Exploring Hokkaido Japan’s Snowy Sapporo at Night

so it's cold out and it's officially christmas everyone mary wait a minute no it's not so today we are in hokkaido exploring this exact wall right here and trying to figure out what what is it what's it do what is its purpose what is its name i think his name is bob how about you welcome to sapporo hokkaido everybody today by very very popular request we have come all the way out to hokkaido and we are starting here in sapporo in odi park and those dudes are really loud and rambunctious and they're super happy to be in the snow and so are we because that's the whole purpose of coming out to hokkaido now if there was ever going to be any gear failure in a tokyo lens live stream something tells me that today today is going to be the day i want to start by saying thank you so much to silver kicking off the super testing i can't stay long for the stream but please get a sapporo classic on me 100 will do that so today we're gonna start by exploring the odori park area here today and i said today like twice because it's just that much fun that's how much fun we're gonna have today that i have to say it multiple times and we are going to start by going through odori park and then exploring some of the back streets of hokkaido and who knows we might even have the opportunity to slip and fall because i have nearly slipped and fogged like i don't know fell phil is the word we're looking for ladies and gentlemen like eight or nine times today at least it is slippery out indeed so i guess we should start by saying happy new year everybody welcome to 2022 a year that is going to there are just so many liability issues also the snow out here is not really packing snow so if you caught any of my instagram stories or if you are part of the patreon crew and got to see my behind the scenes solo camping out in the forest in the snow video then you'll know that i did some solo camping in the snow and actually to be honest that was packing snow that was the best condition snow you could ask for i'd be lying if i said i didn't build a fort because i built a fort and it was an amazing fort but this snow here is just very there's there's no packing ability to it whatsoever it the way this is just the next installment in that if you will we last month we hit up kyoto in osaka we went out to skoka and pepu we went up to sendai we streamed from chris's studio we had an eventful december and i wanted to make it up to sapporo in december but unfortunately there weirdly wasn't enough snow on any of the days that i was available so we kind of put it off until this well we'll just call this december this is december 2.0 with a new swing to it and pie pie pie piper aha it took me a second to read that one saying get a cup of soup for the road loving the snow we haven't gotten much of it and i miss it i i kind of missed it i'm i'm now that i've camped in it i'm good like i did days camping out in the snow so i'm good for now uh but this is 100 just for you there are very few people out on the street here in sapporo because they're all underground that's right they're all under us see down there down there that's where they are they're all hiding they're like mold people no not mall people those are different people those people like shopping these ones are mole people hanging out in the tunnels of sapporo that is right this city one of my favorite things about it is the fact that it is connected by a series of underground tunnels that connect different stations in the basements and buildings and everything like that so you can navigate the main area of the city while staying warm and not having to go out in the freezing cold love it mole people so oh come on really all of them are gonna turn red all of them all at the same time how is that going to work huh are both the cars going to turn green is that what how is this going to work okay so this one's green but that's red i'm not i'm not buying it i'm not seeing how that adds up but we are where we are so we'll make the best of it oh boy i'm telling you honestly i uh look at the size of it okay so in case you're new to the hokkaido genre of life and you didn't already know this black ice it just looks like the road and it is dangerous for feet it's dangerous for cars and and ebbing crescent in here saying hey norm have you ever been extreme camping i hear it's intense okay i'm not gonna lie i was like what's extreme camping that sounds like it and it was it was intense absolutely and that honestly thank you for brightening our day with that joke incredibly cheesy but it's the kind of joke that i just love so much and you know i'm gonna i'm gonna put my second hood up because it is just so cold all right be careful on the black ice that stuff is scary it really really is terrifying second hood oh my god yeah i'm in the hood it is something else and actually this isn't bad when i arrived in sapporo today it was just a white out you couldn't see anything at all it was just pure white just like the train from the airport into here was just nuts i was going to take a bullet train originally today into the sapporo area from tokyo so i would have more time to work on the train however i figured with the way that the snow has been in japan lately it's been kind of nuts and i didn't want the bullet train to end up getting delayed and us being behind and not be able to do our stream and there was just too much risk involved and so i opted for a flight out here which is considered like if i gone all the way out to narita and taking one of the discount airlines i probably could have got it for like about a hundred dollars less but from haunted uh the flight's a little more expensive but it means that we didn't have to miss our adventure so i did leave an extra day here just in case just in case something went wrong i did leave an extra day so there is a chance everybody that we might get to do a secondary stream who knows one of our morning this honestly this counts as not much snow in sapporo the winter festival the the sapporo snow festival does look like it's going to be held this year which is super exciting but i wanted to choose my