Family Drive In - Avengers: Infinity War

if you're like me and you love a good hero movie you are pumped up for this week why Avengers infinity Wars came out and this is the one we've all been looking forward to why because all the heroes are coming together all those Marvel heroes you love so whether it's Iron Man Hulk Thor Captain America Black Panther Black Widow you name it but they're all there guardians of the galaxy so that means all those great stars as well Robert Downey junior Scarlett Johansson Chris Evans Chris Hemsworth Chris Pratt this is gonna be a great movie now this time all the Marvel heroes have to work together using all their superpowers why the bad guy he is really big and bad as Stannis so they got to put their differences aside and work as one and just maybe they'll win the day now what does this have to do with the spiritual life or church well at first glance it doesn't seem like much no because churches like our church you know our church is not made up of a bunch of superheroes work we're ordinary people in fact we quickly aknowledge we're highly imperfect people but we've been called by a perfect Savior an extraordinary God who uses ordinary people in amazing ways in fact here is a thought one of the benefits of your salvation along with heaven and forgiveness is this that God gives every single believer at least one spiritual gift the moment you are saved a spiritual gift is a god-given ability or special aptitude to be used for the purpose of blessing other people now think about that if we all come together as one putting aside our differences our impact could be heroic hey this is going to be fun today welcome to church by The Glades family driving our movie today Avengers infinity war oh yeah please give it up for our video and tech team man they're so good here guess welcome my name is David I'm one of the pastor's here at church by the glades we do traffic in parables that is a genre or communication technique that Jesus utilized all the time he would start where his audience where they lived he would deal with culturally relevant things for Jesus shepherds and sheep and farmers and fields for us you know pop culture music or maybe movies got a lot of movie fans at church by the glades and those hero movies are a ton of fun so Jesus would begin the conversation where the hearer was been in land with spiritual truth that's exactly what we endeavor to do so I'm so glad you're here today the movie it for for this week of course is Avengers I love a good hero movie and I want to deal with some issues of doctrine some deep theological questions begin our conversation so here's theological question number one who has the best heroes DC or Marvel DC or marvel answer out loud who do you think DC or marvel who is the best heroes oh wow anybody think DC anybody I don't care about hero movies at all fuel also gets good not many of those not many before 2008 probably most people would have said DC why cuz DC had the two Biggie's had Superman and had Batman and for just generations they were like the big famed popular heroes where'd he go back to Chris Reeves or Michael Keaton or before that comic books they were the big ones but in 2008 Marvel released Iron Man the first I think it now 19 Marvel superhero movies has been a monstrous franchise and they've kind of captured the imagination of the American audience doing such a great job taking their comic book heroes some from the 60s or even 40s and bringing them to life and so and most of the superheroes of course have superpowers they have superpowers there's a flash is super fast and Aquaman swims fast and talks to fishes and Superman could do like almost everything except a little susceptibility to kryptonite but there are a few of the superheroes who do not have super powers yeah they have technology built into their super suits and that's what makes them extraordinary so I got a question for you is it the guy or is it the gear is the guy or is it the gear I'll name the hero and you tell me does he or she have a superpower is it a guy or is it the gear like ant-man ant-man is the guy or the gear yeah it's the gear I don't think he has any superpowers and by the way when that movie came out I thought oh this will be so stupid ant-man bug boy but actually there's a lot of fun very humorous Paul Rudd did a great job with ant-man but yeah ant-man is it's the suit he has no inherent physical superpowers alright how about this one Black Panther is that the guy or is the gear I'm here too little bit of both I think technically speaking and by the way I put this on my social media because I'm you guys you are awesome geeks man you are nerds you know your superhero stuff and technically yes he does have an incredible suit black panther has the students inter woven with vibranium his claws are vibranium that super strong metal but also when he became the king aka Black Panther he ate if you recall in the movie that heart-shaped herb it enhanced his physical power so he has both or here's one the guy or the gear Batman Batman Batman ghayra gear yes the gear in fact if you saw Justice League pretty good DC movie Justice League on like at one point flash asked him what's your superpower he says I'm rich that's a superpower that's a pretty good superpower and then finally finally Marvel's