hey how's it going guys it's Nate here and welcome back to another fallout investigative video and let me just start off by saying that this one is a bit of a doozy what I want to explore today is a strange Lovecraftian entity that's been appearing in the Fallout franchise since its third installment some people call this creature of Oakwell thoth others refer to it as the Dunwich monster and more recently the term the interloper has been thrown around we don't really know what this entity is whether it's a god or some sort of giant creature or some kind of alien heck we don't even have a good idea of what it looks like but it's clear that it exists that it's very powerful and that it may be a lot more important than anyone ever thought if all of this sounds new to you or you're not exactly sure what I'm talking about don't worry that's how you should feel Bethesda's intentionally made this little subplot very mysterious and quite hard to follow likewise people have been watching videos like this for a while probably already have a very good idea of what I'm discussing you see every Fallout game since part 3 including fallout 4 and even fallout shelter and fallout 76 have contained strong yet very subtle and vague references to this specific being at first these references seem to be a little more than mere easter eggs by the developers may just to scare players with no real narrative significance however when you start to piece all of these references together and dissect some of the franchise's cut content a more cohesive picture can be revealed and it becomes undeniably obvious that this creature or god or whatever you want to call it is definitely real and it's definitely impacting the events of the world and depending on how far you want to read into it it may even be behind the Great War itself in today's video I'd like to connect all of those dots across the games and cut content for you share a few of the discoveries I made along the way which I don't think anyone else has and in the end I don't exactly want a promise we're going to solve this mystery but we're gonna get pretty darn close so without further ado let's ask and get very close to answering the question what on earth is the Dunwich monster now I spent quite a while trying to decide how I wanted to structure this video and where I thought we should begin again we're gonna be looking through and trying to connect references to some weird entities across four different Fallout games ultimately I think the best place to start our story is by analyzing what fallout 4 tells us about the creature because this game provides us with some necessary and helpful context that's gonna make investigating the other games way easier so let's put on our tinfoil hats and head on over to done which boards a large mining quarry located in the northeastern region of the map the location is currently controlled by a Raider gang who call themselves the Forge death and are based out of Saugus ironworks the Raiders here are apparently using the old quarry to extract various metals and resources from the earth and then they send those materials back to the Saugus plant where they melt them down and temper them into various pieces of weaponry and armor honestly it's an impressively complex operation for some Raiders no matter it's got one big flaw as we enter the mine ourselves and begin to fight through its depths the Raiders here seem a little bit odd their dialogue is weird and we get the vibe they're a little crazy norris terminals left behind by the original builders of this place can be discovered and they tell or suggest a frightening tale you see dunwich borers was never actually the name of this query it's actually the name of the company that started it Dunwich borers LLC before the bombs fell this firm specialized in all things from making and selling industrial tunneling equipment to evidently building mines themselves they did it all and here's the kicker Dunwich borers which we now know is both this locations name on the map and the company's name is a clear nod to the short story the Dunwich horror written by howard phillips or HP Lovecraft allow me to go on a brief tangent and talk a bit about HP because he's going to be quite important throughout this video I promise we'll get back to the mind in a second Lovecraft was a writer in the early 1900's who authored numerous horror stories but the thing about Lovecraft's take on horror was that he abandoned the traditional werewolf and vampire tales that were popular during his time instead his works were dominated by strange dark all-powerful and oftentimes even extraterrestrial gods and creatures who typically boasted absolutely disgusting almost squid-like and fishy appearances the most popular of these characters was undeniably Cthulhu who you've probably heard of before but there were a lot more and many were secretly worshiped by small cults on earth operating in secret hmm another common theme in his books and pamphlets was the idea that earth used to be inhabited by an ancient Society of aliens yeah he did it before the History Channel since his heyday in the early 1900s many other writers adopted similar styles and now we just call the entire genre Lovecraftian in his name anyway now that we've got a good idea of who this Lovecraft fellow was and have identified an obvious connection between him and the name Dunwich borers let's go back to examining the quarry itself and what we can find as we enter executive terminals reveal that the corporation was never actually using this mined to dig up resources or anything what they were really trying to do was dig something which they called