timing for this visit in a way that we'd be able to kind of avoid crowds a little bit more and get the city streets to ourselves as we often like to do in these streams so sachi thank you so much and really get to see so a lot of my content creator friends say that especially the end of the year basically from christmas clear through to the second week or so of january just do not look at the comments section on your channel just just don't even look don't even open the app and one of the reasons is that is a very tough time of the year for a lot of people and a lot of people will just hang out on youtube vent their stresses and their negativity and racism and everything in between into the comment section and it can be a really really rough time and it's one of the reasons why last year i actually made a dedicated video at the beginning of the year just asking everybody to just do something kind for someone and i think at the end of the video i asked everyone just if you haven't done so lately give your mom a call tell her that you love her and i think really it's one of the reasons why i wanted to produce so much content in december i think we did a video almost every single week throughout the month of december as well as what seven eight nine i don't even know how many streams we did a lot of streams and i just kind of wanted to give everybody a little bit of time to to escape and enjoy and feel that like the winter months are cold and difficult enough as is without having everything else that's going on in the world right now so i hope that you guys have been able to enjoy the content we've put out over the last month or so it's been an absolute blast to make and there's so much more exciting stuff to come as always so and beck's in here saying happy new year the same place at the same time i did drifting and all of that long before i ever did content creation my i guess i wouldn't really call it a career my stint as a drift driver ended well over a decade ago probably closer to 11 maybe even 12 years ago and look at this you can see this it is very unpleasant with all the the wind and the snow and the anyway and funniest experience ever well there is there is a video up in the early days of tokyo lens on the tokyo lens channel where i talk about nearly dying i don't know if that that counts as a funny ooh is this hi guys is this the new that doesn't work at all does it is that the new tokyo lens office are in sapporo in the show 10 guy with all my gear on display so anyone just break in i think it might be what do we got here i always hope for like little like alleyways and whatnot and what's up dude why you crying and borealum in here with this crap again saying will the stream quality be up to 1080p in the future we've done a whole bunch of 1080p streams go back and catch them we did half of the month of december in 1080p where were you mate the uh 1080p streams that the world just isn't ready for them the technology isn't ready for them we opted as a group to go for the 720p streams because the 1080p ones while they do have higher quality they freeze the quality doesn't drop they just completely freeze up and then the stream dies and we had streams die out on us repeatedly throughout the month of december and so we uh have opted for all mobile streams for the foreseeable future to be in 720 just because the uh the stability of it to be honest the what is your new year's resolution 1080p damn it it's so good so cheesy but so good so yeah the any of my non-mobile streams will be in 1080p that's not a problem but the youtube app does not allow us to use the wide-angle lens or does not allow us to use 1080p and i think one of the reasons is it's just too much data for it to handle in fact it kind of messed things up last month because near the end of the month i didn't have any data left at all and i was kind of screwed i had to like temporarily purchase an e-sim for my second phone and stream off of that because japan while they do have quote unquote unlimited data plan no they don't the honest truth is unlimited mobile data in japan is not legal and it's not like it's an illegal thing it's not like they're going to go to jail or something like that what it means is that the the government caps it at about 30 gigabytes right now so you can't actually get like if you were to get cool de lemon if you were to get an unlimited data plan for your phone and uh look at the fine print it actually says a they're going to limit your data throughout the day during busy periods and b you'll be capped at 30. so unfortunately right now for this month for like streams and whatnot i have my mobile data plan as well as not one but two two wi-fi modules from ivideo just in case i use up one or in case one just completely dies out on us so and yeah 30 gigabytes is extremely low especially when you're literally trying to bring japan to the world through streams and whatnot so yeah that's a ton of fun all right i just need to make sure i haven't like dropped my other glove or anything and if you guys haven't given that like button some love yet please do give that like button some love let's see if we can't play that game gamify it see if we cannot get the likes to match the viewers on this stream and sounds like we have a yaki emo guy over here so let's go see if we can check him out it'll the sole purpose of streaming and the setup and making the thumbnail and getting all the timing right and all of that and then you got to manage all the there's oh that guy almost went down but in the end i do it because it's something that i genuinely genuinely enjoy doing so i am so happy to be able to be wow i see why that guy was shaking so yeah that guy okay that's why you almost went down i almost went down little tiny baby steps stick with the baby steps all right this side of the street seems to be the less crowded side so we're going to go over here and so yeah bit of a wanderer for some more boss burger you know what honestly i may just do moss burger tonight i think when all is said and done i'm gonna have to grab some moss burger grab myself a nice warm bath i have this habit whenever i go on these these trips of