Iron Man Tony Stark does he have superpowers is that the guy or the gear it is the gear he's super intelligent super charismatic and he creates the the technology of the suit but he has no superpower now they have gear I mentioned the video but God gives every believer something called a spiritual gift if you are a saved person the nanosecond you gave your heart to Christ yes god bless you with forgiveness and acceptance and the promise of heaven but God also by way the holy spirit gave you something called a spiritual gift a God designed ability or aptitude he placed within you now maybe for you undiscovered still undeveloped a lot of you have way more than one spiritual gift but the purpose of this is not you know for your own embellishment is to bring encouragement to other people and I originally thought a couple you I've talked about spiritual gifts but I thought you know actually now I want to talk about not just the gifts I won't talk about the gear because God has also given every believer a supersuit spiritual gear if you will why because for the Christian this world is both beautiful and broken sometimes you walk through life you recognize it's a spiritually dangerous environment but God has not left you unprotected you have a spiritual supersuit I know this seems like too good to be true but check it out Ephesians chapter 6 everyone in the car is turn to Ephesians chapter 6 by the way nice nice ride right here like Ephesians chapter 6 and all of our six campuses let's say this text together loudly ready Ephesians chapter good job if you forgot your Bible don't have the Bible on your smartphone yet go ahead and check out the big screen it's gonna be great this week next week Beauty and the Beast Anthony Evans in the house at this campus if you've not heard Anthony yet leading worship the guy is amazing and one of our favorite people to ever bring in so don't miss next week and then the final week Mother's Day and moms you do have that superpower it's hard to say no to an invite from mom on Mother's Day if you ask those dudes now don't wait till the Friday before ask them now get them to commit now I know it's like leveraging a little bit of maternal guilt go for it your pastors this is okay right use that charm and influence but get those men here well make sure it's a lot of fun for you and them but Ephesians chapter 6 and it begins in verse 10 almost with the language of a superhero movie look what it says I've highlighted a couple words on the screen every campus says finally be louder finally be be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power oh so good turn to your neighbor and just say that to them be strong and the Lord turn your neighbor like a hero charge be strong and the Lord and in his mighty power is so rich right there and then Paul continues a conversation and is framed in the language of conflict in the vernacular of a battlefield look what he says here about this the super suit that God's given us verse 11 on the screen every campus it says put on the full the armor of God so you can take your stand against the devil schemes for our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers against the authorities against the powers of this dark world against the spiritual forces of evil it's a good versus evil battle were engaged in in the heavenly realms therefore put on the full full armor of God so though in the day if evil comes you'll be able to stand your ground after you done everything to stand verse 14 I love this stand firm men with the belt of truth buckled around your waist with the breastplate of righteousness in place verse 15 with your feet fitted with the readiness right it's not highlighted but shout the word readiness ready one two three readiness always prepare with this stuff that these shoes that comes with the gospel of peace in addition to all this take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God and we'll leave the rest the chapter of you to read this week but it's epic and it's heroic and what Paul is doing here is being listen creative it's a parable and we believe he wrote this letter from prison it's called a prison letter a prison epistle we're not exactly sure where our best guest says he was in Rome and in Rome when he was in prison the Bible gives a detail that he's chained up to a Roman guard 24/7 just make sure he didn't get away or something now why did Paul go to prison he not committed crime in fact his crime was actually sharing the gospel it was his planning Church as being a missionary that was illegal in the Roman Empire so he's being persecuted for his faith he's chained up this guard was scholars believe was as he's trying to explain how God has not left us defenseless in this fiercely dangerous world he looked over the guard this Roman guard and looked at armored look at all the typical things that roaming guard would wear it on his body to protect him some thought you know this makes an apt illustration for the invisible armor Pam that God has given us and so he can he goes by piece by piece I wouldn't spend the rest or time just quickly surveying the armor of God and it makes sure it's relevant has anybody been chained up to a Roman guard this week nobody okay other things that may be more relevant more current Iron Man Iron Man Iron Man has like that