listening and let's get on with the video before starting the case I want to tell you two things this is a patreon voted case so my patrons voted for me to do this specific case I also want to give a disclaimer or a trigger warning whatever you want to call it this case does involve horrific crimes against children I am sensitive about it I don't go into details and specifics violence against children it's something that really bothers me and it's a soft spot for me it's a pressure point for me and I know a lot of you share that so just so you know going in that is what you should be expecting but it's an important case to talk about even though this happened in the 1960s I think that it's still a very prevalent case in the UK I think it's something that obviously mistakes with everybody in that country because of the fact that it was just so shocking these two killers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley are just such sadistic horrible people everybody I have talked to from England says the same like England remembers this England was completely shocked by this they couldn't believe that this happened now that we've gotten that out of the way let's dive into the lives of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley and the Moors Murders Myra Hindley was born on July 23rd 1942 to Nellie and Bob Hindley Nellie was 22 years old at the time that Myron was born and her father Bob was fighting in the first world war so he was not around for the first three years of her life Mira's grandmother Ellen who she just called gran helped her raise Myra for the first three years of her life while her father was gone and now he moved in with Alan and they all kind of lived there until Bob got back from the war and when he did they moved right down the street from gran so that Myra would still be close civilian life wasn't easy for Bob Hanley when he came back from the war he began to drink heavily slap his wife around his wife fought back the two would have such crazy and violent arguments that gran would have to come and get Myra Myra had a complicated relationship with her father she hated him for the way he treated her mother but she also longed for his approval she later would talk about how she always wanted her mother to stand up to her father but she never did because she was weak Myra would see to it that she was never weak or pushed around her younger sister Maureen was born on August 21st 1946 and Myra moved in with gran which pleased Myra her grandmother gave her whatever she wanted and she didn't have to deal with a daily conflict at home between her parents when Myra was five she began school at peacock Street primary a short three minute walk from her home from a young age it was clear that Myra was able to hold her own against the other kids her father was a championship a boxer in the army and he'd taught her to fight back if she was getting bullied or pushed around she had once gone to him for pointers on how to defend herself if there was kids who were picking on her and after he had taken her outside and shown her how to throw a punch she went and found that boy who had been bothering her she knocked him out and when she told her father about it he was proud in my opinion it was at this time that Myra began to associate violence with positive feelings of love and acceptance Myra was a pleasant looking girl with dark hair and a wide smile that reached her eyes she was born into a society of people who worked hard in the local factories got married and had babies and it seemed to everyone who knew her that these were her aspirations as well aside from her parents tumultuous relationship their violent fights and Mira's father's tendency to spend most of his time at the bar after work Mira's family was considered to be respected in the area Myra was considered to be a nice young woman she and her friend rocked and enlisted to babysit the local children because they were so good with children and Myra actually made it her business to kind of defend those who could not defend themselves she took it upon herself to become a protector for her friends for the local children for kids who were smaller than her and were getting picked on she loved reading and writing and she was very good at both from a young age her favorite book was the secret garden and I mean isn't it everybody's favorite book if you're a girl and you're young I know it was my all-time favorite book that and the little princess I read them over and over and over again one of the essays that she wrote for school was so good that it was bound and put in a school's library despite this is she left school at the age of 15 shortly after a close friend of hers Michael Higgins had died when drowning in a reservoir she obviously struggled with feelings of a guilt about this there are reports that he had asked her to come swimming with him that day and she figured being the protector that she was if she'd been there with him when it all happened she could have saved him a lot of people who are familiar with this case think that Myra was a good person until she met Ian and that he sort of corrupted her I disagree I think Myra had issues since the very beginning when she was 15 and she dropped out of school she got a job at a Cadillac company as a temp and her co-workers have said that when she first started she came in and was crying because she lost her paycheck and they all liked her and felt bad for her so they pulled their money together to reimburse her everybody was kind of a little bit agitated when not long after she came in and said she'd lost her paycheck again because they knew that she was lying during the same time as well she died her naturally brown hair a bleached blonde for a more dramatic look and she never went back after that she started wearing a heavy eye makeup and putting her hair in a really like bouffant kind of teased and high style her younger sister Maureen who also had dark hair naturally kept her hair dark but she followed suit wearing a dark eye makeup and putting her hair in that big puffed out beehive style Myra had always been raised in the Catholic Church and with Catholic beliefs so when she was 16 she found herself especially intrigued by religion and she threw herself wholeheartedly into her beliefs even telling all the boyfriends that she dated she was abstaining from premarital sex over the next few years she bounced from job to job and when she was 18 years old her steady boyfriend at the time proposed to her and she happily accepted but when she told her mother her mother was not so happy about the situation now we thought it was a bad idea that Myra would marry her first serious boyfriend that she should experience life while she was still young before long Myra began to agree with this way of thinking she started to become annoyed by certain things about her fiance he was boring he was dull he didn't like to go out dancing he didn't want to have fun he wasn't that smart she watched her friends and girls her own age get married and start popping out babies and she got panicked she started to see her life as the same path that her mother had taken tied to the kitchen always worried about money and at the whim of some working-class man with the dirt under his fingernails and gin on his breath she began to resent this idea of domestic bliss that had once been an aspiration of hers and she even considered leaving the country and working abroad but she knew she would have a hard time leaving her younger sister Maureen who was her best friend in December of 1960 she got a job at mill words merchandising company it was here that she met a stock clerk who immediately caught her attention because of the lack of attention he gave her Ian Brady was born to a single mother on January 2nd 1938 the same day Time magazine named Adolf Hitler man of the year he was born in Glasgow Scotland and at birth he was named Ian Duncan Stewart I knew very little about his biological father besides that he was a journalist who had died three months before he was born his mother Maggie Stuart was 28 and rented a single room for herself and her new baby she began to struggle when she was unable to get a job because of her lack of daycare and after four months of trying to make it work she was forced to give him up for adoption she put a notice in a shop window offering one pound a week to anyone who was willing and able to care for her baby he was taken in by Mary and Jana Sloane cat mill workers who already had four children and weren't in much better a financial condition than his mother was they were good people though when they treated Ian like he was their own and he grew up to love them very much and call them MA and DA the Sloane's also