hello and welcome it to Bruin farm today we are going to talk about fermented grain for your chickens so I've been feeling fermented grain smashing into a wire and I've had a few comment so I thought I would show you a quick process of how I set it up so basically fermented grain is just fermenting some barley us and wait for me and adding it to your chicken feet and I feed my chickens now probably 80% fermented foods and then with the addition of layers though it's just so they can get all the minerals and the calcium may need the egg-laying now what you want to start with is just a bag of normal green so I go from the feed store and I buy this and this this is just a plain barley this is just a bag of barley now this whole bag I think it's a 25 kilogram bag and it's 6 pounds 50 so what's that that's about $10 and it goes a long way it works out cheaper than your normal as atom pellets so obviously the first good reason to keep for feeding them and this fermenter grain is it's cheaper and so what I do is you've got an easy bucket can you take your crane you want it milled so you want the the sheets off you can see there's a few sheets in here but you may have basically what just the the barley or the wheat or whatever you're gonna use over and you want to put some into a bowl into a pocket rather I normally put a good scoop because I've got a good few chickens right so that's about 1/3 of a packet then what you want to do is you want to add water and the water is the process that is gonna start the therm it and now there's num number of numerous reasons for doing this ferment and it basically starts the digestive process so it starts to break down this grain so that the chickens can digest it more easily it's the same with fermented foods for humans so you can see here obviously the wheat the chap has come off and you've got the seeds and what happens is as it starts to ferment the bacteria start to break down the food and make the minerals inside this more easily digestible and so your chickens can absorb them quicker and also as the bacteria are breaking it down and fermented the fermentation processes is moving on the bacteria are also creating extra nutrients themselves to aid digestion the other major major benefit of this is I find it feels my chickens up quicker than layers pallet so with layers they will just gorge on it too it's good if it's there they'll eat it till it's gone with this they eat it it feels that their crop makes them feel fuller quicker so they not only eat less which obviously saves me money but for their welfare it's even better as well because when an animal isn't hungry it can invest more time into socialization and other things so I find that my chickens because they're fuller and they're not searching out for food they socialize more they just bathe they preen so it's kind of good for animal welfare on that sidetrack so we've created our firm and and then basically what you want to do is you want to leave this for two or three days and you want to stir it every day because obviously you want other grains at the bottom to get as fermented as the ones at the top and you all need to fill out with water as well because this is gonna swell dramatically this barley it's gonna swell dramatically as it takes on water it's gonna rise so you're gonna keep meaning to fill that up then after two or three days what you're gonna get is this now you can see from just from the scum on the surface these bubbles that the fermentation process has started you can also tell from the smell obviously you can't smell it and you can see the Flies love it so if you're also making a homemade fly leo or a wasp law then you can use this water because this is very attractive to flies and that's just a little side addition that you can use now if I give it a good stir you can see how much this weight or this barley rather has doubled up and you can see it started to in a few places split so you can see here a few of these little seeds you can see those white bits are where these seeds have actually started to kind of germinate a little bit and the the bacteria have come in and they've started to break some of these suits down and then other seeds have actually started to germinate in the cells so this is perfect for feeding to the chickens now and so literally has just taken a couple of days in warmer weather obviously it takes less time to get going but you can see I think if I do a comparison there's there's our ferment after two days and here's the fresh barley that I've just put in so you can see just how different it is and the ferment is way more fuller the other thing I should say is the because it's taking on so much water your chickens will drag drink less from the feeder as well from the drinkers because they're taking in a lot of moisture with this so basically the Ben it's I've asked it's less it costs less it fills them up quicker so they've got time to do other things so it's better for their welfare you can use the juice as a flywheel and there are also drink less because they're also getting a lot of moisture and with this and eating less and drinking more in the food or sea means another thing less poo and that's one thing we could all do with is less chicken poo now the way that I feed my chickens you don't want to feed them all to see this because it's gonna slop in so I just take a flowerpot and it's really good and you can just go in get a good pot worth strain off all the excess liquid and then you can feed it direct I tend to keep the liquid in there because that's already started fermenting I can add grain to it and I find that the ferment process is then shortened because obviously that water already has a lot of bacteria in it so let's take this down to the girls at the bottom of the garden I can show you how much they love their grain let's go down and we've had a clearing day day today so I've been putting compost out and a lot of the beds as you can see ready for winter [Applause] here they are hello girls and boys you can see how much they love it they're like attacking it already to take down the netting you ready and that is what you call it a feeding frenzy so as you can see they absolutely adore this grain I'm actually going to take some out if I can get my hand in there for the Ducks so I highly recommend making fermented grain for your chickens as I say it's it's cheaper than your layers palettes you still do need to offer a layers pellets or whatever else you're cleaning because the layers pallets are carefully created to offer all the minerals and the calcium and things like that your chickens do need for egg laying and for growing but I find that if I give them fermented feed every single day the amount of layers plates they eat is far less so it goes a lot longer I've really reduced my feed bill through this method and I've got a happier chickens as a result if you want to tame your chickens up a little bit this is a very good way of doing it little Paulie Ola she's both broody and melting she looks the right mess so there you go that is a quick overview of fermented barley for you so it really is that easy just stir that firm in a few times a day just to make sure you got an even spread of fermentation process and maybe get a couple of buckets on the girls were especially got a lot of chickens so we've always got some coming through because once you use one bucket up obviously there'll be a dinner a couple of days gap before we get my next one so if you have a like conveyor belt of grain you've always got some on hand if you've liked the video please hit the thumbs up button and hit subscribe if you've got any questions please just pop a question in the comments and also tell me how you feed your chickens and if you use the fermentation process and how it goes for you if you're on Facebook come across and join us and Bremen farms community group but for now I shall say goodbye [Music]
