you want to stretch this out and make it last for as long as possible so let's say we're on these bristle blossoms these bristle blossoms are pretty straightforward they just take some water being pumped into them from a source the water should be of a adequate temperature for whatever this requires you want to make sure that you keep your eye on that and you do need to light them which is not a big deal either just hook it up to some kind of power this is going to sustain you for kind of a long time and this is one of the easier corners to turn going from mealwood to bristol blossoms however staying on bristol blossoms and going into your next food source is where i died a lot and that's i think where a lot of other new players kind of get stuck because it's not very clear immediately that these things have temperature requirements and it's not necessarily the temperature of the air it's the temperature of everything so if you start feeding it more expensive uh or sorry not more expensive more hot water that could potentially overheat these as well and cause them to not grow so those can be a pretty big problem as well uh you and if we need to recycle some colder water or generate some colder water let's talk about that so this was the first thing that kind of blew my mind uh when i was playing this game is that i could actually generate cold water and i couldn't figure out how for the longest time so what i did is i started seeing something like this and i was like oh cool steam vent this is going to produce water for me the problem is that this produces it at a very high temperature so if i were just to take this and pump it straight into my blossoms my blossoms would die and then i'd be out of food and be like oh what just happened and that's what happens uh you're feeding water that's too hot so if you want to continue to feed these things the right temperature of water what i've eventually figured out is that you can use this you can mine out some of this ice you can carry the ice to a hot uh pool of water you can turn that into colder water and then that can be your new source for these bristle blossoms until you get something more sustainable set up there's a lot of different ways you can do this i'm not going to go crazy about this but let's just pretend that we found one of these cool steam vents because this is one of the first things that you find maintaining these can be a little bit of a problem so actually on second thought i'm going to say to probably not do this uh only because i don't want to direct new players at using that now that i'm thinking back to my experiences of this as a new player i struggled a lot with taming these so don't worry about those for right now what i would do is continue to explore for some other water sources and we saw this earlier if we were looking at the earlier section we saw this saltwater geyser this is something that's going to be a little bit more reasonable because it's a little bit easier to work with in the steam events it's also going to produce a lot more water so i would recommend something like this but in order to feed to these bristle blossoms we're going to need to do two things and that is one make it regular water and not salt water but also cool it down to a temperature that we can use so what i would do is i would try to find somewhere that's near one of these ice biomes and again i'm going to be very kind of quick and dirty about this this would obviously take a lot longer and a lot more effort in a real game so i'm just going to go ahead and reveal this really fast so what i would do is i would have some kind of tank of water that i would start to build it's going to expect water that comes from this and start mixing it with some of this ice and i'd build it somewhere near the ice biome so it's easy for them to fill up again you don't have to do things this way but this is what i found very successful for me as a new player and i think when i've recommended this to other new players as well they've been like oh that's a really cool idea and they start to see a decent amount of success with it if you can skip this phase altogether and go to a later phase where you're producing only barbecue that's ultimately the end game but i found that i needed this when i was a new player for sure so what i would do is i would have something that is just a pool of water again i'd probably use some kind of insulated tiles and i'd make it you know maybe like this big or something like that so let's do this uh you could put a door on this if you really wanted to you don't have to but this is going to be where we're going to be collecting water and cooling it using that ice so let me go ahead and just set this to open let's say we have like a ladder that goes down here and then what you want to do is you want to put some storage bins down in this water maybe something like this uh you don't have to put a ton of them and you can also control the access to this using this air or these doors or whatever if the water starts to get too cold but i would have it ask for ice so what will happen is if you come in here let me actually do this all a little bit more appropriately let's say it looks something like this where you put in a door and maybe another door maybe some insulated tiles just to try to help it retain the temperature in there a little bit i'll talk about the other way you can do this by the way if you want to i've just found this way to always be easier so what you'd want to do with the duplicate is you come mining in here and you eventually start hitting some of these pockets of ice you can also start digging upwards with these ladders so that if you were to mine something else out all of the ice that you mined would just fall down to the bottom and be more accessible for you but eventually you'll get these pockets or these like big chunks of ice and i would have these storage bins asking for it so let me just spawn a duplicate out here actually ah no we'll give them access whatever uh let's just do this real quick and dirty there we go should be able to walk until here there we go nice and messy but you know what if it works then it works so i'd have it set up something like this and then once my duplicates have access to it i would go to this box i would say i want ice and only regular ice by the way not polluted ice that'll produce polluted water i'm going to only ask for a small amount let's say like 1 000 kilograms this can hold up to 20 tons so if i'm only asking for 120th of that that'll mean that the ice is going to melt faster and also have more surface area if i want to spread it out amongst a bunch more bins so as for the actual hot water in the renewable water let's go ahead and capture this like we did before i'm not going to go too far into detail about exactly how to do this i do have a whole separate video about all this kind of stuff once again but the basics are throw some kind of pump in there throw some kind of automation to make sure that i'm only pumping it if it's worthwhile i'm going to grab an insulated pipe and i'm going to run that water down to a place that's near where i want to start cooling it and because this is salt water we have to actually refine this into usable regular water um so let's go ahead and drop a desalinator [Music] and let's have that desalinator run into here and then down into our tank and we'll get this all running here in just a second let's go ahead and drop a cheater power generator because we want to do this fast hook it up to power and then also set up our automation i only want this to pump if there's a good amount of water in there so i want to make sure it's above some quantity so that i'm not wasting power pumping it when it doesn't need to be pumped just for the sake of speeding this up i'm gonna go ahead and have this filled up with some of this hot water so let's go ahead and sample this uh that water is way too cold it comes out a lot hotter than that sure whatever let's do that all right and then i'm just gonna go ahead and fill so let's say that this has been erupting for a little while and we have some water in here we're going to go ahead and pump it down it's going to be pumped out into our desalinator and our desalinator is going to drop it into this tank and it will drop right on top of the boxes that should contain ice so we'll see kind of both of those happening at the same time so my duplicates are coming over here they're grabbing the ice and they're leaving to go on break because they're trolling me really hard so that's very nice of them uh let's super speed this so that they come back and do their job but yeah i can't just directly pump this out uh and feed it straight in my blossoms that's way too hot so when they come over here we'll hopefully see it melt pretty quickly oh we want to make sure to build this out of something that can resist the heat as well something that i'm routinely forgetting apparently i want to build this out of gold amalgam so it doesn't overheat because the water that we're dealing with is very hot all right let's speed this up get them past their bathroom breaks and stuff here we go all right they're back so we're gonna start loading up these bins filled with ice and once they've put the ice in there you can see when the ice comes in contact with this hot water it's gonna start heating up and it will eventually melt i don't know if i'll be able to simulate this fast enough to eventually melt one block but maybe maybe we can check back on this too but the result should eventually be some cold water that i could feed into my blossoms when you're ready for that you can go ahead and drop a pump and you could put this pump on a sensor to make sure you're not pumping out hot water so let's go ahead and put this on a thermo sensor and say this is only allowed to pump water out if the water is below i don't know let's say 70 degrees fahrenheit somewhere in the middle of its range so for celsius you can definitely translate that somewhere in between the numbers that show up here in whatever temperature scale you're used to so right now it's too hot so i would not be pumping it out it's at 176 we've got a lot of cooling to go but this is why it's getting set getting the setup earlier is important so that by the time uh you start to run out of your natural water you can replace it with the water you just manufactured and kind of hook it into your system like that when it's time this should ideally be happening as you're running out of water and this water system is going to be something that's going to be useful for a lot of other things throughout the run as well so this isn't the only thing that it's useful for but this is the basic idea of how to manufacture that water that's going to keep your food up and running for a little while what's this at yeah it's only at negative 10. we've got a little ways to go before it starts to melt so maybe we'll check back on that all right so let's talk about uh storing your food we could produce all the food in the world but if we are actually throwing that food away and it just uh disintegrates into nothing then we effectively just wasted it so there's a couple of uh different ways you can do this i'm not going to go into hyper detail on this and this is something that people have talked about in the past uh but what you can do initially is you can store it in a area like this which will if you store it in a little like reservoir it will eventually collect um carbon dioxide in this area that will help keep your food fresh for a lot longer um this is the idea here is that you also have a meter let me clear up some stuff on the floor here the idea here is you also have a meter of knowing how much extra food you have space for if this meter is ever full you definitely want to calm down on the amount of food that you're producing because if it can't fit in here it's just going to sit on the ground it'll eventually rot which means that you just spent dirt or water on garbage like you literally just threw it away it's not anything that they can eat so it's just wasted and that's another way that a lot of newer players can get into trouble is by over producing food and not storing it correctly if you need to store it in a something other than this or if you want to keep it fresher for longer or kill germs that might be on your food there's a whole separate tutorial about that i am not the most opposed to just dropping one refrigerator if you need to so you could just do something like this and set it to accept whatever um that can be an option as well if you want to do it that way i don't have any big complaints about that i would just not go overboard on these refrigerators because having like three or four of them would mean that you would need a lot of power to push this thing which is not super useful if you can find a cheaper way to do it all right let's uh check on our water here real quickly and see if anything is about to melt no we got a little ways to go the final boss of food though is gonna be meat and barbecue um something i should mention here by the way is that anything that you grow especially these blossoms you can cook to both get better food quality out of it but also increases the calories a little bit so you don't have to grow as much and you don't have to spend as much water so i'd recommend cooking both the blossoms and the barbecue that are about to come up but once you get into the mid game area you'll a minimum need some kind of ranching going on so that you can keep your power running so real quick uh side note we're going to jump back to this in the power section but one of the first power sources you're going to have is cold generators but coal is not a renewable resource but you can get a lot more coal by feeding stuff to these hatches and these hatches will poop out coal allowing you to run your power a side effect of any of these hatches though is that if your hatches die they will turn into meat and you can then cook that meat into barbecue which is a recipe right here and then that can be food so in theory if you're ranching enough of these they'll be laying enough eggs so that you can then uh turn that those eggs and the stuff that comes out of those eggs into meat and then into barbecue all without really spending too many resources here uh the resources you'd really be spending is just random stuff you'd find around the map because these hatches can eat all kinds of junk so let's look at their diets they can eat a bunch of foods that you want wouldn't want to feed to them but you could feed them you don't want to feed them dirt or clay or anything like that but you can feed them sandstone or you could feed them sedimentary rock and if you look at how much i have of those things i have a lot 316 tons of sandstone 15 tons of sedimentary rock which you're only going to grow as you continue to dig out there's a lot of different things you can feed these guys and there's a whole bunch of nuance to what you can get out of them they're very useful but for your food this is one of the critter types that could really help you stabilize your food in the long term the only way this really works though in a large scale is if you have some way of removing these eggs from the area because if there's too many eggs and too many critters in here they will stop reproducing as quickly you can see this one's not increasing at all because there's too many eggs and too many critters in here right now that's where shipping and stuff like that really starts to come into effect i'm not going to go too far into detail on how to do something like this i'm just going to