suit of armor right that incredible super suit that technology it protects them from the attacks of the bad guys so put Iron Man guys on the screen Iron Man on the screen and we'll use Iron Man as our illustration because it says in this text we have these items of armor that God has given us like in verse 14 it says we have the breastplate of righteousness breastplate of righteousness now in the ancient world a Roman soldier or gladiator or any warrior would try to cover their torso is something protective a breastplate now sometimes it was made of metal if you were an officer you know if you had cloud or means but for the typical soldier thick leather or sometimes people would do things very innovative like they would they would take the hooves of animals and slice them and kind of weave those together to protect themselves from the assault of a spear or sword javelin and so but the breastplate protects your internal organs it protects your heart and the Bible says our breastplate it's not metal or leather it's is righteousness now righteousness is a big theme in the Bible and righteousness is described two ways Bible scholars there is declared righteousness and then what I will call a practical righteousness let me start with declared righteousness one of the cool things that happens in your life the moment you are saved if you're not saved guess what easy at the end of the service come to the stage your campus they'll be prayer partners there and they'll tell you like 10 15 minutes show you some promises and God's Word and you can make a decision you can pray a remarkable prayer and be saved today and the moment that happens again all you clap for that there's a brilliant move and by the way if you think you're not ready you're more ready than you know and this could be your heroic and epic day to make that great decision anyways if and when you do heaven is yours in moments and forgiveness is yours in that moment and you're accepted into God's family and you do get the Holy Spirit in that moment and you do get you know a spiritual gift or maybe more than one in that moment but also you receive the armor of God and part of the armor is its righteousness and God in that moment that you're safe declares you as a righteous person there's somebody when you hear that you're like no no no no no righteous so David David I'm a screw-up I got so much baggage I got these habits these addictions I'd forgiven maybe but righteous no God declares you righteous because the Bible teaches the moment that we're saved God no one who really sees us he sees Jesus in us we'll be in second Corinthians chapter five next week I can't wait for next week again if you don't do hero movies next week's Beauty and the Beast be all cute and stuff but there's a powerful passage in 2nd Corinthians chapter 5 I want to drill down on with you it's so good but there's a verse I won't be covering then I want to touch on now and verse 21 it says this it says God made him who knew no sin Jesus perfect Simmonds God made him who knew no sin to become sin that we might become the righteousness of God the Bible saying here's what happened at Calvary there was a divine exchange and God laid on Jesus the sin of the world he shouldered our sin and the moment you accept Christ as a free gift God transfers to you the righteousness of Jesus in that moment God declares you now then and forever as righteous as ready for a relationship with him again for more reading checkout of fusions chapter 1 Christians were declared holy and blameless that's the way God sees us and that is the reality but that's the declaration that's not our experience yet you see because then righteousness takes another form I will call practical righteousness means this I start to try to align my life with the proclamation of God okay God if you see me as righteous not out of guilt or fear love and gratitude I run try to live that way I want to eradicate sin from my life and align my life with the Word of God again I want it's a process but practically speaking I want my life to kind of look what God had looked like what God has said about me I want to live a life that is righteous and here's one of the cool things if I live a righteous life it is the breastplate it protects see said because your righteousness it's like keeping like rules and regulations with a shell so it sounds like a drag no no keeps you safe it's an investment in you because it's the breastplate protects your heart and let me use a synonym for righteousness integrity integrity man that's a great way to live because it takes the pressure off if I live a life of integrity you're practically speaking every day live I don't mean perfection we never get that but I really am endeavoring to be as someone who lives a life of honesty and integrity that protects my relationships that protects my marriage that protects my reputation that might protect my health am i protecting my life protects me professionally oh my gosh it is see God is looking out for us and it protects us God wants to keep you safe it's not about keeping the rules is about keeping you safe because you're a person of heroic destiny the breastplate of righteousness okay I got to move on quickly and then it says the next verse we've got some shoes we got some shoes we got some gospel shoes gospel