the it up and done which simply pretended this place was a quarry to deceive the public and its employees so that explains this organization they're not really interested in mining metals or stone or anything like that it's merely a convenient excuse that lets them dig for something more ambiguous and probably less popular as we start going deeper and deeper into this mine things get weirder and weirder a loud rumbling almost like footsteps shakes this place every few moments and while the occupying Raiders don't offer much unique dialogue their Diaries imply they've all gone totally mad Raiders report watching their peers randomly break down weeping and start whispering to themselves in the fetal position entire team sent down to unexplored areas of the mind to clear out ghouls have disappeared and even the Raider boss in charge of the whole operation has lost her marbles as we continue to descend it just becomes more obvious that larger supernatural forces are at play the rumbling gets louder we start to have flashbacks to the place in a pre-war State and Raiders begin to get replaced by ghouls everything comes together sort of as we come to the end of the dungeon we're before entering a crudely dug out chamber a final flashback occurs depicting a weird cult-like ritual possibly with the captive audience and human sacrifice when the flashback includes a large flooded tunnel emerges a tunnel that we can swim down to to find an underwater chamber with many submerged old marble structures and two mini nukes and the unique blade chrimbus tooth sitting on top of a podium I guess this is a reward for making it to the end of the dungeon oh yeah and one more thing if you look at the bottom of the tunnel you'll see a giant metallic eye staring back at you okay now you've seen everything in this place all right so what in Adams name did we just experience crazy Raiders hypnotic visions mythical blades it's a lot to take in it seems before the bombs fell when the world still spun the Dunwich company was being drawn by something supernatural to mine in this specific location and dig up something deep below ground along the way ignoring safety standards and committing human sacrifices regardless I'd like to turn your attention to the giant eye that we see staring back at us as this is certainly related to whatever it was done which was trying to excavate and it has sparked a spirited debate within the Fallout community you see by using console commands and no clipping through terrain to get a full view or just popping into the game's files we can discover that the metallic eye is really a part of a much larger metallic bust of a head that remains mostly buried the thing is the exact same model and texture used for this bust appears on pre-war architecture across the wasteland like we can find the same damn thing on various buildings all around not only fallout 4 cities but even in Fallout 3's and 76s so what's the deal how did one of these metallic heads that were evidently a staple of pre-war architecture find itself so far underground I mean do developers really intend to imply that there is a connection between this weird Dunwich entity and such a random piece of artwork we so commonly see no way well most people seem to write this off as Bethesda just reusing assets and that there's no real connection between the AI we see and dunwich borers and the metallic heads we see across the wasteland maybe Bethesda just wanted to have an ominous I stare back at the player when we reach the bottom of that hole and rather than design an entire new model and texture they just opted to reuse one they already had and didn't mean anything by it this is the theory that appears to be the most prevalent and accepted within the community and it's what I personally believe for a while problem is it's just not true Bethesda definitely put that specific head there on purpose and there is definitely a connection between the Dunwich monster and every single one of these heads here is how we know meet Lorenzo Cabot quite possibly fallout 4 is a most interesting character he's an elderly man wearing a crown of sorts locked away by his family in the Parsons State insane asylum what makes Lorenzo so remarkable or well part of what makes Lorenzo so remarkable is the fact that he's actually around 400 years old having been born sometime around the Year 1835 ad well weird at face value it nothing necessarily initially links him to the Dunwich creature and I don't think many players suspect as such but well just keep watching as we learned during the events of the Cabot quests Lorenzo was allegedly a sort of archaeologist back in the 19th century and one day he went on a dig in the rub al-khali desert in southern Arabia where he discovered the ruins of an ancient city buried underneath the sand but this was no ordinary ruin the settlement predated the existence of humanity itself Lorenzo and his family believed that the city he discovered buried was really built by some sort of alien like ancient species well well in this ruin the man discovered a crown the very same crown we see him wearing when we meet him in the game and as soon as he put it on it changed everything about Lorenzo he was unable to take it off and the crown told him to Ribery the place he just dug up and never ever reveal its location don't worry I'm gonna get those metallic busts I haven't forgot about them just hang in here when Lorenzo eventually returned to his home in Boston the crown caused him to develop telepathy he could now move objects with his mind to not only that he gained godlike intelligence and stopped aging sadly he also started to go a bit nuts and