allowed Maggie to come and visit her son every Sunday where she called herself Peggy and would bring him little gifts whatever she could afford at the time when he was five he began attending Camden Street primary he was praised for academics especially English from a young age Ian claims that he remembered not believing in God and during the Sunday school when the teacher would ask who doesn't believe in God he would be the one to raise his hand now it's very likely that being at such a young age at that point he was unable to understand the depth of that question and he didn't really know what he was answering because he's also described as loving Christmas loving Christmas music and saying his prayers regularly every night until he was 11 years old although he describes his childhood as being normal and filled with a lot of friends and normal childhood activities a young man who lived near him at the time remembers him a little bit differently he claims that Ian was somebody who always carried a pocketknife around and once he tied him to a steel post covered him with newspapers and then set the newspapers on fire like many people who turn to violence later in life there was of course rumors and statements such as these that you know flew around about Ian and his childhood for the most part from what I could gather he was a pretty normal kid and there weren't really any signs of what he would turn into later there were rumors that he was cool to animals a former neighbor of the Sloane's have said she had seen him throw a cat out of window to its death Brady himself staunchly denies these stories he said he may never have been a fan of people but he was always very much in love with all the animals he said one day he found a horse who had broken his leg and he was traumatized by the pain and suffering that he saw and that horse's eyes and another time he was at the zoo and he saw a boy teasing a tiger through the bars and he promptly knocked him out when his family got a black and tan a cocker spaniel leaned to Sheila Ian and Sheila were inseparable and the conclusion of the movie King Kong when the ape falls to his death after making sure that the lead actress is safe it brought Ian to tears every single time I think it's really common when people go on to do bad things to search for a sign that they were run since the beginning but with Ian Brady there wasn't a lot in his childhood to suggest the kind of path that he would take again a person he would be he had a loving adapted family he was still in contact with his birth mother who also loved and doted on him he was good in school he had friends he seemed to be pretty social and well-adjusted he was 9 when he became attracted to the power and the pull of wide open spaces the Sloane's had brought him on a picnic to Loch Lomond often considered the boundary between the Scottish lowlands and Highlands Ian had been born and raised in a city and this was his first time witnessing a landscape of different than buildings and roads it was a very powerful experience for him he felt that there was something ancient and mysterious about these vast landscapes untouched by man and his emotions and being confronted with such a sight were so strong he was moved to laugh and cry at the same time when the Sloane's didn't know where he had gotten off to they found him standing on one of the hills and staring off into the distance since world war ii had started house building had stopped and overcrowding and poverty had reached a peak in the larger scottish cities the government decided something needed to be done immediately to get the people out of the slums and called for 50,000 homes to be built per year the Sloane's had been living with her now five children in a two-bedroom home and Clydebank and they were now given a new home in public about 11 miles away the new house had three bedrooms an indoor bathroom in a garden with woods and a river nearby so ian was happy to have more natural surroundings and he could often be found working in their garden by this time ian had figured out that the woman who called herself Peggy was his real mother and the move to Pollock had actually started minimising her visits to him she had begun a relationship with Patrick Brady he was ex-military and now he was a market Porter and eventually she moved with him to Manchester in the UK so she wasn't able to see her son as often the visits stopped all together at one point but she continued to communicate with him through letters he began attending shoreland Academy a secondary school it was a school made up mainly of children who came from wealthy families but Ian had lucked out when they began adding students from working-class backgrounds even though he was the new kid he made friends quickly and emerged as the dominant figure in a group of six boys during his time at the school ian was known as the kid who loved the Nazi Party he had read many books about the Nazis and he talked incessantly about the things he learned and when he played war games with the other children he was always a German soldier this gives me very jim jones vibes because if you watch my Jones Sound series this is exactly what Jim Jones did when he was a kid he loved the Nazis he respected Adolf Hitler and when he played war games with his friends he was always a Nazi soldier and we know how that ended he was very young when he first started dating he was only 11 when he met his first girlfriend who had long strawberry blond hair high cheekbones and almond shaped eyes he recalls that they used to kiss so violently both of their mouths would bleed sounds really horrible soon after that he began dating another girl with almond shaped eyes and her name was Evelyn grant Ian Brady claims that there is an understated craziness - Evelyn that he was attracted to he was just insanely drawn to her and even though they had a romantic relationship a hand-holding and the like it was as pretty much chaste he wanted to keep a Boleyn untouched he said as she represented something for him that was pure and innocent but he then began to date another girl named birdy who wasn't from his school with birdy he was able to explore his sexual desires and allegedly they were both bisexual so they would often to go out and find another boy or girl to bring in on their exploits and then something happened Ian Brady that he would never forget something that caused what he called the first major change in me when he was 12 Sheila became sick and he and hovered over her wrapping her in blankets and laying with her stroking her fur and whispering prayers into the abyss making deals with God that if he would only let Sheila live you know do whatever he wanted one day he left the house to go to the movies and when he got back he noticed his mother had been crying he ran into the living room to find his dog who had been laying on the chair and sleeping when he'd left she wasn't there and he knew what had happened he angrily left the house crying just aimlessly walking the streets and after that he does I did that there was no God he said quote sheila was dead everything in the world would die my grief was mollified now I knew that I too would die like Sheila there were no limits now there were no restraints on contempt and he claims he walked back home reborn the realization of one's own inevitable death is called mortality salience and when this happens in a young child who may not have the developed brain capacity yet to handle or understand such a revelation it can be very traumatic and have long lasting effects personally I I've always struggled with this the thoughts that I will die one day it brings me great anxiety it has kept me up at night before it's something that I live with every day so I understand how difficult and life-changing and life-altering that realization can be for somebody but for Ian Brady it almost seems like it gave him the opposite feeling he didn't feel anxious he didn't feel scared he felt almost like a peace and a sense of control if he was gonna die one day anyways why did anything matter like he knew what was gonna happen and so nothing mattered because one day he'd be gone and the world would keep going on as it was without him as if he'd never been there despite being given opportunities to live in a more well-off area and attend a better school Ian turned to petty crime he ended up in juvenile court in 1951 when he was just 13 years old he and his group of friends had started committing robberies it started off small they would you know steal money from their teacher to buy cigarettes or just swipe food off the shelves at the stores but eventually they began breaking into people's houses and they got caught the court decided that the boys all came