shoes anybody hear just it yes all praise to Jesus and humility you got good shoe game raise your hand you have good shoe game do you value oh yeah good if you ever like my shoes that's not me it's Lisa's picked out my shoes I don't have any shoe game at all right I'm always confused about what do I like to pick out a shirt and stuff but shoes throw me but we have good shoe game as Christians we have these gospel shoes Lucas says verse 15 is on the screen at every campus read with me and with your feet God even cares about your feet your feet fitted with the readiness readiness that comes from the gospel the gospel of peace Gosselaar you hear in churches where gospel my church is a gospel Church my pastor preaches that gospel at our church we're a gospel church a gospel what does that mean okay it's an archaic English word that means simply good spell or better translation good news so yeah our church is a gospel aka good news church now now to this gospel of peace though there is there's balance the same way if you have two feet hopefully you have two shoes and there's balance in that right so there should be some spiritual symmetry in our gospel because if you got just like one she was weird ever go to the store you know you wanna buy some new shoes and they the shoe person comes out and they they have you try on just the right size then you try on like one shoe then you have just one shoe on and they say take a walk see how it feels you're like feels weird because you just gave me one shoe right does you need both shoes for it to feel right okay there are two sides two sides they move my stairs man I'm gonna fall excuse me for a moment I'm on the tech team all right here we go there are two sides to the gospel there two shoes there's um there's good news and there's bad news for a church to be biblically balanced when they present the gospel you need both dimensions two sides all right so there's bad news there is some bad news in your Bible if you've not noticed some bad news you've not read your Bible like bad knows is this we got a mess on our hands we have a major issue without Jesus it says in Romans chapter 3 verse 23 on the screen for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God turn to your nice neighbors say all that means you it means you are you nice people in the car it means you'd means you bro means all of we fall short and the Bible teaches in Romans chapter 6 that the wage of our sin is death and the Bible continues to teach we've got no ability to save ourselves so be summarized we've all sinned and we all deserve hell and we're hopeless that's bad news right but the bad news is in the Bible to put the good news is proper perspective and the Bible is not a bad news story it's a good news story and the good news shows up in great places like Romans 5 verse 8 but God's image demonstrate his own love for us in this while we were still sinners Christ died for us let's put your hands because that's good news and the church the church needs to share both the alum both those sides to be effective right you need to have balance like if you grow up in a church and the preacher does yelled at you all the time you sorry sinners just judge you all the time and condemned you you're in a bad news church you need both by the way nice shirt I was noticing your shirt look at how good you look they're so awesome you stand up show shirt that's that's phenomenal it's you look good oh yeah was I talking about oh yeah bad news Church bad news Church but but there should be both now if you went to a church and they present God is just like a giant Santa Claus it gives out candy to babies all the time and there's no issue of sin or holiness you're not getting the full gospel you want both it's not balance the good news is way weightier than the bad news but the bad news helps us appreciate how good the good news is and quickly I gotta wrap this up because I'm walking around having way too much fun today Missy but um but like you know shoes shoes are like you travel in your shoes right you move in your shoes like what's the first thing you do when you go home kick off your shoes why cuz you ain't going anywhere but no you want to go somewhere you put on shoes so the Bible says readiness readiness so we should think ready as we journey ready to share this gospel people ready to you know share a word of witness encouragement so you know to pray with them to at least meant invite cards invite cards cuz that David I don't know how to share the gospel someone guess what I do you just get them here you have issues sharing the gospel I have no such issues you get them in some you aren't clapping your the people need to grab cards and be ready to have AI people next week Church by the glaze all right so we got shoes we got shoes we also we have besides she is we have keep working through the text we're gonna cover next Oh a helmet we got a helmet it's that next one guys now yes that helmet of salvation quickly this protects you know your helmets whether it's in sports or something so important because inside your skull is what you write your brain so you need a helmet in warfare helmet in sports so you don't get a concussion we have a lot of Christians going through concussion protocol because they don't wear their spiritual helmet meaning this you