put this idea in your head and then i will be producing a video later or maybe by the time you're watching this there already is a video about this but an efficient way to gather eggs from here and turn it into meat uh in a separate room but the whole idea behind it is basically if you have something like this and you fill this up with some kind of water it doesn't really matter what it is or some kind of liquid i guess uh hatches and a lot of other critters cannot breathe under water so if i were to take a bunch of these eggs let me just spawn a few of them if i were to take some of these eggs let's just grab a hatch egg since we've already seen that before uh here we go and if i were to drop it in here and if i had some way to put the eggs there then as soon as something grew out of this which they still will incubate underwater by the way as soon as something hatched out of this it would drown and it would turn into meat so that's definitely an option to generate some meat for you and really quickly you can go ahead and ship some of this stuff out [Music] using the shipping system if you wanted to ship any of the eggs that they laid so that as soon as they lay the eggs if you need to remove the eggs out of here you could just ship them down into a pool of water like this and then as soon as they hatch they will die um there's also another way you could do this and this is the way it will typically do but i'm not going to go too far into detail um i will ship them to a separate room so that if i need to move more of that critter back into this room because these ones will eventually die of old age which is here uh then i can pick them up from here and run them back and then any of the excess i can move down into a room that fills up with water every day and that i drown them so that's the idea behind this as far as how to produce a lot of meat but it's likely you're not only gonna you're not gonna get all of this from hatches it's likely you're going to get this from something else so i'm going to show another type of critter that you can ranch that i think is really good for this so let me go ahead and dig a bunch of this out and i'm just going to create a really quick chamber that's not going to be perfect but it's just going to generate the idea the other type of critter that's really important in the mid game and especially in the later game once you need to start producing like plastic and read fibers and stuff is drecos let me see if i can find one really quickly here we go if you can ranch these these are like the ultimate for food because you can feed these at literally no cost other than duplicate time to ranch them so what i would do for something like this is i would probably create a section of insulated tiles oh no i'm gonna have to destroy these let's do this ah sure again i'm not gonna be too scientific about this i'm just gonna kind of approximate for the sake of speed so what i would probably do for these dracos which tall is i would create a chamber that looks something like this and notice i'm using tiles here because i do need to make it warm for them to be able to eat the food that grows in there and then i would make some kind of entrance to here that is uh airtight and the cheapest way to do this is to create a small entrance that looks i don't know something like this and then fill it up with just a little bit of water like that and then uh what i would do on the inside here is i would make sure that this is all chlorine and the reason why is because these things will eat just straight up plants like they'll eat a few plants that grow if you take a look at these these is one of the things that they eat these bomb lilies they don't take anything all they have to be is in chlorine and that's it so if i were to set up a chamber that looks something like this let me just go ahead and rebuild this really fast i'll go ahead and drop a bunch of farm tiles here so i can put the plants in that i want and then i will drop something like that drop in some doors so that i have separate spaces that i could actually keep them because part of the ranching is you need to have a grooming station and a drop off so i can move drecco's in there and groom them so that they lay eggs pretty effectively then i would plant balm lily seeds in here which i wonder if i have any yep and find some way to flood this room with chlorine whether that's using bleach stone or if you can find a vent or something like that that produces chlorine you can use that well let's just kind of skip past a lot of that nuance and you can kind of find a good way to do that for yourself if you want to i'd flood it with chlorine i'd need to make sure it's pretty warm because these bomb lilies need to be in a kind of warm environment so let's say you wind up with something like this and then if we drop the rest of the stations that we need in here this ought to be enough to start ranching these drecos it's to the point that they will start dropping eggs every once in a while and i can do the same thing with the shipping where i ship the draco eggs into some kind of setup like this where any of the excess drecos are then killed and turned into meat this is a full loop of all i have to do now is take care of these drecos they'll produce enough eggs for me that i have enough food to live on for quite a while uh only because i'm taking care of these drecos these bomb blowies grow for free meaning that i'm not really putting any resources into keeping these drecos fed they're just kind of eating the drecos as they grow and i'm just shipping the eggs out that they produce so this is kind of like the final boss in combination with shipping and in combination with some kind of drowning tank to produce meat which can eventually be shipped up here and turned in barbecue that means that i won't need any more cool water for my blossoms i won't need any more mealwood i could be entirely on barbecue and if i wanted to do it only with the drecos or i could do it with the combination of that and hatches that'll take care of beyond food for basically the rest of the game uh so those are those are very very good as well i want to check on our ice by the way it's almost done maybe we could super speed that but yeah this is this is a setup i'll produce a lot um if you want to be a little bit more fancy with something like this i'm only going to mention this for a second uh because i'm going to produce a second uh video about this but basically these dracos also have a side effect of being able to be sheared to get either reed fibers or plastic off of them which can be important later in the game you can put also some hydrogen in here which can be a little bit annoying to manage but the hydrogen can live like in a spot like that and the dracos will eventually regenerate their scales oh you need to make this airtight by the way which is something that i didn't do because we're being sloppy [Music] there we go so if you were to have something like this you'd have some hydrogen there the drecos would eventually regenerate their scales so this is not the only way to set this up i typically will skip the hydrogen though because you can get it by having this intermediate room where you ship all the eggs to and then once they turn into adults you can share them and then kill them um but yeah that's that's kind of the final boss of food there's a lot of other food types you could mess around with if you really want to like these peppers uh you could mess around with sleep weed if you really wanted to or you could just grab the naturally growing stuff but i just would not recommend that i think this is the easiest and most uh proficient way to do it uh so this is this is what i would recommend you also need suits to go in here by the way which i might as well set up really fast which is gonna be also why the reed fibers are important because you need those to make these suits so let's say you have something like this some suits would go in here your duplicates would only be allowed to enter if they had these basically like spacesuits where they can breathe and work in hot environments and stuff uh but yeah this is pretty much it and again i do need to make sure this chlorine is warm so if you need to pipe some like warm water through here or use some space heaters or something to keep this warm enough that can also be a thing but yeah that's basically the final boss of food uh sustainability and at that point if i got there i would just dig up all my other food i would be only on barbecue i would not need to do anything else i could repurpose this area for other things maybe like fancy bedrooms or maybe a storage area for a lot of stuff maybe i want to move some production buildings in here and i can repurpose this area for something else but the point is that if i eventually get to there i don't actually need to worry about my water even though this is a useful stepping stone by the way some of this is melting so we missed the initial melt let's see what happens with this one and we'll watch the temperature here we'll note that we're pumping in water that's almost 200 degrees the water that's right here from where it just melted has already dropped by almost 100 degrees because of the ice that we put in so you can kind of see the power of the cooling on here and kind of see it in action but let's go ahead and super speed this so we can see what's going on so it's going to melt out of here basically what will happen is it'll just generate a bunch of water approximately one ton of water and it will generate at whatever the temperature was of the ice by the time it melted and mix it in with the regular water so if you just watch the temperature down there when this melts you'll actually see the effects get this back to super speed which should happen here any second i'll just sit here quietly and suspense as it happens hey stop messing up my temperature all right we're at 129 right now fahrenheit so let's just see what happens when it melts there you go you saw it instantly drop if you want to go back and look at that but instantly drop down to about 70 and now it's mixing around with all the other water and just lowering the temperature so eventually you'll get to a point and if you wanted to limit the water that was coming in here you could also put the automation on this vent to turn it on and off if you don't want any more hot water to come in here so that's definitely an option as well but yeah this is the general idea your food progression is typically going to be from mealwood once you start running low on dirt start growing some of these bristle blossoms if you don't have the infrastructure for your meat yet if you do have the infrastructure for your meat you can skip this bristle blossom step but i've always found it to be useful uh and then eventually meat is gonna be the last thing that you really need to get set up who's suffocating what's going on okay sure whatever let's just fill this up so don't have to suffer anymore there we go so yeah as far as long-term sustainability on food and especially crossing that mid-game threshold once you're on all barbecue you're basically done you shouldn't need to worry about food for the rest of the game so that's pretty much that uh let's jump back to the busted old base and talk about power which is the number three reason that i see a lot of uh new players dying so let's hop over there all right we're back in the busted old base uh looking at reason number three as to why new players die in the mid game and that's going to be because they can't produce enough power this is definitely the one i was struggling with the most on this run and this one has probably the furthest sweeping effects of problems because everything is kind of dependent on power by the mid game and if you can't push what you've built then you're in a lot of trouble so let's look at what's going on in this base uh the primary thing is i just don't have enough power generators and it's mainly by type so if i really wanted to try to revive this run i could increase the amount of hatches i was farming and try to bolster up my coal power but that's only going to go so far i've kind of missed an opportunity already by not going out and getting other power sources by now so we take a look around the map this is going to be one of the biggest things that's going to bridge something for you in the mid game and that is natural gas and i'm not harvesting it at all uh mainly because once again i have too many duplicates and i'm not digging enough those are just going to be recurring themes but a lot of maps will spawn with anywhere from one to four of these and these are definitely things that you need to go get if you want to bridge the power gap in the mid game another thing that really pushed me over the edge and something that i'm not doing here is i'm down in the oil biome a little bit but i'm not actually using it for power and that is so tremendously important as well especially if you have a base that's using a lot of power petroleum generators are insanely strong and i think that this run actually could be salvaged pretty not easily but pretty comfortably if i would just start getting my oil flowing and start using that for power and i think if i'm remembering back to this uh fortunately i remember a lot of my experiences with this but i think that i just didn't know about petroleum power by this point and it was definitely in the menu here but as a new player at least for me in particular i was just kind of intimidated by all the options that i had so i could see that they had oil power and i could see that i had natural gas but i just didn't know how it worked so i would get to this point and die because i wasn't using it so that was definitely a big problem for me so yeah definitely what we were doing wrong here uh like i said this run is not as bad as it looks there's a lot of problems with how the game restored these older saves but the bigger problem is still i could maybe salvage it for another you know 20 or 30 cycles if i improved what i have here but ultimately i just need to go in a totally different direction just get more power sources and that's the biggest problem so let's jump into the uh the good run i guess we'll call it now the example run and i'll show you how to kind of bridge from the early-ish to early mid game power sources into the even late game you can get away with this for a long time so let's jump over there really quick all right back at the good base or at least the example one that we've been building up with our previous steps or previous items that i think are killing players in the new game let's talk about how we would set up a good power uh setup here from the mid game and onward so the first thing to make sure of and this is something that you probably want to make sure you're already doing so we'll just start here but make sure that you have a good amount of hatch ranching happening and that you have a set up for your coal so that you can make sure that you are actually not running at a deficit of coal on a regular basis this can be a problem that some new players face and i just wanted to cover this base rather than just assuming everybody already does this some things that you want to make sure with this is use smart batteries smart batteries are going to be a way to make sure you're not burning coal excessively and you'll note that i have power flowing to stuff right now but i'm not burning cold because i'm using a smart battery so there we go battery just got low enough it told my generators to turn back on this is a huge deal and this is something that i think