hi I'm Lisa my goal with accurate English is to transform your English and to take it to the final level of fluency accurate pronunciation is a big part of that [Music] this is part two of common pronunciation mistakes you must fix most of these words are very common but they're often mispronounced I hear these mistakes all the time let's make sure that you're pronouncing these 17 words correctly and then at the end of the video I will give you a review quiz so that you can find out which words you still need to practice you will see me teaching Anna she's an actress and a model in Los Angeles she made excellent progress and you can too okay let's get started let's look at the first word let's learn the correct pronunciation of this word you try it let's look at the first part of the word the t is pronounced as a fast D or a flat T like this litter litter litter the a is pronounced as a schwa sound and the last part is pronounced as cure sure and now let's say the whole word first slowly and then after that naturally literature you say it and now let's say it naturally literature literature she studied classic literature I love Russian literature let's look at these two words how do we pronounce them the verb is easier to pronounce it's maintain a a how about the noun form how do we pronounce it the middle e is silent and let's hold the t like this maintenance maintenance and we reduce the second a first let's say it slowly maintenance maintenance and now let's say it naturally maintenance maintenance maintenance means the repairs that are necessary to keep something in good condition repeat after me the maintenance costs are high let's learn the correct pronunciation of the singular and plural forms of this word how do we pronounce the singular form you say it the O is pronounced the same as the U in the words up and fun and Summer and the same as the o sound in love and brother so we say month month don't round your lips don't say month it's month and make sure there's a vibration of air on your tongue for the th month month what happens when we add the s in that case most native speakers do not pronounce the th most native speakers simply say months months one month two months occasionally some people might pronounce a very quick very short th and they might say months but the majority of people drop the th let's listen to some native speakers for around 11 months these last few months people whose symptoms affect their quality of life for months repeat after me I went there two months ago I'll see you in a few months the syllable stress is different and the vowel sounds are different in these words let's listen to Anna practice it after she practiced it for a while she was able to say it well the photographer takes good photographs the photographer takes good photographs let's do it again the photographer takes good photographs photographer photographer the photographer takes good photograph photographs photographs so one is ah and one is O photographer photographs oh my God yes photographers photograph that's right the photographer takes good photographs the photographer takes good photographs photographs photographs and that tea is going to be photo photo photo photographs good job let's look at the first word we're gonna stress the second syllable and the O is gonna sound like an ah repeat after me photographer let's reduce the first o f photographer he's a very good photographer and in the second word we stress the first syllable and we reduce the second o and the first o sounds like this o o photograph repeat after me photograph that's a beautiful photograph and now let's make a sentence using both of those words the photographer took that photograph do you know how to pronounce this word correctly you say it the pH sounds like an f and the g is silent did you know that the most common meaning in English is the liquid that comes up when you're coughing or when you have an allergy and there's a liquid that liquid is called phlegm repeat after me I have phlegm in the back of my throat I'm coughing up phlegm don't say flagma it's phlegm let's make sure that you can pronounce this word perfectly you say it first how do you say it we say reg and then what happens to the letter U we don't say ooh we say you rag you and then the letter a is reduced it's not regular it's reg you lure regular and let's add the ending regularly regularly I go to the gym fairly regularly we see each other pretty regularly what do you do regularly make some sentences and say them out loud so that you can practice the pronunciation let's make sure that you can pronounce this word correctly a lot of my students make mistakes on this one how do we pronounce this word you say it did you pronounce the L the L is silent so we don't say Salman we say salmon and if you notice I reduce the O I didn't say salmon I said salmon salmon and because we're stressing the first syllable let's make that a big salmon salmon repeat after me I have salmon for lunch I'd like some salmon don't say Salman the L is silent this word is difficult to pronounce can you pronounce it correctly it's difficult because it has three consonant sounds at the end and the S is next to the th and that's always difficult and you need to pronounce all of those sounds so let's say them slowly first and then more quickly