from families of good characters so they just got probation and we're told to never do it again the warning did not deter yen from committing more robberies and he found himself back in juvenile court only a year later where he was given more probation and Brady began to realize that a change would come over him every autumn as the air turned cooler and crisper and leaves began drift down from the trees Ian would feel a sense of emptiness settle into him he would feel depressed and forgetful and find that entire days and weeks were becoming blank spots in his memory during this time he heard through school gossip that one of his classmates had turned him in so he cornered this kid in the locker room and he said when the kids saw him you knew what was coming and he was terrified it gave him a new feeling a sense of control over another human being a thrill of having somebody just cower in front of you and be you know at your mercy and he really liked that he ended up sexually abusing the boy on the locker room floor the boy actually became somebody that he would see I'm a regular basis and Ian would force him to put on lipstick and called him Jasmine when he was 15 Ian left school and Lake Myra bounced around from job to job none of these jobs these boring everyday average jobs could hold his interest even at a young age he had already developed quite the ego and superiority complex he felt he was meant for more than menial work in his opinion the only reason that you should be working was to make money so that she would do what you actually wanted to do I think a lot of people feel that way honestly when he was 16 he was caught robbing houses again and this time he was deported they sent him to Manchester and England to live with his mother and stepfather and even though he had not seen her and so long they had kept in touch through letters and he hadn't lost his affection for her or vice versa Ian fell into life with Maggie and Patrick legally taking his stepfathers surname Brady Ian and Patrick got along well and the neighbors described as quiet and respectful to his parents he basically kept himself but he would sometimes take trips to Scotland to see his foster family but this copacetic life would not last long in December he was working at a fruit market and he helped a truck driver steal some lead seals to be sold a scrap and when the driver was caught he implicated Ian in the fact in December of 1955 he was sentenced to two years at a borstal called Latchmere house which is basically a detention centre for offenders under the age of 23 in January of 1956 he was transferred to hets ville borstal in your sure it was a place for inmates who had a smaller criminal record but after getting drunk and attacking a warden he was sent to a maximum-security borstal in Hubble where he spent the next two years because he was adept with numbers he was given bookkeeping training and he also became a student of crime when he was 19 he was finally released and he went back to live with his mother and stepfather who had told all the neighbors that Ian had just gotten in with a bad crowd of boys that they had been bad influences on him and he really was a good kid and everybody kind of went for that because like I said he was quiet he kept to himself he was always well-dressed and clean he always seemed respectful to his mother nobody really had a problem with him he was attractive to the local girls as well who saw him as sort of a James Dean figure handsome with a little streak of darkness kind of the ultimate bad boy when the family moved to Westmoreland Street in the long side area of Manchester Ian became a regular at the long side local library this is where he discovered his favorite books and he began to shape his theories and ideologies that would pretty much dictate what he believed and what he wanted other people to believe for the rest of his life this is where he discovered his favorite books and began to build the theories and ideals that would shape who he became and what he would do in life crime and punishment by russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky a novel in which the main plot involves a murder committed by the main character who struggles with a dual personality that he can never reconcile he kills because he believes society will be better for it and feeling that he is intelligent and stable enough to deal with the mental and physical consequences of it ian was also a fan of the writer the Marquis de Sade a French nobleman revolutionary and philosopher who died in a mental asylum in 1814 and whose works revolved heavily around magic and the connection between sexual pleasure and violence to put it lightly in February of 1959 he got a job as a sack clerk at Millers and at this point he pretty much flew under the radar he showed up on time he pretty much kept to himself when it was needed but also interacted with everybody else when it was needed if that makes sense like he interacted with people just enough so that they wouldn't be like that guy's kind of a loner but he preferred to be on his own he preferred to be in the break room during lunch reading mine Kampf I'm not lying he would read mine Kampf in the break room at lunch by himself eating his lunch but he would sometimes if it was really necessary play card games or board games with the other employees during the lunch break so like I said they wouldn't think he was the AG guy who was always sitting alone in the corner reading Nazi propaganda however they did notice that he had a little bit of a temper when he would lose the board games he'd get very upset even though he had learned all about criminal activity while he was in the forrestal's he had planned to become a criminal when he got out and was set back into society those had all been put on hold he was kind of just like I said flying under the radar now trying to stay on the straight and narrow make some money and I think what he didn't have was somebody who was on board with him he thought he was superior he thought he was better than other people and he knew or thought in his head that he could commit these crimes that were so perfect he would never get caught and he didn't really want to do that alone he didn't want to have all of this perfection put out into the universe and nobody would ever know that he'd done it so I think at this point since he was pretty much on his own and the atom met anybody who he could bring into his world she wasn't gonna pull the trigger on anything that all changed when Myra Hindley walked into the break room and spotted him when Myra Hindley set her eyes on Ian Brady she said there was an immediate and fatal attraction she noticed his well manicured and clean fingernails which may seem like a small thing to us but to a girl who grew up in a town of working men who always had dirty fingernails and to her that equated somebody like her father or the boring guys that only cared about you know sitting at home and not going out dancing she saw the clean fingernails as a sign of something else the something else has she been wanting and she was even more drawn damn when he acted like she didn't exist she was an attractive young woman she at least was somebody who stood out which is what she wanted she dress in a way to make her stand out she wore her makeup in a way to make her stand out she bleached her hair blonde so she would stand out and she often got you know a good amount of male attention but not from Ian Ian pretty much didn't know she existed or at least he acted that way that night she told her friends about the dark-haired blue-eyed man she'd met at work and she made it her mission to make him hers she began keeping a diary that she would write about him in everyday what he was wearing what he did what he said what he was reading it did he look at her today did he smile at her did he not even notice that she was there oh my goodness her first step was basically to break off the engagement that she had with her current fiance who was devastated and called her at work almost every day for a year trying to get her to come back to him she would put extra time and effort into her appearance when she went into work but still Ian wouldn't even look up at her and this went on for a year a very tragic year according to Myra where she was just experiencing a whole bunch of emotional highs and lows if he was nice to her that day she would be in a good mood if he didn't even notice her she would fall into the deepest depths and pits of depression as this went on Myra began to see him as an unattainable Idol he was older and more cultured he was well dressed he was clean he read books maybe he just saw her as a little girl she began listening to him when he was on the