is really easy to overlook but you'll spend you know anywhere from like thirty percent of the cold that you would normally spend if you just let those things run but instead if you're using a smart battery that's one of many automation things that you could use to help save resources and save power so that is essential for you to do if you're not doing that already the other thing i'd really recommend is uh take a look at the setups that you have for power right now and see if there's a cheaper way to do it uh sometimes and i make fun of this a lot but this is actually probably a good time to say that most people that complain about using refrigerators are mostly correct uh in the sense that refrigerator is constantly using power to do something but if you can find a better way to do this whether that's with like chlorine or storing it in a very cold place or even just sitting in this ration box and dealing with any germs that are on it a little bit later you can avoid staying off refrigerators for a little while if you're having power problems so that can help if you're setting up any setups like this where you're running some some kind of pump make sure that it's like an economic reason to use that pump like put it on automation to make sure that you're not pumping out tiny packets and spending a ton of power to move like a few grams of oxygen at a time same thing goes for your ventilation systems i have one set up right now and i've talked about this build a few times basically you'll want a ventilation system sometime in the early game or the mid game to kind of keep all the carbon dioxide and chlorine and everything else out of the air so that you can make your base as breathable and easy to use as possible for your duplicants and not have like a huge layer of carbon dioxide or chlorine or something here but note that this ventilation is on automation once again i'm only running it if i detect something that's down at the bottom of my base that is not oxygen so there's a lot of things that you can do with automation to continually make sure that you are conserving your power and using it correctly and this is why at this phase of the game i only really need these three generators and even still they're not running at least like half the time or more because of the lack of huge power requirements that i have this also goes for don't push yourself into refinement or any kind of cooling tools or anything like that until you have the power to push it that's i think a very critical part where some people start to you know get off the get off track and kind of kill themselves uh or rather kill their bases because they are being a little bit too haphazard about when they're introducing new power consumers so for example if i need to produce cold water running ice in here is pretty much free if i were to use something like an aqua tuner or something like that that's going to take a lot of power so if you take a look at this this thing takes up a tremendous amount of power which can do the same job but it's going to take a lot more to push it so make sure that you understand what you're building before you actually do it that's not to say to not use aqua tuners they are extremely important which we'll talk about later in this video but just pay attention to the things you're doing and see if there's a cheaper way to do it uh for example if this if i were able to find a water geyser instead of a salt water geyser i'd prioritize the water from there first because then i don't need to run a desalinator in order to use it so there's a lot of different efficiencies just look out for small things that you can do to save power because they all do really add up by the end let's talk about what i'd mentioned a little bit in the previous section which is basically getting on to these other power sources if you open up your research panel you can see all the different power sources that are in here and i recommend to get pretty familiar with a lot of this stuff and know what they do so in order here the first ones you'll have access to is this coal and wood burning generator i think the word burner is not your not worthwhile i think i would probably just ignore that uh cold generators are very useful though and they'll last you for a little while this research here is going to be basically all of your mid game options this is going to be your natural gas generator and your petroleum generator and those are going to be the two things that you need to capture before you start thinking about getting up those more expensive machines and more expensive power setups so let's talk about capturing those really fast uh let's find a natural gas guys there's one right here so uh what you need in order to capture this is you need steel first and this means that either you need to go find it or you need to make some so steel is something i will cover in another video all the details on how to make that but basically you're going to use a metal refinery you're going to need some kind of cold liquid to send in there and then hot liquid is going to come out of it so polluted water can work for that really well like some of this stuff on the map if you want to use it and then maybe refine it and send it into your oxygen system or something there's a few ways you can do that but the easier way to do it is if you've already dug up to the surface to vent any gases that you don't want which is something that i've recommended several times the other advantage is that if you get over here and you can do just a little bit of exploring uh you can actually get into one of these areas which is always going to be spawning at the very top of the map this is on the base game by the way i'm not sure what they're planning on doing for the dlc but you can get steel here for free too so there's like four of these windows and there's one of these doors and if you deconstruct these these will give you access to steel potentially way before you should be able to afford it so if you were to do something like that that door for whatever reason just turns into like a blob if you were to do that um now i have access to some steel and now i can start building what i need to build in order to capture this so these natural gas generators the reason you need the steel is because it will produce at a tremendously high temperature that your pumps cannot resist unless you have it made out of something that can actually resist that heat so you'll want to make the gas pump out of steel we'll do that and then you'll want to close this off with some kind of insulated tiles uh you could actually do a little bit better do it that way like this whoa let's delete the whole thing so if you want to do something like this and then uh what i would recommend once again use automation on this because if you need to use a pump make sure that you're pumping something that's actually valuable and you're not wasting energy pumping just a few grams of natural gas at a time so i'm going to put this on an atmos sensor i like to also put it on like a buffer gate but you don't have to do it this way if you don't want to the buffer gauge just gonna make it stay on for a little bit longer because so i can get a more like steady flow of it i don't know it could just be my own neuroses could actually not actually make a big difference then once you have that uh what you want to do is not just directly pump this straight into power producers you want to store it because you only want to run your uh you only want to run your generators if there's a need for it and that's what i was doing with the coal the same story is going to be true for the natural gas so what i'll do is the cheapest solution is i'll just kind of carve out a space that looks something like this and we'll destroy any of this random water that falls just so it's out of our way i'll just carve out a space kind of like this and then oh stupid cool steam vents boo then i'll uh just build an area out of uh insulated tile maybe something like this and it doesn't necessarily need to be this big you can also store it in some other containers but those containers need to be made out of steel so they can resist the heat also these things do have an overheat temperature so i usually just store it in a room like that um i will often vacuum this out but if i don't have time to then i'll just filter it as it comes out using some uh of this kind of stuff it's automation uh which you know you can do whatever you need to do on that one but it should only be temporary as you get all the other random gases out of here or until it stabilizes then i'll put a gas pump in here probably made out of steel maybe just put it somewhere nearby and this again i didn't make sure that i'm pumping it out only if it's valuable so atmos sensor once again make sure that i have enough to pump out maybe above like 1500 grams or something like that could go a little bit lower let's do a thousand actually because this is a huge room and uh oh one other thing i forgot automation on this i always set it to about above 1500 the goal here is you want to empty this out as much as you possibly can so this thing can flow otherwise this will get blocked up as it is right now and it won't continue to erupt which means that you're missing out on any free natural gas you could get uh sorry anyway back to our storage room so what i would do is i would run some insulated gas pipe uh from my uh natural gas geyser i'm so bad with names you guys i'm sorry and i would run it down into that room of course i'm just going to be kind of going through stuff right now just because i'm making noise but i just probably drop it off somewhere like this one thing you can do if you happen to have access to plastic because of any draco ranching that you've done or if you happen to find any on a dlc map or if for whatever reason you're already down in the oil biome and producing plastic you could make this out of a high pressure gas vent or you could also potentially come back here and replace this later it may leak some of it out which is why you want to also set up a system to capture natural gas and potentially send it back into this room if you happen to collect it i'll get back to this ventilation stuff here in a bit because i know i'm just kind of glossing over it but i'm realizing it is a little bit more important that i'm making it sound all right so what we would do is we would set up a power cable over there and then this would need to run into natural gas generators so i'd probably drop i don't know two or three you'll also note this is gonna produce uh polluted water so that's something you need to look out for but once i have that set up and if i have a way to deal with the polluted water it's not a lot so you could just have it like run off the sides or something like that and just expect it to collect somewhere and pump it out or dump it somewhere or whatever so i'd have something that comes out like this into each one of these and once again i'm going to stress use a smart battery so i'm going to hook this up to a smart battery and that's so that i can both decide which of these two types of resources i want to use first so i'll put them on their own separate networks and also i can kind of throttle this based on what i actually have so if i have a ton of natural gas maybe i want to use these more and maybe i change these numbers of when these machines turn on and off if i have very little of it i could try to conserve it a little bit more and make the numbers a little bit more aggressive for the coal also these will put out carbon dioxide so i'll just feed it into the same ventilation system that i use to blow out all the excess carbon dioxide and gas and stuff like that and send it out that way so yeah all right so once we got this going uh everything i think should be hooked up we might not have gotten power all the way hooked up so let's get that up sure whatever so there we go we're blowing out some natural gas from the place that we're harvesting it we're entirely captured it's just gonna flow down to this room it'll sit there for a little while and build up and then when it gets to be dense enough we're just going to send it straight in uh it looks like we're sending in the wrong element here which i'll mention filtering now so what i have going on here i mentioned this just a minute ago is a ventilation system to ventilate any gases that i have out of here there are duplicates that could uh produce any like natural gas as a byproduct of one of their negative traits but also if i were to capture this sometimes natural gas can leak out and there can be ways that i'll need to clean it up i don't want it just sitting in my base so what i can do is i can just set up some filtering like i already have right now so whatever gas i suck up from the bottom of my base it's going to go through a whole bunch of filters to go off to places that uh they want to go so for example this filtration setup is for chlorine so if i detect chlorine i'm just going to store it in these tanks because maybe i want to use it for this room or maybe i want to use it to kill germs and store my food in or something like that so there's some uses for chlorine um same thing we're just going to set the same thing up for natural gas so the way you want to set this up and i've talked about this a lot just add a gas pipe element sensor you want to set this to the to the element that you want to effectively filter out so natural gas grab something from the ventilation section called a gas shut off and if you don't have this research you definitely need to get this researched you're going to want to put the intake on the same pipe so there's like a main pipe that has a whole bunch of filtration options that are along it and if i want to filter it it's going to go into this machine it'll be inter intercepted by this gas shut off and it will get go down this new pipe that i specify so like this and then if i capture any natural gas i'm just going to send it back into the same room where i'm storing it so regardless of where this comes from if my dupes are you know farting up some natural gas or if i happen to open something up or if i make a mistake or whatever it'll at least still get consumed by my power network last thing is you need to disconnect these two things together via an automation wire so the setup is that if we detect any gases coming up here that are natural gas which we'll just demonstrate this really fast then it will get intercepted by this gas shut off and sent down the pipe and into our storage tank so let's pretend that we have a whole bunch of natural gas out right now and we'll see what happens when it filters all this stuff so let's say for some reason our pump was was covered in natural gas what should happen is my automation should turn on and be like oh this is an oxygen we need to pump this out and then once the once the timer runs out i basically make it soak in another gas for a little while so i'm not wasting power turning this thing on and off all the time if i happen to detect some natural gas this thing will turn on or if i happen to detect anything other than oxygen that end that is this will eventually turn on and once it does we can pump some different stuff down you'll see you'll kind of get this like mixed soup of gases you'll i have a little bit of natural gas there's chlorine there's carbon dioxide and they're all going to get filtered out by this system so this first checkpoint is for chlorine so if i detect any chlorine which is green it's going to go this way if i detect any natural gas it'll get intercepted by this machine and