it's definitely possible for a swordsman to block an incoming crossbow but it would take a lot of practice oh that's interesting so he's kind of preparing but he's also grabbing him by the hand this is a not a good position what would you do about this okay so i think that the only thing i could do would be to try and back up and maybe duck because the way that ryan's arm is he can't go much further than this [Applause] hello my name is tyler and i'm ryan and we are sword experts today we're going to be breaking down the fighting scene from the netflix show the witcher [Music] he's like oh i have to kill people now oh you're gonna die so [Music] oh did he wait did he just block another crossbow bolt [Music] he did oh wow oh my god i know so here yeah here's here's pretty cool is that leopard advanced to butcher oh that was crazy depending on how skilled you are you might just not make it through the first arrow yeah but that guy is really hard to block that exactly so first you have to do that but i think in the right hands if the person is really tactical and they use their environment yeah their skills just in the most optimal way i think they would have a chance if i were geralt and i knew i was a freaking mutant who can like force push people i i'd be pretty confident yeah be confident too i'd feel like i could take this so the crossbow guy it's definitely possible for a swordsman to block an incoming crossbow bolt but it would take a lot of practice if it was just a normal guy i would put the money on the crossbar exactly yeah i attempted to parry a few of these training arrows that a friend of mine had with like the rubber tips on the end i was able to parry them but the tips added so much weight that i feel like an actual arrow would be quicker probably more unreactable interesting a crossbow has like the tension of the bolt on the wire so it's way quicker than a human yeah yeah there's obviously a lot of risk involved in that confrontation so either the crossbow guy's gonna hit him or the crossbow guy's gonna get parried or miss and then while you're sitting there trying to load up your costume yeah you're done for us yeah so once you've shot your bolts that's it yeah and you can even see in the fight the dude where he parried the crossbow later on he's still trying to wire it up and he just throws a sword at him all the weight is pretty much on the hilt though just to support the physics of the blade so i think you'd have to be really close to compensate for like how quickly the blade would bend down yeah it was fairly close yeah that you got it really bad oh no that was like a six yeah that was a pair of six nice what is it [Music] all right so perry is a basically a block or a deflection right so when he comes in instead of just holding on for dear life and hoping he doesn't hit me it's he comes in i deflect right and then that leaves him open for a wide open kill there are a lot of different pairs that you can do so each perry kind of corresponds with a different part of the body so imagine that your body is divided into quadrants if you're a righty six is on the chest sword side so perry six is defending that part of your body yeah your natural guard is on your yes and then your uh your other guard over here would be four so when you block that first crossbow bolt if you see really quick he does a really fast circle six and just circles it out of there yeah he blocks it so perry one is right here imagine you're just pulling the sword out of your sheath right perry two perry three perry four perry five perry six seven eight perry nine and then there's also perry ten which is the useless stage fighting one which is like over here so he comes in over that way right [Music] oh that's interesting so he's kind of preparing but he's also grabbing him by the hand this is a not a good position all right right you have less reach like this so if i'm here he can still come around we might both die yeah so you would have to like move out of the way that's way better yeah as you're doing if we really wanted to make this look crazy legit right so i'm here i just boom and then through the net you know i still have control over it and i'm not having to do this weird angle yeah i just have to boom boom because he's using the advantage of the angle there because i can't get a good pair of here it's too exactly yeah plus this way i have the guard here he can't do anything that was a cool one boom yeah around the neck i like that one but i still think that'd be much faster if you were going instead just go whack to the head and then boom oh yeah because that's hard to bring the the blade around for that one yeah and yeah kind of what we're seeing before like with the unnecessary spins and choreography yeah uh the spin's actually unnecessary here but it does look really cool yeah that dude's got like some weird like cleavers okay so it's a big cleaver yeah with a secondary grip on top i guess that would make it more of a defensive stance yes because you'd be able to i just don't know how you would use that i don't know how you would fight with that yeah i guess he couldn't pull it off dude but it's a pretty cool unique weapon and goodbye to your head i think it would be pretty difficult to cut someone's head off especially how clean as geralt does especially with like one hand to have an attack of that caliber you would have to do some type of stepping motion yeah it would have to be a big swing something that would have a lot of preparation to do in its attack and also uh probably rough on the recovery like after you do that you probably couldn't immediately fight someone exhausting yeah like cutting a small tree in half honestly like it's to balance her thrust yeah because holding your sword out like this takes a lot of shoulder strength and arm strength so i think it's just a little holster yeah because her starting makes it thrust it's a little impractical but it's also like a lot of work went into this i know i just think about it just thinking about like what the choreographers were doing and then like oh man the actors had to learn this and the fact they're able to perform at the speed yeah yeah every single second has like yeah two to three movements feet and blades crazy that's the crazy thing the actors train for months lauren fights to do a 30 second fight yes this is a crazy fight these are all crazy dudes [Music] the distance of the dagger and the distance of the short sword are more complimentary because they favor more close combat and speed so it would make less sense to have a long sword and a dagger because then you'd be trying to fight on two different fronts yep two different ranges dude i just caught that when she put her hands behind her back she put oh yeah subtle dude that's cool so he got stabbed twice and then when he held it with his raw hand yeah absolutely that's crazy [Music] so what would you do about this okay so i think that the only thing i could do would be to try and back up and maybe duck because the way that ryan's arm is he can't go much further than this do you see how his elbow gets all whack it's very hard to aim and to get a powerful hit like this with the way he's holding it which is why i think he later adjusts to it but i think my best guess would be to maybe back up and try and duck or something but it's so scary to do anything with your throat right there yeah this is the checkmate like they got you you know yeah can't protect your throat you're dead so what'd you think of the fighting it was way over the top but also really cool yeah that was really fun to watch for sure a lot of the concepts in there like you know blocking and then immediately going to kill right that was in there that's realistic that's good yeah and the underhanded stuff the reverse grip stuff is totally impractical they did the showy like impractical version to show he's special yes which is fine he's the witcher he's a mutant you know what i want to try i want a master all the way yeah toss a coin to your witcher oh valley of plenty whoa [Music] two