began murdering people allegedly this resulted in his family having him committed to the parson state insane asylum sometime before the year 1900 and Lorenzo son a scientist named Jack began experimenting on his imprisoned father Jax Cole was ultimately to fix his dad's mental state and bring him back to normal though he would never succeed however Jack did learn how to use Lorenzo's blood to create a serum that would completely remove the effects of aging fast-forward 400 years to the present day and Lorenzo still locked up in his cell meanwhile his son Jack and a few of his closest family members are still living in downtown Boston yeah they're all 3 to 400 years old to the Cabot house questline will ultimately come to a climax when Lorenzo telepathically summons a gang of Raiders to break him out of the asylum and his son desperately attempts to prevent the escape keep in mind Lorenzo is genuinely bananas his son has very valid reasons for not wanting to let his father out ultimately it will be up to us whether we decide to free Lorenzo and kill his son or instead kill Lorenzo to stop him from being unleashed on the outside world and saving his son there's no middle ground we can't just keep him imprisoned or anything someone needs to die regardless that is the tale of the cabbage family okay Nate so what does all of this have to do with the Dunwich monster we just discussed and more specifically what does it have to do with the metal bust I mentioned it so specifically earlier well for starters the tale of the lost city beneath the deserts of Arabia were told by Lorenzo and his family where he allegedly found the crown is almost a carbon a copy of HP Lovecraft's short story the nameless city published in 1921 the nameless city was all about an explorer who discovered a city buried beneath the sands of the rub al-khali desert in southern Arabia and in the story the city was really if millions of years old and allegedly once inhabited by aliens too you can see the connections there clear as day but that's only one reference here is where Lorenzo's tale gets really interesting fallout shelter online is essentially a Chinese only online version of the fallout shelter game and it features a system where players can collect cards with fallout four characters on them this is what Lorenzo Cabot's card looks like look at what's behind him dare I say this very much resembles the metallic busts we were so passionately discussing earlier ladies and gentlemen I think it's the same damn thing this is the same bust what the heck it seems both Lorenzo Cabot and the Dunwich company were being influenced by the same force not only do they share direct Lovecraftian ties but the two were both being lured by that force to dig up something in the case of Lorenzo he found that crown in the buried city and the Dunwich company well they never finished so if we're not quite as sure what exactly they were after finally we have to ask the question what does the bust mean considering it's now clear Bethesda wasn't just reusing assets they obviously meant to demonstrate some link between the Dunwich monster and one of the most popular pieces of pre-war art I think it's very likely given how we see it presented on Lorenzo's fallout shelter online card that this structure was present in the ancient city mr. Cabot was exploring buried away beneath the rub al-khali perhaps the same ancient alien civilization that built that city had more cities spread across the world back their time we're similar busts could be found and perhaps the Dunwich company was trying to unearth one of those cities in modern-day Boston and that's why they stumbled across another head Peck in the room where we get the blade chrimbus tooth in the too many nooks all sorts of old marble structures can be found including seating and the very podium where the items are placed on this place resembles a buried temple of sorts all right well that's everything we get to see and fall out for but what about the other games let's go ahead and jump back to full out three the game where Bethesda first started to reference this entity and explore what it tells us in Fallout 3 there was a building we could visit called the Dunwich building and you guessed it this location was also associated with Dunwich borers LLC however rather than being a mine the Dunwich building was merely an office building belonging to the company by 2277 the structure was populated almost exclusively by feral ghouls and in the game the building was very much designed to be a sort of haunted house from a gameplay perspective making use of dim lights and jump scares Fallout 3's Dunwich building was honestly way more terrifying than the place we visit and fallout 4 and in it too we could experience brief flashbacks and occasionally even see objects just fly across the place on their own now the cool thing is that as we progress through the dungeon we could one by one pick up holotapes left behind by an unlucky man named Jamie who had apparently ventured into the building not long before us looking for his father and a mysterious book his father supposedly thought was here why the hell would he come all the way out here that's been a little nuts for some time now but not like this even mean that crappy old hospital without waking me without a goddamn flashlight I made enough selling the meds we've grounds to have kept us both fed at the colony for weeks now I'm almost out of rations my shoes are pretty much destroyed and I'm still chasing the old coot on my last reckoning he was headed south the vanilla game doesn't tell us much more about that book but through the holotapes we can tell jamie