December 2, 2000: The Battle of the Undefeated faced of in one of 2000โs best fights between Tito Trinidad and Fernando Vargas in a Light Middleweight Unification.
This fight was a absolute war with Knockdowns, points taken away and a brutal twelfth round finish by Tito.
Vargas was coming in as the IBF 154 Pound Champ getting notable wins over future undisputed Light Middleweight Champion in Winky Wright, Former Welterweight Champion being Ike Quartey and Yori Boy Campas. While Trinidad was coming off his title defense vs Thiam, his brutal title win vs Reid and his controversial win of the Welterweight Titles over De La Hoya.
Vargas would go 6-4 after this fight, winning the WBA Light Middleweight title, however losing that title in a war against Oscar De La hoya for the WBC and Lineal titles as well, Vargas would go on a 4 fight winning streak, however would end his career on a 3 fight losing streak losing to Shane Mosley twice and losing to Mayorga in his retirement fight.
Trinidad would move up after this fight to compete in the Middleweight Tournament which would crown a undisputed champion, he would win the WBA Title from Joppy but would be given a boxing lesson by Bernard Hopkins in the final for all the belts. Trinidad would never be the same after Hopkins, ending his career incredibly inactive with his last fight before his comeback happening 8 months after. However Trinidad would look great in his fight against Mayorga which was 2 years after but be beaten into retirement by Winky Wright in a WBC Title Eliminator. But boxers donโt ever stay retired, so he would come back for a Roy Jones fight where he would lose but would get a nice pay day for his last fight.
This is one of my most watched fights ever, probably second behind Corrales-Castillo 1.
Didnโt win fight of the year, and that was fair, because Barrera-Morales 1 was so amazing. But I like fights that end in a knockout because of the more definitive conclusion.
I think Nady or the corner could have stopped it after the second KD of the 12th. Vargas was done after that
One of my all time favorites... Fernando was an absolute dog. Tito, a skilled boxer and charming showman. The better man won, and the entire fight was exciting. Awesome fight. 10/10.
I own this fight on vhs and donโt even own a vcr lol.
Tito was awesome and too bad he is not him fighting into todays era against Spence and Bud .
First fight I watched.
Vargas never looked the same after this fight, huge Tito fan. Underatted career IMO.
This was Trinidad's best and worst fight. His best because the action and drama of this fight is the reason I love boxing. The back and forth was amazing. His worst because he became a head hunter after this fight. He believed his own hype and fell in love with his power. Stopped going to the body, using his jab and breaking guys down in a measured but calculated fashion.
Vargas showed huge heart in this fight.
