[Music] Shalom and welcome to via after Israel a Hebrew phrase which means you shall love Israel we hope you'll stay with us for the next 30 minutes as our teacher dr. Baruch shares his expose Ettore teaching from the Bible dr. Baruch is the senior lecturer at the Sarah Avraham Institute based in Israel although all courses are taught in Hebrew at the Institute dr. Baruch is pleased to share this weekly address in English to find out more about our work in Israel please visit us on the web at love Israel you are G that's one word love Israel dot o RG now here's Baruch with today's lesson name now many times people will say what's in a name now that may be true for your name and my name but when we open up this book and we look at names of individuals especially when we deal with the names of Messiah or the name of God that one particular name of God there is great significance and we need to understand that name take out your Bible and look with me to the book of Exodus and chapter 6 the book of Exodus and chapter 6 now we began this chapter last week with just one verse verse 1 and tonight in our study we're going to continue on from verse 2 through verse 13 and one of the emphasis of this passage at least initially is on this name of God I'm going to talk a few minutes about that name because when we look at this this first verse of what we're going to be studying this evening verse 2 notice how it begins we read here Exodus 6 verse 2 and God spoke to Moses and he said unto him a knee Yehovah I am the Lord now this word it consists of four Hebrew letters you'd hey Bob hey these four letters this name of God what I like to call the sacred name of God which usually translated into English usually written with capital letters the Lord now this this word as all Hebrew words are they are derived from a verb and from that that root verb we get the basic understanding of the noun for example the word for speaking later bear to speak well from that we get the word devar word and it's obvious that we see the relationship between speaking what do we say words so the connection between the word D bear he spoke in the word devar the word that he spoke same thing for walking the word lalettan to walk or to go well the same word can be in a form where it speaks about the way we walk a lifestyle ha ha ha so words in Hebrew have a consistency so if we want to understand more about this name Jehovah now let's pause for a moment because many people they pronounce this four letters you Dave Ave with the phrase Yahweh let me say very dogmatically that those who use the term Yahweh I realized that people saying that there's songs with that but it is in accurate and we know it for a fact if you come from a Jewish background for example you might know the song that is sung in the synagogue adone alam which means the master of the universe the lord of the world Adon Olam and in that one of the vs. and this sum is whoo hyah whoo-hoo-hoo ETA what does that mean well the word the three words here of significance in that that sentence is hyah ho vey vey AEA he was he is and he will be now the Hebrew infinitive for this this word that we're speaking of is Lee he owed it means to be so to be is the root and we can have this concept of being he was he is and he will be when we take this name Jehovah God Jehovah and we look at it we see three distinctive characteristics from the Hebrew root verb and that is the you that begins it which is a sign of the future and then the valve in the middle of it which is a sign of the present tense and then the root hyah these two hazed you'd hey Vava hey twice we had the letter hey which is derived from hyah he was so when we look at this you Dave Ave we see distinctive characteristics that speak about the past present and future hyah Hove a and ETA so anyone who knows a little bit of Hebrew they know it is impossible to pronounce it yah way it's yeah ha ha very important that we know that it's the God that transcends all things that is over that he's not limited not limited to something of this world and this is gonna show a change look again at our passage Exodus 6 let's begin again with verse 2 and God spoke to Moses this is Elohim that the name God he spoke to Moses and he said unto him I am Jehovah I am the Lord I'm Jehovah verse 3 now it gets interesting because in verse 3 the first word there is a Hebrew word the era the era well by the way the reason why I read the first verse of chapter 6 last week I mentioned it to you that that first verse concludes last week's a Torah portion now this is important because a Torah portion this is the passage from the law from the Torah that's read on a given Shabbat the next verse verse 2 what we are beginning with today begins a new Torah portion and it's called each Torah portion has a name from oftentimes a significant the first really significant word in the text and here it's found in verse 3 the era what is that it comes from the word to see but it's in the passive so it's not to see but to be seen it's in the first-person singer and it means I have been seen or I was manifested so verse 3 says I manifested to Abraham I was seen by Abraham Isaac and Jacob hello hey Avraham Allah hey and Scott fellow hey Yaakov the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob we're talking about the patriarchs and whenever this is important write this down whenever the patriarchs are mentioned in the text you know what should come into our mind the promises of God and we can be assured that the promises of God that God can deliver them why because as God speaks here about what he's going to do his great promise and what's the name of this book well you will say it's the book of Exodus which is the book of names