is going more and more crazy the deeper he explores into the building in one of his final entries it's obvious he's completely lost his mind he starts chanting two owls are red and calling out to some being he calls a hog equal Thoth take a listen sharp knife sharp knife to send him to deep Temple play and say my words Abdul comes again on the feast of the weaker feast for the deep temple born again here allows all right yes yes so this dungeon has clearly caused Jamie to lose his marbles and as we get to the end of the structure we can discover a large subterranean room of beneath the building where a small obelisk surrounded by numerous feral ghouls including Jamie lies all the characters seem to be chanting to the obelisk and sadly they're all hostile so there's no time for chatter but man is this weird the obelisk resembles a large pillar emerging from the ground with a human-like body attached to it and numerous roots everywhere now fallout 3 left us to wonder whether or not the Dunwich company specifically decided to place its offices on top of this obelisk or if they did it by accident and got haunted accidentally however knowing would fall out four reveals about the company I think we can safely say they probably built here on purpose whatever the case this is all vanilla fallout 3 tells us about the entity thankfully fallout 3's 4th dlc point lookout which took players to the swampy point lookout region of Virginia would reveal even more about the Dunwich conundrum you see in this DLC we could take up a side quest called the dark heart of black hole where after stumbling into an old manor an elderly man named Obadiah black hole would request the player find him an old book called the crib Beckner that he's been looking for Obadiah claims the book was lost family heirloom or something like that good good people should be able to sit and have a conversation especially in times like these civil discourse the greatest of our lost arts when you agree huh spoken like a true roughneck that's good you as a person of metal like yourself you see the family heirloom my mine has been stolen this heirloom the book has been stolen by those swamp folk cretins smash some heads bring it back get paid what do you say good the fools who stole it believe it has powers so the thing is probably well-guarded there's a ritual site east of the boardwalk in the basement of a ruined house I think you'll find it there bring it back to me and be paid apparently it's currently in the possession of a tribe of swamp folk in Point Lookout swamp folks are basically irradiated rural people inspired by The Hills Have Eyes and Obadiah informs us that a group of them currently have his book and are worshipping it thus we'll be set to go clear out that tribe and locate the heirloom however on our way a woman named Marcella who's a Christian missionary will stop us and inform the player that we can't let Obadiah get the crib vecna back she explains that it's really a dark text of incomprehensible power and if it's returned to Obadiah he will use it for evil wait a moment I need to know has Obadiah sent you in search of a book I thought as much listen to me very carefully child you mustn't bring it to him that book is known as the crib Aetna and it's a thing of evil purpose yes the crib Beckner the black hole family has a long evil history with the book it was lost to them long ago but it's found a way back to Point Lookout and Obadiah seeks to reclaim it Obadiah is no better than the heathens he's asked you to steal it from he believes he can use it to control them and God knows what else there's a way to destroy that damned thing I intend to do just that instead Marcella asks that if we find the book rather than take it back to Obadiah we instead head to the Dunwich borers building in the capital wasteland and touch the obelisk with the book which she claims will destroy the text once and for all this is a bit to take in but it's a pretty substantial revelation as Marcella confirms that the kreb Etna is linked to the Dunwich company and it's probably the same book that that Jamie guy and his father were looking for earlier regardless of whether or not you want to destroy it we still need to find the book simply head out to the swamp folk camp murder the weirdos to death and eventually you'll fight your way into a cellar where the creb Etna is supposedly being stored by the tribe now once you enter the cellar it will quickly become obvious that it's no ordinary of cellar instead this is a massive subterranean cave filled with human sacrifices and what seem to be ancient ruins as there are giant marble pillars walls and podiums all over the place in fact this cave looks suspiciously similar to what we find at the bottom of Dunwich borers in fall for after fighting your way through a few more swamp folk when down here we can finally locate the Quebec nough and pick it up from here you have the choice to either return it to Obadiah Black Hall for a reward of a few thousand caps or head all the way back to the Dunwich building in the capital wasteland and tap the book to the obelisk which will cause it to be destroyed so there you have it this is what fallout 3's Point Lookout DLC reveals about the Dunwich entity it has an obelisk in the capital wasteland may or may not be called a quilt off and has some connection to a book called the Chris Beckner but there's more that I should share with you you see the dark heart of black Hall quest we get to experience in Fallout 3 seems to have been completely rewritten by Bethesda and a dive into fallout 3's game files can show us what the original version was supposed to be all about cut