trying to get the cheapest accommodation physically possible because i i'm i'm cheap elaine chicken for you thank you so much i actually i ate and drank a ton right before this stream and we've only been at it for like what 40 minutes but i am already starving if you haven't already give that like button some love let's gamify it let's see if we can't smash 500 likes in the next two minutes 500 likes in the next two minutes that is the goal go go go go go and so i lately because we've been staying at so many more places i haven't just been doing the usual camping thing that i do i've been aiming for actual hotels where i can stay and leave my stuff can you imagine tent camping in sapporo just set myself up in odori park not happening and so i've been trying to play this game with myself of each time trying to find a place that's maybe only like 500 yen more expensive than the place i stayed at the time before but much nicer and i think i might have peaked this time there we go there's some there's some peaks april right there so i have you guys selfieing out here i have found myself a fairly nice hotel this time for i think like only 4 000 yen a night look at that ah very very sapporo sorry it's been so long since i've seen this scene like the last time honestly that i had a chance to to see this particular scene here was probably 2005. and if you've been out to sapporo you'll you'll know the the space but just so happy to be here give me a second to just be distracted [Music] [Music] cool so i found a hotel that is a relatively new you know let's walk this way why not and be only about four maybe 4 500 yen and is spacious and beautiful it is built to look new it is got a nice onset up on the 18th floor is by far the nicest place that i have stayed within this budget range and i'm very very excited about this accomplishment so let me go back through and catch up on some of the super chats that i kind of rolled today but once upon a time in a galaxy far far away so that's a natural face and what is with all the weird statues seriously what what was the goal with this like somebody had to approve that honestly somebody was like you know what yes we will we will put this particular statue on the streets of sapporo i give that approval multiple people would have had to sign off on that i just just blows my mind the city probably paid forty thousand dollars i would not be surprised see now this guy knows what's going on high center of gravity zero chance of rolling your car was that sarcasm it just might have been oh boy all right i'm a little reluctant to go up into any of the actual like back streets in this area now that we know what the area is all about but anybody who why why what in the covered arcade because sapporo used to be one of the areas of japan that was absolutely amazing for that but japan has done everything in its power to try and kill its street musician culture and just get rid of as many of them as physically yeah see this can we can we just go like that all right and we'll put that there it will go like this that was not even close to being in the right position was it i got all the hoods i wasn't kidding when i said i was in multiple hoods i'm actually fine it just this is what helps keep the ears warm cause because this hat doesn't really do it of a sith vibe to it doesn't it how cold is it in sapporo well we talked about that at the beginning of the stream it is currently about minus six degrees it's weirdly gotten warmer since starting the different is the feeling in sapporo with regards to the cold sapporo is much much colder as you can see here you might get snow once to twice a year in tokyo but you'll almost never get anything like that and so sapporo is considerably look at that it's a steamy city it's considerably colder and gets much much snowier uh and going back to the super chat in response to asking about areas to live in sapporo i'm gonna come entirely clean with you and say that i oh give me a second there we go i do not know i don't know sapro well enough it has been some years since i i think the last time that i actually managed to come out to support was probably back in 2019 i think 2019 maybe january or so of 2019 there are some videos up on the moist the m word was moist there are uh at least one hokkaido video up on the tokyo lens main channel and the last time before that that i managed to come out here was back in like 2005 like a billion years ago so it has been some time i think we can make our way towards odori park and the shotengai and whatnot out there and see if we can't i honestly don't know where that particular covered arcade is but i i will do my best to find it i will not be able to find it who knows we might find it i doubt it but we'll try i'm gonna head down this way also if you haven't already let's hit 700 likes on this stream i give it two minutes new challenge points land speakers saying standing on the street like this and trying to grab customers is not legal and you can and will be prosecuted but like if we look at these shops over here that paints a pretty good picture of what the what the nightlife is like out in sapporo so right now we are making our way towards oh wow we smashed 700 likes you guys killed that you guys absolutely can we get to 800 in and my name is george and today i'm introducing this city which is japan's second newest city behind beppu which was founded in 1998. this one soon after in 1999 it really wasn't none of this is true by the way but sapporo if you didn't already know he's actually one of japan look at all of this damn it saporo is one of japan's newer cities which is why everything is organized in a grid structure like this here minami iii that's south three all like look at this look at the look at the street signs here south one west two the whole city's organized but there's no street names it's just grid there's there's your position on the grid and so it was developed rather than most japanese cities which are very very cow path this city here was actually i i don't i don't want to say well planned out but it was it was planned out and this is a depressing sight i'm not gonna lie this is sad uh