in today's episode we're exploring the Central Islip State Hospital on Long Island New York this Hospital started as the farm Colony for the Manhattan State Hospital in 1899 Farm colonies allowed the patients to get away from the city and it was believed that working in the Farms or the many workshops helped heal mental illness over the years the population began to increase and the campus was greatly expanded it was split away from Manhattan and became an independent Hospital the patient population peaked at about 10 000 in 1955. deinstitutionalization quickly decreased patient populations in the 70s and 80s as drug therapy was implemented the hospital officially closed in 1996. parts of the campus were demolished in the early 2000s to make way for housing and Commercial developments and the New York Institute of Technology began using the remaining buildings in 2017 NYIT officially left the campus unoccupied join us as we explore these structures [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] and filming abandoned places there's only one thing I look forward to and that's a good night's sleep and thanks to Helix sleep for ensuring a well-rested night and sponsoring this portion of today's video I've had my Helix mattress for about a year now and it's been great I've been less Restless throughout the night I've had a lot fewer sore mornings when I wake up in fact most mornings I'm so comfortable I just don't want to get out of bed and the mattress is just as comfortable as day one Helix sleep makes premium mattresses and bedding that are customized to fit your needs and delivered right to your door with free shipping in the USA everybody's different and Helix knows that on their website as a sleep quiz to match your unique body type and sleeping preference the mattress that best fits you they have something for everyone and if you sleep with a partner you can even take the Sleep quiz together to find something that fits both of you the mattress is shipped in a box right to your door it comes rolled up with impressively compact shipping because of how compact it was shipped I was able to get it into the bedroom and set up on my own and it really surprised me how well it was packed and how quickly it expanded in only a few minutes it was ready for a solid nap based on my results Helix match me with the midnight I'm a side sleeper and prefer a medium feel with something that's soft but still supportive they also offer an optional glaciotex cooling cover which I opted for it helps maintain the temperature of the mattress throughout the night I like it colder when I sleep and the cooling cover pulls heat away from your body over the past year I've had better and more comfortable sleep than I ever had before this is the mattress I wish I could have when traveling and while it's not possible to bring it with me the first night back home always comes with a super restful and comfortable night's sleep with the Helix mattress and to make sure you love it Helix offers a 100 night sleep trial with a 10 year warranty Helix sleeps Memorial Day sale is now live and it's a great time to upgrade your mattress you can get 25 off your purchase for a limited time plus two free pillows at Helix sleep.com slash proper people or click the link in the description now this is creepy as hell go upstairs a lot of papers in here yeah this is the school building look at this just filled with better frames beds look there's film reels so I'm scared I've seen film reels look at these cassette tapes mathematics audio interactive cassette look at these lights and there's power running to all these yeah it's probably pretty dangerous although hopefully a circuit breaker would trip if there is just like loose wires I don't know foreign [Music] [Applause] these are like storyboarding so this might have been a film School foreign more storyboards a bunch of broadcast cassettes there's cassettes in here from 1988 that it was titled the city and it says 30 minutes I wonder if this is like you know just random b-roll of New York City yeah probably from 1988 yeah like that would be pretty cool to see like I wonder you have to get one of these broadcast videos cassette readers yeah because that's not VHS that's something else entirely yeah 1988. January 14th 19th the city in 30 minutes that sounds cool like you can watch that somehow these were entranceways this one is packed with file drawers something you have any idea what this is something with pressure and temperature I mean this is a PSI and these are temps so I mean you can plug it in and find out what it does I don't know if it's a good idea you want to plug that shit in yeah this might be the end of me good all right Netflix and switches on foreign this is the new percolator right here all right oh you see that yeah a lot of flickers this is pretty cool actually just turn that off it's almost at 100 it could be pressurizing turn it off no the PSI gauge isn't it could be broken but it's at 100 degrees Fahrenheit the temperature goes up to 400. just turn it off okay let's unplug it oh it smells like some a heating element let's not burn it down smells like a heat element wow that's a lot of chairs damn you guys have no fear you were just like right up in front of that thing who knows what the fuck it's gonna do there's terminals in here should we plug these in someone plug this in this wasn't plugged in last time to work I don't know I don't see the power oh that's the power oh it's kind of lighting up oh there it is let me change the focus so what was this thing an off oscilloscope we have nothing to feed into it though we do have a signal it get checks um it's an electric waves visual display of a waveform that you feed into it that's really cool that's cool that this screen actually lit up shutting it off um how about plugging one of these in all right I'll try I think it does they're heavier CRTs yeah I did hear it make some noise so yeah you're right [Music] a little bit I love this stuff oh cursor you have no way for this is a bit older than the other computer we found in an abandoned place and this one still works foreign car security lady thank you what'd you find everywhere is it welded shot yeah what it went to yeah some kind of a shoot foreign [Applause] oh man that's crazy this room still works too turn the Crickets on this place would be so creepy at night and there's some older lights up above these just a ball not a hole fixture that sounded close foreign foreign thank you [Applause] just like a cat ladder you know the cat's going out here it's funny they literally tunnel time oh yeah these are big tunnels it's pretty clean too no pipes in them either so you don't have to worry about asbestos probably won't even need the masks okay dining room do not touch the phone wires look at this chair just chilling over here foreign all right foreign [Music] very modern look these are like these were Hospital door handles yeah the motion sensor here really yeah there's the panel for it though it says out of system I don't think we have to worry about it question question of the system get this flashing light down there look down this hallway it's very empty in this building but still very creepy wow there's a lot of chairs in here yeah this does not look like it was abandoned for very long all right turn the AC on it yeah it's kind of somewhat chill too oh it's nice yeah it's not just blowing in here no this building's nowhere near as cool this is like abandoned two years ago or something take a peek I guess behind the drywall it's the old Asylum Brick so it just built that's why this building's not decayed it's a building in a building almost they like built a shell inside of it like a covering well there's stairs what is going on here they sealed them off I don't think these tiles were asbestos you know they're bigger they were probably replaced at some point I don't think all those have been used yet but they're always still have the zip ties on them chocolate and sugar labs for me we must still be in one of the school buildings oh yeah the railings on the staircase that's pretty old and creaky that goes down from our school [Music] this is so they can bring Wheelchairs and beds up and down this is cool [Music] [Applause] let's check out the floor all right same similarly empty as the first floor there is still equipment in these racks look at this these drive enclosures are still drives in them what is it it's tape storage yeah long term storage it's 400 gigabytes tape storage oh yeah I mean I mean that kind of sounds like a lot it's not new but it's not super old it's probably like 2008 brand new wiring it's like all these these all of these have drives in them they say there's 73 gigabyte drives wow in some array 72.8 gigabytes each this is the tape system this is the way you guys were here last time this is crossing over into Asylum I don't realize that wasn't solid [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] foreign killed in history and Kroger New York packages May 27th 1884. these were yeah we can go upstairs these are Asylum Wards so [Music] unfortunately we were running out of daylight to film the rest of the campus and regretfully never return to continue our video documentation in early 2022 development officially began on an Adaptive reuse project of all of the remaining Hospital buildings by the end of 2023 more than 350 new apartments will be ready for occupancy [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] thank you [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music]
