welcome back to the show this Monday afternoon joining us now James Randi the amazing Randi who has spent his a good part of your career of just debunking people like uri geller and other self-proclaimed this how can I do I call you James or who are the amazing or or what the just calling in time for lunch no I I am NOT indeed bunker and I don't take that title lightly Tom because if I were to bunker I would start these investigations with the idea this is not so and I'm gonna prove it I can't afford that attitude so I'm an investigator rather than a debunking fine so you had you keep an open mind you're willing to absolutely see that the if it's well documented that some of these things there have been cases where if I had gone and said hey this is something phony watch this I would have been put right on my rear end on the floor pretty fast because a couple of the things that I've investigated it turned out to the most interesting legitimate yeah yeah anything dealing with the faith-healing tomorrow not with a faith in you not with anything psychic but some of the abilities some people have already astonishing a young man who could multiply five or six digits by another five or six digits in his head instantly faster than you can enter them into a pocket calculator I mean that kind of stuff really floors me but there are good reasons why it happens and we understand it it's not a mystery you call the the folks who go to faith healers and by faith healers we're talking about the Oral Roberts the Pat Robertson Roy masters will be out later Popoff and there's a priest in Massachusetts or the Ralph diario Yeah right you call them faithful moths flying into a deadly flame well I call their victims the moth actually I I regret to have to say that Tom but I'm afraid it's true so far as I've been able to determine in investigating literally hundreds of cases where people claim they have been healed or we're healers claim that they have healed their their subjects let's say I have not found one genuine case of healing no I do get lots of anecdotal stories oh there's a lady in so-and-so such-and-such did this happen the other thing and immediately she drew a new leg or she was cured of diabetes or whatever you hear these stories when you follow up on them they turn out not to be quite so and in 99% of them you can't get the medical evidence before and after if you can't even get the name of the people no one has any documentation now you allude to even Lords as a place where we've led to believe that a lot of healings go on go there with all kinds of illnesses and come away cured and renewed in the spirit not any documentation there well they certainly do come away renewed in the spirit there's no question of that but this kind of thing is only temporary it's something that gives people maybe a little more reason to live but then if you change your brand of peanut butter and believe that that's gonna do it for you that's just as good and it doesn't involve anything supernatural for people that what I find amazing I happen to be watching television Sunday morning for a bit and Oral Roberts Sun originally Richard was on and Richard was was healing people who was do is during the healing part of the show and he was talking to the viewer and he was saying there's somebody out there with with emphysema emphysema and then he said he'd stop and go yes Lord right Lord it was like the Lord was talking and interrupting him and he was then going and healing people out there that's right that looks so blatantly theatrical to me mm-hmm that I find it hard to believe that there are people actually being harmed by well if they think about it for a matter what you're really saying or what Richard Roberts is saying in this case is that suppose God is busy in the Mediterranean saving a boatload of drowning nuns or some such thing and right in the middle of it looks at his celestial watching he says whoops richard roberts is on the air sorry girls got to go and across the world he goes and he says richard were you speaking to me yes Lord this kind of thing now what people don't realize and this is really astonishing with Pat Robertson for example one lady claimed that a fracture of her ankle was healed and she gave testimony on the show via videotape at the time that Pat Robertson broadcast that videotape he knew something the lady didn't know that at the time he pointed out that TV camera and said be healed that woman out there is healed she no longer has that problem that was two weeks before she broke her ankle that's the amazing thing and Robertson knew it and didn't trouble to tell his viewers that and that's what happens with other words instead of curing her if he had that sort of precognition he could have got on the phone and said look you're gonna break your ankle if you don't watch out yeah you might want to avoid X Y & Z well the point is that she believed it was in real-time when she saw the videotape being broadcast she thought it with real time he's really pointing out of the TV set at that second while it had happened two weeks before let's go to let's take a look at a cure going on or what we are led to believe is a cure going on this is a more extended the tape of what you saw briefly in the show open this is with