in Hebrew but one of the ways I've said this several times in our study the book of Exodus one of the ways that it's also known as with the word Redemption the book of redemption and redemption make a note of this Redemption gives us a new perspective not just a new perspective on life a new perspective of who we are but a new perspective of the Living God we know him differently we can know him intimately and how is that only through and one emphasize this only through redemption so he says here I appeared to Abraham to Yitzhak and to Yaakov how may L should die in this name El Shaddai now before we go any further we need to talk about this this name of God El Shaddai it comes from three Hebrew words the first el el shaddai el what is El El is the generic name of God just the basic one el meaning God the next letter is the particle shape it means that so we're speaking about the God that and the last word die die is word for enough or sufficient so the patriarchs what he's saying is this the patriarchs knew God only and this unique name el shaddai the god that is sufficient that God that is enough now what does that mean they knew God based upon their circumstances if they had a problem God was sufficient he was enough they had a need God could meet that need he could take care of that problem he could solve that issue he manifested himself in a issue in a matter but now things are changing because the people are not going to know God simply as the mighty God El Shaddai the God who is sufficient but we're gonna know him in a transcendent way that is a God that transcends all things that has no limitations we're gonna stop knowing God only by circumstances I'm hungry he gives me food I'm tired he gives me rest I'm thirsty he gives me drink no we're gonna know him beyond that is we're gonna learn more of the essence the identity who he is now here's the message one can only know God in this way in a personal way in an intimate way through redemption so one who has not experienced Redemption by blood they can know that God exists they can know God in circumstances but they cannot know God who transcends all things they can't know God in this way it's only through Redemption and that's why Moses is receiving this revelation about this guy because this is a God who redeems so he says here I am this you Dave Ave I'm the God who was the God who is but also and the emphasis is on the God who will be why well the future what should come into our mind when we speak about the future the issue is they Kingdom there is a relationship between Redemption and the kingdom well let's press on look again at verse 3 I manifested to Avraham to Yitzhak and to Jacob and El Shaddai but my name you'd hey Bob hey Yehovah I did not make known today and there was a reason why he did not and that is even though they saw God he manifest himself to them in mighty ways he spoke to them through Redemption we you and me we can know God better than even the patriarchs they did not know this transcendent God in this this manner verse 4 now how does he manifest himself well he's going to do so notice what he says and also my covenant he says and also I establish my covenant with them and he says to give to them the land of Canaan the land of their soul journey meaning the land that they they passed through and it says which they dwelt in it or they were a stranger in it now this also has insight for individuals because biblically this concept of being a stranger it is one that that kind of lacks community this idea here is one that that really doesn't fit in he's a stranger he's so journey he's not one of but what's God good to do he is going to bring them into intimacy through this experience of the Lamb now I cannot overemphasize in this significant passage where God is revealing himself in a unique way through the concept we'll come to it in a moment of redemption and what is God lifting up first and foremost a covenant and through this covenant it's connected to the land knowing God as redemption Redeemer it is also attached to the land now the land represents a promised land represents a location and we see those two things are highly connected it is where I am it's when I'm where God wants me to be that is in the land and his will that I can have access to his promises so he says look again verse four and also I establish my covenant with them to give to them and God he is the the owner of all things so he can give to whom he wants what he wants to give to them the land of Canaan now it in one sense belonged to the king nights they were there but sovereign God said no I'm giving their land to you ultimately it's his land the land of your sojournings a land which you dwelt in or that you were strangers in it verse five and also I have heard now this speaks about God listening and I realized in this passage we'll come to in a moment there's an emphasis on Redemption God's going to define Redemption speak about the benefits of Redemption and what we're learning here is that it's through Redemption that God what it says and God heard the groanings now this is a word for suffering but it's the expression of suffering I have heard the sufferings of the children of Israel so significant the suffering of the children of Israel this means that God is intimately acquainted with his people's situations nothing that happens to a covenant member is going to escape God's awareness he knows this and he is going to deal but he'll deal with it only by means of redemption without redemption this suffering is going to continue on he has a solution and it's a redemptive solution so look again at verse five and also I have heard the groanings of the children of Israel which Egypt and it's here the Egyptian