phone and she got his address from one of these phone calls so she would make it a habit of walking by his house or in his neighborhood hoping that she would see him she even started hanging out in a bar that was by his neighborhood hoping he would go there and she could arrange an accidental meeting and that that would lead to a love connection these days we call that kind of behavior stalking but she wrote in her diary I hope he loves me and that he will marry me someday finally she figured out the way to his heart was through his mind the man was always reading and he was clearly a fan of the written so she went to the library and she checked out a book the collected works of William Wordsworth and when she saw that Ian was in the break room reading his book she got her book out and she settled herself in the break room you know like probably right in his eyesight where if he looked up she'd be right there she's probably like this you know she was like turning the pages all loud trying to get his attention like Oh Wordsworth you are a cheeky fellow you know just trying to get his attention it's the same thing like it's stalking it's creepy but kind of women we can do that stuff sometimes I think even men do that stuff like they make movies about this kind of stuff when you have a crush or you have somebody that you're interested in you should kind of figure out what they like and then become that person so that they're interested in you so that's what Myra Hindley was trying to do and it worked because men are simple creatures lovely creatures necessary to the world but you guys are kind of simple and easy when it comes to that stuff so he walked over and he was like what are you reading you know is it good she told him it was marvelous and he was like hmm I might borrow it sometime and then he went back to his book which doesn't seem like a huge you know success or a huge win for her but she was like this book thing works feeling like she was on the right path she brought to work another book Songs of Innocence and experience by William Blake she knew I don't know how probably from going through his mail or his garbage that Blake was one of the ends of favorite authors so she once again has settled herself in the break room popped it open Blake yo dawg it's so crazy Blake is crazy what William Blake was considered a a forerunner of the free Louisville movement and Brady basically came up to her and they started chatting about this book too and you know before you knew it the rest is history they actually connected for the first time for real at the company Christmas party they danced clumsily because ian is a bad dancer and Myra was drunk he walked her home he wanted to come inside but she said her grandmother was home so she didn't think it was a good idea so he basically asked her do you want to keep going with the night she said yes he told her and meet me at this bus stop leader she went inside freshened up and met him at a bus stop they continued the evening riding the bus and basically a bar hopping at the end of that he dropped her home they shared a kiss and he left at the end of December in 1961 Ian and Myra shared a real date they went to a movie they saw King of Kings with Orson Welles he was Ian's favorite actor afterwards Ian revealed to Myra what he thought about religion and how he didn't believe in it how he didn't believe in God and Myra she was still a good a church-going girl but she did find herself being swayed by Ian's way of thinking of course she did she pretty much pursued this guy for an entire year built him up in her head to celebrity status and now he's telling you I don't think God is real and I don't believe in religion what do you think about that of course she's going to find herself persuaded to his way of thinking because he's basically on such a high pedestal to her now after this they did go back to her house and that is when she claims as she lost her virginity to him in a very aggressive and violent manner Myra introduced her new boyfriend to her parents and Mira's father Bob really liked him but Mira's mother saw the same domineering and controlling personality in Ian that she saw in her own husband Myra who was still unknowingly seeking approval from her father watched happily as the two chatted and caught up as if they were old friends for the most part Ian and Myra shared a normal relationship in the beginning be able to go to movies they worked together and Ian got promoted so he was technically Mira's boss and they started sharing an office together Ian bought a motorbike and he would ride over to my wrist house wearing goggles and this long a trench coat he'd leave at a suitable hours to trick the neighbors but sneak back in her bedroom after dark and nobody was tracked everybody knew it was happening probably except Meyers grandmother myra told author Janie Jones that a pleasant sense of permanency had settled on their relationship they would go for quiet rides on his motorbike through the empty streets of Manchester in the early mornings when everyone was still asleep if it was cold or rainy they would stay in and listen to music in front of a blazing fire while they sipped wine they went to the movies they shared that love of animals spent time at the library where ian would walk straight to the true crime section and was best known for and ever saying please or thank you when he checked out books and Ian began teaching Myra all about the Nazi Party he gave her the nickname of Hesse after Rudolf höss the deputy of the Nazis they read books on how to learn German together and listened non-stop to Hitler's infernal a record that included a selection of Third Reich music and speech is given by Hitler you can buy it on Amazon for 75 bucks if anybody's interested the two of them both had their own separate aversions to society and the people in it they both felt superior to other people but together it became something so much more than just feeling superior to others they created their own little worlds where they began to refer to people as maggots and insects pretty much as it was them inside their bubble and everybody on the outside sucked and wasn't as good as they were they would search the newspapers together for anybody who had committed any acts of cruelty or violence towards animals and then they would go out together and basically destroy this person's property or even harm that person physically and this was the start this was when they started kind of going out together and committing these a smaller low-level crimes nobody died but it was still for Ian a way to introduce a Myra into his way of thinking his way of life to draw her into being the Bonnie to his Clyde the way he saw it Ian had always been a sharp dresser something that had drawn Myra to him he was not a messily put together a young man he was always dressed in classic tailored wool suits with his pant cuffs turned up in a style of a much older man and he cut a dashing figure that hid the chaos underneath Myra began to change her style as well to emulate a woman she her boy phone was attracted to her magre sir an SS guard at Auschwitz she adopted her style of short skirts high boots her heels and a leather jacket it was a darker more adult look and she would carry a picture of the female Nazi in her purse to never forget who she needed to be to keep the attention to a man she had chased for over a year others who saw the two together didn't understand the attraction that they had for each other the librarian and training at the local library that they went to thought that Myra with her short skirts and her heavy makeup looked common in fact I think she used the word tardy while Ian was the epitome of a well-bred a man and she didn't see what Ian really saw in Myra Maureen began to notice the changes in her sister Myra had once written in her journal or her diary that she hoped he would fall in love with her and marry her but now all of a sudden these ideas of domestic bliss were completely gone from her point of view Brady had completely different ideas about marriage he knew there was no way he was going to walk into a death trap of marriage and respectability and Myra seeing that this was the only way she was going to be with him went along with his counterculture ideology according to Maureen Myra had once been a girl who enjoyed being around children and was trusted by the neighbors with their children now she claimed to despise children and she also abandoned her religious beliefs in exchange for Ian's atheist ones and according to my rushiro along with Ian on more than just ideas well marriage and religion she was allegedly a virgin when she met him he took her virginity he was older than her he was more experienced