peter Popoff I believe right okay let's take a look are you postman named Don Henry from San Francisco who has been healed now by 11 different faith healers in 9 of 9 different diseases in 7 different cities and under two genders because as Bernice Malakoff this man was healed of ovarian cancer twice by two different prominent healers and he now has the healthiest ovaries of any postman certainly in San Francisco I can assure you so he was he was working with you he was working with me we had to do that for a good reason Tom it's not just a son two fairies with with his areas Bernice malikov yes fetching lady indeed I don't know he doesn't make a very good woman however Don did this and several of our other people did it we've got them out doing the same thing with WP grant this very day as a matter of fact the reason they do it is because the healers say that God sends them to the afflicted identifies their name to the healer as peter Popoff did and we exposed the gimmick he was using and all of them as a matter of fact almost all of them with the exception of Pat Robertson who done this word of knowledge thing where they actually call people by name the information is gained from them in advance now if God is giving them this information God must be wrong because that man's name was not Virgil jorgeson as he said it was there nor was it Bernice Monica but for all the the only danger I see in doing that for all the people who saw that on television and you believed that that man was really cured only a small percentage maybe are hearing that he was really a plant it was all a put-on IRA true it's proof that God didn't really direct peter Popoff so all the other people are finding that is more credence to believe in this guy it's unfortunate that he used that piece on his television broadcast because we did it here yeah but he'd be a fool not to I mean it was over it was a good case in fact he's used Don hen take a couple of different times and the last time as a woman as they as 10v grows out of the wheelchair mrs. Popham via her secret transmitter into Papa's ear that's how she was getting the word of not of knowledge actually was not God speaking to him it was his wife she said wait a minute that's the guy from Anaheim which is the tape that you just saw there so he finally he gave it away by his gift that was and apparently we don't have that taper of the quality is such that we could Eric but I have seen the tape before pop off going through the crowd and hearing his wife's direction my question is if these people for whatever reason if it if it makes them feel as if they are in fact better if they find some sort of spiritual awakening in these experiences what's the harm the harm is very positive Tom the harm is this that they go with some minor problem to the faith unit migraine headaches arthritis whatever they get some sort of temporary symptomatic relief or a placebo effect and that's what it is in many many cases in fact in most cases they get that kind of relief then they go back later when they didn't have to see a doctor this time and suddenly it's a terminal case or it's something very life-threatening they go back again and they say gee and they follow what the faith is said in WV gratis said this God doesn't want to cut on your body with a knife he does want to put chemicals in your blood or in your stomach he wants to heal you with the spiritual sword they say that's preferable I don't want someone cutting on my body with a knife so to speak and they go back to the faith healer and even the diabetic throw away their insulin and they die now they claim they heal diabetes and these people believe them and they end up dead you have gone to the homes of people who have been healed to interview them and found that they were no longer alive a terrible experience in one case we actually went to the front door after a weeks appointment with this lady who said she was healed of cancer and as they opened the door the mortician came out and they were wheeling her body out on a gurney covered with a with a sheet and I tell you that kind of experience it really gets to you especially with kids boy are we got a presidential we've got a presidential candidate running around saying he can heal you we've got the people like Oral Roberts saying Shawne 900-foot Jesus and if you don't pay am 8 million by March he's a gonner aren't these people I mean that this is fraud of the high order based on what your research why aren't they in jail good question and I am appealing as I do in this program and I do in this book I appeal strongly to people who feel as strong as I do about it to write to their congressman write to their legislators and ask them to do something about it because unless someone in a high position in government decides that this is something should be dealt with they will not do anything about it they sit on their hands because they say oh that's religion that's not popular with the book and now to an electronic immigrant who ought to be illegal but apparently isn't you can find him doing his stuff at 3:00 a.m. on channel 9 God has used Reverend Pierre purple throughout his entire life and ministry to bring more regulars he'd be engaging in trade or commerce and out of the trade practices at