dialogue files reveal that originally when we walked into the black hole manor and met Obadiah black hole he would have asked us to go find the crew Beckner and destroy it personally as he didn't like it either as we would progress with the mission and continue to help Obadiah out he would eventually admit to the lone wanderer that his family had a very very dark past and long ago one of his ancestors a man named Richard Dunwich yet that same Dunwich created a company and sought to excavate ancient cult-like artifacts so yeah there you go this cut content originally would have revealed the origins of Dunwich borers LLC Obadiah though in this cut version would have went on to say that that was a long time ago and his ancestors are dead he didn't support what his family was doing and of course wanted to destroy the crib vecna at least that's how the old quest was supposed to have gone sadly this cut version wasn't necessarily completed in the games files and it's very difficult to replicate but those are the spark notes of it nonetheless there you go the Dunwich company began when an ancestor of Oba a black hole decided to found it in search for cult-like artifacts and heck that might explain what they're doing in fallout 4 they were digging down hoping to discover new things related to the cult and that might be what that tooth knife was for that said though considering this plotline was cut from the game we probably shouldn't take it as absolute canon remember Bethesda decided to change this quest for a reason they purposely cut out the explanation behind Dunwich borers so we can't take it at 100% face value nonetheless it does provide some interesting context okay now if there was no such thing as fallout 76 or if we uploaded this video like two years ago then this would be where our video would end up I would have begun by talking about Fallout fours connections with the Dunwich monster explaining the Dunwich borers location and how it links to Lorenzo Cabot then we would have talked about what we discover in fallout 3 and called it a bit of a day however fallout 76 very much is a game that's out and available and it provides us with a lot more information that would be a crime for me not to cover you see fallout 76 features a location called lucky hole mine now this mine was not created or built by the Dunwich company in fact inside we can find no direct references I use that word loosely to the Dunwich company at all instead it was by a normal West Virginia firm or something like that upon entering a few of the terminals tell the story of what happened to this place just before the bombs fell WA apparently a few days before the Great War the mine was closed for some reason and the people locking it up began to notice that a group of weird individuals of were stalking it in the days prior to closing and there was specifically one woman whose security staff would consistently find wandering around the play who they'd have to shoo away it's obvious that the woman and the group of people were trying to get in and the security staff really didn't want that to happen however eventually when the mine did shut down they just kind of said screw it not our problem anymore and presumably this colt was allowed to break inside fast forward a few decades after the Great War and as we explore deeper and deeper in this location we can find all sorts of weird totems and human remains spread across the place many of these totems have root-like aesthetics that somewhat remind me of what we found on that obelisk in fallout 3 but even more significant is the fact that all around the mine we can find the same metallic busts we saw back in fallout 4 and it's not just one or two there's dozens of these things what the hell there are also numerous holotapes left behind by a clearly crazy person named Jeff Lane who claims to have come to this location searching for something he calls a the interloper a creature of which he claims was calling out to him from the complex once we go deep enough we'll start running into cultists who appear to still inhabit this place and they're still worshiping whatever is inside after fighting our way through them we can finally reach the bottom where a terrifying discovery will be made at the bottom of lucky hole mine sits a creature of the sorts you're seeing it on screen now with multiple tentacles or roots extending out of it and get this it moves every now and then do shoot at the beam and blood splatters out as well this is a living creature we've stumbled upon beneath lucky hole mine perhaps this is what the cultists were actor and what was luring that Jeff Lane fellow but what the heck is it if we look at this thing from the right angle it seems like we can make out a humanoid lower body structure see the two little legs and stomach however the top half has been replaced with these tentacle things in the games files this beam is referred to as gut puker 0-1 which leads me to suspect that maybe Bethesda thinks of this as an enlarged person who had his guts puked out maybe at first for a while I suspected this may be a growth off himself this might be the very Dunwich monster we've heard so much about but after thinking for a while I don't exactly believe this is the case it's just too small and doesn't seem as powerful as what we're expecting no I think this is some sort of creature perhaps associated with the bean we mentioned earlier what exactly it's doing though and how it was created well we'll talk about some theories in a bit unlucky for us there isn't a whole lot of additional information fallout 76 provides on what's going on here however the fact that we see all of these