go down this pipe these other 2 or 4 oxygen and polluted oxygen so if i happen to grab those i'm just gonna dump them right back into my base the rest i'm gonna blow out into space which is gonna be carbon dioxide if you were playing the dlc the rest of this would just go into extra tanks for your carbon dioxide until those were full and then you could blow out the excess if you wanted to so here you go chlorine is getting intercepted natural gas is getting intercepted well we don't have power on it so we made a mistake there we go now the natural gas is getting intercepted so there you go pretty simple filtration system for grabbing different types of gases and especially for natural gas if you have it in your base you might as well use it for power note that the only thing left that's going on into space except for those two packets that we missed because we didn't have it powered yet they're just all carbon dioxide and in the base game i don't have any use for that so i'm just gonna blow it out into space all right so there we go we have natural gas flowing from potentially two sources one any excess that we get and two from our actual geyser so we're pumping it out and this is going to be pumping faster than this can produce but note that it's only pumping when the pressure is high enough so once the pressure reaches high enough i'm going to turn this thing on and let it pump for a little while afterward just so i can assure that i'm getting every little like speck of natural gas out of here possible while also not wasting power doing so so there you go we're all getting filled up let's just pretend that we have enough and then we'll get a good amount of flow down to our our pipes down here or our power generators down here so let's sample this let's put a whole bunch in here real fast let's just fill this up and again you can pre-vacuum this out it does take a little while if you want to ultimately if you have enough pressure and you build it kind of in the middle here you should be fine and you should only pump out the stuff that you want if you needed to filter it you could do the same thing here so we might as well just do that just for the sake of demonstration so let me adjust these pipes just a little bit more uh there's gonna be a little bit of a problem with this by the way and that is that if i detect anything that is uh not natural gas if these pipes are backed up it's not gonna work like i want it to so this is unfortunately one of the times where it's probably better for you to actually use a gas filter which i would normally not recommend because of how much power it uses but if i need to use it for something like this i just use it temporarily until i was sure that i was getting natural gas out of here and then just deconstruct this and send it straight through so for this i do something just a little bit different um i don't like recommending using gas filters it feels really bad this is one of the cases where if you didn't get this vacuumed out in advance this feels appropriate we're gonna set this for unbreathable gas which is natural gas if you're breathing that then you're probably having some pro some trouble this one's pretty straightforward we really shouldn't get that much and you can see that even when i uh fill this up with natural gas almost all this is going to be natural gas anyway it's just a shame that it uses power so yeah if you can avoid this i would recommend it but if you don't have any other choice then yeah use the gas filter all right so let's say that we got all that stuff all resolved cool we're great we're good just hook it straight up and note that we're only using natural gas if we actually need the power and if i want to i could set this to lower numbers which will mean that it will turn on faster than the cool stuff turns on so i could use all my natural gas before i use my coal if i wanted to this is definitely very important power setups it's also going to cause another problem later on that we'll talk about that is that these are going to produce a lot of heat so i saved cooling for last because that's the last problem that you might have to deal with as a new player in the mid game but this is where this is going to start so this also kind of happens one after the other all right pretty much satisfies us for natural gas let's talk about oil um something that you should be doing oh here's another natural gas geyser by the way if it were me i would be going around grabbing as many as i could of these and hooking them up to my network but i think you guys get the idea so another thing you should be doing throughout this is digging down to the bottom of the map as much as you can and the reason why especially on the astero or on the terra asteroids which is typically where the players are going to start because it makes sense it's like the starter asteroid dig down to the bottom as much as you can and you'll eventually get to a point where you start hitting abyssalite before you start seeing a new biome that you probably have never seen before which looks like this this is the oil biome or at least that's what i call i don't know if that's officially what it's called basically this is where a lot of naturally occurring oil is this is also a very hot biome so if you look at look at the temperatures here this is going to boil water which means it's going to boil dupes also you need to have suits set up before you start coming in here and the suits are going to be located in the stations category i'm going to set up a suit line here really quickly i will probably have a separate tutorial for this kind of stuff to go into a little bit more detail so if if i'm rushing a little bit fast through any of these parts just know that i will have other videos that are more specific for this and a lot of cases i already do so you can check those out just don't want to repeat myself too much but i also don't want to make assumptions that everybody knows what this is so what i would do is i would dig somewhere near the bottom something like this and then i want to decide where i'm actually going to enter and kind of just build backwards from there so i know where my suits need to sit you definitely don't want to crack this abyssal light because you can even see this abyss light is very hot but this should insulate you from the remainder of the very hot stuff for quite a while so i just dig down to the point where you start hitting the abyssalite and then start building your uh stations for your suits so maybe dig out a space that looks something like this then i know i'm gonna need to go down and in so maybe something like this this will make sense in just a second maybe build some insulated tiles out to i don't know here sure we also need to put in a water or some kind of liquid lock so i'd have something set up that looks about like this this is just going to help prevent uh gas transfer and to a lesser extent like temperature transfer between the two of these sides oh this is zombie spores okay i'm just gonna pause here that uh this is one huge caution you need to take before you start casually opening up into this if you see one of these things do your best to absolutely leave it alone or if you need to get rid of it like set up your liquid lock immediately and pump out all the gas that this thing could be touching and then go dig this up these zombie spores and i'm glad we saw one of these because i was actually just gonna forget about it if i didn't see it uh these zombie spore germs are something that could literally end your run so be very careful about seeing one of these sporkids for the sake of this and because i've talked about this before i'm just going to dig this up and i'm just going to replace the gas that's in here with something that is not as scary so i'm going to go ahead and just do this apologies for kind of glossing over that a little bit that is very very serious something that you should definitely not be taking lightly but i don't want it to mess up this wrong or this example i suppose so let's go ahead and set up the rest of our liquid lock here i like to use something like salt water if i can get my hands on it only because it'll have a little bit better temperature resistance than other things and we are definitely flooding because we added too much all right once you have your liquid lock in uh this is about when you can start building up your suits so i'm going to start adding stations for this which is an atmosphere checkpoint and a handful of docks these are going to be to store suits which i'm going to need to make from an exosuit forge which is going to look like this this is going to require reed fibers and some kind of refined metal shouldn't be too crazy if you were watching earlier in the video we should have already set up something like this to start farming drecos so that we could get those reed fibers and also get better food also this could potentially not be your first time setting up suits because you'll want to set up suits before you set up something like this anyway so yeah all right so we'd have some kind of entrance definitely do need to send oxygen into these guys which you can just grab off of one of your lines if you are producing it from uh electrolyzers right now so i'm gonna skip that part only because that's kind of intuitive but this is basically what getting into the oil biome is gonna look like once i have this kind of safe entry point i'm just going to start digging down and start putting ladders down until i start hitting some of this oil and be careful about digging into these too aggressively because this oil is often very over pressurized so if i were to open this up note that it's only taking up that much space but let's watch how much this is gonna flood because of how over pressurized this is uh should be going up here pretty quickly and uh yeah you can see it rising it's depressurizing from over here there's definitely more oil in these pockets than it looks like uh so you can see how fast it's getting set up here if your duplicates are in suits though they don't really care they can navigate their way through this if you're trying to do this without suits you'd probably wind up with a lot of hurt or dead duplicants um man how much is in here this is crazy this is also a good example of be careful about opening these up to casually because this is what can happen uh you could definitely flood this with more than you really mean to so if this starts happening you can also dig a little bit of extra space down here so that it fills up at the bottom rather than at the top and what i would do especially is if you need more oil for this pool i would just continue to fill up this pool of oil before digging into anything else because if i were to connect these two right now this would probably overflow and backflow into this area uh yeah lots of oil in there this is a this is a good demonstration basically what i would do from here is i would grab a probably gold or a steel pump to put down here this is going to be how i'm pumping oil out and using it there's a couple of different ways you can do this but since this is going to be likely the first time you've done this before i'm going to recommend this in a way that is going to be less efficient but it will also be easier to use and that is by taking your oil using insulated pipes by the way since that's going to be very hot i'm going to add something here in a bit but we'll come back to that and sending it up to somewhere where you want it to be processed into petroleum i typically will like to put everything in one room here and you'll see this a lot in the next section as to why i like to do this um so i'm going to send it somewhere up here but the the general idea oh whoops i don't want to do it to that one i like to do it this one the general idea is because when i need cooling for all the buildings that are producing a lot of heat i just want to put it all in one place because it's a lot easier to cool one place than it is to cool like 10. i'm just making up numbers but you know what i mean what's this wire for i don't know why this needs to be here so there i would start making a room that's kind of tiled off like this with insulated tile because this is where all of my heat producers are going to go and i'm eventually going to cool it just maybe not right away so let's say we set up something like this go ahead and close the rest of this off you can put your machines for refining oil somewhere in here it doesn't need to be super scientific so i like to put them kind of near the entrance if i only have one entrance and exit for this whole like hot room uh if you don't want to do that you can put it wherever else it's also good to put them in here because uh it's easier to just run heavy watt wire to them rather than needing to transform it so you can run it out to other places let's drop an oil refinery let's hook it up to heavy watt wire this is going to be where you send your raw like your crude oil to so this black oil is just called crude oil we need to convert it to petroleum before we can actually use it for power though so what i would do is i would have a pipe that's set up here and going into something near this uh near this refinery so let's actually redo this let me build this refinery next to a couple of liquid reservoirs and these liquid reservoirs i'm going to make out of like gold or steel or something like that that's what i'm going to use to store my oil and you can also put it kind of further back in here there's a bunch of different storage methods you don't have to do it exactly this way but this is in a way that i found to be uh pretty easy to work with so let's grab a oil refinery and put it in the middle of these two and what i'm going to do is i'm going to run some oil up into this one the crude oil that is up into this one go all the way down to the oil biome whoa too far and do something like this so that when i pump oil out it's going to sit in this tank it's going to go from this tank into my refinery what's going to come out is petroleum it's going to go into here and then this is going to come out finally into my generators there's a couple of things to make this a little bit more efficient we'll get to that in just a second so my generators are just going to be these petroleum generators these are also going to get really hot they're going to produce a lot of heat so i want to produce them either out of gold or steel if i can afford it the steel probably not by now but maybe gold so you don't need more than maybe a couple of these things and i always treat these as like my emergency power i'm going to put them on their own smart battery setup and i'm going to have them separated that way and i'm going to turn their values down really low so that i can rely on my coal and my natural gas if i need to uh if i then if i'm out of power like i can set this to maybe zero and like 50 this is basically going to turn on only in the event of emergencies and uh this is going to basically minimize the amount of heat that we're producing uh and it'll minimize the amount of cooling that we need to do so this is generally how i like to do it there's a bunch of different ways to set this up but again we're just going with one of the easiest ways to do it so we know this tank is going to have petroleum you just run it down here straight into the tanks then these are only going to turn on obviously if they have petroleum to burn but also only if they have uh the need for it because of the smart battery speaking of automation this is another place in which we can get a little bit fancier so what's