is a context the Egyptians have enslaved them put them into bondage God's aware of this he knows the pain and the suffering that Egypt has called them caused them and notice what he says vah as score at britty and I will remember my covenant now remember I share it with you several weeks ago that there is a connection between God remembering and the covenant it is because he has a covenant --all relationship with an individual that God remembers that is that he takes awareness and that awareness is just not I know it but because he knows it he responds based upon the terms of a covenant so one of the most important things that a person can have is a covenant 'el relationship with God and today that is only available through one covenant and that is a new covenant a covenant of forgiveness a covenant where God will write his truth the laws of God upon our hearts that will become a new creation and all of our sins God promises he says I will forgive them and I will remember them no more so he says look again at the end of verse five and I will remember my covenant therefore he's still speaking to Moses he's giving Moses instructions words of revelation that Moses is supposed to take to the children of Israel so he says therefore Moses you are to say this say to the sons of Israel I am the Lord this God who was is and will be meaning just don't think about the past and not just am I going to be with you today but it's ongoing he says I am Jehovah God and I will bring you forth from your sufferings the sufferings of Egypt now there's four very important words most of you know that every Passover there's something called this Seder it's a special Passover meal and in that according to tradition there are four cups that we drink of the fruit of the vine and these four cups are based upon what we're reading now these four words haute settee hits LT got Alti Lacock t he says here I am the Lord and I will bring you from the suffering from underneath the sufferings of Egypt so he's gonna bring out he is going to it says here hote Sethi bring forth then he says it's salty I am going to rescue I'm going to deliver you from their labor and then third it's the word Redemption they got LT at him I am going to redeem you but notice what he says to redeem you with an outstretched arm and in great judgments now it's important because there is prophetically a connection between this term arm and Messiah this word zero and the redemptive work of Messiah Yeshua and he says I'm going to with this out stretch this this manifest arm the word arm Zorua comes from the same word for seed as in the seed of Abraham and who is the seed of Abraham the answer is it is Messiah Yeshua I've mentioned to you that this word Zorua well it's the same word at this Seder meal this Passover observance usually we have a Cara that is a a satyr play and in it is various elements we had the more for the bitter herbs we have a place for matzah and other things and where we put the shank bone now the shank bone is to remember the Passover sacrifice korban Pesach that is Messiah and what we look here is that it's called Zara Zara the same word zero and the tuya that is an out stretch but it has to do with being manifested God is going to manifest his his Zahra what's that his seed his son so this word for Zahra arm it's also related to the concept of a male offspring a son so he says I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and this Fatima good to lean great judgments now this just lays a primary principle and that is the connection between God's judgments and redemption when ultimately the outcome the full outcome of redemption is experienced at the end of the age and I'm speaking about entrance into the kingdom that Messiah is going to establish when he returns it is going to come about the establishment of God Kingdom with great judgment he is going to judge the enemy he is going to destroy them just as we see a foretaste of God bringing judgment upon the Egyptians so he says I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments verse 7 they Locati at kam Li Lian I will take you to me for a people now this is important because this word Locati I will take Vale aqaq T the cactus I have taken with the valve in front of it it changes it to a future so I will take you by the way you may not know it but this word the cut to take is a marriage word so it speaks about through redemption we enter into a covenant as a marriage covenant with God that we become the the bride of Messiah so this concept for redemption has to do with entering into a covenant marriage where he is the groom and we become the bride he says I will take you to me for a people and I will be to you for God now this is important because this expression I will be your God and you will be my people or you will be my people and I will be your God whatever the order and it goes back and forth the rabbi's teach and they're absolutely right on this they teach that this sentence and I will be to you for God and you shall be to me for people this is a definition a definition of redemption very important that you realize that over and over in this passage there are hints there are clues given to us that emphasizes this Redemption that God's going to bring upon his people he says as an outcome of this he says and you shall know that I and the Lord your God the one who brings you from under the suffering of Egypt or the Egyptians so God is going to take them out what he's saying is this right now you are under the authority of Pharaoh and because you've submitted to him you have suffering but I'm going to take you from under that I'm going to bring you out and you are going to enter into a covenant with me by means of redemption so