than her so she let him take the lead in their behind-closed-doors activities their intimate time together progressively went from experimental to violent and depraved Myra claims that she was excited by these escapades that he awoke something inside of her she didn't know was there and even though she wasn't always on board for everything he wanted to do she went along with it to please him and to keep him happy this would become a pattern in their relationship Brady took my rest of the English Moors where they would lay together drinking wine from a bottle that had been chilled in a mountain stream and made plans together to rob a bank or a store Ian wanted to show Myra the beauty and the magic of the Moors he had always been drawn to wide-open spaces like these and what better place to become partners in crime than in the presence of such majesty Myra described these days spent on the moors languid and at peace was such a contrast to the other side of him the violent and angry side the one problem with their plan was in order to rob a store or a bank or something he had to have a getaway car neither one of them owned a car or had a driver's license so Myra had to get her driver's license and she tried and took the test and failed at three times and at this point while they're talking about you know criminal activities and being criminals and you know going out robbing something I'm not sure if she knew where this would lead eventually maybe she thought just talking about robbing a store or a bank was exciting enough to get them through and it was just something they were doing maybe they're play-acting or pretending at this point I don't know if she thought that it would turn into a physical representation of the darkest parts of the both of them the tone of their talks turned from robbery to murder when Ian gave her a book to read called compulsion compulsion was a novel written by Meyer 11 a Jewish American who wrote the story based on the real-life events of the Loeb Leopold case which took place in the 1920s two wealthy University of Chicago students kidnapped and murdered a 14 year old boy because they believed themselves to be intellectually superior and capable of committing and getting away with the perfect crime they spent seven months planning the murder and decided on their victim the second cousin of Richard Loeb Bobby Franks the police found a pair of prescription glasses near the boy's body which they eventually tracked to Nathan Leopold after Myra Reddit Ian asked her what she thought and she said it's horrible but why did you want me to read it and according to her Ian said because I want to do this I want to commit the perfect murder just like this the only difference is we won't get caught he needed her help because she was a woman and children felt more at ease with women kids parents were always telling them like don't get into a car with a stranger who's gonna give you candy but typically when they were talking about the stranger they were painting the picture of a man somebody who might try to hurt a child but a woman women who are pregnant and carry children and give birth who are mothers they would never hurt a child children would trust her and they would willingly go with them they were still going to the mort's regularly at this point but now it was in practice and preparation to carry and bury a body there Ian would tell Mayra to go completely limp so that he could practice carrying a dead body across these sometimes rocky and rough terrain of the Moors and she would do it she would let him carry her around pretending to be a dead body knowing why he wanted her to pretend to be a dead body and she says at this point he had taught her to flip a switch inside of her to just turn it off turn off her emotions a separate herself who she knew or believed she was from the actions she was about to commit she was a willing and able apprentice in June of 1963 maureen Mira's younger sister also got a job and mil words and Maureen and Myra would talk sometimes about why ian was still unable to say I love you he had never said the words I love you but Myra decided in the end that he didn't need to if any man ever showed interest in her Ian would try to knock him out so that's what really mattered you know actions speak louder than words in the next month on July 12 1963 Ian and Myra decided it was time to do what they've been planning to do for so long when they got out of work that evening they went to my wrist grandmother's house on Royal Avenue to prepare to find their victim for that night before they left Ian counted all the buttons on his clothes and Mira's clothes he wasn't gonna have any eyeglasses fiasco happening and ruining his perfect murder so he would make sure that they left with as many buttons as they went in with at that same time not far away on a wild Street 16 year-old Pauline Reed was getting ready to go to a dance Pauline was worried her parents weren't going to let her go to the dance that night because she called her friends on her way home from her job at the confectioner shop and them if they were going and they had all said they weren't going to be able to go because their parents they just recently found out that alcohol was being served at this dance which was held at the local club Pauline had been looking forward to the dance she addressed in a pink dress powder blue coat white gloves and new white shoes and was wearing a locket that her mother had let her used for the evening and even though her parents didn't want her to attend alone in the end they relented and she set out from her home a few minutes past 8 p.m. a few of Pauline's friends including her best friend pat had heard she was going to be going to the dance and they didn't believe it they didn't think that their shy and timid friend would be attending a dance alone so they ran outside to see if they could see her walk past when they did see her walk past they followed her a little bit up at Gordon Ave until they saw her turn right onto Fox nurse treats as she walked north toward Railway Street they cut through yards and took a short cut that would bring them to a kind of a hilly area that looked down on railway Street and they knew she'd have to go down that Street in order to get to the club but they did not see her pass by them on railway streets they assumed that she changed her mind about going to the dance alone turned around and gone home Ian and Myra were driving along the streets of Gordon Myra was driving a van that a neighbor had let her borrow for the evening even though she didn't have a licence and Ian was behind her on his motorbike the plan was when he spotted a child that he liked he would flash the motorbike headlight and she would stop and coax this child into the car when they turned right onto Gorton Lane Myra saw a young figure walking by herself and she slowed down but then she saw it was eight-year-old Marie Rock who actually lived right around the corner from her so she kept driving Ian pulled her over and asked why she hadn't stopped and taken girl and Myra said it was too much risk number one she lived close to her so she thought it would look suspicious and number two she thought she was too young and a young girl like that going missing would cause a lot more uproar they drove towards the railway line and when they turned onto frac summer streets they saw another figure walking alone Pauline read Myra all so new Pauline well she had gone to school with her younger sister and Maureen and they all went to the same church as Ian's head light flashed Myra took a deep breath and told herself if I can do this without conscience I can do anything Myra pulled up next to Pauline and rolled down the window and asked her if she wanted a ride and since Pauline knew my run knew her family and didn't feel there was any danger she accepted as they drove away Myra asked Pauline if there was something she could help her with first she had recently lost a glove a very special glove that had some mental value to her and would Pauline mind helping Myra look for it before she got dropped off at the dance Hindley drove in the direction of Saddleworth Moor and as she drove she recalls smelling Pauline's perfume a perfume that reminded her very vividly of her own perfume which was called saddles June I wonder what Pauline was thinking as she sat there and they drove over 13 miles so far away just to look for a glove Myra was so nervous and she was gripping the steering wheel so tightly that Pauline even asked her if she was okay once they got to the morning they got out Ian who had overtaken them was already there waiting and he said he was there to help look for the glove Myra claims that she watched Ian and Pauline walk