going to be happening is when i hook this up to power which let's go ahead and do that now this is going to be uh what ignore that this is going to be something that it will start contributing to a lot of the heat in my base this is going to be a little bit of an advanced thing to do here but something that can matter for later on i'm going to put a liquid shut off here and this is going to make it not actually pump up there unless i need more oil in those tanks so i do something like this hook it up to power then the oil that gets pumped from here will stop at that liquid shut off until i actually need it and what's going to tell me that i need it is going to be those tanks that i built next to the oil refinery this is largely just to prove to prevent a lot of heat transfer because if i have oil just constantly sitting in these pipes it's just going to consistently generate heat that i don't want to have to cool back down so i'd recommend setting up something like this we're going to have an automation wire that runs from the shut off all the way up to this tank and for this tank i'm only going to ask for oil if it's not somewhere between 30 and 10 percent capacity something really low like this so that i have enough to refine but also i will only request a little bit when i need it same thing can go for the refinery if i don't want to store a bunch of hot petroleum i could just hook this tank straight up to the refinery and set this also to similar numbers so there we go what's going to happen is when i actually need it we'll be getting a positive signal from this automation wire and that's going to allow flow to happen once the tank fills up just a little bit you can even set this a little bit lower because there will be more coming in because of the length of the pipe than we actually set here so let's just watch this happen really fast we go into super speed because there's a long way to pump this so here we go we'll just continue to fill this until we see the shut off turned off so there we go it's flowing into the machine which a duplicant should come over here in just a bit by the way to start refining it a duplicate when they're called they will come over here and they'll use the fancy steering wheel to do something like this it's going to put out petroleum petroleum is gonna go into this tank and it's gonna go straight into my generators if i actually need it so i have this set to 50 and zero percent so this only turns on if i absolutely need it it may turn on at first because there might not be charge in this battery right away by the way this does produce more polluted water so you will need some way to get this out of here but this can also work the other thing is this is going to produce a lot of carbon dioxide also which is why this ventilation system happens i will often put a second ventilation system in this hot room to deal with any of the byproducts from the petroleum generator the coal generator and also note this is making natural gas so this is another reason why the filtration on the natural gas matters because this is yet another source that's going to be producing it all right so this tank is going to continue to fill up and as long as this tank is not filled up with petroleum it's going to keep putting out jobs to be done on this refinery so as long as this tank is not up to where we set it to be which is about 30 percent those duplicants are going to be constantly working here and turning oil into petroleum note that we're storing a lower amount of oil and petroleum here because that's going to impart less heat on the surrounding area by the way our tank is pretty much full so we should be stopping the flow here in just a second and by full i mean up to where we are asking it to stop so it's asking to stop at about 20 percent these things can hold five tons we should have just crossed that threshold meaning that this is now sending a red signal down to here and once this pipe empties with oil we're not going to be sending any more until we actually need more meaning that we have produced more power uh we've done any of that stuff or we've we basically burned petroleum because that's the only thing that's going to be using it there you go now we have three or four power sources your fourth power source could be uh manual generators if you still really need it but by this point i want to be off of that so that my 10 duplicates or whatever it's going to be hopefully not too many won't have to sit down here and generate power for me and this as far as power generation if this is all i need to do every once in a while that's way more efficient than a duplicate running down here and generating power manually so another thing you could do to just charge this battery up if you really wanted to you don't have to do this uh is set this to actually run and fill this up all the way so that your readings will be accurate after that this is very minor by the way so now that i know for sure once all my batteries are filled up that the order of which i'm going to be using power is set right now i have it set to use uh natural gas first coal is uh definitely second in priority and the petroleum is definitely last so i have this all set up and this is going to be strong enough to push me into the later portions of the game where i have major power consumers that's pretty much it uh there's other sources on the map that i'm not going to talk about right now which is basically like steam vents you could harvest some heat from this magma down here if you wanted to get some more power you could harvest heat from volcanoes if you wanted to get more power hydrogen vents are out there as well and they're amazing i'm not going to cover all of those i do have a separate video that talks about all those setups as well so if you want to check that out then that's definitely something that could be worthwhile for you but if not this will do it you could pretty much finish the game on something like this if you continue to expand your infrastructure on these types so yeah that's it uh at least for power for right now this video is getting really long by the way which uh i guess is pretty appropriate considering this is a pretty major problem but yeah that's what i have for power let's talk about the last part that uh my other base was not doing very well and something that you're going to need to solve by this point anyway because we just talked a lot about this is going to generate heat this is going to generate a lot of heat this is really hot we need cooling now so let's go back to the other base and see how i messed up cooling then we'll be right back here to talk about how to do it the right way ah okay we're back on the disaster base for one last time to stop looking at this thing it's making me sad but all right so we're back here to examine the fourth thing that i think kills player the most new players the most in the mid game and that is cooling or overheating uh this is a big deal that i think trips up a lot of people i purposefully save this for last because a lot of the other solutions to the other problems are going to require cooling afterward so let's see what i was doing here which is fair warning it's going to be a mess a lot of it's going to be kind of outdated too because the mechanics don't work the same way as they did back when this was filmed or rather created uh filmed lol uh anyway so yeah let's check out and see what i did wrong and what i should have been doing by this point and then we'll we'll show how to do it in a bunch of different ways to do it properly so what are the things that i need to cool so one of the main things that i need to cool is oxygen it's very common to be producing oxygen from very hot water if you can get away with that with not needing to cool it then that's a awesome but you know nine times out of ten you're gonna need to cool it with something in this run i was cooling it with wheeze warts which was working but the problem with this is that they changed the wease warts design to now need phosphorite you'll notice that they're inside these flower pots right now because you used to be able to do this this way you can't do this now without phosphorite so i would need to be ranching drecos or something like that to keep this up and i don't want to have to run in and out of these rooms which by the way these setups are awful uh just separated by one airlock that's going to be terrible for for heating or cooling you can see how much is leaking but yeah anyway moving on uh the wheeze warts are not very practical in this setup i will show a more practical setup but i would say they're only really useful for cooling oxygen and not much else you're gonna need more heavy duty cooling for other stuff this is gonna be the same oh someone's dying just like they did in the beginning hey this is the this is the shot from my uh top 10 video that's so funny on the same file and everything in the same place so there you go anyway whatever let's take a look at some other cooling and again i'm using wise warts here i'm using weave warts to try to condense this steam which lol such a bad option um i don't have any liquid cooling or anything like that so that's definitely a problem um it's just more so what i don't have and honestly this is one of the last concepts i think that new players pick up in terms of how to deal with as the game goes on oh another person is incapacitated this is a disaster all right let's let's uh spare them the horrible death oh i don't have the sandbox on whatever they might die uh yeah so i'm not using a lot of the cooling options that i could um i could be in here using some of this ice for cooling which we'll talk about but the biggest thing that i don't have and i just did not have a fundamental understanding of was cooling using aqua tuners or something like that which is going to involve steam steam turbines and all that fun stuff so this is a glaringly awful example of how to cool your base uh i would not recommend anything that i'm doing in this space as far as how to keep stuff cool so let's talk about the real ways you'd want to do it uh in this uh other good base that we've started up as kind of a simulation and once we have that uh that'll basically complete our mid game we'll be to a point where we have a base that i think is more stable that you could finish the rest of the game with but uh let's get over there now and figure out how to do the right cooling okay thankfully we're back on the better base the one that does not make me sad when i look at it like the failed one like before uh yeah let's look at what we could have done on that other one or more specifically what we should have done and some tips and stuff that you could hopefully fold into your own play throughs so this is kind of similar to a lot of stuff we've talked about already there's a way that you could do things that is not nearly as wasteful or as expensive so i think there's not a lot of really obvious tips about that kind of stuff but i would just say when it comes to cooling uh try to stay focused on things that are going to be a less heat producing solution i'm just going to say that vaguely because there's nothing immediately obvious at this stage of the game other than like building things out of insulated tile if it's going to be holding um like hot liquids or hot gases or something this little trick we did down here was to help heat transfer like we don't have um turn my cheater tools on here we don't have all of the uh heat being transferred because we're not constantly piping up hot oil there's a lot of small things that you could do to try to prevent a lot of heat transfer so there's nothing super obvious about that i'd say just keep your eye on it as time goes on as for actual solutions the bristle blossoms are an interesting part of this and the reason that i say this is because we covered earlier in the video how you might be able to manufacture some colder water by grabbing some blocks of ice and dropping them into hot water and therefore making colder water if you are eventually using water that's really cold and just barely above the temperature that this can handle this will also act as a coolant for this area any time that you have any sort of liquid sitting in anything like in a pipe or something like that it will eventually exchange its heat with its surroundings so if you're sending in like you know 45 degree water this will also keep the center of your base in the area where you're growing food very cold as well so that's kind of the first step here and why manufacture sorry why getting onto bristle blossoms for a little while is like an intermediate step can have more than just the benefit of food for a little while um so yeah the other thing i'm going to mention is that you want to make sure to not produce any buildings that are going to overheat your base until you're ready for it so for example i mentioned these aqua tuners here a little bit earlier the aqua tuners are effectively going to cool liquid that is sent in and out of them but they will spread their heat around to stuff that's outside and you can see how much heat something is going to generate when you're clicking on the building this one for example approximates it but it's 585 kdtus which is insane if i were to put this out into the straight air it would overheat my base in no time um same thing goes for a bunch of other things that you probably don't want to mess around with too much you guys can look through all the heat values for yourself but know that there are some ones that are pretty common for uh earlier in the game you can see this one's about 1k dtu by comparison so the actual number uh it doesn't really mean that much to me but the scale does so if something produces like 585 times the heat of another building i'm gonna go ahead and say that i better have a good answer for cooling before i use that uh another example of something that might you might not want to do yet is this uh polymer press you can see this is 32 times what this transformer puts out so yeah make sure you're not actually producing a lot of buildings that make a ton of heat in your base until you're ready for it what you will want to do is you want to have some kind some type of coolant whether that's a gas or a liquid uh that you can freely cycle around your base to places that need it um we did talk about this a little bit in the sense that you would have a coolant for your oxygen and i suggested polluted water and i'm going to continue to suggest that but i'll i'll get to this probably last this is like the ultimate cooling setup once you can create consistently cold uh polluted water or even salt water or ethanol or something like that then you're going to be in really great shape so we'll talk about that last i'm going to talk about some potential intermediate steps that might help get you there in case you're not quite ready to build all that yet so what you can do is just like this we have ice being sent here every once in a while which by the way we need to mine out a little bit more so we have more stuff for them to bring so let's just do i don't know something like this sure why not whatever so now we got a bunch of ice and this old this will generate some cold water here which again we did have mentioned it has its effects this is only one type this is just regular ice i guess you could also bring snow here if you really wanted to as well because if that melts it'll just make regular water but there also is polluted ice in here too and some biomes have quite a bit and you could use this to generate some cool polluted water in the meantime also