he says I am going to to bring you forth underneath the sufferings of Egypt verse eight and I will bring you to the land now do you see something and speaking about Redemption there's always an emphasis in the land now what does that teach us well similarly when we speak about messiahs Redemption this this perfect redemption by the way he did that work on Passover the fourteenth day of the month of Nisan now the emphasis is also on a place and what is that place the kingdom of God so there's a paradigm here the Hebrews they were in bondage in Egypt that is they were in bondage to sin in Egypt serving submitting to someone else but God brought them out in that same way we all of the world is in bondage to sin in this world and through the work of Messiah he brings us out into a new location ultimately that location is the kingdom of God so in the same way the kingdom should be important so should the land and the land has relevance for the last days I mentioned this frequently God is bringing the people back to the land I am sharing this with you from the land of Israel having been born in America but God moved in my life in the life of my family to bring us to the Land of Israel and this is a prophetic sign that he's returning his people back to the land of Israel so he says look at verse 8 and I will bring you to the land which I lifted up my hand that is a shavoo Shavua and oath it is a strong word for promise so God says I've lifted up I've taken an oath I have lifted up my hand to give it that is the lane how do we know that because the term arts is feminine and the pronoun here is feminine and it goes along with what he's talking about earlier on in this verse what he says I will bring you to the lamb the only other possibility for this pronoun is land there is no other so he says and I will give it the land to you as a heritage now it's the word Moorish ah it's related to the word inheritance but but it's a different more assha has to do with a heritage it has to do with a new identity a new understanding of yourself and that new understanding is going to change who you are and how you behave faith is not just a concept that we have in our mind but it manifests itself through a lifestyle change through a behavior through a duty a doing of right things good deeds verse 8 once more and I will bring you to the land which I lifted up my hand to give it to Abraham Isaac and Jacob remember the patriarchs promise he's promising this and I will give it to you as an inheritance how can he do that Annie I don't I or Jehovah now what is that name Jehovah God the God who transcends all things the God who is without limitations so he's saying who can carry out this promise I can because with me all things are possible I am not dependent upon anything I have no limitations no boundaries so God is making this promise and he can deliver it he is able verse 9 and Moses he spoke 10 it's literally what it says vitae bear mache Ken and Moses spoke yes Moses agreed now some of Bibles will say the word thus he said this same thing thusly - who - the children of Israel but here's the problem he says but they will not listen to Moses because coats are Ruach you may avoid Akasha they're not going to respond they're not going to listen or obey Moses why because of a spiritual problem because of the shortage of their soul now this word is the same word in modern Hebrew if you have a fuse that goes out a circuit breaker and things just don't function that's the problem spiritually there was a short circuit in them they have to have a spiritual change and this spiritual short fuse we might say came about why because of a vodka shot the work that was placed upon them and here's the message if you are not doing what you're called to be doing it is going to affect you spiritually you're going to have a short-circuit and it's only through Redemption that spiritually you can be mended so that you can do the work of God and when you behave doing the things of God it is going to transform you obedience brings about a spiritual maturity you can be saved by doing nothing just by receiving that gospel it's not related to works but having been saved it is your faithful behavior that is going to have a sanctifying a life changing a spiritual transfer nation of who you are so it's very important the language that's being used here verse 10 and the Lord spoke to Moses saying go it's a word bow now usually it's come so come and speak to Pharaoh but in this case bow is go go speak to Pharaoh the king of Egypt that he viola at B'nai smell merit so now here it's that he has sent literally in the past it's in the future but the vouches it that he will send that's how we would understand it but the Hebrew is is telling Moses it's as good as done it's just a matter of time and what is this time for well you should already know the answer this because Moses was giving the staff of God and Moses was told you know it's not gonna be by your Proclamation that Pharaoh is going to agree no Pharaoh is going to have a strong or a heavy or a hard heart a dull heart and this heart is going to be hard and it's connected to all the signs he says take that staff of mine and do all the signs and wonders the new float the both team all of these things and we're going to see a strong connection between these wonders these signs and Pharaoh's heart condition we'll come to that in the upcoming weeks but look again he says you go to Pharaoh you speak to the king of Egypt that he sent the children of Israel from his land it is as good as done we in the rationale we have to put it in the future that he will send forth the children of Israel from his land verse 12 and Moses spoke before the Lord saying behold the children of