buried faces and a creature of some sorts and with the fact that we know other people were being called out does help to further solidify some connections we made earlier and confirms that Bethesda is very much interested in continuing to expand and unravel this mystery for us however where does that leave us what conclusions can we draw what's going on here well considering all of the connections we've made between all of these Fallout games over the last 30 minutes or so I think it's fairly safe to conclude that in the Fallout universe there was some sort of pre humanoid civilization that used to exist across the world what with all of the pillars we can find in all of the buried metallic busts and especially with what Lorenzo Cabbot tells us I think this is fairly indisputable however drawing conclusions beyond this is where things get a little bit difficult for instance there's the question of if these metallic busts were a staple of this pre humanoid civilization why do we find them all across modern architecture perhaps maybe before the Great War many of the world's elite and wealthy were followers of this pre-existent civilization maybe they knew about them and shared in their values and maybe they shared in their religion too which is why the busts are present on so many buildings today or there could be some sort of external force that's pressuring artists and architects to do such a thing furthermore maybe the Dunwich monster isn't just one specific being maybe it's a bunch of different pre humanoid beings across the world remember that obelisk we see in Fallout 3 and how it resembles a person meshing into roots well the interloper thing we find at the bottom of lucky hole mine fits a very similar description and that interloper was apparently calling out to people just like the obelisk perhaps fallout 76 is interloper earth is like a fossilized or hibernating member of that pre humanoid civilization that once existed and maybe the thing we find on full of threes obelisk is the same thing whatever the case it's also clear that there is an entity or as we just discussed entities that call upon various people to go dig down and dig up various artifacts ancient ruins or weird subterranean creatures in the case of Lorenzo Cabot he was called the dick of the city and find the crown in the case of the cut version of Richard Dunn which he was called to go dig up strange artifacts and this Jeff Lane guy was called to dig up the interloper now what the end game for this entity or these entities is also remains pretty ambiguous like what's the point here in the Lovecraft mythos which Bethesda has clearly drawn quite a bit from most of the cults who worship the various you know fishy gods specifically the cult of Yaga Thoth are working to cleanse the world specifically of life in the hopes that after humanity has been eradicated the great old ones in the various gods can establish a new order of sorts maybe that's what's going on here maybe the various cultists and people who have been manipulated by these gods have similar objectives up they wish to eradicate mankind that's why Lorenza was led to the crowd so we could use it to cause as much chaos as possible that's why the Dunwich company was led down to the two mini nukes in the Fang knife so they could use them to cause more chaos that's why Obadiah wanted the Kree Beckner back so he could use it for evil you get the point if this is really the case then that would have huge implications heck who's to say this ugh quilt off entity or entities didn't poison the minds of the people leading the great war and caused the nuclear fires to rage in the first place we know from fallout 3 that the United States didn't shoot first or at least they didn't think they were shooting first maybe the Chinese weren't as well maybe something else was going on who's to say this is quite frankly one of the biggest mysteries in the Fallout universe and I'm glad to see Bethesda continued to entertain it hopefully in the future we'll get more information and admittedly fallout 76 recently got the wastelanders expansion which who knows maybe adds even more to this and in future DLCs and games more pieces of the puzzle can be introduced and maybe one day we can finally complete it nonetheless looking at the timeline this video is somewhere between 35 and 40 minutes long so this is where we are going to wrap up I'm so sorry we weren't able to completely solve everything but hopefully your understanding of what's at play has been increased anyway thanks so much for watching everybody what do you think is going on what do you think uncle Thoth is and what do you think the end game of his worshipers are leave a comment down below as always like writings are very much appreciated again thanks for stopping by and to catch you all in my next video peace out everyone do you believe there is other intelligent life in the universe are you talking about aliens UFOs and little green men no no that's all popular hysteria I doubt any of it has any basis in fact I'm talking about the hidden history of our planet the very origins of human civilization ancient powers that modern science even at its pinnacle could barely begin to comprehend you think aliens created human civilization yes if by alien you mean a nonhuman precursor to the commonly understood founding cultures Sumer Egypt Assyria my father excavated a city in the rub al-khali in Arabia which he dated to more than 4000 years before the rise of any known human civilization the structures and artifacts were strange disturbing even clearly not constructed for or by humans I've spent my life trying to decipher what he uncovered