so if you want to just make a small tank like this uh maybe not that if small want to just make a small tank like this you could do the exact same thing where you find something on the map you pour some cold or rather some polluted water in there if you can find a source for it uh maybe it comes out of your bathrooms or something like that or maybe pump out some of this you can also continue to explore and you probably should because some of these uh elements that you could find by the way there's one right here some of these elements you could find could actually put out put out a cold polluted water for you automatically there's a cool slush geyser that will do that for you let's see what this is and see if we can use it all right this is a polluted water vent so you could just harvest it from something like this so let's go ahead and dig this out really quick and there you go it just produces some polluted water there's a lot of different places you could get this from but i effectively just want to have a stash of it uh so that i can produce some kind of coolant so let's go ahead and grab this i have covered the way to set this up a couple of times but the general idea is you will want to hook your pump up to automation to make sure that you're pumping out a good amount of water and not just wasting power pumping a tiny amount let's go ahead and run some pipe up here and i'm going to be super quick and sloppy about this this will obviously take a little bit more care and setup in your own runs but i'm just doing this fast for the sake of time so let's say we run it all the way over here and we eventually drop it off somewhere nearby oh we need a ladder so my duplicates can get up and down and with this one if i want as much cold polluted water as possible you could just go crazy and put a whole bunch of ones in here and i'll just copy the settings here but i need to make sure to change it to just polluted ice like that there we go then i could continue to mine out this biome for quite a while use the polluted ice in order to cool stuff i'm gonna say this is not the only method to do something like this but we will just let this run just to give you an idea of what it looks like another thing you could do which i'll do in just a second is you could run stuff through your ice biome as well or you could build stuff in your ice biome that produces a lot of heat because that will have the side effect of dealing with the heat but also uh eventually it will melt everything inside here and give you a whole bunch of water that you could use you could do something like that also i'm not the biggest fan of that i'm not honestly sure that i have great reasons why i just haven't done it a ton um some weaknesses i can see if you were to cycle water in and out of there let's say you were to cycle it through like some radiant pipes or something like that if this was ever too cold or this system got backed up you'd start getting a lot of state changes in these pipes meaning that they would freeze and damage the pipes or break the pipes entirely so i haven't been the greatest fan of that um if you wanted to cycle something like ethanol through there that would work a lot better because ethanol has a lot lower freezing point and it will never freeze when it's that low because ethanol's freezing point in fahrenheit's like negative 173 or something like that it's really low uh this way i've found to be very simple um and actually quite elegant over time if you can just circulate that i'll show you how to build some one of those loops in uh in the meantime but i'm just gonna go ahead and spawn some water here so we can get the system up and running i need my sandbox tools on as i'm like poking around all right here we go there so now that we have enough i'm gonna go ahead and pump it out we're gonna send if it's above i don't know 150 sure why not and then if we pour some of this water it could be really hot polluted water it could be colder it could be whatever once you send it in here you're gonna have something like this it'll eventually produce enough polluted water for you and then if you need to cool something one thing that you're gonna wanna cool pretty soon is this room because this room is going to start getting really hot what i would do is i would start off by building some snaking pipes through here so maybe even along the uh the tiles because it'll impart a little bit more energy into it so if i wanted to do something like that i could run some radiant tiles or some radiant pipes down here like this maybe i want to build rebuild my petroleum stuff to not be inside the tiles like i was before so you might just deconstruct this or something like that we're gonna go ahead and mop up all this stuff too there we go and then if you want to just kind of snake it through here definitely something you can do and uh with any one of these cooling setups by the way i want to show you just a quick trick that you can do let me run it through this whole thing really fast as i clean up my pipes and there's going to be a bunch more buildings in here that are going to produce a lot of heat so i'd probably just do something like this eventually when i got to the end what i would do is put this on another liquid shut off kind of similarly to how we did with the oil line down below right here so that i'm only returning the water whenever this room gets too hot so ideally what i would want to do with all of these setups is if i have a coolant that's coming in for example the cold polluted water that we're about to produce i'd want it to sit in these pipes for as long as it as it can until i need to flush it i could flush it like once a cycle i could flush it when the air got too hot i could flush it for a lot of different reasons and i'll kind of just leave that up to your discretion i've done it in a whole bunch of schemes and honestly they're all pretty good uh as long as you have water that's cold enough so i'd say just pick whichever one you feel like but the idea of keeping it in the pipes like this is that you're not spending power constantly circulating it all the time you're only spending the power when you need to replace it so that's kind of the idea behind that let's set the rest of this up once we get enough in here and i'm gonna probably fudge this a little bit and add some cold polluted water once we can actually see the effects we're getting a lot of ice here by the way so should be producing some but still we don't want to sit here and wait for ice to melt before we actually have anything usable so let's send it down this maybe down like that and then we need it to eventually meet down here and i'm going to send it up through this pipe as we connect here you could also potentially put a shut off somewhere else as well maybe at the beginning of this line if you really wanted to i haven't typically done that i've actually somewhat enjoyed all the random cooling that i get from sitting in pipes like this it won't be tremendous but it eventually will make a little bit of a difference throughout your base so i don't know i've always been okay with that this is the pipe that i'm using to send it back to the same place um i could actually send it back let me actually delete most of this i could send it back in the same pipes that uh are out already sending me water so if i wanted to do that i could just set up something like this and uh send it in there the same way so probably want to pipe it like this yes so that i can assure that i'm returning the water rather than getting new water i realize this all sounds very funny but it's definitely a thing and then i would probably delete this here whoops we are messing up whoops we are messing up all i want to do here is make sure that we're returning water from the coolant rather than getting more coolant and i probably eventually disconnect it from this line originally anyway so maybe this is just me over designing something but yeah that's that's eventually what i would do have something like this uh and it would eventually go back into the same pool so let me super speed this really fast just to give an idea of what it'll be like uh there's water coming up this pipe as we saw before it'll drop out it'll eventually mix with all this uh polluted ice and it will turn into very cold polluted water and then when i need it to go to a place that i need to cool it'll just sit in those pipes it'll cool the tiles it'll cool everything around it and it'll be good to go let's just cheat a little bit and kind of spawn some some water in here let's say we've got this water down to like 40 degrees fahrenheit which is a good temperature say you have a pool like this this is how oh i need to increase the volume lol let's say you had a pool like this uh this is how you would at least generate and for temporarily maintain this pool of water that we talked about earlier that you could use to keep whatever you wanted cool for this pool you could always cycle water in and out of this central place or you could also just ship some polluted ice down into here or you could continually run the polluted ice into here from like this biome if you wanted to do something like that so this is a really cheap like basic way to do something like this if you've never done this before but the effects that you get is uh there's gonna be water coming down here and they're just gonna sit in these pipes for a little while let's hook this up to something that will eventually flush it and like i said i've done this before where i just basically flush it like once a day so let's just put on like a timer sensor it's a little bit easier to understand than a cycle sensor and let's just say we change it to the mode of cycles i want it to sit in these pipes meaning that i don't want flow on this for about a full cycle and then we'll turn it on for i don't know 0.15 cycles or something like that uh no maybe more than that maybe like point three yeah yeah that's probably good enough i just want enough so it'll actually flush all the rest of these pipes but we're gonna watch the temperature in here really change in here it's already pretty warm this is definitely warmer than i'd be able to grow food with or something like that so the coolant is just going to be chilling in this in these pipes for a little while and if we hover over what's actually in here there's already pretty warm polluted water only because it's already done its job of exchanging some heat so if i wanted to flush this manually i could also do that you could set up like a switch to do it for you if you wanted to quickly switch it out and we might just have to super speed this just to make sure that we're getting the effects that we want but we should see the temperature start to change it's already getting a lot colder right here because this is initially where it's coming in let's just super speed it and kind of watch the change happen over time yeah there we go starting to get really blue this is turning green definitely getting colder this is all turning yellow so we're getting great effects here and i'm going to turn the manual switch back off so that we only cycle it every once in a while just to conserve some power so that when this is not cycling we're not spending power pumping this anymore once the whole pipe is full this also means that we could distribute it to more places with just this one pump if we're not having it constantly flow but this is the idea that i i'd want you to get used to is pipe some kind of cold liquid through something and find a way to maintain that cold liquid uh let's talk about a more long-term way to do that and then i'll talk about some other options if this is a little bit too intimidating for you that may be a little bit easier or at least they were at least solutions that i found out about first before i started using this final solution the final solution is the most bulletproof though so that's why i would encourage you to use that all right here's the final solution for cooling and you will need some pretty advanced materials for this you're going to need steel and you're going to need plastics you'll want to make sure you have that stuff running that can also be a good reason why you want to use this one in the intermediary so that you have a way to still use the coolant before you can recycle it if that makes sense so let's go ahead and build this out i don't know if i have enough space here this is probably not a good idea uh yep it's okay i don't think i would normally build it this close but no this is this is probably not enough space this is dumb what am i doing all right let's find an open space somewhere let's just kind of dig out like right here and call this good stick out a space maybe something like this i don't know this might be a little bit too big but that's okay what you'll want to do as a part of this is you'll want to have a tank for your cold polluted liquid or sorry for your cold liquid whatever it is it doesn't have to be polluted by the way the reason that i use polluted liquid or you could use salt water or ethanol or something like that basically the reason that i don't use regular water is because the regular water will freeze a lot more easily and it will boil a lot more easily and i want something that can kind of stand up to the abuse of cooling a little bit more so yeah this bottom tank is just going to be filled with water so i'm just going to go ahead and seal this off ideally you'd vacuum this out or you could create some like tiles to let air escape as you filled it up with water but this is going to be filled with cold polluted water and it's not going to be cold when you first start dumping it in it might be hot or it might be warm or something like that so let's let me actually start off with something that's a little bit warmer like 96 [Music] this would be the temperature as if you were like taking it out of your bathrooms or something like that maybe a little bit warmer than that but let's say you start with a pool of water like this what you want to use is something that i've teased at just a little bit and that is these uh thermo aqua tuners uh in this room this is going to need to be totally empty before you start doing this so let's simulate some of that we build a gas pump here you can build it out of steam if you want to or steam out of steel you could build a pump out of steam you'd be like some kind of deity you want to vacuum this out and you'll want to have this on automation you will also want to totally seal some of this stuff up if you can you don't want to have to go back in here and perform any kind of maintenance so if you can see all these room ups rooms up that's what i would do for this pump you will want to put it on automation so you can eventually turn it off because what's going to be in here in the long term is an aqua tuner and also steam what we saw earlier is that the aqua tuner puts out a lot of heat and basically what the aqua tuner does is it will take the uh heat that is effectively removed from the liquid that you pass through it and it'll just put it out into the air if you put that out into the air and if it's uh steam then you can cool the steam so let's set some of that up uh you'd want to probably not have this running until this whole room was vacuumed out until you end until you filled it with some water so we'll do that here in just a little bit also oh by the way this is the part where you need steel you want to build these aqua tuners out of steel building them out of something else will cause them to break once it gets too hot so let's build these out of steel maybe something like this i