a personal corporation must not in trade or commerce engage in conduct that is liable to mislead the public about the nature of any services peter Popoff has formed back in the early 80s he was a celebrated faith healer who miraculously knew the names and addresses of individuals scattered through his congregation 1627 and without asking he knew their ailments to burning this brightest right out of your body take a few steps just to make the devil mad hallelujah but thanks to the detective work of an American skeptic called James Randi the hoax was exposed on camera Jodi Jodi Dean Jodi didn't know be right there on your right seven laughter four two six seven Masterson I can see the angels of God all around your house the female voice was that of Peter Popoff's wife Elizabeth prompting him via a wireless earpiece from information she'd garnered before the service shortly after that was aired on national for $27 as for the miracle water I'm supposed to drink it wait five days and I'll be blessed with riches of course I'm supposed to send Popoff another check and once the demand started they didn't stop as peter Popoff knows the world is full of desperate and gullible people the Western Australian Department of Commerce runs a website called scam net it pulls no punches about peter Popoff there is nothing more evil than using people's faith to line your own pockets in the UK the Advertising Standards Authority banned Popoff's infomercials two years ago but in Australia so far the regulator's have done nothing perhaps because it's not clear which regulator should act if Popoff is paying nine it's an advertisement and should comply with the Australian advertisers code of ethics which says advertising or marketing communications shall not be misleading or deceptive or be likely to mislead or deceive Popoff isn't paying 9 but just giving this guff to the network for free it becomes a program in fact 9 has the gall to refer to it as peter Popoff religious program religious program I prefer what scam that calls it a psychic scam we know of one Australian network that's refused to put peter Popoff to air but 9 apparently has no such qualms he is one of the most popular personalities in the evangelical world tonight is your night for a miracle and one of the most controversial and whether he's on his daily TV show someone has been healed of cancer stomach cancer receive the fire of the Holy Ghost 94 whether he's preaching at the live Crusades that attract millions around the world one thing is sure Benny Hinn is never dull Coomer fell to the platform I mean it fell to the platform we saw was selling us and it broke in pieces as it hit the stage but I believe certain demons have come into America through this new group so people coming in from Haiti and from all these countries bringing their devils with them Schulman salesman businessman Benny Hinn has built himself into a kind of one-man multinational religious conglomerate it's estimated his ministry brings in more than 200 million dollars a year mostly based on his pledge that you will be healed if you have enough faith and especially if you attend his Crusades four years ago we took our hidden cameras inside Benny Hinn's organization tonight we'll tell you what's happened to him since but our story isn't only about the man who promises miracles but also about a remarkable little girl who was looking for one he calls the miracle Crusades and as always Benny Hinn's appearance four years ago in Calgary was a finely tuned event reside sir cannot stand in the presence of a Holy Ghost cancer is only a name but is our name they can took that Jesus it all builds towards the miracle healing that Hin maintains is channeled from God through him the healing everyone here is waiting for right now ah what you see on TV are the lucky ones allowed up on stage but we found out how those people who actually meet Fannie Han are chosen we interviewed a man who saw those miracle Crusades firsthand as one of pastor Benny security detail he agreed to talk with us if we disguised his identity we called him Andrew how do they pick the ones they want to go onstage at that point they have staff members that go through and give them a quick quick interview and they Lassen can you know what's waited and grace asked me if I could help her to join him walk and that was kind of her faith in action and so I picked her up and we tried walking back and forth and um that was kind of a hard moment we caught up with Janis and grace as they fled from the arena their hopes of a miracle even a prayer from pastor Benny now gone that was almost four years ago grace per lot is now 11 she didn't get her miracle from pastor Benny that night and she still can't walk but you'll see she's not about to let that stop her when I paint say this I'm in my own world I just like doing artistically and I like doing scenery that's it's done my favorite thing to do coz that our our house has spots windows so we can see outside so I always get ideas she's a budding artist but that's not all it's no wonder friends and family call her amazing grace in addition to not being able to walk on her own grace still has stiff joints and weak muscles she's got little mobility in her hands but with a bit of help she can play the