focus in there saying have a beverage on me norm you've earned it cheers from barcelona thank you so much for that and yeah much more of a grid like new york city and oh back in the day you know what it wouldn't be a tokyo land stream if we didn't jaywalk at least once so here we go we're jay walking you ever walk if you ever watch back on i have a whole series of my videos from my very first trip ever to japan up on tokyo lens and it's like me 15 years ago looking all weird and goofy and dumb like look japan with like a sony handycam and it is the most cringe embarrassing stuff ever but i wanted to get it out there because i had something like 18 hours of footage and i was like you know what we need to do something with this and we're the very first videos one of the very first places that i ever went was here in sapporo and so this shotengai for example used to have street musicians just playing like i i guess in the streets is what you would say and it was lovely but again as we talked about a little bit earlier japan has been kind of trying to kill that street musician culture it's somewhat unfortunate but japan is a very bureaucratic nation and they want everything to be you know prim and proper and processed and everything like that and tony in here keeping the super chat tonight and so let's get back out into the snow which definitely looks amazing in crisp 720p god it's gotta look so bad honestly i can't wait for technology just to catch up with the world so that we can actually do streams in better quality more consistently on youtube oh anyway now that that depressing little rant is over we're heading down towards old lady park which is down this way and i 100 look at this make delivery they're gonna deliver you some empty boxes because this place is shut the down what in the it's not 24 hour back that is definitely not a i wonder if he has winter tires see so okay so you'll notice in stark contrast to the area of the town that we were in before as soon as we get into this area of sapporo it quiets out and if you were here for the beginning of the stream you'll know that the reason that it down there they're thins us they're hiding underground in the land of the mole people here in sapporo but also it's really impressive how many of the streets and walkways and everything here are heated just so that you don't have to worry about slipping on the snow especially as you get closer to the station oh and that was just me almost dropping the gimbal and guys we are just a few likes away from the likes matching the number of viewers so if you haven't already smash that like button let's see if we can't cross 900 likes within the next two minutes spectacular and i love it and i genuinely genuinely miss that part of the culture i really really do look at all this snow underground is great should we check out some i feel like we should check out some of the underground at least just a little bit right do all this talking about the underground we don't even take a look at it there should be an entrance to it down this way somewhere so let's locked off it's locked off so you're not allowed to it's a terrace it's a whole terrace just to visit that tree but you're not allowed to visit the tree probably because they haven't why is it called pole town can we just talk about that for a second the fact that it's called pole town it just sounds so wrong north pole no and like this random assortment of benches like let's just sit back to back with each other we're just gonna hang out right here in this random assortment of benches sapporo is an amazingly well-planned city i feel like they planned out the city very well they put it in a beautiful grid format they got it rolling and then they were like okay so what do we do with it now should should we make a place called pole town and and put some really weird 40 000 statues that look like somebody put a cigarette out on a turtle okay let's let's do that and we'll make a random terrace with a single tree that nobody can access because that's that that that's what people want right also we have an incredible nightlife uh so why don't we completely terrorize it by getting rid of all of the street musicians that provide value and bring people into the shotengai and then we'll close off pole town our underground question mark from as early as what 10 pm or so what it honestly who's behind these economic decisions here they're just like oh yeah you know full place full of shops and restaurants and everything like that it's freezing cold let's close that up nice and early don't want people having access to all of that nope most of the shops probably closed at 7 p.m anyway you can tell you can tell that as much as i love this country i do have some frustration with some of the off economic just i'm no economist by the way but seriously leave pole town open after 10 p.m and allow the street musicians to make some money in the streets come on allow them to do it like you got a nice fancy 50 70 000 bus stop here that's completely open on one side in a snowy and windy town and then you've got this shotengai which could be doing really well if people were allowed to use it or shops were open past 7pm this is seriously this pole town is at this point just haunting us it's stalking us now oh i wish we could go down to to pole town but we can't they don't want us we're not invited to pole town paultown has rejected us it's time discrimination more than anything time discrimination is a thing and i know otto has already left but otto there's a moss burger over there what happens in pole town i'll tell you what happens in pole town stays in pole town it's gonna end up becoming like a t-shirt at some point i can see it i can see the pole town 10 a.m to 8 p.m that [ __ ] thing closes at 8 00 p.m are you kidding me who honestly who was the city planner who made that decision who's just like now we don't want people spit like honestly no we don't want people spending money after 8 p.m that is ludicrous let's force them out into the cold and ensure that no money is spent underground after 8 pm by the way this is the access to a lot of the train entrances as well i'm sure that