don't know sure why not and then what you want to do actually let's build them both right next to each other or at least pretty close maybe something like this sure so i'd build maybe a couple of aqua tuners usually don't need a lot um i've had runs where i had to build four but that was because it was on an extremely hot map to begin with on the typical ones i think you'd be okay with just two be wary that these things do take a lot of power by the way and we'll get that set up also but let's just pretend that we got this all vacuumed out i'm gonna turn this off let me go ahead and fill this with vacuum so there's nothing in there so eventually this pump will do its job and make this all vacuum there will be absolutely nothing inside then what you want to do is you want to hook this up to some kind of water source ideally clean water but you can really pour any kind of water in here that you want so i would probably want to put it at the side that the aquatuners is on that doesn't really matter but that's just kind of what i prefer and just because we don't have a pool of water i'll just use this you wouldn't normally want to do this so just pretend that this is hooking up into a uh a more normal source like let's say you're managing your water at some central location just hook it into one of those or into some kind of germy source or something like that that you don't really care too much about so what you'd want to do is you'd want to hook this up like so put some automation on this vent so that you can stop the flow whenever you have enough water there we go we're just gonna pump it out of a random pool that we have and send it into this uh area right here you can put in a good amount of water there's no real scientific reason to go with an exact amount here just whenever you feel like it's good enough um i don't know i'll oftentimes put in like maybe a few hundred kilograms per tile and call that good and we're gonna super speed a lot of this so we can see this whole build in action all right let me just slow this down we'll let this run for a little while whoops let this run for a little while and we'll get it filled up um yeah now we've solved part of this part of this is that we have these aqua tuners in here we don't have the rest of it all hooked up but we know that a lot of heat is going to be generated from these aqua tuners and it's eventually going to boil this water now we need a way to cool that back down so what you want to grab are these uh steam turbines i'd probably match it one to one with the number of aqua tuners you have just to be safe so i'm going to go ahead and drop two of them also note these do require plastic so this is again why this is not the most accessible solution earlier in the game and then i'd probably tile it off maybe something like this um if you want you can vacuum out this room i don't really care that much uh what i eventually want to have in here is a lot of hydrogen which can be a byproduct of uh producing oxygen uh it's also it's so accessible that you might as well put some in here but the reason that i want hydrogen is because it's going to be able to conduct heat pretty well um this is also not super essential you could just use a small layer of liquid on here like a small layer of like water or oil or something like that and then use that to cool stuff i'll show you the rest of the cooling setup here that's not like the whole setup but i'm just talking about the medium to conduct heat is not that big of a deal if you over pressurize this too you could even over pressurize this with something as bad as like carbon dioxide and it would still be fine so i only use hydrogen because it is accessible you don't need a tremendous amount of it most of the time and it is a good heat conductor all right we've man this is fine let's go ahead and turn this off and not send any more water in here what you want to do from these guys is once they suck up uh some steam they will put it out as water and since i don't want to continually pump water back in here i'm going to have it dump out into a different or right back into the same pool so i'll just create a second outlet right that like that so that when there's steam in here it'll get sucked up by the turbines it'll get turned into water and then dump right back out so you've effectively got a loop here that's going to be dealing with a bunch of heat and now the last step is to kind of hook all this stuff up we'll deal with cooling these off in just a second but let's hook up how we're going to actually maintain the temperature of this water can already see it's pretty hot but let's see what happens when we make it colder so what i would do is i would have a place where i know water is going to be incoming maybe on this side and then before it got too far along i would put a bunch of pumps in the way that would connect to different aqua tuners since we only have two i'll just destroy these last two just for the sake of it i would want to put this on a thermo sensor to detect if the water is hot enough for me to actually want to cool it and then i would drop some vents something like this probably destroy some of this water just because i don't want to over fill this otherwise uh this will not flow like i expect it to and then what i would do is i would run a pipe from here up into the aqua tuner and then back out back into the same place let me see if we can this piping is going to look pretty bad by the way this can be a little bit of a rat's nest to manage but let's do something like this sure then we're gonna need to hook this all up to oh i'm at a food shortage lol uh how about we just spawn you guys some food just to hold you over for a little while berry sludge and we're also clearly not producing enough because i never went back and actually created critters for them to ranch sure whatever all right so now we just need to hook up some power so you can put this inside the same room if you want to you don't have to uh it doesn't really matter that much so let's go ahead and drop some transformers here because we want to actually run this in with transformers and not with like heavy watt wire or something like that and these are so expensive that they're gonna need to be on pretty much their own transformer anyway so i'd probably just set it up something like this obviously just being a little bit messy but you know that's okay you need to also transform this down from one of these heavy watt wires so this can require to run quite a bit of cabling around uh so let's just do that really quickly whoops deleted a ladder and maybe a pipe oh man what did i do yup and an automation cable oh i should not have done that all right whatever okay so let's run some heavy watt wire let's make some bridges so that we can actually run it to where we need it to go this is also going to be important to hook up to your steam turbines because these steam turbines in in addition to cooling will actually produce power for you they are very strong so this is why this is kind of like the the ultimate solution for cooling in the long run uh sure let's just run it down here i guess this is just going to be really messy normally not be this messing you'd put a little bit more thought into how do how to do all this stuff but since we're going fast and just trying to do it uh we're just gonna do it this way all right so we've run it in like that you'd want this to eventually connect to the heavy watt wire so you will need to keep one space open for one of these uh heavyweight joint plates run it in like this connect it to the steam turbines and then let's finish this bridge and there we go uh this is going to detect if our water is too hot so if this is anywhere above let's say like 45 or maybe 40 degrees fahrenheit or something like that which you can see in celsius if you wanted to do the translation i'll switch i know i will eventually so let's say if this is anywhere above 40 degrees fahrenheit we want it to go to the aqua tuner and we want the opportunity to spit it back out into our pool of water so we can see the water is going in at about 93 or 34 celsius and it's coming out at a fixed temperature of lower than what we passed in so we've already cooled a whole bunch already any heat that this generates you can see how much it generates if you click on it this is an approximate value but it's going to generate a lot and it's going to keep this water up really fast just looking at the water it's that bottom square you can see how fast it's heating this water up and it will eventually turn this all into steam and as long as this water uh is too warm we're just gonna be keep going on this loop for quite a while until we have the water that we want when you have the water you want you can put it down at this end of the tank the idea is that any hot water is going to be dumped here it'll get cooled before it's allowed to pass all the way down and it'll get pumped out to the things that we need to cool uh which we'll set up here in just a second so just already we started this water out at about 98 96 something like that the water that's coming in is already cooling down quite a bit it's already dropped by nearly 10 degrees fahrenheit so these aqua tuners are really strong uh and especially when combined with these steam turbines uh they're great they just take a tremendous amount of power so make sure you have enough power to push this first let's talk about this this is going to be water that will eventually be cooled but let's just hook it up for right now the last thing that we're missing here is that these steam turbines they will also generate heat from doing this process and they will generate an equivalent amount of heat from whatever they kind of suck up muted quite a bit um the idea is that the hotter steam that you're sucking up with these the more heat they're gonna produce and you need a way to actually keep these things cool so they don't like overheat uh and shut down so i would do the same thing that i did with something like this snake some pipes through let it sit in the pipes let the cold water just kind of chill and and cool this place by the way here's the temperature of this now looking pretty good uh not amazing but it's looking pretty good it'll eventually cool down to the point that it's like colder than the rest of your base more than likely still doing pretty good you can also flush it more regularly if you feel like you need to so let's just do something like this maybe we'll flush it roughly half the time and let it sit roughly half the time you can kind of play around with that that's gonna be the same idea here though so i want to set up some pipes that are going to store some coolant for me so let's say it comes in here i'm gonna kind of snake it through like this and then i'm going to put a liquid shut off at the end and this liquid shut off is going to be what dumps it back into the pool when it's when it's too hot so i'm going to connect it down like that and dump it back into the pool i'm going to send it in like this so when this shut off is needing to flush the water in here or if it needs more water it'll get pumped up through this pipe it'll just kind of sit in the air right here and then whenever the air gets too hot i'm going to use a thermo sensor for this i'm going to flush the pipes and i'm also going to put this on a buffer gate just so i can assure that the whole room gets flushed every time that there's a problem with how hot it is in there so let's say if this room ever gets above like i don't know 100 degrees fahrenheit or something like that or maybe even 80 just so it's kind of similar to what the rest of my base will be then we'll flush it out and i'll make sure to flush it for about 30 seconds there so now this should be pumping out water it's going to pump out hot water for the time being and that's that's going to be okay eventually this will cool down i'm just going to run this on super speed for a little while so we can kind of see the effects also note that this pool of water is kind of not renewable once the ice melts which we just saw by the way um you're eventually going to run out of ice which means you're eventually going to want to switch off of this and on to something like this so what you can do when everything gets uh like when this runs out or when this is at least up and stable you can start replacing any existing things you had cooling with this flow of liquid you could even have it flow up into here as well and just pump it out if it ever gets too hot using a new pump or you could just snake pipe through here also and use the exact same method that we were using uh for this so there's a lot of different cooling methods that you can use but this is like the final boss of cooling for a good reason you can see the water in here is getting very hot i think when it came in here we should know is that 80 degrees fahrenheit it's already at 157 so this will eventually turn into steam and the cooling that we're getting you can kind of already see the effects sitting over here at about 98 and in here about 80 and this is just going to continually cycle because our water is not cool enough so i probably wouldn't hook this up immediately this way but i think you'll get the idea let's just pretend like we've already generated all the steam here so i'm just gonna fill this up with steam so that you can see the uh the steam turbines running let's fill this up with like uh 50 kilograms per tile at like 300. so there we go once you have steam in there this will eventually boil off all that water the steam turbines are gonna suck it up through these little uh inlets at the bottom of them and i have a igneous or rock like insulated tile in between them just to make sure that the heat inside here doesn't transfer outside as much and also doesn't transfer into this room so here's the steam turbines running if we hover over it we can see what kind of heat it's producing this is pretty significant but it's not as significant as the cooling that we're getting from doing something like this ultimately this water will get down to very frigid temperatures and this will stay stable and this will stay hot so that's where they'll all eventually wind up can't see the steam turbine dumping water out of here as it does uh condense it back down this is only cycling because this pool of water is not cold enough so let's go ahead and just pretend like we got what we needed out of it let's set this whole thing to like 40 degrees fahrenheit so there we go let's just pretend that our uh let's pretend that our aqua tuners did their job they eventually will uh fill this up to or rather get this cooled down to a degree that we need and then we will be good we will be able to cycle cold water in here so in this case we are now satisfying the temperature requirements you can see the temperature of the hydrogen right now is down in like the 50s degrees fahrenheit and then when this buffer gate runs out the coolant is just going to sit there and it will wait absorb a bunch of heat inside this polluted water so once these steam turbines are running you could literally just sit here and hover over it to see what the temperature was but it will rise and it'll eventually be cooled by the polluted water that we're already creating so this is effectively the loop um let's go ahead and uh i'm trying to think if i have anything else that i've missed about this but i don't think so this is pretty much it as time goes on or before you were sealing this off you could actually add a bunch more pumps with uh some pipes coming out like this and then you could send this out to other