and then you will listen to some native speakers saying it let's say six let's make that s long we have to hear that s six six and then let's slowly add the th six six that transition from the s to the th inside your mouth with your tongue needs to be smooth let's do that again sixth sixth and now let's say it a little bit more quickly sixth sixth let's listen to some native speakers call the fifth and sixth discontinuities that's almost half of the internet population and a sixth of humanity accounting for over one-sixth of Humanity's carbon emissions only 16 that's one six can you pronounce this word correctly you say it did you pronounce it with a silent B the B is silent so we say it like this subtle subtle if something is subtle it's not easy to notice or understand unless you pay careful attention repeat after me the differences are subtle the change was subtle so remember don't say subtle the B is silent this word is difficult to pronounce especially in American English the first part is and then the a is a schwa sound Thea Thea and the t is a flap t or a fast D it sounds like this let's say it slowly and then more quickly repeat after me theater theater and now let's say it more quickly theater let's go to the theater how do we pronounce this word you say it this word is difficult to pronounce for two different reasons the vowel sound plus the B the B is silent and the vowel sound is probably not what you think look at this word in this case we say o comb I comb my hair how do we pronounce the O in this word we say a bomb and the B is also silent in both of those words bomb so it's comb and bomb but how about this word it's did you know that let's practice saying it in a sentence repeat after me what's written on the tombstone have you ever seen King Tut's tomb so we don't say tomb we say tomb let's repeat all three words comb bomb tomb English spelling is crazy isn't it how do we pronounce this word how do we pronounce the AR it's pronounced the same as the o r in this word these two words are homophones repeat after me war war they won the war War and the past tense of to where is war I wore my jacket so war and War exactly the same pronunciation don't say War can you pronounce this word correctly let's listen to Anna practice it water okay open your mouth water water it's a soft W water water would you like a glass of water would you like a glass of water good good that sounds good first you need to round your lips for the W and then open your lips big for the ah sound and then because the t is between two vowel sounds we're gonna pronounce it like a fast D or what we call a flap T and then don't forget the American r at the end ER so it sounds like this water water you say it I'd like a glass of water and now let's say a sentence that has three words with that fast D sound repeat after me I bought a bottle of water I bought a bottle of water and now a sentence with four American T sounds it's that fast D repeat after me I bought a little bottle of water let's say it more quickly I bought a little bottle of water let's make sure that you're pronouncing this word correctly a lot of my students mispronounce it how do you say it did you say where or did you say were the E is silent so imagine a w and an R next to each other were were yes we were where were they the common mistake is to pronounce both of those words the same so we don't say where where they we say where were they where were they be careful about that one how do we pronounce the O of this word you say it we say one one it's the same vowel sound as in up or fun or summer so don't say one it's one the O is sometimes pronounced that way other words that have the o sound that is pronounced as an uh include love love or mother or done done and this word is pronounced exactly the same as this word so we say I won the game or number one same pronunciation one one one two three we don't say one two three repeat after me one are you pronouncing these two words correctly we have the singular form and the plural form and a lot of my students are confused about the pronunciation let's look at the singular form first the O sounds like this it's the same sound as in book or push and then we reduce the a because it's an unstressed syllable repeat after me woman woman and in the plural form the O is pronounced differently the O sounds like this it's the same sound as in Big or give or this so we say and then the second syllable is reduced repeat after me women and now let's say both of them singular woman woman plural women she's a nice woman they're nice women practice saying those words a few more times so that you can say them perfectly now it's time for a review quiz to see if you remember the correct pronunciation of the words we just practiced you will see a word on the screen first you say the word and then I will say it and that way you can compare your pronunciation with mine let's look at the first word you say the word the correct pronunciation is literature literature how about this word maintenance maintenance did you hold that t maintenance how about this one months months photograph photographer phlegm regularly salmon sixth sixth subtle subtle theater tomb tomb War water were were one woman women women how did you do if you didn't pronounce a word correctly write it down and then practice