piano and not just any tune this is Tchaikovsky she said mommy I'd like to take piano lessons and I said oh I don't know hon I was a little bit worried that she might be disappointed her hands are such that they're not like our hands her fingers don't work like our fingers and her arms are with her arm joints are rigid and so I just wasn't sure how it was gonna work it works beautifully today grace is at the furni Fellowship Baptist Church where she lives in Fernie British Columbia she's playing Swan Lake at the Sunday service and I was sitting listening to her and she played it so beautifully and she put her whole like I say her whole body and her whole heart into it and it just epitomized who she was you know a little Swan who was gray and seemingly ugly and not very popular with the flock and little ugly duckling developed into a beautiful white swan and was loved and accepted by everyone after that every time she plays a piano I stand in awe amazed at what she can do with so little mobility shine upon us set us free but my truth you now bring us through her piano playing her voice and music she's just developed her characters developed and she just this person I'm so proud of her and I believe that it was a gift from God um to make up for what she is lacking in her body well what's happening slid down down her leg onto the floor I said God I prayed for like a hundred crippled people not one who said that's because I want you to grab that lady's crippled legs and bang them up and down on the platform like a baseball bat I walked up and I grabbed her legs and I started going here babe I started banging him up and down on the bus she got healed and I'm thinking God why it's not the power of God moving yes so because you haven't kept that woman in the face and there is this older lady worshiping right in front of the platform and the Holy Spirit spoke to me the gift of faith came on me he said kick her in the face with your biker boot I inched closer and I went like this and just as my boot made contact with her nose she fell under the power of God and the Holy Spirit spoke to me the gift of faith came on me he said kick her what do I do God and God told me to just run him down so I jumped up in the air and I went back and I hit him to the ground jumped on to him and got into a full mount ground-and-pound I jumped on it was flying on the floor I was standing up on the buck lung and I said God I won't revival and he said these words to me rag drop the pastor we still want to make it clear that we are in no way questioning faith or religious beliefs of any kind in fact many of the people who helped in this investigation are devout members of religious organizations but they believe it's important to know the facts so we took this close look at three ministries to see if the things being said and implied on the air were true we began with a man best known as a healer WV grant it's up to you the word said across the country accountable for Chicago Loop and his followers traveled miles to see him and give a lot of money because they believed in his miracles brother Levon why don't you stand down they see grant raising people out of their wheelchairs throws away their canes you can even make a stunted leg grow in a matter of seconds RIT says it's God who tells him the names to call out of the audience and what illnesses have to be healed Paulie godhood as long as you live your embassy a speech therapist the game no disability we wanted to know more about grants miracles and his money so we decided to begin by taking hidden cameras into film a week of his services we discovered that before every service granted his associates circulated formally among the friends and family of the sick making notes or even casually interviewing the people who will later be healed we saw grant gather information on more than 35 people he later seemed to identify by revelation from God but if pre-interviews explained the revelations what explains the healing we observed that grant uses a series of artful deceptions and tricks for example who saw grant walk up to this man during the service and hold up his cane who healed him and told him to run down the aisle the crowd thunders applause but let's look at that again grant isn't grabbing the cane of the man he's grabbing the cane of the woman in the next seat outside the man told us his problem was with his arm he had never had any trouble walking and when we questioned the people grant had lifted out of wheelchairs everyone we talked to said they could walk all along could you walk at all before you can so this little boy who is in fact confined to a wheelchair for life left the service without any miracles offered for him and there's something else we want to show you this what happened when grant called up this woman her name is Diane dougherty grant hadn't talked to her but before the service he had talked to this woman her friend Kelly Sutherland he didn't know that both of these women worked for prime time she been sick she's with the discs last year and has been in pain ever since but she lives something and she was whipping a suitcase but when grant called Dianne up it seemed the information had just come into his head this is this is not in light of the rest of them in fact