understand that transformation begins with your thoughts and you've not surrendered the throne of your thoughts to Jesus you think that Jesus just cares about external behaviors and outward things no it begins with the thought life Romans chapter 12 verse 2 but b/e changed or transformed by the renewing of your mind I think it's crazy some Christians don't think about what they think about I think I think you should think about what you think about because all that turmoil in that battle in your life that chaos that conflict it's not a lot here it starts in here and in here because you know you're giving in to anger and bitter and jealousy and greed those are all emotions or thoughts those are internal things that's why pornography is so bad because again thought life checks you up I think you should think about what you think about helmet of salvation what's next was next second I got man's armor so I wish had more time is such a great pass if you're gonna read it and reread it and meditate on it and think about this week and I huh Oh shield shield shield now Ironman didn't have a shield which hero has the shield which hero my favorite one Captain America I love me some Captain America you have a favorite superhero when I say three off camp is a shout out the name of your favorite superhero ready one two three yeah me too I love that guy he's awesome she's phenomenal but the Captain America is my absolute favorite I think I love the way Chris Evans plays him because he's just noble he's such a good guy he has no guile his motives are so pure and and and his his weapon is a shield with the Bible says we have a Shield of things we have a shield of faith I wish I had time because they're like five different Greek words for shield but show up in literature and in the scripture why because a shield was a part of everyday combat back then st. all different sizes and shapes and functions same way we have different words for cars we don't just go everything of Karluk that's a hot rod and that's a convertible and that's just I'm jealous of that one that's awesome is right SUV's compacts all these different words for cars they'd only different words for shields now the shield described here is that big rectangular one that will protect your entire body but I don't know of a superhero that has that but Captain America does have a shield and cap was nice enough to swing by church today and loan me his shield and I was kind of ironic that Captain America's shield is designed the way it is because you ever notice his shield also looks like what a bull's-eye and that kind of give it a target to the bad guys that make me easier to hit but you know in the Bible it says we have a shield of faith stay with me a shield of faith if you cross-reference Hebrews 11 verse 6 it says without faith it's impossible to please God so the commodity of Christian character that God is looking for the police is him is faith so what I think understanding that passage is what builds into your life a bull's-eye for blessing is faith is faith it's yes what we do is vital but it's simply believing what God has said to be truth renders his target in your life this bullseye for blessing this bullseye for God's favor you just believe simple things about God like this that God loves you that God wants to engage in your life that God is a generous God a good God a forgiving God that he's rendered your sins as far as the East is from the West when you believe those things it kind of builds this beautiful target in your life for the blessing of God and of course also it protects you faith protects us we recognize the lies of the enemy carry no weight because we walk in the power of the promises of God the shield of faith is so vital I'll get this back to Captain America a little later I don't think his is made of plastic is the vibranium it anyways anyways I've got a shield of faith at a shield of faith and then let's see there's um others of sword there's a sword Captain America doesn't have a sword Iron Man knows sword Thor Wonder Woman that's right Wonder Woman was rocking the sword that was a good DC movie in my opinion Wonder Woman may show up on Mother's Day just saying perhaps Wonder Woman might show up on Mother's Day and she has a sword now the Bible says we have a sword of the Spirit which is the word of God and this is kind of cool for me because the only offensive weapon we have is the sword battle you don't take off your helmet throw it at somebody take off a shoe try to beat him to death right but a sword if you can use a sword and the Greek word here they had a word for a big broadsword like a big ol Braveheart sword that's not the word it's the smaller sword that Mac IRA that calls for skill as you apply it and use it you have to have precision with this one and the sword is the Bible's the Word of God and the devil trembles at the Word of God when a Christian knows it and is skilled with it that's why church is so vital because we're helping you download Scripture that's why spending time in the Bible on your own is so pivotal you're learning how to use that sword Matthew chapter 4 when Jesus was tempted by the devil face-to-face three temptations all three times Jesus responds by quoting scripture why he didn't have to because he was Jesus he's the king of kings he says hey devil