hi i'm donna jordan from jordan fabrics today we're going to be making a quilt for autumn we're going to be making one called fall leaves fall this is a cozy quilt design pattern it's really fun to make and it's pretty simple i think we're going to have a lot of fun picking out boutiques and making all those leaves cascade down the quilt I have a fat quarter bundle I'm going to use here so I have eight fat quarters the pattern the way they've made it it's got light leaves cascading down to darker leaves so if you want to do that style you need to have a nice variety of different color leafy kind of prints so I've got eight picked out even though I'm only going to make a small quilt I'm just going to make the wall hanging size but we are going to use the extra ones to make a table runner so we'll do that at the very end now let me show you how to cut these this pattern has all the cutting sizes and it calls for fat quarters but it's really really a tight fit to get all the pieces on your fat quarter so you actually you actually have to cut up 21 inches now I can always get 21 inches up on a batik but I can't always get it on some other kinds of patterns because sometimes the selvage will be a little really really wide so you want to check that before you get started now whenever I have a pattern that is this close and this carefully cut I'm going to read all the instructions and then I'm going to pretend like I'm cutting it on a piece of paper here so I'm just going to draw my line so my first cut is going to be like this then I'm going to turn it and I'm going to do some cuts like this and just the act of drawing it it helps me remember what I'm going to do then with this scrap we're going to get some little squares out of here and another little piece here so you want to read through this and maybe check off the pieces as you cut but you do have to be pretty careful the first piece I'm going to cut is going to be for these stems so I need a 1-inch piece so I'm going to get it right off of the end here and I'm only cutting one fat quarter right now you can layer up more if you like I like to use the weight to hold that so it doesn't move so I'm going to just cut a one-inch piece here I got three of the stem pieces here and now I'm going to turn the fat quarter and we're going to do some other cuts we're going to do some three and a half this way here's the four pieces and we're going to sub cut these four into two more pieces from this last piece I just need a one by five and a half and then some three and a half inch squares so let's get that one inch piece off of here first and then we'll cut some squares and then that's all we need here's all the pieces I got from the fat quarter and that's enough for four blocks out of this particular print this down here you can see all these little pieces that's all that's left from the fat quarter it's not very much we're using up almost every smidgen of it now I'm going to cut the rest of the fat formers and then I'm going to cut the background now cutting the background is really easy because it's all three and a half inch squares so I'm not going to show you how to cut that just all three and a half inch squares then we'll be ready to sew before we actually start sewing we need to mark some of the background squares on the diagonal so we're going to use your preferred marking tool I've got a little friction pin here and I'm just going to draw a line on the back of this and that's all you need to do for the pattern now I'm also going to draw another line 1/2 inch away from that because I'm going to use the scrap half-square triangle when I make another project later so it's not very much extra work to add that extra line and stitch on it so we're going to mark the back of this and you need four of them marked for every leaf square you're making so I've already marked some here so I've got some built-up now you have to carefully watch the pattern to see which way you're going to sew these on but I'm going to take the pieces off for the one block where you need four pieces and the squares are real easy you just put them right sides together and stitch right along that diagonal line that you drew now you need to check your pattern to make sure you've got this oriented right but both of these pieces are going to get this sewn right here then we're going to take it to the ironing board and iron right along this seam line so I'm going to sew all four of these and I'm going to take it off and I'm going to stitch on that other line so just leave them on a string there and then stitch on the other line [Music] I'm going to take these over to the ironing board now if I'm going to make the whole quilt all at once I'm just going to keep piecing all of these but I'm just going to show you one block for now so we're going to take this over finish up this block I'm just trimming off our terminal thread now I like to take the piece and iron it flat first then we're going to fold this over right on that stitching line give it a little steam press so oops didn't trim it all the way so iron it flat first because that way if you're stitching pull the little teeny bit that will flatten it back out now we're going to fold it over and you'll see the edges meet very nicely there and just give it a little bit of steam now open it back up and trim right in the middle between your two stitching lines I just use scissors here because loops it really doesn't matter if it's completely straight because it's just the seam allowance you're stitching line of course has to be really straight so I like to do this right here and I'm going to set the half square triangles aside for a second and these are the four pieces we need for our leaf block now these half square triangles a little bit later I will iron them open and I am NOT going to trim off the dog ears for now because the border I'm going to use them on I'll be using my after I sew it together I'll be using my rotary cutter and trimming them off all at once so you can iron them open right now and we're going to build up quite a lot of these and that's like an extra bonus you get just from trimming that off so we will use that to make some sort of a peace border but of course we will be alternating the colors because we're going to get lots of pretty leaf colors all right now I'll show you how to finish the block here's the pieces for the block starting to look like a leaf and the last thing we need to make is the stem so we've got the stem right here and the poem gives you a couple methods for making this you can cut them narrower and applicate them or you can piece them so if you're going to piece them you're going to take one of those same one of the same background blocks and cut it right in half so I've got some cut already here so we need two of these and it's just that same same block here but cut in half now you can mark the middle of it and mark the middle of this if you like but I have found that you really can just set this on here and you can see you can just Center it up you can just eyeball that and stitch this on with a quarter inch seam [Music] so this is going to get ironed away like this I'm just going to finger press it for now and then we're just going to Center this one up also it's pretty easy because we've already got one on work and now we're going to stitch down this side now we're going to take this over to the ironing board iron it open and then we're going to trim it to exact three and a half inches so it'll be the same size as all of our other blocks we've already got it pressed open just give it a little steam it's a really neat method for making the stems I thought it would be more tedious but it's kind of fun now we're going to take it over to the cutting board with our rotary cutter we're just going to square it up and we're going to cut off that excess there and let me show you how to do this it really works best if you put an area of your cutting that it has half inch marks already marked so you can see it's slightly bigger than three and a half inches so I'm just going to make sure that I get this cut off too exactly three and a half inches and I'm going to turn it and do the same thing this way nice and neat and exactly three and a half inches now we can fill the block together now it's looking like a leaf block I'm just going to sew these two pieces together and make this row and then we'll sew the rows together I finger pressed that seam to the right and both of these seams to the right now I'm just going to stitch these last seams here and the leaf block will be done it's really fast because you don't have to match any seams in here within the block at all now I like to press this seam towards the middle that is not what the pattern says but I found it easier because there's a little bit of extra thickness here and I just found that it laid flatter when I pressed that one towards the middle after I saw this I'm going to press it towards the middle also there's a lot of extra seam allowances here and there's nothing over there this block is all done went together really really fast now I'm going to stitch up the rest of the blocks with all these pretty fall leafy colors and put them together in the quilt and then I'll get it coated and show you what it looks like here's the finished quilt it went together really fast I made 20 blocks with my that I used in the quilt here but I have 10 left over I used eight clad quarters so I have a nice variety of print so you can see the colors cascade from light down to dark and I liked the look of that that's what the pattern showed but you could sprinkle your colors throughout evenly if you like so with my extra blocks I'm going to show you in the next video how to make a really nice table runner and we're going to take all these extra pieces we had left over from the patchwork we're going to make a really fun piece to border with those these are batik fabrics mostly from Hoffmann we have one or two from Robert Kaufman and a really nice leafy batik on the back side so this is the wall hanging size it's about 44 by 55 the nice thing was making your fall items as you can use them much from right after Labor Day all the way through Thanksgiving so this was a lot of fun to make and so try out the fall leaves fall patterns it's got a lot of different sizes on it happy quilting [Music]