Diane doesn't have back pain she said this because we'd noticed in every service grant amazed the crowd when he detected that someone with back pain had one leg shorter than the other sure enough he decided Diane had the problem of people people with cancer leukemia elderly on fixed incomes line up to give money sources say the ministry takes in six to ten million dollars a year much of which grant takes out for himself and here is the million dollar mansion where the grants now live just one of several properties his ministry owns and even as grant was sending out this fundraising letter one Christmas begging followers for money saying he had to borrow $99 according to documents obtained by prime time he was buying his second to Rory he took another case I'll send you a Jesus ever takes your case I don't care what of the country's foremost faith healers cleaning he has the power to cure everything from the common cold to cancer so why is he so upset with our Matt mehar we'll watch this inside edition investigation where we put the faith healer to the test Peter Satanist from the begun hey get out of here why is this man so upset with me his name is Reverend Leroy Jenkins I live to have with me for decades the televangelists has brought his Crusades to millions of people around the world today is going to be his day but he doesn't look like your typical man of the cloth he dresses and sounds like a lung singer and even tells off-color jokes but this self ordained minister says he's been blessed with the power to instantly diagnose and cure life-threatening diseases he says by just looking at someone he knows all about them and you you've a computer huh every day how did I know his life is so colorful it was the subject of a Hollywood movie featuring Faye Dunaway and Robert Wagner but Jenkins has had more than his share of personal problems in 1979 he served five years in jail for conspiracy to commit arson and assault he was later pardoned in 1994 he was arrested for grand theft but the charges were dropped when he agreed to pay restitution and seven years ago he married one of his followers a 77 year old widow who just happened to be a twenty million dollar lottery winner Jenkins took her to Las Vegas for the ceremony but a judge later granted an annulment at the request of her legal guardian despite his past problems his faithful followers have stuck by him I know that he's a man of Valor and the God uses him tremendously I need the man of God a true man of God Jenkins says his gifts are real and he doesn't use tricks like other faith healers and they wouldn't even know how to heal a tooth bang so when Jenkins invited us to attest his abilities and a recent two night crusade in New York City we took him up on the offer to prove he wasn't getting any advanced information about the people he tries to heal Jenkins asked us to meet him at his hotel people don't have to look at for three hours your mother will look good and then he asked that we drive with him to the crusade when I was 5 years old I knew there was something different in my life hundreds of people had gathered at this rook 'ln college auditorium many hoping for a miracle after simply twisting this woman's neck she says her pain is gone and this young mother brought her daughter hoping Jenkins could cure her crooked feet in their feet Polish right and it's a good thing this woman game Jenkins says he healed a growth in her abdomen that she didn't even know she had I touched you in the name of Jesus but I Chloe amen we spoke to her a short time later me like you said fronting it I couldn't see within me the crowd is so impressed that when Jenkins asked for donations some get as much as a thousand dollars Jenkins was so confident of his abilities he challenged us what these people just can't afford it they're doing this because they're desperate and I don't I shouldn't take this money well what you're saying to me is I should I should reject their money because I'm fake I'm not saying that I'm asking if I was fake I would absolutely give them back the money but but I believe that God called you to preach the gospel which is very important Senator Chuck Grassley office tells us that hen has cooperated fully with his investigation into whether hen and other televangelists are using the tax-free donations they collect appropriately although the senator has not yet released the results of his investigation the senator himself stated that we gave them more information even than they thought we would he did you're right but let me ask you if you're so confident that this information proves that you're behaving appropriately why don't you release it to me or the public well I will say that we have an agreement with the senator to keep things confidential I have nothing to hide by the way you have nothing to hide no of course not he promises to give us any information not bound by the confidentiality agreement so then I should be able to get whatever information I'm looking for I hope you do but after the interview this Senators office told us there is no confidentiality agreement you will bring the life of heaven with you even so his ministry said it didn't have time to edit out personal information from its donors in time for our broadcast and there