out of here in my name he bolted but he used scripture I believe clearly as an example for us when I'm tempted or trouble with the double I can't say double begone in David's name he's like you know right but you know what I know the Word of God what I've memorized scripture that relates to the areas I battled I'm tempted it's a powerful weapon man this is a good passage I wish I had more time in this passage so much fun who will spend more time and second Corinthians chapter 5 the power of change and transformation buting the beast next week please don't miss it bring someone dress up a little girls and I'm out of time l got one piece of armor left it sounds pretty unnie citing just truth be told you think about because it's the belt after all these cool things I got a shield and a helmet and his sword and I got a belt I got a belt it's the belt of truth the belt of truth it seems a little bit underwhelming got a belt is kind of lame until you think what kind of belt it is it's it's a belt of truth Batman always had like the utility belt especially old school like Adam West's Batman you know these cool gadgets on his utility belt all right the belt of truth now truth though though the belts not a very exciting thing truth is very exciting because truth is very powerful why because the main weapon the enemy wields is deceit the devil is never telling you the truth no matter how many people buy his stuff is not no matter how culturally accepted or popular is man he's never telling you the truth his agenda is singular to mess you up do you and murder and destroy all right so he's lying to you and the best antidote the best defense for a lie is the truth a lie is powerless against biblical truth and so it's your belt it's your belt I know the belts not as a belt could it be like the javelin of truth the bazooka truth the Hand Grenade of honesty or I can't it be a belt truth but if you don't appreciate the belt no one tells me you didn't grow up old-school in the south [Applause] beep well makes my mad here but listen listen just just for my experience my dad who's been in heaven now for years I miss my dad every day my dad was a great dad and a kind dad a very involved father and led his family to church and I learned so much at the feet of my dad but my dad believed in discipline and boundaries and my dad believed in what he would deem rare and appropriate use of corporal punishment now listen if you if you clapping beat those kids Lisa and I are not spankers we're not very big spankers at all so you know it's difference in direction but dad anyway was really rare I mean it had to be for what he thought was like rebellion right I didn't get spanked for just a bit rebellion it's like two or three times man he took me the garage and his his tool of loving discipline of choice was the belt and it left such an impression on me that after that he had to like spank me he'd just say son don't make me get my belt I'd snap - oh my gosh look what was it sorry dad what it was that don't make me get my belt that we have a belt of truth so in the double comes after you just get out your belt right when he he tries to go upside your head with a lie and you come upside his with the truth because the devil will continue to seek to deceive you as long as the deceptions are effective so when a double comes here something weak like you know hey you'll never be successful you have no experience you have no talent that you're unspecial you can't do that you are doomed to fail wait a minute devil my Bible says my Bible says I can do all things through Christ who is my strength hey Satan don't make me get my belt when the devil says but I own in this realm I'm the Prince of the power of the air on the Prince of this world you're outnumbered you're outgunned oh no my Bible says if God is for me who can dare stand against me don't make me get my belt you are doomed to fail you will never succeed I have more I'm a spiritual being you're made of flesh and blood but my Bible says in all these things we're overwhelming Congress who Christ who loved us don't make me get my belt you've been addicted so long you're a slave to this habit but slave my King says when the Sun has set you free don't make me get my belt when he lobs Ally go upside his head with the truth when the devil says look at the mistakes and the sin in your past when he reminds you of your past you remind him of his future he's gonna spend forever roasting in a lake of fire hey devil don't make me get my belt the Bible says I'm an armour wearing its weapon wildung chosen empowered called son of the Most High God you can't mess with me if you try I get my belts look at you you're chosen and you got a super suit you're the guy and you have the gear so live a life that is nothing short of heroic make your impact epic count in Jesus name father God I pray over a small army of heroes we live our lives on points on mission believing it in the Great Commission and call of our king there's someone today one of our campus is gonna give himself by faith to Jesus and be forever forgiven qualified for heaven and saved empowered with spiritual gifts and protected by the full armor of God we stand in the power of God in the streets of God and walk in his mind we declare this in Jesus name as a church says together amen [Music]