away onto the moor and she got back into the van and she doesn't know what happened next or at least she wasn't present for it Pauline was sexually assaulted tortured and beaten and then she was killed and in sharp contrast to Myra's story Ian Brady said that Myra was there the entire time helping at one point he claims that Myra was so vicious it actually shocked him Myra ripped Pauline's mother's locket off her neck and said you will meet this where you're going Ian claims he was so angry with Myra for the comment she made that he impossibly slapped her across the face he doesn't know if it was because he overestimated his own heartlessness or if he was just angry with Myra for the compulsiveness of her statement it had always been his idea that the best way was to attack without warning and he or she was basically giving away what they had planned - he said quote it broke in absolute within me the man who had no absolutes since their stories differ so greatly we will never actually know what happened Myra also claims that she wasn't even there when Ian buried Paul Ian's body but Ian said she was she helped he said she guarded Pauline's body and looked out to make sure nobody was coming while he dug a makeshift grave and then she grabbed Pauline's legs and he grabbed the upper part of her body and they both lowered her into the hole on the ground he shoveled peat and on top of her and then Myra grabbed clumps of grass from the nearby area by their roots so that they could then stomp the grass clads onto the disturbed land so that nobody would be able to tell a hole had recently been dug there they then counted their steps back to the van so they would know exactly where Pauline had been buried so Ian could come back later and relive at the moment and take a photograph of her burial spot when Paul Ian's mother Joan woke up a little bit after midnight saw her daughter was still not home she panicked and she woke up her son Paul who was Pauline's younger brother they both went to the club where they found a few stragglers still cleaning up but nobody there had seen Pauline when they had searched the streets for hours and found nothing Joan eventually called the police around 2:30 in the morning right around this time Myra and Ian we're just finishing up what they consider to be a very tedious process of getting rid of all the forensics as Yin called them any evidence that was on them or their clothes or their vehicle that might lead them back to the scene they burned all the clothes they wore that evening and meticulously cleaned the van with a sponge and hot water they had sex and then decided to share a bottle of wine by the fire to reflect on the events of that evening they fell asleep in each others arms lulled by the alcohol and the soft flickering flames of the fire and if either of them had bad dreams or a crisis of conscience that night neither of them admitted it they both recall having a similar feeling that they were no longer part of the world and they were forever bonded together with the blood of their victim the next day they planned to go to the river or well to throw a knife in that they had used during Pauline to murder and Myra also confessed something to Ian that made him very upset she said that for half-crowns had fallen out of Pauline's pocket and she had picked them up and taken them home and she'd completely forgotten about it and this made him furious because this got in the way of his perfect crime they were going to leave nothing of themselves there and they were going to bring back with them nothing of the victims that way there was no connection between them and Pauline read Myra also had kept the locket she'd ripped off of Pauline's neck now once again we have a discrepancy here Myra says she never touched the locket Myra says she never touched that money that it was Ian who did those things either way they had to spend the money and get rid of it so they bought chocolate and cigarettes with it and they buried the locket at alt Hill then they went to the movies an orchestral piece from the soundtrack of the movie they saw the legions last patrol became the soundtrack of Pauline's death and both Myra and Ian reported that any time they heard the song after it brought them right back to that moment after they returned from the movies a quiet sort of panic had descended upon the community Pauline still hadn't returned home and this wasn't the kind of community where parents had don't worry about their kids going missing this was the kind of neighborhood that they thought that their kids could go outside when the Sun came up and not come home until the Sun came down and they would still come home every time nobody would hurt them nobody would take them the police had become involved and they were speculation that Pauline had to potentially run away with a boy anybody who knew Pauline disagreed with this wholeheartedly and said she was not that kind of girl a small article appeared in the Manchester Evening News that said girl 16 vanishes on way to Jive club eventually though and she never turned up everybody did assume the worst Pauline's brother Paul claimed to know for years he just felt like something was wrong he felt he knew she had been killed and her body had been disposed of in the Gordon area and Pauline's mother spiraled into a dark depression which she describes as just trying to live on hope she says quote i sat with my coat on for about three months waiting for daylight to come to run out and see if I could find her I was just crying and crying and thinking about what had happened in my mind she was eventually checked into the Springfield mental hospital Pauline reeds remains would not be found until 1987 24 years later the next day they got on Brady's motorbike and they rode out to Saddleworth Moor where they could finally take a picture of the gravesite and when they left Ian Brady bought Myra the record from the song of the movie that they had seen the day after they'd killed Pauline to keep as a souvenir a keepsake a remembrance of the event and from that moment on whenever either of them heard the song or hummed it to each other it would be a sort of secret they shared something that they could put out there in front of everybody but nobody else would know what it meant except for them on July 23rd 1963 Myra celebrated her 21st birthday with a present of a gold-plated watch from Ian the neighbor who had let her borrow his van that evening had actually gifted it to her for her birthday because he'd gotten a new car so she painted the inside of it white so that they would be more easily able to see a forensic evidence like blood and stuff inside and it would be easier for them to wash it off Ian took my R on a trip to Scotland he liked to bring her to Scotland often and on the way out of town Myra stopped at the police station and asked if they could keep an eye on her van for her while she was gone three weeks after Pauline's disappearance the police ran out of leads they had drained most of a nearby canal question to everyone they could find check the local businesses to see if anyone had seen her Pauline's parents were seen everyday wandering the streets looking for their daughter and when Ian and Myra got back from Scotland they received a visitor at the door a police officer but the police officer wasn't there to ask them about murders or disappearances of small girls he was there to say that he was interested in purchasing the van that Myra had asked them to keep an eye on while she was in Scotland Myra thought it was a great idea and Ian thought it was hilariously ironic especially after finding out that the officer who had given that proposition to Myra had asked her out on a date as a guise for when he would pay her for the van like oh let me bring him out on a date I can't exchange money while I'm on shift but you know let me take you out later and I'll give you the money then she actually accepted the date and the two began a sort of affair that Ian did know about at least not at first through her relationship with a married police officer Myra became interested in joining the police force and this check actually tried to join the police force she went and filled out the application Ian thought it would be a great idea to have somebody on the inside who could you know get rid of evidence if needed or find out inside information if the police had any leads and bring it back to him but when he also found out that Myra had been sleeping with a cop he put an end to her police academy dreams really quick in November of 1963 Myra joined a gun club she purchased a 45 a Smith & Wesson 38 and a target rifle Ian had been obsessed with guns for a while but because of his criminal record he was unable