they have separate entrances and little locked off areas but come on okay that is my rant on that we are 10 likes away from hitting a thousand so if 10 of you could just make my day by giving that like button some love i would appreciate you i really would i've got to find some ramen because everyone's been saying ramen is the food for today so in my previous town shops close at 4 pm i've always started to be incredibly ludicrous at areas like akihabara for example a lot of shops don't open until 11 o'clock in the morning and then close at like 6 or 7 p.m bunkers one of the most incredibly popular well-trafficked electronic and anime districts in the entire world and shops are open from 11 to 7. it's just weird even the uh there's not a ton of overnight traffic and whatnot as well for a lot of stuff uh just because trains don't run 24 hours and we have smashed the 1000 like mark and paul anthony in there with a little super chat sticker thank you so much for that i feel there was a ramen shop right around the corner here that i was really keen on going to and dm cousin uh maybe there are street performers but they stop at eight and then uh store them underground for the night that guys this particular entrance to pole town isn't locked i'm sure it's just a station entrance i'm sure of it but we gotta go check out boldtown all right i'm so happy that we get okay to check out you're just near ramen alley there's an alley for ramen if there's an alley for ron that feels like something we gotta do so there are secret entrances to pole town ha so these are the the station entrances right here and then there we go happy happy pole town happy happy happy happy and there it is that is the sapporo underground right there look at all that ramen alley is the spot i'm gonna have to honestly i'm gonna have to go check out ramen alley the shopping area is closed the underground walkway seems like it's still open to a certain degree but a lot of the entrances and exits to it are closed which just creates a ton of confusion my bag totally got stuck on that door all right and mocha in here saying the ramen alley should close should be close by uh three toma mina me five okay i'm gonna try and find that nothing like a pole town i imagine to be all right guys let's see if we can't find this i ramen alley okay all right i'm gonna slip past these cars here and hope that none of them squish us get a good look at their license plates just in case we almost we almost went down again seems to be a theme for the day gotta be in osaka to enjoy stuff open late actually osaka is also kind of crap for it to be honest fukuoka has always kind of been my go-to for late night stuff mind you i've also just always had a slight prejudice against osaka because it doesn't have the back streets i want it's okay it's all right ramen haruka is pretty good if it's open i feel like we're getting close to this [Music] diamond alley all i can smell in this area is food and perfume it's quite the mix to be honest so hopefully we'll wander our way into the right alley and end up getting some good food okay you guys did not lead me astray there it is right there happiness is an audi covered in snow there you go there's your you look at all the hard work look at this everybody working their butts off late at night to close their shutters and ensure that nobody gets a meal after 10 p.m and this this is peak ludicrous crap right here because honestly when people go drinking in japan the one thing they want more than anything after drinking is namin so you are in a drinking area one of the peak drinking areas in the country and there's a ramen area right here that's [ __ ] closed that is spectacular work japan it's incredible that you've made it this far like honestly if you were to go to like fukuoka or something like that there are places open two three four o'clock in the morning just ramen stands because they know that people want ramen and even in tokyo there are little like ramen carts that get set up throughout the city at like one o'clock in the morning midnight stuff like that because people finish up their drinks and want to go grab ramen what is this place it's a god hot dog and rocks i don't know what god hot dog and rocks is but that is it norm are you hangry no i'm just honestly when you have something that you love this if you have a family member that you love incredibly and you know they're capable of great things and they're just not applying themselves you'll be disappointed and frustrated and i feel like japan has in some ways become that family member because honestly it is not that late right now and yes there is enough place open that i'll be able to go and get myself a good bowl of ramen but at the same time like there's a lot more that could be being done here and it's not even 50 50. like the majority of all shops here are closed so with that being said i'm gonna step off to the side let's see if we can't find ourselves another hot vending machine another vending machine with hot drinks you've been hanging out with chris too much no i uh i am plenty capable of having things to criticize all on my own ooh i see vending machines down there and this is very loud and it has nothing at all to do with the current state of things japan has just kind of always been this way uh there's a great deal of inconsistency uh across the the cities and their approaches and things and whatnot and oh no i just realized i don't have any other coins oh that sucks that sucks that guy just headbutted the other dude in the face so if you didn't catch that go closed or i will open the shutter i will shove the money at them and i was like give me the ramen man it's really crowded in there why is it so crowded get a beer and let off some of that frustration is really popular here in hokkaido honestly this one lined up outside seems like it's gonna have to be the place this also looks really good what is what have we got going on here look at that again very flashy but i feel like that's going to be the place we end up eating today so i'm going to step out here wait for the crowds to clear just a little i'm gonna say our next stream will most likely