places you might need to cool like if you wanted to eventually replace this you could put it on its own pump if you wanted to run some pipe into this area to cool off your oxygen that could put it beyond its own pump there's a bunch of different places you could use this uh you could also use this to tame some cool steam vents this so if you wanted to sit cool it inside here to condense the steam down and then flush it back out once uh the coolant in there was getting too hot you could use that as well so that's definitely an option let's talk a little bit about a couple of other options that you might be more comfortable using uh this is definitely like the final solution that you should be using but this can be a little bit intimidating for some people or they might not have plastic or steel up at the right time or maybe you're playing on a weird map where you don't have access to that or something like that i don't know there are a couple of other solutions i'm going to mention here really fast one of which is one of these if you can find these in the ice biome this is a thermonullifier and basically the way that this works i'm just going to do this really dirty and then we'll come up with a little bit more uh reasonable example after that so these are going to take hydrogen so let me run some hydrogen over here really fast and when you send hydrogen into these they will just cool whatever is around them so i'm going to go ahead and send it in there like that and it's just going to cool whatever's around it and this this cooling factor is okay it's not great you are having to spend hydrogen on this which is not also not great because you ideally want to spend that on producing power but it's an option so let me go ahead and destroy some other stuff here and kind of show how you might want to set this up so maybe you want to set this up in a way that you do something like this where you wall it all off and you could put some hydrogen or something like that in there the key here is that you want to cool something that you're already piping so if you're already piping water that you might want to cool or if you're already piping some oxygen that you might want to cool you want to pipe it through this room and not like cycle the contents of this room other than otherwise it's very wasteful on power so let's say you have something like this i'll clear the floor let me dump in some hydrogen in here as well because again this is one of the better gases for heat transfer and i'd probably want to over pressurize this quite a bit so what i might do is i might do something like this put a high pressure gas vent along the same line where the hydrogen's coming in so the hydrogen just gets dumped into the room until it's over filled and then this thermonullifier will just cool whatever is in here and it can cool stuff down to its condensing point so you could potentially cool hydrogen down to super super low with this thing if you really wanted to there's not a super there's not a real practical way to do this but if you want to do that you could condensation point is negative 421 degrees fahrenheit or negative 252 celsius it's ridiculously cold um that's not what you would want to use it for though i would probably want to use it for if i had some water that i needed to cool or something like that like maybe i wanted to cool regular water i could send it in this way or send it in through some regular pipes but you do run the risk of freezing that water and screwing it up a little bit you could also use this for if you wanted to grow like nosh beans or sleep wheat or something weird like that you could do that you could also use this for your oxygen also so rather than having your cooling flow through here i could just have it flow through somewhere else and i could have it flow through uh this this room so let's do this again you do want to be careful with these things because state changes are always possible so i'm going to let you play around with these if you want to but i i don't recommend these for a handful of reasons and uh yeah the state changes is definitely one of them all right whatever let's just uh let's just have it dump out here i wouldn't normally do this i'd just dump it back into my base but just for the sake of speed uh let's look at this whole setup entirely so the room's getting filled up with hydrogen the hydrogen's coming in here very hot by the way so like 139 and if i just let this run this is going to cool the hydrogen down to insanely low temperatures uh so we'll see that here if i just go ahead and speed it up and then the oxygen that flows here will also be cooled so the oxygen is now uh coming in at a pretty high temperature this is going to obviously heat up the hydrogen but then it's going to be turned around and cooled immediately by uh this thermonullifier uh the effects aren't amazing like this is still coming out at about 50 degrees you will eventually balance out at a point that uh makes sense for what kind of temperature the oxygen is coming in at and coming out at but yeah this is an option you could use if you wanted to use some kind of cooling it's just not that good uh so that's okay let's talk about one other thing uh let's talk about uh weezewarts which we saw a little bit in my other playthrough but uh i wanted to kind of speak on them at a little bit more reasonable level so let's do the same thing with this hydrogen here let's actually pump it into this i'm going to turn off the nullifier by the way and hook everything back up to where it was before uh so we'll just do something like this now this oxygen if it's coming out very hot which you can see it in here at 162 degrees fahrenheit again don't want to be blowing this into my base i need to cool it somehow and if i don't have anything else set up for like the uh steam turbines and aqua tuners and that kind of stuff there is another alternative solution you could use and that is using these which are these plants called weezewarts you can use this in tandem with your draco chambers that will effectively create weezwort food like plant food you could put them in a room like this and flood this room with hydrogen which is why i have it connected that way and why i cleared the room out so let's say we're flooding this up with hydrogen you could put in a bunch of farm tiles like this i'm just estimating here just kind of making some stuff up but what you can do is you can ship in some seeds and then have some arms inside this room some auto sweepers inside this room so that it will just continually add the food to the plants that it needs to to add so you could put it on something like this like a conveyor receptacle so that it would just have the food sitting in here when it needed to feed some of the plants it would just pull it out of this receptacle and actually feed the stuff that's in there you could do the same thing for the seeds also so i'll just set up something like that really fast let's get some shipping here this one's going to be for the phosphorite which is what that plant food is so let's look for this it's going to be an agriculture not fertilizer phosphorite let's have it run down and kind of equally distributed between the two sides so something like this sure and then the other one is going to be for the weezwort seeds which we will grab in just a second uh yeah like this all right so then we have something like this we're gonna need power for all this stuff obviously so we'll just go ahead and hook it up to the power that we're generating from this hydrogen generator sure whatever why not again just being kind of messy um then once you have those in there you can start shipping in some seeds so let's have this asking for seeds which i don't know if we dug out any wart seeds but we might have nope not yet so let's get some access to those really quickly so that we can see it show up there once you have wart seed access you can just have this set for wart seeds your duplicants whenever they find them will run it in here why is this not updating what's happening game what are you doing to me all right fine i'll just spawn some jeez there you can set this for manual use or if you have a way to ship it here automatically that would be better we'll just set it for manual use for right now considering we have duplicates that can use it so if you set it this way duplicants will eventually come up here and fill this thing up and start sending seeds in so we'll do something like this they'll send it into the uh receptacles which will go down like that they'll just kind of chill there then whenever this is asked for you could just be like hey i want to plant a wart seed here because it's too hot there you go same thing with this there you go and then if you wanted to start putting phosphorite in here which i'll just have it asking for it at a pretty high priority we want to set this for manual use as well or we could ship it in here automatically duplicates should show up in a little bit to eventually uh get this all loaded up with plant food and if we have the hydrogen sitting in here the wheeze warts will actively cool this hydrogen because that's just the effects of what they do and then that will keep the hydrogen cold enough so that it will cool down this oxygen that comes through here at a very high temperature so that's effectively another solution let's just get this all up and running all the way so that we can see what it's like and i like to also set it this way so that if i need to add more they can just be sitting in these receptacles and i can just have them grab it and load it in there right away uh duplicants what are you guys doing why are you not bringing me phosphorite we could also just spawn some inside there for the sake of it but i do want to see this whole thing in action there give me some phosphorite part of waiting guys all right they should eventually load this let's see what's happening in our other places by the way now that we have our cooling still sitting here look how cold this is getting oh yeah these are supposed to be buildings that are really hot but we're showing them turning into a nice cold room um you could also potentially put some shutoffs here and stop asking for coolant if this room gets too cold but i don't really care if it's this cold i'll usually leave it like that uh so yeah here we go they're dropping in the phosphor right now and they are letting the uh the arms load them and get them all going so that's great so yeah this is this is pretty much it uh another alternative cooling solution that you could use it'll keep this room nice and cold you can see that the the temperature in here before if you happen to notice it it was around 80 degrees fahrenheit and the way that these wheeze warts work is as they suck in any any type of gas they will just make it colder and then spit it back out so this is another option so in terms of viability i feel like this one's the best if you can get it all up and you have the materials and the power and stuff to get it up if you can't this one's really inexpensive and it will be a byproduct of something you should probably already be doing anyway which is farming or rather ranching uh drecos and then this is like if you find it and you happen to have hydrogen despair uh you could use this it's not amazing but it's it's an option so yeah that's what i've got for cooling um i think that's pretty much it let's review what we've talked about and kind of review uh if you were to follow all the things i was talking about what kind of state you would be in by let's say cycle like 300 or something i'm just kind of making up numbers but that's about where i wind up after i do a lot of this stuff so we started with a base that didn't really have much it had some ranching areas here it had all these living quarters um it had some food that was growing it had these tanks and it had a couple of coal generators and that was that was pretty much it that was our base at that point oh we had some ventilation too what we have done in the meantime is we have added long-term sustainable solutions for everything that we need so we have multiple power sources that is being uh generated by resources that we're just getting for free so we've got that we've got cooling that is very sustainable by something like this all we need to do is spend power to keep it up we have some water that's being cooled for our bristle blossoms and eventually we could actually use the same type of setup for cooling this water as well you could just make more aqua tuners and set it into the aqua tuners whenever you needed colder water so this doesn't necessarily need to be a setup but speaking of food we want we might not need uh bristle blossoms for much longer so we'd eventually just want to be on all drecos which i didn't finish setting up but just just use your imagination pretend it's there or we might have hatches or something like that that's producing enough barbecue the any eggs that are produced by any of our critters would be shipped down to something like this and then killed and turned into meat so that our food would be meat our cooling would be this our power would be a bunch of different sources but mostly free stuff and uh yeah i mean that that pretty much solves everything uh oxygen being the other thing that we covered at the beginning but this is also just being produced by water we have cooling solutions for it uh we are nice and sustainable from this point we could go out and find more power sources on the map we could start getting out into space there's all kinds of stuff we could do because if we did this right we shouldn't need to worry about our base anymore we should be fully sustainable we shouldn't be worried about running out of stuff uh that's the ideal setup for a lot of this stuff so what i really hope that you guys uh get out of a video like this is being able to cross that mid game section that can be really annoying and really frustrating one thing i think that a lot of people experience with this game is they play it they really like the beginning so they kind of get excited about managing all these systems the bass crumbles and then they give up and they don't want to play the game anymore i think that's really sad because this game has a lot to offer and if it's all that's standing in your way is this mid game section i really hope that this video gave you some good ideas and some good guidance on how to get past that mid game section to get into the more late game and exciting parts of the game where you can go out into space and the dlc you'll be able to go to other asteroids and all that kind of fun stuff uh hopefully you'll get there and see the later phases of the game but yeah this this is pretty much what i have for this so thank you guys very much for watching this is another beastly video that i put together but uh let me know what you thought about it let me know if i missed anything let me know if you're just dying and struggling to anything else in the mid game i'm very interested in kind of keeping people happy and and healthy in this type of game because it's very good and there's a lot to see that unfortunately most people don't get to see but yeah let me know what you'd like to see if there's any more tutorials you'd like to see or if you have any requests for certain type of like runs or anything like that let me know most of what i do is fueled by comments that i get on uh various videos so please drop anything down there that you might have thanks for watching i'll see you back here really soon for some more videos tutorials more lulls alright have a good one [Music] you