to purchase any they went out to the Moors together shooting the guns and snapping pictures of each other brandishing them for months had passed since Pauline's murder and they felt comfortable to start planning their next one Myra claims she wasn't on board for this one she'd done the first one to keep him happy to give him what she thought he needed and then she's like oh you want more but she ended up going along with it anyways because after all she loved him and wanted him to be happy and remain happy Ian had convinced her that all she would have to do is lure the victim into the car a younger child this time because Pauline had been stronger and fought back more than he had expected so somebody younger this time that's all she had to do and he would take over Myra who had recently passed her driver's license test actually had her license now was able to rent a white Ford to use because they had sold the van to the police officer the next day at both my rannian got into the rented car and he presented her with a new record 24 hours from Tulsa by Gene Pitney this song would become the soundtrack to their memories of their next murder which would be a young John killbride John was the oldest of seven children his parents were John and Sheila killbride he was known for walking around his neighborhood whistling or singing he had a wide gap tooth grin that would make the angriest person smile back and he was an avid movie watcher often being found at the local cinema he was a good boy who was a helping hand to his ill grandmother who nearby and he attended church services regularly and without complaint on this Saturday he had started out the day by picking up some groceries for his grandmother and then he and three of his friends who were all named a John went to the movies to see the Moghuls when the movie let out at 5:00 they wandered over to the nearby market to see if they could earn some extra money helping out the vendors when they got there they spread out and John was last seen by his friends at 5:30 Ian and Myra drove to ashton-under-lyne a town with a popular outdoor markets the market was bustling on the saturday afternoon and they felt they would be able to pick out a child without being noticed before they got out of the car Myra put on a black wake and a headscarf this was the same black weight she'd been wearing when she purchased some things from a hardware store recently before long Ian Brady had a spotted a young boy who appeared to be alone and he led Myra to the spot where John Kilbride sat on a wall eating cookies out of a bag John had just sat down to enjoy the snack when Myra approached him and commented that he was too young to be out so late by himself Ian and Myra began chatting with him telling him about their own fake children that they would be worried about if they were out alone and they offered to drop him home which he accepted he jumped down from the wall and followed them to their rented a car and they played the same game with him that they played with Pauline the glove the special glove that had you know sentimental value and would John help them find it it was really important to Myra he was a helpful boy like I already said so he agreed to do it when they got to the moor it was pretty clear that John wasn't nervous but he followed Ian out onto the moor anyways and Myra says as she watched the two of them go he looked so little compared to Ian he looked like a little lamb just being led to the slaughter once again we have two versions of the story Myra claims that she left the Moors this was a predetermined plan she parked at some parking lot right outside and waited 30 minutes before going back Ian claims she was with them the whole time and even helped to restrain Little John killbride as he was being attacked sexually assaulted and murdered Little John Cale Bryant the boy who had brought so much joy to his family and his neighbors simply with his cheerful attitude and his big smile his life was ended by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley but they buried him on the moors as well by a little Brook it would be almost two years before his body was discovered Ian and Myra went home they burned their clothes they also burned a shoe that had fallen off of Janet killbride and Ian had only noticed it once John had already been buried they wiped down the car and Myra returned it to to Warren's Auto and when it was returned to the person who took it in and said it was filthy as absolutely dirty it looked like it had been driven through ploughed field that night Ian and Myra shared three bottles of wine by the fire while John kill bride's mother set up and worried about why he had not come home yet she assumed he was still at the movies because he loved the movies and sometimes he would stay and watch another movie or even the same movie again but at 9 p.m. she checked and he was not at the cinema John's brother Danny who shared a room with him started knocking on people's doors to see if anybody had seen John and they hadn't and I mean I know this feeling so well when Eden's outside playing in the summer he's outside for hours sometimes playing with the neighborhood kids and he'll tell me he's someplace and then a dinner I go to get him and they say that he hasn't been there in hours and then I freak out and I'm like running from door to door just banging on people's doors seeing if they've seen him it's that feeling of absolute panic that has remind of running and immediately thinking the worst finally you know I find him and I hug him really tightly before yelling at him don't ever do that again but John's family Jon's parents will not have that feeling that mixed feeling of relief and anger at having felt like something happened to their son and finding out that he was safe they were left to live with the first feeling that feeling of soul gripping fear that starts in your stomach and radiates outwards until it's taken over your entire body heart in mind Sheila killbride still prepared John's dinner for him every night holding on to the same hope as Pauline Reed's mother wearing her coat for months he might come home the day before John Kilbride had disappeared JFK had been fascinated so some of the news coverage of John killbride got lost in the shuffle amongst the JFK news coverage but in john cale brights hometown a search was underway police questioned his friends who said the last time they had seen him was when he was standing by a large of salvaged bin so they checked that Salvage Minh every inch of it to see if maybe he'd accidentally fallen in or been thrown in the police even enlisted the help of psychic Annie Lansley who lived in ashton-under-lyne she reported that she saw John's resting place as somewhere down a slope with a skyline completely barren in that one tree in sight a main road on the right and quite near a stream her description of where John had been laid to rest was extremely accurate eerily accurate but when Brady was asked about this later he dismissed any psychic abilities only saying that if she had continued to get any of the other locations for the other children they would take right in the future she would find herself in a similar situation as the victims on December 6th a newspaper reported that the search for John killbride was the biggest search put together ever in that area and Myra and Ian became worried when they saw the police were using a sniffer dogs and checking in areas very near the Moors and in a very sad turn Patrick killbride at John's father became the prime suspect he was questioned and brought to the station multiple times so many times that it started to get around town that he may have been responsible for John's disappearance he got into a fight at a bar one night when someone said much of the same to him when something happens to a child it's usually a person or a person who's closest to them or close to them and in this society we often have the instinct to look to the parents but when it's not the parents we had a double dose of tragedy to an already very tragic circumstance because now John kill bride's father has deal with the fact that he lost his son and that people were actually suspicious of him being responsible for it on December 27th the paper ran a story about the kill bride's house at Christmas showing the entire family sitting around a table with one spot empty in February of 1964 Myra purchased her own car and asked Ana ven the first trip they made with the van was to the Moors with their new puppy that they called puppet this is when they proceeded to visit each of the graves John's and Pauline's and Ian took pictures of Myra and puppet sitting by the graves standing near the graves at one point Myra is actually with