issue they will not listen to me how will Pharaoh listen to me he's saying listen if my own people do not pay attention if my own people will not respond to me they have seen these signs and wonders and they are not obeying they're not committed how will ferrell be committed to to you well remember something within all of this passage what's the foremost thing that we're studying the revelation of this transcendent name of God you'd have ave means that God that all things are possible doesn't matter the circumstances the situation the resources nothing matters if God's there so Moses he says how will ferrel listen here obey me and he says Vani are el-sayf a time I am and the word here is uncircumcised lips now here's what he's saying this same idea is found in the Book of Isaiah there's a term unclean lips but it's lips that that are not functioning properly he's saying I have uncircumcised lips meaning I am still a man in the flesh I speak fleshly things that's all I could do is speak the things of the flesh but what does God say look if you would to verse 13 and the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron and he commanded that they should command the children of Israel and ferrule the king of Egypt and notice what's the solution for the flesh here's the answer the commandments of God now what am I saying I'm saying this and I'm speaking primarily to believers what I am sharing is only relevant for believers here we're getting an Old Testament principle to reveal a New Testament reality I want to say that again we are getting an Old Testament principle to reveal a New Testament reality now someone they have heard the gospel and they've said yes they have said yes I'm a sinner yes I'm living in the flesh I'm pursuing the things of this world I'm not even aware of the things of God but I want to change I want to be committed to God therefore by His grace I'm receiving the gospel through faith and that person the moment that he receives the gospel he is a new creation he has great potential because the Holy Spirit is dwelling within him but does that mean that he's gonna live this this life of a kingdom power of heavenly authority that he's going to begin to do the work of God it does not so many believers they're saved they will be for sure in the kingdom of God but we look at them sometimes we look at ourselves and we're living in the flesh what's going to bring about the change is when we become committed to the commandments of God we are not saved by the commandments but having been saved when we walk in accordance with the commandments of God it is going to mature us grow us spiritually so he says he spoke the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and you shall command them to the children of Israel and to Pharaoh the king of Egypt what is that command to bring forth the children of Israel from the land of Egypt he's saying you just command why because there's Authority in the word of God you speak the Word of God and what's gonna happen God's go to go to work is that wonderful you submit to the Word of God you do what you're instructed to do and gods go to go to work and he's going to bring about his promised results that's what he's saying here learn this principle obedience to God's Word will bring about God's activity in your life in your situation and when God goes to work well what I've said so many times the good work that he's began he is faithful to bring it to a conclusion a conclusion that is rooted in his promise God is faithful so you know what God is really telling Moses and Aaron here get to work you obey me you take serious the command and here the commandment is just speak the purpose of God and when you do so I'll take care of the rest God knows the beginning he knows the middle he knows the end we don't always have that that insight but what we do know is what God has commanded us and when we do his commands what he has instructed us it's going to give us a new perspective we are going to begin little by little more and more to be up that upward calling where we see things from God's perspective and the more that we pursue his purposes he's going to raise us up and we're going to see the faithfulness of God we're gonna have a spiritual confidence we're not gonna give priority to the enemy think of this David and Goliath David despite all of these threats all of these words they go live spoke to him David didn't take any of those to heart I mean when you read the story of Goliath it's almost humorous when you think of this this young probably a a young man 15 16 years of age going to battle with this large Philistine this giant of a man him being fully equipped with this large sword and this this shield and here little David David he is a a pretty boy he's handsome he's a gingy he has reddish hair he's not a large man but he's a mighty man why because he's a man in covenant 'el obedience a man who desires to serve God and manifest his glory and all these threats the Goliath gay to him David he didn't pay any attention why he saw what God was going to do he knew in advance the faithfulness of God and that's what God is telling Moses and Aaron just believe in my promises and how do we demonstrate how do we show belief in the promises of God here it is get to work start obeying start submitting to the instructions of God and when you do that it is indeed an invitation that invites God into your circumstances he's not limited to that we saw that today but he will come into your life and he will bring a godly a holy a righteous a kingdom change into your experience and the experience of others well I'll close with that until next week may God richly bless you Shalom from history well we hope you will benefit from