puppet looking directly down at the place where John Kilbride was buried and this is all captured on photographs these were trophies another way to relive the excitement that they had experienced while acting out the murders initially and they didn't hide these pictures they weren't dirty little secrets that they kept you know locked away they put them in their photo albums right along normal everyday pictures of their family and themselves at holidays and birthdays they were such important memories to Ian and Myra that they wanted them to be within an arm's reach when they were feeling nostalgic in May the month that John kill Brides should have been celebrating his 13th birthday Myra traded in her white Aston van for a station wagon that had a back seat that could be folded down for more room Sheila kilbride John's mother bought him presents wrapped them and wrote a card that said to my John all my love mom since the abductions has happened in different areas they had not yet been connected once again Myra and he--and felt like enough time had passed nobody suspected them nobody knew anything they could feel safe to start planning at their next one Ian was a killer at heart he'd tasted blood and now he was getting antsy just like somebody who is addicted to drugs E and was addicted to torture and murder and the time periods of when a murder would satisfy him for guys shorter and shorter before he needed his next fix seven months after they had ended John kill Brides life Myra accepted another present in the form of a record from Ian it was the song it's over by Roy Orbison the lyrics say golden days before they end whisper secrets to the wind your baby won't be near you anymore Ian was waiting outside when Myra pulled up in front of his a mother and stepfathers house on Westmoreland Street wearing her black wig Ian never let Myra come inside he never introduced her to his parents she'd never been inside his house he was very clear that whenever she came there or picked him up anywhere she should wait outside he got into the backseat of the car they pulled away as she waited for his signal that she could / which came very soon they hadn't even left Westmoreland Street before he was telling her to stop Keith Bennett had just celebrated his 12th birthday four days before and guys Keith Bennett has always been a hard one for me Keith reminds me so much of my son Eden he lived with his mother stepfather and five younger brothers and sisters he usually had a little shadow in the form of three year old Margaret his youngest sister she looked up to him she followed him everywhere and always wanted to be with him he was kind of small for his age he wore glasses usually but his glasses had just been broken his mother was having them fixed he loved nature and he would often go on walks where he would come home with rocks or leaves or caterpillars he loved to swim and he had just won a certificate on his birthday for swimming the full length of the pool he was very proud of it On June 16th Keith's mother was having the kids all spend the night at their grandmother's house which was on Morton Street just a few streets away from Westmoreland all the other kids had already gone there keith was the last one and his mother walked him from their house to his grandmother's house but as he was walking he spotted some kids that he knew from school so he ran ahead it wasn't that much longer before he would get to his grandmother's house and his mother was in her last month of pregnancy and she couldn't keep up with him so she just yelled after him to be careful and he looked back at her and smiled before running on this was the last time that she would see her son when Myra rolled down her window to talk to Keith Bennett she smiled sweetly and asked if he would help carry some boxes for her she needed help he looked confused when he saw Ian sitting in the back seat and Myra was like oh don't don't worry about him he's gonna help carry boxes to pretend he's not there once in the car Ian Brady told Keith the same glove story and asked him to get in the back seat with him as they drove to the MOR once again Myra claims she was not present at the actual murder she just acted as a lookout until Ian came back but Ian says all three of them walked out to the moor together Keith was starting to get nervous saying that his grandmother would be worried about him because he hadn't gotten to the house yet and according to Ian Myra calming suggestions to him that they would get him there in time and it was going to be okay they walked over to shiny Brook a stream that ran parallel with the road and they began to follow the riverbed and when they got to their destination Ian began to whistle when you wish upon a star which was his sign tamyra that she should now overtake the boy or attack him this time Ian had his camera with him pictures of the gravesites we're not holding his interest anymore and he snapped a picture of Keith Bennett's Abbate before he put him into the ground after he buried Keith he placed a large rock on the grave in order to mark it like a headstone Ian said when Ian was asked where Mayra was when the murder happened he said a yard away from me I couldn't keep her away she enjoyed it afterwards they went through the motions of burning their clothes even their shoes this time as they didn't want any shell from the moor to be stuck or found on their shoes but this was the first night after a murder that they didn't spend the evening of snuggling up next to the fire and drinking they both went back to their respective homes and didn't see each other until the next day at work because of the circumstances at Keith's absence was not missed at his grandmother's house she assumed that he had just decided to stay home and Keith's mother assumed that he'd gotten to his grandmother's safely neither of them had phones neither of them checked to see if he was still at his mother tells her if he'd gone to his grandmother's house so nobody found out he was missing until the next morning when Keith's grandmother walked to the other kids home and Keith's mother said where's Keith sorry I keep calling her Keith's mother but Keith's mother's name was Winnie Bennett's so Wendy Bennett asked where keith was and why she found out that he'd never made it to his grandmother's home she panicked she checked his school she checked the local clinic where she thought he might have gone to maybe have his glasses fixed or because his eyesight was bothering him Keith's stepfather Jimmy Johnson was also considered the main suspect even though he and Keith had a very good relationship and Keith called him dad when he was quoted as to having told the police do you think I could have stayed with my husband if I thought he had anything to do with Keith you're splitting my family up because if that happens you'll have my death and the death of four kitties on your conscience because I'll kill myself and take them with me okay the police took up the floorboards in the family home and they realized that basically all the houses on that row shared the same underground of floor space so they checked all of that they checked the grounds they checked a senior home facility that basically backed up to the Bennett's garden but obviously they found nothing rumors began to circulate that Keith had run away or that his body was found in the river and each of these new leads led to nothing Keith's grandmother never forgave herself and blamed herself for the rest of her life for the fact the key that gone missing and what had happened to him she never forgot it and she never let herself off the hook for it Keith's little sisters especially Margaret who missed him so much she kept asking once Keith's coming home once Keith's coming home they didn't understand the Keith was gone in winnie Bennett actually struck up a relationship and a friendship with Sheila killbride even though they didn't live very close to each other they still kept in contact bonding over their shared experience of losing a son even though they hadn't connected the cases even though they didn't think that they were done by the same person they still found each other and shared a relationship based on that commonality nobody knew what a commonality it really was though I'm gonna end a part one here I hope you guys are on this journey with me I know it's an upsetting case I know it's hard to hear I know it's hard to think about these children's lives were lost senselessly and it's important to talk about it's important to remember them and keep them alive and to remember that evil exists in this world and sometimes it doesn't look like you think it might I will see you guys very soon stay kind and stay beautiful love you bye [Music] to
